Secular Civil Code In India: Laws Which Divide The
Country On Communal Lines And Become A Reason For Inequality Have No Place In A
Modern Society, Says PM
PTI New Delhi /15.08.24
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation from
the Red Fort on 78th Independence Day, in New Delhi, Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024.
PTI
----------------
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said a
"secular civil code" is the need of the hour for the country, as he
described the existing set of laws as "communal civil code" and
termed them discriminatory.
In his Independence Day address from the ramparts of
the Red Fort, Modi said, "A large section of the country believes, which
is true also, that the civil code is actually in a way is a communal civil
code. It discriminates (among people)." He said laws which divide the
country on communal lines and become a reason for inequality have no place in a
modern society.
"I would say, it is the need of the hour that
India has a secular civil code. We have lived 75 years with a communal civil
code. Now, we have to move towards a secular civil code. Only then would
religion-based discrimination end," he said.
The prime minster noted that the Supreme Court has
given various directions in this regard. The spirit of the Constitution also
encourages such a uniform code, he said, referring to Article 44 under the
Directive Principles of State Policy.
The article states that it is the duty of the State to
secure for the citizens a Uniform Civil Code throughout the territory of India.
"It is our responsibility to fulfil the dream of the makers of our
Constitution. I believe there should be a serious discussion on the subject."
Uttarakhand came out with its own uniform civil code recently.
The Central government had referred the issue of a
common code to the Law Commission, which began fresh public consultations on
the issue last year.
Before that, the 21st Law Commission, which was in operation
till August 2018, had examined the issue and solicited the views of all
stakeholders on two occasions. Subsequently, a consultation paper on
"Reforms of Family Law" was issued in 2018.
In its consultation paper issued on August 31, 2018,
the 21st Law Commission, headed by Justice (retd) B S Chauhan, had said the
diversity of Indian culture can and should be celebrated, and specific groups
or weaker sections of society must not be "dis-privileged" in the
process.
It said the Commission dealt with laws that are
discriminatory rather than providing a uniform civil code "which is
neither necessary nor desirable at this stage".
The consultation paper said most countries are now
moving towards recognition of difference, and the mere existence of difference
does not imply discrimination but is indicative of a robust democracy.
In short, a uniform civil code means having a common
law for all citizens of the country that is not based on religion. Personal
laws and laws related to inheritance, adoption and succession are likely to be
covered by a common code.

Satirical cartoons in the Arab press lampoon Iran for delaying
attack on Israel
By GianlucaPacchiani
14 August 2024
Syrian-Kurdish cartoonist Yaser Ahmad, who works for
the London-based Al-Arab paper, shows Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei
about to light a firework rocket with a ridiculously long wick wrapped around
two coils, under the caption “The Iranian response,” indicating that it may be
a long time coming, August 9, 2024. (screenshot, used in accordance with Clause
27a of the Copyright Law)
---------------
As Israelis wait in uncertainty and trepidation for an
Iranian attack that may or may not materialize in retaliation for the
assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, some media outlets in the Arab
world have begun to ridicule Tehran’s perceived empty threats and
grandstanding.
Idit Bar, an Arabic teacher, lecturer and avid
collector of Arab caricatures — who since the war with Hamas has been a face of
Arabic-language public advocacy — shared some of the recent illustrations that
have appeared in Arab newspapers mocking Iranian leaders and discussed them
with The Times of Israel.
The Algerian paper Arwas published a cartoon showing
an Iranian cleric throwing a paper airplane, with a caption reading, “Everyone
is waiting for the Iranian reaction after the assassination of the martyr
Haniyeh.” This image aims to portray Iran as a “paper tiger,” Bar noted.
Celebrity Jordanian illustrator Emad Hajjaj, who
regularly publishes his caricatures in the Qatari-owned Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, has
drawn two cartoons on the subject of a possible Iranian attack.
In the first, an Iranian tank carries a gigantic
missile launcher, which only ends up ejecting a small drone carrying a
miniature rocket.
Hajjaj’s second cartoon, titled “Joint Arab
Deterrence,” references the regional coalition created on April 13 to intercept
many of the projectiles fired from Iran in its first direct attack on Israel.
The coalition is expected to be activated again in the event of a renewed
assault.
The cartoon shows two Arab men, wearing comical head
coverings, attempting to catch an Iranian missile with a fishing net as it
crosses over their territory towards Israel. This illustration criticizes Arab
regimes that defend Israel instead of joining Iran in its aggression, Bar
explained.
Jordan in particular came under fire for intercepting
dozens of drones launched by Iran toward Israel on the night of April 13,
surprising many Israelis with its support. The Hashemite Kingdom has been a
source of relentless criticism of Israel’s war against Hamas and has faced
intense domestic pressure to sever diplomatic relations with Jerusalem.
Cartoonist Hajjaj is known as a vociferous critic of
Israel, and his caricatures often carry antisemitic overtones, Bar pointed out.
Another frequent object of Hajjaj’s mockery is Arab
countries that have normalized relations with Israel. In August 2020, he was
arrested by Jordanian state security for a caricature satirizing UAE leader
Mohammed Bin Zayed after the signing of the Abraham Accords. Thanks to his
popularity and a public campaign for his release, however, Hajjaj was freed
after a few days.
Syrian-Kurdish cartoonist Yaser Ahmad also published
cartoons mocking Iranian indecisiveness. Ahmad, who works for the London-based
Al-Arab paper, is not known for being an extreme Israel-hater compared to many
of his Arab colleagues, Bar said.
In one of his latest cartoons, an Iranian leader is
depicted checking his pocket watch, with the caption, “The zero hour is broken,”
a play on words on the Arabic word sa’ah, which means both “hour” and “watch.”
In another drawing, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei
is about to light a firework rocket with a ridiculously long wick wrapped
around two coils, under the caption “The Iranian response,” indicating that it
may be a long time coming.
As for Hezbollah, the other regional actor that
threatens to strike Israel at an unspecified time in the future, Bar shared one
of her favorite cartoons.
The caricature from 2020 depicts Hezbollah leader
Hassan Nasrallah during one of his famed speeches, as he shouts into a shoe
turned upside down.
Showing someone the bottom of a shoe is considered
highly offensive in Arab and Muslim cultures, as evidenced by images of
anti-Israel protesters marching on the Israeli flag in various Middle Eastern
countries.
The caricature originated in Iraq and went viral among
the Iranian opposition, Bar said, as discontent has been growing in the Islamic
Republic over the regime’s waste of resources on its foreign proxies.

Ayatollah Khamenei Warns Of "Divine Wrath"
If Iran Backs Down Against Israel
by Samiran Mishra
August 15, 2024
Iran blames Israel for Ismail Haniyeh's death.
-------------
New Delhi: Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei has issued a warning against any form of retreat or compromise,
invoking the concept of "divine wrath". This comes in the wake of
growing tensions between Iran and Israel following the assassination of Ismail
Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, who was killed last month during an
official visit to Tehran.
Khamenei's remarks condemned what he described as
"enemy psychological warfare" aimed at pressuring Iran to reconsider
any plans for retaliation against Israel. The 86-year-old said that any
retreat, whether it be military, political, or economic, would invite severe
divine punishment.
Haniyeh's death, which Tehran attributes to Israeli
intelligence, has since placed Iran in a precarious position as it deliberates
over the timing and nature of its response.
"Governments that yield to the demands of today's
dominant powers, regardless of their nation's size or strength, can defy these
pressures if they draw on the strength of their people and accurately assess
their adversaries' true capabilities," Khamenei said, as quoted by Iran
International.
The Ayatollah also criticised the longstanding
tendency to exaggerate the power of enemies, citing historical examples of US,
British, and Israeli attempts to undermine Iran since the 1979 Islamic
Revolution.
Despite the heated rhetoric, Iran has refrained from
immediate retaliation, a move seen by some analysts as a strategic pause.
However, Iranian officials have dismissed Western calls for restraint, with the
Foreign Ministry criticising Western nations for their perceived double
standards. Iran has accused these nations of turning a blind eye to what he
described as Israel's "genocidal" actions in Gaza while expecting
Iran to forgo its right to retaliate for Haniyeh's killing.
Irann's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has publicly
aligned himself with Khamenei's hardline stance, although reports suggest he
may have privately expressed concerns about the potential fallout from further
escalation.
Israel has made it clear that any direct aggression
from Tehran will be met with a forceful response. Israeli officials have
reportedly warned both the US and European nations that an Iranian strike on
Israeli territory would trigger a swift and decisive Israeli retaliation.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan Launches Security Training For
London Mosques To Combat Hate
August 15, 2024

------------
Sadiq Khan has announced that a series of City
Hall-funded security training sessions will be provided for mosques across the
capital, as he declared London is “united against all forms of hate”.
The extra support for mosque leaders comes following
the recent scenes of violence and disorder across the country, which have
included targeted attacks against Muslims and ethnic minority communities.
According to City Hall, the four sessions have been
backed with £10,000 of mayoral funding and will provide practical advice on
protective security and safety processes, as well as advice on hate crime and
online safety.
The mayor today visited the first of those sessions at
Al Manaar, the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre in west London, to speak with
mosque leaders and provide reassurance. The session was led by Faith
Associates, a group of leading experts in mosque security, with representatives
from the Met Police also in attendance.
Mr Khan had been urged earlier this month to ensure
places of worship had extra security by Hina Bokhari, the London Assembly’s
Liberal Democrat group leader – who said many Muslims had become “extremely
worried” by the “unacceptable” spread of hate crimes.
The mayor said: “I’m proud that last week Londoners
sent a clear message that we are an open and welcoming city that is united
against all forms of hate.
“The peaceful shows of unity on our streets were
inspiring and comforting, however the violence and disorder that was seen
across the country has left many Londoners afraid. There is no room for
complacency. We can never stop being vigilant.
“I continue to work closely with the Government, the
Met and community leaders to ensure that Londoners feel safe, and are safe, and
through this new funding we will provide additional support and information to
help mosque leaders during this difficult time. This is on top of the increased
funding we’re already providing to places of worship in the capital. I want to
thank the Home Office for providing additional funding for protective security
for mosques.”
Tell MAMA, the organisation working to tackle
anti-Muslim hatred, told Reuters on Sunday, August 11, that it had received
more than 500 calls and online reports of anti-Muslim incidents from across the
UK since the start of the disorder two weeks ago.
Shaukat Warraich, managing director at Faith
Associates, said: “The recent disorder and Islamophobia observed around the
country has been shocking and has scared people.
“Faith Associates are experts in mosque security and
have delivered capacity-building work with mosques around the world. We have a
long history of working with the Mayor of London on helping to keep the Muslim
community in the capital safe, regularly partnering together since 2019.
“The new support provided to us by MOPAC [the Mayor’s
Office for Policing and Crime] will allow even more mosques to receive vital
safety and security advice which can be implemented immediately.”

Assam’s Future Not Secure, Hindu-Muslim Population
Balance Eroding: Assam CM Says Hoisting

Hoisting the Tri-Colour here, Sarma also said that the
indigenous people have gone in a defensive mode due to demographic change in
Assam as “we are a minority in 12-13 districts”.

Scholars, historians highlight the role of Muslims in
India’s freedom movement and shaping of modern India
By AnwarulhaqBaig
August 14, 2024
NEW DELHI: Various speakers at a seminar here on
Sunday said that the Muslim role in India’s independence and making of modern
India was being overlooked by most of the historians.
The seminar titled “Making of Modern India and Role of
Muslims in Freedom Movement” was part of a year-long campaign of the
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Delhi unit, to create awareness about the role
Muslims played in India’s struggle for freedom from Britishers.
In his inaugural speech, JIH Delhi state president
Salimullah Khan emphasizing the importance of compiling and presenting
historical facts from various sources across the country.
He expressed concern over the current trend of
rewriting history by omitting the Muslim contribution to serve vested
interests, which he believes, is creating misunderstandings and communal hatred
in the country.
“We are making efforts to collect historical facts,
heritage, and monument information that exists in Delhi and will present it to
the people,” Salimullah Khan stated.
He quoted Ayash Khan, former director of the renowned
Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library in Patna, who highlighted the discrepancy
between historical reality and its presentation by historians, often influenced
by personal interests and inclinations.
The JIH state chief also cited renowned Islamic
scholar Maulana Sadruddin Islahi, who emphasized the importance of genuine
history writing and deplored the modification of historical narratives to suit
personal agendas. He stressed that writing genuine history in the current
climate is a significant service to humanity.

Adverts promoting pilgrimage to one of Islam’s holiest
sites has been appearing under tweets on X from a far-right figure who
regularly makes anti-Islamic posts, i can reveal.
The Saudi government material for the “Pilgrim’s
Experience Programme” has appeared under tweets from Ashlea Simon, the
co-leader of the fascist organisation Britain First.
Earlier this month Simon called for “UK Muslims to be
deported” and described them as “s***bags”. Simon was banned from Twitter but
was reinstated by Elon Musk last year after he bought the platform in 2022.
Last week, Mr Musk promoted Simon’s tweet about a fake
story suggesting Keir Starmer was considering building emergency detainment
camps in the Falkland Islands with the claim “we’re all being deported to the
Falklands”. She did not respond to requests for comment.
The Pilgrim’s Experience Programme was launched in

travelling to Islam’s two holiest sites, including Mecca as part of the annual
Hajj.

Statement of the Prime Minister of the Islamic Emirate
on Asad 24; the Day of Victory
August 15, 2024
Asad 24 (August 15) – The Day of Victory is a
historically significant and proud day for the Islamic Ummah, and particularly
for the Afghan people. On this date, Allah (SWT) granted the Mujahid nation of
Afghanistan a decisive victory over an international arrogant and occupying
force (the U.S. and NATO). After twenty years of sacrifices, the Mujahidin
entered the capital of Afghanistan in a victorious manner. I extend my
heartfelt congratulations to the entire Mujahid nation and the Muslim Ummah on
this historic day of triumph over the Western occupiers. May Allah (SWT) accept
the sacrifices of all the martyrs, the sufferings of the wounded and
imprisoned, the hardships of the Mujahidin, and the hardships endured by the
public, and grant them rewards in the Hereafter. Ameen. The twenty-year jihad
stands as a proud chapter in the history of Islam, offering future generations
valuable lessons and inspiration for perseverance and resistance. The defeat of
the Americans in Afghanistan was indeed a triumph of faith and spirituality
over materialism. We observed a clear sign of divine support as Allah (SWT)
granted victory to the Afghan people, despite their limited resources and a
relatively small number of Mujahidin, against one of the most equipped and
advanced armies in the world. The Mujahidin, officials, and all our faithful
citizens must understand that the victory of jihad does not mark the end of our
responsibilities. We are now responsible to fortify the Islamic system, develop
our nation, protect the lives, property, and dignity of our fellow citizens,
and address the damages incurred from previous conflicts. We must fulfill these
duties with utmost sincerity and determination. We must make the most of this
significant opportunity bestowed upon us by Allah (SWT) To uphold the stability
of the Islamic system, maintain peace and stability, and promote both the
material and spiritual prosperity of the nation and its people, we must
leverage our capabilities. This will enable us to fulfill the aspirations of
the martyrs, widows, orphans, and disabled people who have sacrificed during
the twenty-year jihad. In conclusion, I once again congratulate you the Day of
Victory. I pray that Allah (SWT) keeps our country, people, and the entire
Islamic Ummah safe from calamities and exhaustion. May Allah (SWT) disgrace and
defeat the tyrannical invaders who attack innocent and powerless nations, just
as they were defeated and forced to flee from Afghanistan

The coalition’s investigative body said it vetted the

Iran’s mixed signals leave some allies in the dark and
set region on edge
by Tamara Qiblawi
August 14, 2024
CNN— The mood in Lebanon’s restive capital has
darkened in the two weeks since Israel’s July 30 attack in southern Beirut that
killed Iran-backed Hezbollah’s top commander Fu’ad Shukr and four civilians.
The city woke up the next morning to find that another
Iran-supported official, Hamas’ political leader Ismail Haniyeh, had been
killed in an assassination in the heart of the Iranian capital, Tehran.
“Do you think I am sitting in Hezbollah’s war room?”
said one exasperated political leader with ties to the powerful Beirut-based
armed group. “I have no idea what’s going to happen next. You probably know
more than I do.”

Foreign Ministry: Malaysia strongly condemns Aug 13
storming of Al-Aqsa mosque by Zionist Israeli extremists
15 Aug 2024
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 15 — The government of Malaysia
strongly condemns the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by Zionist Israeli
extremists on August 13.
The Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Wednesday,
said that this blatant act, carried out under the protection of Israeli
security forces, constitutes a severe violation of one of Islam’s holiest
sites.
“Malaysia is outraged by this deliberate provocation,
which denies Palestinian worshippers their right to access the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
It is also a provocation against Muslims worldwide,” it said.
This latest action, sanctioned by the Zionist Israeli
regime, marks the sixth violation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound since late
2022.

This act is deemed a repeated provocation against the

What's going on inside Iran as the world awaits
retaliation against Israel?
By Amin Khodadadi
Aug. 14, 2024
TEHRAN — As the world waits for Iran’s next step
abroad, the talk inside the Islamic Republic is not just of what a retaliatory
strike against Israel would mean for the Middle East, but what it would mean
for the country’s economy and freedoms.
NBC News spoke to several residents of Tehran as their
leaders rejected Western calls to refrain from an attack that the United States
has indicated could come this week.
“I am not the kind of person who agrees with war or
attacks at all,” said Omid, an IT specialist. “In this case, Iranian leaders
should consider that publicly attacking Israel to showcase military power could
have significant economic and political costs for Iran, especially given the
current chaotic economic situation,” said Omid, who did not want his last name
used out of fear of repercussions for speaking out.
There is no doubt that if Iran were to attack, Israel
would retaliate, he said, and no one can predict what might happen next. “If
Iranian leaders are determined to pursue retaliation, they should do so
covertly and without leaving evidence,” added Omid, 40.

'Keyboard warrior', 53, jailed over 'blow the mosque
up' Facebook post after Southport riots
By Jon Macpherson
15 AUG 2024
A "keyboard warrior" who lived a “quiet,
sheltered life” has been told by a judge that “even people like you need to go
prison” after she posted an online message stating: “Blow the mosque up with
the adults in it.”
Julie Sweeney, 53, was jailed on Wednesday (August 14)
for 15 months after she sent the comment to her local community Facebook group.
Sarah Badrawy, prosecuting, told the court one of the group’s 5,100 members
became “uneasy” at a number of comments posted on the site in the wake of
widespread violent disorder following the deaths of three young girls in
Southport on June 29.
Following the posting of a photograph which showed a
number of white and Asian people involved in the clean-up from the aftermath of
the Southport disorder, Sweeney posted: “It’s absolutely ridiculous. Don’t
protect the mosques. Blow the mosques up with the adults in it.”
Miss Badrawy said the concerned member found the post
“offensive” and “did not like reading it”. Police were alerted about the post which
had been deleted.

Islamic insurance sector in GCC region to expand by
15-20% in 2024: S&P
Jack Willard
15th August 2024
After witnessing strong topline growth across 2022 –
2023, Islamic and Takaful insurers based in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
region are continuing to benefit from favourable growth prospects, which is
mainly due to higher insurance demand in Saudi Arabia, says S&P Global Ratings.
s&p-logo-newIn a new report, S&P explained
that increasing competition and declining investment returns resulting from the
anticipated decrease in interest rates, and potentially more volatile capital
markets, could weigh on the industry’s earnings over the next 12-18 months.
S&P also noted, that although they expect the
effects of the Israel–Hamas war will remain contained to the region, the risk
of regional escalation however, is increasing.
“Although this is not our base case, a regional
escalation could impair business sentiment in the wider Middle East, including
the GCC region, reduce growth prospects, and impair GCC insurers’ investment
portfolios,” S&P said.

Karachi bathed in hues of green on 77th anniversary of
independence
Shazia Hasan
August 15, 2024
KARACHI: Celebrations for Pakistan’s 77 years of
independence started on the eve of August 14 as one could hear national songs
echoing in the air, someone or other was playing some inspiring song or the
other on a loudspeaker. That along with the many decorative green and white
lights tugged at the heartstrings.
The next morning as numerous Pakistan flags fluttered
in Karachi’s sea breeze, the day began with a 21-gun salute. Special prayers
were offered in mosques for the peace and prosperity of Pakistan.
Still, many celebrations throughout the day also led
to traffic havoc with the chaos reaching its climax in the evening when the
celebration along with a big concert started at Governor House.
All roads leading to Governor House were blocked
because of massive traffic jams despite the traffic police’s carrying out
special arrangements.

Police, PTI leaders clash in Lahore during
Independence Day rallies
Mansoor Malik
August 15, 2024
LAHORE: Police chase, clashes, arrests and release of
PTI workers marked the party’s Independence Day rallies, with PTI Punjab
General Secretary Hammad Azhar emerging on the scene after months.
Mr Azhar, who has been mostly in hiding since last
year’s May 9 violent protests, briefly emerged in the city before eluding
capture by Lahore police.
PTI Punjab parliamentarians, led by Opposition Leader
in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar staged a rally, with the
participants marching from the assembly gate to The Mall and up to GPO Chowk
and chanting slogans like “Pakistan Zindabad” and demanding the release of PTI
founder Imran Khan and other detained leaders.
Despite police efforts to block the rally,
participants managed to reach The Mall. As some workers distributed the
national and party flags, the police pounced on the workers, arresting more
than a dozen of them and tearing the clothes of two workers.
Mr Bhachar tried to stop police vehicles, but the
police sped away with the arrested workers. Later, the opposition leader, along
with several PTI MPAs, including Sardar Rashid Tufail, Awais Virk, Ali Imtiaz
Warraich, and others, staged a sit-in on The Mall, chanting, Zulm kay zabtay
hum nahinmaantay (We do not accept the oppression).
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhachar issued a stern
warning to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, criticising the heavy police
presence and the aggressive treatment of parliamentarians. “We are celebrating
Independence Day, yet we are treated like terrorists,” he remarked, adding that
PTI leaders and workers remain steadfast in their support for Imran Khan.

Heightened surveillance blamed for cyber slowdown
Jamal Shahid
August 15, 2024
ISLAMABAD: Amid growing concerns from the business
community, the internet service providers on Wednesday alleged that the
government’s heightened efforts to monitor internet traffic had resulted in a
significant nationwide slowdown of services.
A statement issued by the Wireless and Internet
Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) said the government’s decision
to enhance security and surveillance has had an unintended consequence,
severely crippling the country’s digital economy. “Over the past few weeks,
internet speeds have plummeted by 30 to 40 per cent, creating a chaotic
situation for businesses and individuals who rely heavily on fast, reliable
connectivity.”
The association said the impact had been particularly
devastating for call centres, e-commerce professionals, the online working
class, and those who manage electronic-related businesses.
“These sectors, which form the backbone of Pakistan’s
burgeoning digital economy, are now struggling to maintain operations, and the
slowdown is threatening their very survival,” it said, adding that the
situation had become so dire that many businesses were considering relocating
their operations to other countries where internet services remain stable.

A Chinese-Russian Fraud: Kazan’s “International Seminar
on Islamic Moderate Thought”
by Ma Wenyan
08/15/2024
Leaders of state-controlled Islam at the Kazan
seminar: China Islamic Association’s President Yang Faming presenting a gift to
RawilĞaynetdin, head of the Muslim Religious Administration of the Russian
Federation. From Weibo.
“International Seminar in Islamic Moderate Thought”
may look like a nice name, It is, in fact, a fraud. These events were created
by the China Islamic Association, i.e., the Chinese Communist Party’s body
controlling Chinese Muslims, in 2016.
The first seminar on “Islamic Moderate Through” was
held in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The purpose was abundantly clear: define “moderate
Muslims” as those subservient to the Russian and Chinese governments and
actively supporting the repression of “separatists,” be they the Uyghurs in
China or the Chechen not aligned with the Putin regime or other independent
Muslims in Russia. The events are dominated by Chinese bureaucrats of the China
Islamic Association and Russian “State Muftis” totally loyal to the Putin
administration.
On July 25, President Yang Faming of the China Islamic
Association headed a Chinese delegation to participate in the fifth such
“International Seminar on Islamic Moderate Thought” in Kazan, Tatarstan’s
capital in Russia. He gave a keynote speech titled “Vigorously Promote Islamic
Moderate Thought.” A key theme of his speech was advertising China’s Belt and
Road Initiative as a way of connecting countries with a significant Islamic
presence.

3 years of Kabul fall: Taliban want you to see 'other'
Afghanistan
Subham Tiwari
Aug 15, 2024
This 15th August, India’s Independence Day,
Afghanistan’s Islamist rulers are celebrating the third anniversary of
capturing the capital, Kabul, even as the world continues to boycott them. Now
the Taliban are testing a plan to mitigate their woes.
Afghanistan’s economy is struggling, infrastructure is
poor, and poverty is literally killing people in many parts. But the Taliban
won’t relent: public floggings and stoning are still happening, and women
remain barred from college and work.
However, they seem to be working on a new strategy to
divert attention: show the world another side of Afghanistan, a “beautiful”
Afghanistan. The hardliners have gone out of their way to attract tourists.
Two “very friendly” Taliban soldiers welcomed British
YouTuber Harry Jaggard at Kabul airport in late 2023. “I feel a lot safer in
Kabul, Afghanistan, than I felt in downtown California, America. It’s crazy,”
he says in a video.

Three years since fall of Afghanistan: Why India is
engaging with Taliban
ShashankMattoo
Aug 15, 2024
It has been three years since the fall of Kabul, the
capital of Afghanistan, to Taliban forces. Over this period, the region has
witnessed significant changes, including shifts in Afghanistan itself and
alterations in India’s policies towards both the Taliban and Afghanistan. In an
insightful discussion with India Today Global, Kabir Taneja, a senior fellow at
the Observer Research Foundation, provides an in-depth analysis of India’s
evolving stance on the Taliban and Afghanistan. He also sheds light on the
latest developments in the region and their implications.
Talking about the developments in Afghanistan in the
last three years under Taliban rule, Taneja says "They have just managed
to keep power in play for three years."
"That is also because the world has been
distracted by multiple other things, even regionally, there is no appetite for
Taliban taking any shape or form," he adds.

Hundreds of cases of femicide recorded in Afghanistan
since Taliban takeover are ‘tip of the iceberg’
Mark Townsend
15 Aug 2024
The 300-plus reported cases of Afghan women being
killed by men since the Taliban seized power are just “the tip of the iceberg”
when it comes to the true scale of gender-based violence in Afghanistan,
according to new data analysis.
Open-source investigators at the Centre of Information
Resilience’s Afghan Witness project combed through social media and news sites
to record 332 reported cases of femicide since the Taliban took Kabul on 15
August 2021.
The analysis, which is one of the first attempts to
try to collect data on the levels of sexual and physical violence against women
in Afghanistan, also found 840 women and girls had been subject to gender-based
violence from 1 January 2022 – when Afghan Witness began collating data – to 30
June this year, almost one a day.

Afghans are suffering. Don’t expect any tears from the
Taliban
Aug 14th 2024
THE STREETS of Kabul used to be riotously, almost
headache-inducingly colourful. There were billboards advertising Western wear
and Punjabi salwar kameez, murals promoting women’s and children’s rights, and
everywhere the black-red-green tricolour of the Afghan Republic. Since the
Taliban took over three years ago, a monochrome pall has settled on the city.
Old posters have been ripped away. Murals have been painted over. The austere
flag of the Afghan Emirate dominates, black text on a pure white field.
Black-and-white also describes Western countries’
approach to Afghanistan since their humiliating exit from the country on August
15th 2021. They have made any progress—sanctions relief, recognition of the
regime, a seat at the UN—conditional on restoring rights for women and girls,
who are barred from many areas of public life including secondary education.
The Taliban have only ratcheted up their restrictions. They refuse to
countenance negotiating over what they consider an internal matter.
Not that the West seems to think much about
Afghanistan at all. The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East are immediate
crises. Dealing with challenges posed by China’s rise is an ongoing focus,
while America’s election is all-consuming at home and watched nervously abroad.
Western leaders have nothing to gain from reminding voters of a 20-year-long
war that ended in abject defeat. President Joe Biden’s approval ratings
collapsed with the botched exit from Afghanistan. American “foreign policy has
been to keep it out of the headlines and keep it off the president’s desk,”
says Ashley Jackson of the Overseas Development Institute, a think-tank.
Afghanistan has not so much been forgotten as it is being wilfully ignored.

SRC’s US$1.1b suit: Najib would have picked ‘yes men’
if he wanted to be ‘puppet master’, not highly-qualified board members,
ex-director tells court
By Ida Lim
15 Aug 2024
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Former prime minister Datuk
Seri Najib Razak would have chosen “pakturut” or “yes men” to be SRC
International SdnBhd’s directors, if he had wanted to be their puppet master,
the company’s former director agreed today.
Tan Sri Ismee Ismail, a former SRC International
director, said this while testifying in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur as a
third party in the company’s US$1.18 billion lawsuit against Najib.
During cross-examination of Ismee, Najib’s lawyer Tan
Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah suggested: “Now, if Datuk Seri Najib wanted the
board to be the puppet and he the puppet master, he would not have chosen such
highly-qualified members of the board, who have their own brain, high
qualification. Is that a fair statement?”
Ismee agreed with Shafee that it was “fair” for Najib
to have expected the SRC International board of directors to work vigilantly in
the company’s interest as that is what the law requires.
Ismee agreed with Shafee’s suggestion that it was fair
for the then finance minister to expect the board to make decisions on matters
which he had to decide under the law as shareholder of the Finance
Ministry-owned company, and for Najib to then look at what the board decided.

Columbia University president resigns in wake of
campus protests over Gaza war
15 Aug, 2024
Columbia University President MinoucheShafik resigned
on Wednesday, nearly four months after the university's handling of campus
protests over Israel's war in Gaza drew criticism from pro-Israel and
pro-Palestinian sides alike.
Shafik, who cited the toll the campus turmoil took on
her family, becomes the third president of an Ivy League university to step
down in the wake of campus protests over Gaza.
She said she made the announcement now so new
leadership could be in place before the new term begins on September 3, when
student protesters have vowed to resume protests.
"It has... been a period of turmoil where it has
been difficult to overcome divergent views across our community. This period
has taken a considerable toll on my family, as it has for others in our
community," Shafik said in a statement.

Iran escalates cyber efforts against US election amid
growing tensions
Aug 15, 2024
With less than three months until the US election,
Iran's cyber activities are intensifying, US officials and cybersecurity
experts report. The suspected hack of Donald Trump’s campaign is the latest in
a series of aggressive actions attributed to Tehran.
Iran, often labeled a “chaos agent” in cyber
conflicts, has ramped up efforts to influence US politics. Recent activities
include encouraging protests over Israel’s Gaza conflict, impersonating
American activists, and creating fake news networks. Despite Russia and China
being significant cyber threats, Iran’s heightened aggression signals a new
level of interference aimed at disrupting the election.
Sean Minor, a former US Army information warfare
expert, notes the increase in cyber operations as the election approaches.
"As we get closer, we suspect these networks will get more
aggressive," he said, as quoted by AP.The FBI is probing the Trump
campaign hack and similar efforts targeting President Joe Biden’s campaign.
Trump’s team reported unauthorized access to internal documents, later leaked
to the media. While Trump dismissed the leaked material’s importance, the
campaign has pointed to Iran, citing a Microsoft report on attempted hacks by
Iranian military intelligence.

'Start writing that way': Biden demands media praise,
critics accuse US president of manipulating coverage
Aug 15, 2024
US President Joe Biden during a recent briefing
instructed the media, “Start writing that way, okay? My policies are working”,
as he downplayed his lackluster debate performance against former President
Donald Trump. The President described his performance as a "bad
night" on July 5, attributing it to exhaustion and inadequate preparation.
He admitted to George Stephanopoulos of ABC News that he had a "bad
episode" and regretted not preparing better.
Biden's directive to the media has ignited
controversy, with critics accusing him of trying to manipulate media coverage.
Many have mocked his attempt to control the narrative, with some viewing it as
a move that undermines press freedom.
Comments on social media have ranged from concerns
about Biden’s perceived dictatorial tendencies to questions about his attitude
towards internal party issues.
During the same briefing, Biden restricted the scope
of questions, saying, "Any of the — any of the non-press — you’re in the
non-press — want to ask me a question. You can ask me. I might — may not answer
it. I’d like to stay on topic. I don’t want to get into talking about what’s
going on in foreign policy and the like right now."

Biden 'most angry' with Nancy Pelosi, hasn't spoken
yet; 'frustrated' with Obama
Aug 15, 2024
Weeks after exiting the race that he was adamant to
keep on fighting, US president Joe Biden is still coming to terms with what
happened behind his back -- 'engineered' mainly by Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi
and Chuck Schumer. But his feelings for the three of them are different,
Politico reported citing Biden's close aides. Biden is angry with Nancy Pelosi,
frustrated with Barack Obama and miffed at Schumer.
The tension is again at the forefront as the party is
preparing for the national convention. Biden told his close aides that he
respects Pelosi for she did what she had to do and that Pelosi cares for the
party and not feelings but she was ruthless to set aside their long-term
relationships. Pelosi and Biden have not spoken after Biden's exit and Pelosi
also acknowledged in a recent interview that she loses sleep thinking about her
friendship with Biden.
Pelosi has repeatedly denied any role in Biden's exit
and said she didn’t call anyone but the president in the three weeks prior to
Biden’s departure from the race. But Pelosi took calls from rank-and-file
Democrats who sought her advice in the days following Biden’s debate
performance and before he dropped out of the race, Politico reported.
Pelosi said she, her husband and children have only
love for the Bidens. “In our family, we have three generations of love for Joe
Biden. My husband and I — of course, we’ve known him for a very long time —
respect him, love him and Jill. He and Jill are so remarkable, and their
family. Our kids have always loved them. I had pictures with him from our
children growing up and now our grandchildren growing up,” she said.
Biden's resentment for Obama stemmed from the fact
that Obama tweeted in support of Biden after the debate and then went quiet.
Obama did not ask him to his face to leave the race and that made Biden sad.
