Solicitor General Of India: Why Should Non-Believers Pay Higher Cost For Halal-Certified Products
20 Jan 2025
Image used for representational purposes.
-----------
NEW DELHI: Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta on Monday raised in the Supreme Court the issue of halal certification of non-meat products such as iron bars and cement, asking why should non-believers be made to pay higher cost for halal-certified products.
The law officer made the submissions before the apex court which was hearing the pleas challenging a notification prohibiting the manufacturing, storage, sale and distribution of food products with halal certification within UP, except for items produced for export.
"So far as halal meat is concerned, nobody can have any objection. But your lordships would be shocked, as I was shocked, that even cement and iron bars used are to be halal certified," Mehta submitted before a bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih.
The top law officer referred to non-believers, who did not consume halal-certified products, and asked why they should be made to pay a higher price only because some people wanted halal-certified products.
The top court granted four weeks to the petitioners to file a rejoinder and said the matter would be heard in the week commencing March 24.
The November 18, 2023 notification was issued by the office of the commissioner, Food Safety and Drug Administration, Uttar Pradesh, under the provision of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
In its counter affidavit filed in the top court, the Centre said the grievance of the petitioner related to the November 18, 2023 notification issued by the Food Safety and Drug Administration of Uttar Pradesh, which fell entirely under the jurisdiction and authority of the state.
It said the Centre's Ministry of Commerce and Industry had no role or authority over such state-level regulations or notifications and an FIR was registered against one of the petitioners at Lucknow in a case related to Halal certification.
The affidavit said the ministry was primarily concerned with the promotion and regulation of international and domestic trade, industrial growth, and export promotion in India.
It said the ministry had no direct or indirect role in the enforcement, regulation or administration of laws relating to food safety, drug administration or any other matter raised in the petition.
"With an objective to streamline the halal certification process of meat and meat products as halal from India, Department of Commerce and APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) which is a regulatory body for export of meat, agricultural and processed food products requested QCI to develop a national scheme for certification of halal products," it said.
The affidavit said the Quality Council of India (QCI) developed the scheme titled "India Conformity assessment Scheme (i-CAS)-Halal" in accordance with international standards.
The apex court had in 2024 sought responses from the UP government and others on separate pleas challenging the notification prohibiting the manufacturing, storage, sale and distribution of food products with halal certification within Uttar Pradesh, except for items produced for export.
The petitioners counsel had said an FIR was lodged in UP against one of the petitioners and other entities alleging they were issuing forged halal certificates for financial gains.
Several petitions, including those by Halal India Private Limited and others and "Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind Halal Trust", were filed in the apex court.
In January last year, the top court, while hearing a plea by Jamiat Trust, directed no coercive steps would be taken against the trust and its office bearers in connection with the FIR lodged in Lucknow over Halal certification.

An Iranian court has sentenced the popular singer Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, known as Tataloo, to death on appeal after he was convicted of blasphemy, according to local media reports.
“The supreme court accepted the prosecutor’s objection” to a previous five-year jail term on offences including blasphemy, the reformist newspaper Etemad reported on Sunday.
It said “the case was reopened, and this time the defendant was sentenced to death for insulting the prophet”, referring to Islam’s prophet Muhammad.
The 37-year-old underground musician had been living in Istanbul since 2018 before Turkish police handed him over to Iran in December 2023.
Tataloo had also been sentenced to 10 years for promoting “prostitution” and in other cases was charged with disseminating “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic and publishing “obscene content”.
The heavily tattooed singer, known for combining rap, pop and R&B, was previously courted by conservative politicians as a way of reaching out to young, liberal-minded Iranians.
Tataloo even held an awkward televised meeting in 2017 with the ultra-conservative Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, who later died in a helicopter crash.
In 2015, Tataloo published a song in support of Iran’s nuclear programme that later unravelled in 2018 during the first US presidency of Donald Trump.

A Coalition Mosque Umbrella Organizations In The Netherlands Consider Legal Action Against De Telegraaf For Negative Coverage Of Muslims
19 January 2025

------------
The K9, a coalition of regional mosque umbrella organizations in the Netherlands, is considering taking legal action against De Telegraaf, citing the newspaper’s alleged ongoing negative coverage of Muslims. The K9 claims the newspaper’s articles contribute to incitement and the stigmatization of the Muslim community.
In a statement issued Sunday, the K9 pointed to an article from earlier this year in which a Utrecht-based Islamic history teacher was accused by the newspaper of encouraging non-integration. The article referenced a call from the teacher to give children Islamic names, a practice De Telegraaf suggested could discourage integration.
The K9 called this statement "absurd" and factually incorrect, adding that it is a fundamental right for individuals to choose their names freely. The coalition denounced the paper for portraying the act of naming children as a suspicious or politically charged choice.
The newspaper also drew criticism for labeling the teacher as "Salafist," a term often associated with extreme interpretations of Islam. The K9 argued that this label, which was later altered following complaints by Muslim Rights Watch Netherlands, reinforced negative stereotypes.
Further examples cited by the K9 include De Telegraaf’s reporting on a Rotterdam mosque that the paper linked to drug-related crime, as well as a column that tied the mosque umbrella organization FIO and the Milli Görüs organization to Hamas. The K9 claims these accusations are unfounded and only serve to further divide the community.
"Spreading these baseless accusations contributes to polarization and stigmatizes the Muslim community," the K9 said in its statement. "We urge De Telegraaf to end this campaign."

Deposed Awami League Of Bangladesh Mobilises Against Yunus Government Both Inside The Country And The World
January 19, 2025

----------
After months of maintaining a low profile, the deposed Awami League of Bangladesh has begun to mobilise both inside the country and in different parts of the world. The political party that ruled Bangladesh for over a decade and a half faced serious setbacks when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Cabinet colleagues were deposed and fled the country in August. However, over the past few weeks, AL leaders have begun to challenge the interim government headed by Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus.
Earlier this week, the joint secretary of the Awami League, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, lashed out against the Yunus government following the recommendations made by the Constitution Reforms Commission seeking fundamental changes to the state of Bangladesh. In a statement, the Awami League leader said in Dhaka that the “commission has recommended removal of secularism, socialism, and nationalism from the 1972 constitution and the recommendations are not acceptable at all.”
Former Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud, is known to have taken refuge in Belgium. and the All European Awamii League has been holding multiple meetings in Belgium protesting against growing instances of mob justice and breakdown in police system and administration.
The main overground political party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) that was in sync with the interim government in August and September is no longer extending unconditional support. On Sunday, General Secretary of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir echoed the concerns as enunciated by Mr. Hanif of the Awami League. Mr. Mirza Fakhrul said that the far reaching changes suggested by the reform commissions will not be accepted without all party consensus. The statement was made following an event on the 89th birth anniversary of founder of the BNP and late PresdentZiaur Rahman in Dhaka.

Tehran Stuns US Ahead Of Trump’s Return, Unveils 500-Meter Deep Underground Naval Missile Base
By Gazi Abbas Shahid
January 20, 2025
Iran Navy: Ahead of Donald Trump’s return to power as the 47th US President, Iran has stunned its rivals, particularly the United States, by unveiling an advanced underground naval missile base, reportedly built at a depth of over 500 meters below ground. Footage released on IRGC-owned media and Iran’s state-run TV channels on Saturday showed dozens of attack boats equipped with missiles in the serpentine underground naval base.
While the exact location of the base has not been disclosed, it is believed that the underground base lies somewhere in Iran’s strategic southern waters including the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. As per a state-owned media report, the base lies at a depth of 500 meters below ground, and has been developed to boost Iran’s naval capabilities in these strategic waterways.
According to the report, the missile-equipped boats shown in the video are capable of decimating US warships and destroyers in the region. In the video, General Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), is shown visiting the naval base accompanied by IRGC’s navy chief, Rear Admiral AlirezaTangsiri.

Hamas Tries to Show It’s Back in Charge of Gaza
By Adam Rasgon
Jan. 19, 2025
As the cease-fire in Gaza was coming into effect on Sunday, masked gunmen, crowded into white pickup trucks, paraded through the streets of Gaza while supporters chanted the name of Hamas’s military wing. By sending its fighters out in an unmistakable show of force, Hamas was trying to deliver an unequivocal message to Palestinians in Gaza, to Israel and to the international community: that despite heavy losses during the war among Hamas’s fighters, police officers, political leaders and government administrators, it remains the dominant Palestinian power in Gaza.
“The message is that Hamas is ‘the day after’ for the war,” said Ibrahim Madhoun, an analyst close to Hamas based in Turkey, using a phrase that refers to the future administration of Gaza.
On Sunday, the Hamas-run government media office announced that thousands of police officers were beginning to deploy throughout the territory to “preserve security and order.” Government ministries and institutions, the media office said, were prepared to start working “according to the government plan to implement all the measures that guarantee bringing back normal life.”
At the Nasser Medical Complex in the southern city of Khan Younis, at least three uniformed police officers were standing as the Palestinian national anthem played in the background, according to a video posted on social media and verified by The New York Times.

Israel releases 90 Palestinian prisoners after 3 hostages returned from Gaza City
By: Devanshe Pandey
Jan 20, 2025
Israel on Monday freed 90 Palestinian prisoners and detainees, in exchange of three Israeli hostages released from Hamas captivity. Buses carrying freed Palestinian prisoners out of Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank were met by huge crowds cheering and waving flags. As per the list provided by the Palestinian Authority's Commission for Prisoners' Affairs, all of those released were women or minors.
Gaza ceasefire is finally coming to force suspending a 15-month-old war that has devastated the Gaza Strip and inflamed the Middle East. The first phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, involves Hamas gradually releasing 33 Israeli hostages held in the Palestinian enclave over the next six weeks in exchange for Israel releasing nearly 2,000 prisoners and detainees from the West Bank and Gaza.
Of the 90 detainees who were released today, 69 were women, one minor. eight male minors, and 12 men. Israel detained all of the people on the list for what it said were offences related to the country's security, from throwing stones to more serious accusations such as attempt to murder.
The most prominent of the detainees being freed is Khalida Jarrar, 62, a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP, a secular Leftist faction that was involved in hijackings and other attacks against Israel in the 1970s but has scaled back its militant activities in recent years.
Since her arrest in December 2023, Jarrar was held under indefinitely renewable six-month administrative detention orders, a practice denounced by human rights groups as a violation of international law.

Far-right ally of Netanyahu quits government over Gaza ceasefire deal
January 19, 2025
The party of Israel's hard-line National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir says its Cabinet ministers submitted their resignations from the government on Sunday in opposition to the Gaza ceasefire deal.
The departure of the Jewish Power party from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government does not bring down the coalition or affect the ceasefire. But Ben-Gvir's departure destabilises the coalition.
AFP reported that in a statement, Jewish Power called the ceasefire deal a “capitulation to Hamas” and denounced what it called the “release of hundreds of murderers” and the “renouncing of the (Israeli military’s) achievements in the war” in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu retains a slim majority in the Israeli parliament despite their resignation.

Delhi Elections: Delhi’s Bengali Muslims Have Had To Give Proof Of Their Citizenship To The Police
Abhik Deb
20-01-2025
“Anyone who speaks Bangla is suspected to be a Bangladeshi,” Anisur Rahman, a 44-year-old garment seller, said with a hint of sarcasm. For over 20 years, Rahman has been a resident of Bangali Basti – a slum of nearly 1,500 shanties located in a corner of the Vasant Kunj locality in Delhi.
Like Rahman, the majority of the residents of the slum hail from the north Bengal districts of Cooch Behar and Alipurduar. Over the last few weeks, they have had to give proof of their citizenship to the police. Twice since the last week of December, the police have conducted drives in Bangali Basti to check documents like Aadhaar card, voter ID card and ration card of those living in the slum.
“The police even went to my village in Cooch Behar to check if the address on my Aadhaar card was genuine,” a woman who requested anonymity, told Scroll.
The police action in Bangali Basti of Vasant Kunj is not an isolated affair. Since December, the Delhi Police have been conducting these drives in many Bengali Muslim-dominated localities on orders given by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. On December 10, Saxena had directed the Delhi chief secretary and police commissioner to launch a two-month drive to identify and take action against “illegal immigrants from Bangladesh” living in the national capital.
With the Delhi Assembly elections to be held on February 5, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party have raised the matter as an election issue. Both parties have blamed each other for allowing undocumented Bangladeshis in the national capital.
The political rhetoric and the police action have left many Bengalis who have migrated to Delhi in the danger of being branded as “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants”. Across two localities, both called Bangali Basti – the Vasant Kunj slum and a colony in North West Delhi’s Jahangirpuri – Scroll witnessed resentment and anger among the residents.
After the Delhi lieutenant governor ordered a drive to identify undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants, media reports said the directive had been given on demands made by a delegation of Muslim clerics. The reports, however, did not name any cleric. The official website and the X handle of the lieutenant governor also do not have any details about the meeting.
Mohammad Hakimuddin Qasmi, the general secretary of Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, told Scroll that nobody from his organisation was part of the said delegation.
Nonetheless, the police were prompt to act on the lieutenant governor’s directive. By the first week of January, the police had questioned over 5,000 people and screened their documents. The police have also deported around 30 persons back to Bangladesh for allegedly staying illegally in India, according to media reports. The Delhi Department of Education has also asked schools to inform the police and other authorities in case of any doubts over a student’s citizenship status.

Saif Ali Khan Stabbed: 2 Lawyers Jostled To Represent Attacker Mohammad Islam, Finally MagistrateHad To Intervene
January 20, 2025
The Bandra Holiday Court in Mumbai witnessed dramatic scenes on Sunday as two lawyers jostled in courtroom to represent the attacker, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case. Finally, the magistrate had to intervene to bring the focus back to trial.
Mumbai police arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, the suspect in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case from Thane and he was produced in the court on Sunday. The police sought custody of the accused for further probe and to ascertain the motive behind the attack. However, while Shehzad was made to stand in the box meant for the accused in the back end of the courtroom, the court witnessed dramatic scenes as two lawyers came forward claiming to represent the accused.
When Shehzad was presented in court, the magistrate asked if he had any complaints against the police to which Shehzad replied in the negative, PTI reported. However, when he was taken to the box, a lawyer came forward claiming to be appearing for the accused. While Shehzad was about to sign the ‘vakalatamana' (legal document authorising a lawyer to appear in a case), another lawyer jostled his way to the box and took Shehzad's signature on his vakalatamana, creating confusion in the courtroom about who would appear for the accused.

Rohingya Muslims, including minors, arrested in Bengal, wanted to go to Kashmir
Rajesh Saha
Jan 19, 2025
Three Rohingya Muslims, including two minor girls and a 31-year-old man, were arrested in Kolkata on Saturday morning for entering India illegally and attempting to travel to Kashmir. The arrests have raised concerns over a possible human trafficking racket operating in the region.
The incident unfolded when a ticket examiner spotted the trio roaming suspiciously across multiple platforms at the Sealdah railway station on Friday night. Unable to produce valid tickets, they were handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and later to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for further investigation.
During questioning, the 31-year-old identified himself as Abdul Rahman and admitted to entering India illegally from Bangladesh five to six years ago.
He has been residing in Kashmir, where he works as a labourer. The two minors, aged around 12, were reportedly being taken to Kashmir by Abdul under the pretext of work. All three are originally from Myanmar's Rakhine State but had been living in a refugee camp in Bangladesh before crossing the India-Bangladesh border to enter India illegally.

Muslim Man Converts To Hinduism To Marry Girlfriend Of 10 Years
January 20, 2025
A 34-year-old Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti converted to Hinduism to marry his girlfriend with whom he had an affair for the past 10 years, changing his name from Saddam to Shivshankar, police said on Monday.
SHO of Kotwali police station Devendra Singh said that three days ago, the woman had lodged a case against Saddam and his family members in the police station for rape, forcing her to have an abortion, raping her on the pretext of marriage and threatening to kill her.
But on Sunday night, Saddam and the girl got married in a temple in the city market as per Hindu customs and Saddam changed his name to Shivshankar Soni.
According to the police, Saddam Hussain, a resident of Nagar Bazaar, was in a love affair with a woman (about 30 years old) from the same village for about 10 years.
Since both of them belonged to different religions, marriage was not possible. The girl pressured him into marriage many times, but Saddam’s family was not ready to accept her, he said.

‘British Muslims fear Musk influence and emboldened Islamophobia under Trump’
Aine Fox
20-01-2025
Young British Muslims are worried about the influence of Elon Musk and whether the Donald Trump presidency in the US might see Islamophobia “emboldened”, the outgoing leader of the UK’s largest Muslim umbrella organisation said.
In her final days as secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), Zara Mohammed, the first woman and youngest person to hold the role, warned of a “deeply challenging time” for her community.
Mr Musk, the billionaire owner of Tesla and SpaceX, is a close ally of Mr Trump, who will be inaugurated for his second presidential term on Monday.
Mr Musk is expected to have a key role in the political administration in the US, and has been engaging in controversial commentary online regarding UK politics recently, including piling pressure on the Prime Minister to order an inquiry into grooming gangs.
In an interview with the PA news agency before she steps down after her four-year term as MCB leader, Ms Mohammed said the “normalisation of figures on the far-right” is concerning.

Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, criticized the country’s policy toward Taliban just one day before his inauguration. He stated that the U.S. would condition the transfer of money to Afghanistan on the return of American military equipment.
Trump, who arrived in Washington late on Saturday for the inauguration ceremony, delivered his final speech before the event on Sunday. In this address, he sharply criticized the U.S. government’s policy toward Afghanistan.
He called the administration of Joe Biden, the current U.S. president, “incompetent” and added, “They, the Biden administration, handed over a large portion of U.S. military equipment to the enemy (the Taliban). And do you know that we were paying billions of dollars to Afghanistan annually?”

Iran deports over 3,000 Afghan refugees in one day: Norwegian Refugee Council
By Fidel Rahmati
January 19, 2025
Jan Egeland, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, has announced that Iran deported over 3,000 Afghan refugees in a single day. He warned that these individuals have no resources to restart their lives in Afghanistan, a country where millions are already in desperate need of assistance.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on January 19, Jan Egeland stated that the deported individuals crossed into Afghanistan through the Islam Qala border.
Egeland further explained that the Norwegian Refugee Council and other organizations are providing assistance and counseling to the deported migrants at the border. However, many of the migrants have told him that they have nothing to return to in Afghanistan and are forced to start over from scratch in a country where 22 million people are already in need of humanitarian aid.

By Joy Pillai
January 20, 2025
Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Home Minister, retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, made an aggressive statement following tensions at the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Malda. He stated that his country’s borders are fully secure and that no one can enter Bangladesh from the other side. Assuring that the Bangladesh Border Guard remains vigilant, he said their blood may be shed, but the borders of the country will remain secure.
“As long as we are alive, no one can violate our borders. Our blood may be shed, but the borders will remain secure,” Chowdhury said.
A day earlier, tensions were witnessed at the India-Bangladesh border in Malda where a group of Bangladeshi nationals reportedly tried to cross into India and allegedly tried to harvest and steal crops belonging to Indian farmers. Local farmers confronted them and forced them to retreat. Witnesses claimed that some Bangladeshis carried weapons and pelted stones. The Border Security Force (BSF) later intervened and defused the situation.

11 promises on President Trump's to-do list on his 1st day back in White House
Jan 19, 2025
From ending Russia-Ukraine war to launching mass deportations, it's going to be the busiest day in US Presidential history as one looks at the promises made by Donald Trump to be kept on the very first day of assuming office.
The critics are on their toes, ready to analyze the ticks and crosses from Trump's to-do list as the inauguration day on Monday comes to an end.
Trump, however, seems to exude confidence in his second term at the office. “Your head will spin when you see what’s going to happen,” he said of Day 1.
“I’ll get the war with Ukraine and Russia ended. If I’m president-elect, I’ll get it done before even becoming president,” he told Fox News Channel.
Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said that that Trump would bring the Russian and Ukrainian leaders to the negotiating table on Day 1. However, this does not align with his promise to end the war before Monday.

Why will Trump take his oath on two Bibles during his swearing-in ceremony?
Jan 19, 2025
Donald Trump will have his hand on two Bibles during the swearing-in ceremony on Monday. One will be the Lincoln Bible which was first used in 1861 to swear in the 16th US president, but the other will have some emotional significance. The other Bible was the one given to Trump by his mother in 1955 to mark his Sunday Church Primary School graduation at First Presbyterian Church, in Jamaica, New York.
On the front cover of the Bible, Trump's name is embossed on the lower portion. Inside the cover, there are signatures of church officials and other details of when it was presented to him.
The Lincoln Bible has been used three times since, by President Barack Obama at each of his inaugurations and by Donald Trump in 2017.
In 2013, Obama too took the oath of office keeping his hands on two Bibles -- one was owned by Martin Luther King Jr and the other was the Lincoln Bible.

Jan 20, 2025
For the first time in US history, foreign leaders will attend a presidential inauguration, marking a crucial moment in nation's political tradition of the peaceful transfer of power.
President-elect Donald Trump has invited a diverse array of global figures to his swearing-in ceremony, including leaders such as Argentina's president Javier Milei and Italian Prime Minister GiorgiaMeloni.
According to state department records dating back to 1874, no foreign leader has ever participated in a US transfer-of-power ceremony. In addition to Trump's international guests, the usual cluster of American lawmakers, officials, and former presidents: Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden - are expected to attend. Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently faced Trump as Democrat rival in the 2024 presidential election, will also be present.

TikTok restores service in US after Donald Trump pledges a reprieve
Jan 19 2025
TikTok said on Sunday that it was restoring services in the United States after Donald Trump pledged earlier in the day to give the video app a reprieve on its US ban.
Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social that, after taking office on Monday, he would sign an executive order allowing the Chinese-owned video app additional time to find a buyer before facing a total shutdown, and proposing that the US or an American firm take a 50 per cent ownership stake.
“By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to say (sic) up,” Trump said. “Without US approval, there is no TikTok. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars – maybe trillions.”
Congress passed a law in April mandating its owner, ByteDance, either to sell to a non-Chinese company or face a total shutdown. The app chose the shutdown after the US supreme court ruled to uphold the ban on Friday.
“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the US,” stated a pop-up message to US users on TikTok on Saturday night, which came as something of a surprise, given that the law only required app stores to remove it. “Unfortunately that means you can’t use TikTok for now.”

PTI to challenge £190m case ruling tomorrow
Ikram Junaidi
January 20, 2025
ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday announced its intention to challenge the decision in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case in the high court tomorrow (Tuesday), with PTI leader Salman Akram Raja alleging that the funds were misinterpreted by the current government, claiming they were to be deposited into property tycoon Malik Riaz’s account, not returned to the state.
Speaking at a news conference at KP House, Mr Raja revealed that nine accounts of Malik Riaz’s family were seized over suspicious transactions in the United Kingdom and one of the transactions was with Hasan Nawaz, son of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.
On the other hand, there was an allegation that 16,000 acres of land were given to Malik Riaz, and the Supreme Court gave a verdict that the property tycoon had to pay Rs460 billion to the Malir Development Authority (MDA).
UK authorities then decided to send the amount to the Supreme Court and directed the Malik Riaz family to leave the United Kingdom, he said.
He claimed that the UK authorities did not find any crime in it and just directed the family to leave the country in light of the Supreme Court’s verdict.
It was a bilateral agreement between the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK and Ali Malik, and it was decided that the amount would be deposited in the Supreme Court’s account. There was a sentence in the press release issued by the NCA that the amount would be returned to the state of Pakistan.
It was claimed that the money had to be returned to the state, which was totally wrong, and the fact was that the amount had to be submitted in the account of the Supreme Court, he said.
As the NCA requested that the agreement not be disclosed, approval was obtained from the federal cabinet through sealed envelopes. As Malik Riaz got the Sindh land free of cost, so that money has to be given to the state through the Supreme Court.

Operation to rid Kurram of ‘spoilers’ launched
Umer Farooq
January 20, 2025
PESHAWAR/ KURRAM: In order to rid restive Kurram of miscreants and secure the highway connecting the district with other parts of the country, a security operation has started in the Bagan area of the tribal district, officials said on Sunday.
“The forces have begun the operation to sanitise the area in and around Bagan by taking over check posts and destroying bunkers along the route,” sources privy to the details of the operation said.
According to officials, the law enforcement agencies’ personnel were moving into the villages, but the miscreants had already fled and evacuations were already underway from the residential areas. “The plan is to secure the road in the next couple of days to allow the trucks to start moving (between Kurram and Peshawar),” they said.
The law enforcers had taken control of the bunkers on the mountains and a search operation was expected during the night, officials said, adding that security forces were deployed in lower Kurram and the operation would be carried out in four villages.
During a news conference held in Kurram on Sunday, Regional Police Officer Abbas Majeed Marwat said that the first convoy left successfully for Parachinar, followed by a second convoy. He said locals had committed that the third convoy should carry more supplies and they would support it, but the attack took place that resulted in several deaths.

Fazl opposes use of force to solve Kurram dispute
Muhammad Jamal Hoti
January 20, 2025
MARDAN: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has demanded a solution to the dispute between warring groups in Kurram through the jirga system (a traditional dispute resolution mechanism used in tribal communities), saying that the use of force or imposition of a one-sided decision could further deteriorate the fragile situation in the volatile tribal district.
“Disputed issues have been resolved neither by force nor by one sided decisions. We believe in jirga system. That is why the issue of Kurram should be resolved through a jirga comprising credible and reliable personalities. We prefer jirga in case of resolving issues and disputes as it has the ability to solve problems and issues in a better way,” said the JUI-F chief while talking to media persons here in Mardan on Sunday.
The Maulana expressed these views in reference to the government decision about limited ‘counterterrorism operation’ in some villages of Lower Kurram, after attending a religious programme at Jamia Islamia Babuzai in Katlang tehsil of Mardan district.

‘Five years is too long’: Chief Secretary Shamsul Azri suggests job rotation for civil service counter staff
By Muhammad Yusry
20 Jan 2025
PUTRAJAYA, Jan 20 — Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar today called for a job rotation policy for civil servants stationed at service counters for over five years.
“In my opinion, if we have been serving at the counter for more than five years, we should be transferred. Five years sitting at the counter is too long and not appropriate.
“I urge the Public Service Department (JPA) to look into this matter, our staff and officers who have been at the counter for over five years should undergo job rotation,” he said in his 2025 address at the Puspanitapuri building, here.
“If someone stays at the counter for too long, when it comes time to take the promotion exam, many questions can’t be answered because you focus only on one job and don’t get involved in real operations. This can make you very stressed.
