RSS
Chief Mohan Bhagwat Repeats Hindu-Muslim ‘Bhai-Bhai’ Pitch, Says Only Pattern
Of Worship Is Different
SHANKER
ARNIMESH
12
October, 2021
New
Delhi: RSS Sarasanghachalak Mohan Bhagwat Tuesday said Hindus and Muslims have
the same ancestors, and described them as “brothers”, invoking a pitch he has
often made in recent weeks amid apprehensions about growing polarisation in
India under the BJP-led central government.
“Ancestors
of Hindus and Muslims are the same. We all are brothers, living in the same
country. Our civilisation is one, only our pattern of worship is different,” he
said.
“We
can’t discriminate on the basis of patterns of worship. Those who belong to
India, their security is our responsibility.”
Bhagwat
was speaking at the launch of ‘Veer Savarkar: The man who could have prevented
Partition’, a book by information commissioner and former journalist Uday
Mahurkar.
Union
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also attended the event.
Bhagwat
said “Savarkar’s Hindutva was not different from Vivekananda’s”.
“It
was not against Muslims. Our culture is liberal, our culture is Hindutva,
nobody becomes separate due to their way of worshipping. Our (Hindus’ and
Muslims’) ancestors are one. If this thought process had persisted at the time
of the freedom movement, there would have been a way to stop Partition,”
Bhagwat added.
Quoting
Chhatrapati Shivaji, the 17th-century Maratha emperor, Bhagwat said he always
stated that one God has given birth to Hindus and Muslims, and there should be
no ambiguity about this.
“There
is no such thing as minority and majority, which the Kerala governor recently
said at a function. Hindus and Muslims share the same civilisation, which is
our culture. Muslims are our brothers,” he added, referring to statements made
by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan last week.
Khan
said he disapproved of the binary of “majority-minority” in India as all
citizens enjoy “equal rights”.
Bhagwat
also referred to the RSS’ dreams of an “Akhand Bharat” — an India that includes
Pakistan and Bangladesh — saying the “dream of a united India will happen”.
“It
is necessary for the world also. Nobody who separated from India is happy.
Lohia’s dream was also united India. Our dream should be to make an adarsh
(ideal) brotherhood society in India,” he said.
‘Gandhi,
Savarkar respected each other’
Echoing
Mahurkar, he said roads should not be named after those Muslim kings who
invaded India and “were against our civilisation”.
“Akbar
is good but not Aurangzeb. There are so many good examples, from Dara Shikoh to
Ashfaqullah Khan (freedom fighter), they should be honoured.
“We
always say appeasement of none should be our mantra. It was propagated by
Savarkar also.”
Bhagwat
said “there was a difference of opinion between Gandhi and Savarkar on many
issues but both respected each other”.
“Both
cared for the other’s sentiments. It was a few people who tried to create
differences between them.”
Rajnath
Singh said there was an effort by “Marxist historians” to “defame Savarkar”.
“Some
people call him fascist and Nazi, but he was a great nationalist and freedom
fighter. On Gandhi’s instruction, he filed a mercy petition, which was the
right of every prisoner, but to defame him, it is used as a weapon,” he added,
apparently referring to Opposition claims about Savarkar’s alleged apology
letter to the British.
“It
is not pardonable,” he said. “He was one of India’s finest security
strategists. He raised the alarm about several challenges, which emerged true
in due course of time.”

Islamic
State Khorasan Province Threatens the Authority of the Taliban Government;
Taliban Struggling With New ‘Counterinsurgent’ Role
Oct
12, 2021

Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan last week. (Image: AFP)
-----
Afghanistan’s
stability rests on a knife's edge as a series of bloody attacks launched by
Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) threatens the authority of the new
Taliban government.
A
regional affiliate of the Islamic State group, the ISIS-K has become more
brazen in its attacks after US troops pulled out in August. Over the past few
weeks, it has killed hundreds of locals, Taliban fighters and Shiite Muslims in
a bid to sow sectarian hatred and make the country ungovernable.
Under
mounting pressure from the international community to stop such extremist
groups, the Afghan government has launched several operations against the
ISIS-K.
However,
the Taliban, which was an effective insurgent force during the US occupation of
the country, is struggling with its new role — that of counterinsurgent.
US
chairman of the joint chiefs General Mark Milley has said there is "a real
possibility" that ISIS could formally reconstitute in Afghanistan in the
next six to 36 months if decisive action is not taken immediately.
'Will
not work with US'
Taliban
authorities, however, said ISIS-K poses no threat to the country and was at
most a ‘headache’ that they can deal with internally, while ruling out any
cooperation with the United States to contain such extremist outfits. “We can
tackle Daesh [ISIS] independently,” Taliban political spokesman Suhail Shaheen
told the Associated Press.
In
the first face-to-face meeting between US and Taliban officials in Doha on
October 11, the Afghan delegation skirted concerns over law and order while
asking the US to end economic sanctions and to “unfreeze” assets worth $10bn.
However, any substantial financial assistance is reliant on international
recognition, which in turn is dependent on the Taliban regime introducing
inclusive policies, and reining in militant groups.
This
leaves the Taliban with little option but to take on the ISIS-K, which is
considered extremist even by hard-right groups.
Haqqani
network
Experts
say that with the Taliban now “seemingly implementing some moderate reforms”,
the ISIS-K is likely to capitalise on its position as the main rejectionist
group in Afghanistan to recruit more disaffected former Taliban supporters and
to mount more attacks.
The
Taliban, however, know their enemy and the terrain. They also have the
potential support of two groups that also know the tactics of ISIS-K very well.
As
a report from the US-based Soufan Centre explained: "To combat ISIS-K, the
Taliban is going to rely on the powerful Haqqani network, Al-Qaeda, and other
violent non-state actors for manpower, combat expertise, and logistical
support."
To
stand any chance at succeeding, the Taliban is going to have to clamp down on
internal divisions and mollify members within the organization that believe the
group is being either too militant, or not militant enough.
Taliban,
ISIS-K at odds
The
Taliban and ISIS-K are both Sunni militant groups but, while the new
Taliban-led regime in Kabul has promised to protect the minority Shiites, its
rival wants to foment sectarian war.
Many
of the fighters in ISIS-K fought for the Taliban or allied groups, or come from
insurgent movements inspired by Al-Qaeda. But now the groups' strategies have
diverged.
The
Taliban of 2021 has the goal of ruling Afghanistan under its interpretation of
Islamic law, whereas ISIS-K is still wedded to the distant goal of a global
"caliphate".
Taliban
spokesmen brand the group "takfiri" - Muslims who take it upon
themselves to brand others apostates and thus condemn them to death - while
ISIS-K propaganda paints their rivals as sell-outs to the Americans and the
Chinese. ISIS-K, which was formed in late 2014, considers Taliban militants
“apostates”, making their killing lawful under their interpretation of Islamic
law.
New
leadership
Since
2020, the ISIS-K has been reputedly led by one ‘Shahab al-Mujahir’. He is
variously rumoured to have been an Al-Qaeda commander or a former member of the
Haqqani network, now one of the most powerful and feared factions in the Afghan
Taliban.
Up
until last year, overshadowed by the Taliban and targeted by a campaign of US
air and drone strikes, the ISIS-K faction was losing influence.
But
the arrival of the mysterious new leader seems to have marked a change in its
fortunes. There is a renewed emphasis on urban warfare and symbolic violence.
It allegedly carried out twin bombings at the Afghanistan airport in August
that killed over 150 locals and 13 American soldiers. On October 8, an ISIS-K
suicide bomber slaughtered 46 Shiite Muslims during Friday prayers.
ISIS-K
also chooses soft targets and has been blamed for some of the worst atrocities
in recent years, targeting girls' schools, hospitals, and even a maternity
ward. In March last year, the ISIS-K had attacked a Gurdwara, killing 25 Sikhs
and several Afghans.

Saudi
Showcases Culture and History through Dance, Music Performances to a Global
Audience at Expo 2020 Dubai
13
October,2021
Saudi
Arabia’s diverse regions and folklore are being represented by vibrant dance
and musical performances at Expo 2020 Dubai.
The
Saudi Signature Performance Group is presenting unique displays of amazing
costumes and beautiful music, songs, and chants at the Saudi Pavilion that are
set to showcase the country’s history and culture to a global audience at Expo
2020 Dubai.
Throughout
the day, the Saudi Signature Performance Group presents four different dances,
called Ardah, from various parts of the Kingdom. Men line up in two rows facing
each other or in a circle while they each carry a sword. They are also
accompanied by drums and sometimes by a singer or poet.
The
group starts the day with the Ardah Al-Najdiyah, which has its roots in the
country’s central area called Najd and is considered to be Saudi Arabia’s national
dance.
The
second performance is of the Al Khubaiti dance, especially prevalent in the
city of Jeddah and includes distinctive turns and drops by the dancers.
For
their third display, the dancers showcase the Al Liwa dance, inspired by
African dances that were able to influence the Arabian peninsula through Oman.
The
Al Azzawi dance is the fourth dance to be performed and is the most popular
dance in Jizan, which is located in the country’s southwest corner directly
north of the border of Yemen. It is often performed by young men because it
requires a lot of jumping.
The
group ends the night with another performance of the Ardah Al-Najdiyah. The
performances take place nightly at the Saudi Arabia Pavilion, located in the
Opportunity District, at 7pm, 7.40pm, 8.20pm, 9pm and 9.40pm.
The
Saudi Arabia Guiness World Record-breaking pavilion offers a glimpse into the
future, taking visitors on a journey through the country’s ambitions across
four main pillars: people, nature, heritage and opportunities.
It
is second largest pavilion, after the United Arab Emirates, at Expo 2020 Dubai
with a total area of 13,059 square meters.
The
pavilion promotes the business opportunities presented by the Kingdom’s rapid
modernization under the Vision 2030 plan.
It
also includes displays championing Saudi Arabia’s culture, nature, and historic
tourist attractions including the ancient city of AlUla.
The
pavilion offers visitors a glimpse of some of Saudi Arabia’s five UNESCO world
heritage sites.

US
rights group call out Facebook on 'anti-Muslim hate' content
12
October, 2021
After
the congressional testimony by Facebook whistle-blower Frances Haugen about hate
speech on the platform, a Muslim rights group in the US is calling for greater
accountability of the social media giant.
Facebook
has come under fire for allegations that it has done little to stop the spread
of hate speech on its platform.
Haugen
previously warned that hate content on Facebook is fanning violence in
countries such as Myanmar, where ethnic cleansing against Rohingya Muslims has
taken place.
US
rights groups have also called out Facebook for the continued presence of
anti-Muslim content on the site.
"It's
very clear Facebook has played a very complicit role," Huzaifa Shahbaz, a
research and advocacy coordinator at the Council on American-Islamic Relations
(CAIR), told The New Arab. "Even after sustained pressure, anti-Muslim
hate has continued."
CAIR
is one of several civil rights organisations that have spoken out about what it
says is insufficient action on the part of Facebook in addressing anti-Muslim
hate speech, events, and forums.
In
a press release earlier this month, it pointed to dehumanising language
referring to Muslims in India on Facebook, which was followed by violence
against them by extremists in the country.
Such
content is also widely shared on WhatsApp and Instagram, both owned by
Facebook.
A
2019 Southern Poverty Law Firm investigation found that a closed Facebook group
was used to organise the surveillance of mosques in southern and western US
states.
In
April, the civil rights group Muslim Advocates filed a lawsuit against Facebook
alleging that the company had falsely promised that when they learn of content
that violates their own standards or policies, that content is removed.
Facebook
has defended its continued hosting of content deemed harmful by invoking free
speech and saying that it is difficult to monitor all content in multiple
languages.
Huzaifa,
however, noted that other social media companies have taken more concrete steps
to address hate speech on their platforms.
Twitter,
YouTube, and Reddit have all taken action against users spreading hate and
conspiracy theories.
"It's
a really simple thing to do - just having a team to vet these groups,"
says Shahbaz.

Cops
foil Delhi terror plan: How Ashraf Ali was indoctrinated by ISI ‘talent
spotter’ in Pakistan
Oct
13, 2021
NEW
DELHI: In the winter of 2001, a “talent spotter” for the Pakistani spy agency
ISI laid his eyes on a teenager named Ashraf Ali, who lived in village Kotli
Sidhwan in Narowal district. The Class X passout was deemed “vulnerable” by the
spotter, code-named Zafar, because Ali’s parents had died within a few months
of each other leaving him and his two brothers to fend for themselves and also
look after their three sisters.
Ali’s
father, Umardeen, a shoe factory worker in Lahore, had barely left anything behind.
The family was pleasantly surprised when they started receiving financial aid
from an unknown entity. For the next two years, they got money regularly even
as Ali and his brothers, Farooq and Saleem, worked to get things back on track.
All
this while, Ali was being motivated and radicalised to join jihad and was
eventually convinced to work for ISI. Towards the end of 2003, Ali was taken to
a camp and trained in weaponry and literature under his handler, code-named
Nasir. The boy was finally “ready” in the spring of 2004, after which he was
flown to Dhaka with the other recruits.
According
to Delhi Police, Ali was first kept in Mirpur and then smuggled into India via
Siliguri in West Bengal. He had no weapons or explosives on him and was given
instructions to lie low. For a few weeks, he remained in Kolkata, after which
he left for Ajmer. He was briefed about various Indian cities, routes and
espionage techniques to facilitate his stay, he revealed during the
interrogation.
“At
Ajmer, Ali befriended a maulvi at a local mosque and stayed there for two
years. In 2006, he accompanied the maulvi to Delhi and started tilawat (prayer
job) in factories in the Walled City. He met other relatives of the maulvi and
won their trust. He then started receiving money from his ISI handler Nasir by
Western Union Money Transfer through the IDs of the maulvi’s relatives,” said
DCP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha.
In
north Delhi, he got identity cards made with the help of the owner of his
rented room. “He lived there for six months. My father got his Aadhaar Card
made for documentation. After he left, we lost touch with him. If needed, we
will cooperate with the police,” said Uzaib, Ali’s former landlord’s son.
The
neighbours could not recall noticing any unusual activities. “He lived in lane
number 4 of Aram Park 15 years ago. He said he worked at a shop in Laxmi Nagar.
He had rented the room for about seven months. He went to work in the morning
and returned late,” said a local resident.
In
2007, Ali shifted to Ghaziabad where he got married to a woman named Badurnissa
who lived in a JJ cluster in Vaishali. However, this marriage was a sham as Ali
wanted to get a ration card made using the marriage documents. He deserted the
woman in 4-5 months and moved to Katihar, Bihar. There, he got a certificate of
residence made by a village pradhan. Using these documents, he got a passport.

BJP
Workers Asked To Get At Least 30 Minority Votes From Each Muslim-Dominated
Booth In UP
Oct
12, 2021
LUCKNOW:
With prominent non-BJP parties propping up the symbols of Hindutva in their
poll pitch, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has silently launched a campaign
to woo minority voters.
Unlike
previous elections, the BJP workers have been given the target of ensuring
support for the party from minority-dominated booths.
According
to party functionaries, the move is different from previous elections when it
remained limited to mere lip service. Party workers up to booth level have been
assigned specific targets this time around.
As
per a rough estimate, out of over 1.63 lakh booths, approximately 50,000 are
the ones where minority votes swing results.
The
presidents of these booths and senior BJP minority cell members have been asked
to convince at least 15 voters each from their respective booths to support BJP
candidates.
Sources
told TOI that the directives have been issued by the secretary of UP BJP
organization, Sunil Bansal. UP BJP minority cell president Basit Ali, however,
claimed that the target to get at least 100 minority votes from each booth has
been set this time.
“Nearly
30% of the beneficiaries of various schemes, including free ration distribution
and houses for all, are from the minority community. The idea is to tap support
from these beneficiaries through various outreach programmes,” Ali said.
He
added that programmes would also be organised to win over intellectuals among
Muslims and other minority communities.
A
BJP leader said earlier the UP BJP minority cell did not have members till
booth-level but this time the party has minority cell structure at the grass
roots. Of the 50,000 booths identified to be minority-dominated, only
7,000-8,000 booths are yet to be constituted while the remaining have been
formed and verified.

BJP
Muslim Face, Akbar and Nazir, Quits Party Role After Kerala Reshuffle
By
Shaju Philip
October
13, 2021
Indicating
growing discontent within the BJP’s state unit after the reshuffle last week,
filmmaker-turned party leader Ali Akbar Tuesday quit the party state committee
– his decision to resign from “all organisational responsibilities” came close
on the suspension of senior party leader A K Nazir.
Meanwhile,
BJP minority Morcha state committee member Syed Thaha Bafaky Thangal resigned
from the party and its affiliated organisations, saying that the saffron party
was insulting the entire Muslim community.
Akbar
and Nazir were the Muslim faces of BJP in north Kerala, where the community has
a significant presence. Nazer was suspended from the party last week after he
said the party was collapsing in the state under the present leadership and
that elections are only a means of raising funds for the BJP in Kerala.
Akbar
said he would continue as an ordinary BJP worker. However, he objected to the
sidelining of Nazir, saying he is a Muslim who joined the BJP much before the
present crowd. “He is not like me who joined the party five or six years back.
He has a long tradition…I can’t speak about Nazir while being a member of the
party’s state committee. I am not part of any group in BJP,’’ said Akbar. Akbar
justified his decision to quit all the posts in the BJP saying he was not
talking for himself but for the Muslims who got the “Sanghi title” years ago.

Hell
is waiting for them: Farooq Abdullah on terrorists killing J&K civilians
October
12, 2021
India
Today TV Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai spoke to National Conference leader
and former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah over the spate of violence that Kashmir
is facing.
Farooq
Abdullah said even radical Islam must know that Islam doesn’t permit killing
innocents. These people are doing wrong, for which hell is waiting for them, he
added. Excerpts:
Q:
Is this a return of the cycle of violence in Kashmir?
We
have been thinking of this for a long time. The minute the abrogation of
Article 370 took place, we were expecting that things would not get better,
they would certainly get worse, and they have got worse.
Q:
With seven targeted killings, the fear is we could go back to 1990
If
you remember, it’s not just seven killings. There have been 28 killings, out of
which 21 are Muslims. So, this has been continuing for some time. It’s only now
that people are waking up when non-Muslims have also been targeted.
Q:
You’re not linking it to the abrogation of Article 370. Why not first
unqualifiedly condemn the violence?
Don’t
you think the government has been saying from the first day that demonetisation
and the removal of Article 370 are bringing peace to the state? Don’t you see
that? I never said that; they said it. They said what was happening before
would not happen. So, why don’t you remember that? They were saying there is
peace and peace and peace. Is there peace?
Q:
Can we at least have a stronger reaction? Why don’t all politicians come
together and speak in one voice? Is Kashmiriyat simply on paper?
I
don’t know about one voice. But we have spoken, and we have spoken very firmly.
I was the first man to go to Bindroo’s house; I had tears in my eyes because
the man was good. He never moved from Kashmir in the last 30 years. In the
1990s, when things were bad, Bindroo never left. Bindroo stayed. Even when he
was asked to leave, he said no, this is my home.
Q:
Mr Bindroo was a symbol of Kashmiriyat. So when he is gunned down, where does
it leave the whole notion of Kashmiriyat? Should the recruitment of young
Kashmiris as terrorists worry you?
Don’t
you see what’s happening in the rest of the country? How Muslims are being
targeted? Don’t you think that influence will be on our young people here? When
they have no jobs, and 50,000 jobs were promised. What do you think they will
do? When you see Muslim officers undermined, and everybody is brought from
outside, how do you think they will feel?
Q:
I’m sorry to say, but that cannot be an explanation for violence. You cannot be
seen to rationalise violence. Violence against innocent civilians is
unacceptable. We cannot go down to the roots theory. That’s unacceptable.
We
don’t welcome this damn thing that’s happened. We think it’s a terrible thing
that’s happened. None of us thinks this is right. This is the worst thing that
can happen. Even radical Islam must know that Islam doesn’t permit killing
innocents. It’s very clear in Islam. These people are doing wrong, for which
the hell is waiting for them.
ALSO
READ: Security forces gun down 5 terrorists in two back-to-back encounters
J&K's Shopian
Q:
Do you see the light at the end of what seems to be a dark tunnel?
There
will always be a bright light at the end of the tunnel. We all have to work for
it. The government of India has to work for it. We, the majority community of
the state, have to work for it. It’s on us that this must not happen.
Q:
How will Kashmiri civil society and politicians come together to defeat the
gun?
What
the Prime Minister said Dil se doori, Delhi se doori. It’s for the government
of India to remove that doori. That distance has to be shortened. No one here
wants these killings of innocents. Not a single soul.
Q:
Why don’t people speak more strongly? Is it fear?
Everybody
has spoken strongly. Tell me of one person who has not spoken strongly.

Muslim
outfit gifts new clothes to villagers in Bankura
Snehamoy
Chakraborty
12.10.21
A
group of Muslim youths at remote Lodda village in Bankura district on Sunday
gifted new clothes to around 400 poor Hindu families after they held a survey
on how many villagers could not buy any for Bengal’s biggest festival.
The
20 youths, mostly farmers and small traders, held a meeting a fortnight ago to
survey how many among the Hindu community in their locality needed new clothes.
“Most
of the Hindu families in our area are poor. We visited the homes to see if they
were able to buy new clothes for their family members. Many could not. So we
took details like age and gender of the family members, including children, as
these were important before purchasing dresses. We distributed the clothes on
Sunday,” said Sheikh Bapi, a member of the Lodda Muslim Yuva Sampradai that
organised this event.
On
Sunday, during a cultural programme at the village grounds, the members handed over new clothes to those
who had enlisted their names.
“We
believe in amity and here both Hindus and Muslims live like brothers. We
also
celebrate our festivals together. For us, religion is a personal affair but
festivity is for all,” said Sheikh Mojammel, a member.
The
youths said that to buy the new clothes they pooled their own money and from
other philanthropic villagers to raise Rs 1 lakh. With this, they brought new
clothes for the 400 families, including around 50 children and 200 women.
Bablu
Bauri, whose elderly parents, wife and child received new clothes from the
Lodda Muslim Yuva Sampradai, said he was in deep financial crisis and was in no
position to buy clothes.
“I
am a daily wage earner and used to work as a mason’s helper here. I have not
been earning regularly since the pandemic started. I had no money to buy new
clothes for my family during Durga Puja this year,” Bablu said, thanking
organisers for the gesture.
Lodda
is a village in Khalagram gram panchayat in Taldangra block area of Bankura.
The village is the only one in the area with a sizeable Muslim population. The
village has around 400 Muslim families, most relatively better-off.

VHP
and Bajrang Dal activists allege ‘love jihad’ at Indore Garba
Oct
12, 2021
INDORE:
Saffron activists barged into a Garba event in Indore on Sunday night and
accused the organisers of promoting ‘love-jihad’ by allowing non-Hindus to
participate. In Ratlam district, they put up posters banning the entry of
non-Hindus.
Indore’s
Gandhi Nagar police booked four youths of a minority community under Section
151 CrPC, and the organizers of the Garba at Oxford College for violating the
collector’s Covid-safety directives.
The
Garba was on when Bajrang Dal and VHP workers entered the college on Sunday
night and accused the organisers of “allowing non-Hindus to take part in the
event”.
Bajrang
Dal Indore convener Tannu Sharma told TOI, “We had received a tip that the
directors of Oxford College were organizing a commercial ‘Garba’ on Sunday and
were selling passes, which is banned by the administration under Covid-19
guidelines. The event was also being used to promote ‘love jihad’ as entry was
given to thousands of Muslim youngsters.”
He
said four youths caught by them were found to be “non-Hindus and their
identities were verified through their Aadhar cards”. The saffron activists
handed them to police.
Sharma
alleged that thousands of people were taking part in the event although the
local SDM had given permission for 800.
Around
10pm, senior police officers went to the Garba venue and shut down the event.
Gandhi Nagar police, on the complaint of one Tarun Devda, lodged an FIR against
Akshay Tiwari, director of Oxford College, under section 188 IPC. “We have also
registered a case against four persons for violating section 151 CrPC for
disturbing peace,” TI Santosh Yadav told TOI, adding that no one has been
arrested. Tiwari could not be contacted for his comments.
VHP
puts up posters outside Garba pandals ‘banning’ non-Hindus
The
incident reminds of the 2014 statement of senior BJP leader Usha Thakur,
warning Garba organizers not to allow non-Hindus and asking them to screen
participants on the basis of their voter cards.
Thakur
is now minister for culture and tourism. She could not be contacted for her
reaction to Sunday’s incident.
A
few hours later, VHP workers put up posters outside Garba pandals in Ratlam
district, ‘banning’ non-Hindus.

Poverty
Leading To Child Marriages in Afghanistan In Exchange For Weapons
Oct
12, 2021
NEW
DELHI: Poverty, unemployment and severe economic problems in Ghur province of
Afghanistan have led to child marriages, and a number of families are letting
their underage girls marry middle-aged men in exchange for money, weapons or
livestock, Raha Press reported. Some shocking stories have come to light where
families have sold their one-year-old daughters for money, livestock and
weapons, the report said.
The
buying and selling rate of an underage girl is usually between 100,000 and
250,000 Afghanis in the province.
According
to sources, if the buyer does not have cash, he will give the girl's family
weapons or livestock in return.
According
to the report, such incidents occur more in the remote districts of the
province than in the national capital.
Buying
and selling of girls or child marriage in exchange for money were common
before, but after the fall of the Afghanistan government and the ensuing
economic turmoil, more families are forced to take this route.
Habiba
Jamshidi, a women's rights activist in the west of the country, said women form
half of the society's population and they should not be treated inhumanely or

Shia
cleric Sadr issues warnings against interference in forming Iraq government
October
12, 2021
After
winning the largest number of seats in this weekend's early parliamentary
elections, Shia Iraqi cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr warned against external
interference in the formation of the new government, Anadolu reported
yesterday.
Sadr's
bloc won 73 seats in the 329-member parliament, according to initial results,
followed by the Taqaddoum bloc of Parliament Speaker Mohamed Al-Halbousi with
38 seats and the State of Law bloc led by former Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki
came with 37 seats.
Al-Sadr
sent a message of reassurance to the US Embassy in Baghdad, saying: "All
embassies are welcome unless they interfere in Iraqi affairs and the formation
of the government." The US embassy in Baghdad has been subjected to
repeated rocket attacks for months and Washington holds Shia armed factions
close to Tehran responsible for these attacks.
According
to Anadolu, Al-Sadr warned that "any intervention will have a diplomatic
response, and perhaps a popular one. Iraq is for the Iraqis only, and we will
not allow the intervention at all."
"Weapons
must be confined to the hands of the state and the use of weapons outside this
scope is prohibited. It is time for the people to live in peace, without
occupation or terrorism."

Shia
armed factions reject Iraq vote results

12.10.2021
BAGHDAD
A
coalition of Shia political forces and armed factions in Iraq has rejected the
preliminary results of this week’s early parliamentary elections in Iraq.
In
a statement, the Coordination Framework, an alliance of political forces and
factions of the Hashd al-Shaabi, said it has raised “technical observations”
about the vote, accusing the electoral commission of announcing the results
without addressing these concerns.
“(Therefore),
we announce our rejection of the vote results,” the alliance said, vowing to
pursue all “available measures to prevent voter tampering.
Initial
results announced Monday showed a marked decline of the Al-Fatah coalition –
affiliated with the Hashd al-Shaabi – which won only 14 seats in the 329-member
parliament, compared to 48 seats it secured in the 2018 elections.
Meanwhile,
Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s party won 73 seats, the highest, followed by
Taqaddum (progress) bloc of Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi with 38
seats. The State of Law bloc led by former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki came
third with 37 seats.
Sunday’s
elections saw 3,249 candidates representing 21 coalitions and 109 parties vying
for seats in the assembly. The polls saw a low turnout of only 41%, according

Turkish
intelligence helped Iraq capture ISIS leader: Reuters sources
12
October ,2021
Turkish
intelligence helped Iraq capture a senior ISIS leader who had been hiding out
in northwestern Syria, three security sources said on Tuesday, in an operation
that points to closer cooperation against remnants of the extremist group.
Iraq
announced on Monday that its security forces had captured Sami Jasim, an Iraqi
national, in what it described as “a special operation outside the borders”. It
did not give details on when or where he was seized.
Jasim
is one of the most senior ISIS leaders to be taken alive. He was a deputy to
ISIS's founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, killed during a US raid in 2019 in Syria's
northwest, and a close aide to its current leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi
al-Quraishi, the Iraqi government said.
A
senior regional security source and two Iraqi security sources told Reuters
that Jasim had been in northwestern Syria and that Turkish intelligence had
been key to his capture. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because
they were discussing covert operations.
Officials
in the Iraqi and Turkish governments declined to comment on the sources'
accounts of Jasim's capture.
Closer
cooperation between Iraq, from where many ISIS leaders came, and Turkey, which
has influence in northern Syria, could help tighten the noose on remnants of
the extremist group, even after the US military has reduced its presence in the
region.
Northwestern
Syria is the last major bastion of insurgents who have been fighting Damascus.
Turkey holds big sway in the area having sent in troops in a series of
incursions beginning in 2016, and also backs some of the rebels there who are
fighting President Bashar al-Assad's forces.
The
senior regional security source said Jasim was in northwestern Syria when he
was caught with help from local security forces - an apparent reference to
Syrian rebels. The two Iraqi sources said he was detained in Turkey shortly
after being lured over the border.
One
of the Iraqi sources said Iraqi intelligence agents had been tracking Jasim for
months. Information from an ISIS prisoner detained last year had contributed to
his capture, the second Iraqi security source said.
The
sources declined to give further details including when Jasim was captured,
saying this would risk future operations.
His
capture could yield significant intelligence about the remnants of the ISIS
group which was driven from its cross-border “caliphate” in Syria and Iraq
years ago but still carries out attacks in both countries.
Jasim
had been flown to Iraq from Turkey in a military plane, the two Iraqi security
sources and an Iraqi military source close to the Iraqi military aviation
service said.
One
of the Iraqi sources shared a photo they said showed Jasim being brought to
Iraq on the plane. It showed a person in a yellow jumpsuit, their face covered,
being escorted from the plane by Iraqi security personnel in balaclavas.
Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the image.

Saudi
Arabia called on United Nations organizations to “find accurate, reliable,
impartial and transparent mechanisms to monitor the implementation” of humanitarian
aid and its distribution, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported
Wednesday.
This
will “ensure continued confidence in international justice and security, by
preventing the exploitation of individuals affiliated with UN or international

added.
The
Kingdom’s remarks were given by Nidaa Abu-Ali, Counselor and Head of Legal

UN, in a speech at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
Abu-Ali

and experts delegated to international missions.”
Criminal
accountability
However,
the counselor said there was a need to “adhere to criminal accountability for
UN employees, experts and envoys,” SPA reported, especially since the system
was established with the aim of achieving international peace and security and
is “an icon symbolizing global justice.”
She
added that any violation of the various legislations of the system by those
working on it negatively affects the credibility of the United Nations.

The
US State Department on Tuesday appointed veteran diplomat Elizabeth Jones as a

WASHINGTON
The
US on Tuesday condemned a cross-border attack on Turkish soil and offered
condolences for the killings of two Turkish police offers in northern Syria.
"We
condemn the cross-border attack against our NATO ally Turkey. We express our
condolences to the families of the Turkish national police officers who were
killed in Syria," said State Department spokesman Ned Price at a news
conference.
"We
underscore the importance of maintaining cease-fire lines, and halting
cross-border attacks," said Price.
Three
mortar shells were fired Monday from an area occupied by YPG/PKK into different
locations in the Karkamis district of southeastern Gaziantep province. No
casualties took place in the attack, according to the Gaziantep governor's
office.
The
two Turkish special operations police officers were killed and two others
wounded when the PKK’s Syrian offshoot carried out a terror attack Sunday in
northern Syria.
The
casualties occurred when YPG/PKK terrorists attacked an armored vehicle with a
guided missile in the Operation Euphrates Shield zone.
"It
is crucial for all sides to maintain and to respect cease-fire zones to enhance
stability in Syria, and to work towards a political solution to the
conflict," said Price.
Turkey
has been carrying out operations against terror groups in northern Iraq and
Syria, particularly against the PKK and its Syrian offshoot, the YPG.
In

G20
leaders ‘laser-focused’ on anti-terrorism efforts in Afghanistan
October
12, 2021
WASHINGTON
D.C.: G20 leaders holding a virtual summit on Afghanistan Tuesday are
“laser-focused” on keeping the Taliban-ruled country from becoming a militant
haven and on providing humanitarian aid, says a US readout on the meeting.
Leaders
of the world's major economies including US President Joe Biden, joined by
representatives of the United Nations and key intermediary Qatar, “discussed
the critical need to maintain a laser-focus on our enduring counterterrorism
efforts, including against threats from ISIS-K,” a White House statement said.
It
was referring to Daesh's offshoot in the region, a bitter rival of the Taliban
that has staged a series of deadly attacks of late as it tries to destabilize
the country's new rulers.
It
claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed 55 people last week in
a Shiite mosque.
The
G20 leaders also discussed the need to provide safe passage for foreign
nationals and “Afghan partners” with documentation who hope to leave
Afghanistan, the US readout said.
The
leaders also reaffirmed a commitment to provide humanitarian assistance
directly to the Afghan people through independent international organizations,
and “to promote fundamental human rights for all Afghans, including women,
girls, and members of minority groups.”
The
US -- which completed a chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in late August --
remains committed to “using diplomatic, humanitarian, and economic means to
address the situation in Afghanistan and support the Afghan people.”
The
G20 needs to maintain contact with Afghanistan's Taliban government but this
does not mean the Kabul administration will be formally recognised, Italian
Prime Minister Mario Draghi also said Tuesday.
Speaking
after chairing a special G20 summit on the Afghan crisis, Draghi said the
virtual meeting had been a success despite the absence of key leaders such as
China's Xi Jinping and Russia's Vladimir Putin.
“This
was the first multilateral response to the Afghan crisis ... multilateralism is
coming back, with difficulty, but it is coming back,” Draghi told reporters
after the video conference.
There
was unanimous agreement among the participants about the need to tackle
Afghanistan's mounting humanitarian crisis and safeguard the position of women
in the impoverished nation, Draghi said.
“It
is very hard to see how you can help people in Afghanistan without involving
the Taliban,” Draghi said.
Qatar's
diplomatic point man on Afghanistan said countries should engage the country's
new Taliban rulers, warning that isolation could lead to instability and a
wide-reaching security threat.
Mutlaq
bin Majed Al-Qahtani, Qatar’s special envoy for counterterrorism and mediation
in conflict resolution, said he's held conversations with the Taliban about
combating terrorism.
The
Taliban, he said, are committed to fighting Daesh and its affiliates, which are
increasingly active in Afghanistan, and ensuring the country is not used by
terrorist organizations.

US
hopes Abraham Accords will help Palestinian-Israeli issue: Officials
13
October ,2021
The
United States is working to expand normalization agreements between Israel and
Arab nations, known as the Abraham Accords, and hopes restoring such ties can
be leveraged to advance progress on the Israeli and Palestinian conflict,
senior State Department officials said on Tuesday.
In
a briefing with reporters previewing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s
meetings on Wednesday with his Israeli and Emirati counterparts, officials
repeated that the Abraham Accords were not a substitute for the two-state
solution between Israelis and Palestinians.
“We
continue to welcome the economic cooperation between Israel and all countries
in the region. We hope that normalization can be leveraged to advance progress
on the Israeli-Palestinian tracks,” a senior State Department official,
speaking on the condition of anonymity said.
Blinken
will first meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and United Arab
Emirates Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan separately at the State Department
on Wednesday. He will then host a trilateral meeting with both of them, the
first of its kind.
The
leaders of Israel, the UAE and Bahrain signed the Abraham Accords at the White
House last September.
The
following month, Israel and Sudan announced they would normalize relations, and
Morocco established diplomatic ties with Israel in December, after US President
Joe Biden defeated his predecessor Donald Trump in the election.
Palestinian
officials said they felt betrayed by their Arab brethren for reaching deals
with Israel without first demanding progress toward the creation of a
Palestinian state. Until last year, only two Arab states - Egypt and Jordan -
had forged full ties with Israel.
The
US officials did not say precisely how Washington aimed to use the
normalization agreements as a tool to make progress on the Israeli-Palestinian
issue.
“Biden
administration has started out with a clear commitment to the two-state
solution. We continue on with that commitment. We seek to advance as we can,
when we can, as best we can,” one of the US officials said.

Israel
opposed to US Palestinian mission in Jerusalem: Justice Minister
12
October ,2021
Israel
will remain opposed to Washington’s plan to reopen a US consulate in Jerusalem
that has traditionally been a base for diplomatic outreach to the Palestinians,
even if political conditions change, an Israeli cabinet minister said on
Tuesday.
The
consulate was subsumed into the US Embassy that was moved to Jerusalem from Tel
Aviv in 2018 by then-US president Donald Trump, steps hailed by Israel and
condemned by Palestinians.
President
Joe Biden wants to reopen the consulate to rebuild relations with the
Palestinians, who seek parts of Jerusalem, as well as the occupied West Bank
and Gaza Strip, for a hoped-for state.
“No
way, no way,” Justice Minister Gideon Saar told a conference hosted by the
Jerusalem Post newspaper when asked if the consulate reopening might go ahead
-- perhaps in the event of this or a future Israeli government yielding to US
pressure.
“It
needs Israeli approval,” he added, speaking in English. “We will not compromise
on this issue” for generations to come.
The
US Embassy had no immediate comment.
The
issue is likely to come up during a visit to Washington on Tuesday by Israeli
Foreign Minister Yair Lapid.
Israeli
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, a nationalist atop a cross-partisan coalition,
opposes Palestinian statehood, and Lapid has said that reopening the consulate
could unsettle the government.

women and children trek six days to escape from Islamists

YENAGOA,
Nigeria, Oct 12 (Reuters) - A group of 15 Nigerian women and children trekked

UN
welcomes renewed commitment to Mali peace deal
James

KIGALI,
Rwand
The
UN on Tuesday welcomed the renewed commitment made by Malian parties towards
the implementation of a peace agreement at the conclusion of a meeting of the
Agreement Monitoring Committee in the capital Bamako.
Stephane
Dujarric, the chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said
the UN also welcomed the Mali government's plan to reintegrate former
combatants.
“In
particular, our UN colleagues welcomed the announcement by the government of
Mali to reintegrate 13,000 ex-combatants by the end of the year and an
additional 13,000 within the next two to three years as part of the global
disarmament, demobilization and reintegration program in Mali,” Dujarric told
journalists at the UN.
“We
also welcome the willingness of the Malian parties to proceed with the
socio-economic reintegration of ex-combatants already registered, including
about 300 women per region.”
Full
implementation of the peace agreement remains central to achieving peace and
stability in Mali and the Sahel region.
The
UN also reiterated its commitment to support the Malians in their efforts.
Mali
has been battling an insurgency linked to al-Qaeda and Daesh/ISIS since 2012,
when unrest erupted in the north of the country.
In
2015, Mali signed a peace agreement in Algiers with several rebel groups in a
bid to curb the violence.

Over
90 kidnapped students and staff of Federal Government College in northwestern
Nigeria’s Kebbi state have been released from their abductors after spending
118 days in captivity.
The
father of one of the students, who requested anonymity, said the students were
released late Tuesday evening.
He
did not disclose whether they have been reunited with their parents.
Another
parent confirmed that he had been informed of the release of the students.
The
released captives were making their way to the state capital from the forest,
where they were kept.
A
security source told Anadolu Agency that government officials will receive them
at the state capital.
Armed
bandits numbering around 150 were said to have invaded the college in broad
daylight and abducted over 90 students and three staff members of the college.
Since
the incident, the college has remained shut for fear of further attacks.
Parents
and guardians became apprehensive with their children in captivity and said
they had lost hope in the ability of the Kebbi state government to secure their
release.

Algeria
court jails brother of deposed president Bouteflika
13
October ,2021
The
powerful younger brother of deposed late Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika
was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for “obstructing the course of
justice”, the official APS news agency reported.
President
Bouteflika was forced to resign in the face of mass protests against his bid
for a fifth term in office in 2019, and died in September aged 84.
His
departure was followed by a string of prosecutions against senior members of
his inner circle, most prominently his brother Said who had been seen as the
real power behind the throne after the longtime ruler suffered a stroke in
2013.
The
prosecution had called for seven years' jail for Said, who was charged with
other former officials for “abuse of office”, “inciting the falsification of
official documents”, “obstruction of justice” and “contempt of court”.
The
main accused at the trial in Dar El Beida, east of Algiers, was former justice
minister Tayeb Louh.
He
was handed six years in prison while tycoon Ali Haddad was sentenced to two
years, APS said. Both were close to the former president.
Ex-inspector
general of the ministry of justice Tayeb Belhachemi was also sentenced to two
years in prison.

UN
court largely sides with Somalia in sea border dispute with Kenya
Andrew
Wasike and Magdalene Mukami
12.10.2021
Somalia
will now own a chunk of what used to be Kenya’s territory in the Indian Ocean
following a judgment on Tuesday by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
In
an illustration issued by the ICJ, despite Somalia not getting what it wanted,
the court’s decision awarded it most of the disputed territory.
Joan
Donoghue, the ICJ president who was leading the 15-member bench of judges, read
out the ruling, asking both Kenya and Somalia to respect the judgment which is
final, without appeal, and binding on the parties.
The
court unanimously found that that there is no agreed maritime boundary between
Somalia and Kenya.
The
court also unanimously rejected the claim made by Somalia that Kenya, by its
conduct in the disputed area, had violated its international obligations.
In
Mogadishu, all Cabinet members led by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Rooble
watched together the ICJ decision on the case.
Somali
President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo hailed the ruling, terming it as a
“historic victory” for his country.
“We
hope that the Kenyan government will respect the supremacy of international law
and will forgo their misguided and unlawful pursuits. Instead, we hope that
Kenya will treat the Court’s decision as an opportunity to strengthen relations
between the two countries and enhance cooperation between the two peoples,” he
said.
Last
week, Kenyan Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Macharia Kamau had said: “The
delivery of the judgment will be the culmination of a flawed judicial process
that Kenya has had reservations with and withdrawn from on account not only of
its inherent bias but also of its unsuitability to resolve the dispute on
hand.”

“Humanitarian

BERLIN
German
Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended dialogue with Turkey despite current
differences, stressing Ankara’s strategic importance for the Western world.
“Turkey
has great ambitions and it’s true that we have witnessed many disappointments
in our relations. But still, we must find pragmatic agreements, even when our
attitudes diverge on major questions,” Merkel told a panel in Israel,
Berlin-based Judische Allgemeine newspaper reported.
During
a question and answer session at the Institute for National Security Studies in
Tel Aviv, Merkel underlined that Turkey and its Western partners “must keep
talking to each other” despite their political differences.
“You
cannot ignore Turkey. It is a member of NATO, and it also plays a central role
for the European Union in the fight against illegal migration,” she stressed.
The
German chancellor also said one cannot choose his or her interlocutors in
international politics when dealing with major regional and global problems.
“Foreign
policy is a mixture of values and interests. Finding the right balance here is

Apex
court reserves decision on SIS legal challenge against Selangor shariah law
12
Oct 2021
PUTRAJAYA,
Oct 12 — The Federal Court here today reserved its decision on a legal action
brought by SIS Forum (Malaysia) to challenge a Selangor Islamic Enactment
provision which empowered state Shariah High Court to review fatwa issued by
the state religious authorities.
A
nine-member panel chaired by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat reserved
judgment after hearing submissions by counsel Datuk Malik Imtiaz Sarwar who
appeared for SIS as the petitioner and Selangor state legal advisor Datuk Salim
Soib@Hamid who represented the Selangor state government as the respondent.
Counsel
Zainur Zakaria and Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla who acted for the Selangor
Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) as interveners also submitted during the
virtual proceedings.
“We
will CAV (curia advisari vult) for the matter. We adjourn this case,” said
Justice Tengku Maimun.
The
others on the bench were Court of Appeal president, Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf; Chief
Judge of Malaya, Tan Sri Azahar Mohamed; Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak,
Datuk Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim and Federal Court judges Datuk Seri Mohd
Zawawi Salleh, Datuk Vernon Ong Lam Kiat, Datuk Zaleha Yusof, Datuk Harmindar
Singh Dhaliwal and Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang.
On
September 22 last year, the Apex Court allowed SIS’s application to obtain
leave to pursue its legal challenge in the Federal Court through Article 4 (4)
of the Federal Constitution.
SIS
sought leave to commence the challenge seeking to declare Section 66A of the
Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003
invalid.
Section
66A states that the Shariah High Court may, in the interest of justice, on the
application of any person, have the jurisdiction to grant permission and hear
the application for judicial review on the decision made by the Majlis
(council) or committees carrying out the functions under this Enactment.
At
the outset, Malik Imtiaz submitted that the power of judicial review was
intrinsic and inherent in the judicial power of the civil courts.
“This
power is exclusively vested in the civil courts. Such power can only be
exercised by the courts established under Part XI of the Federal Constitution.
As noted in Indira Gandhi’s case, Shariah Courts are not such courts and
therefore cannot exercise the power of judicial review,” the lawyer said.
SIS
filed the application in January this year and named the Selangor state
government as the respondent.

Prosecution:
Were Zahid, wife thinking of Malaysia's poor people while shopping at Armani,
LV, Hermes stores?
13
Oct 2021
BY
IDA LIM
KUALA
LUMPUR, Oct 13 — The prosecution today questioned if Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid
Hamidi and his wife were thinking of the poor in Malaysia when they went
shopping at brands associated with luxury goods.
The
prosecution said this when highlighting bankers’ evidence of more than RM1.3
million of charitable foundation Yayasan Akalbudi’s funds having been used to
pay the credit card bills of Ahmad Zahid and his wife.
The
prosecution previously submitted evidence that 43 cheques in Yayasan Akalbudi’s
name had been issued to make payments between January 2014 to January 2016 for
the credit card bills.
Lead
prosecutor Datuk Raja Rozela Raja Toran acknowledged that the couple’s spending
habits would not be part of the legal issue involved in proving the criminal
breach of trust charges against Ahmad Zahid, but remarked on the shopping
shown.
“When
we look at the credit card statements themselves, My Lord, we will be able to
see the spending habits of the accused and his spouse.
“Although
I admit that this is not an issue, their spending habits is not an issue in our
case, My Lord, but one cannot help but wonder whether they had in mind the poor
people in Malaysia when they went shopping in Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton or
Hermes,” she told the court.
Yayasan
Akalbudi is a foundation aimed at eradicating poverty and enhancing the welfare
of the poor. It is registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia, with
Ahmad Zahid being a trustee as well as subsequently from June 2013 onwards the
sole authorised person who could sign on the foundation’s cheques.
Ahmad
Zahid is accused in this trial of having committed criminal breach of trust
involving more than RM31 million of Yayasan Akalbudi’s funds, including over
RM13 million paid out using 50 cheques — including the 43 cheques for credit
card bills.
Previously,
Ambank senior vice-president Yeoh Eng Leong as the 10th prosecution witness had
in court confirmed credit card statements from December 2013 to January 2016
for Ahmad Zahid's two principal credit cards and two supplementary credit cards
for Ahmad Zahid's wife, with total spending of RM1,479,085.44 or close to
RM1.48 million during that period.
The
Ambank credit card statements had shown that the credit card was used both
locally and globally, including Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong
Kong, Australia, US, UK, Italy, Ukraine and Dubai in the UAE.

Top
court remands TLP chief detention matter back to LHC
October
12, 2021
ISLAMABAD:
A day after the Punjab government challenged in the Supreme Court a Lahore High
Court (LHC) order directing it to release the chief of the proscribed Tehreek-e-Labbaik
Pakistan (TLP) party, the top court Tuesday referred the matter back to a
two-member special bench of the lower court to decide after hearing arguments
from both sides.
Saad
Rizvi, son of the late firebrand cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi, was arrested in
April on charges of inciting his followers and party activists to take the law
into their own hands after, according to him, the government had reneged on its
promise to expel the French ambassador over the publication of blasphemous
caricatures.
His
detention was scheduled to end on July 10 in light of a decision of the review
board of the Supreme Court. However, the office of the deputy commissioner
issued a fresh notification extending the detention for another three months
under Section 11-EEE (powers to arrest and detain suspected persons) of the
Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
During
the proceedings on Tuesday, the government’s counsel argued before a two-judge
bench — comprising Justice Ijaz ul-Ahsan and Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar
Naqvi — that 12 people, including three police officers, lost their lives
during the violent protests in April.
He
recalled the LHC review board had not extended Rizvi’s detention. At this,
Justice Ahsan asked whether a gazette notification of detention had been issued
according to the anti-terrorism provisions to which he was informed that it had
been.
The
counsel for Rizvi, Burhan Moazzam Malik, argued “the government does not have
the authority to extend detention after 90 days.”
“Saad
Rizvi has been in jail for six months without any reason,” he said.
The
bench subsequently remanded the matter to the high court for a two-judge
special bench to decide after hearing the case.
CASE
HISTORY:
On
August 2, Rizvi, through his uncle, filed another petition with the high court,
claiming the government extended his detention with “mala fide intention”. He
said it implicated him in 14 criminal cases following his detention.
Through
the petition, Rizvi’s uncle asked the court to declare the extension of the
detention period illegal and order his release. Two weeks later, on August 17,
the court sought replies from the authorities on the request.
Subsequently,
on October 1, the court declared as illegal the detention of Rizvi. Following
the court order, the Lahore deputy commissioner, Umer Sher Chattha, also issued
orders for his release.

Pakistan
helps rescue Afghan who once saved Biden’s life
October
13, 2021
WASHINGTON:
Pakistan played a key role in evacuating an interpreter from Afghanistan who
had rescued Joe Biden and two other US senators from a snowstorm 13 years ago,
diplomatic sources told Dawn on Tuesday.
The
Human First Coalition, a US-based NGO run by two Americans of Afghan origin,
supervised the evacuation.
“We
are grateful to Prime Minister Imran Khan for his continued support of the
evacuation,” the coalition told US media outlets on Tuesday.
The
statement said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Congressman Jeff
Fortenberry, Senator Chris Coon, Director of Task Force Islamabad Mark
Terkowski and others worked with the coalition in evacuating Aman Khalili and
his family from Afghanistan.
Mr
Khalili helped rescue then senator Joe Biden in 2008 after his helicopter was
forced to make an emergency landing in a remote Afghan valley because of a
snowstorm. Two other senators — Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and John Kerry of
Massachusetts – also accompanied Mr. Biden on that fact-finding mission to
Afghanistan.
On
Aug 31, Mr Khalili sent a message to Mr Biden through the Wall Street Journal,
reminding him that he had been left behind in Afghanistan as the last US troops
exited the country.

Pakhtuns
not terrorists, says ANP
October
13, 2021
PESHAWAR:
The Awami National Party has blasted Prime Minister Imran Khan for linking
Pakhtuns with Taliban and claimed that they had suffered the most in the war on
terror.
In
separate statements issued here on Tuesday, ANP central general secretary Mian
Iftikhar Hussain and provincial president Aimal Wali Khan alleged that the
prime minister had insulted the Pakhtuns by linking them with terrorists. They
said linking a handful of terrorists with Pakhtuns was insult of the
peace-loving people.
Mr
Aimal Wali said ANP leaders and workers had played key role in combating
terrorism by offering sacrifices of lives. He said the world knew very well as
to who had offered Taliban to open office in Pakistan. He lamented that linking
the Pakhtuns with terrorism or describing them as Taliban was unjustifiable and
condemnable.
He
said Pakhtuns would not remain silent if Imran Khan did not seek apology from
them over his derogatory remarks.
Mr
Iftikhar said Pakhtuns had been suffering for the past four decades due to the
war on terror, saying about 70 proscribed organisations had been active in
Punjab but even then Pakhtuns were blamed for terrorism.
He
said Pakhtuns were the worst affected as terrorists had targeted their
political leaders, worship places, funerals and markets.
