US Condemns Abuse Video But Taliban Talks Survive
By Mathieu Rabechault
A senior US military official said the Marines believed they had identified the unit at the center of the allegations, which evoked memories of previous abuses committed by US troops in Iraq and during the decade-long Afghan war.
"We cannot release the name of the unit at this time since the incident is being investigated," a spokesman from the Marines said, referring to images that could spark outrage and unrest in Afghanistan and the wider Muslim world.
US cable network CNN quoted an unnamed US Marine official as saying the military branch was "confident" the troops in the inflammatory video were from the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
The unit deployed to Afghanistan, mainly in Helmand province, in early 2011 and returned in September or October, CNN reported.
The video appeared to show four servicemen urinating on three bloodied corpses, and one of the men, apparently aware he was being filmed, saying: "Have a great day, buddy," referring to one of the dead.
US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta pledged that "those found to have engaged in such conduct will be held accountable to the fullest extent," and a Pentagon spokesman confirmed a probe into the alleged abuse was under way.
"This conduct is entirely inappropriate for members of the United States military and does not reflect the standards or values our armed forces are sworn to uphold," Panetta said in a statement.
"I have seen the footage, and I find the behavior depicted in it utterly deplorable. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms."
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters of her "total dismay at the story concerning our Marines," and joined Panetta in condemning "the deplorable behavior that is reflected in this video."
"It is absolutely inconsistent with American values, with the standards of behavior that we expect from our military personnel," Clinton said.
The Taliban, who have made recent moves toward talks to end 10 years of US-led war in the impoverished country, described the apparent abuse as "an inhumane and savage act by the American soldiers in Afghanistan."
But spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said he did not think it would destroy tentative peace negotiations with the United States, "which at this stage are mainly about prisoner exchange".
Earlier in the day, the insurgents issued another statement supporting talks to end the war against US-led forces, while warning that this did not mean surrender.
The Pentagon says it has not yet verified the footage, which has been broadcast by leading Afghan television station Tolo News and posted on the Live Leak website.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in a statement that the government of Afghanistan was "deeply disturbed" at the desecration.
"This act by American soldiers is simply inhuman and condemnable in the strongest possible terms," he said, requesting that the US urgently investigate and "apply the most severe punishment" to anyone found guilty.
On the subject of peace talks, the Taliban, who have announced their readiness to open a political office in Qatar, said they had increased their "political efforts to come to mutual understanding with the world."
"But this understanding does not mean a surrender from jihad and neither is it connected to an acceptance of the constitution of the stooge Kabul administration," the hardline Islamists said in a statement received by AFP.
"But rather the Islamic Emirate (the Taliban) is utilizing its political wing alongside its military presence and jihad in order to realize the national and Islamic aspirations of the nation and its martyrs."
The United States earlier announced that it would send a senior official to meet Karzai next week to see if he will agree to a resumption of preliminary talks with the Taliban. A US official said the talks could open within weeks.
A key Washington demand for any progress in negotiations is that the Taliban accept the Afghan constitution, which mandates protection for the rights of women and minorities, which were stifled during Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001.
Another crucial element would be a renunciation of violence by the Taliban and a break with Al-Qaeda and other "terrorist" groups, the US says.

Militants Kill 14 Pakistani Soldiers
Pakistani officials say at least 14 paramilitary soldiers were killed late Wednesday when suspected Baluch separatists ambushed their vehicle in southwestern Baluchistan province.
The officials said the incident took place in Turbat district near the Iranian border. Baluchistan is home to various militant groups, including pro-Taliban factions, as well as Baluch militants. The province has been in the grip of a regional insurgency for years as separatist militants fight for more autonomy and greater control over natural resources.
The ambush came less than 24 hours after a U.S. drone strike killed four suspected militants in the country's northwest.
Pakistani officials said the missiles hit a compound near Miran Shah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region, late Tuesday. U.S. officials confirmed the attack.
The strike was the first since NATO helicopters operating out of Afghanistan mistakenly killed 24 Pakistani soldiers along the border last November.
That attack worsened already strained U.S.-Pakistan relations and prompted Pakistan to block supply routes for NATO troops in Afghanistan.
American officials have denied that the recent drop-off in drone strikes was deliberate.
But in December, a prominent U.S. newspaper said the Central Intelligence Agency had suspended drone strikes targeting low-ranking militants in Pakistan for six weeks in an effort to mend badly frayed relations with the South Asian nation.
The Los Angeles Times quoted unnamed U.S. officials as saying the CIA's "undeclared halt" in attacks was aimed at reversing a "sharp erosion of trust" between the two countries, following a series of deadly incidents, including the NATO attack in November.
Drone strikes in Pakistan are credited with killing dozens of al-Qaida operatives and hundreds of low-ranking fighters since 2004. But, at the same time, they have infuriated many Pakistanis and complicated relations between Washington and Islamabad.

Pakistan govt in a mess, Army coup fear looms large
New Delhi: Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has called a meeting of his principal staff officers on Thursday after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani sacked the Defence Secretary Lt Gen(retd) Naeem Khalid Lodhi, considered to be close to the military, raising fears of a coup.
The government has also called an urgent meeting of Parliament and may seek a vote of confidence perhaps hoping that given the widespread disillusionment with military rule, President Asif Ali Zardari's government will be able to garner sympathy from the public.
However, Geo News editor Hamid Mir said that a vote of confidence was unlikely. But several analysts say that the firing of Lodhi could be a potentially ominous sign that the festering conflict between the Army and the civilian government had reached a critical stage.
The sacking of Lt Gen Lodhi riled the Army leadership which warned Gilani of serious consequences for remarks against the Army.
"There can be no allegation more serious than what the honourable prime minister has levelled against COAS and DG ISI (Army chief and spy chief) and has unfortunately charged the officers for violation of the constitution of the country. This has very serious ramifications with potentially grievous consequences for the country," said an Army statement.
The "memogate" scandal, which erupted in 2011 over a leaked document reportedly sent by Gilani seeking US help in preventing a coup, has raised tension between generals and politicians to the worst point since the Army restored civilian rule after last seizing power in 1999.
Historically, the defence secretary's post has been filled on the recommendation of military chiefs, who often choose allies, usually retired generals.
"Because this one (Lodhi) is the Army's guy, they may consider this an insult," said Hasan Askari Rizvi, an independent political analyst.
Media reports on Wednesday had claimed that President Zardari was also ready to resign after the Supreme Court warned that action could be taken against him and Gilani for failing to reopen high-profile graft cases. But the reports were denied by Zardari's office.
Hours after he fired the Defence Secretary over an affidavit row with the Army, Gilani on Wednesday said the top defence official had violated the Constitution and had to go.
This has come at a time when Gilani and his government are already on a collision course with the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court called Gilani 'dishonest and dishonourable' on Wednesday.
The Gilani government has also been facing public anger over prices, shortages and corruption.
Adding to the government's woes, the Opposition has stepped in as Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif called for Gilani's resignation.
Pakistan's military warned of "grievous consequences" over its worsening relations with the government. The powerful military has often been at odds with civilian leaders and has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 64-year history as an independent state after repeated coups.
Defence analyst Ikram Sehgal said, "It is his right, constitutional right to sack him. But, I think, the after the observation of the Supreme Court, he should have been more circumspect about the use of his authority because the Supreme Court very clearly said that he is in violation of his oath as Prime Minister."
Meanwhile, as coup fears resurface, the US said that it is monitoring the situation in Pakistan and reiterated its commitment to a civilian-led democracy there.
However, the US has said that it had not sought or received any assurances from the Pakistani Army that it would not stage a coup.
The military, which sets foreign and security policies, drew rare public criticism after US special forces killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil in a raid in May 2011, an act seen by many Pakistanis as a violation of sovereignty.
Pakistanis rallied behind the military after a November 26, 2011 cross-border NATO air attack killed 24 Pakistani soldiers on the frontier with Afghanistan, plunging already troubled ties with Washington to their lowest point in years.
By going on the offensive, civilian leaders risk inviting the wrath of an Army that runs a vast business empire when it is not watching its old rival India or fighting Taliban insurgents.
"This is political adventurism on the part of the government," said Mutahir Ahmed, professor of international relations at the University of Karachi. "Instead of stabilising and strengthening the democratic forces, the present government is following the policy of confrontation."
In another move some analysts described as ominous, the Army replaced the head of a brigade known for its prominent role in coups. The military said it was a routine matter.
"A promotion can always be explained as a routine thing but based on its timing and the way the media has been allowed to pick it up, it is a signal," said Ejaz Haider, executive director of the Jinnah Institute think tank.

Bridging the Religious Divide Between Muslims in Indonesia
Salim Osman - Straits Times
Indonesia, January 12, 2012, An angry mob torched an Islamic boarding school, an adjacent mosque and a row of houses in Sampang, East Java, last Thursday. In February last year, a pesantren, or Islamic boarding school, in Pasuruan, also in East Java, was attacked by a mob for no apparent reason. Four students suffered head injuries.
These incidents were not the first for the two schools. The attacks on these schools, which belong to the minority Shi'ite sect of Islam, raised concern over possible sectarian strife breaking out in Sunni-majority Indonesia, given such conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The attacks placed in a spotlight the Shi'ite minority and its relations with the Sunni majority in Indonesia. Unlike in Malaysia and Singapore, where a Shi'ite minority has always been present, Indonesia's Shi'ites became more prominent only after Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979, when some Sunnis converted to Shi'ism and Indonesian scholars returned from study in Iran. Before the revolution, there were a small number of Shi'ites, mainly Arab descendants who kept a low profile.
But Shi'ism is not a new phenomenon as many Shi'ite elements are found in classical Indonesian literature and even in cultural traditions. One such tradition is commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad's grandson. However, the Shi'ite faith is not embedded in Indonesia's religious beliefs.
The conversion of Sunni activists has raised the Shi'ite community's profile, carving out a space as a well-defined religious group, establishing schools, mosques and civil society organizations, and publishing Shi'ite literature in Bahasa Indonesia.
But with this development comes rising tension with the Sunnis. Since the 1980s, various Sunni groups have been asking the government to ban Shi'ism, but the sect cannot be proscribed because it is still part of Islamic orthodoxy. The sect was formed following a political split after the death of Prophet Muhammad, when the minority who wanted his cousin Ali to succeed him became Shi'ites, while the majority who chose Abu Bakar became Sunnis.

US aided Pakistan group which supported extremists
By CHRIS BRUMMITT, Associated Press – 19 hours ago
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The U.S. gave money to a Pakistani Muslim group that organized anti-Taliban rallies, but which later demonstrated in support of an extremist who killed a leading liberal politician, the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan said Wednesday.
The grant highlights the difficulties facing Washington as it seeks partners to support religious moderation in Pakistan. Last month, The Associated Press reported that the U.S. Embassy had created a counter-extremism unit to perform that mission.
U.S. government website Usaspending.gov shows that the group, the Sunni Ittehad Council, received $36,607 from Washington in 2009.
A U.S. diplomat said that the embassy had given money to the group to organize the rallies, but that it had since changed direction and leadership. He said it was a one-off grant, and wouldn't be repeated. He didn't give his name because he wasn't authorized to speak about the issue on the record.
The grant was first reported by the Council of Foreign Relations on its website.
The Ittehad council was formed in 2009 to counter extremism. It groups politicians and clerics from Pakistan's traditionalist Barelvi Muslim movement, often referred to as theological moderates in the Pakistani context.
The American money was used to organize nationwide rallies against militants and suicide bombings, the embassy official said. The demonstrations received widespread media coverage, and were some of the first against extremism in the country.
The rhetoric at the rallies was mostly focused on opposing militant attacks on shrines, which Barelvis frequent but are opposed by Deobandi Muslims, Pakistan's other main Muslim sect. Deobandis dominate the ranks of the Taliban and other extremists. Some view Barelvis as heretics.

Egyptian Christian Goes on Trial for Insulting Islam
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
A Christian businessman in Egypt will go on trial this week for insulting Islam.
Naguib Sawiris recently posted a picture of a bearded Mickey Mouse and a veiled Minnie on his Twitter account.
Sawiris, a Coptic Christian and a billionaire, has been a champion of secularism and has spoken out against the growing influence of Islamic fundamentalism.
He said he tweeted the picture as a joke, saying that if Islamists came to power in Egypt, even cartoon characters would have to dress conservatively.
Sawiris later apologized, but a Muslim lawyer filed a formal complaint against him.
An Egyptian human rights activist said the country's blasphemy laws have been used to punish scholars and activists who anger Muslims.

Drone strikes resume amid US-Pakistan strains
January 12, 2012
WASHINGTON: The US resumption of drone strikes against militant targets in Pakistan does not signal an improvement in deeply frayed relations between Washington and Islamabad, US officials and experts said on Wednesday.
In the first such attack since November 17, at least four militants were killed by missiles fired from an unmanned US drone at a house on the outskirts of Miranshah in the tribal region of North Waziristan, Pakistani security and intelligence officials said.
Tense US and Pakistani relations worsened after a November 26 incident in which 24 Pakistani troops manning remote border posts were accidentally killed in a misdirected air strike by coalition forces based in Afghanistan.
Current and former US government officials familiar with the drone program said the apparent lull in attacks since the November incident represented no major change in US policy governing drone use.

ASEAN enjoyed good news this week as Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi confirmed her parliamentary bid and her Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim was acquitted of sodomy charges by a Malaysian court.
Observers here have agreed, however, that political reforms in ASEAN will remain sluggish, and the member states have their own “ASEAN way”, which prevents any chance for the region’s own version of the Arab Spring.

Apartheid, Conspiracies & Fanatics Explained
12 January
2012, 08:12
Fanatics in the Veld| The pipe smoking, bible-reading threat on a doorstep near you
This article from my fellow comrade has prompted me to write this particular article.
http://www.news24.com/MyNews24/The-Pope-The-Australians-the-Japanese-all-said-it-so-just-say-it-20120111
Apartheid is always in the spotlight of any political, human rights, and socio-economic discussion in South Africa. And there is always someone blaming and demanding an apology from those who cannot truly apologise for apartheid, even if were to do everything that was demanded of them. Inheritance of guilt and responsibility is a religious concept, much like the failed apartheid regime.
Let me start by dispelling any lingering confusion. Apartheid was not a white invention it was a religious invention! It was done based on the ideology and mindset of a certain group of christian Afrikaners, and I will be detailing that mindset in this article. Perhaps once I have done so, we can start making the reparations we need to move forward together as one nation. I can hope can’t I?
I am an atheist and I will not be blamed / apologise for the actions of self-righteous, religious fools who concocted and implemented a system under the impression that god is on their side and approves of their conduct! I am not an Afrikaner, I am not a boer, I am not a fanatical christian, and I did not implement, support, or perpetuate apartheid in any way, shape, or capacity! I simply share the same colour epidermis (a 10th-of-a-millimeter similarity) with those who supported and continue to long for apartheid. I feel that I should be given an apology for being associated with something sinister, based purely on the deductions of an errant pattern recognition system, which still dominates the mental convulsions of many homo sapiens on this planet.
I, thus, cannot apologise sir—at least not in the real sense of what constitutes a sincere and warranted apology—for what some bible reading fanatic christians did in the past and in the name of religion. It is high time that everyone in South Africa understand that a white skin, does not an apartheid supporter make! We must divorce ourselves of the ideology that colour and certain mentalities are intertwined, as it is the only way we can become a unified nation and finally be set free from the legacy of apartheid.
We must stop saying that violence, corruption, and incompetence are BLACK conditions, and we must stop saying that discrimination, elitism, and apartheid are a WHITE conditions. We have to address people who have errant mindsets, based on those mindsets, and not the colour of their skin! So, to those individuals in South Africa who still think with their epidermis, get over your petty, skin-deep differences and target the destructive mindsets that result not from skin colour, but improper intellectual and emotional development.
I will do something more productive with this article than simply give an unwarranted apology. I will point out who the ones are that should be made to apologise! I will address the very mindset that instigated and still keeps apartheid on life support. I find it disturbing how the media and so many people in South Africa were up in arms about the things Malema said, yet nobody dared look at the khaki rightwing threat that is even more widespread and more sinister—albeit much more cowardly and sneaky.
Disclaimer
I want to add a disclaimer of sorts. I do not address this article to the general white or general Afrikaner/boer or even the general christians in South Africa. My comments, questions, and cynical remarks are PURELY meant for those who subscribe to the character profile and radical mindset I’ll be dissecting in this article. I will specifically be targeting the homegrown rightwing christian fanatics, The very flock that invented, implemented, and still long for the return of the oppressive religious regime known as apartheid.
Those who sow the seeds of division
In South Africa, we are cursed with two equally lugubrious political factions: the lethargic left and the reactionary right (reactionary in the backward-thinking sense of the word). With a very large and vocal group already taking to task the lethargic left, I will now focus on the very root of South Africa’s troubled past and a major source of continued racial divisions. I am, of course, referring to the religious Israel-vision christian fanatics in South Africa. The ones that are gearing up, right now, to blow all of South Africa to kingdome come to prove their faith to themselves and their god.
This homegrown terrorism, of course, owes its origin and longevity to the fanaticism that grips the inane mind of thoughtless believers. The same sort of minds that are to blame for apartheid.Yes, those very fools who used biblical interpretation and the chosen few mentality as the groundwork for the Apartheid regime. The legacy of which has left the NOW generation of white South Africans with a burden that they should never have had! It thus bothers me how young whites can still believe the nonsense their fanatic grandparents tell them around a campfire and claim that apartheid was a good thing and that South Africa as a whole was better off under its rule.
Young people who now go on and perpetuate the belief that if someone does not have a circular pattern in the hair at the top of their heads, then they are animals and deserve to be treated even worse than animals. And they believe it why? Because my uncle, dad, grandpa, aunt, etc. hammered me with a bible over the head and told me it is so.
I’m addressing you suicidal rightwing puppets who cannot wait for the proverbial coprolite to hit the fan in South Africa because then, finally, you and our foolish elders will be proven right. Finally, you can then call South Africa a failed state, and rise up and murder your fellow South Africans as you attempt to drive them out from your promised land. Your doom prophets and self-serving leaders have been preparing you for this TRUE purpose—have they not? And many know exactly what I am talking about.
Before someone asks me how I know this, I used to personally know some of their members back when I was in South Africa. The sad thing is, too many people simply do not talk about rightwing groups or even consider what their crackpot ideas actually entail. For too many Afrikaners the idea of lambasting a group so closely related to them is simply too uncomfortable. I will do what they cannot though.
The mentality of Israel-vision extremists in South Africa
These Israel-vision death cults rely on a particular interpretation of the bible (yes that antiquated vestige of antiquated human thought) and claim that its scripture mentions a cursed race that is condemned to servitude as long as they walk the earth (called `n waterdraer in Afrikaans). This unclean animal (onrein dier), as these fanatics like to call them, is then interpreted to refer to black people—not some, not the bad ones, but all of them! Sadly, these religious racists do not hold other non-white races in favourable view either.
The primary groups that subscribe to this particular religious sect and eschatological christian doom propheteering (and even profiteering) are some of the rightwing afrikaner groups that are obsessed with biblical interpretation, Siener van Rensburg prophesies, and the formation of a breakaway boer/afrikaner state. It is for the things they aim to do in the world of the living that I have decided to draw attention to them. The fact that they believe they are the only ones who are worthy of heaven, or the only people god loves means nothing to me. However, when they push their agenda’s into the material world where it affects others—they should encounter unrelenting resistance and ridicule.
The major rightwing groups also strongly believe that boere/Afrikaners are a splinter group of the Israelites and, as such are part of god’s chosen few (die uitverkorenes). We all know, the god of the bible loves all of humankind equally, save for the somewhat sickish obsession he has with and favouritism he shows towards one group in particular—the Israelites. The outlook on life of these elitist people can be summed up with an old Jehova’s witness rhyme, “We are the pure and chosen few, and all the rest are damned. There’s room enough in hell for you—we don’t want heaven crammed”!
Right-wingers provide some comedic relief to South Africa at least. They make the news once or twice a year as another one of their masterfully crafted terrorist attacks—which is meant to be the catalyst of their liberation—ends in the arrest of a few sun-dried Afrikaner youths. After discovering their base, they are exposed for their primitive methodologies. It is painfully evident by their caches of spiked clubs, chlorine bombs, and other homemade weapons that pose more danger to the user than any intended target. Their troops are also incessantly training and preparing for the coming war out on some backwater farms. For every three that get arrested in another grand rightwing f**k*p (let us rather be glad they, so far, always are that), ten others are still sitting in some underground bunker and hoarding more guns, more knobkerries, more ammunition, and more MAGGIE 2 MINUTE NOODLES!
To those rightwing xenophobes out there who constantly scream for South Africa to cut ties with China, where will your ilk get their noodle stockpiles from then? Then again, righwingers are well-known for their self-imposed economic, social, and political isolation.
Wolves in sheep’s clothing
Let me also point out another ideological institute, which many support with the same blind faith as they do the bible. Afriform gives me a very uneasy feeling. Watching how they conduct themselves, I get the impression that they have become the suit-and-tie spokespeople for these rightwing groups and their fanatical followers. Notice how they are always talking about the people, freedom, and rights as long as it is THEIR people, THEIR freedom, and THEIR rights. It is no wonder they get laughed at by everyone except those loyal to the illusion of the great and terrible Afrikaner struggle. As an English South African, I can assure you that they do not have my support, or the support of many of my peers either and they never will as long as they play the victim role and pretend to be special and above the rest of us in South Africa.
What they evidently want is special privilege, special treatment, special protection, and later on the most fertile and arable land in the country, so they can finally build their little boer/Afrikaner state and surround it with electrified fences and signs that read F**K THE REST OF YOU! This is a near-perfect illustration of why long-term exposure to the bible and primitive ideologies are to be discouraged!
The misleading tactics used by rightwing groups
The rightwing groups responsible for these white genocide hoaxes, which do the rounds every now and again, use an inanely skewed interpretation of crime statistics in South Africa to provide proof that it is already happening. There is enough murder and violent crime in South Africa to make even the most narrowed down interpretations look credible by sheer numbers alone. They deliberately ignore national crime statistics and reports that show crime affects everyone in South Africa. Every race, tribe, colour, and creed is affected, yet the fanatics insist on making their own documentaries, reports, investigations, and even false evidence to continue to promote a shocking ideology to their intellectually lethargic people.

More information: Bahrain: Vicious Attack on Human Rights defender Nabeel Rajab
Islam Times - "I said it was up to him and that he should not use violence, but if he does, the marchers wouldn't react because violence wasn't the solution" said Nabeel Rajan in an interview.

The officer gave them five minutes to disperse. In fact, the attack began 90 seconds later.
Riot police started beating people with batons. Tear gas canisters started flying all over the place, spewing what many protesters have started to call "toxic gas", because the new gas being used by security forces has effects far stronger than that employed earlier in the protest. Rajab saw some canisters; none had any company names or other labels.

GMD is a day given to remember man's inhumanity to man in the perpetration of genocides and genocidal acts. Its foundation is based on the argument by various thinkers that several genocides underpin the modern era. Such genocides include the genocide of slavery, the near eradication of Native Americans, the extermination of populations in the Congo and India, the Nazi Holocaust as well as more recent genocides and genocidal acts including that of the Palestinians, Bosnians, Central American peoples and the Chechens to name but a few.

Western Imperialism and the Unspoken Tyranny of Colonization
by Dr. Mahboob A. Khawaja
Arnold Toynbee (A Study of History) clarified the European paradoxes of history that when political, moral and intellectual values come close to stagnation, “warriors become dreamers” to overrun the world. European colonization of the racially inferior herds was a planned scheme of things not an accidental history - an obsessive political belief that Europeans were superior in their intellect, ethnicity, race, color and human configuration than the other people of the globe.

Christmas is no time for an Iranian Revolution
By Hooman Majd
It was Christmastime in Tehran, and forecasters were predicting another early snow. On a cold day last December at the bazaar in Tajrish, the wealthy historic neighborhood in northern Tehran, shoppers avoided the exposed alleyway stalls and instead headed for the warmth of the nearby mini-malls, which were as overheated as any in the United States.
Inside one, kids gathered around the window of a Christmas shop to gaze at the ornaments and plastic Santas inside. A few other shops also had Christmas decorations - perfectly legal in the Islamic Republic, even if the religious authorities frown on them. Christians are free to celebrate as they wish - there are even Christmas trees for sale on the sidewalks in the Armenian neighborhoods of Tehran.

Hasan Ali – Islam or the Malay race?
January 12, 2012
FMT LETTER
From Lim Hwah Beng, via e-mail
Hasan Ali indicated that he did not understand why PAS had decided to sack him as all along he has been ‘championing Islam’. This is what I want to say to Hasan Ali. With someone like you championing Islam, people, particularly non-Muslims, will not only shy away from but think very negatively of or about Islam. You are concerned only about people leaving Islam. Why are you not anxious about bringing people to embrace Islam?
It is time you take a rest and think whether what you have done has done Islam or your God any good. I believe your God wants Muslim leaders like you to spread the religion and convince as many people as possible to see the beauty and truth of your religion and to bring more and more to your God. Have you done that? Have you instead been chasing people away from Islam?

Libya gets more time for Gaddafi son questions
Wednesday
January 11, 2012
The International Criminal Court (ICC) said on Tuesday it would give Libya more time to say whether Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the most prominent son of the country's former leader, will be surrendered to face trial for war crimes.
The Hague-based global court has issued an arrest warrant for Saif al-Islam, after prosecutors accused him and others of involvement in the killing of protesters during the revolt that eventually toppled his father, Muammar Gaddafi, in August.
But when militia fighters captured Saif al-Islam in November, Libya said it wanted to try him at home.

Another Islamophobic rant from UKIP Candidate
Over at the Mail's Right Minds blog there is yet another raving anti-Muslim post from former UKIP candidate Abhijit Pandya. David Cameron is denounced for "failing to act" on his notorious Munich speech last year denouncing multiculturalism. This has supposedly resulted in a failure to resist forced marriages, honour killings and, in particular, Sharia courts.
According to Pandya, "women are not allowed to speak" at Sharia tribunals, which is a new one on me. It would certainly come as a surprise to Amra Bone. Needless to say, the parallel role of Beth Din in the Jewish community doesn't even rate a mention. Apparently it's only Muslims' religious tribunals ("these monstrous courts") that pose a threat to social cohesion.
At the end of the piece we are asked to: "Note also the group 'One Law for all' in the UK which is fighting against Sharia Courts." Maryam Namazie will be so pleased.
