Zakir Naik's Latest Shocker: Islamic Preacher Says 'Unmarried Woman Is Public Property'

Islamic Preacher Zakir Naik

-----

Oct 8, 2024

by: Priya Pareek

New Delhi: Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, wanted in India on terrorism-related charges, sparked widespread outrage with his remarks as he compared unmarried women with 'prostitutes', calling them "public property." Zakir Naik is on a visit to Pakistan where he was seen delivering 'lectures' at mass gatherings.

In a widely circulated video on X, Naik could be heard saying that an unmarried woman cannot be respected in society. According to Naik, if there are no single men available, then such a woman should marry an already married man to be respected or she should be referred to as "public property."

"There is no way an unmarried woman can be respected. So, they have two options. First option is to get married to a man who already has a wife or she will become a 'Bazaari Aurat'. She will become a public property. I don't have a better word. So if I present this scenario to an unmarried woman, any respectable woman will opt for the first option," Naik said in the viral video.

Zakir Naik Sparks Outrage

Zakir Naik's remarks have ignited a fierce backlash, with social media platforms ablaze with criticism. Several internet users condemned Naik's comments as deeply misogynistic and harmful to women’s rights and some also took a jibe at Pakistan for promoting this mindset on their soil.

"Zakir Naik says a woman must marry, even if it means being a second wife, to earn respect. Because, apparently, a woman's worth is decided by marital status! Congrats, Pakistan, for giving this mindset a platform," said one user on X.

Another irked user added, "Islamist Zakir Naik is openly a sick misogynist. Pakistan exposed again."

"Zakir Naik declares that an unmarried woman can’t be respected unless she marries an already married man—otherwise, she's "public property"! This medieval mindset is shocking and appalling. Congratulations, Pakistan—you deserve him. This is the kind of regressive ideology being celebrated. How much longer will such dangerous views be tolerated?" said a third netizen.

Zakir Naik In Pakistan

Meanwhile, Zakir Naik recently slammed Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for not waiving charges for extra baggage while he was travelling to the country from Malaysia, and instead offering him a 50 per cent discount. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) reportedly offered the fugitive preacher a 50 percent discount which he grudgingly refused. In a viral video, Naik drew a contrast between India and Muslim-majority Pakistan, saying even a Hindu officer would allow him to carry luggage for free.

“I spoke to the CEO of PIA. He said we can do anything for you doctor. Six of us were travelling: I said we had 500 or 600 kg extra luggage. He said we will give you 50 percent luggage. I said, if you want to give, give a 100 percent discount, otherwise forget about it. If anyone sees me in India, even a non-Muslim will let me in for free. This is India,” he added.

He said, “On my visa, it says that I am a state guest and the CEO of PIA says well give a 50 percent discount. They are charging so high, I felt so sad that Dr. Zakir Naik is coming to the country. I don’t want you discount.”

During one of his speeches, Naik earlier also claimed that those residing in Pakistan have a better chance of going to ‘Jannat’ (paradise), than those living in the United States, a statement condemned by even those living in Pakistan.

Mahmood Achakzai Fears Imran May Be Treated Like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto

Saleem Shahid

 October 8, 2024

QUETTA: Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai on Monday declared that the tragic mistreatment meted out to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto would not be allowed to be repeated with Imran Khan.

Addressing a public meeting in Qilla Saifullah in honour of the martyrs of democracy, Mr Achakzai said if military’s alleged interference in politics continued, Pakistan would keep facing political instability and its future would remain marred by uncertainty.

He vowed to resist any attempts to undermine the Constitution in the name of amendments.

The veteran politician recalled the events of Oct 7, 1983 when the PkMAP held a procession in Quetta calling for then-dictator Gen Zia to restore the Constitution and democracy. The response from the martial law authorities was brutal, he said, adding that the gunfire left four party workers dead and scores injured.

Besides, he said, hundreds of participants were rounded up during the crackdown.

He pointed out that PTI is deeply concerned about the life of Mr Khan, fearing that history could repeat itself and their incarcerated leader could be subjected to the same treatment that was meted out to Bhutto.

Mr Achakzai pointed out that during the PTI’s recent protests, the link between Islamabad and Rawalpindi was cut off and the party’s workers faced alleged state repression while protesting for their leader’s release.

The PkMAP chief demanded that Mr Khan and other political prisoners be freed immediately, warning that failure to do so could push the country towards civil unrest.

He expressed solidarity with judiciary for standing up for the supremacy of Constitution and reaffirmed his party’s long-standing commitment to democracy and constitutional supremacy.

Mr Achakzai criticised the government for imposing a ban on the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement and called the move unconstitutional and a violation of the basic democratic right to freedom of assembly, speech, and association.

He condemned Israel for committing genocide of Palestinian people and called on the global community, particularly the Muslim world, to intervene for the resolution of the crisis based on the two-state solution.

The PkMAP leader also spoke about the Feb 8 elections, calling them grossly rigged and asserting that the government formed as a result had neither constitutional nor moral legitimacy.

October 7 Anniversary: Jewish and Muslim People in The UK Reflect On What's Changed This Year

 7 October 2024'

New figures show both anti-Semitic and Islamophobic hate crime incidents have hit record highs since October 7 and the year of conflict in Gaza since, ITV News' Sam Holder and Shehab Khan report

Words by ITV News Producers Maya Bowles and Roohi Hasan

Thousands of miles from Israel and Gaza, people from both Jewish and Muslim communities in Britain have felt the impact of the horrors of October 7 and the conflict that followed.

A year ago, the Hamas attacks on Israel that day led to 1,200 people being killed, the biggest loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust.

The attacks which followed by Israel on Gaza over the last 12 months have led to more than 40,000 people being killed. That's the highest number of women and children killed in a one-year period in any conflict globally in the last two decades, according to Oxfam.

Both antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crime incidents have soared. For British Jews, 2023 was the worst year for UK antisemitism since records began 40 years ago, according to the Community Security Trust, and for Muslims the highest in 14 years according to charity Tell Mama - and that's only counting the crimes actually reported.

ITV News reporters Sam Holder and Shehab Khan spent time with Jewish and Muslim communities respectively to hear about how their lives have changed in the last year.

“I am still extremely proud of my like Jewish identity, but I don't feel safe in public": British Jews share their experiences one year on from October 7

The one-year anniversary of October 7 is an incredibly emotional and painful time for many British Jews, some of whom have relatives who were at the Nova festival or related to those amongst the 1,200 killed or the families of the hostages taken.

But the year has been made worse for many because of the repercussions of events abroad.

Even schoolchildren are bearing the brunt.

“I had someone make comments about how he was essentially telling me he was pro concentration camps in the Holocaust," one young student told ITV News.

"We were in a work experience setting with people from, you know, different faiths, different cultures.

"What made me even more, you know, upset or even more annoyed was that no one dealt with it."

Simon was travelling by train when he was verbally abused and spat at by another passenger.

"Your religion supports killing Muslims," the passenger said.

The man targeted him for wearing a kippah. Nobody helped.

"I feel that anyone living in the UK should be able to display symbols of their religion whether it's a cross, whether it's a hijab or a turban or whatever it is, and not feel that they would be discriminated [against] or attacked," he said.

We also met three mums who all gave birth after October 7.

One told us how she and her family had made some tough choices in order to not be at risk as hate crime grew, including removing her daughter from nursery and advising her husband to remove his kippah.

For Joanne, it was important to name her daughter after one of the victims.

"It was just quite poignant for me... This terrible tumultuous thing that was happening whilst I was very pregnant... They won't be forgotten."

Another mum described it as "the worst year to be Jewish I've ever had".

"I feel like I’ve always got to have this really nuanced political, considerate response to anything that ever happens for Jewish people and Israel and I’m literally just a mum trying to live my life."

The question for these mums is whether their children will face the same scrutiny.

"Every day I wake up just filled with despair": British Muslims share their experiences one year on from October 7

As the death toll in Gaza exceeds 40,000, and the Israeli military campaign extends into Lebanon, many Muslims in Britain feel a profound sense of grief and anger.

People across the UK have been taking to the streets every week to call for a ceasefire, including Farah and Imran Kausar, who have attended protests with their three young children.

“I just feel like I’m in constant mourning, and every day I wake up just filled with despair," Farah told ITV News.

“Attending these protests is just a way of trying to do, no matter how small, something vaguely positive," she said.

"I know there are other 11-year-old kids like me - I can't imagine what they must be going through," one of Farah and Imran's sons said

Sulaiman, 13, said he goes to the protests with his parents to “advocate for the Palestinian citizens who don’t have a voice”.

Farah and Imran have attended a number of anti-war protests in the past, but they say they’ve been demonised and labelled as extremists for campaigning for a ceasefire in Palestine.

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman called the protests “hate marches”, which sparked a huge backlash.

“The irony being is that all we’re asking is for peace… To minimise it and reduce it and almost invalidate our genuine concerns has been incredibly disappointing," Farah said.

The conflict is also having a physical impact on people’s safety in the UK, with a record rise in Islamophobic hate crime incidents since October last year.

Tell Mama UK, who record anti-Muslim hate incidents, said there were 4,971 reported incidents of anti-Muslim hate between October 7, 2023, and September 30, 2024, the highest total for 14 years.

Ruby was on her way home from a pro-Palestine protest with a group of friends when she was verbally attacked by a man who called her “a cancer on this country”.

Subscribe free to our weekly newsletter for exclusive and original coverage from ITV News. Direct to your inbox every Friday morning.

The man also accused her and the group she was with of being responsible for Hamas’ rocket fire into Israel.

“We are always in a constant state of danger," she said.

“It’s sadly becoming the norm now, it’s really worrying because this is our home, this is our country, we are British.

“We should be able to feel comfortable walking down the street… but things have changed so much that we don’t feel safe," Ruby told ITV News.

One year on, Gaza is regularly mentioned in mosques up and down the country.

Adhem Shaquil is an imam in Birmingham, and says some at his mosque have struggled to see the severity of the conflict.

“During our religious sermons it comes up consistently - on a weekly basis, we'll have to mention it," he said.

“The images are totally horrific and we don't want to be in a position where we seem like we're turning a blind eye.”

With so many feeling ignored, earlier this year some British Muslims took to the ballot box to express their frustrations, with five independent pro Gaza MPs winning seats at the last election.

"When the Gaza issue happened - that changed everything," Nasir said

Nasir Rafiq works on community cohesion in the Midlands, and he believes this is a permanent change to our political landscape

“There was a general disillusionment against politicians, but when the Gaza issue happened, that changed everything.

“What they expected from politicians, politicians were not delivering, and this is where the market of independents came in," he told ITV News.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Refers to October 7 as "Dark Day" in Country's History

October 7, 2024

Twenty-three years ago, on October 7, 2001, the United States launched its airstrikes on Afghan soil. The Islamic Emirate, in recognition of this day, stated that the US attack on Afghanistan took the lives of thousands of people and that, in the end, the country and its allies were defeated and driven out of Afghanistan.

The Islamic Emirate has marked October 7 as a dark day in the country's history.

Hamdullah Fitrat, Deputy Spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, told TOLOnews: "We consider this day a dark day in Afghanistan's history. It was a cruel attack on Afghanistan, resulting in the martyrdom, injury, imprisonment, and displacement of thousands of innocent Afghans. The occupiers imposed their puppets on Afghanistan for twenty years, and after two decades, the Americans realized that attacking Afghanistan was a big mistake."

The US attack, which began on October 7, led to a twenty-year military presence of the US and its allies in Afghanistan.

"What was needed, they did not do. Afghans do not accept occupation, and besides this, they paid no attention to Afghan cultural and religious values. They raided the people, oppressed them, bombed funerals, and killed innocent people," said Moeen Gul Samkanai, a political analyst.

"They wanted to occupy Central Asia and control the entire Asian continent, which they couldn’t achieve in twenty years. Despite their own losses and financial damages, they imprisoned the people of Afghanistan, and their private prisons were filled with our Afghans, whether in Bagram or Guantanamo," said Kamran Aman, a military analyst.

Although the US had a twenty-year military presence in Afghanistan, in the end, on August 15, 2021, the Islamic Emirate gained control of the country, and the last US soldier left Afghanistan on August 31 of the same year, marking the end of America’s longest war in Afghanistan.

Muslim Faith Leaders (Imams) Endorse Kamala Harris in Open Letter

Vice President Kamala Harris

----

October 7, 2024

A group of imams endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in an open letter shared first with NBC News on Sunday, a critical boost as she steps up her efforts to win back disaffected Muslim voters amid the Israel-Hamas war.

Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has faced widespread anger from Muslim and Arab voters over the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza, and the community could be critical some battleground states, like Michigan.

The 25 Islamic religious leaders who signed the letter, which comes a year after the Oct. 7 terrorist attack that sparked the war, argue that Muslim voters have a duty to think logically about their voting decisions and that backing Harris “far outweighs the harms of the other options."

“She is a committed ceasefire candidate too and is the best option for ending the bloodshed in Gaza and now Lebanon,” they wrote.

The imams argued that former President Donald Trump is a threat to their community.

“Knowingly enabling someone like Donald Trump to return to office, whether by voting directly for him or for a third-party candidate, is both a moral and a strategic failure. Particularly in swing states, a vote for a third party could enable Trump to win that state and therefore the elections,” they wrote.

“Given [Trump’s] well-documented history of harming our communities and country, as well as what he has promised he will do to Muslims and Palestinians should he return, it is incumbent upon us not to allow our high emotions to dictate our actions to our detriment,” the letter reads.

The letter argues that the leaders have “a responsibility, an Amana, not to place our community in harm’s way."

It’s a notable endorsement from a community among which Harris is hurting for prominent allies.

Several prominent Muslim groups have endorsed anti-war third-party candidates like Jill Stein and Cornel West, while others started a movement called Abandon Harris to punish Democrats for the Biden administration's steadfast support for Israel.

Many other Muslim groups and leaders that have endorsed Democrats in the past have withheld their endorsements or declined to back any candidate for president.

Some critics have felt Harris has largely abandoned the Muslim and Arab American community. About 700,000 people voted “uncommitted” in protest of President Joe Biden’s policies during this year’s Democratic primaries. And the delegates' request for a Palestinian speaker at the Democratic National Convention over the summer was denied.

Mohamed Elsanousi, a Muslim community leader who helped organize the pro-Harris letter, noted that most of the 25 signers are permanent imams with sizable congregations, including some from swing states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina.

He said he hopes the support from religious leaders will make conflicted Muslim voters feel more comfortable voting for Harris, despite some prominent Muslim voices’ intense opposition to her.

“I am really hopeful that with this letter a lot of people will change their minds,” Elsanousi said. “The momentum [for Harris] in the community is growing.”

The letter is the latest effort in the push on behalf of the Harris campaign to reach out to those voters after she met with Muslim community leaders in Michigan on Friday. Her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, addressed a virtual event hosted by a pro-Harris Muslim get-out-vote group Thursday. Also last week, the vice president’s national security adviser met with Arab and Muslim community leaders in Washington.

“The Vice President is committed to work to earn every vote, unite our country, and to be a President for all Americans,” Nasrina Bargzie, the director of Muslim and Arab American outreach for the campaign, said in a statement. “Throughout her career, Vice President Harris has been steadfast in her support of our country’s diverse Muslim community, including ensuring that they can live free from the hateful policies of the Trump administration.”

Islamabad: Islamic Emirate should fix its own problems instead of lecturing us

 October 7, 2024

Following the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan's (IEA) call on the Pakistani government to negotiate with its political opponents, Islamabad on Monday asked IEA to fix its own problems instead of “lecturing a democratic country.”

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson rejected the Afghan Foreign Ministry's statement on the recent protests in Pakistan as "unacceptable and deplorable" interference in the country's internal affairs.

The statement stressed that the Islamic Emirate should prioritize inclusivity, ensure the right of girls to education and not allow terrorist groups to pose a threat to neighboring countries.

Amid protests by supporters of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, IEA said on Sunday that tensions between Pakistan’s government and the opposition have reached a worrying level and could have a negative impact on the entire region.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi said the best way to meet the "legitimate demands of the people" was to hold negotiations.

New cases lodged against Imran Khan, CM Gandapur after D-Chowk protest

By Ayaz Akbar Yousafzai

October 08, 2024

After the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged a protest at D-Chowk in Islamabad on October 4, five new cases were brought against Imran Khan, the party's founder on Monday.

Besides Imran, several other party leaders have been implicated in these new cases related to the protest last week. Those facing fresh charges include Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and former Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid, who face two cases each.

On October 3, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had warned the Imran-founded party against launching an "onslaught on Islamabad”. He called on the PTI leadership to reconsider their decision to protest, stating, “No one will be allowed for an onrush on Islamabad."

The protest coincided with the final day of the Malaysian prime minister’s visit to Pakistan and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

The former ruling party launched its anti-government campaign for the “independence” of the judiciary and the release of the former prime minister from jail.

Several PTI leaders and Imran's sisters — Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan — were detained during the protest demonstration on Friday. The case against Imran’s sisters was registered at the Kohsar Police Station on serious charges, including 16 provisions related to terrorism.

A D-Chowk protest case has been filed against PTI Islamabad President Amir Masood Mughal at Tarnol Police Station. The FIR also implicates the PTI founder, the KP chief minister among 34 others in addition to 350 unidentified individuals.

The case filed at Tarnol police station was registered under 13 different legal provisions, including one related to terrorism.

Additionally, another case has been lodged at the Karachi Company police station against the PTI founder, Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, and KP CM's Adviser on Information Barrister Saif under eight serious sections of the law.

The FIR which named 20 other individuals and 250 unidentified persons, accuses PTI leaders Azam Swati and Khurshid of providing financial support.

A similar case has been filed at Ramna Police Station against the PTI founder and 50 unidentified individuals under six serious sections.

Moreover, the former premier has been named in another FIR registered at Golra Police Station under six serious sections. The FIR also names around 30 others and 200 unknown individuals.

Similarly, Imran has been booked in another FIR at I-9 Police Station on ten serious charges. Other individuals implicated in the case include Gandapur, Khurshid and Malik Amir along with around 20 individuals in addition to 300 other unidentified people.

'Even A Non-Muslim in India WillAllow Me To Carry Luggage For Free: Zakir Naik Rips Into PIA

OCTOBER 08, 2024

Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik was left fuming during his Pakistan visit after the country’s national carrier refused to waive charges for extra baggage while he was travelling to the country.

While speaking about the state of affairs in Pakistan, he said, “On my visa, it says that I am a state guest and the CEO of PIA says well give a 50 percent discount. They are charging so high, I felt so sad that Dr. Zakir Naik is coming to the country. I don’t want you discount.”

Naik, who is living in Malaysia, began a nearly month-long visit to Pakistan last week. Known for making preposterous claims, Naik on Sunday chided a Pashtun girl when he was asked about pedophilia during one of his speeches. When asked about hardcore religious society and the issue of pedophilia during one of his sermons, Naik said, “This is a wrong question and you should say sorry to God. When pressed further, he said, “I wouldn’t reply and wanted her to say sorry first.”

During one of his speeches, Naik earlier also claimed that those residing in Pakistan have a better chance of going to ‘Jannat’ (paradise), than those living in the United States, a statement condemned by even those living in Pakistan. Reposting the same, a Pakistani national wrote, “This man Zakir Naik is not only a fraudster but takes ridiculousness to a whole new level… he’s a disgrace.”

As Naik made waves on social media for his comments, top government sources told CNN-News18 that Naik is trying not only to insult India but also Indian religious figures.” “Now the onus is on the Pakistan government to stop him so that the sentiments of any Indian and Hindus staying in Pakistan is not affected,” the sources said.

The sources said that controversial Islamic preacher is brought to Pakistan with a defined agenda and motive only to insult Hindus. “India is very clear that Pakistan is doing this insult deliberately and we will definitely take this agenda in related forums,” it added.

India last week had described as “condemnable” the way Pakistan feted Naik but added that it was not “surprising”. “We have seen reports that he (Zakir Naik) has been feted in Pakistan. He has been warmly welcomed there,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing. “It is not surprising for us that an Indian fugitive has received a high-level welcome in Pakistan. It is something which is disappointing and condemnable but at the same time it is not surprising,” he said.

Ban imposed on visitors to Adiala jail

Mohammad Asghar

 October 8, 2024

RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government on Monday imposed a ban on visitors of prisoners in Adiala jail till October 18.

The ban also applies to all types of meetings of lawyers, political personalities and family members with PTI founder Imran Khan.

The decision was taken due to security concerns. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)’s forthcoming summit in Islamabad has prompted authorities to adopt unprecedented security in the twin cities, including Adiala jail.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has accused the PTI of trying to disrupt the SCO summit. He emphasised that the government was committed to ensuring peaceful conduct of the summit.

Advance security protocol teams of the member countries have already started arriving in Islamabad while law enforcement agencies are preparing plans to ensure foolproof security.

Moreover, Army has been deployed in the federal capital territory to ensure security for the summit which is scheduled to be held on Oct 15-16.

Rangers were already stationed in the capital. The army has taken over security duties from Oct 5 till Oct 17.

‘Cops who killed Dr Kunbhar being brought back to Mirpurkhas’

Our Correspondent

MIRPURKHAS: The three policemen nominated in the FIR lodged by the family of blasphemy suspect Dr Shah Nawaz Kunbhar were being escorted to Mirpurkhas on Monday evening after their arrest by the Punjab police, according to sources.

They said that SI Hidayatullah Narejo and constables Nadir and Qadir had gone underground after an uproar across Sindh over the killing of Dr Kunbhar in an encounter in Mirpurkhas.

The doctor, a resident of Umerkot district, was arrested in Karachi and handed over to the Mirpurkhas police after violent reaction over some of the social media posts attributed to him. The posts were taken as blasphemous and they triggered a series of protests and demonstrations organised by religious entities in Sindh.

Only a day after taking custody of Dr Kunbhar, the Mirpurkhas police declared that he was shot dead in an “encounter”. The claim fueled the unrest as the bereaved family and their sympathisers also took to the street for justice. The police team involved in the so-called encounter went underground to escape agitators’ wrath.

On Monday, it was learnt that all the three policemen were tracked down by the Punjab police and taken into custody.

A team of Mirpurkhas police officers proceeded to Punjab to take custody of the policemen and bring them back to Mirpurkhas.

According to a source, the policemen had kept their mobile phones switched off to avoid being located but the Punjab police using modern technology succeeded in tracking them down.

Meanwhile, the Mirpurkhas Anti-Terrorism Court on Monday granted five-day interim bail to Pir Agha Umer Jan Sarhandi, a cleric also nominated in an FIR pertaining to the burning of Dr Kunbhar’s body. He has been accused of inciting a mob to the act of burning the body.

JI-led rally calls for united Muslim response to Israeli actions

Our Staff Reporter

October 07, 2024

KARACHI   -   Karachiites marched on Shahrah-e-Faisal on appeal of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to express solidarity with Palestinians and other victims of Israeli brutalities, here on Sunday.

JI Pakistan Emir Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman delivered the key note address, whereas leaders belonging to other political parties and various segments of the society also expressed their views. In a unique show of agreement, political workers, particularly belonging to the Pakistan People Party, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen and others participated overwhelmingly in the march.  Speaking on the occasion, JI Pakistan Emir Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman condemned Israel over its inhumane behaviour, brutalities, genocide and extension plans. He said that unfortunately, the Muslim Ummah was not playing its due role. “The Muslim block can’t handle Israel despite the fact that it has millions strong armies, airpower and all types of missiles and even nukes in its arsenal,” he said. He warned the Muslim countries and their armies that Israel would not spare anyone and sooner or later they will be on target if the Zionist regime in Israel is not pushed back.

The JI leader highlighted that the Israeli leader has recently once again unmasked it’s extension plan and come up with a new map, challenging sovereignty of various countries but the United Nations could do nothing. On the occasion, he paid a rich tribute to Gaza people for their steadfastness in the face of Israeli brutalities and crimes against humanity.

Talking about the resistance forces in Gaza particularly, he said that some people offend if Hamas is highlighted just because the United States and Israel are afraid of Hamas. He made it clear that it is a legitimate force as per the charter of the United Nations. The UN charter allows the oppressed people to offer armed resistance if another country or forces barged into their territory and push them out of their homes, he said. He said that the Pakistani nation is united for the cause of Palestine.  The political differences among our political parties would not refrain us from coming up with a joint strategy against Israel. On the occasion, he proposed the government and all political forces to invite the entire Muslim world, their armies and the countries which are outspoken against Israel to a platform. He elaborated that the message delivered by this united forum against Israel would have the power to keep Israel in its limits. JI Sindh chief Muhammad Hussain Mehanti in his address said that the morale of freedom fighters in Gaza, Lebanon and other parts of the region are high. He said that the Muslim world will have to act decisively for Palestine as we all know the intentions of Israel on the international front. Hamas leader Dr Khalid Kadomi also addressed the march through a video link. He said that Israel sprayed more gunpowder on Gaza than the US had dropped on Heroshema and Nagasaqi.

He condemned Israel and urged the Muslim world to get united for the cause of Alaqsa mosque.

Other prominent figures, including PPP leader Nisar Khuhro, MWM’s Allama Baqir Zaidi, and representatives from the Karachi Bar Association, echoed the call for global action and condemned the bombings of religious sites. The rally underscored a collective demand for an end to Israeli aggression and global intervention to stop the ongoing genocide.

Drug-related killings shake French city of Marseille

8 Oct, 2024

Two grisly killings involving teenagers have shaken the French city of Marseille, which has long battled organised crime and drug-related violence.

Last week, a 14-year-old murdered a taxi driver during a botched revenge mission for the brutal killing of a 15-year-old.

Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone has warned that the city's drug lords were recruiting young boys to kill "without any remorse or reflection".

During a press conference on Sunday, Mr Bessone described the "unprecedented savagery" of the 15-year-old's murder linked to a feud between two gangs known as the "DZ Mafia" and the "Blacks".

According to prosecutors, a member of the DZ Mafia, who is currently in prison, hired the boy for €2,000 ($2,192; £1,676) to "intimidate" a competitor by setting fire to his door.

The teenager was spotted and searched by rivals from the Blacks gang, who then stabbed him and set him on fire after finding a gun.

"He was stabbed 50 times and taken to the Fonscolombes housing estate, where he was burned alive," said Mr Bessone. A friend, also aged 15, managed to escape.

The DZ Mafia member in jail then hired a 14-year-old via social media to exact revenge two days later, promising to pay him €50,000 ($55,000; £42,000).

However, the boy shot dead taxi driver Nessim Ramdane, 36, before reaching his target because the driver refused to wait while he carried out his mission, Mr Bessone said.

The prisoner who had hired the teenager then phoned the police to turn him in. The minor was taken into custody and admitted shooting the driver, but insisted that the shot had "gone off accidentally".

Franck Rastoul, a public prosecutor at the Aix-en-Provence court of appeal, has warned of the scourge of drug-related violence, saying that young people were "intoxicated by easy drug money" to the point of "total disregard for human life".

Young people are also often victims of the drug trade.

In 2021, the BBC reported a 14-year-old boy was shot dead by a young man on a scooter outside the Les Marronniers housing estate in northern Marseille. Two other boys - aged 14 and eight - were wounded.

In March this year French police staged a major operation to seize drug money and weapons in Marseille.

Authorities said that within a few weeks, they made 627 arrests, recovered 450kg of cannabis and 19 weapons, as well as €1.6m ($17.5m; £1.3m) in cash.

The two latest murders mean that the number of drug-related killings in Marseille has risen to 17 since the start of 2024.

Author to go on trial in France for downplaying Rwanda genocide

8 Oct, 2024

Grant Ferrett

A French-Cameroonian writer, Charles Onana, is due to go on trial in Paris accused of complicity in contesting the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

About 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed within 100 days.

In a book published five years ago, Mr Onana described the idea that the Hutu government had planned a genocide in Rwanda as "one of the biggest scams" of the last century.

His lawyer, Emmanuel Pire, insists that Mr Onana does not question that genocide took place, or that Tutsis were particularly targeted.

Mr Pire told the AFP news agency that the book in question was "the work of a political scientist based on 10 years of research to understand the mechanisms of the genocide before, during and after".

Rwanda genocide - my return home after 30 years

Rwanda's 100 days of slaughter

Mr Onana, now 60, and his publishing director at Editions du Toucan, Damien Serieyx, were sued four years ago over the same book.

That case was brought by the NGO Survie, and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) for "publicly contesting a crime against humanity".

Monday's trial is only the second case of denying the Rwandan genocide to come to trial in France.

Under French law, it is an offence to deny or "minimise" the fact of any genocide that is officially recognised by France.

Mr Onana's trial will be "historic, since there is not yet any case law strictly speaking related to Rwanda" on questions of Holocaust denial, Camille Lesaffre, campaign manager for Survie, told AFP.

"We will mainly base ourselves on case law related to the Holocaust."

In 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron asked Rwandans to forgive France for its role in the Rwandan genocide.

He said France had not heeded warnings of impending carnage and had for too long "valued silence over examination of the truth", but said his country had not been an accomplice in the killings.

Ukraine strikes oil depot in occupied Crimea

8 Oct, 2024

Ukraine's military says it has carried out a strike on a large oil terminal off the coast of the occupied Crimean Peninsula, the latest in a wave of attacks targeting Russian-controlled energy facilities.

Officials in Kyiv said the country's missile forces launched the strike on the Feodosia terminal - the largest oil processing facility on the peninsula - in an attack overnight.

Russian-installed officials in Crimea have not confirmed the strike, but did acknowledge a fire at the facility. No casualties from the blast have been reported.

A municipal-level emergency has been declared, with 300 people being evacuated from Feodosia due to the blaze, the state-run Tass news agency reported.

Footage circulating on social media appeared to show smoke rising over the Feodosia terminal. Local Russian-installed officials told RIA Novosti that efforts to extinguish the fire were ongoing.

Meanwhile, the defence ministry in Moscow said that 12 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the peninsula overnight out of a total of 21 launched by Kyiv.

In a statement announcing the attack, Ukraine's general staff said that oil products shipped from the terminal were being used to "meet the needs of the Russian occupation army". Russia illegally annexed the peninsula in 2014.

The facility was previously hit in a Ukrainian drone strike in March.

Kyiv has said that its strikes on Russian-energy facilities are fair retaliation for Moscow's strikes on its own energy infrastructure, which have frequently plunged millions into darkness.

At least 80% of Ukraine's thermal power and one third of its hydroelectric power generation has been destroyed in Russian attacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in June.

The Crimea blast comes as officials in Kyiv said the air force shot down 32 drones and two missiles launched towards the Ukrainian capital overnight by Russia.

Air force officials said one Kinzhal missile managed to evade air defences and hit an area around the Starokostiantyniv airfield in the Khmelnytskyi region.

Starokostiantyniv has come under consistent Russian fire over the summer, with Moscow claiming the base houses F-16 fighter jets donated by the West.

Around 65 F-16s have been pledged by Nato countries since US President Joe Biden first authorised willing European allies to send them to Ukraine in August 2023.

The first batch of jets arrived earlier this summer, with fresh deliveries said to have arrived from the Netherlands on Monday.

Elsewhere, in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, officials said 17 people were injured in a Russian airstrike. Regional head Oleksandr Prokudin said a two-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl were among those injured when four bombs were dropped on the city.

Return of fallen dictator will make country unlivable: Rizvi

Oct 7, 202

People will not be able to live in the country if the fallen dictator is rehabilitated, said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today.

"If those who created the culture of enforced disappearances and killings and Ayna Ghar (secret prison) are rehabilitated, then people will not be able to live in this country," he said while talking to reporters in the capital's Elephant Road. He was distributing leaflets to raise awareness on dengue prevention.

"It would be a graveyard of democracy, freedom of speech, and expression forever here," he claimed, asking all to be alert against the ousted dictator.

The BNP leader questioned the appointment of a new foreign secretary, saying the person used to harass BNP supporters and didn't renew their visas considering their political affiliation when he served as the Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar.

"If those who have played an active role in suppressing the opposition by supporting fascists like Sheikh Hasina are placed in important positions today, if they are appointed as secretaries of important ministries like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then this government will face questions," he said.

He said they respect Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, but he needs to look into this matter and uphold the trust of people in him.

BNP's volunteer affairs secretary Mir Sharafat Ali Sapu and its health affairs secretary Dr Rafiqul Islam, were present, among others.

Turkish police arrest four undocumented Afghan refugees

By Fidel Rahmati

October 8, 2024

Turkey has arrested four undocumented Afghan refugees as part of its ongoing crackdown on illegal migrants.

Turkish media reported on Tuesday, October 8 that the four Afghan refugees were arrested in the city of Erzurum and subsequently transferred to a migrant deportation centre.

According to the reports, these refugees were arrested while being transported in a cargo truck from one location to another.

Additionally, Turkish police arrested two individuals in connection with the case, accusing them of human trafficking.

Previously, Turkish authorities had also reported the arrest of Afghan refugees from various parts of the country.

In recent months, Turkey has intensified its operations to deport undocumented refugees. Some Afghan citizens with legal residence permits have also reported police mistreatment.

The deportation and arrest of Afghan refugees in neighboring countries are not new, but recently, the trend has increased, particularly in Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey.

As regional tensions increase and migration policies tighten, Afghan refugees are facing growing challenges in neighboring countries. The intensified crackdown has raised concerns about protecting their rights and well-being.

'No Lesser Evil' Between Harris And Trump: Jill Stein Slams Both Candidates For Losing Arab American And Muslim Votes

October 7, 2024

by Benzinga Neuro,

In a recent statement, Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, declared that neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former President Donald Trump presents a better option in the upcoming election. Stein, speaking in Dearborn, Michigan, underscored the dissatisfaction among Arab Americans and Muslims regarding U.S. policies in Gaza and Lebanon, which she believes could affect Harris’s prospects.

What Happened: Stein noted an increase in her support among these communities in pivotal states like Michigan, Arizona, and Wisconsin. She remarked, “The Democrats have lost the Muslim American and the Arab American vote,” following a rally in Dearborn. Stein’s campaign advocates for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo on Israel, aligning with many voters in these groups.

Despite polls indicating Stein with only 1% support, she believes her impact could influence the election’s result. Stein criticized both major parties, asserting, “There is no lesser evil in this race,” and highlighted that working-class voters feel neglected by the Democrats, Reuters reported on Monday.

Meanwhile, Harris has been enhancing outreach efforts, meeting with Arab American and Muslim leaders, as Trump also targets these voters with new campaign offices.

Why It Matters: The political landscape is shifting as Harris engages with Arab American and Muslim leaders in Michigan, a move reflecting her attempt to regain support from these communities. This demographic was crucial in the Democrats’ 2020 victory but may reconsider their backing due to U.S. policies in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Trump has been vocal in his criticism of Harris and the Democratic Party, particularly targeting Jewish voters at a pro-Israel conference. His remarks, suggesting that voting for Democrats could harm Israel, highlight the intense competition for voter support in the upcoming election.

According to agency data, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported only four migrants to Tajikistan last year

 Oct 07 2024

ALABAMA - A recent report released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security revealed that, compared to previous years, the number of encounters along the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders with individuals on the Terrorist Screening Data Set has seen a drop. As of July 2024, the number of encounters with people on the watchlist at the Mexico border dropped to 139, compared to 216 during the same period in 2023. Similarly, 283 individuals were encountered at the U.S.-Canada border, down from 375 in the previous year.

Amongst the cases related to those on terrorist watchlists there is one involving eight Tajikistan nationals who were arrested back in June. The nationals from the Central Asian country allegedly had ties to the Islamic State terror group. According to U.S. officials, coordinated raids in Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia disrupted a potential terrorist plot that was still in its early stages and was set to be carried out by them.

According to reports from CBS News, the FBI learned of the group's potential ties to the Islamic State soon after the eight Tajikistan nationals crossed into the United States. As the agency identified early-stage terrorist plotting, it triggered their immediate arrests through a wiretap after the individuals had already been vetted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Four months after their arrest, three of the men have already been returned to their home country and Russia, while four others await their removal by immigration court judges. Only one of the men arrested in June still awaits his legal proceeding, following a medical issue, but U.S. officials speaking on the condition of anonymity indicate that he is likely to face a similar outcome to the other seven suspects.

In the past year, Tajik nationals have engaged in terrorism plots in Russia, Iran and Turkey, with several of them arrested after a deadly attack in Moscow that left at least 133 people dead. That attack has been linked to the Islamic State Khorasan Province, a faction of ISIS that emerged in 2015.

As the migrants reaching the Southwest border become more diverse, U.S. agencies are switching up their cooperation strategies to normalize the direct sharing of classified information with U.S. immigration judges. This is aimed at allowing immigration courts to more regularly incorporate derogatory information into their decisions in an attempt to facilitate the sharing of classified materials.

A senior homeland security official told reporters in a briefing on Oct. 2 that border personnel is now encountering "individuals from all parts of the world, to include conflict zones and other areas where individuals may have links or can support ties to extremist or terrorist organizations that we have long-standing concerns about."

Such was the case of an Uzbek man arrested in Baltimore back in May. According to NBC News, ICE reported that the man had alleged ISIS ties after he had been living inside the U.S. for more than two years.

Although the FBI's national terrorist watchlist contains the names of 1.8 million people considered to be potential security threats, the actual percentage of migrants with terrorist ties crossing the border remains low. An NBC News analysis found that the percentage was slightly lower during the Biden administration (0.02%) than during the Trump administration (0.05%).

In fiscal year 2023, which ended in late September, CBP had 736 encounters with migrants on the terrorist watchlist at U.S. borders, the most in the past six years.

Following the rejection, the cemetery association filed a lawsuit, alleging religious discrimination. In addition to the lawsuit, the township passed a zoning change to further block the cemetery.

MPR News

2016 – Court Victory:

In February 2016, a Dakota County judge ruled that the township’s decision was “arbitrary and capricious” and ordered the township to issue a conditional use permit, allowing the cemetery to proceed.

MPR News

2017 – Vandalism Incident:

In August 2017, the cemetery was vandalized with swastikas and messages like “Leave, you R dead” spray-painted on the property. CAIR-MN called for authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime.

MPR News

2021 – Second Vandalism Attack:

In October 2021, the cemetery faced another act of vandalism, compounding concerns of anti-Muslim sentiment. The community came together to address the damage.

MPR News

2022 – Final Approval:

After years of resistance and legal battles, Castle Rock Township granted a conditional use permit in June 2022. This approval allowed the cemetery to include facilities for Ghusl (ritual washing) and prayer rooms, enabling the full observance of Islamic funeral rites.

Russia sentences 72-year-old American to jail on mercenary charges

Laura Gozzi

October 7, 2024

A Russian court has sentenced a 72-year-old American citizen to almost seven years in jail for allegedly fighting as a mercenary for Ukraine.

Prosecutors said Stephen James Hubbard was serving in a defence unit based in the eastern city of Izyum when he was captured by Russian forces in April 2022, shortly after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Hubbard "systematically received material compensation" for his participation in the war on the Ukrainian side, a statement by the Russian Prosecutor General said.

He has now been sentenced to 6 years and 10 months imprisonment in a penal colony.

Hubbard, a native of Michigan, pleaded guilty to the charges last week, according to Russian state media.

However, his sister Patricia Fox told Reuters that Hubbard held pro-Russian views and was unlikely to have taken up arms at his age.

"He is so non-military," Ms Fox told Reuters, adding that her brother "never had a gun, owned a gun, done any of that... He's more of a pacifist."

According to Ms Fox, Hubbard had moved to Ukraine in 2014 and lived there for a time with a woman, surviving off a small pension. He and his partner later split but he continued living in Ukraine.

Although Hubbard was detained by Russian forces in early 2022, his case only became public when his trial began in Moscow in September.

In a video shared by Russian authorities, Hubbard can be seen walking with difficulty inside the defendants' glass box in the courtroom where he was sentenced on Monday.

The eastern Ukrainian city of Izyum where Hubbard was detained was captured by Russia soon after it invaded Ukraine. It was liberated by Ukrainian troops in the autumn of 2022.

In a separate case, on Monday Robert Gilman, an ex-US marine who was already serving time in Russia for an assault conviction, was handed seven years and one month in jail for assaulting a prison officer.

At least 10 US nationals are currently behind bars in Russia. A number of Americans were released in a prisoner swap between Moscow and the West in August.

Israel-Hezbollah fighting intensifies, as memorials mark war anniversary

October 08, 2024

JERUSALEM/BEIRUT: Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel’s third-largest city, Haifa, and Israel looked poised to expand its offensive into Lebanon on Monday, one year after the devastating Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza war.

Israelis held ceremonies and protests to mark the first anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack as the Gaza conflict has spread across the Middle East and raised fears of an all-out regional war.

Iran-backed Hezbollah, an ally in Lebanon of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, said it targeted a military base south of Haifa with “Fadi 1” missiles and launched another strike on Tiberias, 65 km (40 miles) away.

The armed group later said it also targeted areas north of Haifa with missiles. Israel’s military said around 190 projectiles had entered Israeli territory on Monday. There were at least 12 injuries.

Israel’s military said the air force was carrying out extensive bombings of Hezbollah targets in south Lebanon and two Israeli soldiers were killed, taking the Israeli military death toll inside Lebanon to 11.

Lebanon’s health ministry reported dozens of deaths, including 10 firefighters killed in an airstrike on a municipal building in the border area. Around 2,000 Lebanese have been killed since Hezbollah began firing at Israel a year ago in solidarity with Hamas, most of them killed in the past few weeks.

The Israeli military has described its ground operation in Lebanon as “localized, limited and targeted,” but it has steadily increased in scale beginning last week.

Israel’s superpower ally, the United States, believes the Lebanon ground operation continues to be limited, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday.

On Monday, Democratic US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump, who is running against Harris in the Nov. 5 presidential election, all held events to mark the anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israel.

Israeli soldiers have been moving into southern Lebanon. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) says their aim is to clear border areas where Hezbollah fighters have been embedded, with no plans to go deep into Lebanon.

On Monday, Israel within the space of an hour carried out air strikes on 120 targets in southern Lebanon, including against Radwan special forces units, Hezbollah’s missile force and its intelligence directorate.

“This operation follows a series of strikes aimed at degrading Hezbollah’s command, control and firing capabilities, as well as assisting ground forces in achieving their operational goals,” the military said in a statement.

The spiraling conflict has raised concerns that the United States and Iran will be sucked into a wider war in the oil-producing region.

Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on Oct. 1. Israel has said it will retaliate and is weighing its options. Iran’s oil facilities are a possible target.

ROCKETS HIT HAIFA

An Israeli military statement said five rockets were launched toward Haifa, a major Mediterranean port, from Lebanon and interceptors were fired at them.

The statement said 15 other rockets were fired at Tiberias in northern Israel, some of which were shot down. Israeli media said five more rockets hit the area later.

A surface-to-air missile fired at central Israel from Yemen was also intercepted, the military said. The Iran-backed Houthi movement, which controls northern Yemen, has attacked Israel during the past year in what it says is solidarity with Palestinians under attack in Gaza.

Hamas, which triggered the Gaza war with its surprise attack on Israel one year ago, said it targeted Israel’s commercial capital, Tel Aviv, with a missile salvo, setting off sirens.

Many Israelis have regained confidence in their long-vaunted military and intelligence after deadly blows in recent weeks to the command structure of Iran’s proxy force Hezbollah.

“We are changing the security reality in our region, for our children’s sake, for our future, to ensure that what happened on Oct. 7 does not happen again,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting in Jerusalem marking the Gaza war anniversary.

CONFLICT SPREADS

Israeli airstrikes have displaced 1.2 million people in Lebanon, and Israel’s intensified bombing campaign has left many Lebanese worried their country will experience the vast scale of destruction wrought on Gaza by Israel.

Israeli forces issued a warning in Arabic to beachgoers and boat users to avoid a stretch of the Lebanese coast, saying it would soon begin operations against Hezbollah from the sea.

The ceremonies in Israel on Monday included a memorial event for victims of the Nova Music Festival, where militants killed 364 people and kidnapped 44 partygoers and staff on Oct. 7 last year.

In a shock rampage through Israeli towns and kibbutz villages near the Gaza border a year ago, Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli figures.

The huge security lapse led to the single deadliest day for Jews since the Nazi Holocaust.

The Hamas assault unleashed an Israeli offensive on Gaza that has largely flattened the densely populated enclave and killed almost 42,000 people, Palestinian health authorities say.

Marking Oct. 7, Israel vows to fight for hostages, assails UN

October 08, 2024

UNITED NATIONS: Israel hosted an event at the United Nations on Monday to mark one year since a deadly Hamas attack, vowing to fight until all hostages held in Gaza by the Palestinian militants are freed and assailing the world body for failing to condemn the massacre.

“The UN has failed in its most basic mandate to protect the innocent and condemn evil. The resolutions that the UN did pass were about the situation in Gaza,” said Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon, referring to action taken by the 15-member Security Council and the 193-member General Assembly.

During the shock Hamas rampage a year ago some 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli figures. More than 100 hostages remain held in Gaza by Hamas.

Israel’s ally the United States vetoed a draft Security Council resolution on Oct. 18, 2023, that would have condemned Hamas and urged Gaza aid access. The US had argued it needed more time to broker humanitarian access and was disappointed the text did not mention Israel’s right to self-defense.

“There are those in the Security Council, and outside, who fail to condemn Hamas’ atrocities or even say the word Hamas,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Oct. 7 commemorative event on Monday.

“There are those in the region who have sought to build on Hamas’ actions and are now pushing the Middle East to the precipice of a broader war — terrorist groups like the Houthis and Hezbollah,” she said, also accusing Iran of seeking to take advantage of the situation to advance a “destructive agenda.”

The Hamas attack triggered Israel’s retaliation in Gaza, sparking a humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave where authorities say more than 41,000 people have been killed. The conflict has raised fears of all-out regional war, pitting Israel against Iran and the militant groups that it backs.

In recent weeks Israel killed the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and began a ground assault against the Iran-backed militant group. Iran then attacked Israel in a missile strike.

When asked earlier on Monday if Israel had made a decision on how to respond to Iran’s attack, Danon told reporters: “We are debating it. The cabinet met and will continue to meet. We will choose the exact location and the way of the response.”

Amid animosity between Israel’s government and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres — who was barred last week by Israel’s foreign minister from entering the country — UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said he did not believe any UN officials had been invited to Israel’s event at UN headquarters.

In a video released over the weekend to mark the first anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel, Guterres said: “This is a day for the global community to repeat in the loudest voice our utter condemnation of the abhorrent acts of Hamas, including the taking of hostages.”

Hamas armed wing vows ‘long war of attrition’ against Israel

October 07, 2024

DOHA, Qatar: Hamas’s armed wing vowed on Monday, the anniversary of the militant group’s October 7 attack on Israel, to keep fighting what it described as a “long war of attrition.”

“We choose to keep up the fight in a long war of attrition, one that is painful and costly for the enemy,” said Abu Obeida, spokesman of the militant group’s armed wing.

He also warned that scores of people taken hostage into Gaza on October 7 last year were enduring a “very difficult” situation.

He said the “psychological and health condition of the remaining hostages has become very difficult.”

His statement, broadcast on Al Jazeera, came as Israel marked the anniversary of the worst attack in its history.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Militants took 251 people hostage into Gaza, and 97 are still being held in there, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

Sunni Clergy in Iran Voice Strong Support For Anti-Israel‘ Operation True Promise II’

October 7, 2024

The attack was carried out by Iran in response to the assassination of key regional figures, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and senior Iranian Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) commander General Abbas Nilforushan.

The clerics praised the Iranian armed forces for their decisive action, emphasizing the importance of the missile strike in boosting the morale of resistance forces committed to the liberation of Jerusalem (Quds). According to the letter, the operation not only demonstrated Iran’s military capabilities but also reaffirmed the nation's support for the broader struggle against the Zionist Israeli regime.

The military operation, dubbed "Operation True Promise II," took place last Tuesday and saw a reported 90% of Iranian missiles successfully hit their intended targets. The strike was noted as a direct retaliation for Israel's actions, and it underscored Iran’s resolve to respond forcefully to Israel's acts of aggression.

Praising Hamas, West Bank rally celebrates ‘resistance’ on October 7

October 07, 2024

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories: Waving Hamas flags and carrying portraits of slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, hundreds rallied in support of the Palestinian struggle in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah Monday, the first anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel.

About 400 Palestinian protesters of all ages and representing various political factions marched in the de-facto Palestinian capital, which is controlled by long-time Hamas rival the Palestinian Authority, an AFP correspondent reported.

Activists organized the rally on the first anniversary of Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel under the slogan “we will not lose faith in the revolution.”

Beyond the characteristic yellow and green flags of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, protesters also waved the flags of Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen.

Hezbollah, as well as the pro-Iran Islamic Resistance in Iraq and Houthis in Yemen, have sporadically fired rockets and missiles at Israel since the start of the Gaza war.

Demonstrators also chanted “salute from Ramallah to Hezbollah soldiers,” and “put the sword against the sword, we are the men of Mohammed Deif,” in reference to Hamas’s military chief.

Israel says it killed Deif — nicknamed “the cat with nine lives” — in a strike in July, which Hamas denies.

Other participants held up a box shaped like a coffin that bore the words “International Law” and “Arab League” on its sides.

“We came to remember our martyrs, wish recovery for our wounded, and congratulate the resistance (to Israel), whether Palestinian, Lebanese, Iraqi, or Yemeni, for their struggles over the past year,” Jamila Johar told AFP, saying he was “hoping for victory.”

Others praised Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel outright.

“We came to raise our voices and say that the Palestinian struggle continues, and that the 7th of October took us from a phase of humiliation to a phase of dignity and pride,” said a man who spoke on the condition of anonymity for security reasons.

Similarly, Afaf Ghatasha, who identified herself simply as a member of the Palestinian People’s Party, said October 7 “changed the course of the Palestinian cause, the region, and the world.”

“We came to say that the world will not find stability until the occupation ends and a Palestinian state is established,” she added.

The Israeli military has been fighting against Hamas in Gaza since its unprecedented attack on Israel a year ago, resulting in the deaths of 1,206 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Israel’s retaliatory military offensive in Gaza has killed at least 41,909 people, the majority of them civilians, according to figures provided by the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

Yemen's clerks: Aqsa Flood Islam battle in which neutrality forbidden

07 Oct 2024

Yemen's clerks on Monday called on Muslim Uma's clerks, peoples and armies to bring about a new Aqsa Flood, and take a Koranic faithful, honorable stance that takes them from silence to popularity and from separation to unity.

The one-year battle in Gaza and Palestine followed by Lebanon - along with support frons in Yemen, Iraq and Iran - is the battle of fate against the Zionist entity, its American master, unbeliever West and hypocrite Arabs, the clerks union said in a statement.

The battle against the Israeli-American enemy is between right and wrong, griever and wrongdoer, the union added.

It is a religious duty to contribute to the Aqsa Flood, Promised Victory and Sacred Jihad battle in support of jihad and resistance movements in Palestine and Lebanon, the statement read, noting that neutrality in this battle is forbidden and failure is shame.

Imam Khomeini's grandson says Iran must enhance ‘deterrence’

October 7, 2024

The prominent cleric’s remarks come as Israel says it is preparing to respond to Iran’s retaliatory attack that targeted Israeli military bases in the occupied territories earlier this month.

During an interview with Iranian media, Hassan Khomeini clarified his position, stating, "I am neither in politics nor the military; I am simply expressing my personal opinion on enhancing the level of deterrence." When asked for specifics on what kind of deterrence enhancement he envisioned, the cleric responded, "I'll say this much for now."

Hassan Khomeini emphasized the significance of recent Iranian missile strikes on Israel, stating, "The most significant impact of Operation True Promise II was the courage it gave to the Iranian nation. The missile barrage aimed at Israel destroyed its Iron Dome and shattered its deterrence. Deterrence is about power, not about 'smiles.' We must understand that velvet gloves hide iron hands."

He lauded the recent trips by President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to regional countries during the current tense period, calling them "highly commendable."

While acknowledging the dangers of war, Hassan Khomeini stressed the importance of unwavering resolve in the face of aggression. "War is bad under any circumstances and should be avoided," he said, "however, fear of war is worse—an example of this is Shah Sultan Hossein. The whole world should know that when that point is reached, we will stand firm without retreating, even though Iran and Hezbollah have never been warlike. In the matter of Israel, defense is paramount, but if it comes to a confrontation, we must stand firm. In our resistance, we pursue steadfastness, not aggression."

Imam Khomeini’s grandson reiterated Iran's commitment to a Palestinian right to return and self-determination. "We believe that Palestinian refugees should return to their homeland and a referendum should be held so that the government of Palestine can determine its own future," he stated. "This is the legitimate solution of the Islamic Republic of Iran; however, Americans and Israelis propose a two-state solution because they are trying to gain global acceptance for the legitimacy of the Israeli regime. More than 20 years have passed since 2004, yet during this time, the two-state solution has not been pursued."

Time to act: Malaysia calls on international community to unite and take decisive action against Israel

8 Oct 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 Oct — Malaysia calls on the international community to unite, take decisive action, and hold the Zionist regime of Israel accountable for its crimes against the Palestinian people, according to the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

“The time to act has come,” said the ministry in a statement issued to mark the one-year anniversary of the Zionist regime’s atrocities against Palestine.

Malaysia, the ministry stated, reiterated its strong support for the Palestinian people’s struggle for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

“Malaysia will continue to work with like-minded countries to ensure Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations (UN),” it added.

According to the ministry, last October’s tragedy, marking a year since the event, serves as a grim reminder of the relentless violence against the Palestinian people.

Throughout this year, it stated, the Zionist regime of Israel has killed an average of 115 Palestinians each day and injured another 274, most of whom are elderly, women, and innocent children.

“The community is shattered, and the areas in Gaza are now uninhabitable,” it said.

The ministry stated that the world cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the lost lives and the stolen future of the Palestinian people.

The campaign of violence and oppression by the Zionist regime of Israel continues unabated, despite various negotiations, United Nations resolutions, and Advisory Opinions from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), it noted.

“The Zionist regime remains obstinate, committing genocide, expanding illegal settlements, destroying critical infrastructure, and now violating Lebanon’s sovereignty,” said the ministry.

It added that anywhere in the world, violations of international law, international humanitarian law, and human rights — including genocide and war crimes — must not go unpunished.

“Israel has been acting without any consequences. This is unacceptable. Israel can no longer hide behind its history to commit brutal killings against the Palestinian people.”

“All countries must immediately put an end to this brutality,” it emphasised. — Bernama

Selangor to gazette fatwa declaring GISBH’s practices deviant soon; all business chains to close once enforced, says state exco

07 Oct 2024

SHAH ALAM, Oct 7 — The Selangor State Fatwa Committee’s decision to declare the practices and beliefs of GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH) as deviating from true teachings of Islam is expected to be gazetted soon, said state Islamic Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman Mohammad Fahmi Ngah.

He said that the decision would be brought before the State Executive Council Meeting (MMKN) for discussion before it was forwarded to the State Legal Adviser for the gazetting process.

“We will raise this matter at the MMKN, and if all members agree, it will subsequently be submitted to the State Legal Adviser for the gazetting of the fatwa.

“It will then be gazetted as a state government enactment and tabled (as a motion) in the upcoming State Legislative Assembly sitting,” he told reporters when met at the Selangor Innovation Festival 2024 here today.

Last Thursday (October 3), the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, consented to the latest fatwa issued by the Selangor State Fatwa Committee, declaring that the leaders, followers, employees, or members of GISBH and its affiliates have deviated from the true teachings of Islam.

The Selangor Royal Office, in a statement on its Facebook page, announced that the decision was made because GISBH members were believed to still be practising the “Aurad Muhammadiah” or the “Zikir Agung” ritual propagated by the Darul Arqam group which had been declared deviant from the true teachings of Islam according to Gazette No. 54, published on February 4, 1993.

In the meantime, Mohammad Fahmi said all GISBH business chains in Selangor would be closed once the fatwa was enforced, while asserting that this decision would not adversely affect the Malays’ economy, despite claims made by some quarters.

“This group is not the primary driver of the Malays’ economy. I really don’t understand how people can accept their methods of generating income, especially given the issues of torture and child abuse involved.

“Their employees haven’t received their salaries and GISBH has never paid taxes or zakat. We must understand this and the state government will not compromise,” he said. — Bernama

No reprieve: Federal Court stands firm on death sentences for cosmetic billionaire Sosilawati’s killers

08 Oct 2024

By Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — The Federal Court has dismissed the death sentence review application by former lawyer N. Pathmanabhan and a plantation worker, T. Thilaiyalagan, who were sentenced to death for the murder of cosmetic billionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three of her associates.

According to national daily Utusan Malaysia, another applicant, R. Kathavarayan, who initially filed the same review application, withdrew it this morning.

A panel of three judges led by the Chief Justice, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Man, sitting alongside Federal Court Judges Datuk Nordin Hassan and Datuk Abu Bakar Jais, unanimously decided this after hearing the application.

“Exercising our discretion and referring to the facts of the case, we reject this review application, and the death sentence is upheld,” Justice Tengku Maimun was quoted as saying.

All appellants were sentenced to death by the Shah Alam High Court on May 23, 2013, after being found guilty of murdering Sosilawati, 47; bank officer Noorhisham Mohamad, 38; lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32; and Sosilawati’s assistant, Kamaruddin Shamsuddin, 44.

They were found guilty of committing the crime at Lot 2001, Jalan Tanjong Layang, Tanjung Sepat, in Banting between 8:30pm and 9:45pm on August 30, 2010.

Pathmanabhan, Matan, Thilaiyalagan, and Kathavarayan failed in their appeal at the Court of Appeal on December 4, 2015.

On March 16, 2017, the Federal Court upheld the conviction and death sentence against Pathmanabhan, Thilaiyalagan, and Kathavarayan, but acquitted Matan on the grounds that there was no evidence to convict him.

In his ruling, Shah Alam High Court Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir concluded that the motive for Sosilawati’s murder was related to a land transaction.

The three other men accompanying Sosilawati, who were trying to expedite the payment dates for two cheques issued by the law firm, were victims of circumstance, being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

According to Judge Akhtar, based on information provided, particularly by Thilaiyalagan and Kathavarayan, police discovered burn marks at the back of the plantation, and upon digging in the burnt area, they found several bones, some of which were later confirmed by experts to be human remains that had been cremated, indicating they had been burned at extremely high temperatures.

One prosecution witness, a former maid of Pathmanabhan who lived on the plantation, Siti Hamidah, testified that she heard a woman screaming on August 30, 2010, at the plantation and saw flames rising as high as the palm trees.

She stated that further investigation at the plantation uncovered an area with bloodstains and a cricket bat with bloodstains, and chemical analysis showed that some of the blood matched Sosilawati and her friends.

Evidence also indicated that the DNA of bank officer Noorhisham was found on the walls and the cricket bat, while the DNA profile of Kamaruddin Ahmad Kamil was found on pieces of zinc.

The silent gamer: How Xzit Thamer captivated a global audience through silent acting

RAHAF JAMBI

October 07, 2024

RIYADH: In the world of content creation, few have managed to carve out a niche as distinctive as Saudi gamer Xzit Thamer. Known for his innovative approach to silent acting, Thamer has attracted a global following by relying solely on physical comedy and expressive gestures rather than verbal communication.

His ability to connect with audiences across various cultures has set him apart in the crowded gaming landscape.

Xzit Thamer’s journey began in 2019 and his videos gained traction shortly afterwards, garnering millions of views during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. As an introvert, he found solace in creating content while many were confined to their homes.

“When corona hit, I was happy,” he said. “I used this energy to create my content. The boom in my popularity coincided with lockdown, and I focused on being different from typical gamer content creators.” His approach resonated with viewers who were looking for light-hearted entertainment during challenging times.

Thamer describes his style as akin to that of Mr. Bean, the beloved character known for his slapstick humor and minimal dialogue. “I have many followers from the US, UK, Spain and Brazil because I don’t talk,” he said.

“I always wanted to be known globally, and I didn’t want to be like other gamers who only stream. I wanted to be different.” His commitment to silent acting has allowed him to reach a diverse audience, transcending language barriers and cultural differences.

One of Thamer’s primary goals is to increase the percentage of people who play video games. He believes that silent acting can attract those who might not typically engage with gaming content.

Thamer described how he aspires to have an impact across the world with his content. This ambition is evident in his work as he combines visual humor with gaming themes, creating a brand that appeals to both gamers and casual viewers alike.

On social media, Thamer operates under two distinct personas. The first is dedicated to his silent acting, where he uses exaggerated expressions and physical comedy to convey emotions and humor. The second persona focuses on gaming and anime pack openings, where he speaks Arabic and engages with fans in a more traditional format. “Some people don’t know I’m the same person on both channels because my energy is different,” he said, laughing. “Most people didn’t know I was Arab.”

Anime pack opening has become a significant part of Thamer’s content since he ventured into this area in 2022. The activity involves unboxing collectible cards items related to anime. The excitement of revealing rare or valuable cards keeps viewers engaged, turning each video into a thrilling experience. Thamer often opens packs from popular franchises such as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, beloved by fans of all ages.

The interaction during these pack openings is electric. Thamer’s dynamic presence draws in audiences, whether he is revealing a rare card or sharing his enthusiasm for a new collectible. “Kids get really excited when I open the packs,” he said, emphasizing the joy he brings to his viewers. This live interaction has helped him to build a loyal following, as fans eagerly anticipate his next reveal.

Thamer’s approach caught the attention of the esports community, leading to an exciting opportunity at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh. There, he was granted his own activity focused on anime pack openings at Boulevard Riyadh City. This event allowed him to engage with fans in person, further solidifying his reputation as a rising star in the content creation space. “It was an exciting event where I interacted with my audience and opened packs in front of them,” he said. The energy and excitement at the event showcased his ability to connect with fans on a personal level.

As a content creator, Xzit Thamer has embraced the challenges and opportunities that come with his dual personas. Balancing silent acting with traditional gaming commentary requires creativity and adaptability. “I had to learn how to engage my audience in different ways,” he said. His versatility enables him to appeal to a broader audience while staying true to his own style.

The impact of his work extends beyond mere entertainment; Thamer has become a role model for aspiring content creators in Saudi Arabia and beyond. His experience demonstrates that innovation and authenticity can lead to success in the digital world. By combining silent acting with gaming, he has crafted a distinctive identity that resonates with viewers across the world.

Looking ahead, Thamer is focused on expanding his reach and continuing to innovate within his content creation. His ambition to increase the gaming community’s visibility and engagement remains a driving force in his work.

In an increasingly crowded digital landscape, Xzit Thamer has proven that sometimes, less is more. His silent yet expressive approach to content creation captures the essence of universal humor, allowing him to connect with fans around the world. As he continues to grow his brand and explore new avenues within the gaming community, there is no doubt that Xzit Thamer will leave an indelible mark on the world of content creation.

KaisSaied Re-Elected Tunisia President with 90.7 Percent of The Vote

October 07, 2024

TUNIS: Kais Saied has been re-elected president of Tunisia with 90.69 percent of votes cast, electoral authority ISIE said Monday, although low turnout reflected widespread discontent in the cradle of the Arab Spring pro-democracy uprisings.

Three years after Saied made a sweeping power grab, rights groups fear his re-election will entrench his grip on the only democracy to emerge from the 2011 protests.

Saied, 66, won Sunday’s vote by a landslide with 2.4 million votes — but with turnout at only 28.8 percent of nearly 10 million eligible voters.

His imprisoned rival Ayachi Zammel received just 7.3 percent, and third candidate Zouhair Maghzaoui only 1.9 percent, ISIE head Farouk Bouasker said on national television.

Critics said the low turnout reflected widespread disillusionment with the election.

On Sunday, the ISIE said just six percent of voters were aged 18-35, a category constituting a third of the initially eligible electorate.

After longtime dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in 2011, Tunisia prided itself on being the birthplace of the regional revolts against authoritarianism that became known as the Arab Spring.

But the North African country’s path changed dramatically after Saied was elected in 2019 with 73 percent of the vote.

Two years later, he dissolved parliament, and later rewrote the constitution.

Sunday’s turnout was the lowest recorded in a Tunisian presidential after Ben Ali’s ouster. In 2019, 58 percent turned out to vote for Saied as president.

“I didn’t vote yesterday, simply because I no longer have confidence and I am desperate,” said Houcine, 63, giving only one name for fear of retribution.

Political commentator Hatem Nafti, author of a forthcoming book on Saied’s authoritarian rule, said: “The vote’s legitimacy is undoubtedly tainted with candidates who could have overshadowed (Saied) being systematically sidelined.”

On Monday, the European Union said it had “taken note” of criticisms from rights groups “concerning the integrity of the electoral process” and “various measures deemed detrimental to the democratic requirements of credibility” of the vote.

Late Sunday, hundreds of Saied supporters took to the streets of Tunis in celebration after exit polls announced his potential win with 89 percent.

“I voted yesterday, and the results are excellent, everything is going very well, the atmosphere is great,” said Mounir, 65.

“What we need now is a drop in prices. We want better education, health and above all safety.”

Saied had been widely expected to win after the ISIE barred 14 candidates from standing, leaving just Zammel and Maghzaoui as challengers.

Zammel, a little-known liberal businessman, has been behind bars since his bid was approved by the ISIE in September. He faces more than 14 years in prison for allegedly forging endorsements.

Maghzaoui had backed Saied’s power grab, and was seen as no threat.

Rights groups have condemned a democratic backslide in Tunisia in recent years.

According to New York-based Human Rights Watch, more than “170 people are detained in Tunisia on political grounds or for exercising their fundamental rights.”

Other jailed figures include Rached Ghannouchi, head of the Islamist-inspired opposition party Ennahdha, which dominated political life after the revolution.

Also detained is Abir Moussi, head of the Free Destourian Party, which critics accuse of wanting to bring back the regime ousted in 2011.

Saied had called on Tunisians to “vote massively” to usher in what he called an era of “reconstruction.”

He cited “a long war against conspiratorial forces linked to foreign circles,” accusing them of “infiltrating many public services and disrupting hundreds of projects.”

Ben Ali and other Arab leaders often cited foreign conspiracies to justify crackdowns on dissent.

The International Crisis Group think tank has said that while Saied “enjoys significant support among the working classes, he has been criticized for failing to resolve the country’s deep economic crisis.”

Celebrating the exit polls late Sunday, Saied again warned of “foreign interference,” pledging to rid Tunisia “of the corrupt and conspirators.”

Nafti said Saied will use his re-election as carte blanche for further crackdowns.

“He has promised to get rid of traitors and enemies of Tunisia,” Nafti said. “He will harden his rule.”

Immunity Not Recognised in Islam: Pantami Seeks Removal of Immunity for Nigerian Politicians

By Umar Audu

October 7, 2024

A former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali-Pantami, has called for the review of immunity clauses for political office holders in the country.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that at present, Nigerian President and his Vice, Governors and their Deputies enjoy immunity under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.

But speaking during an annual state lecture organised by The Muslims Congress,TMC, on Sunday, Mr Pantami said Islam doesn’t support immunity for leaders.

He noted that abolishing the Act will foster transparency and accountability in governance.

Mr Pantami added that immunity has proven to be problematic for many leaders after leaving office.

“In Islam, there is no immunity. And the immunity may give you a certain privilege while in office.

“When you are no more there, there is no any advantage. Sometimes, it’s good for you, but sometimes it allows you to accumulate so many problems.

“And when you leave office, you will discover after four or eight years someone is being confronted with 10 to 50-count charges, in some situations even 120. So it’s not in any way preventing you from justice, but it’s only delaying and allowing you to commit more and more.

Making reference to prominent Islamic leaders, Mr Pantami said: “Under Islamic rule of law, there is no immunity. Each and every citizen, the leader and the led can be questioned, can be dragged to court, and they must go there and defend themselves.

“It happened with Ali ibn Abi Talib, even as the Khalifa of Muslimun, he was dragged to court. Umar ibn Khatab was also dragged to court. So, rule of law is key. And when it comes to rule of law, there must be equality before that law.”

In his remarks, a former Director of Public Affairs, Voice of Nigeria, VON, AbdusSalam AbdurRazaq, highlighted the contrast between the leadership style of the current set of leaders and that of the Khalifa’s.

He said Muslim leaders in the past didn’t ask their subjects to make sacrifices, while they lived in opulence and enjoyed themselves amidst suffering masses.

“The results of their beliefs in Allah and working their talks include trust in leadership and respect for their persons; rumour was easy to eliminate, leaders worked freely among the people; there was willingness to sacrifice for the Ummah, economy grew, education advanced.

“Romans sent their children to Muslim capitals for learning; and Islam conquered the world and effectively ruled India, Africa, and other parts of the world,” he said.

If Police Won’t Defend Rivers People, We Will Likely Defend Ourselves – Briggs

8 October 2024

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Renowned Rivers-based environmentalist and human rights activist, Ann-Kio Briggs, has condemned the Nigeria Police Force for what she described as “unacceptable” and “dangerous” operations in the oil-rich state.

Briggs expressed her concerns during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday, warning of the potential consequences of the police’s actions in the state.

She took issue with the police’s selective enforcement of court orders, particularly in the aftermath of the recent election of 23 local government chairmen in Rivers State.

Briggs criticized the police for withdrawing officers from local council secretariats, despite Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s warning that some political actors, unhappy with the election results, had plans to instigate violence.

She said, “We’ve been crying out since last October since this political madness started. The witch cried in the night and the child died in the morning and we are looking for the cause of the death? No. We know exactly what is going on.

“We know that the specific local governments that are on fire are the specific local governments that have refused to accept that their tenures have been over three months ago. The specific local governments are the same local governments that their leaders have called the governor all sorts of names since last year.

“We have a police force that for the past three months have had the 23 local government offices of Rivers State under lock and key after the tenure of the local government chairmen had expired.

“And this morning, all of them were ordered to leave the local government areas knowing well that there was going to be trouble, leaving the newly elected local government chairmen in danger.”

Briggs said the people of the state had called on President Bola Tinubu for over a year to intervene, but he chose to stay away.

“Now, that this has transpired, local governments are on fire, and the President is now calling on the governor of Rivers State, and I don’t know who else that is nameless that the President has refused to name, calling on them to make sure that the state is safe.

“The police is supposed to keep the state. This is dangerous and unacceptable to the people of Rivers State,” she added.

I Am Concerned Only My Name Was Mentioned – Fubara ‘Replies’ Tinubu Over Rivers State Crisis

 7 October 2024

By Oladipo Abiola

Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Monday declared that he had no concerns about the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the fresh crisis rocking Rivers State, which has resulted in the destruction of some local government secretariats in the state.

He, however, expressed worries that President Tinubu singled out his name for mention while reacting to the crisis.

The Rivers State Governor was also quick to submit that he is not the cause of the problem in the state.

Naija News recalls violent clashes erupted in some local government areas in Rivers State on Monday following the withdrawal of the officers securing the 23 council secretariats by the police early Monday and attempts by some newly-elected local government chairmen to resume duties.

Some council secretariats were set ablaze by political opponents, while sporadic gunshots were reported in some other locations.

Reacting to the development, President Tinubu, in a statement on Monday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, ordered the police to secure the local government secretariats in the state and also called on Governor Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint.

Reacting to Tinubu’s statement on the crisis, Fubara, who spoke on Monday night during a Channels TV interview, said he is okay with the President’s intervention, but concerned that only his name was mentioned.

Fubara said it doesn’t take rocket science for anyone to know those behind the violence in Rivers State.

He added that the pulling out of the Police allowed hoodlums to take advantage of the situation.

In his words, “I do not have any issue with it (the President’s intervention) but I am a bit concerned when my name was only mentioned.

“The issue is very simple. It’s as simple as ABC, everyone in Nigeria, everyone in Rivers State knows where this issue is coming from. It’s not rocket science. We know what the issue is and the issue is not Fubara, it is not.

“I believe strongly that with the recent intervention of the Inspector General of Police, maybe we will have a breathing space.

“Maybe as a result of him pulling his men out of those secretariats might be one of the reasons they (hoodlums) took advantage of the situation but I will appeal that while the men are there, the elected officers should have the opportunity to do their work, at least, let them provide security for them, which was even what I was thinking of.

“I was never of the opinion that the police should pull out completely. No. When they said they were moving out, it was what allowed these miscreants to take advantage of the secretariats to destroy them.”

Tinubu Condemns Violence In Rivers State, Issues Directive To Police

7 October 2024

By Rachel Okporu Fadoju

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has decried the recent violence in Rivers State following the outcome of Saturday’s Local Government Area elections.

Naija News reports that after the election, Governor Sim Fubara subsequently swore in the newly elected council chairmen of the 23 local government areas of the state on Sunday.

However, after the ceremony, hoodlums on Monday, invaded many Rivers LGA secretariats to cause destruction and prevent newly elected officials from resuming their duties.

Reacting to the development, Tinubu, in a statement on Monday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed concern over the arson and explosion in the state.

President Tinubu urged Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.

He also called on the security operatives in the state to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately.

The statement reads, “President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.

“In response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state.

“He urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions. President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately.

“While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, he emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions.

“President Tinubu said government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism. He stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.

“According to President Tinubu, the judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.”

Jammu and Kashmir Statehood Restoration Plea InSupreme Court

Our Bureau

08.10.24

Two residents of Jammu and Kashmir have moved an application in the Supreme Court seeking the restoration of statehood within two months in the wake of the conduct of the Assembly elections.

The applicants have cited the assurance of solicitor-general Tushar Mehta recorded by a five-judge bench that statehood would be restored once elections were over.

The application has been filed by Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and Khurshaid Ahmad Malik. Bhat is an academic working as a senior political science lecturer in the government education department. He was one of the original writ petitioners who had challenged the abrogation of Article 370 in the Supreme Court. Malik works as a technical senior for the Smart City project.

Both the petitioners have through their lawyer Soayib Qureshi pleaded “that if the status of statehood is not restored to Jammu and Kashmir in a time-bound manner, grave prejudice would be caused to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir also leading to the violation of their fundamental rights and also gravely affecting the democratic structure of Jammu and Kashmir and its territorial integrity".

The applicants recalled that while upholding the Centre's action to abrogate Article 370, the apex court had through its December 11, 2023, judgment only upheld the creation of the Union Territory of Ladakh.

“This hon’ble court did not proceed to consider the issue of whether a state can be extinguished altogether on account of the statement made by the learned solicitor-general wherein it was stated that statehood will be restored to Jammu and Kashmir and that its status as a Union Territory is temporary,” Qureshi said.

Court refuses bail to 3 for assaulting elderly Muslim man over suspicion of carrying beef

By Revu Suresh

Oct 08, 2024

MUMBAI: The Kalyan sessions court on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of three persons booked for thrashing a 72-year-old Muslim man on a train over their suspicion of him carrying beef.

The three accused, Akash Avhad, 30, Nitish Ahire, 30 and Jayesh Mohite, 21, were booked by the Government Railway Police Thane. Initially granted bail by the magistrate court, the GRP subsequently added sections 302 (uttering words with deliberate intent to hurt religious feelings) and 311 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following which their bail was cancelled.

The trio had then moved to the sessions court seeking anticipatory bail. On Friday, the court also rejected the bail plea of Suresh Jadhav, 19, the fourth accused arrested in the case.

Advocate Abid Abbas Sayyed appearing for the victim Haji Ashraf Ali Sayyed, a resident of Chalisgaon in Jalgaon district said, “The police took the matter more seriously after the video went viral on social media and people started talking about it. There are around eight to nine accused in the case out of which the Thane GRP police have identified five individuals.”

He added that the order on the bail plea of the fifth accused Devendra Sonawane would come on October 9. “We are also planning to move a petition before the high court to transfer the investigation to the crime branch”, he added.

The incident occurred on August 28, when the 72-year-old was assaulted, abused and threatened by the mob over the suspicion of carrying beef while travelling in the Dhule-CSMT Express on his way to his daughter’s home in Kalyan.

Videos of the incident, shot by co-passengers, went viral on social media after which the GRP took note of the matter and undertook a search for the elderly man. An assistant police inspector from the Thane GRP eventually found Hussain at his daughter’s home in Bhiwandi and recorded his statement. A case was then registered at the Thane railway police station against the group of men based on his statement.

In the video that went viral, the group of young men, who were on their way for a police recruitment exam, could be seen questioning Hussain about the two containers of meat that he was carrying, after which they could be seen kicking and slapping him. They also allegedly threatened to take him to the police station.

Jammu and Kashmir: BJP leader Sofi Yousuf jumps gun on MLA nominees

Muzaffar Raina

08.10.24

A day before the counting of votes in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP leader Sofi Yousuf has stirred a controversy by announcing the names of five party leaders he claimed have been nominated as MLAs by lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha.

The revelation has heightened tensions, prompting Kashmir leaders to argue that the BJP-led central government is intent on undermining the Assembly elections, the first in a decade.

BJP vice-president Yousuf said his party was running the government at the Centre, which gave it the right to nominate MLAs. “All of them are ours. The central government is ours in Delhi. As the government at the Centre is ours, all the names (of the nominated MLAs) will be from the BJP,” he told a media outlet.

“They include Ashok Koul, state general secretary (organisation); Rajini Sethi, our former president of the Mahila Morcha; Dr Farida Khan, our state secretary; Sunil Sethi, the chairman of the disciplinary committee and chief spokesman; and Rajini Geeta Thakur, our Mahila Morcha president.”

Yousuf claimed the higher authorities had approved the names.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Rainadefended the LG’s authority to nominate MLAs, asserting that it is constitutional and permissible under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. Raina accused the Congress of igniting a propaganda against the nominated MLAs.

“In the Jammu and Kashmir elections, the Congress and other opposing parties are expected to lose. This is why the Congress is creating propaganda and conspiring against the five nominated MLAs who will be elected under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act,” he said.

There is speculation that Sinha plans to nominate five MLAs ahead of government formation in Jammu and Kashmir to give the BJP an edge.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, empowered the lieutenant governor to nominate two women MLAs if the gender was not adequately represented in the House. An amendment last year provided for another three nominated MLAs from the Kashmiri migrantcommunities and displaced people from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Iltija Mufti, media adviser and daughter of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, wrote on X: “All the five MLAs nominated by the LG are BJP members or associated with the party. Brazen pre-result rigging and shameful manipulation. Might as well have nominated all 90 members instead. Why even hold elections? 1987s stolen election took J&K to the brink. Yet no lessons learnt?.”

Former chief minister Farooq Abdullah asked the LG not to back the move.

“When the government is in power, that government has the right to nominate MLAs. The LG has to forward that (accept that) and say yes,” he said.

Have no objections: Farooq Abdullah on taking rival PDP's support for govt formation

07.10.24

Ahead of counting of votes, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday said his party was open to the idea of taking support of Mehbooba Mufti's PDP to form government in the Union territory.

He also flayed the move to give powers to the Lieutenant Governor for nominating members to the five reserved seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, and said his party would approach the Supreme Court if the BJP-led Centre went ahead with it.

Abdullah, while ruling himself out of the race for chief minister's post, said statehood should be restored to Jammu and Kashmir so that the new government has powers to address the people's problems.

"The statehood should be restored, full statehood, where the government has the power to do things. I will not be the CM. Let this one thing be clear. I have done my chief minister's job. My problem will be how we make a strong government and how we fulfil the agenda that we have put before the people," he added.

Asked if the National Conference-Congress alliance will take support from the PDP if need be, Abdullah said "why not?" "How does it matter? If we all work for the same thing, for improvement in the conditions of the people of the state, removing unemployment, removing all the distresses that have occurred in the last 10 years. First thing we should do is restore the freedom of the press. We should have the right to say what is true and what is not true. We can be rivals in elections but I have no objections and I am sure Congress will have no objections," he said.

The NC president said he was not averse to taking support of the independents as well but he would not go begging for it.

"I will not go to beg before them. If they feel they can strengthen the state, most welcome. It should be their initiative. They should want to do good for the people," he added.

The former chief minister also flayed the power given to the LG to nominate members.

"The LG should first of all stay away from this process as a government is being formed. It is for the government to nominate people and send it (nominations) to the LG. That is the normal procedure. What they want to do, I do not know. However, if they do it (give powers to LG), we will go to the Supreme Court. What is the point in making the government, if the Lord Sahib remains here? We have to fight against all this," Abdullah told reporters here.

The five reserved seats are for two women, two Kashmiri migrants and one for refugees from Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The former chief minister said while he does not have a magic wand to know whether the BJP will go ahead with it, they will not succeed in their designs.

"I wish I had a magic wand to know whether they will do it or not. I know what their intentions are but they will not succeed, try as much as they want," he said.

On the exit polls, Abdullah said he is not thrilled by these exercises.

"The exit polls can be wrong, they can be right also. What will really show the truth is when the boxes are opened and votes are counted. We are hopeful that the alliance will form a stable government. That is what we are looking for," he added.

On the expectations of people with the new government, he said the expectations are so high "that only God knows whether the new CM will be able even to sleep".

Abdullah also hit out at the BJP-led Centre for ignoring Jammu.

"I have just come back from Jammu, I have seen the abysmal condition of Jammu. I have seen the bad roads there, they don't have street lights and then they (BJP) think that Jammu is in its pocket. People of Jammu should understand where they have been taken. They used to abuse us that the NC government had discriminated against Jammu. Today, it is their people sitting in Delhi. How did they forget Jammu?" he asked.
