The Heinous Crimes That ISIS Is Perpetrating Totally Opposed To Islam And Those Killed Fighting For ISIS May Earn Divine Wrath Instead Of Paradise And ‘Hurs’ – An SOS To All Mosque Imams

In a letter dated September last to the chief of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a group of more than 120 prominent Muslim scholars from around the world who investigated his activities, charged him with a plethora of heinous crimes. These included, massacre of civilians, killing hundreds of unarmed captives, destroying churches and looting the homes and properties of the Christian and Yazidi civilians, who were living in peace with the Muslims since the early years of Islam; forcing non-Muslims to convert to Islam or face death, engaging children in war and killing, torturing and terrorizing people through beatings, murder, burying alive, decapitation with knives; mutilating corpses, sticking the decapitated heads of their victims on spikes and rods and, getting their children to kick the severed heads of their victims around like balls and broadcasting it to the world during the World Cup. Not satisfied with mere killing, they mocked those they were going to kill by telling them that they will be killed like sheep, bleating and then indeed butchering them like sheep, and then jeering at corpses. On one instance, they tied Syrian soldiers to barbed wire, cut off the heads of some of them with knives and posted a video of this barbaric act on the internet. The detailed 18-page letter can be accessed on the following link.

Full Text of Muslim Theologians' Open Letter to Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, Refuting His Ideology of Jihad That Justifies Killings of Innocent Civilians, Muslims and Non-Muslims,-refuting-his-ideology-of-jihad-that-justifies-killings-of-innocent-civilians,-muslims-and-non-muslims/d/99389

The scholars issuing the letter unanimously agreed that each of the above listed crimes that ISIS committed in the name of Islam stands in stark contradiction to the Qur’anic message. It also goes without saying that no ‘Alim or ‘Imam in the whole world will agree with the claim of ISIS to following the dictates of the Qur’an or the example of the Prophet, whom the Qur’an describes to be a person endowed with sublime character (68:4) and unshakeable stability (17:74), faithful to his trust (al-amin, 81:21), and (a manifestation of God’s) mercy to the believers (9:61), and to all humanity (21:107). As for the first community of the Muslims that ISIS claims to follow, the Qur’an describes them as the best of community ever raised for mankind (3:110) and the ISIS represents probably the worst community, at least in the history of Islam.

While ISIS does not command any sympathy among the Ulama and Imams of the world – with the exception of its own ideologues, they all share the global disgrace ISIS evokes for its claim to representing true Islam. There is also a growing misconception among the non-Muslims of the world that the Muslims’ claim of Islam being a religion of peace is a mere propaganda and a bluff.

The sad reality is ISIS is continuing to attract recruits, especially from among the new converts or those having no knowledge of the message of Islam, and those opposed to Islam are producing pamphlets with false information and quotations to directly implicate the Qur’an as the ideological fount of ISIS. This renders each and every Muslim who reads the Qur’an an accomplice or ideological ally of the ISIS, which is a lie of colossal measure and overturns the notion of Islam from a religion of peace to a barbaric cult, not fit for today’s civilization. Hence the ISIS must be resisted at the grass-root level of Islamic society.

It is therefore time that the Imams in each mosque all over the world – especially the West mount a concerted campaign, such as by way of Friday sermons (khutba) and social and media preaching to refute the notion that groups like ISIL somehow represent Islam, and warn the lay Muslims that those who die when committing such acts are not likely to go down as "martyrs" and more likely to incur divine wrath for causing ‘fasad’ and ‘baghya’ that the Qur’an condemns in no uncertain terms.

The truth is, in historical perspective ISIS has far exceeded the early Kharijites in its barbarism, bestiality and killing spree, in committing atrocities against innocent civilians, Muslims and non-Muslims alike and in destroying all kinds of civil amenities. It is also committing crimes that date back to the pre-Islamic jahilliyah – notably mutilation of corpses, and meting out punishment that God threatened humanity with - burning people alive. Since Caliph Umar had outlawed the Kharijites – regarded them as terrorist-apostates who had forfeited their claim to the faith of Islam, the ISIS can be paralleled with them and no Alim or Imam should have any fear in warning the community as proposed above: dying while fighting for ISIS may earn them hell, not heaven.

The author is only discharging his trust as a defender of Islam and it is up to the fraternity of Ulama and Imams to pay heed to his call or ignore it. This call follows an earlier call to declare ISIS as the Kharijites of this era:

  1. How do people miss the point that among the many influences acting on Al Baghdadi which made him what he has become, the most significant  are his experiences as an Iraqi, whose country was ravaged by a most unjust war. The following is from an article in Newsweek:

He (Al Baghdadi) was always known “for being so quiet you could hardly hear his voice,” says a former neighbor, Tareeq Hameed. “He was peaceful. He didn’t like to chat a lot.” Acquaintances say he grew up studious, pious and calm. He was introverted, without many friends.

London-based Iraqi analyst Sajad Jiyad from the Iraqi Institute for Economic Reform says “I would be surprised if he was a religious person, as most of the Iraqis who became involved in jihadist groups were secular Baathists before 2003”.

    LinkedIn for Terrorists
The origins of al-Baghdadi’s ruthlessness lie in the bloodshed unleashed after the U.S. invasion to topple Saddam.
The Sunni insurgents who stayed began their deadly attacks, initially targeting U.S.-led forces.

It is believed al-Baghdadi helped establish the terrorist group Jamaat Jaish Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jamaa. In either 2004 or 2005—like most things about al-Baghdadi, the dates are unclear—he was captured in Fallujah by U.S. forces, apparently part of a sweeping roundup to capture an associate of the Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al- Zarqawi.

After his arrest, al-Baghdadi was detained in Camp Bucca, a facility in southern Iraq, near Umm Qasr, where many former Abu Ghraib detainees were also held. His status was that of a “civilian internee,” which meant he was linked to a terrorist group but had not been caught actively engaging in terrorist activities.

The exact amount of time al-Baghdadi spent at Camp Bucca is unclear. Some U.S. military officials who worked at the prison remember al-Baghdadi being there between 2006 and 2007; others say he was there between 2006 and 2009. Whether he spent one or two years there, it was a fruitful time for him. Camp Bucca was like a summer camp for ambitious terrorists. Under the eyes of the Americans, the inmates interacted, traded information and battle tactics and made important contacts for the future. They were inspired by the abuses at Abu Ghraib, the success of al-Zarqawi and the discontent among Sunnis. Historian Jeremi Suri calls the prison “virtual terrorist university.”

“Camp Bucca was a place where a lot of jihadists got to know each other and a lot of former Baathists radicalized and linked up with Islamic groups,” saysAron Lund, editor of the Syria in Crisis website. “Lots and lots of Islamic State leaders passed through here.”

Jiyad says it’s unlikely al-Baghdadi was an active militant prior to the U.S. invasion, and he believes Camp Bucca was a turning point for al-Baghdadi.

So it is not Islam which has made him what he has become. For those who would like to exonerate the role of the US in fomenting extremism, it is possibly a necessary fiction to blame Islam for it.

  2. It is a useful, and possibly necessary fiction that ISIL is unIslamic.  But until the decent majority of Muslims recognise that ISIL is motivated by Islamic teaching there can be no progress. Mainstream Islam must repudiate the more violent passages in the Holy Quran.

  4. Dear Kalim,

Are we going to accommodate in Islam the most heinous crimes as verified and reported by 120 scholars from around the world as listed in the article just because of the sufferings of the Muslims at various regions in the word - brutal and enduring occupation of Israel, America's barrage of vetoes in its favour, its full fledged wars against two Muslim lands with colossal loss of life and destruction and so forth.

I am afraid you are mixing up religion with politics and not acting as a witness to the Islamic message to humanity. No amount of sufferings to the Muslim community can justify the list of crimes IN THE NAME of Islam. This is what I believe as Muslim. Here is the full list of ISIS crimes as summarized from the letter to its chief from 120 Islamic scholars from around the world tabled in my article referenced below:

Doctoring the interpretation of the verse 21:107 which reads ‘We have sent you as a mercy to all the worlds. ’(Al-Anbiya’,22: 107), He quotes: “We have sent you (with a sword) as a mercy to all the worlds”

    Killing thousands of prisoners

Killing 600 unarmed captives at el-Zor.

Destroying churches, and looting the homes and properties of the Christians.

Killing some Christian civilians and forcing many others to flee their homes with nothing but their lives and the clothes on their backs.

Fighting the Yazidis under the banner of jihad though they neither fought you nor Muslims.

Giving the choice to Yazidiz to either convert to Islam or be killed.

Killing hundreds of Yazidiz and burying them in mass graves.

Had it not been for American and Kurdish intervention, tens of thousands of their men, women, children and elderly would have been killed.

Coercing everyone living under their control in every matter, great or small, even in matters which are between the individual and God.

Engaging children in war and killing. Some are taking up arms and others are playing with the severed heads of their victims.

“Implementing Hudud (amputation) punishment without exercising utmost restraint and extending it to minor offences as well, which defy the spirit of the Qur’an and Sharia Law.

As per eye witnesses and their own claims) torturing and terrorizing people through beatings; murder, burying alive, decapitation with knives

Committing massacres — their fighters mock those they are about to kill by telling them that they will be killed like sheep, bleating and then indeed butchering them like sheep. Not satisfied with mere killing; they add humiliation, debasement and mockery to it.

Not only have they mutilated corpses, they have stuck the decapitated heads of their victims on spikes and rods and kicked their severed heads around like balls and broadcast it to the world during the World Cup.

Jeering at corpses and severed heads and broadcasting these gruesome acts from the military bases they overran in Syria.

     ·         Tying Syrian soldiers of the 17th Division in North-eastern Syria to barbed wire, cut off the heads of some of them with knives and posting a video of this on the internet …’.

  5. We are  basing conclusions hearing only one sided media. I would like to hear what the other side has to say before finally damning them. While what we have been hearing is definitely not justified yet it has been a deterrent in a way and made the world sit up and ask: Why do they do it??? Otherwise all cruelties on Muslims were being brushed aside for ages by a single veto at the UN!!
