July 31, 2022
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said Saturday
“there are a few people who, in the name of religion or any other belief
system, are resorting to violence and creating mistrust between different
communities”.
Speaking at an interfaith meeting in New Delhi, Doval
appealed to participating religious leaders to reach out to their followers
with the message of a united India where “every Indian is safe’’.
He said one reason for the rise in radicalism and
violence is that the majority of people “do not raise” their voice as much as
they should.
The All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council (AISSC),
which organised the meeting, passed a resolution later, calling for a ban on
the Popular Front of India (PFI) and any religious organisation involved in
radicalism or incidents like the recent killing of a tailor in Udaipur.
Doval told the gathering: “If we have to challenge
this atmosphere (of animosity), then the biggest need is that we have to,
within our country, in our own home, be alert and keep intact our unity, and
make progress as a unified country. The country has made progress with speed in
the last couple of years, and the profit of this progress will be reaped by all
religious communities.”
“But there are many forces that are trying to create
an atmosphere of negativism which obstructs the progress of the nation… There
are a few people who, in the name of religion or any other belief system, are
resorting to violence and creating mistrust between different communities. This
affects the whole country – within the country as well as internationally,” he
said.

New Delhi on Saturday. (Express Photo by Praveen Khanna)
According to the NSA, the reason behind radicalism and
violence is that its counter is not strong enough. “Such animosity is carried
out by a minority of people. But the majority of people, people like you, do
not raise your voices as much as you should. This makes the voices of this
minority seem like they represent the entire India.”
“If we have to fight this, then we can no longer be
mute spectators, but work at the ground level. Strengthen our voices and
organise ourselves. If there is any misunderstanding amongst us, we need to
dispel these. If there are some people who make mistakes, then the mistakes
need to be rectified,’’ he said.
“We have to make everyone feel that this is our
country, which we are proud of and where any religion can be followed with
freedom,’’ he said, adding that different religious communities in India have
existed together for centuries, and every community has had a significant role
in the progress of the country.
Doval said that people from every religious community
have also made “great sacrifices’’ for the nation. “It is our collective
responsibility to rectify this atmosphere.”
Speaking on the centuries-old tradition of Sufism in
India, Doval said, “You can’t permit these people who have vested interests and
agendas of their own to commit violence and disharmony within the country.’’
“We need to assure people and create the emotion, the
belief, that every Indian is safe. And if any one Indian is threatened, then
every Indian will stand with him. We will stay together, or we will sink
together,’’ he said.
AISSC founder-chairman Hazrat Syed Nasiruddin Chishty
said the religious leaders discussed four major issues with the NSA after which
the organisation passed a resolution.
“We raised the issue of hate speech and slogans like
‘sar tan se juda’, ‘goli maaro saalon ko’.. we said such speeches are both
anti-religious as well as anti-national, and need to be
banned. And if there is anyone making such speeches,
then they need to be prosecuted according to the law of the land,’’ Chishty
told The Sunday Express.
“We have very strongly condemned all radical forces.
In the Udaipur incident, investigations pointed to the involvement of the PFI.
We have, therefore, said that the PFI, or any other organisation like the PFI,
that is involved in such violence or seen to be involved in radicalisation
should be banned,’’ he said.
He said the leaders discussed measures to counter
radicalism in the country, and the AISSC will be starting a nationwide movement
soon.
“Social media has been a way through which radicals
are reaching our youth and children. They are sending videos of violence and
hate speeches. We have asked the government to crack down on such platforms and
prevent this from happening,’’ he said.

US Delegation, Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF)
Trustees Meet On Proposed Mosque-Hospital Project At Ayodhya

Jul 31, 2022
AYODHYA: A US Embassy delegation from New Delhi
comprising political officer Karen McCrea and economic and political specialist
Kavleen Chatwal held talks with the trustees of Indo-Islamic Cultural
Foundation (IICF), the Ayodhya Masjid Trust. The American diplomats discussed
the proposed mosque-hospital project at Dhannipur of Ayodhya.
The two-hour long meeting held at a prominent hotel
was attended by the IICF president Zufar Farooqui, trust secretary Athar Husain
and trustee Mohammad Rashid.
The American delegates recorded all the details
regarding the Ayodhya project of the IICF, specially the world-class charitable
hospital and mosque to be built in Ayodhya.
Talking to TOI, Husain said, "We had a long
discussion with the US delegation over the Babri Masjid and Ramjanambhoomi
issue that had a great impact on the political discourse of a vast population
of South Asia and that after the Ayodhya verdict there is hope that all such
long standing issues can be resolved peacefully".
"The situation post the Ayodhya verdict, where
Muslims having faith in the judiciary accepted the verdict hoping to reduce the
Hindu-Muslim divide arising out of the Ayodhya dispute, emphasises that Muslims
still look up to the higher judiciary on issues of dispute for justice with a
high hope," said Farooqui.

Prince Charles’s Foundation ‘Accepted £1million From

Britain's Prince
Charles (AP)
----
By Ted Hennessey
31-07-2022
Prince Charles’ foundation accepted a £1million
payment from the family of Osama bin Laden, it has been reported.
The Sunday Times said Charles secured the money from
Bakr bin Laden for his foundation, the patriarch of the wealthy Saudi family,
and his brother Shafiq, who are both half-brothers of the former Al-Qaeda
leader.
Clarence House strongly disputes many of the claims,
saying the decision to accept the donation to his charity, the Prince of
Wales’s Charitable Fund (PWCF), was taken solely by trustees.
It was reported that Charles, 73, had a private
meeting with Bakr, 76, at Clarence House in London on October 30, 2013, two
years after Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in Pakistan.

Another Delegation Of Tribal Elders And Others Reached
Kabul For Peace Talks With Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan

talks with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). (Photo courtesy: Ariana News)
-----
Bureau Report
July 31, 2022
PESHAWAR: A 17-member delegation of tribal elders and
others reached Kabul on Saturday to resume talks with the outlawed
Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), just as a team of senior religious scholars
returned home after negotiations with the TTP leadership.
The eight-member ulema’s delegation, led by Mufti Taqi
Usmani, has returned from Afghanistan after holding meetings with the TTP
leadership and Afghan Taliban.
A source privy to the ulema’s delegation claimed that
Mr Usmani, respected by the Afghan Taliban as well as the TTP, was able to
convince the militant group that he had reviewed Pakistan’s Constitution and
there was nothing in there which could be construed as un-Islamic.
According to the source, Mr Usmani argued that even if
the militant group deemed a clause or two as un-Islamic, it was neither their
mandate to change it or provided any justification for them to take up arms
against the state.
The militant group, the source said, again broached
the issue of ex-Fata merger, but Mr Usmani told the TTP leadership that he was
a religious scholar and he could only speak on religious matters.
While the TTP released a two-page statement
reiterating its demands and calls for an Islamic system in Pakistan, Mr Usmani
in a tweet sounded optimistic that their meetings with the Afghan Taliban
leadership were useful in strengthening relationship, restoration of peace and
achievement of common goals between the two countries.
Mr Usmani did not make any reference to their meetings
with the TTP leadership but said more details [about the negotiations] would be
shared later. Unconfirmed reports said the outlawed group handed a charter of
demands to the delegation.
The delegation that reached Kabul on Saturday is led
by Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on
Information and Broadcasting. It includes tribal elders and parliamentarians
and is scheduled to stay in Afghanistan for four days.
This would be the group’s second visit to the Afghan
capital to hold parleys with the TTP leadership. The first delegation comprised
58 members.
The first round, described by a participant, as
“cordial and at times tough”, did not make any headway on the TTP’s demand for
the reversal of the ex-Fata merger into KP but the two sides agreed to return
to the table after consultation.
In May, an official team from Pakistan held direct
talks with the TTP leadership and while deadlock persisted on the key TTP
demand, the two sides acceded to the Afghan Taliban leadership’s request for an
indefinite ceasefire and continuation of peace talks.
Dawn has learnt that another meeting was held between
the two sides towards the end of June under the auspices of the “Islamic
Emirate of Afghanistan” which did make some headway, prompting optimism that a
possible peace agreement was achievable.

‘A Muslim Man Asking For Accountability and Working as

Alishan Jafri
31-07-2022
Mohammad Zubair, the 39-year-old fact-checker whose
recent journalistic work made the biggest headlines internationally and
garnered a lot of attention towards the growing culture of genocidal hate
speech and violence against Muslims in India, eventually became a headline
himself when he was arrested in as many as seven cases one after the other for
alleged hateful tweets.
Immediately after his arrest in June, Zubair received
massive support from all over the world and #IStandWithZubair emerged as a top
trend globally. After 23 days of being caught in a cycle of arrest, bail and
re-arrest, the Supreme Court granted him bail for all pending and cases filed
in relation to the same set of tweets, thereby ending what Justice D.Y. Chandrachud

Why Bajrang Muni, the priest who threatened Muslim
women with rape, may go unpunished
Aishwarya Iyer
31-07-2022
On July 20, 38-year-old Bajrang Muni Udasin was
stretched out on a cot draped in a soft saffron rug. The head priest of the
Shri Lakshmandas Udasin Ashram in Uttar Pradesh’s Khairabad was unable to walk
because of an ache in his leg, caused by a nervous condition. He was surrounded
by several policemen, who had solicitously come to the ashram’s audience hall
to ask if “all was well with him”.
Wearily, Udasin described his daily routine. He wakes
up at 11 am and, after his morning meal, presents himself at the audience hall,
where a number of followers gather daily with their grievances, many of which
are complaints against local Muslims. Udasin claimed to be tireless in his
efforts to sort out such problems – “even if I get a call, I reach the spot
immediately”.

Putin’s War in Ukraine Politicizing Muslims in Russia,

Staunton, July 7 – Vladimir Putin has extended his
repressive moves against Muslims from those he identifies as radicals to those
even he has called moderate traditionalists, the Idel-Ural movement says.
Together with his war in Ukraine, this is radicalizing the faithful and leading
more Muslims to conclude that only secession can save their community.
This is recreating a situation like the one that

one when many Muslims within Russia thought about escaping Moscow’s rule but

Preston mosque 'should be a planning matter only and
not cause friction in local community'
By Paul Faulkner
31 JUL 2022
A councillor who asked the government to have the
final say over whether a major new mosque can be built alongside one of
Preston’s busiest road junctions says he hopes that there will be no “lingering
bitterness” between those on either side of the debate – whichever way the
decision goes.
Graham Jolliffe, who represents the Preston Rural East
ward on Preston City Council, was speaking ahead of a public inquiry next week
which will be key to determining whether the landmark place of worship ever
gets off the drawing board. His comments came following the emergence of an
anonymous website – set up to criticise the proposal – which those backing the
mosque have branded “offensive”.
The city council’s planning committee gave the green
light back in February to what would be known as the Brick Veil Mosque, which
had been proposed for a prominent plot overlooking the Broughton roundabout –
where the A6, M6 and M55 all meet on the outskirts of the city. However, Cllr
Jolliffe and Wyre and Preston North MP Ben Wallace made separate requests to
the then Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove for him to “call in” the
application – which has divided local opinion – in order either to rubber stamp
its approval or overturn it.

Imran ‘abettor’ in $250m laundering case: minister
Kalbe Ali
July 31, 2022
ISLAMABAD: Days after a report in British daily the
Financial Times revealed that incarcerated Abraaj Group chief Arif Naqvi
bankrolled the PTI, Minister of State for Petroleum Dr Musadik Malik on
Saturday termed the party chief Imran Khan an “abettor” in the $250 million
money-laundering scam while PML-N leader Mohammad Zubair dared Mr Khan to “come
clean” and challenge the news story in a court.
Addressing a press conference, Dr Malik, without
naming anyone, questioned a decision by the Supreme Court in 2018 that had
declared the PTI chairman “honest and truthful” in a disqualification case
against him.
The PML-N leader said Imran Khan was the “guarantor”
of Arif Naqvi, chief executive of the Abraaj Group who was indicted by US
prosecutors in a range of cases and faces up to 291 years in jail if found
guilty. Dr Malik claimed that Mr Khan was the “abettor” in a $250 million money

Regulation of Islamic Financial Institutions Needs to

Petir Garda Bhwana
31 July 2022
TEMPO.CO, Durham - Regulation and supervision of
Islamic Financial Institutions (IFIs) need to be continuously improved,
according to the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Institute. Research conducted
by the IsDB Institute shows the attitude of stakeholders in IFIs who mostly
believe that the regulatory and supervisory framework for risk mitigation for
IFIs is sufficient. However, the room for improvement continues to be
increased, especially in several important issues.
"It is necessary to create risk management
guidelines that can capture the Sharia aspects of various risks that can arise
in IFIs activities," said Hylmun Izhar, Senior Economist IsDB Institute,
at the Durham Islamic Finance Summer School (FIFSS) event, 29 July 2022, at

articulation where risk management can be translated into products at the

PM Modi, Sheikh Hasina to inaugurate Maitree Power
Project in Bangladesh
By Shishir Gupta
Jul 31, 2022
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina are expected to jointly inaugurate the 1320 MegaWatt
Maitree Super Thermal Power Station when the latter visits India for a
three-day visit in the first week of September. Touted to be Bangladesh’s
largest power plant, the coal-fired station is being set up by Bangladesh India
Friendship Power Company Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between India’s NTPC
and Bangladesh Power Development Board. The project is worth USD 1.5 billion.
While Bangladesh PM Hasina is expected to visit India
any time between September 5 and 7 and stay for two to three days, the visit
has been accorded utmost importance by the Modi government as Dhaka happens to
be one of India’s closest allies. Before PM Hasina arrives in Delhi, trial runs
between Kolkata-Chattogram-Mongla ports for India Bangladesh trade will begin
posting a new chapter in the bilateral ties. The first vessel from Kolkata is
expected to reach Mongla, on Pashur River, on August 5 carrying 16 tons of iron
pipes in a container with destination Meghalaya using the Tamabil-Dwaki border
points and 8.5 tons of pre-foam in another container for Assam using the

alternative routes for India to reach its North-East region while at the same
time carrying export-import containers for Bangladesh.

Neighbour’s envy: India’s jute economy is faltering
while Bangladesh’s is flourishing; here’s why
By Shagun
30 July 2022
“Just 10 years ago, this whole area was under jute, as
far as the eye could see. Not anymore,” says Narayan Ghosh, pointing at a vast stretch
of farmland in Saguna village of West Bengal’s Nadia district.
“The vegetation was so dense and the plants so tall,
over three metres, that the traders who came to buy jute did not dare to enter
the fields alone for fear of being lost,” says Ghosh, a farmer who owns 0.5
hectares (ha) in the village.

How clean nuclear energy will put Saudi Arabia ahead
of the climate-change curve
JONATHAN GORNALL
July 31, 2022
LONDON: When a newspaper headline begins with the
prefix “revealed,” most readers are sufficiently familiar with media shorthand
to know that they are expected to react to the article that follows with
surprise, or perhaps even concern.
But when the UK’s Guardian newspaper ran a story in
2020 headlined “Revealed: Saudi Arabia may have enough uranium ore to produce
nuclear fuel,” the real surprise was that the story was getting on for 50 years
old.

What makes Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque a top
destination?
July 31, 2022
Gulf News Report
STRONG CORPORATE RESULTS SHOW UAE ECONOMY IS ON THE
RIGHT TRACK: The past week has been a busy one with some of UAE’s top companies
announcing their half-yearly or quarterly results. And the numbers have one
thing in common – they all point towards a healthy business environment that
allows businesses to thrive and boosts consumer confidence. Top banks like
Dubai’s Emirates NBD and Abu Dhabi’s FAB have unveiled stellar results, and
most importantly, seen a sharp drop in impairment charges. Loan books have increased
in size, too, pointing to improved consumer confidence. This echoes the UAE’s
Central Bank report earlier this month, which said individuals and corporates
in the UAE borrowed more in the second quarter of 2022 as improving economic
outlook drove demand. Lending remained strong despite recent interest rate
increases, the apex bank had said in its Q2 Credit Sentiment Survey. The icing
on the cake was the H1 performance of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways. After a
painstaking four-and-a-half-year turnaround journey, the carrier swung to a
core operating profit of $296 million in the first half, despite fuel costs
increasing by almost 60 per cent in comparison to the same period last year.
