Talking Tough On Terror: There Will Be No Talks With Pakistan Till Terrorism Is Wiped Out, Says The Home Minister

Home Minister, Amit Shah

-----

PTI Nowshera/Jammu /22.09.24,

Talking tough on terror, Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said no stone pelter or terrorist will be released in Jammu and Kashmir and there will be no talks with Pakistan till terrorism is wiped out.

At an election rally in Nowshera in support of J-K BJP president Ravinder Raina, the senior BJP leader said he would like to talk to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, whom he referred to as "lions".

“They (NC-Congress alliance) want to release stone pelters and terrorists (after formation of their government as promised in their manifesto). Farooq Abdullah is talking about revival of terrorism in Jammu hills but I want to tell them that this is Modi government and we will bury terrorism in ‘patal’ (deep inside earth). No terrorist or stone pelter will be released,” he said.

“I want to tell Farooq Abdullah and Rahul Gandhi that there will be no dialogue with Pakistan till terrorism is wiped out. I will talk with my lions (youth of J-K) and not with Pakistan.” Referring to underground bunkers constructed by the government for the safety of border residents over the years, he said there will be no need for such structures as “nobody has the power to open fire” from across the border.

“If they fire a bullet, we will respond with a shell,” he said.

He also slammed the NC-Congress leaders' remarks on reservation, and said nobody will be allowed to touch reservation given to deprived sections, including Paharis, Gujjars, Dalits, other backward classes.

“Rahul Gandhi is saying in Amercia that there is no need for reservation. I want to tell him that you will not be allowed to finish reservation for the deserving communities,” he said.

Indian Fugitive Radical Islamic Preacher Zakir Naik Set To Visit Pakistan On An Invitation From The Government

Indian Fugitive Radical Islamic Preacher Zakir Naik

----

September 21, 2024

ISLAMABAD: Dr. Zakir Naik, a renowned Islamic scholar, is set to visit Pakistan this year alongside Sheikh Faruk Naik, after receiving an invitation from the Government of Pakistan.

Dr. Naik had previously expressed his desire to visit Pakistan during a podcast with a Pakistani YouTuber, where he shared that his initial plans to visit in 2020 were thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

When questioned about why he chose Malaysia over Pakistan after leaving India, Dr. Naik explained that while it would have been easy for him to relocate to Pakistan given his popularity, he chose to prioritize a principle of Shariat that advises tolerating small losses to avoid greater ones.

It’s worth noting that Dr. Naik is the founder and president of the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) and Peace TV, and has been recognized for his efforts with awards such as the Sharjah Award for Voluntary Work, Dubai International Holy Quran Award, and King Faisal Prize. His work focuses on comparative religion, and he has delivered over 4,000 lectures worldwide.

Albania Is Planning To Create Its Own Muslim Vatican City

En.Mehrnews.Com

-----

22-09-2024

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama says he wants to create a statelet.

Albania is planning to create its own Vatican City. This one, however, will be a Muslim one.

The New York Times reported that Albania's prime minister, Edi Rama, will announce plans for a sovereign microstate within its capital, Tirana, that will follow the practices of the Bektashi Order.

If all goes to plan, the so-called "Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order" will become the world's smallest state, just a quarter of the size of Vatican City. The 10-hectare patch of land will have its own administration, passports and borders.

Contrary to Islamic values, the new state would allow alcohol, permit women to wear what they want and impose no lifestyle rules.

22 Sep 2024

KANGAR, Sept 22 — The Perlis Islamic Affairs Department (Jaips) seized 63 items related to deviant teachings during an integrated operation at two premises suspected to be linked to GISB Holdings SdnBhd (GISBH) yesterday.

Jaips director Najmuddin Abdul Karim said the Op Global raid was conducted by the department’s Enforcement Division in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police.

“The operation was conducted for enforcement purposes, in line with the fatwa on deviant teachings with spiritual elements, which was gazetted on August 28, 2024.

“During the raids on the two GISBH-linked premises in Perlis, we discovered 63 items related to the teachings,” he said in a statement today, which was posted on Jaips’ official Facebook page.

In this regard, Najmuddin advised Muslims throughout the state to avoid teachings declared deviant by the Perlis Fatwa Committee and urged anyone with information regarding these beliefs to come forward and assist the authorities.

The Perlis Fatwa Committee in its special meeting on Friday concluded that the teachings of GISBH contain deviant elements, particularly in its spiritual beliefs.

Meanwhile, a Bernama check at a childcare centre in Arau, suspected to be linked to GISBH, found that it has been sealed, with a Notice of Seal posted by the Perlis Department of Social Welfare, effective yesterday.

Israel’s Military Offensive Drives Arab And Muslim Vote In US Presidential Race, Arab-American Convention Confirms

September 22, 2024

Community anger over US support for Israel’s bombardment in the Gaza Strip spilled open among Arab and Muslim voters and activists during a convention organized by the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in Dearborn, Michigan last week.

The ADC’s Annual National Convention, which ran from Sept. 12-15, was hosted outside Washington for the first time — an intentional choice aimed at answering the Wall Street Journal’s accusations that Dearborn was the city of terrorists in the US, ADC Chairman Safa Rifka told Arab News.

Dearborn is a “city of fantastic citizens, proud American citizens” and “we wanted to make a statement that it is the capital of Arab America,” he said.

The majority of the nearly 1,000 attendees demanded that Democratic officeholders support the third-party candidacy of Dr. Jill Stein, who many believe is the only presidential contender to strongly criticize the actions of Israel’s government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

More than 50,000 Gazans have been killed during the near yearlong war, but independent sources banned by Israel’s government from entering Gaza contend the number is in excess of 150,000.

“The Gaza war dominates our concerns,” Rifka said “Clearly the community is concerned about how the elected officials in this country will respond to the carnage.”

Several attendees, activists and elected officials told The Ray Hanania Radio Show that the US government needed to do more than simply criticize Hamas for its assault on Oct. 7, which provoked Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

A few attendees expressed support for Republican candidate Donald Trump and others said they were hoping for Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris to not only condemn Hamas’ violence but also expand it to condemn the military campaign by Netanyahu’s government.

Michigan State Rep. Alabas Farhat said that when he and his colleagues called for a ceasefire, “dozens of representatives and elected officials” signed the letter.

Many attendees believe it is still not too late for candidates to take action. With roughly six weeks until the election, Illinois State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid said that not only was the door open but there was a need for candidates to “change policy, protect lives and to earn the support of so many people who care deeply about this issue.”

“People need to vote in November and people need to engage with their elected officials to let them know where they stand,” he said.

Her biggest concern, she said, was the growing idea of “nihilism” and “cynicism” and “the idea that nothing matters, nothing will change, so there’s no point in trying.”

No Need For Dhannipur Mosque, Says Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid Case Litigant

September 21, 2024

After the Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF), set up by the Sunni Central Waqf Board to oversee the construction of the proposed Dhannipur mosque in Ayodhya, dissolved its committees, including one meant for the shrine’s development, with the project being hit by a severe fund crunch, Iqbal Ansari, son of the oldest litigant in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case Hashim Ansari and himself a previous litigant on Saturday targeted the foundation for doing nothing productive for construction of the mosque. The proposed mosque suffered due to inner politics being played.

“More than four years passed by but U.P. Sunni Central Waqf Board and the foundation failed to do anything apart from only showing proposed Mosque layout and again changing it, only politics have been done in the name of constructing the mosque. They [IICF] failed to collect donations,” Mr. Ansari told The Hindu.

Dharavi mosque demolition spurs political fisticuffs between BJP and MVA

Sep 22, 2024

MUMBAI: The BMC’s action against the illegal section of a mosque in Dharavi, which was opposed by hundreds of Muslims, led to political fisticuffs between the BJP and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi on Saturday.

While the BJP slammed members of the Muslim community for creating trouble, opposition parties trained their guns on the ruling parties, saying the issue was a ploy to trigger communal trouble. They also lambasted the state home department led by deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Hundreds of residents blocked roads in Dharavi on Saturday, as the BMC began demolishing an illegal construction on the premises of a local mosque. The situation was defused only after it called off the demolition following an undertaking by the mosque’s trustees.

All sorts of politicians subsequently got into the act, among them BJP leaders KiritSomaiya and NiteshRane, who said it was an attempt to foment trouble. “Jihadi people in Dharavi did not allow the civic body’s action,” said Rane while Somaiya said this was “land jihad”, which the government ought not to tolerate.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and city Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad questioned the motive behind the BMC action so close to the elections. “There is unity among the people of Dharavi and the last resort is to create riots,” said Aaditya, who added that this was done was with the aim of “dividing the Dharavi Bachao Samiti and keeping Mumbai in Adani’s hands” and also to foment riots.

“Both religions want peace,” he said. “Wherever the BJP is losing, it stirs up trouble to create a religious divide. None of them are speaking on the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh and how the Bangladesh cricket team was allowed in India.”

Gaikwad, who was a four-term MLA from Dharavi before she won the Lok Sabha elections, said the civic body was deliberately taking action despite her requests to put the action on hold. “I had met CM Eknath Gaikwad earlier on Friday and requested him to stay the action,” she said. She also made an appeal to the public from the police station, asking them to go back.

MVA leaders SupriyaSule and Sanjay Raut trained the guns on the home department led by deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, accusing it of failure in preventing communal tension in several areas of the state. Responding to this, Fadnavis said that this was not the first time action was taken against the mosque. “Even earlier, a notice was sent to the trustees about the demolition of the illegal portion. I hope nobody will try to prevent the action by citing a law-and-order issue,” he told media persons.

Lord probably wanted me to speak on His laddu: Naidu

Sep 21, 2024

Vijayawada: Asserting that the cleansing of administration in the state started with Tirumala, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said the new executive officer (EO) of the TTD, who was appointed a few days after he took charge as CM, has taken several measures in that direction, including blacklisting of erring suppliers.

"I have told him to take all measures required to restore sanctity at the hill shrine, and he has been doing it silently without publicising it daily. I think the Lord himself wanted me to speak the truth about His ladduprasadam. We are just instruments, the Lord does everything. It's my firm belief. How can they compromise on the quality of ghee in the name of reverse tendering? Along with the quality, it is a matter of maintaining and upholding sacred practices and the sentiments of crores of devotees. No one can play with sentiments, traditions, and religious practices," said Naidu, while adding that the state govt will not spare those involved in the supply of adulterated ghee to the temple.

Taking on the YSRCP, Naidu said when the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) report was released, instead of responding to it they evaded it. "How can cow ghee cost 320 per kilo? What have reverse tenders to do in the preparation of laddus offered to Lord Venkateswara? Instead of admitting their mistake, how can they shamelessly call it diversion politics," he wondered.

He said the NDA govt places great importance on preserving the sanctity of temples and sentiments of devotees. Every religion has its own traditions and customs that need to be protected, he observed. He also pointed out "many misdeeds" that occurred in temples during the YSRCP regime.

Imam Khamenei: Internal strength, Islamic nation unity is sufficient to remove Zionist entity from Palestine

Sun, 22 Sep 2024

TEHRAN-SABA: The Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, stressed on Saturday that the internal strength of the Islamic nation is sufficient to remove the Zionist entity from Palestine.

Tasnim International News Agency reported that the Leader of the Islamic Revolution received a group of government officials, ambassadors of Islamic countries, and guests of the 38th session of the Islamic Unity Conference at the Imam Khomeini Husseiniyah (may Allah be pleased with him) coinciding with the birth anniversary of the Great Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (peace be upon him) and Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (peace be upon him).

During this meeting, His Eminence stressed that if the Islamic nation uses its internal strength, the Zionist entity will be removed from the heart of the Islamic nation.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution added: If we want the message of our unity to be true in the world, there must be unity among us.

His Eminence said, perhaps one of the greatest prophetic lessons for us is building the nation; Those thirteen-year struggles in Mecca led to the migration that was the foundation of the Islamic Ummah.

He added, We need this lesson today, we lack an Islamic Ummah today. There are many Islamic countries, and nearly two billion Muslims live in the world, but the title of Ummah cannot be given to this group; because it is not coordinated, because it is not in the same direction.

22 September 2024

The former head of royal protection says he warned the Royal Family about Mohamed al Fayed's reputation before Princess Diana took her sons on holiday with him.

The former Harrods owner, who died last year at the age of 94, was described as a "monster" earlier this week by lawyers representing 37 alleged sexual abuse victims.

The women say he raped and sexually assaulted them while they worked at the luxury department store, prowling the shop floor and "cherry-picking" women to be brought to his executive suite.

Now, Dai Davies says people were aware of the Egyptian businessman's reputation as far back as the 1990s, and that he raised concerns about him to the Royal Family.

Man charged in connection with Montreal-area mosque altercation that left 3 injured

September 22, 2024

A 24-year-old man has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose in connection with Friday's altercation at a mosque in Châteauguay, Que., that left three men injured.

Three men in their 50s sustained minor injuries during the altercation after a suspect with a knife entered the Centre CulturelMusulman de Châteauguay. One was taken to hospital.

On Friday, Châteauguay police said the man had a knife when he entered the mosque, located on St-Jean-Baptiste Boulevard, and an altercation broke out among several individuals at around 1:40 p.m.

Rachid Azmane, the centre's administrator, said he witnessed the situation unfold. People inside the mosque noticed the man sitting down before he proceeded to change seats a few times, which struck Azmane as strange, he said.

After noticing more strange behavior, mosque leaders decided to delay the prayer while a few men approached the suspect and brought him to the centre's basement to speak with him and find out what was going on, said Azmane.

IGP denies senior cops taking ‘protection money’ from GISBH as claimed in viral TikTok video

By Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — Claims linking senior police officers to be receiving money from scandal-riddled Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings SdnBhd (GISBH) are false and malicious, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told Bernama today.

The inspector-general of police denied the allegations that have been spreading on social media, believed to have started with a TikTok video in which several named senior officers were said to be protecting GISBH in exchange for money into their personal accounts.

“We know this is a fake account that is spreading slander, and the claims involving police officers with GISBH are untrue,” Razarudin was quoted as saying by the national news agency when contacted.

PAS cautions against rushed judgment on GISBH, calls for fair investigation

By Malay Mail

22 Sep 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has said that investigations into Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH) must be done cautiously and carefully to avoid injustice, double standards, or excessive actions.

In a Facebook post today, Takiyuddin said that PAS welcomed a transparent, thorough, and professional investigation into the various allegations against GISBH, including its erroneous beliefs and the exploitation of children.

While the party fully supports firm action against those found guilty, he said the eagerness to punish should not adversely affect the group as a whole, especially its innocent members or the lawful, compliant, and beneficial activities of GISBH.

“PAS believes that the positive aspects of the group, including its extensive business network, should be preserved and protected from hasty and unfair actions that may stem from impulsive sentiment, prejudice, business competition, or certain political agendas by those seeking to exploit the situation.”

As Muslim community grows, old and worn-out Qurans are overwhelming mosques

By Mohamud Farah

September 21, 2024

For the past 16 years, retired tailor Mukhtar Isse has been rebinding worn-out Qurans, using tape and glue to keep the sacred texts in the hands of local Muslims.

Minnesota imams say strict rules regarding the disposal of the Muslim holy book, along with the state’s environmental regulations, have led to a pileup of old and damaged Qurans at local mosques. With no designated facilities for appropriately disposing the sacred texts, the issue has become a pressing concern for the Muslim community.

Ahemd Burhan Mohamed of New Brighton, who in 2018 became the first American to win the Dubai International Holy Quran Award, said the number of students memorizing the Quran is rapidly increasing. Nearly 800 participated in the Imam Shatibi Quran Competition held in July at John F. Kennedy High School in Bloomington.

Haji-Ahmed Mohamed Firin, owner of Tawakal Bookstore in the 24 Mall in Minneapolis, said parents visit his store seeking guidance on how to dispose of worn-out Qurans.

In the past, families would inherit Qurans due to the scarcity of paper, leading to careful preservation of the texts. However, today’s abundance of printed Qurans — and the number of young Muslims in Quranic classes — has made the disposal of old and worn-out copies more challenging.

“As children quickly wear out and rip pages from their own Quranic books, families struggle to find a proper way to dispose of the texts in accordance with Islamic rules,” said Imam Yusuf Abdulle, executive director of the Islamic Association of North America (IANA) in Minneapolis.

“We want to follow the proper Islamic guidelines for disposing of old Quranic texts, but we must also adhere to the state’s environmental laws. It’s a challenging situation for us.”

While some Islamic traditions permit the burning of worn-out sacred books as a last resort, environmental regulations and concerns in Minnesota complicate that practice for mosques.

According to Imam Mohamed Abdi Shuayb, an Islamic scholar and founder of the Bayan Research Center in St. Anthony, “Islamically, it is permissible for old and worn-out Quranic texts to be burned appropriately.”

He added: “It is unfortunate that we have over 60 mosques in Minnesota, and no one in the state is performing this noble task that preserves the environment and benefits the entire nation.”

The Egyptian Dar al-Ifta, established in 1895 and renowned for its religious rulings, has emphasized the importance of preserving the Quran. According to its guidance on handling worn-out and damaged Qurans, every Muslim should ensure that the Quran is not exposed to disrespect or loss.

FBI agents boards ship operated by same company linked to Baltimore bridge collapse

Sep 22, 2024

FBI agents on Saturday boarded a ship managed by Synergy Marine Group, the same company linked to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore that killed six. The FBI confirmed the inspection of the Maersk Saltoro at the Port of Baltimore, according to an AP report.

The FBI, the US Environmental Protection Agency's Criminal Investigation Division, and Coast Guard Investigative Services are carrying out court-authorized law enforcement activity on the vessel, according to a New York Times report citing authorities.

The operation comes three days after the US Justice Department filed a lawsuit against the Dali's owner and operator, accusing them of being “grossly negligent” and “reckless” in the lead-up to the March collision. The government seeks over $100 million in damages for emergency response and federal aid to port employees affected by the incident. The lawsuit follows an NTSB preliminary report in May detailing the ship's electrical issues prior to the bridge collapse.

The collapse occurred on March 26 when the cargo ship Dali lost power and struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, killing six maintenance workers. However, the crew of the Dali was not injured. It took authorities six weeks to recover all the bodies. The families of three victims announced their own lawsuit against the Dali's owner on Tuesday.

'China continues to behave aggressively': Biden caught saying in hot mic blunder

Sep 22, 2024

US President Joe Biden was caught making behind-closed-door remarks about China because of a hot mic blunder at the Quad summit held on Saturday."China continues to behave aggressively, testing us all across the region," Biden was heard saying, as reported by AFP.

Biden said that while Chinese President Xi Jinping is concentrating on "domestic economic challenges, "looking to buy himself some diplomatic space, in my view, to aggressively pursue China's interest."

However, he insisted that recent "intense efforts" by the US, including a call with Xi in April, were aiding in reducing tensions.

Trying to downplay the error, a senior official said, "I don't think I have much to elaborate on that. It's consistent with what has been said before, and I don't think it'll be much of a surprise that our inside voice matches our outside voice."

"I think it's not surprising that China would have been on the agenda. It's an Indo-Pacific convening. This is an Indo-Pacific partnership. China is a major country in the Indo-Pacific. But I think it's also fair to say that there were a number of other topics on the agenda," he added.

Khamenei: Israel Committing ‘Shameless Crimes’ Against Children, Must Be Eliminated

21 September 2024

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday that Israel was committing “shameless crimes” against children, not combatants, and called on Islamic nations to work together to wipe it out.

Khamenei said Israel was not even hiding its different forms of “shameless crimes” in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria. It is not combating “fighting men, but ordinary people,” Khamenei falsely told a group of envoys from Muslim countries in Tehran in remarks broadcast on state TV.

“Unable to hurt the real fighters in Palestine, they are venting their malicious anger on small children, on hospital patients, and on schools filled with young children,” he said.

“This inner strength can eliminate the Zionist regime, this malignant cancerous tumor, from the heart of the Islamic community in Palestine and get rid of US domination and coercive interference in the region,” he said.

His comments came a day after an Israeli airstrike on the Lebanese capital Beirut killed multiple top commanders of the Hezbollah terror group, including its head of operations.

38th Int’l Islamic Unity Conference wraps up, urges Muslim cooperation to realize common goals

Sep 21, 2024

The three-day conference came to an end on Saturday in Tehran, issuing a final communique in which participants stressed the need for cooperation among Islamic countries to realize their common goals and values.

“This conference is being held at a time when the Islamic world is full of grief due to barbaric crimes by the usurping Zionist regime. The widespread assassinations of resistance leaders and commanders as well as the brutal massacre of the oppressed Palestinian people on one hand, and Western countries’ decisive support for the crimes of this regime make it necessary the cooperation of Islamic countries and Ummah more than ever to realize common values and goals.”

The communique also said that the Israeli regime, under support by US-led global arrogance, is pursuing two plans namely the occupation of all Palestinian territories and legitimizing its fake identity through normalization of ties with Islamic countries. According to the conference’s final statement, the participants termed the Quds issue as one of the most important common values of the Islamic world and one of the issues unifying Muslim countries.

“Based on religious principles and rules, supporting and defending the oppressed people of Palestine is one of the religious and moral obligations, and silence in the face of the Zionist regime’s crimes against humanity is in contrast with all Islamic and human values.”

At least 50 killed in Iran coal mine blast: State media

22 Sep 2024

An explosion at a mine in eastern Iran has killed at least 51 people and injured 20, Iranian state television reported, adding that many workers were feared trapped.

The blast took place due to a methane gas leak at a coal mine run by the Madanjoo company in Tabas, some 540km (335 miles) southeast of the capital, Tehran, the IRNA news agency said on Sunday.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was preparing to travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, said he ordered all efforts be made to rescue those trapped and aid their families. He added that an investigation has been launched into the incident.

This is not the first disaster to strike Iran’s mining industry. In 2017, a coal mine explosion killed at least 42 people. In 2013, 11 workers were killed in two separate mining incidents. At least 20 workers were killed in several incidents in 2009.

Former Iran Military Unit Chief, Notorious For Assassination Plots, Dies

September 22, 2024

Reza Seraj, former foreign intelligence chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), died on September 21 after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour. Seraj played a critical role in Iran's overseas assassination plots and was designated by the US Treasury Department for human rights abuses.

Reza Seraj was a key figure in orchestrating the IRGC's covert operations abroad. Last year, the US Treasury Department sanctioned him for his involvement in overseas assassination attempts and numerous human rights violations in Iran.

His career within Iran's intelligence apparatus spanned decades, beginning in the 1990s when he operated as a senior interrogator under the alias "Alavi," notorious for extracting forced confessions from political and student activists through torture.

Among his controversial actions was his leadership of the IRGC's Special Intelligence Directorate, Unit 4000, where his role in an uncovered plot to assassinate an Israeli in Cyprus eventually led to his removal. JavadGhaffari, a figure once expelled from Syria, took over the unit following Seraj's dismissal.

Exclusive: Iran gave Russia missiles but no launchers, sources say

By Jonathan Landay

September 21, 2024

WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Iran did not include mobile launchers with the close-range ballistic missiles that Washington last week accused Tehran of delivering to Russia for use against Ukraine, according to three sources with knowledge of the matter.

The sources - a European diplomat, a European intelligence official and a U.S. official - said it was not clear why Iran did not supply launchers with the Fath-360 missiles, raising questions about when and if the weapons will be operational.

The U.S. official, who like the other sources spoke on condition of anonymity, said Iran had not delivered the launchers at the time of the U.S. announcement about Iran's delivery of the weapons. The European intelligence official said without elaborating that they did not expect Iran to provide launchers.

Ruling Uncharted Territory: Islamic Emirate governance in northeastern Afghanistan

Fabrizio Foschini

22 Sep 2024

The relationship between central government and political actors at the periphery has long been studied in Afghanistan in order to understand representation, legitimacy, patronage and conflict. In the years of the insurgency and since the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), the Taleban movement has remained a cohesive force in Afghanistan’s highly fragmented political landscape. However, the IEA faces challenges similar to those experienced by previous governments in how to rule, in a centralised way, a large and varied country beset by structural hurdles in terms of infrastructure and budget. This themed report focuses on northeastern Afghanistan, an area which, before August 2021, had never come under Islamic Emirate rule – the provinces of Takhar, Badakhshan and Panjshir, plus parts of Baghlan. In a new themed report, Fabrizio Foschini has been looking at the constraints and challenges that have been faced by the IEA in organising its administration there over the last three years

The northeast of Afghanistan constitutes a case of particular interest, given its geographical, historical and socio-political specificities. In the years between 1996 and 2001, it saw the most effective military opposition to the first Islamic Emirate. In the years after 2001, political-military networks hailing from the region maintained their importance both locally and at the central level, reaping the rewards of having helped the United States topple the first IEA. The emergence of an insurgency and its ultimate conquest of state power has removed or marginalised these elites. Elsewhere, the Emirate had years of solid shadow administration with cadre ready to take over administrative and military posts, but in the northeast, core affiliates waiting to take over were less numerous or had limited social influence.

Also complicating central rule are four decades of internal conflicts and foreign interventions, which have left scars on Afghanistan’s political landscape at the sub-national level. In the northeast, the role of local politico-military powerbrokers, based on the key elements of regional/ethnic belonging, personal connection and shared economic interests and with strong ties to the centre, was particularly evident during the Republic.

Since 2021, the IEA has had to devise strategies to expand and consolidate its rule in this region, and safeguard against possible threats to its control. In some areas, such as Panjshir, this has been pursued primarily through military occupation. Elsewhere, in most of Takhar and Badakhshan, the emphasis has been more on co-option, seeking to appease local elites in order to prevent any thought of opposition and also to tap into their influence in local communities in order to strengthen and expand the status of local IEA commanders. In doing so, Kabul initially acknowledged the relevance of locally specific human and social features: for example, wherever possible, it selected senior local officials from among its own cadre from whatever group is locally in the majority, Uzbeks or Tajiks.

Doctor helps to save Afghan babies' lives

Dr Fernando, a consultant paediatrician and associate medical director at Yeovil District Hospital, told BBC Somerset gaining access to Afghanistan was difficult after the Taliban retook power in the summer of 2021.

"It seemed really impossible to deliver the project," he said, citing reasons such as it being illegal for men to train women and for girls of more than primary school age to get education.

The entire South-East region was calm during the recent #EndBad Governance Protest. What informed this? Was it an affirmation of support for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration?

Well, you can look at it from both sides. In the first place, the South-East, the Igbo people generally, having witnessed war and having seen what insurrection means would want any government that has been elected and confirmed to have been elected to govern and finish its tenure. Whether the Igbo people like the government or not,  they believe that it is only a democratic process, through the ballot box, that is the most peaceful, acceptable way of expressing whatever feeling.

Since the present government has gone through the process and the politicians who challenged his victory did so  on the strength of their right to express their feelings through the court and the Supreme Court confirmed the president as being duly elected, the average Igbo man will accept that and wait for the next election. The average Igbo man will protest peacefully, either by way of petitions or any other peaceful means if the government isn’t favouring him or affecting him negatively. That is one side.

In other words, I can tell you that the Igbo people are democratic in nature. I tell people, who cares to listen, that the day God created the Igbo people was the day He  created democracy.

If you go to the primitive Igbo setting when the word democracy hasn’t been brought down by the white man, the way Igbo people arrived at decision wasn’t by any one man occupying any seat and dishing it out to the people. We don’t know what is called monarchy; it wasn’t in our place. The people will gather at the play ground, as we call it, to decide on what to do. Even if it is to go to war, it has to be decided and at that meeting, every man will be given the opportunity to express himself. In fact, if he is a very poor person in the society, the first thing he will say to give  background to whatever he will say is that whatever he will say here, if it isn’t good, throw it away, don’t throw me away. And having laid that foundation, he will proceed and make his remark and then at the end of the day people will reason that it could be what  that one lonely person has said that would make more sense. And once a decision is taken, it is binding on all. So, what else is democracy? That’s the way the Igbo societ

Now to come to the second leg of your question: for as long as the records can show, from 1947, Igbo people have been victims of sectarian  crises, religious crises, all manner of crises that they have nothing to do with and their places of business and their persons will be targeted and blamed. Even domestic quarrels within where they are living, an Igbo man could be blamed for that domestic quarrel and these have happened so many times. And as we begin to hear very prominent people who ought to know, who have exposures, who travelled abroad, read extensively,  lose their guards and make certain unguarded statements about the Igbo and incite people to carry out actions against the Igbo, then you begin to ask yourself, which other way do we approach this thing to reduce our losses and the hatred?

One would have expected that if somebody like BayoOnanuga, a very senior person in journalism, I used to enjoy his articles, if he could be in that position with the president and said the things he said and even  when many people, including his colleagues said this is unlike you, why did you say this, he said he has no apology!

If a respected traditional ruler in  Lagos State who retired as a very senior police officer, sitting as the father of his domain, could, because of what he perceived was the outcome of an election, or the way Igbo people were likely to vote during the election period, threaten that if Igbo people didn’t vote for [their candidate], he would throw them into the Lagoon and if the wife of the president could say the things credited to her, I watched the video clip of what she said about Igbo people, we needed to ask, what did we do to these particular persons in these high places that they would be making these kind of incendiary statements? What do you expect those at the lower ladder of the society to do? They will say that if their leaders have seen these people as the problem they have, then they must be their problem. Yet, nobody has asked that the internally generated revenue that has placed Lagos where it is in world economic map, making  Lagos richer than so many African states, where is that revenue coming from?  Whether it is based on property rate or taxes they pay, or based on what is imported and exported or whatever it is called, the South-East people continue to make contributions wherever they live and what they get in return is this type of hate.

All along, since 1999, Igbo people have hardly voted for their own people. I led Chief OdumegwuOjukwu to presidential election in Nigeria; how many votes did he get in Igboland? Others defeated him in Igboland. He came third, meaning that two others defeated him. And nobody cared. That was Igbo man exercising his franchise. They weren’t thinking of whether he was the one that led them during the war or not. War has passed. It was in Igboland that a man called UmaruAltine  from Shifawa village in Sokoto State came to Enugu, stayed in Enugu and contested election. The NCNC, the ruling party in the area, gave him nomination; he won election in Enugu and became the First Mayor of Enugu State. Nobody said because he was Fulani, why should it happen? In the next election, NCNC denied him nomination; he ran as an independent candidate and won again! How many Fulani people were in Enugu to have voted for him? Igbo people found him that he could deliver;  since he did well in the first term, so whether you gave him no

APC Pressuring Military To Withdraw From Collation Centres, Pushing INEC To Cancel Edo Election

21 September 2024

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of piling pressure on the military to withdraw from collation centers.

Naija News reports that the Edo State governorship election was held today, with results from polling units, wards and local government areas already being collated.

In a statement on Saturday evening, State Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, said that the APC is doing this to pave the way for thugs who are to work with some unscrupulous policemen in disrupting the collation of results.

The last straw that broke Ruto, Gachagua unstable relationship

22-09-2024

It is official. President William Ruto and his deputy RigathiGachagua have severed ties and the camaraderie they once enjoyed is dead.

The duo has not been on talking terms since September 1. The straw that broke the camel’s back, The Sunday Standard can reveal, was an encounter at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when the President was leaving for Beijing for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

On that day two events took place but their ripple effect saw the Head of State and the second in command sever ties. Earlier that day Gachagua had attended the Methodist Church of Kenya’s 100th-year anniversary.

In response to the National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, contention that Mt Kenya was ungrateful despite getting seven slots of Cabinet secretaries as well as the position of the DP as opposed to Nyanza, Gachagua downplayed the claims.

The DP fired back, “I saw some debate in Nyanza where some leaders tried to suggest in a very reckless manner that this region has not shown gratitude for the positions that the President has given us in the Cabinet. That is not true.”

He added, “That is trying to abuse our people we have shown the highest form of gratitude to him in the sense that when he supported President Uhuru, when his time came we stood with him. That is the highest form of gratitude the region can give to a leader in this country.”

The DP forged on, “Actually in matters of gratitude it is the other way round. He is the one who owes us gratitude in this region because we have already vindicated ourselves.”

Gachagua said although the region was appreciative of the positions that the President had given Mt Kenya, the region had merited the positions because ‘‘we invested heavily in this government’’.
