The Salafi Wave in South Asia– Episode 4

By Khama Bagosh Madzallah, New Age Islam

It is not common on any level to discuss the growing Salafism in Pakistan because it can prove dangerous. People neither like to say nor listen anything on this issue. Even those who try to do so on any forum make it sure that no ‘stranger’ can participate in the discussion. No report of such discussion ever came from any educational institution or newspaper though religious or sectarian organisations regularly hold programmes and seminars on special or general days to guide and educate the new generation on current issues. Religious madrasas and government educational institutions hold training sessions on social, moral and political topics regularly and Pakistani newspapers and TV channel cover them. If anyone protests against it or proposes alternatives to these programmes or calls them communal and extremists, he is called anti-Islam, a well wisher and agent of the infidels and above all he deserves to be eliminated. Such people can be easily eliminated or told to mend their ways. A third option is that they should leave the ‘Dar ul Islam’ as we have witnessed in Pakistan a number of times. The latest example is that of renowned Islamic scholar Javed Ahmad Ghamidi who propagated a moderate and non-violent Islam. Many a time he had to face severe criticism in his real life or on the media. But when he refused to budge from his point of view, he had to leave Pakistan because he received death threats from armed Salafist groups and Taliban. After leaving the country he admitted in a TV interview that he left Pakistan because other innocent people too would have been killed along with him as the Salafists wanted to blow up his house.

Pakistani Salafists are against any kind of banking. They believe that interest-based banks of Pakistan and their account holders are at war with God, though Jamat ud Dawah and its Jihadi affiliate Lashkar-e-Taiba and the welfare organisation Falah-e-Insaniyat Foundation have their accounts in interest-based banks and appeal to the people to make donations through these banks. Hafiz Sayeed, Maulana Ameer Hamzah and other office bearers of Jamat ud Dawah regularly write about the prohibition of interest and the bane of interest based transaction of Pakistani banks in the journal of Al Dawah, Al Harmain and English journals Voice of Islam and Vision Islam. Their point of view is that since the account holders of banks of Pakistan and other countries are directly at war with God, they have no chance of going to heaven though the most favourite act in the eyes of God jihad is funded by God fearing sympathetic Muslims through these interest based banks.  All the banks running in Pakistan collect Zakat and all the expenses of the constructions of mosques and religious madrasas are carried out with this money. For example, top on the list of donors to Lashkar-e-Taiba are the jewellers of Pakistan. Those who know the nature of this business know that if they practice even the lowest level of honesty in this business they cannot save a penny. Therefore, the business of jewellery is akin to adulteration and corruption to ensure profit. The question is: can a sacred duty like jihad be carried out with the money earned through deceit and corruption? On the other hand, if you enter a jewellery shop in Pakistan you come across gilded Quranic verses which will make you believe that the jeweller is a religious person who gives top priority to religion in everything including his business. The jewellers of Pakistan make the biggest donations to the Salafist Jihadi organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba which helps them to carry on with their ‘jihad’.

Now Salafism rules the roost in offices, educational institutions and in general public places. Youngsters with shaved moustaches and long beards in loose robes and young girls covered in black Burqas and socks from head to toe present the picture of intolerant Islam. These youngsters propagate their ideology on Facebook, twitter and in their class rooms daily and discuss the un-Islamic customs and rites and innovations that have crept in the local society. They are aggrieved at the fact that Pakistan that was created in the name of Islam was under the onslaught of Kafirs and Mushriks. They believe that Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a practicing Muslim who has been presented by the so-called historians of Pakistan as a secular leader. They present the logic that if Jinnah was not a practising Muslim he would not have said that the foundation of Pakistan was laid the day a local person had converted to Islam here. Moreover, they know by heart Jinnah’s golden statements highlighting the notion of a separate state meant only for Muslims. The statements prove that in Pakistan non-Muslims do not enjoy equal rights with Muslims.

These youth call the military ruler Ziaul Haque a true practicing Muslim who not only had a great love for the Muslim community but also defeated the atheistic country Russia and broke it into pieces. Afghan jihad is the miracle of the 21st century that has forced the Kafirs of the world to bite the dust and the western world after facing a humiliating defeat in Afghanistan was fleeing from there. They love the treasure of 100+ atom bombs of Pakistan which will be used to destroy India, Israel, America and Britain. In their view, only the leaders of Pakistan are cowards and capricious otherwise the entire atheist world would have succumbed before Pakistan long ago. Young girls consider terrorist aide Afia Siddiqui their ideal and hero who is in the captivity of Kafirs because of a notorious and anti-Islam ruler Pervez Musharraf. Various books on Afia are available in market and many new born girls have been named after Afia. There is no second thought on Osama Bin Laden being a hero and when the rule of greedy and anti-Islam rulers will be over, the Pakistani parliament will pass the resolution to celebrate the martyrdom day of Osama bin Laden as the national day and it is hoped that a bravery award will be instituted in the name of Osama to pay rich tribute to this great son of Islam.

It is a tragedy that the popular media of Pakistan is unable to present this latest image of Pakistan. The influence of a large section of hard-line people in the media has played an important role in it as they want people to see things through the glass of their ideology. Everything apart from it is prohibited and un-Islamic. For example, the Pakistani media cannot present the issue of flesh trade flourishing in various cities of Pakistan as it may expose the Islamic society. It also does not want to say anything on sexual exploitation of children in madrasas in Pakistan because if it does so, it will show the enemies of Islam its Achilles’ heel. Last year, a heavy weight leader of Pakistan, Mullah Tahir Ashrafi who is known to have close links with Taliban and other extremist organisations as well as some foreign embassies and is also the head of Pakistan Ulema Council was arrested after he misbehaved with police in a drunken state in a party in the German embassy. Mullah’s friend got him released with the help of their rapport in the army and bureaucracy. After his release, he tried to give the impression on a TV channel that he had been kidnapped. It was believed that a splinter group of Taliban was behind the kidnap. But shortly after that, Mullah Ashrafi appeared and denied having been kidnapped.

The links and power of this mullah can be gauged by the fact that he was waiting with garlands to greet the head of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Maulana Malik Ishaque when he was released from jail. The Pakistani media did not say a word about the drunken brawl and then kidnap story of the head of Pakistan Ulema Council and so the mullah’s sanctity and dignity is intact.

About Khama Bagosh Madzallah: A confused Muslim, unable to understand the real definition of Muslimhood. Is a Muslim the standard bearer of Islam in reality? Or just an enemy of fellow Muslims? What is the Islamic ideology about rest of the world? What is its culture and history? Why the Muslims are in a conflict not just with other religions but other cultures as well?
