25th December 2023
ALIGARH: A wall of a mosque was
vandalised in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh, with religious slogans written on it.
The incident was caught on camera and went viral on social media.
The incident took place at the Delhi
Gate intersection in Aligarh, where religious slogans were written on the walls
of a mosque on Saturday.
Following this, a delegation from the
Samajwadi Party (SP) met Superintendent of Police (City) Mrigank Shekhar Pathak
and submitted a formal complaint regarding the matter, urging strong action
against the miscreants responsible for disturbing communal peace.
Samajwadi Party leader Manoj Yadav, who
was part of the delegation, alleged that certain anti-social elements had
tarnished the city's atmosphere by engaging in such activities. He threatened
to hold a protest if immediate action was not taken against the miscreants.
Pathak said that police promptly arrived
at the scene and a formal report has been filed. The individuals involved have
been identified from video footage.
The official assured that swift action
would be taken against those involved.

Children In Afghanistan At Risk Of
Kidnapping, Murder, Abuse, and Sexual Violence: UN Report
Photo: The
Khaama Press

Fidel Rahmati
December 24, 2023
The latest report from the
Secretary-General of the United Nations on the situation of children in
Afghanistan reveals that alongside the deprivation of millions of girls from
education, thousands of cases of violence against children have been recorded
from January 2021 to December 2022, including kidnapping, murder, abuse, and
sexual assault of children.
This report covers the period from
January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2022, during which the Taliban was in power in
Afghanistan. As a result of this political change and regime shift, millions of
girls were deprived of education, thousands of children turned to work due to
widespread poverty, and the crisis of migration and fear of living under the
rule of the Taliban created the grounds for widespread violation of children’s
rights.
The sixth report of the Secretary-General
of the United Nations on the situation of children in Afghanistan and armed
violence is based on Security Council Resolution 1612 and was published on
Saturday, December 23. The Taliban administration, the Islamic Party led by
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, and the Khorasan branch of ISIS are among the groups that
have committed violations of children’s rights in Afghanistan and are
officially listed as violators of children’s rights. These Islamist groups are
listed as violators of children’s rights in Afghanistan due to recruiting,
abusing, killing, and facilitating sexual assault against children.
The findings of the United Nations
indicate that from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2022, more than 4,519 cases
of violence against children were recorded in Afghanistan, and a total of 3,545
children aged a few months to 17 years old were victims of violence during this
period.
Research from this period shows that
during the mentioned timeframe, at least 257 cases of recruitment and abuse of
children took place in Afghanistan, 3,248 children were killed and injured, and
21 cases of sexual violence against children were also part of the documented
reports alongside 33 cases of kidnapping, 211 cases of vulnerability during
attacks on health centers and schools, and 749 cases of deprivation from access
to humanitarian and welfare services.
Virginia Gamba, the Special
Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Children and
Armed Conflict, has stated that the restrictions imposed by the Taliban have
significantly contributed to the increase in violations of children’s rights.
According to her, “Millions of girls
have been prevented from going to schools. This, along with harmful social
norms and traditional practices, has exposed many girls to severe forms of
violence and abusive behaviours, including honour killings, early marriages,
domestic violence, and sexual violence.”

Palestinians Feel 'No Joy' As Israel Bombs
Gaza On Christmas
The war
broke out when Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7.
-----
25th December 2023
JERUSALEM: Palestinians said they felt
"no joy" this Christmas as Israel bombed Gaza on Monday, with no end
in sight to the war that Hamas says has claimed more than 20,000 lives.
Festivities were effectively scrapped in
the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem, revered as the birthplace of Jesus
Christ, with few worshippers or tourists on the usually packed streets.
In the besieged Gaza Strip, the
Hamas-run ministry of health said early Monday Israeli strikes had killed at
least 18 people in the southern city of Khan Yunis, the centre of recent
fighting.
At a hospital in the city, Fadi Sayegh
-- whose family has previously received permits to travel to Bethlehem for
celebrations -- said he would not be celebrating Christmas this year.
"There is no joy. No Christmas
tree, no decorations, no family dinner, no celebrations," he said while
undergoing dialysis. "I pray for this war to be over soon."
Sister Nabila Salah from the Catholic
Holy Church in Gaza -- where two Christian women were killed by an Israeli
sniper earlier this month according to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem --
struck a sombre tone.
"All Christmas celebrations have
been cancelled," she told AFP. "How do we celebrate when we are...
hearing the sound of tanks and bombardment instead of the ringing of
bells?"
The war broke out when Hamas fighters
attacked southern Israel on October 7 and killed about 1,140 people, mostly
civilians, and seized 250 hostages, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli
figures.
Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas in
response and its military campaign, which has included massive aerial
bombardment. The campaign has killed 20,424 people, mostly women and children,
according to Gaza's health ministry.
Pope Francis kicked off global Christmas
celebrations on Sunday with a call for peace.
"Our heart goes to Gaza, to all
people in Gaza but a special attention to our Christian community in Gaza who
is suffering," the Catholic leader said.
Christmas eve strike
Just ahead of Christmas, the Hamas-run
health ministry said at least 70 people were killed in an Israeli air strike on
Sunday at the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza.
Health ministry spokesman Ashraf
al-Qudra said the "toll is likely to rise" as many families were
thought to be in the area at the time of the strike.
In a separate incident, the ministry
said 10 members of one family were killed in an Israeli strike on their house
in the Jabalia camp in northern Gaza.
AFP was unable to independently verify
either toll.
Vast areas of Gaza lie in ruins and its
2.4 million people have endured dire shortages of water, food, fuel and
medicine due to an Israeli siege, alleviated only by the limited arrival of aid
trucks.
Eighty per cent of Gazans have been
displaced, according to the UN, many fleeing south and now shielding against
the winter cold in makeshift tents.
The head of the UN refugee agency,
Filippo Grandi, called for an end to the suffering.
"A humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza
is the only way forward," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "War
defies logic and humanity, and prepares a future of more hatred and less
peace."
World Health Organization chief Tedros
Adhanom Ghebreyesus also renewed calls for a ceasefire, saying: "The
decimation of the Gaza health system is a tragedy."
'No choice'
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu said Sunday the war was exacting a "very heavy price", as
the death toll of soldiers killed in the conflict continued to mount.
"But we have no choice but to keep
fighting," he said, adding: "This will be a long war."
The army said Monday two more soldiers
had been killed, taking to 17 the number of troops killed since Friday and 156
since Israel’s ground assault began on October 27.
Israeli military spokesman Jonathan
Conricus indicated that forces were close to gaining control in northern Gaza
and that now "we focus our efforts against Hamas in southern Gaza".
Two freed detainees and a medic said Sunday
that Palestinians held by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip had suffered
torture, a charged denied by the military.
The two men were among hundreds detained
by Israeli forces over alleged links with Hamas during Israel's ground
offensive.
About 20 men released from Israeli
custody "have bruises and marks of blows on their bodies", Marwan
al-Hams, hospital director in the southern city of Rafah, told AFP.

U.K. ‘Lacks’ Knowledge of Islamist
Extremism: Counter-Extremism Watchdog Report
Dame Sara
Khan, a former Home Office extremism tsar, has warned that official proposals
to tackle extremism in Britain have been ‘sitting on a shelf gathering dust’
CREDIT: Rii Schroer

24 DECEMBER 2023
The U.K.’s understanding of Islamist
extremism has “significant gaps” as research disproportionately focuses on the
far-Right, an official counter-extremism watchdog report has warned. The
Telegraph has the story.
The study, for the Commission for
Countering Extremism, revealed that Islamist extremists are using legal threats
to help deter researchers from writing about them.
It said research projects funded by
millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money appeared to be “skewed towards studies
of extremism in general, as well as towards studies of the far-Right”, warning
that the Islamist movement in the U.K. had been “systematically
under-researched”.
Among the reasons it gave for an
apparent skewing of research towards Right-wing extremism was a “litigative
onslaught” researchers suggested they faced if they wrote about specific
individuals and groups, “particularly in the Islamist sphere”.
The document, published on the gov.uk
website, stated: “As a result of systemic problems both in studying extremism
and in communicating the findings of such study, there are likely to be
substantial gaps in the knowledge base around extremism in the U.K.
“The skew towards studies of Right-wing
extremism, and away from studies of Islamism (especially in a contemporary U.K.
context), could… perhaps be seen as problematic, given that Islamist extremism
proportionally represents a far greater terror threat in the U.K.”
The report will add to concern about the
extent to which the U.K. is equipped to deal with rising levels of extremism
stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On Christmas Eve, Pope Francis Laments
‘Futile’ War In Holy Land
December 24, 2023
VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis on Sunday
lamented that Jesus’ message of peace was being drowned out by the “futile
logic of war” in the very land where he was born, as the pontiff led the
world’s Roman Catholics into Christmas.
Francis, celebrating the 11th Christmas
of his pontificate, presided at a solemn Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter’s
Basilica and spoke of the conflict in the Holy Land in his homily.
“Tonight, our hearts are in Bethlehem,
where the Prince of Peace is once more rejected by the futile logic of war, by
the clash of arms that even today prevents him from finding room in the world,”
Francis said.
The 87-year-old pontiff spoke hours
after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to fight deeper into the
Palestinian enclave of Gaza after his troops endured one of the worst days of
losses of their ground war.
And in the city where Jesus was born,
Palestinian Minister of Tourism, Rula Ma’ayah, said: “Bethlehem is celebrating
Christmas with sadness and sorrow because of what’s happening in Gaza and in
all the West Bank, all Palestinian territories.”
At the papal Mass for 6,500 people in
St. Peter’s Basilica and more watching on screens in the square outside, Francis
said the real message of Christmas is peace and love, urging people not to be
obsessed with worldly success and the “idolatry of consumerism.”
He spoke of “the all-too-human thread
that runs through history: the quest for worldly power and might, fame and
glory, which measures everything in terms of success, results, numbers and
figures, a world obsessed with achievement.”
Francis said that while many might find
it hard to celebrate Christmas in “this world that is so judgmental and
unforgiving,” they should try to remember what happened on the first Christmas.
“Tonight, love changes history,” he
said.
Francis has made numerous appeals for a
cease-fire in the conflict raging in Gaza and has called for the release of all
hostages held by Palestinian militant groups.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad, both sworn to
Israel’s destruction, are still believed to be holding more than 100 hostages
from among 240 they captured during their Oct. 7 rampage through Israeli towns,
when they killed 1,200 people.
Since then, Israel has besieged the Gaza
Strip and laid much of it to waste, with more than 20,400 people confirmed
killed, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run authorities, and thousands more believed
dead under the rubble. The vast majority of the 2.3 million Gazans have been driven
from their homes and the United Nations says conditions are catastrophic.
At noon (1100 GMT) on Monday, Francis
will deliver his Christmas Day “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world)
message and blessing.

7 booked for bursting firecrackers in

Dec 25, 2023
Seven Hindu workers booked for bursting
crackers in front of a mosque and assaulting police during a procession in
Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka.
Seven workers from the Hindu community
were booked for bursting crackers in front of a mosque and assaulting police
personnel during the Datta Maladhari procession in Chikkamagaluru district,
police officers familiar with the matter said on Sunday.
The Datta Mala procession was organised
by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Aldur town on Saturday to mark the
Dattatreya Jayanthi celebrations. According to officials, the organisers were
permitted to carry out the procession peacefully. However, on Saturday night,
the Datta Maladharis, while taking out the procession, attempted to burst
crackers in front of Jamia mosque.

Despite clear directives from the police
to refrain from using fireworks near the mosque, a group of activists
reportedly attempted to burst crackers and engaged in a heated confrontation.
When officers attempted to maintain order, they allegedly faced an attack from
the enraged group, leaving some with injuries. The escalating situation
prompted the authorities to register an FIR against seven individuals on
charges of attempted assault and obstructing police duty. The injured officials
were admitted and discharged from the hospital.
It is reported that Union minister
Shobha Karandlaje and former minister CT Ravi were also present in the
procession.
“While taking out a peaceful procession
in front of the mosque at around 8 pm, our personnel warned the activists not
to burst any crackers,” Aldur circle inspector M Sathyanarayana said.
He said that despite the warning, a few
workers proceeded to burst crackers. Our personnel, including Aldur
sub-inspector Akshitha, tried to stop them, but they burst crackers by pushing
away the police. We have registered a case against seven persons, namely
Nagaraja, Sathish, Bannur Naveen, Tudukuru Manja, Prajwal, Manja Haandi, Sunil
Haandi, and others under sections 286 (negligent conduct with respect to
explosive substance), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant to
deter duty), 353 (criminal force to deter a public servant to discharge his
duty), and 149 (common object with unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code
(IPC).
He said deputy SP HM Shailendra, PSI
Akshitha, and head constable JK Chandrappa sustained minor burn injuries while
attempting to defuse crackers. He said no arrests have been made so far, and
further investigation is underway.
The 10-day Datta Jayanthi celebrations
in Dattha peetha Bababudangiri are being held from December 17 to 26. Thousands
of devotees participate in the annual celebration. Anusuya Jayanti was held on
December 24. A grand Shobha Yatra will be taken out in Chikkamagaluru city on
December 25, and Dattapaduke darshan will be held on December 26”.

J-K security situation not grim, some
cases of targeted killings taken place: BJP
24th December 2023
Srinagar: Condemning the fatal attack on
a former police officer inside a mosque in Baramulla district, the BJP said on
Sunday the security situation is not grim in Jammu and Kashmir even though
there are some cases of targeted killings.
Ashok Koul, the BJP’s general secretary
(Organisation, J-K), said killing a police officer who has served the nation
for 40 years is cowardly and condemnable. “I am sure the government will crush
it.”
He added, “It is not a grim security
situation. Yes, target killings are taking place, but, the situation is not
like what it was in 2016-17, or before that in 2010 or how the situation was
from 1990.
“The situation is better, but incidents
have taken place which should not. I am sure the government will crush it,”
BJP’s general secretary, organisation, J-K, Ashok Koul, told reporters here.
Condemning the killing of former SSP
Mohammad Shafi Mir, who was shot inside a mosque in Baramulla district early
Sunday morning, Koul said the neighbouring country would be given a befitting
reply for such acts.
“We condemn these target killings. No
society can tolerate it. Killing a police officer who has served the nation for
40 years is cowardly and condemnable. We condemn these actions of the
neighbouring country and will give a befitting reply to it,” the BJP leader
said.

J&K seat sharing: Will abide by
INDIA bloc’s decision, says Farooq Abdullah
24th December 2023
Jammu: National Conference chief Farooq
Abdullah on Sunday said his party would abide by the decision of the INDIA
alliance on seat sharing in Jammu and Kashmir for next year’s Lok Sabha
elections.
The former J-K chief minister asked why
the government was not holding local bodies elections when it was claiming that
peace had been restored in the Union Territory.
“We are part of the INDIA alliance and
will abide by its decision,” the National Conference (NC) leader told reporters
while replying to a query on the sidelines of a book release function here.
He was asked about seat-sharing among
parties in the Union Territory.
The NC and Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) are among the regional parties from J-K that are part of the opposition
bloc.
Abdullah said his message to the people
of Jammu and Kashmir is to remain poll-ready.
“We were ready for panchayat, DDC
(District Development Council) and even municipality elections this year.
Notice was issued but was withdrawn within five days as nobody knows what
happened and the elections were deliberately delayed.
“They are claiming normalcy but could
not hold an election. If an election can be held in Kargil, why was it not held
in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Abdullah said his party supports setting
up industries that benefit the people, create jobs and will be
environment-friendly.
“We do not want industries which spread
pollution We want progress and also desire that J-K moves forward. Our children
are unemployed,” he said.

Muttaqi Criticizes Dual Policy of World
for Palestine
Mitra Majeedy
December 24, 2023
The acting foreign minister, Amir Khan
Muttaqi, criticized the double standards of the international community
regarding the issue of Palestine, saying that the “world that talks of human
rights, human values, freedom and justice, is watching the brutal
massacre."
He made the remarks at a high-level
consultative conference on Palestine in Tehran.
Muttaqi also called on the Islamic World
to be united regarding the issue of Palestine, saying that the struggle of
Palestinians is “legitimate and legal.”
“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as
a guardian of Islamic values, calls on influential Islamic countries to play a
more effective role in putting an end to the killing of innocent Palestinian
people by the Zionist regime and holding the Zionist regime accountable,” he
said.
Muttaqi also indicated the situation in
Afghanistan, saying that the country is one of the victims of the world’s
contradiction.
“It is grotesque to see my country,
Afghanistan, being sanctioned by instrumentalizing human rights – when we are
taking steps towards security and stability following more than four decades of
foreign invasions!” he said.
The political analysts gave various
opinions in this regard.
“All Muslims are sad because the Islamic
countries have not played the role which they should have played,” said Wahid
Faqiri, a political analyst.
Al-Jazeera reported from the United
Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees which said it “cannot
deliver meaningful aid” under intense Israeli bombardments of Gaza after the UN
Security Council called for increased access.
On 7 October 2023, the latest conflict
between Israel and Hamas began. According to the reports, more than 20,000
Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, while Israel also announced that
130 military and around 1,200 civilians have been killed. In the meantime, 240
hostages are in Hamas’s custody.

Pakistan announces deportation of nearly
half a million Afghan migrants
Fidel Rahmati
December 24, 2023
Pakistani media report that 446,097
Afghan migrants, labeled as “illegal,” have been deported and returned to their
country from Pakistan.
The state-run Radio Pakistan reported on
Saturday, that the repatriation of “illegal” migrants, including Afghan nationals,
continues in a “dignified and secure” manner.
According to Pakistani media, on Friday,
1,159 Afghan migrants returned to their country.
Pakistani officials began forced
deportations of Afghan migrants on November 1st, during a severe humanitarian
crisis and harsh winter conditions. Despite pleas from the UN and the
international community, they continued with their plans, even intensifying the
deportations.
This is while Pakistan’s action to
deport 1.7 million Afghan migrants has led to a humanitarian crisis in the
country.
Previously, relief and human rights
organizations have warned about the difficult situation of the migrants
returning from Pakistan.
According to the statistics of the
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA),
about 23.7 million people in Afghanistan in 2024, which is more than half of
the population of the country, need humanitarian aid.

EU contributes €3 million to Afghanistan
relief efforts
December 24, 2023
The United Nations Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) reports a three million euro ($3.2
million) contribution from the European Union to the Afghanistan Humanitarian
Fund.
OCHA states the donated funds will
enable aid agencies to provide necessary assistance and protection to millions
in need across Afghanistan.
Throughout the year, the European Union
has been active in supporting Afghanistan, providing several aid packages to
address the ongoing crisis.
The humanitarian situation in
Afghanistan remains dire, with over half of the population in need of
assistance.
OCHA projects that a staggering $3
billion will be required for adequate aid in Afghanistan in the coming year.
For the year 2023, OCHA initially
requested $4.6 billion for Afghanistan aid efforts.
However, the full amount requested was
not met, leading to a significant funding shortfall for the country’s aid
needs.
Due to this funding gap, an estimated 10
million people in Afghanistan lost access to vital food aid from May to
November, as per OCHA’s reports.
The funding shortfall occurred amidst a
severe humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, exacerbated by the harsh winter
conditions. The situation is particularly critical as Afghan migrants face
forced deportation from neighboring Pakistan, adding to the already dire
circumstances.
This financial deficiency hinders the
delivery of essential aid and services, impacting the vulnerable populations
most in need. The convergence of the harsh winter, the humanitarian crisis, and
the influx of returning migrants creates an urgent and escalating need for
increased support and resources.

Dozens of Illegal Israeli Colonizers
Invade Al-Aqsa Mosque
DEC 24, 2023
Dozens of illegal Israeli colonizers, on
Sunday, invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, while many
Palestinian worshipers were denied entry.
Illegal Israeli colonizers invaded, on
Sunday, the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City of occupied Jerusalem,
while many Palestinian Muslims are restricted or prohibited from entering.
Dozens of Israeli settlers stormed the
Al-Aqsa Mosque under the full protection of the occupation police, and
performed Talmudic rituals, in a clear violation of the sanctity of the Islamic
holy site.
According to the Wadi Hilweh Information
Center in Jerusalem (Silwanic), 40 settlers stormed the yards of the Al-Aqsa
Mosque this morning, and another 32 invaded in the afternoon.
It added that only a small number of
worshipers were permitted to enter the mosque for the afternoon prayer.
Since the beginning of the aggression
against the Gaza Strip on October 7, Israeli police have been restricting the
number of Palestinian Muslims allowed in to the mosque, preventing entry based
on their age.
Silwanic also reported that the
occupation authorities handed Jerusalemite activist, Hanadi Al-Halawani, an
order barring her from the Al-Aqsa Mosque for a period of six months.

Israeli bombing is indiscriminate, targets
both Muslims and Christians, says Palestinian president
Awad Rjoob
24.12.2023
The Israeli bombing is indiscriminate
and targets both Muslims and Christians, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
said on Sunday while drawing parallels between Israel's intensified attacks on
the Gaza Strip and the 1948 Nakba.
"Christ's birthplace, Bethlehem
(Palestinian city in the West Bank), is experiencing unprecedented
sadness," President Abbas said, noting that the current Israeli aggression
reminds him of the 1948 Nakba.
The "Nakba" or
"Catastrophe" is the event in which nearly 800,000 Palestinians were
forcibly expelled from their homes and lands in 1948, following the
establishment of Israel.
On the occasion of the Christmas
holiday, Abbas said Israeli forces brutally bombed the Evangelical Baptist
Hospital, Orthodox Cultural Center, Greek Orthodox Church Hall, and Holy Family
Church, as well as mosques, schools, and hospitals in Gaza, and that
"these attacks did not differentiate between a Muslim and a Christian,"
according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.
“The occupation's aggression targeted
the Christian presence, all of our people, and our Islamic and Christian
sanctities in Jerusalem and the West Bank,” he added.
The Palestinian president has called for
Christmas to be "a time to stop the war and aggression against our people
in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory."
He stressed that the Palestinian people
will “continue fighting for a free, independent, and fully sovereign state."
Earlier, in a message of solidarity from
the heads of the Christian churches, Christian communities in Palestinian
territories announced that Christmas celebrations, including the lighting of
the Christmas tree, would be canceled due to the war in Gaza.
Since the attack by the Palestinian
resistance group Hamas, Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip, killing at least
20,424 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring 54,036 others,
according to health authorities in the enclave.
On Nov. 10, an Israeli Foreign Ministry
spokesman revised the official death toll of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, lowering
the figure to around 1,200 people, and since then, Tel Aviv has not provided
any additional information about the casualties.
The Israeli onslaught has left Gaza in
ruins with half of the coastal territory's housing stock damaged or destroyed,
and nearly 2 million people displaced within the densely-populated enclave amid
shortages of food and clean water.

Battle of Al-Aqsa storm needs unity of
all Palestinian groups
Dec 25, 2023
TEHRAN, Dec. 25 (MNA) – The Al-Aqsa
storm battle is a significant battle that demands the unity of all Palestinian
groups to realize the goals against the Israeli regime and its Western
supporters, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad's envoy to Iran says.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance
movement’s representative to Iran, Nasser Abu-Sharif made the comments in an
interview with Mehr News Agency on the sidelines of the Tehran International
Conference on Palestine on Saturday.
"Currently, the issue of ending the
Gaza war is the most important for us," Abu-Sharif said in response to a
question about the future of the war between Palestinian resistance and the
Israel regime.
Expulsion of occupiers from the Gaza
Strip, the release of the prisoners captived by the Zionist regime, and resolving
the issue of the West Bank are the least things that the Resistance is seeking
to realize at the moment, the envoy said.
As you know, the Al-Aqsa storm battle is
a significant battle that demands the unity of all Palestinian groups and the
unified struggles to realize the goals against the Israeli regime and its
Western supporters, Abu-Sharif concluded.

Realization of Palestinian rights ‘top
priority’ of Islamic world: Raisi
2023/12/24
In a telephone conversation with
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Saturday, President Raisi
congratulated his counterpart on his reelection, and said, “The Islamic
Republic of Iran welcomes the expansion of relations in various fields with its
friendly and Muslim neighbor, Egypt.”
President Raisi pointed out that today
the Islamic Republic’s assertion that the Zionist regime is a “cancerous tumor
and a serious threat to security, peace, and stability in the region” has been
proven to all.
The president said Iran was fully
prepared to utilize all capacities to stop the Israeli genocide in Gaza and
provide much-needed aid to the oppressed Palestinian people in the besieged
territory.
He also called on Egypt to do more to
that effect. “We expect Egypt to use all its capacities to halt the Zionist
regime's attacks on Gaza, begin humanitarian aid, and uphold the legitimate
rights of the Palestinian people.”
El-Sisi, for his part, appreciated
Iran’s foreign policy of strengthening relations with regional countries and
said Egypt was likewise ready to take practical steps toward resolving issues
between the two nations.

Palestinians recount ‘torture’ in
Israeli army custody
December 25, 2023
RAFAH, Palestinian Territories:
Palestinians held by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip had suffered torture,
two freed detainees and a medic said Sunday, a charged denied by the military.
The two men were among hundreds detained
by Israeli forces over alleged links with armed group Hamas during Israel’s
ongoing ground offensive in the besieged Hamas-run territory.
Israel vowed to defeat Hamas after a
deadly attack by militants on October 7, launching a relentless military
campaign in Gaza.

detained by the Israeli military during their operation in the northern Gaza
Strip and recently released through the Kerem Shalom crossing, await treatment
for their injuries at al-Najjar hospital in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on
December 24, 2023, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian
militant group Hamas. (AFP)
About 20 men released from Israeli
custody “have bruises and marks of blows on their bodies,” Marwan Al-Hams,
hospital director in the southern city of Rafah, told AFP.
Hams said the freed Palestinians were
admitted to Al-Najjar hospital upon their release.
The Israeli army rejected the claims,
saying detainees are “treated in accordance with international law.”
“While detained, the suspects are given
sufficient food and water and treated according to protocol,” the army told AFP
in a statement.

Nayef Ali, 22, said he was detained in
Gaza City’s eastern Zaitun suburb and later taken to an Israeli detention
facility, and showed cuts on his wrists and other parts of his body.
“They (Israeli troops) tied our hands
behind our backs for two days,” he said.
“We were not allowed to eat or drink,
neither were we allowed to use the toilet,” he added.
“There were only beatings and beatings.”
Ali said the detainees were put in an
area along the border with Israel where it was “freezing cold.”
“They threw cold water on us before
transferring us to a prison, where it was again torture and beatings.”
Khamis Al-Bardini, 55, also alleged
torture by Israeli soldiers, saying they poured “cold water on our heads
through the night” along with “beatings during the day.”
In recent weeks, the army has faced
international criticism after viral footage of detainees stripped down to their
underwear and blindfolded with their hands tied behind the backs.
The army has said it was investigating
the deaths of “terrorists in military detention centers” after Israeli media
reported that several detainees had died in custody.

Interfaith commemoration takes places in
London to mourn Gaza victims
Aysu Bicer and Behlul Cetinkaya
24.12.2023
In a display of solidarity, people from
three Abrahamic religions gathered at Gasholder Park in London to commemorate
and offer prayers for the lives lost in the Israeli attacks on Gaza.
Health workers, responding to the call
of "Health Workers for Palestine," organized the event.
"Christmas in Bethlehem is cancelled
this year. Instead, heads of Jerusalem churches asked for 'heartfelt prayers
for a just and lasting peace'," said the organizers.
"Showing solidarity across
different faiths a denominations, we commemorate lives lost to indiscriminate
civilian attacks and call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in
Gaza," they added.
Mona, a pediatric nurse and a Christian
by faith, said she finds it hard to celebrate Christmas while civilians are
suffering in the holy land.
She shared the staggering toll of the
conflict, noting that nearly 340 healthcare workers in Gaza lost their lives.
Additionally, 110 healthcare workers
were arbitrarily detained by Israel, with their fate remaining unknown, she
added.
Mona drew attention to the damage
inflicted on religious structures, with 176 mosques and four churches attacked,
leaving no place of worship safe in Gaza.
Aaron Keller, a Jewish activist from the
Anti-Occupation British Jews Platform (Na'amod), highlighted the dire situation
in Gaza, where over 20,000 civilians have been killed in Israeli attacks.
Keller emphasized the destructive impact
on societal memory due to the attacks and recited a Hebrew prayer for peace,
healing, and hope.
Simon Woodman, pastor of Bloomsbury
Central Baptist Church, recalled his visits to Palestine and the restrictions
on Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem.
"This year, the birthday of Jesus
cannot be celebrated in the birthplace of Jesus," he said, stressing that
speaking out against injustice in Gaza is crucial not only for the region but
for the concept of justice worldwide.
The event concluded with the recitation
of Surah Fatiha from the Quran for those who lost their lives, and a rendition
of the song "Be Brave, Friend, You Won't Walk Alone," originally sung
against the apartheid regime in South Africa, echoing the global call for
justice and solidarity.
As the participants dispersed, their
unified prayers and messages echoed a hopeful desire for peace and justice in
the troubled region, urging the international community to address the
humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since
a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, killing at least 20,424 Palestinians,
mostly women and children, and injuring 54,036 others, according to health

Macron condoles killing of 2
parishioners in Israeli attack on Latin church in Gaza
Ahmet Gencturk
24.12.2023
French President Emmanuel Macron on
Saturday condoled the killing of two parishioners in an Israeli sniper attack
at Holy Family Parish in Gaza last week.
In a phone call with Latin Catholic
Patriarch of Jerusalem Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Macron expressed “support and
solidarity with the Latin Catholic communities in the Holy Land,” according to
a statement by the French presidency.
He mentioned his “deep concern about the
dramatic situation in the Latin parish of Gaza, where hundreds of civilians of
all faiths have found refuge,” the statement said.
It added that Macron reaffirmed France’s
“loyalty to its commitments, and in particular, to the special role of
protection of a number of Christian communities, exercised through the
Consulate General of France in Jerusalem.”
"This responsibility, inherited
from history, will be fully assumed in the face of the contemporary risks
weighing on these communities,” Macron said.

Archbishop of York warns Israel against
seeking revenge, highlights escalating violence in Gaza
December 24, 2023
LONDON: The Archbishop of York has
cautioned Israel against embarking on a “journey of revenge” in his article for
The Telegraph on Saturday.
Rev. Stephen Cottrell emphasized the
dangers of “endless cycles of reprisals” and the fallacy of believing in the
principle of “might is right.”
Referencing the Chinese philosopher
Confucius, he said: “When you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves:
one for your enemy and one for yourself.”
His statement, while not directly
referencing the Israel-Gaza war, came as the UN voted on whether to call for a
ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel’s relentless bombardment has killed over 20,000
people, many of whom are civilians.
Cottrell also drew upon the words of
Martin Luther King, writing: “Violence begets violence, hate begets hate, and
toughness begets a greater toughness. It is all a descending spiral, and the
end is destruction — for everybody. Along the way of life, someone must have
enough sense and morality to cut off the chain of hate.”
Earlier in December, the House of
Bishops released a statement condemning the loss of Palestinian civilian lives
and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as unjustifiable.
Moreover, the archbishop expressed that
amid war’s chaos and a world plagued by political extremism and corruption,
divine guidance is still present. However, he warned that “anyone hoping for a
message combining instant justice with the extermination of tyranny and divine
retribution is likely to be disappointed.”

Police in Western Europe respond to
Islamist attack threats
24 Dec, 2023
Police in major cities across Western
Europe have taken extra security precautions, particularly around churches,
after receiving indications that an Islamist group was planning multiple
terrorist attacks during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
Threats were reported over the weekend
in Germany, where police searched the landmark Cologne Cathedral with
bomb-sniffing dogs, and Vienna, where Austrian authorities beefed up security
around churches and Christmas markets. Heightened security measures also were
reported in Madrid.
“Given that terrorist actors throughout
Europe are calling for attacks on Christian events, especially around December
24, the security authorities have taken the corresponding protection measures
in public spaces,” Austrian police said in a statement on Saturday.
Cologne’s police chief, Michael Esser,
said that although the threats identified in his city indicated an attack was
allegedly being plotted for New Year’s Eve, “we are from this evening doing
everything we can to ensure the safety of visitors of the cathedral on
Christmas Eve.” Worshipers attending the Christmas Eve mass on Sunday were
required to go through security screening before entering the cathedral.
Bild newspaper reported that special
forces in Vienna and Germany’s Saarland state had arrested terrorism suspects
in connection with the attack threats. Data storage devices were seized during
the arrests of three suspects in Vienna.
Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker thanked
police for their “quick and careful action.” She added, “We Cologne residents
will not allow ourselves to be intimidated by crazy terrorists. Our cathedral
has stood proudly in the heart of our city since 1248 and also embodies the
self-confidence of us Cologne residents. Everything is being done by the city
of Cologne and the police to protect the people of Cologne and our cathedral in
the next few days.”
Herbert Reul, interior minister for
Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia state, told Bild that the threat of terrorism
is higher than it has been “for a long time” during this year’s holiday season.
He emphasized that all possible precautions are being taken, and he urged
people to celebrate Christmas as they normally do. “Fear is the currency of
terrorists,” he said. “We mustn’t add value to them.”
Authorities in Western Europe and the US
have warned of rising terrorism threats triggered by the Israel-Hamas war. The
Spanish Interior Ministry announced earlier this month that it would be ramping
up security measures during the Christmas holiday season.
On Sunday, Spain’s National Police
posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of officers and police dogs standing
outside the iconic Cathedral Church of Saint Mary in Murcia. The accompanying
message told residents to “just worry about enjoying” the holiday, as police
would see to “the rest.”

Love for Jesus Can Bring Christians and
Muslims Together
Ibrahim Hooper
December 24, 2023
By Ibrahim Hooper
[Ibrahim Hooper is National
Communications Director for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic
Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties group. He may be
contacted at: ihooper@cair.com ]
“Behold! The angels said: ‘O Mary! God
giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the
son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and in (the company
of) those nearest to God.’”
Before searching for this quote in the
New Testament, you might first ask your Muslim co-worker, friend or neighbour
for a copy of the Quran, Islam’s revealed text. The quote is from verse 45 of
chapter 3 in the Quran.
It is well known, particularly in this
holiday season, that Christians follow the teachings of Jesus. What is less
well understood is that Muslims also love and revere Jesus as one of God’s
greatest messengers to humankind.
Other verses in the Quran, regarded by
Muslims as the direct word of God, state that Jesus was strengthened with the
“Holy Spirit” (2:87) and is a “sign for the whole world.” (21:91) His virgin
birth was confirmed when Mary is quoted as asking: “How can I have a son when
no man has ever touched me?” (3:47)
The Quran shows Jesus speaking from the
cradle and, with God’s permission, curing lepers and the blind. (5:110) God
also states in the Quran: “We gave (Jesus) the Gospel (Injeel) and put
compassion and mercy into the hearts of his followers.” (57:27)
As forces of hate in this country and
worldwide try to pull Muslims and Christians apart, we are in desperate need of
a unifying force that can bridge the widening gap of interfaith
misunderstanding and mistrust. That force could be the message of love, peace
and forgiveness taught by Jesus and accepted by followers of both faiths.
Christians and Muslims would do well to
consider another verse in the Quran reaffirming God’s eternal message of
spiritual unity: “Say ye: ‘We believe in God and the revelation given to us and
to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and
Jesus, and that given to (all) Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction
between any of them, and it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves.’” (2:136)
The Prophet Muhammad himself sought to
erase any distinctions between the message he taught and that taught by Jesus,
who he called God’s “spirit and word.” Prophet Muhammad said: “Both in this
world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all people to Jesus, the son of
Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but
their religion is one.”
When Muslims mention the Prophet
Muhammad, they always add the phrase “peace be upon him.” Christians may be
surprised to learn that the same phrase always follows a Muslim’s mention of
Jesus or that we believe Jesus will return to earth in the last days before the
final judgment. Disrespect toward Jesus, as we have seen all too often in our
society, is very offensive to Muslims.
Unfortunately, violent events and
hate-filled rhetoric around the world provide ample opportunity for promoting
religious hostility. And yes, Muslims and Christians do have some differing
perspectives on Jesus’ life and teachings. But his spiritual legacy offers an
alternative opportunity for people of faith to recognize their shared religious
heritage.
America’s Muslim community stands ready
to honor that legacy by building bridges of interfaith understanding and
challenging those who would divide our nation along religious or ethnic lines.
We have more in common than we think.

Far-right activist blasts Speaker Phelan
for being "pro-Muslim" in political mailer
POOJA SALHOTRA AND ROBERT DOWNEN
DEC. 24, 2023
A longtime Texas conservative activist
mailed what appeared to be a blatantly anti-Muslim holiday card to voters in
state House Speaker Dade Phelan’s legislative district, the latest political
volley in an ongoing feud between the Texas Republican Party’s far-right
faction and its more moderate wing.
Photos of the mailers circulated on
social media platform X two days before Christmas. The mailers sarcastically
wish constituents a “Happy Ramadan,” even though the Muslim holiday fell during
the spring this year. It includes photos of Phelan, who is Catholic, at an
event celebrating Ramadan with Muslims in the state Capitol earlier this year.
The card insinuates that the speaker is
Muslim. The event was hosted by state Rep. Suleman Lalani, D-Sugar Land, who
was one of the first two Muslims elected to the Texas Legislature along with
state Rep. Salman Bhojani last year.
“It’s preying on Islamophobic sentiments
that exist in some people’s minds,” said Bhojani, a Euless Democrat. “But in
Texas we should celebrate and protect religious practices.”
The cards were paid for by Cary
Cheshire, a longtime right-wing activist who was previously the vice president
of Empower Texans. Cheshire is currently the executive director for Texans For
Strong Borders, a right-wing group that has been increasingly influential in
pushing lawmakers to crack down on legal and illegal immigration. Texans For
Strong Borders is led by Chris Russo, who the Tribune recently reported was
behind numerous, anonymous social media accounts that were full of racist
posts. Russo is also an ally of white supremacist and Adolf Hitler admirer Nick
Fuentes.
“This is obviously a satirical card, but
unfortunately Dade Phelan’s pro-Muslim record is real,” the card states. “The
only path to heaven is through Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas!”
Cheshire confirmed to the Tribune via
text message Sunday that he mailed out the cards. They include a disclaimer
saying they were paid for by the Texas Anti-Communist League, a political
action committee that was registered last year but has not reported any
donations or contributions. Cheshire is the group's treasurer, but told the
Tribune he personally paid for the mailer.
“Dade Phelan is responsible for the most
pro-Muslim session in the history of the Texas Legislature,” Cheshire said.
His reasoning for that portrayal: The lower
chamber’s passage of House Resolutions 1069 and 1168, which both simply
recognized Eid al-fitr, a religious holiday marking the end of Ramadan.
“Texas is home to more than 400,000
Muslims, who contribute in myriad ways to the economic, cultural, and social
fabric of our state, and it is indeed fitting to acknowledge the profound
importance of Ramadan to the members of this vibrant community as they
celebrate with friends, families, and fellow worshippers,” the resolutions
state.
The House overwhelmingly passed the
resolutions, and it’s unclear why Cheshire singled out Phelan for their
passage. Phelan’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment
about the political advertisements.
Cheshire questioned how the mailer could
be perceived as anti-Muslim, but did not say why acknowledging a Muslim holiday
should be cause for concern.
"My card ridicules Dade Phelan and
his pro-Muslim record,” he said. “I think Texans should be informed about the
actions of their elected officials."
Bhojani said he appreciated that Phelan
participated in an iftar, or the breaking of the daily fast during Ramadan, and
regretted that the action was being politicized months later.
Rep. Tom Oliverson, a Cypress
Republican, condemned the cards on social media Sunday, calling them both
“stupid” and “bizarre.”
“Religious freedom is a core American
value,” Oliverson wrote on X. “Those who put this out have nothing in common
with our Lord Jesus Christ. They profane His message with their antics.”
Phelan, who represents House District
21, which stretches from East Texas to the Gulf Coast, faces two primary
challengers in the 2024 election, including David Covey, the former chair of
the Orange County GOP.
The card comes as the speaker faces
several attacks from within his own party and months after The Texas Tribune
reported that Defend Texas Liberty, a political action committee with which
Cheshire has ties, hosted a meeting with Fuentes.
In October, Defend Texas Liberty’s
former leader, Jonathan Stickland, was seen meeting with Fuentes for nearly
seven hours at the offices of Pale Horse Strategies, a consulting firm for
far-right groups. Cheshire was seen at the office while Fuentes was on-site.
The meeting unleashed a wave of
infighting among Texas Republicans. Phelan demanded that elected officials who
received donations from Defend Texas Liberty — including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick —
donate that money to charity, a demand echoed by 60 members of the Texas House
Republican Caucus.
Patrick then accused Phelan of
exploiting the conflict “for his own political gain” and called on Phelan to
resign as speaker before the Texas House was scheduled to meet for a special
session on education vouchers and other legislation.
Cheshire’s cards also come months after
a family copy of the Quran that Bhojani placed in the Capitol's chapel went
missing. State police investigated that matter and recovered the religious
text, but wouldn’t publicly say who took it.
Leaders in the Muslim community
denounced the mailers and said they showed a lack of appreciation for religious
diversity.
“It’s so dismaying to see that people
will use Islam to score points in politics,” said Shariq Ghani, executive
director of the Minaret Foundation, a Muslim civic organization. “The speaker
of the house has participated in Iftars, in Hanukkah, in Yom Kippur and in
different Christian traditions as well. He’s not singling out Islam. He’s
showing that people of all faiths are important.”
The mailers were also condemned by other
Republicans.
“There is nothing Christ-like about
these mailers or this intent,” Cat Parks, the former vice chair of the
Republican Party of Texas, wrote on X. “As we all prepare to celebrate Jesus’
birth… this is so shameful and sad.”

US unilateralism crumbling; resistance
pillar of region’s security: Iran’s deputy FM
25 December 2023
The Americans admit that a world order
based on unilateralism is on the decline and that they no loner will be able to
impose their will on the world anymore, says Iran’s deputy foreign minister for
political affairs.
Ali Bagheri Kani said under the current
circumstances that several actors are playing a role in the international
arena, the US is unable to impose an order based on its own interests on the
world.
“We believe that an order that lays
claim to multilateralism can be a logical and correct alternative to the
US-imposed order,” he old ISNA on Monday.
He hastened to add that such an order
would be able to meet the interests of independent nations and bring peace and
stability to the world.
Bagheri Kani also criticized the United
Nations Security Council, which he said claims to safeguard global peace and
security, for failing to take effective and firm action to end the Israeli
regime’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.
This failure is rooted in the fact that
the Americans view the world from their narrow perspective and meeting their
interests does not serve the interests and rights of other players in the
international arena, he said.
The senior Iranian diplomat further
emphasized that the continuation of Israel’s crimes and the US support for the
regime is a manifestation of the Americans’ failure to impose their order on
the international community.
The US would never be able to achieve
its objectives in case of the continuation of the ongoing situation in the
region, he asserted.
“The people of the world and Palestine
have clearly shown that they are not willing to give up their rights at all and
accept the order imposed by the Americans even at the cost of losing their
lives and their families,” Bagheri Kani added.
He emphasized that the people are
strictly standing against the “selfish and self-righteous” approach of the
United States.
The Iranian president slammed the
support of the so-called advocates of human rights for the Israeli crimes
against Palestinians.
Bagheri Kani also argued that the
“mature” resistance forces in the region can act as independent players at the
national and regional levels.
It has been proved to everyone that the
resistance movement is now an "undeniable pillar of stability and
security" in the region and their stabilizing role is clear to all, he
added.
Israel waged the brutal war on Gaza on
October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement carried out Operation
Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities
against the Palestinian people.
Since the start of the offensive, the
Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 20,424 Palestinians, mostly women and
children, and injured 54,036 others.
As the regime’s most dedicated ally, the
US has supplied it with more than 10,000 tons of military equipment since the
onset of the aggression.
Washington has also cast its veto
against all the United Nations Security Council resolutions that called for the
implementation of an immediate ceasefire across Gaza.

Arab World
How Saudi Arabia helmed Arab-Islamic
delegation on Gaza diplomatic marathon
December 24, 2023
RIYADH: The Palestinian cause is a
central focus of Saudi Arabia’s foreign policy due to the deep-rooted ties
between people in the two regions.
Palestinians in Saudi Arabia have long
acknowledged the Kingdom’s significant diplomatic and humanitarian role in
aiding Palestinians, and never more today amid the ongoing crisis.
In response to the escalation of
violence and attacks on Gaza, particularly following Israel’s reaction to the
Hamas assault on Oct. 7, Saudi Arabia ramped up its efforts to try and halt the
aggression.
Sobhi Al-Haddad, a 69-year-old resident
of Saudi Arabia since 1957 with numerous relatives in Gaza, some of whom were
casualties in the recent strikes, told Arab News about the Kingdom’s consistent
support for Arab nations in crises, and particularly its backing of the
Palestinian cause.
Al-Haddad said: “The Kingdom’s position
has always been clear throughout history.
“It supports all Arab countries in all
the crises they suffer from, and at the heart of them is the Palestinian cause.
The Kingdom tries to protect the interests of the Palestinians and preserve
their legitimate rights.”
Saudi Arabia has actively sought to
resolve the conflict, while shielding civilians from atrocities. The Kingdom, through
the Saudi aid agency KSrelief, has dispatched 4,500 tons of humanitarian aid to
Gaza to help the situation.
Al-Haddad spoke of the efforts of the
Saudi leadership, including King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman,
to support the Palestinian people.
Saudi Arabia has also initiated a
national fundraising campaign through the Sahem platform of KSrelief,
underlining its long-standing commitment to Palestinian welfare during crises.
Al-Haddad added: “Saudi efforts do not
stop with diplomatic discussions with world leaders.
“It has extended support to the
Palestinians in the ordeal they have been exposed to by launching a national
fundraising campaign through the Sahem platform.
“In my name and on behalf of my
Palestinian brothers, I extend the highest expressions of thanks, appreciation,
and gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Highness the
Crown Prince for this noble humanitarian initiative, and the unlimited
political and diplomatic support for the Palestinian cause.”
In the complex landscape of Middle
Eastern geopolitics, the Kingdom’s unwavering support for Palestine stands out
and is woven deeply into the region’s narrative.
This support, which transcends the
realms of diplomatic engagement, is anchored in a shared heritage and cultural
connections. Over the years, this bond has matured into a diverse and robust
support system, stretching from the streets of Riyadh to the conflict-ridden
areas of Gaza and the West Bank.
Saudi Arabia’s involvement goes beyond
the realms of financial and humanitarian assistance. The Kingdom has leveraged
its diplomatic influence to champion the rights of Palestinians and has long
been a consistent advocate for peace, actively promoting initiatives and
dialogue aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
A key aspect of its support has been its
backing for the establishment of a Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as
its capital. Through these efforts, Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal role in
molding global perspectives and drawing attention to the Palestinians’ plight.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin
Farhan addressed the issue of Palestinian refugees on Nov. 29, emphasizing that
the solution lies not in relocation but in stopping violence, lifting
blockades, and facilitating humanitarian aid to Palestine.
He reiterated that Palestinians should
live securely and with dignity on their land, a stance that Saudi Arabia firmly
advocates.
He said: “The weight has to be lifted,
but it is not to be lifted by the Arab world. It is to be lifted by removing
that weight, and that is very easy: by stopping the killing, by stopping the
blockade, and by allowing enough humanitarian aid to go in to support
Palestine.”
Saudi Arabia was among 153 nations
advocating for an immediate ceasefire earlier this month. Prince Faisal also
said Palestinians should not be compelled to leave their homeland, affirming
their right to their territory.
He added: “The Palestinians do not want
to leave their land, and we are not going to encourage them or force them to
leave their land, and we’re not going to work with anyone who has that agenda.”
Basel Abdulaziz, 63, a resident of Saudi
Arabia with family in Gaza, has acknowledged the Kingdom’s unwavering support
for the Palestinian cause.
He speaks of Saudi Arabia’s support
extending beyond financial aid to include moral and political backing at
international forums, all the while keeping the Palestinian issue at the
forefront of the world’s conscience.

Saudi donations to Gaza via Sahem exceed
$158 million
December 24, 2023
RIYADH : The Sahem platform, operating
under the sponsorship of the Saudi aid agency KSrelief, has emerged as a vital
lifeline amid the Gaza conflict, marked by humanitarian challenges.
The online donation platform exemplifies
the convergence of technology and philanthropy, creating a safe, secure, and
efficient avenue for 1.22 million donors who have collectively contributed more
than SR593 million (approximately $ 158 million) to aid the Palestinian people
affected by the Gaza war.
This substantial outpouring of support,
orchestrated in the shadow of a conflict that has profoundly impacted the Gaza
Strip, underscores the resilient and charitable spirit of the Saudi people.
In response to the directives issued by
King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last November, the platform
has mobilized a diverse range of contributors. These include not just
individuals but also corporations, charitable foundations, and members of the
Saudi community, all united in their efforts to provide relief and support to
those affected by the conflict.
“Sahem has provided Saudis with a safe
means of donating to whatever project they find abroad, especially in
war-stricken areas, with a simple click of a button. The images that we see
today coming from Gaza are beyond difficult and heartbreaking. We have always
stood with our Palestinian brothers and sisters, and we will always stand with
them in their time of need,” said one anonymous donor.
The success of the Sahem platform is
anchored in its commitment to the security of contributions. This aspect is
crucial, given the sensitive nature of the funds and the critical need for them
to reach the intended recipients without any compromise.

KSRelief’s efforts to ease humanitarian
crisis
December 24, 2023
GHADI JOUDAH
RIYADH: The tragic events unfolding in
Gaza since Oct. 7 have cast a sorrowful shadow over the upcoming Christmas
celebrations. With many Palestinian Christians losing their lives, the joy of
this festive occasion seems muted.
In Gaza, a region that has witnessed
relentless violence and conflict from the Israeli military, both Muslim and
Christian communities have been targets.
According to the UN Relief and Works
Agency for Palestine Refugees, 1.9 million people have been displaced since
Oct. 7, comprising nearly 85 percent of Gaza’s residents.
While the Israeli aggression transcends
religion, destroying both Muslim and Christian places of worship along with
those taking shelter within them, the Saudi humanitarian efforts are inclusive
of all religions and faiths.
In these trying times, the King Salman
Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center has undertaken significant efforts to
provide relief aid to the people of Gaza since Oct. 7.
The official spokesman for KSRelief, Dr.
Samer Al-Jetaily, told Arab News that Israel still imposes restrictions on aid,
controlling the number of trucks that enter through Gaza’s crossings. When the
Kerem Shalom crossing is closed, the Egyptian Rafah crossing opens.
“The current humanitarian need due to a
severe shortage of all the necessities of life is estimated to be 800 trucks
per day to the Gaza Strip,” he said.
The maximum aid entering Gaza through
Rafah does not exceed 50 trucks daily. Before Oct. 7, about 400 to 500 trucks
entered daily.
Al-Jetaily told Arab News:
“Unfortunately, what enters now does not constitute more than 10 to 15 trucks a
day, and there is an accumulation of trucks at Al-Arish waiting for any
opportunity to enter.”
He said that due to Israeli restrictions
on basic human needs, KSrelief now has more than 100 trucks waiting at the
Rafah crossing.
On Dec. 19, the UN Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that Israel’s restricting of
telecommunications services in southern Gaza resulted in trucks being stuck at
the border.
Al-Jetaily said that KSrelief brought in
about 104 trucks since Nov. 9.
The first Saudi relief plane to help
Palestinians in Gaza left on Nov. 9 from King Khalid International Airport in
Riyadh to Al-Arish International Airport in Egypt.
The total aid provided through the
relief air and sea bridge is 4,328 tons, including 33 relief planes, 20
ambulances, and four other vessels.
Saudi Arabia raised $158 million from
over 1.22 million donors through the Saudi fundraising campaign on the Sahem
platform.
“The Kingdom’s contributions come from
King Salman bin Abdulaziz and his Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s directive,
all members of society, public and private institutions, major companies, and
advertisements,” Al-Jetaily said.
The total amount provided for the aid of
Palestine exceeded $5 billion during the last 23 years, Al-Jetaily added.
“We are a center that deals with many
international organizations, the most important of which are the Palestinian
Red Crescent Society and UNRWA, where we receive aid and distribute it to these
partners.”
Al-Jetaily said that the international
community must devise a decisive plan that guarantees the flow of aid into the
Gaza Strip without restriction and without preventing all sorts of aid.
“What Israel is doing is a crime against
humanity, a clear violation of international law, which stipulates that they
must protect civilians,” he said.
Further, 80 percent of housing in Gaza
has been completely destroyed by the Israeli military.
Even those who escape this systematic
targeting do not find or receive the minimum level of health care.
“Many deaths now occur due to the
unavailability and shortage of medical services, even at the hospital level.
Now, 14 out of 36 hospitals are partially working, and a hospital is shot down
or attacked.”
With the continuous aerial and ground
attacks by the Israeli military, the death toll in Gaza has reached 20,000,
more than half of whom are women and children. More than 50,000 people are
injured with at least 8,000 missing.
Despite having no Hamas presence in the
West Bank, Israel has killed approximately 297 people there, too, including 69
children.
Al-Jetaily told Arab News: “More than
360 doctors and nurses were killed, hospitals were demolished over the heads of
patients, and we see the suffering of premature babies and the cutting off of
electricity and food, as they are exposed, as we have seen more than once, to
slow death.”
UNRWA says that more than 100 of its
workers have been killed since Oct. 7, which is the largest crime it has
witnessed in decades.
Al-Jetaily said: “We witnessed at Kamal
Adwan Hospital in Gaza the Israeli Army entering with bulldozers and trampling
on the living people inside the tents. We saw the remains of children and women
left behind after the bulldozers left. Is there anything more severe than these
crimes?”
On Dec. 19, UNOCHA reported that
telecommunications services in southern Gaza were partially restored following
the longest shutdown since the onset of the crisis.
These recurrent interruptions and the
lack of electricity hinder access to vital information and severely affect
humanitarian relief efforts.
The besieged enclave already faces
severe shortages of essential supplies, such as food, water, gas, and medical
assistance.
KSrelief received news that the Kerem
Shalom crossing has opened, which means there is the possibility of bringing in
aid with a larger capacity if Israel allows.
The Rafah refugee camp has been plagued
by violence, poverty, and despair for years. Currently, however, the suffering
of the residents has reached an unprecedented level.
Al-Jetaily said that the first and most
important step to preserve innocent Palestinian lives is through a ceasefire.
Saudi Arabia voted for a ceasefire at the UN Security Council on Dec. 8.

Pakistan
Pakistan’s foreign policy and the
Palestine question in the light of Quaid’s vision
December 25, 2023
Kokab-al-saba
Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah
envisioned Pakistan as a true Muslim state, serving as the custodian of Islam
and a promoter of brotherhood, unity, and peace in the Muslim world. Shortly
after gaining independence, Pakistan encountered a challenge in the form of the
Arab-Israel conflict over Palestine. Quaid-i-Azam took a principled stance,
offering support to the Muslim Ummah against Israel. Pakistan supported the
Arabs in their conflicts with Israel in 1948, 1967, and 1973.
Since then, Pakistan has maintained a
principled position, unconditionally supporting Palestine. In 2023, Palestine
finds itself in a similar situation, seeking support from the Muslim world.
Presently, Israel stands as an undeniable military power in the Middle East,
possessing a credible nuclear deterrent, superior military capabilities, a
well-established economy, and strong diplomatic relationships with major powers
worldwide.
Today, Pakistan is positioned to play a
crucial role in line with Quaid-i-Azam’s vision. As a credible nuclear state
and the most powerful military in the Muslim world, Pakistan holds a central
position. The key to resolving the Palestine issue lies in unity within the
Muslim world, with Pakistan at the forefront. Although the Muslim Ummah numbers
1.8 billion, they still face numerous challenges, including external
aggressions, internal subversions, terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation.
The Muslim Ummah needs unity and if they
collectively decide to take action against any aggressive state, it would have
a substantial impact. For instance, if the 1.8 billion Muslim population
boycotts Israel and its supporters like the US, EU, and others, these entities
would struggle to withstand such a massive boycott. The economies of the US and
Europe could collapse under the weight of a boycott by 1.8 billion Muslims.
Furthermore, if the Muslim world comes together and forms a bloc, it could
significantly influence global politics.
Today, the collective Nominal GDP of the
Muslim Ummah exceeds $10 trillion USD. With such a substantial economic bloc,
it can easily establish a bank following the pattern of the IMF and provide
interest-free loans to underdeveloped Muslim countries for their development
and prosperity. Within a few decades, the Muslim Ummah could emerge from
economic crises and debt traps. The Muslim world, endowed with vast hydrocarbon
resources, has the potential to significantly impact the economic growth of the
Eastern and Western worlds, especially those that staunchly support Israel in its
brutal oppression of Muslims in Gaza and other regions. Today, the Muslim world
controls over 1000 billion barrels of oil, representing approximately 75% of
the world's total oil reserves as of 2023. Saudi Arabia leads among Muslim
countries with about 18% of the global reserves, followed by Iran (9%), Iraq
(8.5%), Kuwait (6%), UAE (5.9%), Libya (2.8%), and Nigeria (2.2%). Recent
estimates indicate that OPEC countries possess 79.5% of the world's oil
reserves, totaling 1,243.52 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. The
majority of these reserves come from Muslim countries. The Muslim Ummah has the
potential to wield these oil reserves as a powerful tool.
The world witnessed a preview in 1973
when Muslim countries imposed an oil embargo on the West for supporting Israel.
Within a few weeks, Western economies were on the verge of collapse in 1973,
prompting a halt to hostilities in the Middle East. The Muslim world could once
again bring the world's leading economies to their knees by imposing an oil embargo.
Unfortunately, despite immense economic potential and a significant labour
force, Muslims continue to face challenges globally. The missing link lies in
the lack of unity in the Muslim world and a robust military deterrent. The
Muslim Ummah has the capability to form the most powerful and formidable force.
Today, Muslim countries can establish a robust NATO-style military alliance
comprising over 1 million forces. There is no shortage of manpower, weapons, or
resources in the Muslim countries. Pakistan, in particular, alone can meet the
defence needs of the Muslim world. The critical aspect with Pakistan is its
nuclear deterrence capability. Pakistan can offer extended nuclear deterrence
to the Muslim world and strategically deploy its nuclear missiles in various
important countries to discourage any potential aggressors from taking
undesirable actions. The USA, along with the UK and France, has provided
extended nuclear deterrence to the Western world, Japan, and South Korea
This is the reason that no country in
the world can ever contemplate any aggressive intent against the West or other
countries due to the extended nuclear deterrence of the US. Pakistan can adopt
a similar strategy; funds generated by the Muslim world could be invested in
research and development to enhance the range, precision, and accuracy of
Pakistani nuclear missiles. Such a step would provide a nuclear umbrella to the
Muslim Ummah. With substantial economies, the Muslim Ummah can pool resources
and allocate significant funds for the defense budget to meet their defence
needs. In this context, they can also procure weapons from Russia and China to
address operational gaps and maintain a credible conventional force to deter
any aggression. Jinnah’s dream was to witness a Pakistan guided by Islamic
values and a sense of brotherhood for the Muslim Ummah. Today, many Muslim
countries look up to Pakistan with hope, especially the Muslims of Indian-held
Kashmir and the oppressed Palestinians who see Pakistan as a potential saviour.
Unfortunately, the most powerful military in the Muslim world is currently
grappling with unprecedented political instability, a hostile neighbourhood, a
volatile security situation, and a declining economy.
Quaid’s vision focused on fostering
better ties with Muslim countries and maintaining friendly relations with
neighbours and the international community. Over the years, Pakistan has
navigated complex diplomatic challenges, engaging with various countries and
international organisations to address issues such as security, economic
development, and human rights. It's important to note that foreign policy
evolves over time based on changing global dynamics and national interests.
While Jinnah's principles continue to
influence Pakistan's foreign policy, the country also adapts to contemporary
challenges and opportunities. It is imperative for the policymakers of Pakistan
to follow Quaid’s guidance as a foundational principle for our foreign policy.
Pakistan is meant to lead the Muslim Ummah, as envisioned by the Quaid, and it
must overcome its economic woes, political crises, and impulsive security
measures for long-term peace and stability. The country should work towards the
unity of the Muslim world, fostering peaceful coexistence with the
international community with dignity, respect, and Islamic values.

Tribune that ambassadors stationed in 20 key world capitals and international
organisations would attend the conference to be held at the Foreign Office in
the first week of January.
They further said caretaker Prime
Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar would attend the inaugural session. Relevant
officials will join the diplomats for the three-day consultations.
The conference is an annual feature to
discuss contemporary foreign challenges and form Pakistan's policy accordingly.
This is the first time conference is
taking place in person since 2019.
The sources said ambassadors of Pakistan
in the US, France, Germany, UK, India, Russia, China, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey
and other countries would attend the conference.
Permanent representatives to the UN and
other organisations of the global body will also participate in the event.
The sources said the diplomats would
present their respective briefings on the issues that directly affected
Pakistan’s foreign policy and make recommendations at the end of the
conference.
Among the issues that are likely to
dominate the conference is the current state of tense relationship with
Afghanistan.
Ties between Islamabad and Kabul are
tense over the latter’s refusal to tackle the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan
(TTP).
The number of attacks in Pakistan from
across the border has jacked up in recent months.
The Afghan Taliban government's
reluctance to act against the TTP has compelled Pakistan to change its approach
towards the Kabul regime.
At a recent debate at the UN Security
Council, Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN laid down new terms of
engagement between the Afghan Taliban and international community.
Munir Akram told the world body that any
process of engagement with the Afghan Taliban government must focus on the
actions it took against terrorist outfits, including the TTP.
This was a departure from Pakistan's
earlier stance where Islamabad had been advocating for engagement with the
Afghan Taliban based on accepting the ground realities.
Pakistan's charge d'affaires in Kabul
will give his input on the current state of ties with the Taliban government.
The other issue figuring high on the
agenda will be the current situation in Gaza.
Since the October 7 Hamas attacks,
Israel has carried out relentless bombing and ground offensive in Gaza.
The massacre in Gaza has raised
questions about the role of the Islamic world.
The relationship with New Delhi, with
particular reference to the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir
(IIOJK), will be discussed in detail as well.
India has further strengthened control
over the disputed territory after the recent decision of its Supreme Court,
endorsing the Narendra Modi government’s August 5, 2019 unilateral act of
depriving IIOJK of its special status.
Given Pakistan's financial problems, the
conference will also discuss economic diplomacy.
It is expected that civil-military led
Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) would be subject of the
discussion in the realm of economic diplomacy.

‘Gaza Labour March’ held in Karachi
2023-12-25
KARACHI: A large number of labourers
under the banner of the National Labour Federation (NLF) took out a Gaza Labour
March from Regal Chowk to the Karachi Press Club in solidarity with
Palestinians against the Israeli aggression here on Sunday evening.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chapter
Ameer Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman led the march. Home-based women workers,
besides a large number of industrial workers, including women and their family
members participated in the march.
The protestors, carrying placards and
banners, chanted slogans against the Israeli brutalities. They also chanted
slogans against ‘local agents’ of the Zionist occupiers.
Addressing the participants, Hafiz
Naeemur Rehman said that ‘agents’ of the United States in Pakistan has been
talking about the two-state solution theory for Palestine in order to further
strengthen the agenda of Israel and the US. He said that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad
Ali Jinnah had categorically stated that Israel was an illegitimate child of
the West and that we would not recognise her. He further said that those who
are defying the policy of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Pakistan
Movement are just supporting a narrative that serves the agenda of Israel.
There is no two-state solution to the issue of Qibla-e-Awal, as Palestine
belongs to Palestinians and not the Zionist regime, he reminded the Pakistani
leadership.
He urged the nation to use their vote
against those siding with Israel by propagating in the favour of the so-called
two-state theory.

COAS’s visit to US receives widespread
acclaim: Ashrafi
December 25, 2023
Asim Yasin
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister’s Special
Representative for Religious Harmony and Pakistani Diaspora in Middle East and
Muslim Countries Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi on Saturday said Chief of
Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir received widespread acclaim from both
Pakistan and the Muslim world during his successful visit to the United States
(US).
“The COAS’s articulate narrative on the
issues of Palestine and Kashmir resonated not only in Pakistan but all over the
Muslim world, emphasizing the importance of a diplomatic approach and
international collaboration to resolve longstanding conflicts, he said in
statement on Sunday.
Ashrafi, who is also Chairman of
Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), said Pakistan and Muslim leaders praised General
Asim’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. He said the
COAS’s visit underscored the significance of fostering global understanding and
cooperation on these critical matters.
In a diplomatic stride towards enhancing
bilateral ties, he said General Asim concluded his successful visit to the US,
fostering collaboration between Pakistan and America. He said the visit, marked
by high-level meetings and discussions, not only strengthened military
cooperation but also delved into critical international issues, notably
addressing the longstanding tension between Palestine and Israel.
Ashrafi said General Asim, leading a
delegation of high-ranking military officials, engaged in strategic talks with
top US military and political leaders. He said discussions revolved around
bolstering defense collaboration, counterterrorism efforts, and regional
stability. He said the US acknowledged Pakistan’s pivotal role in the region
and expressed commitment to fortifying the longstanding partnership between the
two nations.
Ashrafi said a significant aspect of the
visit was General Asim’s emphasis on addressing the Palestine-Israel conflict.
“In an interaction with media persons the COAS urged for immediate measures to
ease the ongoing tension in the region,” he said. He said General Asim
emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the crisis, advocating for a peaceful
resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
During closed-door meetings, Ashrafi
said General Asim presented Pakistan’s perspective on the Palestine issue,
emphasizing the need for a just and comprehensive solution that ensures the
establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He said the COAS underlined
the importance of international cooperation in facilitating dialogue between
conflicting parties and encouraged the US to play a proactive role in mediating
the dispute.
Tahir Ashrafi said the visit also saw
understanding in various sectors particularly at enhancing military
cooperation, intelligence sharing, and joint training exercises. “Both nations
expressed their commitment to collaboratively addressing global challenges,
including counterterrorism efforts and regional security,” he added.
He further said General Asim’s visit
served as a testament to the enduring partnership between Pakistan and the US,
extending beyond military cooperation to encompass shared interests in promoting
peace and stability on the global stage. He said as General Asim continued to
champion these causes on the international stage, his leadership was gaining
recognition for advancing diplomatic solutions and bridging divides.

Penang Government: Penang Allocates
RM10m For Development Of Non-Islamic Places Of Worship Until 2028
Opalyn Mok
25 Dec 2023
GEORGE TOWN, Dec 25 — The Penang
government has allocated RM10 million for the development of Non-Islamic Places
of Worship (RIBI) until 2028, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He also said the state is now in
discussions to implement an e-RIBI system.
“As of 2022, a total of 134 RIBIs have
received land covering a total of 83.41 acres,” he said in his Christmas
message today.
He said this is part of the state’s
inclusivity efforts to assist Penangites to practise their respective religions
without any hindrance.
“One of the state’s initiatives is the
establishment of Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico) in 2021 to promote the
concept of harmony among religions aside from establishing a strong management
system of non-Islamic affairs,” he said.
He said Penang is one of three states in
the country to have a special unit for this purpose.
Chow said the state government is
prepared to further strengthen Penang’s development in the next five years in
terms of job opportunities, development of the ecosystem network, management of
climate change, water supply, community development, energy transition and new
income sources.
He said that he believes with the
reclamation of Silicon Island, the state will be able to replicate the success
of the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone (FIZ) over 50 years ago.
“The Silicon Island, which will feature
a high-tech industrial park (GTP), a global business services (GBS) hub,
commercial development, housing, and green recreational areas, is expected to
generate a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of RM1.1 trillion, attract investments
of RM74.6 billion, and create 220,000 job opportunities,” he said.
He said these plans are for the future
of the state and for the benefit of future generations in Penang.
“The Penang state government has never
given up and will continue to find alternatives to ensure the interests of
every individual in the state is protected, no one is left behind in the Pearl
of the Orient,” he said.
Chow said he hopes that the spirit of
Christmas this year will continue to foster togetherness as a symbol of unity
in the state.
He also urged those who are travelling
to exercise caution on the roads.
“May all of you have a meaningful
celebration this festive season,” he said.

Amanah sets tone for battle against
religious, racial manipulation on Malay-Muslim minds
24 Dec 2023
THE AMANAH national convention ended
today with delegates shuffling out having a clearer grip on how religion has
been unduly exploited for political advantage in the Malaysian electoral
landscape.
Specifically, the sentiment that Islam
and the position of the Malays are threatened has been played up by the party’s
adversaries in past elections.
It has contributed significantly to
Amanah failing to garner the desired support, even among young voters.
Its president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu
made a call for the current Madani Government to highlight and assert the
immense power of moderation to the electorate.
He said that Pakatan Harapan (PH) should
have garnered better support from Malay-Muslim voters after its government had
passed and implemented beneficial legislations when the coalition was in power
from 2018 to early 2020.
Among these was the Undi18 law which
lowered the minimum voting age from 21 years to 18, and enabled automatic
registration of voters.
However, the support for PH failed to
adequately materialise due to the religious and racial sentiments which even
influenced young Muslims, causing many among them to vote for Perikatan
Nasional (PN) instead.
"Unid18 was indeed approved and put
in place by our (PH) government, but we could not disseminate information on
its significance at schools, universities and so on when the (next) election
took place and we were no longer ruling at that time,” he said in his address
at the convention in Klang.
The PH government was brought down in
February 2020 due to defections, way before the next general election took
place in November 2022.
Mohamad said that PN had harped on the
notion that Islam was being threatened and that the position of the Malays
would not be guaranteed in Malaysia in the future.
"The issue of Islam being
threatened really caught the hearts and minds of the people such that we saw
personages from Amanah and Umno lose,” he said, referring to the general
election last year.
He pointed as an example the stunning
defeat of Nurul Izzah Anwar, daughter of PH chairman and current prime minister
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in her family’s stronghold of Permatang Pauh to a far
lesser-known candidate from PAS.
“The famous 'princess of reformation'
(as Nurul Izzah is known) lost in Permatang Pauh, the fortress where Reformasi
was born,” he said.
"This was a result of the game of
Islam and Malays being threatened.”
He said the onus is now on the Madani
Government led by Anwar to demonstrate how exactly Islam and the position of
Malays could be threatened.
Mohamad, who is also the federal
minister of agriculture and food security, expressed optimism that the Madani
Government will continue ruling with even stronger support after the 16th
general election (GE16), due in four years.
He stressed on the importance of unity
and moderation among parties in the present administration.
“With that we can continue to be the
government for a long time to come,” he said.
“I am sure that if we are united, it
will go well for us in GE16. The Unity Government will return to rule in bigger
style.”
Dzulkefly bags most votes
On the issue of local government
elections, Mohamad said that discussions and in-depth studies must be done
beforehand to ensure all races are satisfied and feel secure with the
implementation of the elections.
“If one is chosen by the people, then he
must work diligently for the people’s interests, not the party’s,” Mohamad
said.
“It is necessary to win the people’s
hearts and ensure no one is left behind,” he added.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr
Dzulkefly Ahmad, who is Amanah’s director of strategy, obtained the highest
number of votes in the election for the party’s leadership committee for the
2023-2026 term held during the convention.
Dzulkefly, who is also the Kuala
Selangor MP, got 900 votes.
Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad bagged
the second largest share of votes. He garnered 899 votes.
Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof obtained 755
votes while Mohamad Sabu ranked eighth with 613 votes.
A total of 1,008 delegates participated
in an e-voting session to elect the party’s speaker, deputy speaker and 27
Amanah leadership committee members.
In total, a total of 98 candidates
competed to fill the contested positions.
The 27 new committee members will next
choose among themselves who should occupy the five highest positions of the
party. – The Vibes, December 24, 2023

China earthquake death toll rises to
149, two still missing after a week
25 Dec 2023
BEIJING, Dec 25 — One of China’s most
powerful earthquakes in recent years killed at least 149 people in a remote
northwestern region, according to state media, with two people still missing
after the magnitude 6.2 temblor hit a week ago.
The epicentre of the quake straddled the
provinces of Gansu and Qinghai in an area where many of China’s Hui people, a
tight-knit ethnic minority characterised by its distinctive Muslim identity,
are found.
Gansu bore the brunt of the quake’s
wrath. More than 200,000 homes were wrecked and 15,000 were on the brink of
collapse, Chinese state media reported. Displacing 145,000 people, the powerful
tremors killed 117 people in the province as of December 22, with 781 wounded.
In Qinghai west of Gansu, 32 people died
and two remained missing as of 11pm on Sunday, according to state media.
Local authorities attributed the
severity of the damage to the shallowness of the quake. The thrust-type rupture
of the earthquake and the relatively soft sedimentary rock in the region also
amplified the destructive power of the tremors.
Many of the homes destroyed were built
from an earlier era, made of earth-wood or brick-wood structures. Their
load-bearing walls were constructed from earth, resulting in their poor
defences against any earthquake, local authorities said.
The tragedy has highlighted the urgency
of raising the earthquake resistance of rural homes, they added.
Earthquakes are common in provinces on
the northeastern boundary of the tectonically active Qinghai-Tibetan plateau,
comprising most of Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, parts of Xinjiang and the rugged
highlands in the west of Sichuan.
Ten years ago in Sichuan, more than
6,700 people were injured and over 160 were killed in a magnitude 6.6
earthquake. In 2010, a destructive magnitude 7.1 quake killed 2,700 people in
Yushu, a largely Tibetan area in Qinghai. — Reuters

Hanging Christmas tree falls and injures
Singaporean man
Sudirman Mohd Tahir
December 25, 2023
KUALA LUMPUR: A Singaporean's Christmas
celebration became an unfortunate experience when a decorative Christmas tree
hanging from a shopping mall ceiling, here, fell on him and injured his head.
The victim's wife, Aileen Tan, 39, said
the incident happened when her husband was taking a photograph of her and their
child near where it fell.
"My husband (Julius Lee, 44) was
standing outside the merry-go-round to take our picture, when suddenly a
Christmas tree fell on him.
"We were surprised and didn't
expect it at all. It happened so fast.
"Thankfully my child was with me.
My child would've been hit by the Christmas tree if she was in the
stroller," she told Harian Metro.
She added that her husband's head was
swollen and brought to the clinic by the mall's management.
Tan said her husband, her three-year-old
daughter and herself were in the city since Wednesday to celebrate Christmas.
"We came to celebrate Christmas. We
planned to stroll in the mall, but something else happened," she said.
During the incident, the visitors in the
mall were also startled and tried to help the victim before mall security
arrived.
The mall management immediately removed
the fallen Christmas tree, and visitors continued taking pictures with the

130 al-Shabaab terrorists killed in
military operations in central, southern Somalia
Mohamed Dhaysane
24.12.2023
At least 130 al-Shabaab militants were
killed during simultaneous military operations in central and southern Somalia,
the country's Defense Ministry said on Sunday, claiming to have liberated large
swaths of land from the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group in the past three
days.
The Somali National Army, backed by
local forces, has been conducting separate military operations against
al-Shabaab terrorists in the central province of Mudug in Hirshabelle state, as
well as the southern state of Jubaland, which have been ongoing for the past
three days, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The army also seized weapons and
equipment from terrorist hideouts, which were destroyed during military
operations, it added.
“Large swaths of territory were
liberated” during these operations, which the ministry called against the
“Khawarijs,” an Arabic term used for the first sect in Islam that rebelled
against Islamic rule in the early years after Prophet Mohammad, the last of the
Muslim’s prophets, demise.
During these operations, "large
swaths of territory were liberated" from the "Khawarijs," an
Arabic term for the first sect in Islam that rebelled against Islamic rule in
the early years following the passing of Prophet Mohammad, the last of the
Muslim prophets.
“Caadley, Buurta Yagoos, and the
vicinity of Baraag Ismaaciil, all located in Mudug region” are liberated from
the terrorist group, the ministry said.
“The Somali National Army and the
People's Defense Forces are determined to continue the war against the Khawarij
until they are eradicated from the country,” the statement said.
Somalia has been plagued by insecurity
for years, with the main threats emanating from al-Shabaab and the Daesh/ISIS
terror groups.
Since 2007, al-Shabaab terror group has
been fighting the Somali government and the African Union Transition Mission in
Somalia (ATMIS), a multidimensional mission authorized by the African Union and
mandated by the United Nations Security Council.
The terror group has increased attacks
since the Somali president, who was elected for a second term last year,
declared an "all-out war" on al-Shabaab.

Nigerian Cleric Asks Christians, Muslims
To Embrace Tolerance
25th December 2023
Babajide Ajia
The Founder, Muslims’ in Light
Organisation of Nigeria, Rasheed Akinbile, has charged Christians and Muslims
to continue to tolerate one another in the interest of peace and development of
Nigeria.
He gave the charge in his Christmas
message to the two faiths on Sunday at a lecture delivered during the
organisation’s service at City Zawiah, Challenge, Ibadan.
“Identify yourself as light. Jesus came
as Jesus but was later identified as light, hence Jesus Christ. You also have a
name but the light found you and you are now identified as The Divine Light
(TDL). This period exists to celebrate what you are which is The Divine Light
of Allah,” he said.
The Muslim cleric added, “Christmas is a
word which combines two things: Christ which also means light and love and
mass, a word which means plenty. Therefore, Christmas is a period which
signifies plenty of light and love, a period to give and receive joy and happiness.
“Do not worry about what will become of
your future or let your past have a hold over you. Worrying about your children
wouldn’t help you, instead rely on the one who takes care of you and be rest
assured that he can also take care of them.
“There is No Power or Strength except by
God. This is not a prayer; it is a declaration. You have to understand that
only Allah can do all things. This is the greatest of wisdom. Whatever happens,
because God willed it to happen.”
Akinbile, convener of the first
interfaith conference in Nigeria, said it was time for both Muslims and
Christians to live above sentiment and personal influence but reflect on the
teachings of Prophet Isa or Jesus Christ which centres on the act of love, care
and sharing.
“Churches and mosques were built before
you came to the world to condition you. Every sermon on Friday or Sunday is to
condition you to wear above-ankle length trousers, to keep beards and to eat
with three fingers with the promise of heaven and if you don’t do that, you’ll
go to hell. Unfortunately, you’ve accepted this level of conditioning.
“Prophet Isa came to put an end to this
conditioning so that you may gain freedom. Great inventors like Albert
Einstein, Bill Gates, etc. were dropouts from school. They avoided societal
conditioning by withdrawing from the so-called learning institution. If a great
and distinguished individual like Bill Gates didn’t take this action, you may
not have the computer you have today.”

13 Zamfara undergraduates, corpers spend
Christmas in bandits’ den
25th December 2023
Maiharaji Altine and Nathaniel Shaibu
As the world celebrates Christmas Day
today, 11 out of the 24 students of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara
State, who were kidnapped by bandits on September 20, remain in captivity.
Also, two corps members who were
kidnapped on August 29, 2023, on their way to the National Youth Service Corps
Permanent Orientation Camp in Sokoto have yet to regain freedom. They have
spent 128 days in captivity.
The PUNCH reports that bandits, in large
numbers, on September 20, 2023, invaded the off-campus hostels of the FUGUS in
Sabon-Gida village very close to the university and abducted 24 female
students.
The marauding bandits, who invaded the
community around 3 am, shooting indiscriminately, whisked the varsity students
into the forest.
Despite being engaged in a duel by the
military, which responded to a distress call, the bandits succeeded in
abducting 24 students.
However, a combined team of the army and
other security agents pursued the bandits in the forest in two separate
operations and were able to rescue 13 students three days after the incident.
At the time of filing this report, the
remaining 11 students, who are all females, are still in captivity and there is
every possibility that they will spend their Christmas Day in the forest.
Last week during the school’s
matriculation of new students, the vice chancellor, Prof. Muazu Abubakar,
prayed for the quick release of the students still being held by bandits.
The vice chancellor advised the new
students to be extra vigilant and security conscious as they go about their
daily activities.
He said, “I am calling on all the
students to be extra vigilant and security conscious as you go about your daily
activities. Kindly report any suspicious movement of persons or groups to the
nearest security agents or appropriate university authorities.
“And to our abducted students, I want to
assure them that they are always in our hearts and we are always praying for
their safety and quick release.”
In an effort to draw the attention of
the relevant authorities, the parents of the abducted students staged a
peaceful demonstration at the Gusau Government House gate, demanding the
release of their children abducted by bandits almost four months ago.
The parents, who came from various
states of the federation, blocked the Government House main gate, in a bid to
draw the attention of both the federal and Zamfara State governments to their
plight.
One of the protesters, who gave his name
as Yakubu Mohammed, said he came all the way from Abuja to join the protest
because both the state and the Federal Government had failed to rescue their
children.
He said, “My daughter, Naziratu
Mohammed, is among the students of the Federal University Gusau who were
abducted in their hostel almost four months ago.
“We have followed all necessary steps to
get our children rescued but unfortunately there is no positive result.”
Another parent, Bashir Yakubu, said
since the students were abducted, there were no concrete steps taken by the
authorities to ensure their release.
Yakubu, who came from Suleija in Niger
State, said his daughter Umaima Mohammed Bashir was among the abductees.
He said, “We complained to the Vice
Chancellor who told us that there was nothing the University could do.”
Responding to the appeals by the parents
of the abducted students, the vice chancellor said the school authorities were
doing their best to rescue the abducted students.
He said, “We met with the parents of the
abducted students to console them on this sad development. We also contacted
all the relevant authorities and we have since embarked on prayers for the
release of the students as there is nothing we can do apart from this.”
Reacting to the demonstration by the
parents, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Information, Munnir Haidara, told
The PUNCH that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Dauda
Lawal, was doing its best to tackle insecurity.
“Necessary measures are currently being taken
by the state government to rescue the abducted students. It is not proper for
me to disclose the issue to the media. The state government is quite aware of
the traumatic situation for both the parents and the abducted students.
“I want to sympathise with the students
and their parents over this sad incident but I am assuring them that something
is being done to get the students rescued by the grace of God.”
Also, The PUNCH reports that gunmen
kidnapped the eight prospective corps members in Zamfara, while they were on
their way from Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Sokoto.
While six of the corps members have so far been released – three on the 18th of
September, one on the 22nd of October, and two others on the 8th of December –
two of the corps members remain in captivity to this day.
In the past eight years, records show
that a total of 61 corps members have been kidnapped, with 18 of those
occurring between March 2022 and August 2023.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the
NYSC, Brig. Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has repeatedly stated that one of his
five-point policy thrusts was to “improve the security and welfare of corps
members and staff”.
As of the time of filing this report,
the NYSC had yet to make any statements detailing any attempts to rescue the
rest of the abducted corps members on or before the New Year.
Efforts to get comments from the NYSC
spokesperson, Eddy Megwa, on progress made so far, proved abortive on Sunday,
as he told our correspondent to visit the office to make any inquiries
regarding the issue.

Moroccans wave Palestinian flags at a
demonstration in support of Gaza
25th December 2023
More than 10,000 demonstrators marched
in Rabat on Sunday in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,
denouncing a "war of extermination" and the normalization of
relations between Morocco and Israel.
Called by a motley crew of supporters of
the Palestinian cause, including left-wing groups and militants from the
Islamist Justice and Charity movement, the demonstrators marched along Avenue
Mohammed V, the beating heart of the capital, under the slogan "stop the
war of extermination in Gaza, stop normalization".
Many of the protesters held up banners
denouncing the "destruction of hospitals" and the
"colonization" of the Palestinian territories.
"Free Palestine" and
"Save Gaza" were also proclaimed on placards.
Chanting slogans saluting the
"resistance of the Palestinian people", demonstrators notably
criticized US support for Israel in its war against Palestinian Hamas in the
Gaza Strip.
"When you bomb massively and
indiscriminately between military targets and civilians, including babies,
that's genocide. We have to call a spade a spade", condemned Jihan, a
27-year-old demonstrator.
The war in Gaza was triggered on October
7 after an unprecedented attack on Israeli soil by the Islamist movement Hamas,
which left 1,140 Israelis dead, according to the authorities.
According to the Hamas Ministry of
Health, the Israeli army's retaliatory operations resulted in 20,424 deaths.
In Rabat, Hachimi Damni, a demonstrator
in his sixties, "came to express his rejection" of the bombing of
civilians and "normalization with Israel".
Since the end of 2020, the kingdom has
forged all-out relations with Israel in return for US recognition of Morocco's
sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
Since the beginning of the war, several
large-scale demonstrations have taken place in Morocco to demand a repeal of
normalization, whereas before October 7, opposition to this process was
limited.
This normalization is a
"betrayal", chanted demonstrators on Sunday.
The kingdom officially denounced
"flagrant violations of the provisions of international and Moroccan
law".

Christmas: We’ll provide palliatives to
ease reform hardship —Tinubu
December 25, 2023
President Bola Tinubu has said that he
is aware of the present hardship faced by Nigerians engendered by the ongoing
reforms, but assured that his administration will continue to provide
palliatives to ease the effects.
In his Christmas message to Nigerians on
Sunday, he pointed out that the ongoing reforms are necessary and would be
followed by a new era of prosperity.
While noting that Christmas time
presents an opportunity for people of all faiths to enjoy the company of their
families, Tinubu reminded citizens of the need to reach out, as they celebrate,
to those who are disadvantaged by one circumstance or the other, to reflect the
best of Christ.
He also urged for prayers for members of
the armed forces who are daily risking their lives to protect the country.
The message reads: “For people of all
faiths, this is an opportunity to enjoy the company of family, celebrate life,
and delight in the gifts of love and friendship that make life worthwhile. This
is also a time to look out for each other because, amidst the festivities, this
time of year for many will be tinged with sadness: some mourning the loss of
loved ones and others grieving the hopes that failed to materialise and the
dreams that fell short.”
Former president, Dr Gooddluck Jonathan,
also congratulated Nigerians and
Christians around the world on this year’s Christmas Celebration.
In a statement released by his media
office on Sunday, Jonathan urged Christians to exhibit love, peace, humility
and sacrifice as they celebrate.
He noted that the birth of Jesus Christ
marks a new beginning and a new destiny for all believers, as it serves as the
fulfillment of many prophecies about the coming of the Saviour who will save
the word from sin and other difficulties.
Jonathan urged citizens to “make the
most of this season to rebuild our country by showing love to our neighbours
and upholding moral principles that will deepen the thread that binds us
together as a people.”
In the same vein, Senate President,
Godswill Akpabio, has said that in spite of the hard times Nigerians face
currently, they should continue to pray for peace and better days ahead for the
country.
Akpabio; his deputy, Senator Barau
Jibrin; Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Chairman, Senate Committee
on Appropriations, Senator Adeola Olamilekan and Senator Natasha
Akpoti-Uduaghan, all sent messages of felicitations to Nigerians on Sunday
ahead of the Christmas celebrations by Christians.
Akpabio acknowledged the pains caused by
the Federal Government’s decision to discontinue the fuel subsidy regime, but
said it was for the good of everyone, adding,
“Our today’s pain will surely produce
joyful gains in a very short time”
His Christmas message was contained in a
statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh,
on Sunday.
Akpabio admonished the Christian
faithful “To pray, fast and be hopeful because with the birth of Jesus Christ,
who is our symbol of hope, love and redemption, Nigeria will also overcome its
current challenges.”
He called for reflections on the teachings
of Jesus Christ, which he noted were anchored on love for neighbour, peaceful
coexistence and loyalty to constituted authorities.
“On behalf of my family and
constituents, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and indeed the
entire National Assembly, I wish to sincerely congratulate all our Christian
brothers and sisters on the celebration of the feast of Christmas, which marks
the birth of Jesus Christ.
“As you celebrate, I urge you not only
to merry, but also, continue to pray for our dear country Nigeria and our
leaders, show love to one another and continue to reflect on the life of Jesus
Christ, especially his humility, sacrifice, love for neighbour and loyalty to
God and constituted authority,” the statement quoted him as saying.
Similarly, the Speaker of the House of
Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen
Abbas, has called for prayers and supplication for Nigeria as Christians
celebrate this year’s Christmas.
He maintained that it is incumbent on
Nigerians to emulate the virtues of Jesus Christ, which he said included love,
sacrifice, peace making, tolerance, building consensus among the people,
selflessness, among others.
Also, a former vice president and
presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during last
general election, Atiku Abubakar, in his Christmas message, urged Nigerians to
embrace peace and unity at this period and to love one another for the sake of
progress and growth in the country.
He stated: “I felicitate all Nigerians, particularly the
Christian faithful on the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ. Christmas is a
time of love. Therefore, I call on all Nigerians to emulate the essence of this
season and unite for the greater good of our dear country.”
Former chairman of the Nigerian
Governors’ Forum (NGF) and a former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi,
admonished Nigerians to remain prayerful while extending goodwill among
themselves at Christmas.
The former governor, in a statement by his media office on Sunday,
said Nigerians need to celebrate Christmas in unity and peace, with the spirit
of generosity.
The statement signed by Mallam Ahmad
Sajoh, indicated that Fayemi acknowledged Nigerians’ resilience in the face of
challenges encountered throughout the
outgoing year.
He urged Nigerians to, in the spirit of
Christmas, come together in celebration, irrespective of religious or cultural
differences.
Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya
Bello, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Muhammed,
emphasised that the season symbolises hope for humanity, encouraging citizens
to maintain a positive outlook.
Beside, Osun State governor, Senator
Ademola Adeleke, felicitated Christians in Osun and beyond on the occasion of
this year’s Christmas celebration, urging them to draw from the spiritual import
of the celebration by sharing love and fostering harmony in communities.
Adeleke, who described Christmas as a
moment of reflection on the blessing that the birth of Jesus Christ symbolises
for humanity, charged Osun people, especially Christians, to embrace the spirit
of compassion and kindness that the season reflects.
Similarly, Ogun State governor, Prince
Dapo Abiodun and the senators representing Ogun East and West in the National
Assembly, Gbenga Daniel and Solomon Adeola, enjoined Nigerians to keep hope
alive for a greater and better country.
They stated this in their different
Christmas messages made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, on Sunday.
Abiodun urged Christians and Nigerians
not to allow the current economic challenges to dampen their spirit, saying
that there is hope of economic turnaround.
The governor, in a statement by his
Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adediran, also urged Nigerians to imbibe the
spirits of love, peace, and goodwill.
He said the current hardship in the
country occasioned by double digit inflation would soon give way as governments
at the federal and state levels fashion out ways to ensure economic recovery
and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
His counterpart in Niger State, Governor
Mohammed Umaru Bago, implored Christians
to show genuine love to all.
In a Christmas and New Year message
signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Bago identified
forgiveness, humility and genuine love to all as the hallmarks of the Christmas celebration,
adding that the Yuletide is a period for sober reflections, to bring about
positive change in society.
Similarly, the Ebonyi State governor,
Francis Nwifuru, called on Christians to combine faith with exemplary conduct
as they commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.
He gave the charge on Sunday in a
statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary Dr Monday Uzor, while
felicitating Christians as they celebrate a Christmas and New Year.
Also, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Lekan
Balogun, enjoined Christians to take proper lessons in the birth of Jesus
Christ as signified by the Christmas celebration.
This was contained in his Christmas
message, which was forwarded to journalists in Ibadan by his personal assistant
(media), Oladele Ogunsola, on Sunday.
The monarch recalled that the Biblical
accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ are full of lessons in tolerance,
patience and love.
In a move to ensure that Christian
community in Bauchi celebrate the Yuletide with joy, the state governor,
Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has approved the release of the sum of N120 million for the
purchase of food and other items.
The items are to be distributed to
different Christian groups under the umbrella of the Christian Association of
Nigeria (CAN) for the 2023 Christmas and New Year celebration across the state.
The disclosure was made by the chairman
of the distribution committee, Abdon Dallah Gin, while briefing journalists at
the Government House, Bauchi, on Saturday.
He explained that the items distributed
to the Christian community for the celebration of the Christmas included 66
cows, 102 rams, 1,438 (50kg) bags of
rice and 189 25kg groundnut oil.
A former presidential candidate, Mr
Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, felicitated with the Christian faithful and Nigerians at
large, as they join the rest of the world in celebrating Christmas.
In a statement by his media office in
Abuja at the weekend, Olawepo-Hashim urged Christians and Nigerians, in the
spirit of the season, to uphold the principles of love, tolerance and sacrifice
to sustain harmony, progress and advance the cause of humanity.
The All Progressives Congress (APC)
chieftain noted that the Christmas season represents joy, peace, hope, love,
goodwill, all which are much needed now that the country is battling diverse
challenges of development.
“I celebrate with the Christian fold and
enjoin all of us to remember the essence of Christmas. In the true spirit of
the season, let’s show love to our neighbours, kindness to the less-privileged
and vulnerable, and tolerance to one another across the lines of faith,
politics and ethnicity; in the spirit of the unique sacrifice and teachings of
our Lord, Jesus Christ,” Olawepo-Hashim remarked.
Former Senate president, Dr Bukola
Saraki, felicitated Christians on Christmas, just as he distributed cash and food items as palliative
to the faithful, party members, artisans, transporters, associations,
assemblies and other religious and community groups in Kwara State.
In a statement by his press officer on
local matters, Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, he said that the gesture was to ensure a
happy celebration in the face of the biting economic hardship.

Palestinians can destroy apartheid
regime like South Africans
Dec 24, 2023
TEHRAN, Dec. 24 (MNA) – The grandson of
former South African late president Nelson Mandela says Palestinians can
destroy the apartheid regime of Israel just like South Africans who overthrew
the apartheid regime of their country.
"Well, as my grandfather President
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela said, the Palestinian issue is the greatest moral
issue of our time, yet the entire global community is silent and mute on the
issue," Nkosi Zwelivelile “Mandla,” Mandela said in an interview with Mehr
News Agency Correspondent on the sidelines of the Tehran International
Conference on Palestine on Saturday.
"My grandfather said that for us,
as South Africans, our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the
Palestinian people," he said, adding that it's why the younger generation
continues to be the voice for the Palestinian struggle.
"We have come to fully understand
that the Palestinians, just like us in South Africa, had the right to resist
occupation," he said, noting that the Palestinians have decided not to
submit but have chosen to resist occupation.
Referring to the struggle of South
African people in resisting oppression, he said, "The Palestinians also
can be able to overthrow the brutal, apartheid regime of Israel just like we
were able in South Africa to collapse the apartheid regime of South
Africa."
Palestinians can destroy apartheid
regime like South Africans
"Well, the Islamic countries, in particular
the Arab League of Nations, can learn a lesson from the front-line state in the
SADC region in Africa," Mandela said, answering a question about the
cooperation of Islamic countries in preventing the Zionist regime's war crimes
in Gaza and help the Palestinian people.
"During our struggle for liberation
in South Africa, it was the front-line state being the neighboring countries
such as Mozambique, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, and Namibia, that
supported our liberation struggle. Today, we have attained our liberation
because of the support that we had from our front-line state," he said.
"And this is why we call on the
Arab League of nations and the entire Islamic countries in the region to also
support the Palestinian Resistance and the Palestinian struggle until we attain
liberation," he added.
