UN Head Calls On World Leaders To Condemn 'Antisemitism,
Anti-Muslim Bigotry'
UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres
-----
October 14, 2023
by Jenny Goldsberry
The United Nations Secretary-General issued a
statement Saturday to condemn "bigotry" against Muslim and Jewish
people in hopes world leaders will follow.
Antonio Guterres posted a video statement to X,
formerly known as Twitter, regarding the Israel and Hamas conflict, which has
split heads of state globally. Immediately following Hamas firing missiles into
Israel, the leaders of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Ukraine, India,
and the United States declared their support for Israel. Meanwhile, Qatar and
Saudi Arabia's heads of state promised support to Palestine.
“I call on all leaders to speak out against
antisemitism, anti-Muslim bigotry, and hate speech of all kinds,” Guterres
said. “This is a time for the international community to come together around
protecting civilians and finding a lasting solution to this unending cycle of
death and destruction.”
Countries like the U.K., France, and the U.S. have
witnessed protests defending both Israel and Palestine. Hateful chants have
been captured on various videos throughout social media. As a result, France
has banned pro-Palestine protests in light of antisemitic sentiments shared in
previous demonstrations. London Metropolitan Police likewise reported 105
antisemitic incidents and 75 antisemitic offenses, an uptick that was almost 10
times greater than the year before
"There's been a quite frankly disgusting rise in
antisemitic incidents over the past few days; that's not right," Prime
Minister Rishi Sunak told reporters Friday. "We will absolutely not
tolerate people inciting hatred or violence or racist activity."
Within the halls of Congress, tensions have risen.
Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX) claimed a sign posted outside his Washington office
declaring his support of Israel was stolen Thursday. According to Williams, the
sign, which depicted the Israeli flag and read: "I stand with
Israel," disappeared sometime Wednesday night. He first posted a photo of
the sign outside of his office in the Capitol earlier that day to X, formerly
known as Twitter.
Rep. Rashida Talib (D-MI) has a Palestinian flag
displayed outside her office. She now faces a censure resolution and an
appropriation amendment declaring that funds will not be used on any foreign
flags for display.
This most recent violence arose after Hamas fired
thousands of rockets and also sent dozens of fighters into Israel a week ago.
In light of the conflict between Hamas and Israel, some 2,900 have died, among
them 27 American citizens. There are also more likely to be among the 150 taken
hostage.
Israel last received rocket fire in January, when the
Islamic Jihad in Gaza fired two rockets toward Israel after a raid refugee camp
by Israeli troops resulted in seven Palestinian gunmen and two civilians
killed. These two rockets caused no casualties. Israel responded with air
strikes on Gaza at the time.

Bareilly Cleric, President Of All India Muslim Jamaat, Linked With Aala Hazrat Dargah, Asks People To Pray For Palestinians In Gaza

October 15, 2023
Bareilly : Bareilly-based cleric Maulana Shahabuddin
Razvi, who is the President of All India Muslim Jamaat, an organisation linked
with Aala Hazrat Dargah, has urged “everyone to pray for the Palestinians in
Gaza as they are being continuously bombarded by Israel during its war with
Hamas”.
Razvi added that the culture and the teachings of
Islam are based on peace and teaches how to respect one another as human
beings, there is no place for violence and killings of civilians by anyone.
“Any mistreatment of women, children and the elderly
is strictly prohibited and condemned by Islam,” he said.
The cleric advised the people to maintain calm and
peace, and also appealed to the United Nations, the Indian government and
global players to act and intervene actively and immediately to halt the
hostilities.
“Relations between people of India and Palestine have
always been very deep, close and respectful. In fact, it is a well-known fact
that late president Yasser Arafat was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi,” Razvi
added. — IANS

Rohingya Face ‘Second Genocide’ As Violence Surges In Bangladesh
Refugee Camps
Rohingya Face ‘Second
Genocide’ As Violence Surges In Bangladesh Refugee Camps
------
Amy Sood
15 Oct, 2023
“At first, we only heard the gunfire at night. But
now, I have seen someone get shot in the daytime right in front of my eyes,”
said Fatimah, a 24-year-old Rohingya refugee living with her parents in Cox’s
Bazar, Bangladesh.
“We cannot escape this situation. And nobody is
protecting us from these dangers,” she added, requesting to go only by her
first name for fear of reprisals.
The massive camps in Bangladesh, which house almost a
million Rohingyas, have seen escalating gang violence, resulting in the deaths
of at least 55 people as of August.
The ongoing violence – both by state and non-state
actors – exacerbates the plight of the Rohingya, a stateless Muslim minority
who largely fled Myanmar in 2017 to escape a military crackdown, described by
the US State Department as a “genocide”.
Bangladesh took them in, in huge numbers, but they are
now seen as a burden – unable to live and work freely outside their temporary
homes in the camps, where they live in squalid conditions, worsened by
supercharged climate events such as typhoons.
“We are fully exposed to gangs who are fighting with
arms in the congested camps,” he said. “A lot of innocent people, including
children and elderly people, are dying in the crossfire.”
His elder brother was taken by a group last month,
beaten bloody for two days and left with bruises and cigarette burns on his
body, Khan said, adding that his own online activism has made his family a
frequent target of the gangs.
In September 2021, MohibUllah, a well-known Rohingya
community leader, was gunned down while speaking at a refugee gathering. His
family accused ARSA of his death, and activists say they have seen an uptick in
violence, abductions, and killings since then. Bangladesh said in January it had
deployed more than 2,000 APBn officers to improve security in the refugee
camps.
“The main problem in the camps now is the lawlessness
and insecurity being caused by these different factions of Rohingya armed
groups who are fighting for supremacy,” said Chris Lewa of the Arakan Project,
which provides support to Rohingya refugees.
These restrictions range from physical barriers such
as barbed wire fences constructed around camps and strict curfews to the use of
force, harassment and extortion to curb movement. The study reported
restrictions on the use of smartphones or laptops.
The report was based on 241 surveys and 54 in-depth
interviews with refugee respondents from 30 camps in Cox’s Bazar district, and
included four interviews with police officers that corroborated the survey
results.
Sixty-five per cent of the respondents said they
believed the restrictions on movement they faced in Bangladesh were worse than
what they had experienced in Myanmar.
Women are especially at risk of becoming victims of
abuse and trafficking due to the lax security in the camps, according to
researcher Andrew Riley, who spoke on behalf of Youth Congress Rohingya
representatives as they did not want to be identified out of fear of government
reprisals.
The extreme restrictions that are imposed by the
police tasked with guarding the camps, coupled with the violence many refugees
now face from armed gangs, have left the Rohingya completely helpless,
according to John Quinley III, director of international rights group Fortify Rights,
which focuses on Myanmar in particular.
“You have a situation where there are dangers from
non-state actors but also a state authority that is repressing refugees, so the
Rohingya have very little hope in their ability to access any kind of protection
or justice,” he said.
Ever year, thousands of Rohingya risk their lives
trying to escape the camp’s dire conditions, travelling in rickety boats in the
vain hope of reaching safe harbour in Malaysia or Indonesia. Scores have died
en route.
Riley, speaking on behalf of Youth Congress Rohingya,
said it might be possible get some accountability from Bangladesh on this
matter if humanitarian agencies – and the United Nations’ refugee agency in
particular – stated their limitations in protecting refugees.
“Not stating that limitation gives Bangladesh a
rationale to say that the needs of these refugees are being met in the camps,
and we can keep them locked in there,” he said.

Traders’ Body of Karnataka Urges to Lift Ban on Muslim
Vendors in Temple Fairs for Dussehra Festival
The Wire Staff
15-10-2023
New Delhi: A traders’ association in coastal Karnataka
has urged district authorities to allow Muslim vendors to participate in temple
fairs during the upcoming festive season of Dasara.
Last year, many shrines had banned Muslim vendors from
these fairs at the behest of Sangh Parivar groups. The Dakshina Kannada and
Udupi Districts Religious Fair Businessmen’s Coordination Committee, which
includes members from various religious backgrounds, is making this appeal, the
Telegraph reported.
The committee has complained that Muslim vendors have
been banned even from the government-run Mangaladevi Temple in Mangalore,
Dakshina Kannada.
It added that several shrines had banned Muslims from
bidding for stalls even in public spaces near the temples ahead of religious
festivals in summer last year and later during Dasara.

"We Must Protect One Another": Jews And
Muslims Uniting For Peace In Manchester
By Paul Britton
15 OCT 2023
Each from different faiths, they look to elevate the
things that unite us above the forces that would divide us. And now, with the
outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, the work of Greater Manchester's interfaith
leaders has never been more relevant.
Jewish and Muslim leaders alike, they've spoken out
passionately to communities, through the Manchester Evening News, as the
conflict and loss of life in the Middle East continues.
As people dedicated to peace, they have urged
residents across the city region, thousands of miles away from Israel, to keep
talking to each other - stressing that Manchester is greater because those of
different religious, political and emotional persuasions all share their lives
here together.
Collectively, they have urged people to be there for
each other and continue to support one another, preaching the importance of
dialogue, respect and mutual empathy.
Rabbi Warren Elf MBE, a father-of-five from north
Manchester, is co-chair of Faith Network for Manchester. The forum runs
projects, conferences and workshops to bring those of different faiths together
- and combat common misunderstandings between them - to foster greater cohesion
and harmony among all who live here.

Algeria: 16 Islamists Jailed for ‘Seeking Regime

15 October 2023
Asharq Al Awsat
Algerian activists and lawyers said 16 members of the
banned Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) have been remanded in custody after an
investigating judge charged them with terrorism and attempts to overthrow the
government by unconstitutional means.
Earlier this month, several FIS members were detained
after they issued a statement criticizing a “political deadlock” in Algeria,
which security forces said was a “threat” to the country.
The FIS members were then subject to a security
investigation. The judge who questioned them ordered their detention pending
investigation. At the start of the campaign, four FIS members were detained but
the arrests ended with 16 members.

France raises alert level to highest after teacher
killed in Islamist attack
Oct 14, 2023
A 20-year-old man fatally stabbed a teacher and
gravely wounded two other people in an attack at a school in the northern
France city of Arras on Friday (13 October) that President Emmanuel Macron
condemned as “barbaric Islamic terrorism.”
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said France was now
on its highest state of alert and that the Arras attack bore a link to events
in the Middle East, where Israel is conducting a military offensive to root out
Hamas fighters after their deadly rampage.
Visiting the site of the attack, Macron paid his
respects to the dead teacher, Dominique Bernard, whose body still lay under a
cover surrounded by a pool of blood.
“(He) stepped in and undoubtedly saved a lot of lives
himself,” Macron said. “Our choice is made not to give in to terror, not to let
anything divide us.”

Hamas-Israel war: Surge in hate crimes against Jews,
Muslims in London; Rishi Sunak calls it ‘disgusting’
15 Oct 2023
By SounakMukhopadhyay
London has witnessed an escalation in antisemitic
incidents amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Data from the Metropolitan Police
reveals that antisemitic incidents surged from 14 to 105, and offences from 12
to 75, between September 30 and October 13, compared to the same period last
year.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the trend
“disgusting" and weighed in on the issue during his visit to Sweden. He
conveyed that adequate funds had been allocated for fortifying Jewish
establishments, emphasising that the UK would not tolerate any form of
intimidation or threats against its Jewish communities, the BBC reported. He
informed that high-level meetings were in progress to ensure safety measures
were robust.
The Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Met Police,
Laurence Taylor, revealed that instances of Islamophobia had also gone up,
though not as substantially as antisemitic incidents. He described incidents
that included intimidation outside synagogues and inappropriate playing of
German military music.

Maryland Muslim leaders say ‘innocent lives deserve to
be protected’ in Gaza
Penelope Blackwell
10/14/2023
As a teen who lived under Israel’s military occupation
during his formative years, Aref Ramadan described his move from Gaza to
Maryland in 1983 as lonely yet necessary.
Four decades later, the tensions between Israel and
Palestinians have boiled over after gunmen from Hamas, the militant group that
governs Gaza but that many countries consider a terrorist organization,
massacred 1,300 people in southern Israel last weekend. The victims ranged from
military personnel to concert-goers and families in their cars and homes.
Israel has responded with airstrikes on the sealed-off
Gaza Strip, and Ramadan said that at least 20 members of his family are among
the roughly 1,800 Palestinians that the Palestinian Health Ministry says had
been killed as of Friday. Israel has ordered 1.1 million people to evacuate to
the southern part of the narrow seaside strip. And Ramadan, one of 16 siblings,
said the weeklong war has left his family scattered across its largest refugee
camp, the Jabalia camp.
“There is no safety in Gaza. I feel defenseless
knowing something might happen and I have no power to stop it — there is
nothing I can do to help,” said Ramadan, a founder of the Palestinian Community
of Metro DC.

How does Iran fit into the war between Israel and
Hamas?
By Ellen Ioanes
Oct 14, 2023
Speculation around Iran’s involvement in Hamas’s
gruesome attack on Israel has been rampant over the past week — along with
questions about whether the Islamic Republic or any of its regional proxies
will get involved in the war between Israel and Hamas.
Iran has denied involvement in planning the attack,
but the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei praised the slaughter
in a televised address Tuesday. “We kiss the hands of those who planned the
attack on the Zionist regime,” Khamenei said. “The Zionist regime’s own actions
are to blame for this disaster.” Hamas, for its part, has claimed sole
responsibility for the attack on October 7, in which militants killed an
estimated 1,200 Israelis, mainly civilians, injured upward of 3,000, and took
as many as 150 hostages.
Though Iran and Israel have been in conflict since the
1979 Iranian revolution, there has never been outright war between the two.
However, Iran does support proxies in the region, including Hezbollah, the Shia
militant group in southern Lebanon, which could opt to join the conflict,
though thus far it’s not clear that the group has made any concrete moves in
that direction. (Rockets were fired from southern Lebanon this week toward what
is now northern Israel, though it’s not clear at this point whether they were
launched by Hezbollah or another group.)
Iran does provide material support to Hamas as well as
training and money, experts told Vox, as does Hezbollah. Proxy groups — armed
groups affiliated with a state actor — like the Fatemiyoun Brigade in Syria and
the Badr Organization in Iraq, as well as the Houthis in Yemen, work more in
concert with the Iranian regime, but it would be incorrect to automatically put
the blame for Saturday’s attack right at the regime’s doorstep.

WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden on Saturday
underscored US support for efforts to protect civilians amid an Israeli siege

Gaza.
More than one million people in the northern part of
the crowded enclave have been ordered to flee ahead of the expected assault, an

US advises its citizens in Gaza to move closer to
Egypt's Rafah crossing
Oct 15, 2023
RIYADH: The US government on Saturday advised its
citizens in Gaza to move south toward the Rafah border crossing with Egypt to
be ready for its possible reopening after a Hamas attack in Israel drew Israeli
military retaliation in the densely populated coastal enclave.
Washington worked with Egypt, Israel and Qatar to try
to open the Rafah crossing for limited hours on Saturday afternoon to allow
Palestinian-Americans to leave, a senior State Department official told
reporters travelling with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
But it was unclear whether Palestinian Islamist group
Hamas, which controls Gaza, would allow access to the crossing, or whether any
US citizens were able to exit, the official said later. It was not immediately
known whether the United States would make another attempt to get Rafah opened
on Sunday.
"We have informed US citizens in Gaza with whom
we are in contact that if they assess it to be safe, they may wish to move
closer to the Rafah border crossing," a US State Department spokesperson
said. "There may be very little notice if the crossing opens and it may only
open for a limited time."

The Sick Alliance between the Left and Muslim
Extremists
By Charles Lipson
15-10-2023
The virulent anti-Israel protests across America and
Europe throw a glaring light on the bizarre alliance between left-wing
activists and militant Muslims. That odd combination has been the bedrock of
political activism at universities and in the streets for years. It began in
universities, where it now dominates political discourse, threatens Jewish
students, and intimidates anyone brave enough to voice their dissent. We can
now see how it has spread far beyond the campus.
The left supports gay rights and gay marriage.
Militant Muslims toss gays off buildings. None would dare hold a public march
in Pakistan, Iran, or Saudi Arabia.
These beliefs are not marginal for either group. They
are foundational, and they are profoundly opposed to each other. Still, the two
groups have formed a long-standing alliance. How do they deal with these
profound differences? And why are they allied?
They deal with differences very simply: They never
mention them when they act jointly, primarily against Israel and its supporters
across the world. They have joined together to form a more powerful coalition
against shared enemies. They would destroy that partnership by raising issues
where they differ.

CLAIM: MSNBC has quietly pulled three Muslim journos
from the anchor chair since Hamas attack
FuzzyChimp
October 14, 2023
We've been reporting on MSNBC's brave attempts to
carefully provide even-handed coverage between the Israelis and those who
murdered people in their beds, shot teenagers in the back at a concert,
murdered babies, raped women, and kidnapped families.
First, MSNBC described the mass murder as a 'very big
gift to Benjamin Netanyahu'. Then, the network engaged in victim blaming while
the bodies were still warm. Most recently, they've hosted guests who have
suggested the solution is for Israel to give in to the demands of the
terrorists. It was so bad that the ADL's Jonathan Greenblatt went on-air on
MSNBC's Morning Joe and blasted the network for their ridiculous coverage.
Now claims have surfaced that MSNBC is squelching
their biggest three Muslim personalities in response to backlash over the
coverage.

Between state and mosque: new book explores the
turbulent history of Islamic politics in Mozambique
October 15, 2023
Mozambique is a multi-religious southern African
nation with excellent relations between faiths. Relations between Muslims and
the state have been good too. But the situation became more complicated in 2017
when a bloody jihadist insurgency broke out in the north. Eric Morier-Genoud
has published extensively on politics and religion in Mozambique. His latest
book, Towards Jihad? Muslims and Politics in Postcolonial Mozambique, looks at
the historical relationship between Islam and politics in the country. He
fielded some questions from The Conversation Africa.
Islam has a very old presence in Mozambique. It is
estimated to have arrived within the first century of the start of the faith,
with Arab, Ottoman and Persian traders. It settled at once during and after the
8th century among new Swahili networks, cultures and societies that developed
on the east African coast between Somalia and what is today Mozambique.
Expansion of the Islamic faith inland was slow and
only made significant progress in the 19th and 20th centuries. This was the
time when European colonial powers occupied Africa, building new infrastructure
such as roads and railways that helped the spread of different faiths.
At independence in 1975, Muslims represented 15% of
the population of Mozambique. The latest census indicates it stood at 19% in
2017. Today Muslims live mostly on the coast and in the north of the country. A
majority of the population of Niassa and Cabo Delgado provinces are Muslim, as
are 40% of the population of Nampula province.

PPP struggles to find backers for Senate session
Iftikhar A. Khan
October 15, 2023
ISLAMABAD: Despite the controversial rejection of two
successive requisitions to summon the Senate session in the recent past, the
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been making efforts for the past five days to
seek required support for the requisition of a Senate session — this time to
discuss the unfolding situation in Gaza.
So far, its efforts have failed to yield the required
number of signatures. The support of 26 members is required for the requisition
and the PPP so far has 23 signatures, including of the JI lawmaker. Informed
sources told Dawn that the PPP was short of just three signatures to be able to
do what it failed to do twice.
Mushtaq Ahmed of Jamaat-i-Islami is the only senator
from a party other than the PPP to have signed the requisition. They said two
senators from Awami National Party (ANP), who withdrew their signatures last
time, conveyed to the PPP that they “have talked to their leadership and have
expressed readiness to sign the requisition”, which will take the number of 25
— just one short of the 26 required to request a session.

Sindh govt proposes MDCAT be held afresh on Nov 19

KARACHI: Ending days of speculations that followed the
Sindh government’s decision to hold afresh the Medical and Dental College
