We Muslims know the Ground Zero mosque is meant to be a deliberate provocation. It's an act of "fitna".
By Raheel Raza and Tarek Fatah
Last week, a journalist who writes for the North Country Times, a small newspaper in Southern California, sent us an e-mail titled "Help." He couldn't understand why an Islamic Centre in an area where Adam Gadahn, Osama bin Laden's American spokesman came from, and that was home to three of the 9/11 terrorists, was looking to expand.
The man has a very valid point, which leads to the ongoing debate about building a Mosque at Ground Zero in New York. When we try to understand the reasoning behind building a mosque at the epicentre of the worst-ever attack on the U.S., we wonder why its proponents don't build a monument to those who died in the attack?
New York currently boasts at least 30 mosques so it's not as if there is pressing need to find space for worshippers. The fact is we Muslims know the idea behind the Ground Zero mosque is meant to be a deliberate provocation to thumb our noses at the "infidel." The proposal has been made in bad faith and in Islamic parlance, such an act is referred to as "Fitna," meaning "mischief-making" that is clearly forbidden in the Koran.
The Koran commands Muslims to, "Be considerate when you debate with the People of the Book" -- i.e., Jews and Christians. Building an exclusive place of worship for Muslims at the place where Muslims killed thousands of New Yorkers is not being considerate or sensitive; it is undoubtedly an act of "fitna"
So what gives Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf of the "Cordoba Initiative" and his cohorts the misplaced idea that they will increase tolerance for Muslims by brazenly displaying their own intolerance in this case?
Do they not understand that building a mosque at Ground Zero is equivalent to permitting a Serbian Orthodox church near the killing fields of Srebrenica where 8,000 Muslim men and boys were slaughtered?
There are many questions that we would like to ask. Questions about where the funding is coming from? If this mosque is being funded by Saudi sources, then it is an even bigger slap in the face of Americans, as nine of the jihadis in the Twin Tower calamity were Saudis.
If Rauf is serious about building bridges, then he could have dedicated space in this so-called community centre to a church and synagogue, but he did not. We passed on this message to him through a mutual Saudi friend, but received no answer. He could have proposed a memorial to the 9/11 dead with a denouncement of the doctrine of armed jihad, but he chose not to.
It's a repugnant thought that $100 million would be brought into the United States rather than be directed at dying and needy Muslims in Darfur or Pakistan.
Let's not forget that a mosque is an exclusive place of worship for Muslims and not an inviting community centre. Most Americans are wary of mosques due to the hard core rhetoric that is used in pulpits. And rightly so. As Muslims we are dismayed that our co-religionists have such little consideration for their fellow citizens and wish to rub salt in their wounds and pretend they are applying a balm to sooth the pain.
The Koran implores Muslims to speak the truth, even if it hurts the one who utters the truth. Today we speak the truth, knowing very well Muslims have forgotten this crucial injunction from Allah.
If this mosque does get built, it will forever be a lightning rod for those who have little room for Muslims or Islam in the U.S. We simply cannot understand why on Earth the traditional leadership of America's Muslims would not realize their folly and back out in an act of goodwill.
As for those teary-eyed, bleeding-heart liberals such as New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and much of the media, who are blind to the Islamist agenda in North America, we understand their goodwill.
Unfortunately for us, their stand is based on ignorance and guilt, and they will never in their lives have to face the tyranny of Islamism that targets, kills and maims Muslims worldwide, and is using liberalism itself to destroy liberal secular democratic societies from within.

Dear Zaidi Saheb,
I do not think of this website as "my website." It belongs to the readers and the authors, and more particularly those who take the time and make the effort to post comments. This understanding makes it easier for me to carry stuff that I may not only not agree with but totally disagree with, like this idea of "uncircumcised, Hindu Taliban" operating in Pakistan with the support of India and Israel. However, I know that Pakistani Press, particularly Urdu newspapers are saturated with conspiracy theories blaming Israel, America and India - in that order - for all the ills of Pakistan. I think probably a sort of coping mechanism is at work. Without these conspiracy theories, perhaps our Pakistani brothers and sisters may not be able to cope with the enormity of disaster that their beloved Pakistan is. Since we all want Pakistan and Pakistanis to survive, - who wants Taliban, circumcised or not, running helter skelter with nukes in their hands - one should allow them this indulgence, even though while helping them cope in the short run, this is actually destroying their chances of survival in the long run.
But one thing strikes me as very curious. If these Hindu-Jewish uncircumcised Taliban are teaching Wahhabism to unsuspecting Pakistanis and obviously these people are not friends of Pakistan, then Wahhabism must be a bad thing for Pakistan. How come the Urdu press in Pakistan that publishes these “stories” does not consider Wahhabism bad for Pakistan nevertheless? How come Wahhabism is such a fast growing industry in Pakistan, as it is becoming now even in India. If these conspiracy theories make this realisation dawn on Pakistani and even Indian and Bangladeshi Muslims, then they would have served a good purpose, might even actually save Pakistan in the long run, contrary to what I had speculated above.
One fact is, however, inescapable. The United States is indeed protecting the fount of Wahhabism, the Saudi regime and allowing it to spend tens of billions of dollars annually to spread the poison even after 9/11. Might there be something in the conspiracy theory then? Your guess is as good as mine. Even Wikileaks don’t give us any lead on this. Over to the readers of New Age Islam to study and enlighten us.
Some articles by Gordon Duff, a US Marine veteran of the Vietnam war, and now the founder and main editor of the Veterans Today website, devoted primarily to the welfare of America's war veterans, but also to broader issues affecting American lives.
Duff thinks of Hameed Gul as a friend. He says that Gul is a Pakistani patriot just as he, Duff, is an American patriot. As someone with a military background, Duff is proud that he has been able to make friends amongst Pakistani officers. He, along with Jeff Gates, a prominent American independent journalist and author, made a trip to the war area on the Pakistan border earlier this year. The first link below is his report based on that trip.
You might think the idea of uncircumcised "Pakistani Taliban" is a joke. It is not. Not to be confused with the people under the leadership of Mullah Omar, the "Pakistani Taliban" is not only funded by Israel and India, it has Indian participants. The Pakistani military complain that the Pakistani Taliban is extremely well armed and funded. Their communication equipment is so sophisticated that leave alone Pakistani, even NATO forces cannot break it. Having spent the last 22 summers in Kashmir, I know that uncircumcised "Muslims" turn up in the strangest places. There was a remote village in Kashmir where two Biharis, who were teaching the locals the Quran from a Wahhabi angle, were discovered, when a local happened to pass through their village in Bihar, to be Hindus. There were several such reports in Kashmir, from reliable people. The Israelis and Indians have their own sinister agenda in Afghanistan-Pakistan, aiming at the break-up of Pakistan. Indians are foolish enough to think this is in their interest. Israelis are delighted that Indians are such fools. We are next.
Not many people are in a position to talk about any of this, leave alone authoritatively. Gordon Duff is one of those. Duff is a military man and an American patriot. He is not a pacifist. But he is an honourable man and not afraid of bluntly speaking what he sees to be the truth.
I hope you will give some space to these links on your website.

Republican Congressman Ron Paul, the spiritual grandfather of the Tea Party movement, weighs in:
The fact that so much attention has been given the mosque debate, raises the question of just why and driven by whom? In my opinion it has come from the neo-conservatives who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled to constantly justify it.They never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars. This sentiment seems to confirm that Islam itself is to be made the issue, and radical religious Islamic views were the only reasons for 9/11. If it became known that 9/11 resulted in part from a desire to retaliate against what many Muslims saw as American aggression and occupation, the need to demonize Islam would be difficult if not impossible.
The outcry over the building of the mosque, near ground zero, implies that Islam alone was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. According to those who are condemning the building of the mosque, the nineteen suicide terrorists on 9/11 spoke for all Muslims. This is like blaming all Christians for the wars of aggression and occupation because some Christians supported the neo-conservatives’ aggressive wars. http://www.ronpaul.com/2010-08-20/ron-paul-sunshine-patriots-stop-your-demagogy-about-the-nyc-mosque/
This is what I said earlier.
Should the country follow its constitution or should it nurture the prejudice among the majority of the people, --is the question?
This is what I wanted to say.
Should the country follow its constitution that defies prejudice or should it nurture the prejudice that defies the constitution -- is the question?
Syed Rizvi, California
Opposition to the mosque, even if it is from the majority of Americans is based upon prejudice against a certain class, unless there are other reasons that I have not heard of.
Should the country follow its constitution or should it nurture the prejudice among the majority of the people, --is the question?
Opposition to the equal treatment of blacks, at one point on time, also had supports from the majority of the Americans.

mansoor mahmood, You state "for the attack on trade centre and few thousand citizen you have destroyed and killed hundreds and thousands of Afghans, and still are mourning about ground zero and further creating hate and malice,"
Firstly, the Shia, Tajiks, and Uzbeks, supported the American led invasions - therefore, which Afghans are you talking about?
Also, tens of thousands of Shia Muslims were slaughtered by Osama Bin Laden and his cronies, alongside The Taliban who hate Shia Islam.
Do you not blame The Taliban, Pakistan, the I.S.I, international terrorist networks, and so forth?
Or is it just America?
Note that NATO is involved and Turkey is in NATO and their forces are also in Afghanistan.
The US led coalition is arming an Afghan army in order that this force can protect Afghanistan; and it is mainly Western agencies which are trying to devolop an infrastructure.

This issue of a mosque or a Islamic centre, is created by both sides, to avoid further hatred and malice towards each other both sides should restrain from being irrational, and think with a cool mind, for the Muslims to avoid fitna (trouble) and further confrontation with the extreme right wing and Christians is to give up the idea of the centre being built near ground zero (although according to Mr. Ghulam Mohyuddin it is two block away and cannot be seen from GZ and vice versa) as in Islam one should avoid trouble to other mankind and find the path to peace, so they should built the mosque elsewhere, and it is not a matter of giving in to anyone of the extremist, as extremism can only be shamed by taking a peaceful and moderate stance.
As far as the right wing trouble shooter like Sarah Palin and Newt are concerned please stop this dirty politics, people like you are taking the world towards a much bigger catastrophe then ground zero, and let me remind you your thirst for blood will never be quenched, for the attack on trade centre and few thousand citizen you have destroyed and killed hundreds and thousands of Afghans, and still are mourning about ground zero and further creating hate and malice, the trouble is that the Muslims are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, people of your kind will never let peace and harmony prevail on this planet.
This issue is a non-starter when Muslims claim discrimination.
Note how the religion of hate and which persecutes in the name of Islam in nations like Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, the Maldives, Yemen, and others, - is also the same religion that demands equality - however, what about the equality of Hindus/Ahmadiyya/ Christians in Pakistan; what about the equality of all non-Muslims in the lands of Mecca and Medina; what about equality under Islamic Sharia law for non-Muslims and so on.
It is about "the Muslim victim card" and the double-standard is clear for all to see!
Some Muslim nations still support killing apostates for death or putting them in prison - however, the same followers of Islam desire to convert non-Muslims in mainly non-Muslim lands.
Islamic equality in all its biased hatred.
We will kill the Muslim apostate or persecute him/her; however, we demand to have equality in non-Muslim lands.
This is written by a former Muslim.
"In October 2009, the Former Muslims United sent Rauf and his wife the Pledge of Freedom that states Muslims should not be killed if they choose to leave Islam. The couple refused to sign it. So much for their tolerance! Also he has never made it public where the $100 million dollars financing comes from.
There are 2, 300 mosques in the USA and over 200 in New York. There is no need for another one, especially in the proximity of where Muslims massacred thousands of Americans. Why this place? The choice of the Ground Zero is no accident. Muslims have chosen this spot to a) thumb their nose at Americans and at the families of the victims and b) send a message to Muslim world announcing Islam’s victory over the “Great Satan.”
The Cordova House will have a huge symbolic significance for Muslims and it encourages them to enlist in jihad and make the ultimate objective of Islam, which is world domination come true.
Rauf is not a man of peace. He has made very inflammatory comments, such as “one man’s terrorist is another man’s hero.”
I don't know where Mr. Raheel Raza and Mr. Tarek Fatah are getting their facts from.
"If this mosque is being funded by Saudi sources, then it is an even bigger slap in the face of Americans, as nine of the jihadis in the Twin Tower calamity were Saudis." Saudi Arabia is the biggest ally of the United States, they have a base there. As the joke goes, only two countries can get away with anything under the current American hegemony, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
And "Building an exclusive place of worship for Muslims at the place". It is supposed to be an inter-faith centre where anyone can come.
I'm first time visitor to this website and I'm surprised! It’s a great website and its run by great people.
Keep the good work, you are not alone.
