Nawa-e-Waqt’s learned guest speaker, Prof. Hafiz Sayeed: Did someone inform America and Pakistan of their fugitive’s public speech in Lahore

This shows how Pakistani media has been espousing the cause of Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba while shedding crocodile tears on the demise of Pakistani state.

The widely circulated Urdu daily of Pakistan, Nawai Waqt on Thursday published an advertisement of a symposium to be held by the Nawa-e-Waqt, the English daily The News and Waqt News at Hameed Nizami Hall, Lahore today, the 21th March, 2013. The topic of the symposium was ‘Forthcoming elections in Pakistan: Challenges before Pakistan and solutions’. This could be just like any other symposium that is held from time to time in Pakistan or in India on relevant social and political issue. So what is special about it? Yes, the remarkable and notable aspect of the symposium was the ‘learned guest speaker’ who was supposed to speak on the subject. And wait, he was the only speaker who was deemed fit to speak on the topic in entire Pakistan. The head of the terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba and its wing Jamat-ud-Dawah, Prof. Hafiz Sayeed was the guest speaker to deliver his ‘scholarly’ lecture before a select audience comprising journalists, intellectuals, historians, scientists and of course, politicians who would be the greatest beneficiaries of his gems of wisdom on the election eve.

It could be recalled that in one of its previous issues, the New Age Islam had carried out an article by Mujahid Hussain with a copy of an advertisement of Taliban threatening Shias of elImination if they did not renounce their beliefs, pay jeziya or leave Pakistan. The newspaper that had carried the advertisement of Taliban was the English daily of Pakisan, The News. The News was also the host of Thursday’s symposium along with Nawa-e-Waqt and Waqt News.

Hafiz Sayeed, sorry, Prof. Hafiz Sayeed who, India claims, was involved in 2008 Mumbai attacks and on whom the US has put a bounty of $ 10 million was scheduled to be openly attending a symposium and delivering his incendiary speech presumably against.

The fact that the media group hosted this lecture session (picture below) for one of the most wanted terrorists is proof of the fact that the media in Pakistan has been espousing the cause of the terrorist outfits in Pakistan like The Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba while shedding crocodile tears on the demise of Pakistani state.

The symposium also laid bare the unholy nexus between a section of the dominant media in Pakistan, the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the ISI as during his interrogation about post Mumbai attacks, Dawood Gilani, alias David Coleman Hadley had admitted to have attended several meetings between senior officers of the ISI and senior militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba who had participated in Mumbai attacks.

Hafiz Saeed’s organisation, the LeT and Jamat-ud-Dawa had been banned following the Mumbai attacks and he was even put under house arrest. But subsequently, the Pakistani judiciary absolved him of the charges citing lack of evidences against him. Later he joined Difa-e-Pakistan (Defence of Pakistan) movement comprising politicians, scientists and other dignitaries of Pakistan.

The timing of the symposium was important. The elections are round the corner and terrorist organisations play a powerful role in elections in Pakistan as political parties need them to rig elections and force opponents to withdraw candidature. Since Taliban is already in the field, political parties may need the backing of Hafiz Saeed to counter the influence of Taliban.

The other reason may be related to Kashmir. During his interrogations, David Coleman Hadley had said that the Mumbai terror attack was orchestrated to stop an exit of committed fighters from Lashkar-e-Taiba to join the Afghan war as there was an ideological split in the LeT. The Mumbai attack gave them a sense of achievement. Hafiz Saeed has been keeping a low profile since US undersecretary of state Wendy Sherman said in April last year that both Hafiz Sayeed and his brother-in-law Abdur Rehman Makki carried a bounty on their head.

Therefore, the programme organised in his honour may be an attempt to bring him to centrestage and use his human resources and ‘expertise’ in the forthcoming elections as well as to revive the insurgency in Kashmir. In any case, this event organised by one of the biggest media groups of Pakistan has sent a wrong and dangerous message to the whole peace-loving world and its implications will be disastrous.

Intriguingly, no newspaper, Urdu or English except The Nation carried the news report of his lecture at Hameed Nizami Hall, not even Nawa-e-Waqt, which was one of the hosts of the lecture. However, Nawa-e-Waqt only published a photograph showing Hafiz Saeed and his sidekicks speaking with Editor-in-Chief, Nawa-e-Waqt, Majeed Nizami in his chamber.(Picture above)

According to the The Nation, Hafiz Sayeed spew venom as usual against India saying India was involved in subversive activities in Pakistan. He also said that India had set up special centres in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where terrorists were being trained for activities in Balochistan and elsewhere in Pakistan.

Recalling the 1971 war he said, “The fairest ever elections had been held in 1970 and everyone knew the consequences the country had to face thereafter.  India invaded the then East Pakistan and divided the once world’s largest Islamic state into two.”

Apparently, in a bid to score over their rival terrorist group, the Taliban, Hafiz Sayeed said that Pakistan had been achieved in the name of Islam and it should be mandatory for all candidates that they would make the Holy Quran their manifesto.

Those opposed to the Pakistan Ideology or having separatist views should not be allowed to contest the elections, he asserted.

As was presumed, the lecture was organized in order to underline his presence in the election process and also to make some anti-India statements to win the sympathy of the people.

It seems that though the lecture and the meeting was initially publicised but it was hushed up following pressure from the government and the intelligence agencies as Hafiz Saeed is wanted by India and the US.
