Using ‘crazies’ like Hafiz Saeed will only harm Pakistan: Hussain Haqqani
Jul 27, 2016
Former Pakistani diplomat says his country was always obsessed with the size of the Indian army and resorted to irregular methods to attack India
Pakistan’s “obsession” to match India in military strength and efforts to equalise the field with “crazies” like Hafiz Saeed, would only create hatred which will bite it back, former Pakistan Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani has said.
“My argument as a Pakistani is why do we even want to be equal [with India in terms of military prowess]? Why do not we want to be happier and prosperous and successful,” he said.
‘Obsession with crazies’
“What is this obsession about being equal and trying to equalise the field with crazies like Hafiz Saeed because he will only create hatred, which will only bite us back,” Mr. Haqqani said here on Tuesday night during an interaction on his book India vs Pakistan — Why Can’t We Just Be Friends.
“Pakistan always had this presumption that India has a tremendous conventional military advantage and Indian army will be much bigger than Pakistan’s. So Pakistan needs irregular methods to be able to be equal,” he alleged.
‘Musharraf used LeT against India’
Mr. Haqqani recalled a private conversation of former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf with Pakistani newspaper editors, wherein he said Lashkar-e-Taiba was his reserve core for fighting India and thus established the strong nexus among the Inter-Services Intelligence, terrorists and Pakistani establishment.
“He [Musharraf], in a private meeting with Pakistani newspaper editors, had said ‘Well all of you keep telling me or some of you keep telling me that I should shut down Lashkar-e-Taiba, but it is actually my reserve core in fighting India,’ a fact that establishes a strong nexus among the ISI, terrorists and Pakistani establishment,” Mr. Haqqani said.
The former Pakistani envoy said it was disturbing to know that a head of a country had thought so as these terrorists “would not do good to Pakistan” as the world had seen them attacking Shias, Ahmediyas and Christians in Pakistan, apart from India.
Mr. Haqqani said unfortunately Pakistani strategic thinkers in uniform do not realise this “disturbing line of thinking of patronising terrorists and outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammad and LeT.”
Jihadi movement in Pakistan
Throwing light on the Jihadi movement in Pakistan, the former diplomat said Zia-ul-Haq was not the first man to spread jihadi awareness as is presumed, but it was much before him.
“There is a presumption that Zia-ul-Haq was the first man to start jihadi awareness, but I argue that ‘no, it was even further back’ and there was always a desire for irregular warfare,” he said.
Deny resources to militias
Asked how to shut down the large armed militias, Mr. Haqqani said it was not easy because they were well-trained in warfare. But the establishment can put them out of business if they are denied the resources for their mobility and movement, he said.
“If we make this decision now, it will take some 15 years to put their business out,” Mr. Haqqani added.

ISIL Building Surface-to-Air Missiles Based through Israeli Technology
Jul 27, 2016
Resistance forces in Mosul revealed that the ISIL terrorist group is making surface-to-air missiles based on an Israeli model to target Iraqi, Syrian and coalition fighter jets.
According to the Arabic-language Sputnik news website, the plan includes equipping the ISL missiles with cameras similar to the systems used in Rafael Python-5 missiles produced by Israel which can be fired both from surface and air.
The resistance forces also said that the ISIL group which has been entrusted with implementing the plan includes Iraqi and foreign members headed by Nineveh governor called al-Seidali who have equipped and armed the missiles in a region in Wadi al-Akab in Western Mosul and then fled to Raqqa in Syria.
They added that the ISIL group's activity is not limited to the equipment and enhancement of the missiles; "it also produces the chemical materials used in the bombs and mortars, including poisonous gases like chlorine and mustard gas, which were earlier discovered by the Iraqi and Kurdish forces near Mosul and al-Anbar province.
By implementing the plan, the ISIL seeks to equip the missiles with tracking, tracing and controlling systems which include special electronic circuits and a micro computer chip that receives and processes the information and gives digital orders to the control circuit in the engine impellers through 5-volt micro computer chip.
Based on the information gained by the resistance forces, the ISIL uses Sony cameras to equip its missiles.
The reports came after evidence indicated in July 2014 that Japan’s electronics giant, Sony, had assisted Israel in its deadly offensive against the besieged Gaza Strip.
A piece of an Israeli rocket was discovered in Gaza showing that Sony Corporation has provided the Israel regime with cameras and high-tech control boards to equip its missiles.
A camera apparently manufactured by Sony was mounted on the rocket piece to help Israeli warplanes choose their targets in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas 'summer camp' trains young Gazans for war
Jul 27, 2016
GAZA CITY: As if from nowhere, a dozen young people surge out of a tunnel, Kalashnikov assault rifles in hand, to launch a surprise assault on a military post.
This is the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian enclave that has seen three wars with Israel since 2008, but this time the attack is not real.
The young people, aged between 15 and 20, are taking part in a summer training camp for the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, the Islamist movement which runs Gaza.
Such camps in the enclave of 1.9 million people have been heavily criticised by rights groups concerned with young people's welfare.
It is the first time that Jihad, 16, has entered one of the underground tunnels, which Hamas considers a major strategic asset in its conflict with Israel and which are usually kept well hidden.
The young Palestinian comes from Shejaiya, a Gaza neighbourhood ravaged by war two years ago, and is carrying out a drill to kidnap fake Israeli soldiers.
At the Yarmuk base of the Al-Qassam Brigades east of Gaza City, dozens of young men descend 20 metres from a tower on ropes, as others navigate burning roadblocks.
The base is near the sensitive border between Israel and Gaza, which has been controlled by Hamas for around a decade and is subject to a strict Israeli blockade.
In a week, Al-Qassam says it will train nearly 30,000 young people in basic fighting techniques.
These young recruits to the summer camps are a key part of Hamas's attempts to prepare the population for "the battle of liberation of Palestine", a member of Al-Qassam told AFP.
"Our message to this (young) generation is that the future is yours," he said, his face concealed by a black balaclava. "It is thanks to you that we will be victorious."
Khalil al-Haya, another Hamas official, argued that "there is no choice but the gun".
"The enemy destroyed houses and imposed a blockade hoping that people would turn against us, but the people closed ranks around the resistance and Al-Qassam and send their children to our camps," he added.
Rights activists are deeply concerned by the camp, however.
"We are completely opposed to children's participation in military camps," said Issam Younis, who heads the Gaza-based Al-Mezan Centre for Human Rights.

Iraqi council votes to demolish homes of convicted militants
Jul 27, 2016
An Iraqi provincial council has approved a decision that would allow local authorities to demolish homes of convicted militants and banish their families from the province.
Hassan Fadaam, a Babil Provincial Council member, says the decision will only apply to convicted militants who have exhausted all possibilities of appealing their convictions.
Faddam says a court order also must precede the demolishing of a house. He did not say where a family of an offender would go to, once banished from the province.
The decision, approved Tuesday in the Babil provincial capital of Hillah, is a first in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.
Earlier, some pro-government Sunni tribes have demolished houses of those they accused of cooperating with the Islamic State group after its 2014 blitz.

Turkey is in big danger if US was behind coup attempt: MHP leader
July/27/2016
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli has responded to rumors about alleged U.S. involvement in the July 15 failed coup attempt in Turkey, saying “the problem is serious” if the Pentagon or the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was behind the plot.
“Rumors say that an ISAF commander U.S. general was behind the FETÖ coup attempt,” Bahçeli said, while addressing his party deputies in Ankara on July 26. The ISAF is the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, while FETÖ is an abbreviation used for the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization, which the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) says was behind the July 15 failed coup attempt.

QALANDIYA: Israeli authorities early Tuesday destroyed 11 Palestinian homes in an area on the outskirts of Jerusalem divided from the city by Israel’s separation wall, residents and an NGO said.

Israeli authorities did not respond to requests for information on the demolitions.
Two of the homes are considered part of the occupied West Bank and nine part of annexed east Jerusalem, Israeli NGO Ir Amim said. Two of the east Jerusalem homes were inhabited, it said.

9 Filipinos sentenced to life in prison over 2013 Malaysia incursion
Jul 27, 2016
A Malaysian court sentenced nine Filipinos to life in prison on Tuesday over an armed incursion in 2013 that left scores dead and paralysed a remote corner of Borneo for weeks, a defence lawyer said.
Eight others, including three Malaysians, received prison sentences ranging from 10 to 18 years, said the attorney, N. Sivananthan.
The bloody incursion by some 200 Islamic militants from the southern Philippines was inspired by a self-proclaimed Filipino sultanate’s claims of historical dominion over the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo island.

PM: Children of Felda settlers in Klang Valley proof of social mobility
Jul 27, 2016
PUTRAJAYA, July 27 — The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) has managed to enable social mobility among rural Malaysians as there are over 50,000 children of settlers living in the Klang Valley now, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.
“One of the purposes of Felda is not just to improve rural income and to get rid of poverty, but also to enable social mobility to happen in our communities.
“This social mobility is what is behind the over 50,000 children of settlers to be in the Klang Valley now. There might be even more,” he said during his speech in a meeting with them today.

Democrats break silence on Islamic State from convention stage
Jul 27, 2016
Republicans had many gripes about the first day of the Democratic National Convention, including the fact that not one speaker mentioned the Islamic State from the Philadelphia stage. That changed on Tuesday.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe was the first speaker of the day who mentioned the terrorist group, praising Democrats for selecting Hillary Clinton to lead the party and painting her as the only candidate who can effectively take on ISIS.
"She’s the only candidate with a specific plan to work with our allies and fight ISIS all over the globe," McAuliffe said.

Donald Trump has already damaged US’ national security: Madeline Albright
Jul 27, 2016
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has already damaged US’ national security as he has undermined the fight against ISIS by alienating Muslim partners and weakened America’s standing in the world, former secretary of state Madeline Albright said on Thursday.
Noting that safeguarding freedom and security is not like hosting a TV reality show, Albright, 79, said it demanded not only a cool head, but also a big heart.
“We know what it’s like to step off that plane with the words ‘United States of America’ on it. You know that safeguarding freedom and security isn’t like hosting a reality TV show. It’s a complex, round-the-clock job that demands not only a steady hand and a cool head, but a big heart,” Albright said in her address to the Democratic National Convention.
“You are not just representing yourself, you are there for all of us. Hillary has displayed these qualities in every job she has ever had,” she said, adding that Americans must do everything to make sure that Clinton becomes the next US President.

US Muslims Urged to Engage in Political Process
Jul 27, 2016
Some Muslims claim that participation in U.S. politics is un-Islamic because, according to them, some of the laws in the country contradict Islamic teachings. But the Muslim participants in Philadelphia rejected those claims.
Heed the history
“They should really read the history of Islam. They should reread the Quran and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad,” Nihad Awad, executive director of the U.S.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, told VOA.

Syrian Civil War: John Kerry hopes to work with Russia, UN aims to restart talks between factions
Jul 27, 2016
The United States said on Tuesday it hoped to announce in early August details of planned military cooperation and intelligence sharing with Russia on Syria, and a UN envoy said he would also aim to resume peace talks next month.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington and Moscow, who support opposing sides in Syria’s five-year-old conflict, had made progress in recent days towards working more closely together.
The proposals would have the two powers share intelligence to coordinate air strikes against the al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front and prohibit the Syrian air force from attacking rebel groups labelled as moderate.

America ignores Pakistan at its peril
Jul 27, 2016
Over the July 4 weekend, I made my annual trip to Afghanistan to visit US troops and military commanders. I also travelled to Pakistan to meet civilian and military leaders and to discuss counterterrorism efforts in the region. Two things are clear from that visit.
First, the US mission in Afghanistan is the same today as it was in 2001: to disrupt and defeat terrorist networks that seek to attack its interests and homeland and to deny them safe haven. That mission remains urgent, and it is unfortunately not over yet.
