RTI activist Danish Khan has lodged a complaint with NHRC that even Muslims
have objection to Deepika's saffron-coloured bikini because this colour is
Chishti colour (Mere Ghareeb Nawaz!). Imagine, the colour of an actress' bikini
is now a bone of contention for two increasingly belligerent and bovine
communities in India.
This colour
politics has assumed religious hues in today's India. Which colour of panties,
bra or lingerie a woman or an actress should wear and flaunt in public is her
lookout. Why should that bother religionists?
I remember,
many years ago, now defunct 'Debonair' carried a brief piece. A Bombay-based (sorry,
no Mumbai) Muslim hosiery retailer dealing and dabbling in lingerie, told the
writer that he'd never show green panties and bra to his Muslim customers and
earmarked that colour only for Hindu females. The reason was obvious. Green is
sacred to Muslims. Nearly a quarter of a century ago, when this article
appeared, India of yore was still to become saffronised. Now time has come when
a lingerie seller will have to think twice, thrice before showing a particular
colour to his customers lest it should hurt their colour-oriented religious
sensibilities.
We seem to
be hurtling back to regressive times. Both Hindus and Muslims have become too
bellicose and thin-skinned regarding their religion/s. Leo Tolstoy aptly said, “If
you want to destroy a country with the help of only an idea, introduce
religion, potentially the most dangerous idea and see the nation crumble in no
time." So very true.
