Zarb-e-Azb Exposes Jama’at-e-Islami and Jamiat ul-Ulema-e- Islam's Pro-Terrorism Ideology

Finally, Pakistan launched a full-scale crackdown against the domestic and foreign terrorists in the country after the Taliban killed more than thirty people in an attack on Karachi airport last week.  The Pakistan army has killed more than hundred terrorists so far in operations in North Waziristan where the terrorists have bases and sanctuaries.

As Rana Banerji reports in Mail Today two press releases issued by Maj Gen. Asif Saleem Bajwa, Director General, Inter- Services Public Relations ( ISPR) on June 15, 2014 confirmed that the Pakistan Army has started the long- awaited, full- fledged military operation called ‘ Zarb- e- Azb’(“ sharp & cutting” — a reference to Prophet Mohammed’s sword used in the Battles of Badr & Uhad, 623 AD), which will involve aerial strafing, ground deployment through infantry encirclement, artillery and armour movements to seal off selected areas in North Waziristan( NW). The press release emphasised, the action was being taken ‘on the direction of the government’ and would not discriminate ‘between foreign and local’ terrorists, eliminating them ‘regardless of hue and colour’ and wiping out their sanctuaries.

All the opposition political parties including Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf and Altaf Hussain’s MQM have supported the crackdown except Jama’at-e-Islami and Maulana Fazl ur Rahman’s Jamiat ul-Ulema-e- Islam.

This has exposed Jamaat’s duplicity and radical ideology to which Taliban is not a terrorist organisation but a religious group which have only been trying to establish an Islamic caliphate in the country. In the Pakistani parliament when Nawaz Sharif announced the government decision to launched a decisive offensive against the terrorist organisation, all the opposition parties expressed their support and prayed for the success of the offensive, Jama’at-e-Islami and JUI opposed the move giving the lame excuse that it would worsen the situation as if the situation was not already the worst in the country.

It is not the first time that the two parties have opposed any government offensive against them. During the previous government Zardari had convened an all party meeting against Taliban. The Jama’at-e-Islami had refused to participate in the conference on the ground that they did consider Taliban a terrorist organisation. Next, when the Pak government wanted to launch an operation after attack on Malala, JUI leader and Taliban sympathiser had warned Pakistan government against launching any offensive against the Taliban, pushing the government on the back foot.

The Nawaz Sharif government that came to power with the tacit help of Taliban tried to bring the Taliban in the political mainstream by starting dialogue with them. Though they agreed to dialogue, they carried on their tirade against the government and the religious and sectarian minorities. This disturbed the national life of Pakistan and its economy, its social life everything collapsed. Fear, disappointment and frustration overtook every citizen. Nawaz Sharif rightly said, “The government has announced four months ago that it is starting dialogue with the Taliban and had formed a committee for that purpose. We were carrying on the dialogue but they were making attacks on the people and on the government. That’s why we had to launch this operation Zarb-e-Azb to cleanse Pakistan of terrorists and the operation will continue to the achievement of the goal.”

Though Operation Raah-e-Rast and Operation Rah-e-Nijaat have earlier been launched but they met with limited success because of lack of national consensus as some religious leaders who were hand in glove with the terrorist organisations opposed them overtly or covertly. But this time there is a national consensus on the offensive and the whole nation is praying for its success. More than thirty religious organizations, including Shia Ulema Council have expressed their support for the government in this decisive battle against terrorism.

But Jama’at-e-Islami and JUI have stabbed their nation and its citizens in the back by brazenly expressing their support for the Taliban at a critical juncture when the whole country and the nation is fighting their battle of survival. Jama’at-e-Islami has once again proved that their ideology is pro-terrorism, whether it be in Bangladesh or in Pakistan or anywhere else. In Bangladesh too, they supported the killers and rapists during Bangladesh’s war of independence and had allied with the terrorist organizations in the country.
