‘Uniform Civil Code Is Not Acceptable As It Conflicts
With Sharia Law’, Says All India Muslims Personal Law Board
August 18, 2024
Moreover, Dr. Ilyas criticised the Prime Minister for
using the term "secular civil code" instead of the constitutionally
accurate "uniform civil code." (Image: ANI)
----------------
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB)
announced on Saturday that they would not accept a uniform or secular civil
code, as it would conflict with Sharia law, which they are unwilling to
compromise on.
In a press statement, the AIMPLB criticised Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s recent Independence Day address, where he advocated
for a Secular Civil Code and referred to religious personal laws as communal.
The board described the Prime Minister’s remarks as highly objectionable.
During his speech, PM Modi stated, “A large segment of
society believes, and with some justification, that the existing civil code is,
in effect, a communal civil code. It fosters discrimination, divides the nation
along religious Lines, and encourages inequality.”
The AIMPLB reaffirmed their commitment to Sharia law,
with spokesperson Dr. SQR Ilyas expressed surprise at the Prime Minister’s
characterisation of religious-based personal laws, like Sharia, as communal.
According to the AIMPLB, Muslims in India are entitled
to practise laws in accordance with their religion, as guaranteed by the
Shariat Application Act, 1937, and the Constitution of India. Article 25 of the
Constitution grants citizens the fundamental right to profess, propagate and
practise their religion, including adherence to its laws.
Dr. Ilyas also pointed out that the family laws of
other communities in India are rooted in their respective religious and
traditional customs. He argued that the push for a uniform civil code is a
Western concept, not suited to India’s diverse traditions. He further stated
that the directive principles, often cited as the basis for a uniform civil
code, are not enforceable legal provisions.
Moreover, Dr. Ilyas criticised the Prime Minister for
using the term “secular civil code” instead of the constitutionally accurate
“uniform civil code,” suggesting that this was a deliberate attempt to mislead
the public and target Sharia law, without considering the broader implications
for class, caste, and tribal communities in India.
In his press statement, Dr. Ilyas urged citizens,
particularly on Independence Day, to remember the sacrifices of freedom
fighters and their vision of a free, just, and peaceful India, rather than
being swayed by the religious polarisation he accused the Prime Minister of
fostering.

Far-Right Spreads False Claims About Muslim Attacks In
Bangladesh; Buildings Burning, Horrifying Violence And Women Weeping
Shruti Menon
18-08-2024
After Sheikh Hasina's abrupt resignation, Hindu
families have felt vulnerable to attacks
---------------
The videos are shocking: buildings burning, horrifying
violence and women weeping as they plead for help.
They are - the people sharing them say - proof of a
“Hindu genocide” happening in Bangladesh in the wake of the sudden fall of the
country’s long-time leader, Sheikh Hasina.
Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who uses the name Tommy
Robinson – a British far-right activist who has been criticised for making
inflammatory posts during the UK riots – has got involved, sharing videos along
with dark warnings.
Bangladesh has been in the headlines for weeks:
student-led protests which left more than 400 dead culminated with the
government falling and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India on 5
August.
Celebrations escalated into violent unrest, with
rioters targeting members of her ruling Awami League party which is made up of
both Hindu and Muslim members.
And while reports on the ground have found violence
and looting impacted Hindu people and properties, far-right influencers in
neighbouring India shared false videos and information that gave a misleading
view of the events.
However, BBC Verify has determined that this building,
identified as the Navagraha Temple in Chittagong, was undamaged by the incident
which actually occurred at a nearby Awami League party office.
X An X (formerly known as Twitter) post with a picture
of a Hindu temple with smoke in the background. It falsely claims the temple is
on fire.X
“On 5 August, there was an attack on the Awami League
office premises behind the temple in the afternoon,” Swapan Das, a staff member
at the temple, told BBC Verify. “They took the furniture outside and set fire
to it.”
Mr Das added that although the temple was not attacked
on the day, the situation remains tense and the temple has been shut with
people guarding it round-the-clock.
This is far from the only story shared, most under the
same hashtag, which has had nearly a million mentions since 4 August, according
to social media monitoring tool Brandwatch. Accounts that were mostly
geolocated to India drove the trend.
Other viral posts which have since been debunked
include a claim that a Bangladeshi Hindu cricketer’s home had been burned down.
BBC Verify has established the house in fact belongs to a Muslim MP from the
Awami League.
X An X post (formerly known as Twitter) with a picture
of a Bangladeshi Hindu cricketer Liton Das and another picture of a house on
fire. The post falsely claims it's his house.X
Then there was the school that burned down, which the
BBC visited. Again, the reasons behind the attack appear to be political rather
than religious.
Inter-religious strains have been present in
Bangladesh for many decades, says Professor Sayeed Al-Zaman, an expert in hate
speech and disinformation in Bangladesh.
Following the hasty departure of Sheikh Hasina,
matters have come to a head once again, “as Hindus felt insecure in the absence
of the government and effective law and order”, says Prof Al-Zaman.
Some of these posts falsely claiming that Hindus have
been targeted by Muslims have been shared by accounts far removed from either
Bangladesh or India.
Tommy Robinson who has been criticised for posting
inflammatory messages about the violent riots targeting Muslims and immigrants
across the UK, has been sharing unverified videos from Bangladesh, where he
says there is “a genocide on Hindus”.
X An X (formerly known as Twitter) retweet by Tommy
Robinson with a video of a Hindu woman begging for help. The source he is
retweeting falsely claims "Islamists" vandalised her home.X
We have investigated one video shared by him. It shows
a woman pleading for her husband’s life as her home is attacked. The post
falsely claims the property is being targeted by “Islamists”. The original
video was shared on 6 August, onde day after the property had been attacked.
We were told by a group of local students who had
assisted the woman in defending her property that the dispute was about an
entirely different matter. They shared photos and videos of the clean-up with
the BBC which show the property as seen in the original video. The Hindu temple
inside the property is unharmed.
“The conflict is about ownership of land. A case was
filed long ago,” a student told us. A case has been in local courts about the
ownership of the land for nearly six months.
We’ve spoken to other people in the local area who’ve
told us that the attack was not religiously motivated and that the perpetrators
were a mix of Hindu and Muslim people. They also reported that other Hindu
families and temples in the area weren’t affected.
Many real incidents and attacks have taken place
across the country, but the motivations are difficult to assess: religion or
politics.
The two are closely entwined: one Hindu resident
explained how the minority are largely viewed as supporters of Sheikh Hasina’s
secular Awami League party.
Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, a
non-profit established to protect minority human rights, reported five Hindu
people killed. Two have been confirmed as Awami League members.
“It’s our responsibility to protect them,” said
Moinul, who stood watch last week in front of a temple in Hatharazi, outside of
Chittagong.

ALBAWABA - Jeff Monson, a famous American athlete who
converted to Islam, attended his first Friday prayer in the Turkish Grand
National Assembly mosque. Palestinians' resiliency during wars led Monson to
convert to Islam.
After praying, Monson met with TBMM Speaker
NumanKurtulmuş and praised Turkey's unwavering support for Palestine. In an
interview with TBMM TV, Monson stressed the spiritual value of his experience
and how much he had expected it. The most significant thing to me was feeling
closer to Allah. I connected deeply with my praying brothers. My conversion to
Islam was based on brotherhood "Monson said.
Monson thanked Speaker Kurtulmuş for his expertise and
politeness, stating that Turkey's approach goes beyond national issues to
global ones. He was impressed by Turkey's humanitarian initiatives.
Monson offered his thanks to President Recep Tayyip
Erdoğan and the Turkish people for their consistent support of Palestine. He
saw tremendous camaraderie with the Palestinian people in Turkey and noted that
Turkey's aid and trips to Gaza show real support.
Monson concluded by thanking the Turkish Parliament
and its residents for supporting Palestinians and the entire Muslim community.
His conversion to Islam was met with criticism, but he got immense support from
throughout the world. He underlined the global desire for peace, regardless of
religion. Monson thanked Allah and his Muslim brothers, feeling pleased by his
new beliefs.

St John's Church, in Hanley, Dating Back To 1788, Being Turned Into Mosque To Include Museum,
Gym And Cinema
By Rob Andrews
17 AUG 2024
Vice president of the Darul Falah centre, Sayyad
Hashemi, centre, inside St John's Church in Town Road, Hanley. The group intend
to transform it into a mosque and an education and community centre.
--------------
Ambitious plans to turn a landmark church into a
mosque include a museum, women's-only gym, and education centre. Plans have now
been approved to convert the Grade II*-listed St John's Church, in Hanley, back
into a place of worship and community centre.
The Town Road church dates back to 1788 before it
closed in the 1980s and up until 2020 was used as an antiques centre and
tearoom. It was last year snapped up by The Darul Falah centre for £140,000.
But the project has been marred with controversy after
a social media video appeared to show stacks of gravestones, some of them
damaged, as external works were being carried out at the site. Stoke-on-Trent
City Council says it has 'no evidence' of graves being disturbed.
Now The Darul Falah centre has released its wider
plans for the site. These include a community centre with craft fairs,
festivals and fun days; a women's-only gym; school tours; a multi-faith
library; an 'educational cinema'; Islamic weddings and burials; an education
centre focusing on Islamic education, English language and science; and an arts
and history museum.
The Darul Falah group have bought St John's Church in
Town Road, Hanley. Pictured are the committee with vice chairman Sayyad
Hashemi, far right.
"We plan to enhance visitor engagement by moving
and showcasing historical windows and artefacts on the first floor,
safeguarding these exquisite windows from potential harm. This pro-active
measure comes in response to some of the windows already suffering damage due
to vandalism."
The spokesman added: "The project aims to
repurpose the esteemed St John's Church into The House of Success, creating a
multi-functional community centre that will contribute to the enrichment of
Stoke-on-Trent's city centre, in-keeping with the Church of England's ethos.
The intent is to utilise the space for communal engagement, cultural and
spiritual growth, and educational initiatives. By integrating educational
tours, an arts and history museum, and various community services we strive to
establish a dynamic and inclusive venue that promotes inter-faith conversation,
invigorates the local economy, boosts tourism, and produces substantial revenue
for the city and the centre."

Victims of gruesome Chagai executions ‘identified as
Afghans’
August 18, 2024
QUETTA: The bodies of five men, which were found
hanging from electricity poles in Dalbandin town of Chagai district a day
earlier, were identified on Saturday. However, no one has claimed
responsibility for the killings so far.
“All five victims are Afghan nationals and residents
of Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan,” Muhammad Jawad, an official from the Shah Fahad Bin
Sultan Hospital, told Dawn, adding that the bodies were identified with the
help of Muhammad Yahya, a resident of Girdi Jangle, an Afghan refugee camp in
Chagai district, who visited the hospital where the bodies were kept.
Police investigating the killings suspect that the
five victims may be the same group who appeared in a viral video on social
media, making confessional statements about the murder of Murad Notezai, a
prominent leader of the Iran-based banned militant organisation Jaish al-Adl.
The militant group, which operates in the
Sistan-Baluchestan region of Iran, may have kidnapped and executed these
people, possibly in retaliation for the killing of their leader, sources said.
However, officials and independent sources have yet to
confirm whether the bodies found are of the same individuals who appeared in
the video, or if they are unrelated individuals killed due to personal
vendettas.
“We are investigating the incident to determine
whether the deceased are the same individuals who made confessional statements
in the video or if they are unrelated individuals,” a senior police officer
said.

In Assam, mob assaults boy, accusing him of ‘love
jihad’. Police arrests him under POCSO
18-08-2024
The police in Assam’s Cachar district on Friday
arrested a Muslim boy, hours after he was beaten up by a mob of Hindu
youngsters for talking to a female friend. The mob accused him of “love jihad”.
“Love jihad” is a conspiracy theory espoused by
Hindutva groups, alleging that Hindu women are forcibly converted to Islam
through marriage.
The incident took place near a higher secondary school
at Narsingpur under the district’s Sonai police station area, where Ali Ahmed
had gone to meet his friend on Independence Day.
At about 8 am, when Ali and the girl were talking to
each other near the school, a group of boys from the Hindu community confronted
him and asked his name.

Rajasthan: House of minor Muslim boy accused of
stabbing classmate bulldozed in Udaipur
18-08-2024
The Udaipur Municipal Corporation on Saturday
demolished the rented home of a 15-year-old Muslim boy accused of stabbing his
Hindu classmate, on the grounds that the structure was illegally built on land
belonging to the forest department, reported The Hindu.
“The owner was not able to provide any form of
ownership document, after which the house was demolished,” Udaipur Inspector
General Ajay Lamba told The Indian Express.
Lamba added that the minor and his father have been
detained and that further action would be taken in accordance with the Juvenile
Justice Act. It is unclear what specific charges have been invoked against the
parent.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of
civic authorities in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states summarily demolishing
purportedly illegal properties of those accused of crime, mostly Muslims.

Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina: Will it become next
Afghanistan or Pakistan?
Aug 17, 2024
The ongoing political upheaval in Bangladesh, marked
by the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has raised concerns about
the future trajectory of the nation.
Analysts are drawing parallels between Bangladesh's
current situation and the political landscapes of Afghanistan and Pakistan,
both of which have experienced significant turmoil in recent years.
Following her resignation, Hasina fled to India,
leading to the establishment of an interim government led by Nobel laureate
Muhammad Yunus, which has raised questions about the stability and legitimacy
of the new administration.
According to a UN report, over 600 have been killed in
the current unrest. Of these, nearly 400 deaths were reported from July 16 to
August 4, while around 250 people were reportedly killed following the new wave
of protests between August 5 and 6," the UN report said.
At least 52 of the country's 64 districts have been
affected by incidents of sectarian violence since August 5, the day Hasina fled
to India.

Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh: Return of the Islamists
KallolBhattacherjee
August 18, 2024
In the tsunami of slogans that swept away the Sheikh
Hasina government earlier this month, this particular one (“We asked for our
rights but became razakars”), dripping with sarcasm, stood out as the summary
of the political history of Bangladesh’s independent existence. As her law and
order machinery overplayed their hands, Ms. Hasina described the protesters as
‘razakars’, the anti-liberation forces of 1971 who opposed Bangladesh’s
freedom. But it turned out that Ms. Hasina, despite her best efforts, failed to
contain the anti-liberation forces that were most effectively represented by
the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.

Why Bangladesh’s Mujib-focused history came under
attack
by Adrija Roychowdhury
August 18, 2024
The image of the public desecration of Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman’s statue in Dhaka is perhaps the most telling spectacle of resistance in
the ongoing political developments in Bangladesh. The attack on Mujib would
appear to be a symbol of opposition to the dominant historical narrative about
the Bangladesh Liberation War as we have known for decades. Scholars suggest
that this reading of Bangladesh’s history is not necessarily untrue, but
exaggerates certain episodes and characters while obliterating others.
The Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 was indeed a
watershed moment in the history of the subcontinent. The making of Bangladesh
altered both the geography and the geopolitics in the region. Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman is often seen as the ‘father’ of this new nation, representative of
Bengali middle-class aspirations that fought against the domination of West
Pakistan. The 1971 war, in that sense, has been central to the nation-building
project in Bangladesh.
NayanikaMookherjee, Professor of Political
Anthropology at Durham University, UK, suggests that since the birth of
Bangladesh in 1971, every regime change in the country has been accompanied by
a re-writing of its history and a re-adjustment of the signposts of history.
“In 1996, when the Awami League came to power, a predominant part of society
across all classes accepted their narrative of the centrality of leadership of
Sheikh Mujib for Muktijuddho (Bangladesh Liberation War) and his seventh of
March clarion call for independence as the watershed moment of the liberation
war,” says Mookherjee, who has authored the book The Spectral Wound: Sexual
Violence, Public Memories, and the Bangladesh War of 1971 (2015).
For the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), though, it
was the night of March 25, 1971, when the Pakistan Army carried out Operation
Searchlight to curb Bengali nationalist sentiment that became the most important
signpost of Bangladesh’s history. The BNP is the primary Opposition party in
Bangladesh and was founded by General Ziaur Rahman or General Zia in 1978. In
the BNP’s version of the historical narrative, General Zia is at the centre.
General Zia had made the official radio announcement
of the independence of Bangladesh in the early hours of March 26, 1971, and
later was appointed the commander of the first conventional brigade of the
Bangladesh forces, which launched major attacks on Pakistani forces. “Sheikh
Mujib and General Zia fought together for the country’s liberation. In a radio
broadcast from Kalurghat, Zia accepted Mujib as the country’s leader. However,
the Awami League’s narration enforces that only Mujib and AL cadres fought for
the country’s liberation,” explains Amit Ranjan, a research fellow on
Bangladesh politics at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
“The BNP believes in a more militarised version of the
liberation war while the Awami League prefers to concentrate on the civilian aspect
of the war with Sheikh Mujib at the helm,” explains Mookherjee.
Recently, under the Awami League government and the
Digital Security Act, any criticism of Sheikh Mujib or government policies
became severely punitive, leading to imprisonments, unsuspended charges, deaths
and an authoritarian control of the narrative.

Political analysts in Bangladesh urge India to refix
ties with Dhaka
Aug 18 2024
India will benefit if it supports the current
transition government in Bangladesh and moves to build relationships with other
political parties instead of focussing on one person and party, political
analysts, foreign relations and security experts said on Sunday.
After the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, took oath as the Chief Adviser of the
interim government on August 8 amid violence and chaos.
Hasina, 76, fled to India on August 5 after she was
forced to resign following a massive protest by students against a quota system
in government jobs.
I think understanding should be the starting point for
resetting our relationship, having that we have our interdependence, so we need
each other to recalibrate our relationship, head of the leading think tank
Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) Humayun Kabir told PTI.
He said being Bangladesh's next-door neighbour, India
was always with us when we were in difficulty and in the current transition
also if they come and support us then I think people of Bangladesh will look at
India as a friend.
Kabir, a career diplomat, said India would benefit if
it positively supports the current transition in Bangladesh along with moving
to build relationships with other political parties, instead of focusing on one
person and party taking into account the uniqueness of the change.
In his first direct conversation over a week after
becoming the chief advisor of Bangladesh's interim government, Yunus on Friday
conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a phone conversation that Dhaka
would prioritise protection and safety of Hindus and all other minority groups.

India accuses Bangladesh’s interim leaders of failing
to protect Hindus
18-08-2024
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s India has accused
Bangladesh’s new government of failing to protect the country’s Hindu minority,
fuelling tensions between the south Asian neighbours and key regional partners.
Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister of Bangladesh
who was toppled this month after weeks of protests, was close to New Delhi and
a linchpin of India’s strategy to counter China and Islamist extremism in South
Asia.
But India’s support for her increasingly autocratic
government, which ordered a crackdown on student protesters that resulted in
hundreds of deaths, has sparked widespread anger towards New Delhi in Bangladesh.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India last week.
In the ensuing violence, minorities including Hindus
were attacked in many parts of Muslim-majority Bangladesh and hundreds
reportedly massed at the Indian border to seek refuge in their predominantly
Hindu neighbour. About 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s 170mn-strong population is
Hindu.
The attacks have caused alarm and fuelled hostility in
India towards Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace
Prize-winning economist. Hindu groups have called for Modi’s government to do
more to protect them, with hundreds protesting in the Indian capital on Friday
against the “atrocities” in Bangladesh. Modi on Thursday said that “1.4bn
Indians are worried about the safety of the Hindus”.
“Indians want the security of Hindus and minorities
there to be ensured,” said Modi, whose religious nationalist Bharatiya Janata
party sees itself as a champion of Hindu interests.

Gaza ceasefire progress is an illusion, says Hamas
18-08-2024
Hamas has described suggestions of progress on an
Israel-Gaza ceasefire deal as an illusion, after US President Joe Biden said he
was feeling "optimistic".
And on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu's office said Israeli negotiators had expressed "cautious
optimism" about moving towards agreement on a deal.
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to
destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7
October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage.
A ceasefire deal agreed in November saw Hamas release
105 of the hostages in return for a week-long ceasefire and the freeing of some
240 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Israel says 111 hostages are still
being held, 39 of whom are presumed dead.
In a recent joint statement, the US, Qatar and Egypt
stated that they had presented a proposal for a ceasefire and hostage release
deal that "narrows the gaps" between Israel and Hamas.

US ‘bridging proposal’ for Gaza deal said to exclude
two of Netanyahu’s key demands
18-08-2024
The US “bridging proposal” designed to enable the
finalizing of a hostages-for-ceasefire deal in the coming week does not provide
for an ongoing Israeli presence along the Gaza-Egypt border or for a mechanism
in central Gaza to prevent the return of armed Hamas forces to the Strip’s
north, as demanded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hebrew media reported
Saturday, citing unnamed officials familiar with the talks.
Channel 12 reported that negotiations involving the US
and Israel are set to continue in Cairo on Sunday. Only if Israel and the US
can agree on terms for these two key issues will Egypt and Qatar press Hamas to
take the deal, the report said. Hamas has made clear that it will not agree to a
deal that accommodates these two Israeli demands, the report noted.
The TV report added that Netanyahu, who has repeatedly
insisted on these two demands in recent weeks, is expected to hold a crucial
discussion with Israel’s negotiators and security chiefs, focused on these
issues, before Sunday’s talks get underway in the Egyptian capital.
In a statement issued on Saturday evening, Netanyahu’s
office said Israel’s negotiators had briefed him on the talks, and “expressed
cautious optimism regarding the possibility of advancing a deal.” It said the
new US proposal, which was conveyed to Israel and to Hamas on Friday at the end
of two days of talks between Israel and the mediators in Doha, “contains
components that are acceptable to Israel.”
“We must hope that the heavy pressure on Hamas from
the United States and the mediators leads to the removal of its opposition to
the American proposal, and allows for a breakthrough in the contacts,” the
statement added.

Israel strikes Gaza as Blinken heads to region to try
to help close cease-fire deal
By WAFAA
SHURAFA
August 18, 2024
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli strikes
across Gaza killed 19 people overnight, including a woman and her six children,
as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken headed to the region on Sunday to try
to seal a cease-fire deal after months of contentious negotiations.
The U.S. and fellow mediators Egypt and Qatar appeared
to be closing in on a deal after two days of talks in Doha, with American and
Israeli officials expressing cautious optimism. But Hamas has signaled
resistance to what it says are new demands by Israel, and the long-running
talks have repeatedly stalled.
The evolving proposal calls for a three-phase process
in which Hamas would release all hostages abducted during its Oct. 7 attack,
which triggered the deadliest war ever fought between Israelis and
Palestinians. In exchange, Israel would withdraw its forces from Gaza and
release Palestinian prisoners.

Russians’ Interest in Islam Worrying Some Close to
Moscow Patriarchate
Paul Goble
18-08-2024
Staunton, Aug. 18 – Russians purchased 70 percent more
books about Islam in the first half of 2024 than they did in the same period a
year earlier, while they bought only 30 percent more books about Orthodox
Christianity, a warning sign, some near the ROC MP say, of a growing interest
in Islam among young Russians at the expense of Orthodox Christianity.
Some Orthodox leaders even believe, Novyyeizvestiya
journalist Ivan Zubov says, that this pattern shows that young Russians are now
ready to turn from an aging Orthodoxy to a younger and more vigorous Islam as a
source of values
(newizv.ru/news/2024-08-15/islam-nastupaet-pochemu-eta-religiya-stanovitsya-vse-populyarnee-v-rossii-432603).
On this trend, Zubov cites the observations of
Christian publicism Maksim Dakhov that ever more young Russians are turning
away from Orthodoxy because they do not find it providing them with the
inspiration they need and becoming Muslims instead (christian-spirit.ru/561-pochemu-russkaya-molodezh).

Govt claims ex-spy chief was part of Imran-led
conspiracy
August 18, 2024
ISLAMABAD: The government on Saturday accused PTI
founder Imran Khan of masterminding a political conspiracy, along with a
retired general and other characters, to sow anarchy and disharmony in the
country, with the information minister hinting that the ambit of the probe
against Gen Faiz Hameed and his other “co-conspirators” would be widened in
days to come.
Meanwhile, just days after distancing himself from the
former spymaster, who is currently facing court martial proceedings, Mr Khan
seemed to endorse claims that he and the retired general were close, saying the
latter’s transfer to the Peshawar corps was part of the conspiracy hatched
against the PTI government.
In a presser on Saturday, the information minister
said that in the wake of Gen Faiz Hameed’s arrest, the army has conducted
transparent investigations as they have their own mechanism of internal
accountability, adding that they believed in self-accountability.
Referring to the arrests made in this regard, and
hinting at further action in the days to come, the information minister claimed
that Imran Khan had conspired with these people to spread anarchy in the
country.
“This was a political alliance, led by the PTI
founder, which was linked with Gen Faiz and other accomplices,” he said, adding
that the ambit of the investigation would definitely widen.

PML-N ally cries foul over ‘subsidy for Punjab’
Imran Ayub
August 18, 2024
KARACHI: After the PML-N-led Punjab government
subsidised electricity for consumers using up to 500 units, its ally in the
Centre, the MQM-P, on Saturday kicked up a fuss about the Rs45 billion subsidy,
saying the Punjab-centric incentive would give rise to ‘despair’ in other parts
of the country.
In a press conference on Friday, former prime minister
Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that
the provincial government would provide relief of Rs14 per unit in electricity
bills up to 500 units for August and September. The move was largely seen as an
attempt to placate PML-N’s vote bank in Punjab.
Taking exception, MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal
questioned the announcement made by Nawaz Sharif, calling it
‘unwarranted’. Instead of the elder Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
should have provided relief in power bills for the entire country, he
maintained.
According to Mr Kamal, with the kind of inflation the
masses had been facing, the federal government should have announced a relief
of at least Rs20 per unit for the entire country. “The announcement only for
Punjab would only ensure a feeling of despair in other parts of the country,”
he said.

Mali: Deadly Clashes Between Army and Jihadists in
Mopti Region
18-08-2024
At least fifteen members of Mali's Defense and
Security Forces (FDS) were killed on Thursday during a fierce clash with
jihadists in the Mopti region, near the town of Diallassagou. The soldiers were
on patrol, tasked with securing local farmers heading to their fields when they
were ambushed by jihadists affiliated with the Group for the Support of Islam
and Muslims (JNIM).
The attack took place near a hillside, where the
jihadists, equipped with motorcycles, vehicles, and on foot, launched a sudden
and intense assault. The Malian army responded with heavy gunfire, leading to a
prolonged and deadly exchange. According to reports, one gendarme and 14
national guard members were killed, with others injured or missing. Sources
indicate that the attackers suffered minimal losses.
This incident highlights the ongoing security
challenges in central Mali, where jihadist groups remain active, occupying
localities, imposing their own laws, and holding at least 150 civilians hostage
for several months. Despite efforts to secure the region, the jihadists continue
to pose a significant threat to stability in the area.

The 48.5 km loop around the island is one of three

and the largest of the three, the Manhattan 20 Bridges.
Abdulrahman, who has been swimming with Ghaith for

the fourth Saudi to do so — and bringing him one swim away from earning the
title.
The Saudi brothers completed Manhattan’s 20 Bridges

‘the triple crown’ of open-water swimming. (Supplied)
Both brothers are engineers at Saudi Aramco:
Abdulrahman, 26, has a degree in electrical and electronics engineering and has
been working as a control engineer for three years, and Ghaith, 23, holds a
degree in computer science and engineering and has been working as a metrics
engineer for a year.
“I have to attribute our start with swimming to our
father, to our parents,” Abdulrahman told Arab News. “My father used to be a

after non-Muslim upbringing
18 Aug 2024
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 18 — The High Court here declared

religion of Islam and for the National Registration Department to replace his

“It is my considered view that since the plaintiff was

DAP MP wants Muhyiddin investigated for sedition over
remarks against previous Agong
By Malay Mail
18 Aug 2024
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Jelutong MP RSN Rayer has urged
the police to investigate former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over
allegedly seditious remarks about the previous Yang diPertuan Agong.
According to Malaysiakini, the DAP federal lawmaker
lodged a report over the matter, citing a TikTok video in which Muhyiddin is
alleged to have made the remarks while campaigning for the by-election in
Nenggiri, Kelantan.
“I would like to point out that the statements made by
Muhyiddin in the eyes of Malaysian criminal law are an element of contempt and
insult to the royal institution, and can rouse the public’s anger against the
royal institution,” Rayer said in his report.
In the offending video, Muhyiddin could be heard
claiming he had the support of 115 MPs that, if true, would have enabled him to
form the government after the 15th general election.

US: Jill Stein announces Muslim convert as VP running
mate at online event
Brooke Anderson
17 August, 2024
US Green Party candidate Jill Stein announced her pick
for her vice-presidential running mate at an online event on Friday night -
academic, activist and Muslim convert Rudolph "Butch" Ware.
The announcement came after days of speculation over
who Stein would choose in her, by all indications, quixotic campaign for
president.
Over the past several days, multiple names - mainly
Arab Americans - have been floated as Stein's VP contender, however Ware's name
did not appear in most major news reports on the subject.
After Stein announced him as her running mate, Ware
described himself as a "willing warrior with resolve in the cause of
liberation."

Trump criticises Harris’ newly announced
‘Kamalanomics’ over federal pricing plan
Aug 18, 2024
Former President Donald Trump criticised Vice
President Harris's newly announced economic plan, labelling it as "full
communist" during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Trump attacked
Harris's federal price control proposal on food and groceries, comparing it to
failed economic policies from Venezuela and the Soviet Union, which he claimed
would lead to rationing, hunger, and skyrocketing prices.
Speaking to supporters at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey
Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania, Trump said, "In her speech
yesterday, Kamala went full communist. You heard that? She went full
communist."
He added, “Comrade Kamala announced that she wants to
institute socialist price controls. You saw that? Never worked before. This is
the Maduro plan in Venezuela, the Maduro plan of the old Soviet Union. They
tried it there. And how did the Soviet Union turn out?”

'They turned him down because he’s Jewish': Trump on
Kamala Harris picking Walz over Josh Shapiro as VP pick
Aug 18, 2024
Former President Donald Trump addressed a campaign
rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where he announced that there has
"never been a more dangerous time since the Holocaust" to be Jewish
in the US.
He specifically noted that Vice President Kamala
Harris had bypassed selecting Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as her running
mate due to his Jewish faith.
"They turned him down because he’s Jewish,"
Trump told the crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena. "They turned him down for other
reasons, but the primary reason is because he’s Jewish." Trump continued,
"Any Jewish person that votes for [Harris] or a Democrat has to go out and
have their head examined."
