Another man, Tejram, a right-wing activist held in Mecca Masjid blast case

By Srinath Vudali

Dec 26, 2012

HYDERABAD: There were three persons and not two who reportedly planted bombs on the premises of the Mecca Masjid in 2007, which resulted in the death of nine persons. Rajender Chaudhary, an accused in the blast case and who was recently arrested in Ujjain, confessed this to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths following which the third person, one Tejram, a right-wing activist, was nabbed near Deepalpur court in Indore on Monday.

NIA sources told TOI that it has now become clear that 25-year-old Tejram, Rajender and the absconding Amit had planted bombs on Mecca Masjid premises in 2007. "It was found that Tejram, Rajender and Amit, all from Madhya Pradesh, follow the same ideology and are affiliated to a right-wing organisation. At this point of time, it is too early to disclose the organisation's name. These persons are active members of the organisation's Indore unit. All the three planted the bombs themselves at Mecca Masjid,'' a senior official said.

On Monday afternoon, two NIA officials went to a local court in Deepalpur, where Tejram was sighted. He was reportedly forced into a car and taken away by the NIA team. The worried family members of Tejram and locals, who were completely taken aback by the development, thought that he was abducted and lodged a missing complaint with the local police station. After several hours, the family members came to know that NIA had picked him up from the court premises.

Rajender is currently in the custody of NIA and the agency's investigators have been grilling him about his handlers besides finding out about those involved in the larger conspiracy, since blasts on Samjautha Express, Ajmer Dargah, Mecca Masjid and a few other places are interlinked.

It is learnt that Tejram might be produced before the Nampally criminal court on Wednesday, but officials are tight-lipped about the developments. Incidentally, all the key accused involved in planting the Mecca Masjid bombs turned out to be persons hailing from Madhya Pradesh, especially from places near Indore and Ujjain. NIA officials suspect that the absconding Amit might also be taking shelter in these two places.

"Investigation so far has revealed that they had undergone training at a jungle near Bagli (Dewas district) in Madhya Pradesh in 2006. After planting the bombs, they returned to Indore via Jaipur. It also came to light that Sandeep Dange, one of the accused named in the chargesheet, had played a crucial role in planning and dispatching the trio to Hyderabad,'' the NIA officials said.

JI India stresses women’s role for progress

December 26, 2012

GUJRAT - The Muslims have neglected women for 500 years or even more as they established colleges and universities only for males and women were debarred from getting education and taking part in socio-economic activities, said Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Islahi of Jamaat-e-Islami India.

Islahi, who is also a member of the Central Advisory Council and Chief Patron of Islamic Circle of North America and author of a many books, visited the University of Gujrat to deliver a lecture on “Human Welfare in Islamic Concept of Life”.

During the lecture, Islahi said “I visited America in 1979 and found only a few mosques. Now, there are about 300 mosques in the US and the educational institutions attached to these mosques are run mostly by women. Knowledge is the basis of Islam. Hazrat Adam (AS) was taught names of all the things that are the basis of languages and the foundation of knowledge. I am very pleased to visit the University of Gujrat and surprised to see its achievements in a short span of only 6 years under the leadership of Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin, the vice chancellor of UoG. I pray for its development and progress.”

The Jamaat leader said that in the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty taught the names of all the things to man which means knowledge is the most fundamental and significant source of human development. Secondly, for the dissemination and propagation of Islam, practice is of permanent importance. We have to build our character. Only character can change the world. We must follow our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The alpha and omega of our religious order is Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) whose practice is the best practice and he is the acme and climax of the humanity.”

The lecture was arranged by Islamic Department of the UoG. Dr Syed Ihsanullah, the JI Gujrat Ameer, along with Dr Muhammad Nawaz while Sheikh Abdul Rashid, the director of Media & Publications, graced the stage along with the chief guest and the speaker. Dr Tahir Aqeel, the UoG Registrar, presided over the function.

Dr Tahir in his address welcomed and thanked Maulana Islahi and appreciated the valuable ideas expressed by him. Dr Aqeel expressed his delight in welcoming the Maulana to the university and extolled the valuable services he was making in India and abroad especially in the US for the spread of Islam.

Sheikh Abdul Rashid, the director, highlighted the five basic pillars of Islam and the significance of human interaction, character-building and social service. At the concluding session, there was a question-answer session wherein the audience took keen interest and asked a many questions which were answered by the scholar.

Polarization in Muslim dominated seats helped BJP in Gujarat

By Ajay Umat

Dec 26, 2012

AHMEDABAD: The ruling BJP had not fielded a single Muslim candidate yet it managed to win in 11 out of the 18 constituencies where Muslim voters are in substantial numbers and could have swung the results in the recently held assembly elections in Gujarat.

A detailed analysis of the data shows soft Hindutva was a factor and that there was polarization on communal lines in these constituencies. Muslims did not vote for BJP in significant numbers. Congress benefited more in these seats but eventually voting on communal pattern only went to work in favour of BJP.

In Gujarat, 66 assembly constituencies have Muslim population varying from 10% to over 60%. BJP won 40 of these seats, the Congress 25 and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) grabbed one. The percentage works out to 60% for BJP and 40% for Congress. When compared to the data for all 182 seats in the state, BJP got 63% and the Congress 34%. Here BJP is at a slight loss.

BJP claims that it had won in 24 constituencies which had more than 15% of Muslim voters, which was a gain of six seats over the 2007 elections. The Congress said it had polled more votes in the Muslim dominated constituencies, as evident from the data.

The Congress gave tickets to six Muslims but only two could win. In Jamalpur-Khadia constituency, which has 61.5% Muslims voters, there was a triangular contest involving two Muslim candidates. The Muslim votes got split here, giving BJP an additional seat in the process.

Vejalpur constituency has 90,000 Muslim voters, who are mainly concentrated in Juhapura and Sarkhej areas. Congress candidate Murtuza Khan Pathan lost from this constituency with a margin of over 40,000 votes. There was polarization on communal lines and he failed to get votes from other communities. This is in contrast to Javed Peerzada's performance in Wankaner who won capturing 39% of all votes polled. Interestingly, the percentage of Muslims in this constituency is just 23.

The percentage of Muslims in Bharuch is 38. However, Congress candidates here polled only 35.5%. BJP won this seat by polling 59.5% of the votes. This indicates that Muslims here had voted for BJP but only marginally. Amir Ali Lodhiya in Bhuj managed to get 39% of the votes though Muslims are just 24% of the population there. Yet he lost by a margin of 8,973 votes due to an independent candidate. The Congress could win Dani Limda and Dariapur seats due to non-division of Muslim votes.

Two Indians found dead in Oman

December 26, 2012

Two Indians have been found dead in their room in an under-construction building in Yimti area, about 125 km from Oman's capital Muscat.

Sharon D’Souza (26), an engineer, and his uncle Lakaylet D’Souza (35) from Karnataka were found dead in an under-construction building in Yimti near Izki on Sunday.

“They might have died due to asphyxiation after inhaling some poisonous gas emitted from objects they had burnt to keep their room warm,” the Times of Oman reported quoting sources.

“One of their roommates who was in the same room is now battling for life in Nizwa hospital,” they added.

According to hospital sources, the man who is battling for his life has been identified as Deepak (24) from Uttar Pradesh and his condition is critical.

He has been found to have inhaled carbon monoxide. “He is on ventilator. Medics are trying their best to save his life,” the hospital sources added.

Sharon, his brother Sajith, Lakaylet and Deepak were staying in the same room of the building, where they were carrying out interior decoration work. All the four were working with a small company.

Sajith is under police custody as part of the investigation. Social Welfare Secretary with the Indian Social Club P.M. Jabir said, “As the company lacks money to repatriate the bodies to India, we have sought the help of the Indian embassy to airlift their bodies.”

India vs Pakistan after cricket it’s time for a thaw

By K. Natwar Singh

December 26, 2012

Can Indo- Pak cricket bonhomie translate itself into goodwill across the border? It will happen in our lifetime, despite the Pakistani military establishment’s antipathy for India

HAVING been ambassador to Pakistan in the early 1980s, I am committed to having cordial good- neighbourly and friendly relations with Pakistan.

I also know that there are certain hurdles which have to be overcome before India- Pakistan relations can genuinely improve. At the same time, I take a realistic and not a sentimental view of our bilateral relations.

Pak revenue official made Osama pay Rs 50,000 bribe for Abbottabad House

Dec 26 2012

Islamabad: Even the world's most wanted terrorist could not escape the bribery dragnet. Osama bin Laden's safe-house in Pakistan's garrison city Abbottabad was built after paying a bribe of Rs 50,000 to a revenue official, a media report today said.

The bribe was paid to the 'patwari' so that bin Laden could construct the compound with a three-storey building, a 14-foot boundary wall and an iron fence, the Urdu daily Jang said in a report.

Details of the bribe emerged after Pakistani officials translated a diary that was purportedly kept by bin Laden.

Benazir devotees miss a monument

Dec. 26, 2012

RAWALPINDI: Local PPP has bedecked Liaquat Bagh’s outer walls with party banners and posters to mark the fifth death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto but what die-hard PPP workers find missing is a monument to their slain leader.

Central leaders of the ruling party may face uneasy questions when they arrive to address a big rally planned on the occasion at the politically historic park on Thursday.

“Every anniversary we come a long way to Liaquat Bagh to pay tribute to our leader but where do we do that? There is no place to revere her,” observed Shakil Azmat, a PPP activist from Attock, surveying the poster-bedecked scene.

“All that, sorts of, marks the spot where she fell to assassins’ bullets is a dusty portrait of her put up by a worker,” he told Dawn.

Malik Mazhar, who used to energise party rallies with his slogan chanting, agreed with his angry party colleague from Attock. He said PPP’s failure to raise a monument to Benazir amounted “to washing away the memory of BB”.

“It hurts,” he added.

ALEPPO: “We don’t have rocket launchers, but I can make a bomb out of practically anything,” says a proud Abu Hudeifa, a university dropout turned member of a jihad group fighting in Aleppo, northern Syria.

“I connect two cables to the vehicle battery, and when they make contact ... boom!” says the 24-year-old, who confesses a deep hatred for President Bashar Assad, as he shows off an old Russian-made rocket mounted on a pickup truck.

Born in the town of Marea in Aleppo province, which has seen fierce fighting between rebels and regime forces for several months — Abu Hudeifa has joined the Al-Nusra Front, blacklisted by Washington as a “terrorist” group.

He, however, bears no anger toward the United States and the focus of his hatred is clear.

“I don’t hate the US or the West... I just want Assad to leave my country and to stop killing people. That’s why I joined Al-Nusra,” he tells AFP.

Not much is known about Sunni Al-Nusra Front except that it is a jihadist group with roots in Iraq and has claimed some of the deadliest attacks against Assad’s forces in the conflict roiling Syria.

Syrian fighters make more gains in north

BASSEM MROUE

26 December 2012

BEIRUT: Syrian rebels fully captured a northern town near the Turkish border on Tuesday after weeks of heavy fighting and attacked a regime air base in a neighboring province, activists said.

The air base is in Aleppo province, where opposition fighters have already captured three other large military bases in recent months. Rebels have also laid siege to the international airport in the city of Aleppo, Syria’s commercial capital, and launched an offensive on the police academy near the city.

With steady rebel gains across the north, President Bashar Assad’s regime is having increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province, especially after rebels cut a major thoroughfare from Damascus. It is just another sign that the opposition is consolidating its grip across large swathes of territory in northern Syria near the Turkish border.

Assad inner circle takes hard line in Syria conflict

December 26, 2012

NICOSIA: The Syrian vice president's criticism of leader Bashar al-Assad has highlighted the cracks in the regime's highest ranks, pitting supporters of compromise against the president's hardline inner circle.

Assad's closest aides believe the regime should keep fighting and that they can still win a war against rebels which has left more than 44,000 dead in almost two years.

"Power has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of just a few people in Assad's clan, which has grown autistic and seems to have chosen to just keep going," Paris-based expert Karim Bitar told AFP.

Assad's circle includes his brother Maher, 44, who heads the army's elite Fourth Division and his wife Asma, an analyst told AFP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

Israel to build 942 more settler homes

 26 Dec 2012

Israel has advanced the process of building 942 more settler homes in East Jerusalem under a new fast-track plan to tighten its grip on the territory, which the Palestinians seek to have as the capital of Palestine.

A government planning committee on Monday moved the project to the advanced stage of asking contractors to submit bids to build them, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

Once a bid is awarded, construction can begin on the project in the Gilo area, though it can take months, if not longer, to reach that point.

An additional 300 units can be built after further planning, said attorney Daniel Seidemann, an expert on Jerusalem construction who sees the building as an obstacle to peacemaking. About 40,000 Israelis live in Gilo.

Major violence by Nigeria's Boko Haram: A history

24 Dec 2012

Reuters looks at Boko Haram and some of the major attacks it has carried out especially against Christians and places of worship:

* Boko Haram became active in 2003 and carried out its first attack in 2004. It has its heartland in the far northeastern corner of Nigeria around Maiduguri. In the Hausa language, Boko Haram means "Western education is sinful." It is loosely modelled on the Afghan Taliban and its followers wear long beards and red or black headscarves.

* Boko Haram is fighting to impose Islamic, or sharia, law on Nigeria, whose population of 160 million people is split evenly between Christians and Muslims. At least 2,800 people have died in fighting in the largely Muslim north since the sect launched an uprising against the government in 2009, watchdog group Human Rights Watch says. Its most lethal attack killed at least 186 people in Kano in January 2012 in coordinated bombings and shootings.

* Boko Haram has repeatedly struck churches during services, carrying out attacks at Christmas and Easter which have killed scores of people. An attack on St. Theresa's Catholic church in Madalla on Abuja's outskirts during a packed Christmas mass in 2011, was the deadliest of a series of Christmas attacks on Nigerian churches and other targets by the sect. At least 37 people were killed. Last Easter Sunday an attempted bombing at a church compound in northern Kaduna during a service went wrong and the bomb exploded by a large group of motorbike taxi riders, killing at least 36 people.

Matia alleged that the BNP was calling protest programmes to save the war criminals rather than to restore the caretaker government system and asserted that this government would finish the trial and execute the verdicts within its tenure.

The minister said this while addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesh Krishak League in the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan.

The Turkmen president had planned to host the representatives of the Taliban and their opponents with the help of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in two months.

Future terrorists to come from various religions: report

Dec. 26, 2012

WASHINGTON: An official US report warns that future terrorists could come from many different religions, including Christianity and Hinduism.

“Right-wing and left-wing ideological groups — some of the oldest users of terrorist tactics — also will pose threats,” the report adds.

But it hopes that the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq and a reduced military presence in Afghanistan will also decrease the terrorists’ ability to use America for stirring up Muslim anger.

“The Future of Terrorism” is part of a larger report that studies global trends between now and 2030. The report was partially released earlier this month but the complete version has now been placed on the US State Department’s website.

“The impending withdrawal of US forces from Iraq and decreases in US forces in Afghanistan will help to reduce the extent to which terrorists can draw on the United States as a lightning rod for anger,” says the report prepared by US intelligence agencies for American policymakers.
