Communal Disharmony During The Holi Celebrations in UP: Jai Shree Ram Painted On Mosque, Holi Colours Thrown Despite Tarpaulin Cover

March 15, 2025

-------------

Despite the heavy security measures in Uttar Pradesh, a series of incidents aimed at creating communal disharmony have been reported during the Holi celebrations.

These events, particularly targeting mosques, have raised concerns about the potential for religious tensions in the state. On March 14, in the communally sensitive Sambhal district, a group of individuals allegedly vandalized a mosque by spraying colors and writing “Jai Shree Ram” on its entrance.

The mosque committee quickly filed a complaint at the Hayatnagar police station, naming individuals such as Veeresh, Brajesh, Satish, Harswaroop, Shivom, and Vinod as the culprits. In their complaint, the committee also accused the group of throwing colors inside the mosque, further disrespecting the sanctity of the religious space.

In a separate incident, in Aligarh, a similar act of provocation occurred during a Holi procession. A group of people, while celebrating the festival outside the Abdul Karim Masjid at Abdul Karim Chowk, attempted to throw color on the mosque, despite it being covered with tarpaulin to protect it from such acts.

The situation was made worse by the crowd’s provocative behavior, as they danced and sang to inflammatory songs while chanting communal slogans. This was seen as a deliberate attempt to stir tensions in the area and provoke the local Muslim community.

These incidents occurred despite extensive preparations by the authorities to maintain law and order. A day before the Holi celebrations, police in Sambhal conducted a flag march to reassure the public of their safety.

Additionally, drones were deployed to monitor both religious sites and areas of celebration, and at least 100 mosques were covered with tarpaulin to prevent any such occurrences. These security measures were put in place to prevent the escalation of communal violence during the sensitive time of religious observance.

While the state government and law enforcement agencies had taken steps to ensure peaceful Holi celebrations, these acts of provocation point to ongoing challenges in managing communal tensions.

The fact that such incidents were still able to occur raises questions about the effectiveness of security measures and the potential for future unrest in the region. — With Agencies Inputs

'Countries must commit to equal treatment of all their citizens': India at UN

Mar 15, 2025,

India has said it supports its fellow United Nations members in condemning acts of religious intolerance against Muslims, and emphasised the necessity to acknowledge religious discrimination as a widespread issue affecting all religions.

"We stand united with the UN membership in condemning incidents of religious intolerance against Muslims. However, it is also imperative to recognise that religious discrimination is a broader challenge that affects followers of all faiths," P Harish, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador, said on Friday, according to news agency PTI.

"We strongly believe that the path to meaningful progress lies in acknowledging that religio-phobia in its various forms threatens the fabric of our diverse, global society," he added.

Harish, who spoke at the informal UN General Assembly meeting to commemorate the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, began his address by extending greetings for the ongoing holy month of Ramadan, as well as Holi, which was celebrated in India and globally on Friday.

"India is a land of diversity and pluralism. We are home to followers of virtually every major religion in the world and the birthplace of four world religions namely Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. With over 200 million of its citizens practising Islam, India is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the world," he stated.

The Permanent Ambassador also expressed India's worries regarding increase in violence targeting religious sites and communities, and suggested this could only be addressed through consistent dedication and tangible actions from all Member States towards ensuring equal respect for all faiths.

"All countries must commit to equal treatment of all their citizens and not practice policies that promote religious discrimination. We must also ensure that the education system does not perpetuate stereotypes or encourage bigotry," Harish emphasised.

UN endorses OIC-backed resolution on Islamophobia

The UN General Assembly endorsed a resolution backed by 60 members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) designating March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

The resolution emphasised that terrorism and violent extremism should not be linked to any religion, nationality, civilisation, or ethnic group.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted in his message many Muslims observe Ramadan while experiencing 'fear of discrimination, exclusion, and even violence.'

Guterres highlighted the 'troubling' rise in anti-Muslim prejudice, ranging from discriminatory policies violating human rights to direct attacks on individuals and places of worship.

"This is part of a wider scourge of intolerance, extremist ideologies, and attacks against religious groups and vulnerable populations," he observed.

The UN chief stressed that an attack on one group threatens everyone's rights and freedoms.

Guterres called for global rejection of bigotry, emphasising that governments must promote social cohesion and protect religious freedom, while online platforms must address hate speech. "We must all speak out against bigotry, xenophobia, and discrimination."

Islamophobia ‘Most Alarming Manifestation’ Of Hate Speech, MWL Chief Tells UN

March 14, 2025

------------

NEW YORK: Islamophobia is one of the most alarming manifestations of hate speech, according to the head of the Muslim World League, who was speaking at the UN on Friday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, the MWL secretary-general, was the keynote speaker for the International Day to Combat Islamophobia at the UN General Assembly.

The event provided a platform for Al-Issa to highlight the growing concerns surrounding Islamophobia and its broader implications for global coexistence.

During his visit, Al-Issa also held bilateral talks with the President of the UN General Assembly Philemon Yang, discussing the rising trend of anti-Muslim sentiment and a range of other issues of mutual concern.

In his address, Al-Issa warned that the consequences of Islamophobia extend beyond the Muslim community to fuel extremism and social division. He stressed that such prejudice poses a fundamental challenge to inclusive citizenship, which is enshrined in democratic constitutions and international human rights principles.

He noted a concerning rise in discrimination against Muslims, including incidents of marginalization, barriers to integration, and denial of basic rights.

Exploring the root causes of Islamophobia, Al-Issa emphasized that the nearly 2 billion Muslims worldwide represent the true essence of Islam and actively engage with the world’s religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity.

He referenced the Qur’anic verse that calls for human understanding and unity, stating that Islam’s message is one of peace and coexistence.

Al-Issa also underscored that Islamophobia is not merely a religious issue but a global humanitarian challenge that threatens social harmony, asserting that defending Islam in this context was synonymous with defending universal human values.

He denounced political rhetoric that exploits fear for electoral gains and condemned media platforms that propagate divisive narratives.

Al-Issa called for an end to policies that sow fear and division, rejecting attempts to link terrorism with Islam. He also criticized extremists who manipulate religion for their own agendas, emphasizing that rejecting others simply because of their religious or ethnic differences is a dangerous mindset that must be challenged.

He urged the international community to take responsibility in fostering tolerance and understanding. He highlighted the role of educational and cultural institutions in shaping future generations, stressing that raising awareness among young people is crucial in countering hatred and misinformation.

Following his address, representatives from various UN member states took the floor, outlining their governments’ efforts to combat Islamophobia and promote social cohesion.

Taliban rejects Pakistan’s claim, says no connection between Baloch separatists and Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

March 14, 2025

The Taliban has rejected Pakistan’s claim, stating there is no connection between Baloch separatists and Afghanistan in the recent attack.

Three days after the Baloch Liberation Army’s attack on a passenger train in Balochistan, the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied any links to the separatist group. The Taliban dismissed Pakistan Army’s spokesperson’s claim about their involvement as “baseless.”

In a statement released on Thursday, March 13, the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs firmly rejected Pakistan’s accusation. They urged Pakistan to focus on resolving its internal security issues rather than making “irresponsible” remarks.

The Taliban emphasized that no members of the Baloch separatist militants are present in Afghanistan and that there is “no connection” between them and the separatist group. They also expressed regret over the loss of innocent lives in the attack, calling it unjustifiable to target civilians for political purposes.

Pakistan’s Army spokesperson, Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, had claimed in a press briefing that the train hijacking was planned and directed from Afghanistan. He stated that the militants were in contact with their facilitators and planners in Afghanistan via satellite phones during the operation.

On Tuesday, dozens of Baloch separatists had exploded a railway track, stopping the Jaffer Express, which was carrying over 400 passengers. They took several hostages in a remote mountainous area near the Afghanistan-Iran border. The Pakistani Army reported that snipers eliminated suicide bombers, and special forces killed 33 separatists while ensuring no harm came to the hostages. However, the Army confirmed that 23 hostages had already been killed by the Baloch militants before the operation began.

The Baloch Liberation Army’s attack has drawn widespread global condemnation, with many countries denouncing the hostage-taking of passengers and the attack on civilians. The BLA remains one of the largest groups fighting against the Pakistani government in Balochistan, a region rich in mineral resources and bordering Afghanistan and Iran.

This incident highlights the growing complexity of the situation in Balochistan, where various regional and international factors contribute to the ongoing violence. The need for a comprehensive approach to peace and security in the region has never been more urgent.

Head Of The Daesh In Iraq And Syria, “Abu Khadija”  Has Been Killed, Iraqi Prime Minister Says

March 14, 2025

---------------

BAGHDAD: The head of the Daesh in Iraq and Syria has been killed in Iraq in an operation by members of the Iraqi national intelligence service along with US-led coalition forces, the Iraqi prime minister announced Friday.

“The Iraqis continue their impressive victories over the forces of darkness and terrorism,” Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani said in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Abdallah Maki Mosleh Al-Rifai, or “Abu Khadija,” was “deputy caliph” of the militant group and as “one of the most dangerous terrorists in Iraq and the world,” the statement said.

A security official said the operation was carried out by an airstrike in Anbar province, in western Iraq. A second official said the operation took place Thursday night but that Al-Rifai’s death was confirmed Friday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

The announcement came on the same day as the first visit by Syria’s top diplomat to Iraq, during which the two countries pledged to work together to combat Daesh.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein said at a news conference that “there are common challenges facing Syrian and Iraqi society, and especially the terrorists of Daesh.” He said the officials had spoken “in detail about the movements of Daesh, whether on the Syrian-Iraqi border, inside Syria or inside Iraq” during the visit.

Hussein referred to an operations room formed by Syria, Iraq, Turkiye, Jordan and Lebanon at a recent meeting in Amman to confront Daesh, and said it would soon begin work.

The relationship between Iraq and Syria is somewhat fraught after the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. Al-Sudani came to power with the support of a coalition of Iran-backed factions, and Tehran was a major backer of Assad. The current interim president of Syria, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, was previously known as Abu Mohammed Al-Golani and fought as an Al-Qaeda militant in Iraq after the US invasion of 2003, and later fought against Assad’s government in Syria.

But Syrian interim Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shibani focused on the historic ties between the two countries.

“Throughout history, Baghdad and Damascus have been the capitals of the Arab and Islamic world, sharing knowledge, culture and economy,” he said.

Strengthening the partnership between the two countries “will not only benefit our peoples, but will also contribute to the stability of the region, making us less dependent on external powers and better able to determine our own destiny,” he said.

The operation and the visit come at a time when Iraqi officials are anxious about an Daesh resurgence in the wake of the fall of Assad in Syria.

While Syria’s new rulers — led by the Islamist former insurgent group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham — have pursued Daesh cells since taking power, some fear a breakdown in overall security that could allow the group to stage a resurgence.

The US and Iraq announced an agreement last year to wind down the military mission in Iraq of an American-led coalition fighting the Daesh group by September 2025, with US forces departing some bases where they have stationed troops during a two-decade-long military presence in the country.

When the agreement was reached to end the coalition’s mission in Iraq, Iraqi political leaders said the threat of Daesh was under control and they no longer needed Washington’s help to beat back the remaining cells.

But the fall of Assad in December led some to reassess that stance, including members of the Coordination Framework, a coalition of mainly Shiite, Iran-allied political parties that brought current Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia Al-Sudani to power in late 2022.

Mosque gate ‘rammed’, slogans raised in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri during celebrations on Holi eve

 March 15, 2025

Police in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district have booked several youth after the gates of a mosque were allegedly rammed multiple times during a traditional celebration on the eve of Holi.

The alleged incident took place in Rajapur village, nearly 400 kms south of Mumbai, during the Shimga festival, or Madachi miravnuk, a Konkani ritual that involves carrying a tree trunk to the Dhopeshwar temple.

Locals alleged that on Thursday, the group carrying the tree trunk to the temple rammed it into the mosque gate several times while raising provocative slogans. Several videos of the alleged incident were also circulated on social media, with some captions alleging the group was trying to force their way into the mosque.

A local resident, asking not to be named, said: “…While the miravnuk (procession) is an old custom in Konkan (region), but this time around we were shocked that they rammed the trunk into the gate. The gate was then locked, but they rammed the trunk again. Some people were also raising aggressive slogans which vitiated the atmosphere.”

Ratnagiri SP Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “Some youngsters in front of the procession, who were under the influence of alcohol, behaved aggressively and chanted slogans outside the mosque. We have registered an FIR against them under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act as they defied prohibitory orders issued by the administration.”

SP Kulkarni said the incident “prima facie does not appear to be planned”. “Actually there was a large crowd and due to the momentum from the back, the trunk was propelled forwards,” he said.

Another officer, who did not wish to be named, said: “Some elements used these videos with misleading captions trying to create communal discord. Our team tracked down a Worli-based person who had uploaded such a video and made him delete it. We are deciding if any legal action should be taken against him.”

Kanifnath Yatra: Hawkers, rights bodies ask Bombay HC Chief Justice to intervene in Madhi panchayat stand against Muslims

by Soham Shah

March 14, 2025

Thirty-four hawker unions, human rights organisations, and political party wings have written to the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court requesting urgent intervention against a gram panchayat resolution that banned Muslim traders from setting up shops at the Kanifnath Yatra in Madhi, Ahilyanagar district.

The letter on March 13 cited a report by The Indian Express published on March 12 that showed how Muslim vendors were uncertain about whether they would be allowed to set up shop in the Yatra even after the resolution was invalidated by the local Block Development Officer.

The Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court on March 11 stayed the effect, operation, and execution of the resolution.

The month-long Kanifnath Yatra coincides with Holi festival and has historically seen vendors irrespective of religious affiliation, setting up stalls.

Maharashtra minister Nitish Rane had arrived at the village on March 2 with NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap to lend support to the resolution.

The letter states, “However, in spite of the aforesaid order dated 11th March 2025, the Sarpanch Sanjay Markad has made statements in the media that since that resolution was invalidated by the BDO, they will pass another resolution but will not allow Muslim vendors to do business…A fear persists among the Muslim vendors, who have arrived in Madhi village with their wares and stocks bought for sale at the fair and will suffer grave losses if they do not put up their stalls.”

The letter was issued by National Hawkers Federation, Shahid Bhagat Singh Hawkers Union Mumbai, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) Maharashtra, All India Professionals Congress, National Federation of Indian Women Maharashtra, Kamgar Ekta Union, and 28 other organisations.

The activists have urged the Chief Justice to intervene by issuing directions to authorities to take all measures to ensure compliance with the order by the Aurangabad Bench of the High Court and to “ensure that no direct and/or indirect attempts are made to impose any unconstitutional ban on Muslim vendors or prevent them from doing business at the Kanifnath Yatra.”

Tejasvi Surya blasts Karnataka government over 4% Muslim quota in tenders, calls it a 'threat to the Constitution'

Mar 15, 2025

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has strongly criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government for approving a 4 per cent reservation for Muslim contractors in government tenders, calling it “an attack on the Constitution” and a move that “incentivizes religious conversion.”

Reacting to the decision, Surya said that reservations in India have always been based on social and economic backwardness rather than religion. “This new gimmick for electoral gains is equal to undoing the very purpose of reservation,” he remarked.

He further accused the Congress government of misusing power and public resources for vote bank politics, arguing that such policies would turn the economy into a “playground for political opportunism.”

The Karnataka Cabinet has approved amendment to the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act which aims to provide four per cent reservation in tenders to Muslim contractors.

Earlier on March 7, Chief Minsiter Siddaramaiah confirmed that four per cent of public works contracts will now be reserved for Muslims under a category called Category-II B, while presenting Karnataka government's Budget.

The decision was taken on Friday in a meeting was held at the Cabinet Hall of the Vidhan Sabha, chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and it was decided that the amendment will be done after tabling the KTPP act in the ongoing assembly session, the official sources added.

The Cabinet has approved the presentation of the obedience in the same session likely on Monday.

Reservation will be provided in the procurement of goods and services under various government departments, corporations, and institutions for suppliers belonging to SC, ST, Category-I, Category-II A, and Category-II B, up to ₹1 crore, in which Category-II B refers to Muslims.

Over 4,000 cases of Waqf Property encroachment filed across Karnataka: Zameer Ahmed Khan

March 14, 2025

Karnataka’s Housing, Waqf, and Minority Welfare Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan has highlighted significant encroachments on properties registered with the state Waqf Board, with over 4,100 cases filed across various districts.

These properties, including mosques, dargahs, kabristans, ashurkhanas, and idgahs, are vital for religious, educational, and social services, yet many have been encroached upon.

In response to this issue, the state government has provided a substantial financial support package for Waqf-related initiatives. Over the past five years, it allocated a total of Rs 528 crore in annual grants to the Waqf Board.

The funds distributed include Rs 125 crore in 2019-20, Rs 87 crore in 2020-21, Rs 96 crore in 2021-22, Rs 93 crore in 2022-23, and Rs 127 crore in 2023-24, as reported by the Indian Express.

Despite these efforts, only a small portion of the encroachment issue has been resolved. Of the 4,108 cases filed, the Waqf Board has successfully reclaimed 371 acres of encroached land. However, the dispute over Waqf land ownership has sparked controversy, particularly in cases where the Board has claimed farmers’ lands as its own, issuing eviction notices.

These actions have led to legal battles and protests. A prominent example occurred in October 2024 when farmers in Honawad village, Vijayapura district, received eviction notices declaring approximately 1,500 acres of their ancestral land as Waqf property. The government later acknowledged the error and clarified that only 11 acres belonged to the Waqf Board, assuring that the wrongful notices would be withdrawn.

In Vijayapura, 388 cases related to Waqf encroachment have been filed, but only two cases have resulted in successful evictions. On a broader scale, only eight cases linked to Waqf encroachment have been filed in the state, with no evictions taking place. Although 1,935 cases have been disposed of, which represents about 47% of the total, the remaining 2,173 cases are still pending with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or enquiry officer. Additionally, 76 cases are stuck in various courts, further delaying resolution.

Kalaburagi leads the state with 562 cases of encroachment, followed by Bengaluru Urban with 418, Vijayapura with 388, Bidar with 309, and Bellary with 274. Kalaburagi has made notable progress, with 394 out of 562 cases resolved. Tumakuru, in particular, has demonstrated impressive efficiency, with an 85% clearance rate, having resolved 242 out of 284 cases.

However, despite these efforts, the legal complexities surrounding Waqf property disputes have contributed to a substantial backlog at the Karnataka Waqf Tribunal (KWT). Currently, 112 cases are pending at the tribunal, with districts like Vijayapura, Tumakuru, and Bidar facing the highest tribunal involvement.

Although 1,935 cases have been legally resolved, the actual execution of these orders remains low, with only 179 cases successfully carried out. Furthermore, 1,485 cases are still awaiting enforcement action, particularly in districts like Bengaluru Urban, Bidar, and Yadgir.

Historically, the mismanagement of Waqf properties has been a longstanding issue. A 2012 report by the Karnataka State Minorities Commission revealed that approximately 27,000 acres of Waqf land, valued at Rs 2 lakh crore, had been misappropriated or illegally allocated, often involving politicians and board members colluding with real estate developers. This ongoing issue has compounded the difficulties in resolving the current encroachment cases. — With Agencies Inputs

Friday prayers conclude in Sambhal’s Shahi Jama Masjid amid tight security

March 14, 2025

Holi celebrations in Sambhal on Friday have remained peaceful and the planned processions on the festival were taken out across the city under heavy security without any problem, according to media reports.

At the same time, namaz was also offered in different mosques in the city. At 2:30 p.m., worshippers gathered at the Shahi Jama Masjid to offer prayers on the second Friday of Ramzan.

Meanwhile, a large Holi procession passed near the mosque, with around 3,000 people participating. To maintain law and order, a heavy police deployment was in place throughout the city.

Police Officer Anuj Chaudhary expressed satisfaction with the peaceful proceedings, according to reports.

“People have celebrated Holi with great harmony in Sambhal. There have been no reports of any disturbances. Worshippers offered namaz without any issues,” he said.

“Local communities took the initiative to cover mosques themselves. I thank Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for ensuring law and order,” he added.

Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi also highlighted the cooperative spirit in the region.

“Everything is going on peacefully and with affection. People here are fostering brotherhood. The diligent efforts of the Sambhal police have paid off,” he remarked.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vandana Mishra confirmed that both the Holi processions and Friday prayers were held without any issues, thanks to the cooperation of the local community in keeping the peace. “Along with Holi, the Juma namaz was performed peacefully. We have managed to celebrate both things peacefully. The processions were also carried out peacefully. Everyone cooperated. This gives the message that peace remains in Sambhal,” Mishra told PTI.

“Thanks to the teamwork of our administration and security personnel, everything proceeded smoothly,” she said.

Sambhal DM Rajender Pensiya said, “People celebrated Holi with traditional fervour. More than 60 processions were taken out in the city under tight security.”

Given the overlap of Holi and Friday prayers, authorities had issued an alert across the state, with special arrangements made in Sambhal to prevent any untoward incidents. A strong police presence and community cooperation ensured that both Holi festivities and Ramzan prayers were observed without disruption.

The peaceful celebrations are significant in light of tensions in Sambhal following communal riots on November 24 last year, which were triggered by an Archaeological Survey of India survey of a Mughal-era Shahi Jama mosque. — With IANS Inputs

Muslim youngster arrested for commenting on controversial remarks made by Sambhal officer; forced to record apology from jail

A Muslim youth was arrested after he criticised the controversial remarks made by Anuj Kumar Chowdhury, a cop from Sambhal regarding Muslims.

Aabad Shah, a resident of Kamalpur village in Shahpur Nagar panchayat in Muzaffarnagar had tweeted on X demanding the arrest of the officer who had asked Muslims to stay indoors during Holi if they have any problem. He had also remarked that if Muslims happen to go out, they must not object if colours are thrown at them.

In his reaction Aabad posted  on X, “ Bakrid comes once a year. Those who think that seeing meat and blood will corrupt their religion should stay at home. #ArrestAnujChaudhry.”

Soon after his tweet, he was arrested by the police. He was then forced to shoot an apology video from jail.

In the video, Aabad can be heard seeking forgiveness from the police and that he will not repeat such a mistake again.

He says, “I respect the police department. I seek forgiveness from the police and I will never make such remarks again.”

After an anonymous voice from behind prompts him to say that not only will he never repeat it, but he will ask others to not make any similar remarks, he responds affirmatively and reiterates the statement.

The Sambhal cop’s remarks were received with wide criticism, although Yogi Adityanath backed his statements by calling him a “Pehelwan”. Yogi supported his idea and said that Muslims should offer prayers at home during Holi.

Clash erupts during Holi procession in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur, police deny lathi-charge

Piyush Srivastava

15.03.25

Two groups of participants at the Holi Laat Sahab procession clashed in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur over an unknown issue and hurled shoes

and stones at police when they intervened.

Video footage aired by TV channels and shared on social media showed the troublemakers fleeing the spot and the police caning a biker coming from the opposite direction.

Rajesh S, deputy inspector-general of Shahjahanpur, denied any lathi-charge. “There were 4-5 boys who were creating trouble and the police were driving them away. It is a rumour on social media that the police lathi-charged.”

Police sources said some youths in the procession had started fighting with each other. “First, a group attacked a youth. Later some people came to his rescue and a full-fledged fight broke out. However, they fled from the spot when the cops reached there,” said a policeman who didn’t want to be named. No arrests have been made yet.

In Sambhal, considered one of the communally sensitive places in the state, Holi and Friday prayers passed peacefully amid heavy security. The state government had deployed over 1,000 police and paramilitary personnel who conducted flag marches even though over 1,000 potential troublemakers were confined to their houses.

The Holi procession concluded at 1.30pm and Muslims offered Jumma Namaz at 2.30pm, 90 minutes after the usual time.

Shrish Chandra, additional superintendent of police, told reporters: “Two roads leading to Shahi Jama Masjid were barricaded and the façade of 10 mosques in the city were covered with tarpaulin for a peaceful Holi procession.”

'We will not run, we are not cowards': AIMIM chief Assadudin Owaisi questions calls for Muslims to stay indoors during Holi

Mar 15, 2025

AIMIM chief Assadudin Owaisi on Friday criticized calls for Muslims to stay indoors or cover themselves during Holi, asserting the community's strength by saying, "We will not run, we are not cowards."

"Some say if you're so scared, you should not offer namaz and stay indoors. They say just like we have covered our mosques, we must cover ourselves also, or else stay indoors," Owaisi said while addressing a gathering at Chowk-e-Masjid in Telangana's Hyderabad.

His remarks were in response to statements by some officials advising Muslims to remain indoors if they did not want to be colored during Holi.

In Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, Circle Officer Anuj Chaudhary had on March 6 suggested that those uncomfortable with colours should stay inside, a comment later backed by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Several mosques in Uttar Pradesh were covered with tarpaulin on orders from the local administration to prevent any untoward incidents during Holi celebrations.

"Those who migrated to Pakistan were cowards. We will not run, we are not cowards. A Chief Minister said Jumma namaz can be offered at home as well... Who is he to tell us what we can and cannot do?" Owaisi added.

This year, Holi coincided with the second Jumma namaz (Friday prayers) of Ramzan on March 14. Security forces conducted flag marches and set up checkpoints to ensure peaceful celebrations across several states.

In UP's Sambhal, Holi festivities and prayers were observed peacefully under tight security. Sambhal Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vandana Mishra praised the cooperation among communities, saying that peaceful celebrations "sent a strong message of harmony."

District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia also spoke about the cooperation of people in Sambhal, which was affected by violence in November last year.

"All are happy, and they are playing Holi by applying colours to one another. We are getting cooperation from everyone," the District Magistrate said.

Circle Officer Anuj Chowdhary led a flag march along with other police personnel to ensure the law and order situation in the district.

Circle officer Chaudhary said the police monitored the situation through foot patrolling and drone surveillance."We are conducting foot-patrolling and drone surveillance", he told on Friday.

Other than police, paramilitary forces also conducted a flag march in Sambhal, whereas the administration used drones to monitor the situation in the district properly. Earlier, Sambhal MP Zia ur Rehman Barq urged people of all communities to maintain peace and harmony ahead of the Jumma and Holi celebrations.

Cabinet approves bills on B-khatas, quota for Muslims in contracts

Mar 14, 2025,

Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah's cabinet Thursday approved three key bills, including The Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which aims to bring nearly 90 lakh unauthorised properties into the tax net by issuing B-khatas. The decision, applicable to urban and rural areas outside Bengaluru, will enable gram panchayats collect property tax while ensuring these properties are not regularised.

The cabinet also cleared The Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which proposes 4% reservation for Muslim contractors in govt tenders up to Rs 1 crore, and The Agricultural Sciences Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which facilitates the establishment of an integrated agriculture-horticulture university at VC Farm in Mandya district.

The govt had launched a three-month statewide drive from Feb 10 to issue B-khatas through urban and rural local bodies. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) already which issues B-khatas to unauthorised properties in its jurisdiction.

While urban development bodies have already begun issuing e-Swathu registrations through urban local bodies, the rural development and panchayat raj (RDPR) department has also commenced the process. With the cabinet nod, an amendment bill will be tabled in the ongoing legislative session.

"The new law will serve two purposes — ensure revenue for gram panchayats and keep development of unauthorised properties and layouts in check," said RDPR minister Priyank Kharge. "We will provide B-khatas to collect property tax since rural local bodies offer civic amenities. But this does not mean that unauthorised properties are being regularised."

Fulfilling a budget announcement, CM Siddaramaiah pushed forward a proposal granting 4% reservation for Muslim contractors in govt civil contracts up to Rs 1 crore. The Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was approved by the cabinet and is expected to be tabled in the assembly early next week.

Despite criticism over its move to merge nine out of 10 new universities established by the previous BJP govt, the govt is forging ahead with the establishment of an integrated agriculture-horticulture university in Mandya. The govt said the new university would not alter the status of existing institutions such as University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK Bengaluru; Dharwad Agricultural University; Bagalkot Horticulture University; Shimoga Agriculture-Horticulture University; and Raichur University of Agricultural Sciences.

"While we want to establish an integrated agriculture-horticulture university in Mandya as it's in the Cauvery basin, the objective of the new legislation is to allot the area and colleges to the new university. Agriculture colleges in Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Kodagu, and Mandya and the horticulture college in Mysuru will be brought under the new university," said N Cheluvarayaswamy, agriculture minister.

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah updated cabinet members on Justice Nagamohan Das Commission submitting its report on 40% commission allegations against the previous BJP govt. Justice Das handed over the report to the CM Wednesday, and the cabinet is expected to deliberate on it in its next meeting.

Jeddah’s Islamic Arts Biennale celebrates Ramadan with Biennale Nights

NADA HAMEED

March 14, 2025

JEDDAH: The Diriyah Biennale Foundation has unveiled Biennale Nights, a special Ramadan program at the Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah.

Held at the Western Hajj Terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport, the event runs until May 25, offering visitors a cultural and spiritual experience that celebrates the holy month while showcasing Saudi Arabia’s rich Islamic heritage.

During Ramadan, visitors can take part in workshops featuring Arabic calligraphy and traditional craftsmanship, as well as interactive experiences exploring the artistic expressions associated with the holy month.

Sharing his experience, Ahmed Ramadan told Arab News: “This was my first time visiting the Islamic Arts Biennale, but I had planned to go for a while. When they announced the Ramadan events, I got even more excited. I feel that there is a strong connection between Ramadan activities and Islamic arts. I came with a group of friends, and we found many activities that suited young people.”

He added: “We played some group games, enjoyed a variety of food, including traditional Saudi dishes and Ramadan sweets popular in the western region. Honestly, it was a wonderful experience.

“The timing, in the middle of Ramadan, was ideal, after the initial days of the month, which are usually packed with family gatherings and invitations. It was a great opportunity for my friends and me to come together in such a unique place.”

Running from March 6-15, the Ramadan Market welcomes visitors daily from 8 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., offering a vibrant mix of activities and attractions.

Guests can explore an array of international cuisines, indulge in specialty delicacies like dates, honey and chocolates, and enjoy traditional beverages such as Karak and Arabic coffee.

The market also features henna art, storytelling sessions for children and game wagons, creating an engaging atmosphere for families.

Adding to the festive spirit, live music and cultural performances take place, while visitors can find unique Ramadan-themed gifts at the Biennale Design Store.

For many, the Ramadan Market has been a memorable experience.

Walaa Ali, a visitor from Jeddah, said: “The venue offered a diverse range of activities specifically designed for the holy month of Ramadan. What made these activities special was how well they aligned with the spirit of the month, covering various disciplines and formats — some were workshops, others were entertainment spaces and some featured food.”

Rowa Haddad from Makkah said: “I found it to be the perfect place to visit with my family. The venue offers a variety of activities that cater to all family members, and what makes it even more special is the spiritual Islamic theme that fits both the location and the essence of this holy month. That’s why visiting this place was an excellent choice for us.”

In partnership with the Red Sea Film Foundation, the biennale also presents a curated selection of film screenings, delving into themes of resilience, faith and identity from across the Islamic world.

These experiences offer visitors a meaningful way to engage with art, culture and heritage, blending traditional Islamic aesthetics with contemporary artistic expression.

The Ramadan Market offers iftar and suhoor options, including curated iftar menus for pre-booked gatherings featuring dishes inspired by Saudi and Middle Eastern cuisines.

The Islamic Arts Biennale serves as a global platform for dialogue and exploration of Islamic arts. It is held at the Western Hajj Terminal in Jeddah, an award-winning architectural site that has long served as a gateway for pilgrims traveling to Makkah and Madinah.

The first biennale welcomed more than 600,000 visitors, and the second expands on this success with an even richer program.

The Ramadan events are open to all biennale visitors. Registration is available through the official website at biennale.org.sa.

Japan ambassador hosts iftar for Saudi alumni of Japanese universities

RASHID HASSAN

March 14, 2025

RIYADH: The Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia Yasunari Morino hosted an iftar at the Cultural Palace in the Diplomatic Quarter, welcoming Saudi alumni of Japanese universities and academic institutions.

In his opening remarks, the ambassador expressed his appreciation for sharing this sacred moment of Ramadan with the guests and extended warm wishes for peace, joy, and harmony on the auspicious occasion.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Saudi Arabia — a milestone in the enduring partnership between the two nations.

Morino acknowledged the invaluable role of Saudi alumni of Japanese universities in strengthening bilateral ties, and emphasized the Japanese Embassy’s deep appreciation for their continued support in fostering lasting friendship and cooperation.

Speaking to Arab News Morino said: “It is my honor to receive all good friends of our Embassy, those Saudis who have experienced studying in Japan. This year marks the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations so we consider those Saudis as good friends for Japan. Their contribution has been enormous in the cordial relations, and we appreciate their continued support for deepening Japan-Saudi relations.”

The ambassador highlighted the latest high-level visits and ministerial meetings that led to tangible progress in key areas such as economy, energy, and technological cooperation.

In his opening remarks he also noted the growing presence of Japanese companies in Saudi Arabia and their business activities seeking new opportunities for mutual growth and collaboration.

Regarding cultural exchange, the ambassador highlighted the remarkable success of the Japanese cultural event “Nihon Matsuri” held last year, which approximately 8,000 people visited, as representing increasing interest in Japan among the Saudi people.

He also praised the success of the Japanese Speech Contest, where many talented participants demonstrated their outstanding language skills.

Looking ahead to the Osaka-Kansai Expo this April, the ambassador reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to easing visa requirements for Saudi citizens and residents by introducing electronic tourist visas, multiple-entry visas, and visa exemption for Saudi diplomatic and special passport holders.

He expressed his hope that these measures will further promote tourism, business, and educational exchanges between the two countries.

During the iftar, attendees reconnected with fellow alumni, exchanged views on deepening their network, and reaffirmed their commitment to further enhancing Japan-Saudi relations.

Majed Abualola, who studied in Japan from 2014-2024 and now works as a business development manager in SBI Middle East, a pivotal bridge for investment opportunities between Japan and the Middle East, told Arab News: “I am grateful to the ambassador for this opportunity to interact with old friends and alumni from Japanese institutions. It is a good opportunity for networking and connecting with them.”

Saudi writer Dr. Khalid Al-Rashoud, who studied in Japan and has written two books on Saudi-Japanese relations, told Arab News: “As a Saudi graduate of Japanese universities, attending the Japanese Embassy’s iftar felt like a reunion, a continuation of the cultural bridge I have been fortunate to walk across. It’s truly heartwarming to see the Embassy’s dedication to honoring Ramadan, creating an atmosphere of shared respect and understanding.

“The familiar flavors of iftar, combined with the subtle touches of Japanese hospitality, made for a truly memorable evening,” said Al-Rashoud.

“It’s a testament to the strong and evolving relationship between Saudi Arabia and Japan, a connection built on mutual appreciation and genuine friendship. I am always grateful to witness and participate in these moments that beautifully weave together our cultures,” he added.

Layali Diriyah 2025 and Minzal: A celebration of heritage, innovation, and art

RAHAF JAMBI

March 14, 2025

RIYADH: Layali Diriyah returns for a third year — set against a historic landscape — as the open-air event celebrates Saudi Arabia’s past, present, and future.

The event, from February to April, focuses on three themes: heritage and craftsmanship; education and knowledge; and nature.

More than just a cultural event, Layali Diriyah is an immersive journey that blends heritage with artistic legacy. Since its debut in January 2023, it has attracted more than 110,000 visitors.

Led by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, this initiative highlights the transformation of Saudi Arabia’s founding place.

The retreat combines gastronomy, retail, art and entertainment on a picturesque palm tree farm near At-Turaif, the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Visitors can take a culinary journey featuring eight restaurants, a retail village, and five stages presenting predominantly local talent.

A standout feature this year is the Chef’s Table, where high-profile chefs present live cooking demonstrations for groups of up to 23 guests. Each restaurant offers distinct themes, ranging from circular pods nestled among trees for privacy to mudbrick-inspired grilling stations, enhancing the dining experience with cultural resonance.

Installations by local and international artists play a central role in Layali Diriyah. Khulod Albugami’s “Lahauj,” inspired by Najdi architectural windows, symbolizes a bridge between past and present. Dr. Saad Al-Huwaidi’s “Three Golden Stages” narrates the evolution of Saudi identity through the use of “Qitan,” a material from traditional garments representing pivotal moments in the country’s history.

Hibah Albakree, managing partner and co-founder of Designlab Experience, expressed her excitement about the event. “One of the things that is really nice about Layali Diriyah is the familiarity of the guest journey. Each year, it repeats, giving guests a sense of comfort. If you have to turn left instead of right, people might wonder why it’s different. This familiarity is the anchor of the project.”

As guests navigate the event, they encounter an enchanting display of lights. “Layali is always about lights,” Albakree said.

This year, the lighting has evolved significantly. “In the first year, we used vibrant flowers to create a blooming effect. The second year (we) elevated the lights to highlight the palm trees. This year, we are using oversized lighting elements inspired by local flora, such as palm trees,” she said.

The art installations are not merely decorative, they tell stories deeply woven into Saudi culture. For instance, Zahara Alghamdi’s “Birth of a Place” is an elegy to Diriyah’s ancestral foundations through sculptural clay forms that symbolize cycles of destruction and rebirth.

Minzal, another project developed by Designlab Experience in Diriyah, complements Layali Diriyah. Set in the historic birthplace of Saudi Arabia, Minzal offers an innovative cultural retreat that harmonizes with the rugged landscape. It features diverse experiences such as stargazing, horseriding, live performances, and luxury glamping, all while integrating Saudi heritage.

Yvonne Hoffzimmer, chief operating officer of Designlab Experience, said: “We have three distinct areas: glamping, interactive workshops, and hospitality. It’s a casual, relaxed outdoor experience, allowing guests to spend several hours enjoying the atmosphere. While Layali is typically a shorter experience, Minzal invites guests to immerse themselves fully.”

Minzal has areas for glamping and stargazing, while Birwaz is a vibrant community space for cultural and commercial activities, featuring workshops, food kiosks, and performance zones.

“The architectural language employs mud-textured finishes and colorful geometries, creating a tactile narrative of the region's legacy,” Hoffzimmer said.

Almashab invites social interaction around a central bonfire, with shisha lounges and tensile structures, providing a space for guests to gather and unwind. The stargazing station features intimate pods designed for celestial exploration, allowing visitors to enjoy astronomy sessions while savoring Saudi coffee.

Layali Diriyah 2025 and Minzal are more than mere festivals, they are celebrations of Saudi identity, innovation and art, presenting the Kingdom’s rich cultural tapestry while paving the way for future artistic endeavors.

Security beefed up near CPB office as leaders, activists protest Magura rape

 Mar 15, 2025

Security has tightened in front of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) office following calls by an expatriate online activist to besiege the party office.

A good number of police and army personnel were seen taking position in front of the office.

Amid the presence of law enforcement agencies, the CPB hoisted a black flag in front of the party office at 10:40am as part of its scheduled programme, protesting the rape of an eight-year-old girl in Magura and demanding punishment for the perpetrators.

CPB President Mohammad Shah Alam hoisted the flag and addressed the gathering, calling for exemplary punishment for those involved in the rape of Magura girl and justice for all cases of rape and violence against women across the country.

Earlier in the day, CPB leaders and activists began arriving at the office in the morning, carrying party flags to protect the office from potential attacks.

Some had stayed overnight to ensure its safety.

Meanwhile, progressive student bodies and cultural organisations held a brief rally at Central Shaheed Minar around 11:40am, demanding the resignation of Home Adviser Jahangir Alam and justice for the eight-year-old Magura girl, as well as accountability for all killings, rapes, and acts of violence against women across the country.

They said the home adviser has failed to ensure the security of the people, especially girls and women, particularly from mobs, and that he has lost all rights to remain in office.

Therefore, they demanded the resignation of the home adviser and all those who are "incapable" of fulfilling their responsibilities properly.

Following the rally, the organisers are scheduled to bring out a mass procession from Shaheed Minar to press home their demand.

Mar 15, 2025

A group of students from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) protested on campus yesterday against the bail granted to three accused in the murder case of Mohtassim Masud.

Masud, a second-year student at Buet, was killed two and a half months ago when a private car hit a motorcycle on the 300-feet road in Narayanganj's Rupganj.

At a protest rally, the students, who have been demonstrating for several days, placed a six-point demand, including reconsideration of the bail granted to the accused

Other demands include a comprehensive and impartial investigation and a travel ban on the accused, as they are influential individuals.

The protesters vowed to continue their movement until justice is served.

"Our peaceful protests and democratic programs will continue until the entire incident is thoroughly investigated and justice is ensured," said one of the protesting students.

Expressing frustration over the verdict, the deceased's father, Masud Mia, told The Daily Star, "My son was killed by a reckless, unlicensed driver while standing near the footpath. Section 302 should be included in the case."

Advocate Mohammad Noor Hossain echoed the sentiment, saying, "The case should be brought under Section 302. However, Sections 98, 99, and 105 have been applied, which is unexpected."

Refugee Rehab: Yunus for transparency in Khurushkul project

Mar 15, 2025

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus yesterday emphasised a transparent listing process, proper distribution of responsibilities, and accountability regarding the Khurushkul Climate Refugee Rehabilitation Project.

"It must be ensured that those who are supposed to be rehabilitated are actually moving into the houses. We need to carefully monitor whether anyone else is occupying them unlawfully, bypassing regulations. Constructing buildings is just a matter of funding, but if we fail to achieve the intended purpose, the entire effort becomes meaningless," he said while visiting the project area in Cox's Bazar, reports UNB.

"For a long time, rampant corruption has taken place. Those who were supposed to benefit were deprived, while certain preferred individuals were given access. Financial transactions were also involved. But those who had rightful claims did not receive their due," he added.

"Proper oversight is necessary, and everyone's responsibilities must be clearly defined," he also said.

The chief adviser also exchanged views with locals at the BIAM auditorium in Cox's Bazar yesterday.

At the event, he said Bangladesh's people are lucky to be connected by the Bay, which helps promote trade with different countries. "The sea is very crucial for business," he said, reports BSS.

Iftar event: One dies, 4 injured in stampede in Rohingya camp

Mar 15, 2025

An elderly Rohingya man was killed and four others were injured in a stampede during an iftar event in Cox's Bazar yesterday.

The event was attended by an estimated 100,000 refugees, who broke their fast alongside the visiting UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

The incident occurred around 2:30pm at the helipad area of Kutupalong camp.

The deceased is 43-year-old Neyamot Ullah, a resident of Camp-4.

Of the injured, two were treated and discharged, while the other two remain hospitalised in stable condition, according to a press release issued by the Chief Adviser's Press Wing last night.

According to UNB, two of the injured are Asmat Ullah and Kalim Ullah. Asmat Ullah was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Muhammad Arif Hossain, officer-in-charge of Ukhiya police station, told UNB that three people were injured after falling from the hillside while attending the iftar gathering. One of them later died.

Chief Adviser Prof Yunus expressed his condolences over the death and ordered an investigation into the incident.

"We are deeply saddened to report the death of a member of the Rohingya community as he came to join the congregation. Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased," reads the CA press wing release.

According to the statement, despite extensive security measures, four people, including Neyamot Ullah, sustained injuries while attempting to join the gathering. They were rushed to nearby hospitals. Ullah was later pronounced dead.

A postmortem will determine the cause of his death, said the release.

Hamas: Enemy's prevention of Itikaf (seclusion) at Al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday night is dangerous escalation of its religious war

14 Mar 2025

The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, considered the Zionist enemy's prevention of Palestinians from performing Itikaf (seclusion) at Al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday night for the second time a dangerous escalation of its religious war.

The movement said in a press statement on Friday that "the enemy's continued aggression and arbitrary measures aimed at oppressing the Palestinian people during the holy month of Ramadan, and its prevention of worshippers performing Itikaf (seclusion) at Al-Aqsa Mosque for the second time, constitutes a dangerous escalation of its religious war, a systematic targeting of Muslim rituals, and an escalation of the Judaization campaign targeting Jerusalem and its holy sites."

Arab American mayors in Michigan nominated by Trump as ambassador to Kuwait and Tunisia

RAY HANANIA

March 15, 2025

CHICAGO: Amer Ghalib, the mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, said on Friday he was “honored” to be nominated by President Donald Trump for the post of US ambassador to Kuwait.

Meanwhile, Bill Bazzi, the mayor of Dearborn Heights, also in Michigan, was nominated by Trump this week to serve as the US envoy to Tunisia.

Arab American Muslims Ghalib and Bazzi were among the Michigan officials who publicly endorsed Trump for the presidency last year over Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

“It’s a great honor to have the trust of the president placed in me to represent our great county and serve as the next ambassador to the State of Kuwait,” Ghalib told Arab News on Friday.

“I will utilize my skills, Arabic language, cultural understanding and diverse background to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. I’m excited about my next chapter in my journey and I’ll make the American people proud of me.”

Ghalib, who became mayor of Hamtramck in November 2021, is the first Arab American and Muslim to hold the office in the city, which has a Muslim-majority population.

Trump was officially endorsed during his run for president by Ghalib and Bazzi, and several other Arab and Muslim leaders and imams from Michigan, on Oct. 26 last year during a press conference in the city of Novi.

Bazzi did not respond to Arab News when asked to comment on his nomination, but in a message posted on Facebook, he wrote: “I am honored and appreciate President Donald Trump’s appointment to serve as US Ambassador to Tunisia.

“Among the distinct countries I have visited over the years, I hold a great affinity to Tunisia and its honorable parliament, elected officials, educators, and other industry leaders — along with the people I met while touring orphanages, women’s career institutions, schools, and a multitude of companies which distinguish the country’s rising presence in the region.

“With my visits overseas, the cohort’s visits to the US, and the relations we have established over the years, I am excited to return and honorably represent our Country in Tunisia as its US Ambassador. My purpose is to continue serving in capacities which make an impact, promote peace and diplomatic partnerships, which benefit our Country and enhance global relations.”

Trump wrote on social media platform X: “Bazzi is a decorated US Marine, who honorably served our Country for 21 years, collaborating with US Embassy Ambassadors, Diplomats, and Leaders throughout the world.”

Bazzi, who was born in Bint Jbeil, Lebanon, was appointed mayor of Dearborn Heights in January 2021 following the death of the incumbent and won the election for the office in November that year. He had previously served as the temporary chairperson of Dearborn Heights City Council since 2017.

Bishara Bahbah, the founder of Arab Americans for Trump, an organization that worked in several states to rally Arab and Muslim American elected officials and leaders in support of Trump’s presidential campaign, praised the appointments of Ghalib and Bazzi as “a demonstration of the president’s commitment to the Arab and Muslim community.”

He told Arab News: “Arab Americans for Peace, formerly Arab Americans for Trump, is delighted with President Trump’s nomination of two distinguished Arab American mayors from Michigan as the new ambassadors to Kuwait and Tunisia.

“Both men risked their political careers, having been elected as Democrats to their posts. Mayor Bazzi and Mayor Ghalib are outstanding individuals who wanted to see the end of the wars in both Gaza and Lebanon.”

The nominations reflect the growing influence of Arab Americans in US politics, Bahbah said, and are “a testament to the newfound power of Arab Americans in this past US presidential election and future presidential elections.

“We are confident that both mayors will be effective ambassadors representing the best interests of the United States. Their Arab backgrounds will undoubtedly help foster better US-Kuwaiti and US-Tunisian diplomatic relations.”

The nominations must now be considered and approved by a majority vote in the US Senate.

Turkiye says it will closely monitor a Syrian government deal with a Kurdish armed group

March 15, 2025

ISTANBUL: Turkiye’s foreign minister said Friday that Ankara is closely monitoring an agreement between the Syrian government and a US-backed Kurdish-led armed group, expressing concern over potential future provocations and plots that could threaten Turkiye’s security.

Hakan Fidan, speaking in an interview with the Turkish TV100 channel, said Turkiye had relayed its concerns to Syrian officials in a sudden visit to Syria on Thursday.

“If there is an agreement signed with good intentions, let it be done, but there may be some problems or mines planted for the future,” he said. “We as Turkiye are monitoring these very closely.”

The agreement to integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, into the Syrian government followed fierce clashes that erupted last week between government security forces and gunmen loyal to ousted leader Bashar Assad.

Fidan said Turkiye does not see the deal as granting autonomy to the SDF. “No one should feel like a minority but should feel like they are a special part of a greater prosperity by benefiting from equal opportunities,” he said.

The SDF is a US-backed Kurdish military alliance in northeastern Syria that has a presence in most of the territory in that part of the country.

Turkiye designates the SDF and its military arm, the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, as terrorist organizations because of their links to the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

Addressing a question on whether the YPG and SDF could be integrated into the Syrian army without laying down arms, Fidan said the issue had been discussed with the new Syrian leaders, including interim leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa. He said Turkiye’s top intelligence officials were also present and that Turkiye would remain vigilant in assessing any progress on the issue.

Fidan said Al-Sharaa assured him that the articles in the deal would call for the YPG to be fully integrated into the Syrian army.

Al-Sharaa “actually said that the current articles (are aligned with Turkish interests).” ... The agreement made will completely include the YPG in the army.”

“Essentially, what we have been saying from the very beginning is this: The new Syrian administration must take the initiative to end the YPG occupation and piracy,” Fidan said, referring to the continued presence of the group in the area.

Fidan added that Turkiye would keep a close watch on developments, stressing that “life should return to normal” for all communities in Syria, including Kurds, Arabs, Turkmens, Christians and Alawites.

Enemy refuses to hand over Ibrahimi Mosque to Awqaf Ministry for second consecutive Friday

14 Mar 2025

Palestinian Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, Muhammad Mustafa Najm, confirmed today, Friday, that the Zionist enemy authorities have refused, for the second consecutive Friday, to hand over the Ibrahimi Mosque, including its facilities, courtyards, and gates.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Awqaf, the refusal to open the eastern gate was made for the second time, which led the ministry to refuse to receive the mosque without one of its important parts, as this would constitute an acknowledgment of this violation.

The ministry had already stated its position on this matter last Friday night, and "will maintain this position until the enemy retracts its positions that violate the rights of Muslims to pray in their sanctuary, including all its courtyards, prayer areas, and corridors."

Minister Najm stated that "the Ministry of Awqaf will work to protect the Ibrahimi Mosque, preserve it, and monitor its affairs, along with the official and civil institutions of the Hebron Governorate, with the full support of the Palestinian government, where Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa follows up on the issue of the Mosque on a daily basis."

He emphasized that "there is an urgent need to work to stop the violations of this enemy, which has begun to overstep even its legal authority in dealing with the Mosque and its affairs. This places the Ibrahimi Mosque within the circle of Israeli targeting to seize it and transform it into a Talmudic synagogue.

This disregards the exclusive right of Muslims to sovereignty over it and control its affairs, both internally and externally. It is an indisputable Waqf property, and the daily violations and attacks perpetrated by this enemy will not diminish it."

He called on the international community to "assume its responsibilities and stop this enemy from its daily violations and constant attempts to seize control of the Ibrahimi Mosque."

He called on the Palestinian people in general, and in the Hebron Governorate in particular, to remain at the Mosque and visit it daily, especially on Fridays, as this presence affirms Palestinian and Islamic rights.

G7 calls for resumption of ‘unhindered’ aid for Gaza

March 15, 2025

CHARLEVOIX, Canada: The G7 on Friday called for the resumption of “unhindered” humanitarian aid for Gaza.

In a final statement from their foreign ministers in Canada, the group of powerful democracies “reaffirmed their support for the resumption of unhindered humanitarian aid into Gaza and for a permanent ceasefire.”

The White House, meanwhile, accused Hamas on Friday of making “entirely impractical” demands and stalling on a deal to release a US Israeli hostage in exchange for an extension of the Gaza ceasefire.

“Hamas is making a very bad bet that time is on its side. It is not,” a statement from the office of President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and the US National Security Council said.

“Hamas is well aware of the deadline, and should know that we will respond accordingly if that deadline passes,” it said, adding that Trump had already vowed Hamas would “pay a severe price” for not freeing hostages.

Witkoff presented a “bridge” proposal in Qatar on Wednesday to extend the first phase of the truce to mid-April if Hamas releases living hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

“Hamas was told in no uncertain terms that this ‘bridge’ would have to be implemented soon — and that dual US Israeli citizen Edan Alexander would have to be released immediately,” the statement said.

“Unfortunately, Hamas has chosen to respond by publicly claiming flexibility while privately making demands that are entirely impractical without a permanent ceasefire,” it added.

White House says Hamas making ‘very bad bet’ in Gaza talks

March 14, 2025

WASHINGTON: The White House accused Hamas on Friday of making “entirely impractical” demands and stalling on a deal to release a US-Israeli hostage in exchange for an extension of the Gaza ceasefire.

Hamas said earlier on Friday it was ready to free an Israeli-American hostage and the remains of four others, after the Palestinian militants and Israel resumed indirect Gaza ceasefire negotiations.

Witkoff presented a “bridge” proposal in Qatar on Wednesday to extend the first phase of the truce to mid-April if Hamas releases living hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

“Hamas was told in no uncertain terms that this ‘bridge’ would have to be implemented soon — and that dual US-Israeli citizen Edan Alexander would have to be released immediately,” the statement said.

“Unfortunately, Hamas has chosen to respond by publicly claiming flexibility while privately making demands that are entirely impractical without a permanent ceasefire,” it added.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asked if the United States was prioritizing the release of the American hostage, said: “We care about all the hostages.”

“We’re acting like this is a normal exchange, this is a normal thing that happens. This is an outrage. So they should all be released,” Rubio told reporters after Group of Seven talks in Canada.

“I’m not going to comment on what we’re going to accept and not accept, other than that all of us — the whole world — should continue to say that what Hamas has done is outrageous, it’s ridiculous, it’s sick, it’s disgusting,” he said.

Police probing Belfast stabbing believe it may have been Islamist terror attack

14 MAR 2025

PSNI detectives investigating a stabbing incident believe the attack may have been an Islamist terror attack.

Specialist officers are probing the attack, which happened on the evening of March 1, and are understood to working towards the possibility the stabbing was motivated by Islamic terrorism, it was a hate crime or it was a mental health episode.

Belfast Live understands the man attacked was a 51-year-old Northern Ireland born male and that he suffered a single stab wound in the incident. The victim has since been released from hospital and is said to be recovering.

Local officers responded to the attack as well as the Armed Response Unit and the suspect, an 18-year-old, was arrested shortly after the attack. A knife, believed to be a kitchen knife, was also recovered.

It is believed that if the attack has been driven by religious ideology it will be the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. The PSNI are liaising with the UK intelligence services as well as counter-terrorism police in Britain as part of their continuing investigation.

The attack happened close to the junction the Ormeau Road and University Avenue. At this stage it is understood local police believe the man acted alone in the attack. It is also understood local police are working closely with immigrant communities in the city amid concerns the incident could lead to heightened tensions.

In a statement issued on Friday, the PSNI said that detectives from the Serious Crime Branch “continue to investigate the circumstances of a stabbing which took place close to the Ormeau Road area of Belfast around 7.35pm on Saturday, 1 March”.

Assistant Chief Constable Davy Beck said: “An 18 year old man, was arrested following a stabbing which took place close to the Ormeau Road area of Belfast, on Saturday 1 March. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, before being detained for the purpose of assessment by mental health professionals. He remains in their care at this time.

“The victim, a 51 year old man, received treatment in hospital and has since been discharged. He continues to receive support from specialist officers. While I would stress that the motive for the attack has not yet been established, detectives are exploring a number of potential motivating factors, including the possibility that this was a hate crime, a mental health episode or driven by religious ideology.

“At this time, no other persons are being sought in connection with the attack. I urge anyone who was in the area at the time or may have information to contact us on 101. A report can also be made using the online reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport.

“Alternatively, information can be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.”

Unity call to end hate attacks on Muslim Australians

March 15 2025

Childcare worker Ealaf Al-Easawi had been grocery shopping on her lunch break when a woman allegedly came up to her, slapped her across the face and shoved her to the ground in an unprovoked attack.

Ms Al-Easawi, who was wearing a hijab, had never seen her alleged attacker before.

"I was shaking. I could barely talk and breathe," she said.

The same woman had allegedly attacked another Muslim woman 10 minutes earlier in an alleged Islamophobic incident at a Melbourne shopping centre in February.

"I've faced lots of racism and disrespect in shopping centres when I buy something or wait in line, but I don't report and just ignore it," Ms Al-Easawi said.

"But when it comes to getting physically assaulted, I can't keep quiet. I have to stand up for myself."

It left the 26-year-old traumatised and too scared to leave her home.

These alleged incidents of racial hatred are being highlighted on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on Saturday, which coincides with the anniversary of the Christchurch mosque shootings where 51 Muslims were murdered in New Zealand by an Australian man.

Six years later and the fear, pain and trauma still reverberate among Australia's Muslim community, including the president of the Australian National Imams Council Shadi Alsuleiman.

"Families, communities and individuals who have always called this country home now face heightened suspicion, prejudice and hate," Imam Alsuleiman said.

He noted instances of massacre threats against mosques, bomb threats against Islamic schools and women targeted because of their hijabs and faith in the past month alone.

"This is not just a series of isolated incidents, it is a systemic issue that has been impacting our community for over two decades," he said.

Physical and verbal abuse of Muslims more than doubled in the past two years, including a 150 per cent spike in in-person incidents, according to an Islamophobia Register Australia study.

Islamophobia soared to unprecedented levels in Australia following the October 7 attack by Hamas on an Israeli music festival in 2023 that killed about 1200 Israelis with 250 taken hostage.

Israel's retaliatory assault on Gaza has killed more than 50,000 Palestinians, according to the United Nations.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the nation stands firm against any expression or act of hatred or hostility towards the Muslim community.

"We will not tolerate Islamophobia in any form," he said.

"It goes against all we are as a nation and all that we have built together over generations."

The issue has devastating impacts on victims and undermines social cohesion, said the federal government's special envoy to combat Islamophobia, Aftab Malik.

"Islamophobia breeds fear, mistrust and division, and undermines the principles of fairness and inclusivity foundational to our democracy," he said in a statement endorsed by 30 Islamic groups.

Mr Aftab said Islamophobia impacts all Australians, calling on political leaders and the media to stop sowing division and take attacks seriously.

Victorian Multicultural Affairs Minister Ingrid Stitt said the government was developing a guide with Muslim communities to build awareness and highlight support for Islamophobia victims amid an alarming rise in incidents against Muslims.

The NSW Faith Affairs Council condemned Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and all acts of hate directed at any groups, calling for people of all faiths and none to respect the diversity of beliefs.

"Each of us has a responsibility to build trust within our multicultural and multi-faith communities," it said.

Asylum seekers housed 'unlawfully' at air base

15 March 2025

A High Court judge has found former Home Secretary Suella Braverman acted unlawfully in accommodating three asylum seekers at a former RAF base.

The men - who were at MDP Wethersfield in Essex between July 2023 and February 2024 - argued they were living in "prison-like" conditions.

Mr Justice Timothy Mould said the government failed to take into account the three claimants' experiences of torture, mental health conditions and disabilities.

The government said it was pleased the court found in favour of the Home Office on the "majority of grounds" and pointed out it "inherited" the legal challenge from the Conservative administration.

Mr Justice Mould ruled that Braverman was in breach of her duties under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

The government failed to assess the "equalities implications" of housing them at Wethersfield, he said.

"That is a most serious and inexplicable omission," he said.

"It amounts to the clearest failure on the part of the defendant to fulfil the public sector equality duty."

The first claimant, referred to at the High Court as TG, was a victim of trafficking and serious physical violence, had a disability and had post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

The other two - named MN and HAA - were also victims of torture and trafficking.

HAA struggled staying in shared rooms at a large occupancy site and was a "potentially vulnerable individual".

A claim made by a fourth asylum seeker, who was also an ex-resident at MDP Wethersfield, was dismissed by the judge.

The then-Conservative government announced plans to house migrants at Wethersfield near Braintree, as well as RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, in March 2023.

Migrants were moved into Wethersfield in July 2023 and there were initial plans to accommodate 1,700 people there.

Lawyers acting for the claimants said their clients "each suffered a serious decline in their mental health".

In a statement to media, they said: "[The breaches] illustrate that the home secretary is not only required to have a system capable of operating lawfully, she must act lawfully in each individual case."

Emily Soothill, from law firm Deighton Pierce Glynn, said victims of torture and trafficking should not be housed at Wethersfield.

"We urge [current Home Secretary] Yvette Cooper to reflect on this judgment, end the use of large sites and close Wethersfield once and for all," said Ms Soothill.

Maddie Harris of Humans For Rights Network said: "Placing people in camp accommodation on ex-military sites is an inhumane way to treat those seeking protection."

A Home Office spokesperson said: "We remain of the belief that the Wethersfield site provides fully adequate and functional accommodation for those asylum seekers who we have a legal obligation to support."

The government department said Cooper would make a decision about the future use of the air base in "due course".

Accommodation was offered to asylum seekers on a "no-choice" basis and no-one would placed there if their needs could not be met, the spokesperson added.

The BBC contacted Braverman's office for comment.

School’s guide to respecting religious beliefs in RSE

14 March 2025

Christian Concern’s Head of Education Steve Beegoo, and the Christian Legal Centre’s Roger Kiska, lay out how Christian schools and teachers can best follow government guidelines relating to RSE and still respect religious beliefs.

Since it became compulsory in September 2020, many schools have been implementing and teaching Relationships and Sex Education but have discovered significant disquiet from those with a traditional religious background. This is due to the strongly held religious beliefs about sex, marriage and gender which are common to many religious communities. In order for a school to comply with the Equality Act 2010 and the government guidance, significant attention will need to be paid to the views of religious parents, so that schools properly address the issues arising and do not unlawfully disresgard those with religious belief. Sadly, some schools are being taken through legal processes and this has resulted from their lack of understanding of the law, the government guidance and the strongly held views of many parents. This has also arisen because schools have relied heavily on the resources provided by external organisations, or where an activist staff member with strong views has inconsiderately implemented the RSE curriculum, especially where LGBT themes predominate. This guide is to help schools make sure they have done all they can to fully engage with religious views, and remain compliant with the law.

The key areas

The below list sets out certain issues that parents and/or teachers may have with the teaching of RSE:

Parents are raising objections as to inappropriate teaching of sexual themes to children, saying that they are not appropriate for their age. Religious communities often do not speak openly or publicly about sexual parts or relationships until much later in childhood than some schools are beginning to do.

Parents are raising objections when diversity or Pride celebrations are required to be celebrated through the school activities. Parents believe such requirements do not simply encourage students to treat others with kindness and respect, but that they indoctrinate children with ideas that contradict widely-held, historic, religious beliefs about marriage, sex and gender.

Parents are concerned about the teaching of LGBT relationships, believing these relationships are being celebrated and promoted, rather than being informed about them, which is in contradiction to the teachings of their religious faith.

Parents are concerned that sexual themes, and discussions of intimate relationships, are being integrated across the curriculum, especially in RSE or PSHE, and so their legal right to withdraw their children from ‘Sex Education’ is being undermined.

Parents are concerned that resources are being provided to schools by external organisations, where considerations of traditional religious beliefs about sex, marriage and gender are neither referenced nor considered, and are, on occasions actively being undermined. Some resources present a negative view of religious groups, or that religious groups accept the beliefs of the appropriateness of same sex sexual relationships, or the ideas of gender identity.

Parents are in fear of raising concerns due to the potential for their children being targeted and bullied because of their religious beliefs where they may believe they are a minority.

Teachers are concerned they are being asked to promote and celebrate gender identity ideology or sexual relationship practices that are against the religious convictions of many parents or the teachers themselves.

Teachers are concerned that they are being asked to engage in ‘positive affirmation’ of children’s gender dysphoria, through the use of changed pronouns, which is in contravention of their deeply held rational and religious convictions about the nature of gender, and the vulnerability of children to the long-term harm of socially transitioning children through the school environment.

Teachers are concerned about raising these issues to their employer for fear of discrimination due to their religious beliefs, which are protected.

Legal parameters

The below list lays out the exact legal parameters for schools and parents:

The Equality Act 2010, states that religion is a protected characteristic, alongside sex, gender reassignment and sexuality. Discrimination against those with religious perspectives is unlawful. While the content of the curriculum is explicitly excluded from the provisions of the Equality Act, the way in which it is delivered must not result in unlawful discrimination against those with religious belief. (See ‘The Equality Act and Schools’)

The judgment in the case of Kristie Higgs, like several decisions before it, has produced case-law that deeply held Christian beliefs about social issues that affect children’s education, like opposition to same-sex marriage or gender identity belief, are legally protected.

The Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education, and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019 maintain the right to withdraw a child from ‘Sex Education’. There is no right to withdraw a child from Relationships Education, whether at the primary or secondary level.

The Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education, and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019 require substantial and meaningful engagement with parents about the content and policy, so that parents with religious beliefs can be involved in a full dialogue about the teaching their children will receive.

Article 2 Protocol 1 of the United Nations Convention on Human Rights, to which the UK is a signatory, states that in the exercise of any functions which it assumes in relation to education and to teaching, the State shall respect the right of parents to ensure such education and teaching, is in conformity with their own religious and philosophical convictions. For any school to do otherwise is therefore unlawful.

All maintained schools have a statutory duty to promote community cohesion. The Education and Inspections Act 2006 inserted a new section 21(5) to the Education Act 2002 introducing a duty on the governing bodies of maintained schools to promote community cohesion. This duty is also set out in funding agreements between academies and free schools and the DfE. Schools which ignore the religious beliefs within their community will unlawfully be disregarding this duty.

All maintained schools are under a public sector equality duty under the Equality Act 2010, which requires them to have due regard to preventing unlawful discrimination and harassment of those with religious beliefs, and others with protected characteristics, promoting good relations among those with different protected characteristics in the formation of any policies.

Employment law is also clear that those working in schools should not be discriminated against on the grounds of their religious beliefs. This would include the introduction of policies which have the unintended consequence of causing those with seriously held religious beliefs to suffer a detriment when compared to staff who do not share those beliefs.

The former Education Secretary, Gillian Keagan, previously wrote a letter to schools making it clear that they must show Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) resources to parents. It states that schools or organisations which refuse this on ‘copyright’ grounds are wrong to do so.

The (draft) guidance released on ‘Gender Questioning Children’, published by the previous government in 2024, is clear that schools should not proactively initiate action towards a child’s social transition or imply that contested views around gender identity are fact. This guidance is clear that there is protection for teachers that they should not be compelled to use a pupil’s preferred pronouns.

The (draft) Relationships and Sex Education Guidance, also released by the previous government, includes clear age limits for the teaching of the most sensitive content and specifies that the contested topic of gender identity should not be taught as fact.

It is only Relationships Education which is compulsory in primary schools, and teaching on LGBT themes is not a requirement.

Schools must align with Keeping Children Safe in Education (Statutory Guidance for schools and colleagues, September 2024). It states that, when supporting a gender questioning child, schools should take a cautious approach and consider the broad range of their individual needs, in partnership with the child’s parents. This is especially relevant should those parents hold religious beliefs about gender.

The Human Rights Act 1998 requires schools to take into account the religious beliefs of their employees who may have conscientious objections to teaching LGBT themed material. They are required to balance the rights of their employees against their desire to pursue any employment requirements that may clash with the beliefs of employees.

Recent case law brings into serious question whether children under the age of 14 can legally fall within the definition of transgender, and therefore whether a child’s transgender identity is protected under law. Puberty blockers are the first recognised stage towards gender reassignment, and children under 14 do not meet the legal definition of gender reassignment under the Equality Act 2010.

Any form of teaching which fails to be critical and objective or which promotes partisan political views is forbidden. This could include certain campaigning elements of LGBT teaching.(1)

Greenland's politicians unite against Trump

15 March 2025

Greenland's leading political parties have issued a joint statement to condemn Donald Trump's "unacceptable behaviour", after the US president seemed to escalate his campaign to take over the island.

The show of unity saw all leaders of parties in the Inatsisartut - the parliament - release a joint message saying they "cannot accept the repeated statements about annexation and control of Greenland".

It follows a meeting between Trump and Nato's secretary general Mark Rutte on Thursday, where the president seemed to double down on his annexation plan.

Greenland's joint statement was orchestrated by outgoing Prime Minister Mute B Egede, whose party was defeated in an election on Tuesday.

"Our country will never be the USA and we Greenlanders will never be Americans," Egede wrote on Facebook. "Don't keep treating us with disrespect. Enough is enough."

Greenland - the world's biggest island, between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans - has been controlled by Denmark, nearly 3,000km (1,860 miles) away, for about 300 years.

Greenland governs its own domestic affairs, but decisions on foreign and defence policy are made in Copenhagen.

The US has long had a security interest in the island. It has had a military base there since World War Two, and Trump is probably also keen on the rare earth minerals that could be mined.

Greenland was already on the defensive about Trump's annexing talk, but his comments to Rutte at the White House sent further shockwaves when he implied that Nato's help might be needed to seize the island.

"You know, Mark, we need that for international security... we have a lot of our favourite players cruising around the coast, and we have to be careful," Trump said.

"We'll be talking to you," he added.

When asked about the prospect of annexation, Trump said: "I think that will happen."

Rutte has been criticised in both Greenland and Denmark for not reprimanding Trump. Instead, he said he would "leave that [issue] outside... I do not want to drag Nato into that".

He then pivoted to praise - something several world leaders have used when dealing with Donald Trump - saying he was "totally right" that security in the Arctic must be maintained.

The joint statement from Greenland's politicians emphasised that they are united in their pushback against Trump's plan.

"Greenland continues the work for Greenland," the statement said.

"We all stand behind this effort and strongly distance ourselves from attempts to create discord."

Their decision to speak out came three days after elections in which the centre-right opposition - the Democratic Party - won a surprise victory.

Its leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who is likely to be Greenland's new prime minister, is now negotiating with other parties to form a coalition.

Those Fighting State Unwilling To Negotiate: Balochistan CM

By Web Desk

March 14, 2025

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti on Friday said that those waging war against the state were unwilling to come to the negotiating table.

His remarks came days after the deadly attack on the Jaffar Express that resulted in the martyrdom of 26 train passengers, including 18 security personnel from the army and the FC. 33 terrorists were also killed by the security forces during the clearance operation in Balochistan's Bolan district.

Speaking on Geo News' programme "Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada Ke Saath”, CM Bugti said: “If Akhtar Mengal or Abdul Malik Baloch have a solution to the issue, let them present it — we are ready.”

He said that Dr Abdul Malik Baloch, in his tenure, initiated dialogue with the dissident Baloch leaders. He said that the former CM did not take him as home minister and the provincial assembly into confidence.

The chief minister was of the view that talks could be held with the political parties registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The CM asked: “On what should we negotiate with terrorists?”

Referring to their alleged involvement in subversive activities in the country, CM Bugti said that the entire country was referring to the disillusioned Baloch leaders as terrorists.

Lambasting the PTI for relocating thousands of militants to the country following the fall of Kabul in 2021, he said: “Allowing the banned outfit to return is also a reason for the rise in terrorism.”

It was one of the major reasons behind recent spike in terrorism in the country, he added.

He said that PPP always supported the reconciliation process to resolve the challenges being faced by Balochistan.

The chief minister reiterated that the Afghan soil was being used for terror attacks inside Pakistan.

Earlier in the day, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry termed India main sponsor of terrorism in Balochistan, saying the latest attack on Jaffar Express is the continuation of the same policy.

Addressing a media briefing flanked by Balochistan CM Bugti, the DG ISPR said: “The latest attack in Balochistan and other terrorist incidents that took place in the past…we understand that the main sponsor of these [attacks] is your eastern neighbor.”

The outlawed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), during Tuesday's attack on the Jaffar Express, blew up train tracks and held over 440 passengers hostage in a day-long standoff with security services in a remote mountain pass in Bolan district.

The military, after clearing the train and rescuing hostages, said it killed 33 attackers. Before the operation began, terrorists had martyred 26 passengers, while four security personnel were martyred during the operation.

In today's presser, Lt Gen Chaudhry confirmed that three FC soldiers embraced martyrdom when the terrorists attacked Frontier Corps picket before the train was ambushed.

Giving a breakdown of the casualties in the incident, the DG ISPR revealed that 26 martyred train passengers included 18 security personnel from the army and the FC, three officials from Pakistan Railways and other departments and five civilians.

He further said that the death toll from the terror attack could rise further as 37 out of the 354 passengers were injured.

The military spokesperson said that they had five operation casualties.

The DG ISPR said that the terrorists stopped the Jaffar Express via an IED blast in a hilly terrain area where accessibility is difficult.

Meanwhile, media warfare led by Indian media began in support of the terrorists, said the DG ISPR.

Lt Gen Chaudhry said the incident of Jaffar Express is a continuity of India's policy to sponsor terrorism in Pakistan.

“The incident of Jaffar Express is continuity of the same policy, the same sponsorship from where is it was engineered and from it was being pushed..,” he remarked.

Slamming the Indian media, the DG ISPR said that fake videos were created by using artificial intelligence (AI) to spread malicious propaganda regarding the Jaffar Express attack on social media platforms.

“Indian media spread propaganda by using the fake videos to exaggerate the situation,” he said.

“India media tried to create a narrative [against Pakistan] by airing fake videos,” he said, adding that the Indian media also played terrorists’ old videos taken from social media.

“A [terrorists] activity was underway in [Balochistan] and the other activity was being run by Indian media,” the military spokesperson said.

Military vows to crush Balochistan terrorists, abettors

Baqir Sajjad Syed

March 15, 2025

• ISPR director general, Balochistan chief minister point to India as ‘main sponsor of terror’

• 23 security personnel among 31 casualties; officials fear toll from Jaffar Express tragedy may rise

• Bugti says no grievances justify such a heinous act; sees TTP and BLA as two sides of same coin

ISLAMABAD: The military on Friday vowed to take decisive action against terrorists operating in Balochistan — along with their abettors and facilitators, both inside and outside the country — following the hijacking of the Jaffar Express.

In a press conference alongside Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry declared, “We will take them on, their facilitators, and abettors whether inside Pakistan or outside”.

“They will be dealt with sternly and in the way those killing innocent people deserve to be treated,” Lt Gen Sharif said, explaining a statement he made the other day when he posited that the “rules of engagement” have changed after this latest attack.

The press briefing came after Pakistani special forces successfully cleared the hijacked train. The operation, which lasted over 36 hours, resulted in the rescue of 354 passengers. However, 26 hostages lost their lives, including 18 military and Frontier Corps personnel, three railway employees, and five civilians.

Additionally, five security personnel were martyred. The casualty count could rise, as 37 of the rescued hostages sustained injuries and are being treated at hospitals.

Lt Gen Sharif dismissed claims of an intelligence failure, stating that security agencies consistently work to thwart thousands of threats, but cannot publicly disclose their successes. He emphasised that intelligence gathered before the attack played a crucial role in the operation’s success.

There was a general threat alert for the Sibi area before the attack, but it was not specific. However, the available intelligence helped in the successful execution of the counterterrorism operation.

Rescue operation

The hostages were released in three phases: first, a group of Baloch locals was freed by the terrorists after ethnic profiling, in what the director general of ISPR termed a “deceptive perception manoeuvre”.

The second group escaped when Frontier Corps snipers created an opportunity for them to flee, although a couple of passengers lost their lives when terrorists fired at them.

The third and final group was rescued during the clearance operation by the Special Services Group (SSG), which successfully neutralised the remaining terrorists aboard the train. No hostages were killed during the final assault, he said.

A total of 33 terrorists were eliminated in the operation, though some managed to escape before the clearance phase began. Security forces have launched a sanitisation operation in the area to track down any remaining militants.

Links to Afghanistan, India

Lt Gen Sharif linked the attack to Afghanistan, stating that the hijackers were in constant communication with their handlers across the border. While the operation was underway, Indian media ran an information warfare campaign aimed at glorifying the terrorists, he claimed.

“We must understand that in this terrorist incident in Balochistan, and others before, the main sponsor is your eastern neighbour,” he said.

He recalled Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts since 2014, highlighting the formation of the National Action Plan (NAP) as a crucial step in combating terrorism.

“All political parties and stakeholders sat together and developed this consensus, which became the foundation of the National Action Plan. The previous government further reviewed and revised it, resulting in a renewed commitment to counter-terrorism,” he stated.

The revised NAP includes 14 critical points addressing the root causes and mechanisms of terrorism most of which have now been included in the Azm-i-Istehkam vision that is being currently followed. “If we focus on implementing these 14 points in letter and spirit, I believe terrorism can be eradicated,” he said.

The ISPR chief detailed the ongoing counterterrorism operations, revealing that in 2024 alone, security forces conducted 59,775 intelligence-based operations both major and minor.

So far in 2025, 11,654 IBOs have been carried out. He noted that 1,250 terrorists were killed during 2024 and 2025, while 563 security personnel were martyred.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti characterised the hijacking as a clear act of terrorism, dismissing any notions that it stemmed from economic grievances or political issues. “This was purely an act of terrorism carried out by evil forces that not only want to destabilise Pakistan, but also want to break it,” he stated.

CM Bugti accused India’s intelligence agency, RAW, of orchestrating anti-Pakistan activities through Afghanistan.

He claimed that while the banned TTP and BLA follow different ideologies, their handlers — a reference to India that funds and trains them to carry out attacks against Pakistan — keep them together.

South Waziristan mosque blast injures JUI-F leader, three others

By Web Desk

March 14, 2025

PESHAWAR: A blast tore through a mosque in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's South Waziristan district on Friday, leaving at least four worshippers injured including district chief of Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), police said.

Abdullah Nadeem, leader of the JUI-F, was believed to be the target of the blast. The politician has been hospitalised with serious injuries, said a district police chief, DPO Asif Bahadur.

The police officer added that two children were among those injured in the blast. The culprit behind the explosion was not immediately clear.

Attacks have been escalating in Pakistan's border regions with Afghanistan in recent months.

Last month, a suicide bomber killed six worshippers Maulana Hamidul Haq Haqqani — son of Maulana Samiul Haq and chief of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-S) during Friday prayer at the Darul Uloom Haqqani in Nowshera district.

This week in Balochistan, militants hijacked a train and held passengers hostage in a day-long standoff with security forces, leaving at least 26 hostages and four security personnel dead.

Similar attacks have increased in Pakistan since the Taliban authorities returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

Islamabad has time again urged Kabul to not allow its territory to be used by terrorist groups to carry out attacks against Pakistan — vehemently denied by the Afghan Taliban-led administration.

The two nations share a porous border spanning around 2,500 kilometres with several crossing points which hold significance as a key element of regional trade and relations between the people across both sides of the fence.

The diplomatic effort is coupled with ongoing kinetic action against terrorists by security forces who continue to engage in operations, eliminating a number of militants and thwarting multiple infiltration attempts.

However, the issue of terrorism remains a key issue for Pakistan which has urged Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used by groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to carry out attacks inside the former's territory.

Terrorists, their social media backers cut from same cloth, says Talal

Iftikhar A. Khan

March 15, 2025

• State minister for interior rebuffs impression of insurgency in Balochistan, calls for holistic review of NAP

• Zartaj Gul censures defence minister for making political speech in wake of Jaffar Express tragedy

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry on Friday said that those who “facilitated” the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) through social media propaganda will be treated as terrorists.

Speaking in the National Assembly two days after militants from the outlawed BLA attacked a train in Balochistan and held passengers hostage for over 24 hours, he said that on one side, the banned outfit had attacked Jaffar Express and on the other hand, “social media was being used to attack Pakistan’s security forces”.

“This was facilitation [of terrorists] as these forces were protecting innocent civilians, including women, children, and government employees,” the minister said.

He warned that those facilitating terrorists through social media would be treated no differently than terrorists themselves.

Mr Chaudhry said there was no difference between the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the proscribed BLA.

While referring to the use of Afghan soil for launching attacks in Pakistan, he alleged the handlers and training camps of both groups were in a neighbouring country and they also received funding from there.

The only difference was that members of one of these outfits “sport a beard” while the others were without beards.

However, both groups had the same pattern of attacks and “same objective of scaring and dividing the people”.

The minister rebuffed the impression of an insurgency in Balochistan and said the attacks like the one on Jaffar Express were acts of terrorism.

Mr Chaudhary commended the security forces for eliminating the attackers.

He recalled that at least six terrorist attacks on average were taking place in the country when the PML-N came to power in 2013.

“[But] peace was established under the leadership of [former prime minister] Nawaz Sharif, who took all [parties] on board”.

The minister attributed the resurgence of terrorism to policy failures after 2018 when the PTI government, led by Imran Khan, came into power.

Terrorists who were brought back by PTI for resettlement for political gains are now killing people, the minister claimed, as he urged all political stakeholders to engage in serious dialogue on issues of national security.

“This is a matter of national security. Let’s sit down and talk—whether about the National Action Plan or any other strategy. But speeches alone won’t solve anything,” Mr Chaudhry said.

He stressed the urgent need for full implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) devised after the attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School in 2014.

Provinces’ responsibility

The minister criticised the PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for failing to build institutional capacity to fight terrorism.

“It has been 20 years and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has received over Rs600 billion in the National Finance Commission Award. Yet, their Counter-Terrorism Department operates from rented buildings and lacks proper resources,” the minister claimed about the province where his political rival has been in power since 2013.

Mr Chaudhry said that intelligence agencies provide timely information, but implementation at the provincial level was missing.

“In Punjab, intelligence leads are acted upon, and results are visible,” the minister claimed about the province where his own party is in power.

“But in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, either there’s no capacity or no will to act,” the minister claimed, without giving any proof of lapse by the KP administration.

Calling for accountability, he challenged PTI leaders to present their 13-year performance in KP.

Mr Chaudhry, who was appointed as the junior minister for interior last week, said he was ready to present a report on the one-year performance of his ministry.

Focus on PTI

PTI leader Zartaj Gul, in her speech, censured Defence Minister Khawaja Asif for criticising PTI on the floor of the house even at a time of national tragedy.

Mr Asif, she claimed, had “no right to hold the ministerial portfolio” as he “lost to [PTI’s] Rehana Dar” during the 2024 general elections.

According to the official results announced by ECP, Mr Asif defeated Ms Dar with a margin of over 18,000 votes.

Ms Wazir also slammed the federal government over its “poor performance despite a jumbo cabinet”.

Usman Badini of JUI-F said the grievances of the people of Balochistan should be addressed and called for “practical steps” to solve the issues faced by the province.

Sheikh Aftab Ahmad of PML-N said all political parties should sit together to find solutions to challenges faced by Pakistan, especially terrorism.

Sehar Kamran of PPP also commended security forces for successfully completing the operation against the terrorists who had attacked Jaffar Express.

Despite IHC order, jail authorities fail to produce Imran Khan

By Web Desk

March 14, 2025

ISLAMABAD: Jail authorities on Friday failed to comply with the Islamabad High Court's (IHC) directive for producing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

During the Mashal Yousafzai's case, the court directed the superintendent of Adiala jail to go and meet the PTI founder and confirm whether Yousafzai was his legal representative.

Initially during today's hearing, the court remarked that if the Islamabad advocate general (AG) intends to proceed with the video link appearance, they must inform it. However, if the PTI founder is not presented via video link by 2pm, he must be brought before the court in person at 3pm.

After the 2pm deadline expired, the former prime minister was due to be presented in court in person, as per the court orders.

However, the Islamabad advocate general (AG) informed the court that bringing the PTI founder from jail was not possible due to security concerns and that presenting him via video link was also not feasible.

The court directed the Adiala jail superintendent and Islamabad IG to submit their affidavits in this regard.

The court also formed a commission to send law clerk Sakina Bangash to visit Adiala Jail and confirm from the PTI founder whether Yousafzai was his lawyer or not. The commission that includes the law clerk has been directed to meet Khan tomorrow (Saturday), and the jail superintendent has been instructed to make arrangements for the meeting.

At this, Yousafzai said that formation of the commission was a golden opportunity for them. She also requested that the commission ask whether the PTI founder is being allowed to meet his friends.

The Islamabad AG then said that the court order was related to meetings with lawyers, not friends.

Justice Sardar Ejaz Khan remarked that Yousafzai was appearing before the court as a lawyer, and the court was hearing the petition accordingly.

Earlier, the court remarked that failing to comply with a prior court order, which was issued with the consent of all parties, amounts to contempt of court. In the previous hearing, the court had ordered that the petitioner be allowed to meet the PTI founder.

Expressing disappointment, the judge said that the jail authorities were expected to follow the court’s directive. "Prima facie, the court is convinced that the jail authorities have committed contempt," it remarked.

The court also noted that a list was submitted, purportedly provided by the PTI founder. However, if the court is not satisfied with its authenticity, it will directly verify it from him.

Expressing frustration with the jail authorities, the court rebuked the jail superintendent, saying that they had turned the matter into a mockery.

During the hearing, Advocate Shoaib Shaheen informed the court that the political leadership had been unable to meet for the past five months. Justice Sardar questioned the Adiala Jail superintendent, asking whether he had been informed why he was summoned.

Superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum responded that he had been out of the city. Justice Sardar further inquired why a meeting was not arranged the previous Friday. The jail official said that the PTI founder had not wished to meet anyone on that day.

The judge also raised concerns over the previous court order, questioning why Yousafzai was made to wait in the superintendent’s office instead of facilitating the meeting.

The jail superintendent replied that the PTI founder and his wife, Bushra Bibi, had said that Yousafzai was neither their lawyer nor their focal person.

The court then asked Yousafzai about the cases in which she is PTI founder’s lawyer.

“How many cases do you have in the Peshawar High Court? and what is your standing as a lawyer?" he asked.

Meanwhile, a list of six lawyers appointed by the PTI founder was presented in court, bearing his signature. The jail superintendent informed the court that the PTI founder and Bushra Bibi are allowed to meet every Tuesday.

The court then adjourned the hearing until Wednesday (March 19).

IHC orders probe into denial of lawyer’s access to Imran

Malik Asad

March 15, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Friday appointed court clerk Sakina Bangash to investigate the denial of a meeting between former prime minister Imran Khan and lawyer Mashal Yousafzai.

Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan made the appointment while hearing a petition seeking contempt of court proceedings against jail authorities for denying Ms Yousafzai access to Imran Khan. However, the jail authorities informed the court that the incarcerated PTI founder had not consented to the meeting when her name was sent to him.

The judge directed the Adiala Jail authorities to facilitate the court clerk’s visit to ascertain the facts.

Mashal Yousafzai, who appeared in court alongside her lawyer Shoaib Shaheen, argued that multiple petitions had been filed on the matter but were assigned to a different court.

The state counsel presented a handwritten list of lawyers allegedly provided by the PTI founder, indicating his refusal to meet certain individuals. However, the court questioned the validity of this claim, noting that jail authorities had previously assured the court that the meeting would take place.

Justice Khan expressed dissatisfaction with the jail authorities’ conduct, noting that the petitioner had been denied access despite clear court directives.

The court directed that Imran Khan be presented via video link at 2pm or in person at 3pm, warning that failure to comply would prompt action by the Islamabad police chief.

The court also addressed concerns regarding whether Mashal Yousafzai was indeed Imran Khan’s legal representative, suggesting that the PTI founder provide a written statement confirming or denying her status as his lawyer.

Justice Khan emphasised that the jail authorities’ repeated non-compliance amounted to contempt of court.

When the hearing resumed, Jail Superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum appeared before the court and was questioned about the delay in arranging meetings. He stated that he had been out of town and that Imran Khan had refused to meet Ms Yousafzai.

However, Justice Khan highlighted inconsistencies in the authorities’ responses and reaffirmed the court’s commitment to ensuring justice.

Advocate General for Islamabad Ayaz Shaukat later appeared and informed the court that Imran Khan could not be presented via video link due to security concerns.

Justice Khan directed the jail authorities and Islamabad IG to submit affidavits detailing their compliance with the court orders.

Sakina Bangash is required to visit Adiala Jail, meet the PTI founder and confirm whether Ms Yousafzai is his legal representative. She was also instructed to inquire whether the PTI founder’s meetings with his associates are being arranged as per legal provisions.

List of lawyers

During the proceedings, a list of six lawyers signed by the PTI founder was presented before the court, raising further questions about whether the power of attorney was lawfully signed.

The jail superintendent informed the court that a meeting between Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and their legal team was scheduled for Tuesday.

Expressing concerns about the fairness of the process, Mashal Yousafzai questioned whether justice would be served.

In response, Justice Khan reassured her, stating: “The court is here to ensure justice. That is why we are taking these steps to verify the facts and uphold the rule of law.”

The proceedings were adjourned until March 21 with directives for the court clerk to complete the inquiry and present its findings in the next hearing.

Jail trial

The Lahore High Court on Friday allowed more time to the Election Commission of Pakistan to file a reply to a petition of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan challenging his jail trial in a contempt case by the ECP.

When a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum resumed hearing on the petition, the ECP counsel explained the reason for delay in submission of the reply, saying that certain documents needed to be included in the case record.

He sought more time to furnish the reply.

The bench expressed displeasure over the non-submission of reply by the ECP, but allowed the request and adjourned the hearing.

Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry and Justice Asjad Javaid Ghural were other members of the bench.

The petition filed by Imran Khan contended that the ECP had on Nov 30, 2023 passed the impugned order to conduct the trial at Adiala Jail on account of unspecified security concerns. It said the ECP failed to appreciate that a jail trial would violate several fundamental rights of the petitioner, adding that the commission incorrectly held that it can order a trial in secret and in jail.

The petition argued that a jail trial was a violation of Article 10-A of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to fair trial and due process of law. The petitioner asked the court to set aside the ECP decision and direct it to hold an open and public trial with full access to his legal team, media and the public.

LHC asks govt to explain its use of X despite ban

Wajih Ahmad Sheikh

March 15, 2025

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday sought a detailed report from the interior ministry and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on the petitions challenging the ban on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), with a directive to explain which government institutions are still using the banned app.

Hearing the petitions, a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum, also summoned a responsible official from the PTA along with relevant records at the next hearing.

The bench directed the respondents to provide details about legal status of the use of X in Pakistan along with clarification which government institutions were still using the social media app despite the ban.

Justice Ali Zia Bajwa, a member of the bench, questioned who was responsible if X was still accessible despite being blocked in the country.

The counsel for the PTA informed the bench that users access X via Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The bench summoned a report explaining how X continued to be used despite the ban and fixed the next hearing for March 20.

Article 19 violation

Earlier, the petitions informed the court that the government had imposed restrictions on social media and blocked access to platform X, arguing that access to information was a fundamental right of every citizen and that such restrictions violate articles 19 and 19-A of the Constitution.

The petitions asked the court to lift all restrictions on social media and declare all government notifications regarding such bans as null and void.

CAIR Welcomes Expanded Religious Accommodations for Incarcerated Muslims at Montgomery County Correctional Facility

March 14, 2025

Today, the Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) welcomed the successful expansion of religious accommodations for incarcerated Muslims at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF). Following recent constructive meetings with Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DOCR) administrators and wardens, the updated policies reflect a commitment to respecting and upholding the religious rights of Muslim inmates.

Accommodations include the following:

Religious Attire: The facility has implemented a policy allowing Muslim inmates to wear facility-issued religious head coverings, including kufis and hijabs, at any time and location at the facility. This provision protects religious expression and identity for incarcerated individuals.

Halal Meals: While pork is not served at the facility to cater to Adventist, Islamic and Jewish faiths, Muslim inmates can request Halal meals through the Chaplain. The facility has revised its menu to ensure that Halal options are available regularly, with meat options available three to four days a week.

Ramadan Meals: During the holy month of Ramadan, MCCF will continue to accommodate fasting inmates by providing meals timed for before sunrise and sunset. Inmates will receive a second meal to break their fast, along with additional bagged meals for sustenance. A festive meal will be offered at the end of Ramadan.

Prayer Accommodations: MCCF has permitted regular faith-based programming, including Jum’ah services on Fridays allowing all Muslim inmates the opportunity to participate in obligatory communal prayer. With an expected increase in volunteer support, the facility is exploring expanding its faith-based programming.

“These policies are a monumental step towards protecting the rights of incarcerated Muslims and preserving their dignity,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “We commend MCCR and DOCR for their flexibility and commitment to religious freedom and look forward to a continued partnership to facilitate these processes.”

CAIR offers an educational toolkit, called “A Correctional Institution’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” to help correctional officers and administrators gain a better understanding of Islam and Muslims.

CAIR Welcomes Recognition of Ramadan on Senate, House Floors in Maryland State Legislature

March 14, 2025

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today welcomed the acknowledgment of Ramadan on the Senate and House floors this week by State Senator Clarence Lam and State Delegate Sean Stinnett.

Their remarks served as a timely reminder of the importance of celebrating inclusivity and diversity in Maryland communities.

The holy month, observed by approximately 2 billion Muslims worldwide, is marked by fasting, prayer, and reflection.

“Delegate Stinnett and Senator Lam’s remarks honored Maryland’s Muslim community and fostered understanding and respect among all faiths,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “This recognition promotes inclusivity and appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions that make up Maryland.”

Earlier this month, CAIR congratulated Muslim communities on Governor Moore’s proclamation commemorating the holy month.

Two people arrested in connection with deadly shooting near Aurora mosque

Mar 15, 2025

By: Sydney Isenberg

AURORA, Colo. — Two people were arrested for allegedly killing an Aurora man who was handing over a pair of shoes that he had sold through an online marketplace.

According to the Aurora Police Department, officers were dispatched to a reported shooting near a mosque in the 10800 block of East Bethany Drive around 9:45 p.m. on March 11. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office identified him as Yousef Jamal Elnaffar, 23, of Aurora.

Investigators determined that Elnaffar went to the parking lot to hand over a pair of shoes that he had sold through an online marketplace when he was shot. Aurora PD called it an isolated incident and said there are no outstanding suspects.

Isaac Delacruz, 19, of Parker, was arrested late Thursday, while Kevin Hernandez-Gonzalez, 19, of Franktown, was arrested earlier this week in connection with Elnaffar's death. Aurora police said the two were booked into the Aurora Municipal Detention Center for first-degree murder and aggravated robbery, both felonies.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends and members of our community who have been impacted by this tragic and senseless crime,” said Mark Hildebrand, chief of Aurora PD's Investigations Division, in a statement. “The swift arrests of the suspects should serve as an example that the men and women of the Aurora Police Department will not rest until those who victimize our community are captured and held accountable for their actions.

“Our gratitude goes out to our partner agencies who provided critical support in the apprehension of these violent offenders. We hope the arrests provide the victim’s friends and family with a sense of justice they greatly deserve.”

Hernandez-Gonzalez is being held on a $1 million bond, while Delacruz was issued a no-bond hold. The 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office said it will file official charges against the two on March 19.

Aurora PD said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could earn a reward of up to $2,000.

Luxon says NZ must confront forces that led to mosque attacks on the sixth anniversary

March 15, 2025

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says the country must continue to confront the forces which led to the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks.

Luxon spoke at a Unity Hui in Christchurch on Saturday morning marking the sixth anniversary of the mosque attacks, which left 51 people dead and 89 injured.

On 15 March, a white supremacist terrorist from Australia stormed into Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre.

In his speech, Luxon said there was no place for Islamophobia in New Zealand.

"As we reflect on this day we must also confront the forces that led to this tragedy.

"Islamophobia - like all forms of hatred - has absolutely no place in New Zealand, and it is our duty to challenge it wherever it appears, whether it's in words, policies or in the silence that allows prejudice to fester," Luxon said.

"No one should ever feel unsafe because of their faith name or the way they pray."

He said New Zealanders must continue to confront hatred in policy and within communities.

Luxon said the anniversary was also a reminder to continue to build a stronger and more connected community.

"New Zealand is a multi-cultural nation, and the diversity of our communities is one of our strengths.

"Our Muslim community brings so much to New Zealand - you make invaluable contributions to New Zealand's social, cultural and economic fabric.

"In the aftermath of the March 15 attacks, your community demonstrated remarkable resilience, turning tragedy into action by working closely with the government, with civil society and with other communities to make New Zealand a more inclusive nation.

"And as a government, we are committed to that endeavour too," Luxon said.

The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand chairman Abdur Razzaq asked the Prime Minister - at the event - not to bring semi-automatic weapons back into the country.

The comment was in response to the coalition government currently rewriting the Arms Act.

The minister in charge, ACT's Nicole McKee, had previously signalled her displeasure with the previous government's reforms following the attack, and indicated access to the kinds of weapons used by the shooter could be liberalised.

Razzaq also asked the government to consider restorative justice.

"For the sake of our community, an opportunity of restorative justice for our community, they haven't had one - it was one of the recommendations."

A Royal Commission into the attack made 44 recommendations, while a coronial inquiry into the deaths remains ongoing.

The coalition government ended its response to the Royal Commission last August, scrapping eight recommendations in the process.

But Razzaq also said he meet with the Prime Minster last week, and said Luxon promised to do a "health check" on the recommendations.

"The government's commitment has not stopped, it is enduring, I know that," he said.

Luxon rescheduled his flight to India for a trade mission to be in Christchurch at the Hui.

Two judges order Trump administration to give fired workers their jobs back

15 March 2025

Two US judges have ordered several federal government agencies to reinstate the jobs of probationary employees fired en masse by the Trump administration last month.

In California, District Judge William Alsup called the sacking of these employees part of a "sham" strategy that aimed to circumvent proper procedures for reducing the federal workforce.

His order - which was followed by another from Maryland - applies to thousands of probationary workers who were fired at a range of departments, including defence, energy, treasury, and veterans affairs.

The Department of Justice says the firings were done based on guidance - rather than a directive - from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

The BBC has contacted OPM for comment.

OPM, a once-obscure agency that manages the federal government's civil service, has been thrust into the spotlight amid President Donald Trump's moves to slash the size of the federal workforce.

In Thursday's hearing in San Francisco, California, Judge Alsup countered the DOJ lawyer's arguments from the bench, citing evidence including termination letters that stated the firings were carried out on OPM's instructions.

"That should not have been done in our country," Judge Alsup said. "It was a sham in order to avoid statutory requirements."

Danielle Leonard, a lawyer representing a coalition of government employee unions, said probationary employees were targeted because they lacked the right to appeal.

During the hearing, Judge Alsup also lamented the firing of a government worker in Albuquerque, New Mexico who had been given top marks for performance but was then issued a pink slip citing performance as the cause of their termination.

"I just want to say it is a sad day when our government would fire a good employee and say it's for performance when they know good and well that's a lie," Judge Alsup said.

Judge Alsup's order was followed by a similar ruling from Baltimore, Maryland, by District Judge James Bredar, who agreed that Trump's team had broken regulations and cast doubt on the idea that the workers had been individually sacked for unsatisfactory performances.

Responding to the first ruling, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Judge Alsup of singlehandedly "attempting to unconstitutionally seize the power of hiring and firing from the executive branch".

She said that power rested with the president and "singular district court judges cannot abuse the power of the entire judiciary to thwart the president's agenda".

"The Trump administration will immediately fight back against this absurd and unconstitutional order," she added.

Elon Musk's name was not mentioned during the California hearing, but he has been tasked by President Trump with downsizing the federal workforce through the ad hoc Department of Government Efficiency - or Doge.

"He was on everybody's mind," said Luz Fuller, president of a local Sacramento branch of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 4,500 employees in Northern California.

The White House has denied that Musk is the agency's leader, although Trump labelled him as such during his Congressional address last week.

Catholic Bishops Visit Tinubu After Comments About Deplorable State Of Nigeria

14 March 2025

By Oladipo Abiola

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday, played host to a delegation of the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria at the State House, Abuja on Friday.

The development was confirmed in a statement by the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, who shared a video clip of the Bishops’ arival.

The visit comes a few days after the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) decried hardship in the country and heightened insecurity plaguing every part of the country.

Speaking during the 2025 First Plenary Meeting of the CBCN, held at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) in buja, the Church said many families can not afford three meals a day. It decried the increasing food inflation and mass drive of Nigerians into poverty.

On insecurity, the Catholic Church said it was worried that Nigerians were being abducted every day, tortured and killed. With many of its priests kidnapped and killed, the church called on the government to step up and protect the citizens.

The Bishops further expressed worry at the situation of productive youths of the country who have lost hope and have been seeking desperate means in search of a better future.

Catholic Church called on the government to prioritize job creation and vocational training programmes to engage youths.

Naija News recalls, however, that in a swift response, the presidency disagreed with the submission of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) on the country’s situation and economic outlook.

The presidency, in a statement on Monday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, submitted that contrary to the submission of the catholic bishops, Nigeria is moving in the right direction under the current administration.

Lagos pilgrims hold thanksgiving service, celebrate safe return from Israel, Jordan

March 14, 2025

 by David Bolarinwa

The Lagos State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board held a thanksgiving service on Thursday, March 13, 2024, at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Ikeja, to celebrate the successful and smooth completion of the 2024 pilgrimage to Israel and Jordan.

The event, themed “He Brought Us Back Rejoicing,” brought together pilgrims, government officials, and well-wishers to express gratitude for a safe journey and share testimonies of divine encounters.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, delivered a goodwill message, acknowledging initial concerns over the security situation in Gaza.

She expressed deep gratitude that all pilgrims returned safely without harm.

Secretary of the Lagos State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mrs. Yetunde Gbafe, also commended the smooth execution of the pilgrimage, noting that both batches of pilgrims returned without any cases of abscondment.

She credited the success of the journey to the unwavering support of the Lagos state government and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to the board’s activities.

“We were able to go and we came back safe and sound. And people, they have very many testimonies for what God has done. When we came back, we counted and none was missing.

“We also want to say a very big thank you to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, because he’s the one that has given us the enabling environment to be able to operate, without his enabling environment, we would not be able to perform.

“That’s why the state is actually a forerunner in all, in the pilgrimage exercise or in the pilgrimage leading. Everybody wants to come with Lagos State and it’s because of the governor that we have.”

A key highlight of the thanksgiving service was the series of testimonies shared by the pilgrims.

First-time pilgrims spoke passionately about the miracles and spiritual encounters they experienced while in the holy land.

Some recounted moments of personal healing, breakthroughs, and a renewed sense of faith during their visit to sacred sites in Jerusalem and Jordan.

The thanksgiving service underscored the significance of religious pilgrimages as a source of spiritual renewal and connection.

Details Of Tinubu’s Meeting With Catholic Bishops In Aso Rock Emerge

15 March 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

President Bola Tinubu has reassured the nation of better days ahead, affirming his administration’s commitment to listening to the needs of the people and implementing policies for sustainable growth.

Speaking on Friday while receiving members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu defended his decision to remove the fuel subsidy, describing it as a tough but necessary step to prevent Nigeria from financial collapse.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President explained that the reforms, though painful, were already yielding positive results.

“Yes, removing the fuel subsidy was hard, tough for me, but it was a choice that Nigeria had to face. We are not going to bankrupt our country,” he said.

According to Tinubu, the reforms have led to increased competition in the petroleum sector, improved agricultural yields, and a decline in commodity prices, signaling a gradual economic recovery.

“There is hope; people are coming in to invest. They are saying good things about Nigeria. I am very proud of that. What seemed like a very difficult beginning is now showing us hope. And we are not even at half-time yet. I am happy to see this period alive and healthy, and I am thankful to all of you for your prayers,” he added.

Addressing the nation’s security concerns, Naija News reports that Tinubu acknowledged the challenges affecting all Nigerians, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, stressing that security agencies were making significant progress in curbing threats.

“This insecurity affects everyone—Christians, Muslims alike. I have no religious bias; I won’t be a bigot. My wife is a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church,” he stated.

The President emphasized the need for national unity beyond religious and ethnic divisions, saying, “This country must develop and must stand beyond religious bigotry. And I’m here, open to you, ready to listen.”

Tinubu expressed gratitude to religious leaders for their continued prayers and support, noting that the country is already experiencing renewed optimism.

He reiterated that Nigeria’s economic outlook is improving, citing increased foreign investments, stabilizing fuel supply, and boosting agricultural production.

“We are witnessing a better deal, and there is renewed hope,” the President assured.

Edo: PDP React As Gov Okpebholo Suspends PSRT

14 March 2025

By Richard Ogunsile

The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has announced the indefinite suspension of the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT), which Kelly Okungbowa heads.

Naija News reports that this decision follows several complaints regarding the team’s conduct.

Earlier in the week, PSRT officers allegedly attempted to take control of a moving vehicle in the Ring Road area of Benin City.

This action resulted in the driver losing control, veering off the road, and crashing into a PoS kiosk, tragically leading to the death of a young girl.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, it has been confirmed that the task force is now suspended indefinitely.

“It is hereby announced for the information of the General Public that the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered the indefinite suspension of the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) headed by Kelly Okungbowa,” Ikhilor said on Friday.

“This decision is occasioned by several complaints received by the State Government on allegations of extortion, harassment, and unruly behaviour by members of the Team.”

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to maintaining law and order, emphasizing that any departure from the initial mission of the Team—namely, to support public order, safeguard public infrastructure, and address illegal activities such as street trading and unauthorized parking in our communities—will not be accepted.

The SSG indicated that a comprehensive evaluation of the team’s structure and operations will take place, focusing on recruitment and training of its members to guarantee that all government-approved activities in the State meet the highest standards.

PDP Reacts

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has, however, characterized the recent actions by the Governor as farcical, asserting that the governor is addressing only the symptoms rather than the underlying issues.

“This latest suspension, which involves allegations of extortion, harassment, and inappropriate conduct, represents the fourth in a series of suspensions that have plagued the Okpebholo administration within just three months of taking office. This includes the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie, as well as the Commissioner for Local Government Service Commission, Damian Lawani, both of whom were dismissed due to serious financial misconduct,” stated the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Chris Osa Nehikhare.

“Regrettably for Okpebholo, these suspensions are simply indicative of a deeper issue. The fundamental problem lies in the fact that he is operating under an illegitimate mandate.”

SADC forces withdrawal and M23 advance heighten DRC crisis-Analyst

14 March 2025

Around 1,300 SADC soldiers are set to leave the country as the M23, backed by Rwanda, continues its advance. Despite diplomatic sanctions, Kigali remains steadfast, defending its sovereignty.

Congolese analyst Christian Moleka warns that this situation is creating conditions for instability in the already fragile and mineral-rich eastern DRC.

"The complexity of the Congolese issue lies in the balancing act, where points are given to both Kinshasa and Kigali," Moleka explains. "This approach, however, is unfavorable to Kinshasa. While pressure and sanctions have been directed at Kinshasa, Rwanda continues to receive small concessions that balance the situation. But this strategy will not fundamentally resolve the issue; it may calm tensions in the short term, but the international community must eventually recognize who the aggressor and the victim are," said Christian Moleka, a political analyst.

The SADC's exit from the DRC is seen as a strategic failure, as Kinshasa had hoped to weaken the M23 militarily, as was done in 2013. However, the Congolese military lacks resources, and during their capture of Goma and Bukavu, the M23 managed to recruit dozens of soldiers who had fled the frontlines.

"There are significant reforms needed in the security apparatus," says Moleka. "Internal cohesion must be restored, and this will depend on the president’s ability to maneuver and use political levers to foster unity, reduce internal conflicts, and implement necessary reforms, particularly in military leadership. While there are still options, much depends on the choices made by key players," said Christian Moleka, a political analyst.

Kinshasa is also hesitant to engage in direct negotiations with the M23 under Luanda’s mediation. According to Moleka, the DRC has little choice but to enter into dialogue; at worst, the government may attempt to delay the talks by claiming the M23 is raising its demands.

"Kinshasa has little room to avoid going to Luanda," Moleka says. "International pressure is mounting for direct negotiations. We've seen this in Resolution 2773, at the African Union, and during the EAC-SADC summit, which calls for indirect talks. The M23 continues to advance in South Kivu, and there are concerns about the spread of fighting into regions like Kindu, Maniema, Tshopo Kisangani, and Katanga. This risk is also weighing heavily on Kinshasa," said Christian Moleka, a political analyst.

Meanwhile, the security and humanitarian situation remains critical in several North Kivu cities.

In response to the escalating crisis, UNHCR is urgently calling for international mobilization to prevent a full-blown humanitarian disaster. Without immediate assistance, thousands of lives are at risk.

UN Chief Says There Is 'Disturbing Rise In Anti-Muslim Bigotry'Around The World

MAR 15, 2025,

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday there was a "disturbing rise in anti-Muslim bigotry" around the world while urging online tech platforms to curb hate speech and harassment.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Guterres' video message came ahead of the International Day to combat Islamophobia. Rights groups around the world and the United Nations have noted a rise in Islamophobia, anti-Arab bias and antisemitism since the start of Israel's devastating military assault on Gaza following Palestinian Hamas militants' deadly October 7, 2023, attack.

KEY QUOTES

"We are witnessing a disturbing rise in anti-Muslim bigotry. From racial profiling and discriminatory policies that violate human rights and dignity, to outright violence against individuals and places of worship," the UN chief said, without mentioning any specific country or government.

"Online platforms must curb hate speech and harassment. And we must all speak out against bigotry, xenophobia and discrimination."

CONTEXT

Rights advocates have for years raised concerns about stigma faced by Muslims and Arabs because of how some people conflate those communities with Islamist militant groups.

At present, many pro-Palestinian activists, including in Western nations such as the United States, have complained and say that their advocacy for Palestinian rights is wrongly labeled by their critics as support for Hamas.

In recent weeks, rights watchdogs have published data noting record levels of anti-Muslim hate incidents and hate speeches in countries such as the UK, U.S. and India, among others. The governments of those countries say they aim to combat all forms of discrimination. REUTERS

Abidin Mosque Children Centre Allows Parent Congregants To Focus On Tarawih Prayers

15/03/2025

KUALA TERENGGANU, March 15 (Bernama) -- A transit centre that houses children aged three to seven years at the Terengganu state mosque, Abidin Mosque, here is giving space for parents to perform the tarawih prayer with more devotion. Abidin Mosque chief executive Wan Mohd Hazim Wan Mohd Hashim said the Raudah Aulad Centre or Children's Play Room, which has been open since the first night of Ramadan, has also received a positive response from worshippers because it allows them to pray without any interruption. "The purpose of opening this centre is to accommodate all parties, including parents and worshippers. It has been open since 2017 following the mosque's study after receiving feedback from worshippers who were distracted by cries or noise of children playing. "Besides, the noise can also affect the imam, for example, in memorising the surahs being read. On that basis, we are trying our best by taking this initiative for the good of all parties," he told Bernama recently. Wan Mohd Hazim said the centre was also the result of the mosque's concern over the worries of parents who, according to him, had searched on Facebook for mosques that provide childcare services to enable them to focus on their prayers."They know when their children cry or run around in the mosque, it can be disruptive but at the same time they want to concentrate on tarawih prayers at the mosque. So, this is the result," he said. Every night, an average of 20 children are free to play with various interesting activities at the centre, which is at the Abidin Mosque Library, under the care of three female assistants selected by the management. It will be open from 8 pm until the end of 20 rakaats of tarawih, which is around 10.30 pm. Abidin Mosque also said it did not make it mandatory for parents to leave their children there, but rather encourages worshippers with small kids to do so for the common good. "There are those who are still reluctant to place their children there... I understand it may be due to various reasons, especially issues on the safety of children in the care centre at the moment. "However, if you look at the children who came, even on the first day, some may cry, but the next day, Alhamdulillah, they were okay after getting to know their friends and guardians," he said, adding that the safety aspect is always a priority.  He also believed that there was no issue of children being prohibited from going to the mosque with the existence of the centre because he said that this group was only encouraged to go to the mosque when they were able to learn or receive information and knew how to take care of themselves or those attaining mumayyiz (a religous status for minors). -- BERNAMA

Trade wars, tariffs and sanctions weaponised in broader struggle for dominance - PM Anwar

BERNAMA

15-03- 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Trade wars, tariffs and sanctions have been transformed from economic tools into weapons in a broader struggle for dominance, fostering an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust that is eroding the foundations of international cooperation, according to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said countries that long viewed others as partners or competitors in a global marketplace now see only adversaries or proxies in a global contest for influence and dominance.

As the competition between the United States and China disrupts economies, technologies and alliances around the world, smaller and midsize countries are often forced to pick sides or risk becoming pawns in a larger geopolitical game, he said.

“As a new world order takes shape, we must also be mindful of the growing challenges facing countries across the Global South. Many of the mechanisms that once drove their development are weakening, while the very concept of development aid is coming under intense scrutiny from some of the world’s most powerful countries.

“Economic interdependence, once the cornerstone of global prosperity, has now become a source of tension. If this trend continues, interconnectedness could ultimately become a vulnerability, even for countries that have long flourished under globalisation,” he said in his commentary titled “The Global South Path’s to Economic Resilience” published on the Project Syndicate website on Friday (March 14).

As a country that relies on international trade, the Prime Minister said, Malaysia recognises that the crosswinds of uncertainty and protectionism make it more important than ever to remain adaptive and ambitious.Malaysian tourism guides

“But we will not lose sight of our paramount goal: sustainable, inclusive, and equitable growth. We are also determined to solidify our position as a vital nexus of trade, investment, and technological innovation,“ he added.

For these reasons, Malaysia made the strategic decision to join the BRICS group of major emerging economies, Anwar said.

He said its pursuit of BRICS membership advances the goal of narrowing the development disparities between the Global South and Global North.

“Contrary to some pundits’ claims, our decision was not about taking sides in the Sino-American rivalry. On the contrary, it reflects a clear-eyed understanding of the shifting geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape in which we operate.

“By engaging with rival power blocs and creating a diverse array of viable economic opportunities, middle powers like Malaysia can pave the way for lasting peace and prosperity for their citizens in the Global South. For us, that remains a critical goal and urgent priority,” he added.
