Raking Up The Temple-Mosque Controversy Akhara Parishad Urges Vacating Ancient Temples ‘Converted’ To Mosques

Raking up the temple-mosque controversy, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad Mahant Ravindra Puri on Monday demanded that ancient temples "converted" into mosques across the country should be vacated.

The president of the 'Akhara', which is an apex religious body of 13 monastic Hindu orders, also said that there is no bar on Muslims visiting Maha Kumbh.

"When I went for a tour across India for 'Dharma Prachar' (propagation of religion), the dome of most of the mosques resembled that of a temple, and you will find symbols of 'Sanatan' inside them (mosques). Around 80 per cent of mosques are on temples all over India," Puri, who is also the president of the Mansa Devi Temple Trust in Haridwar, told PTI.

To a question whether he will request Muslims to hand over such structures to Hindus, the akhara chief said, "We have appealed a thousand times for this. Our ancient temples, which have been converted into mosques should be vacated, and we are ready to leave a temple, which has been built over a mosque. We make the request once again from the Maha Kumbh." "We have demanded the formation of a Sanatan Board, and on January 27, a 'Dharma Sansad' will be organised, where we have invited prominent seers from the country and also from the world. The main issue will be the formation of a Sanatan Board like the Waqf Board, so that our 'math' and temples are safe," Puri said.

Asked about remarks by some Muslim clerics that Muslims should not go to the Kumbh, and that whether there is any such ban on Muslims from coming to the Maha Kumbh Mela, he said, "I would like to say that we have never banned Muslims from coming to the Kumbh. We have always welcomed them by asking them to come, and see our Sanatan Dharma, and the work done by us.

"We have never opposed Muslims (from coming to the Kumbh). We have opposed those who spit and insult (other religions), those indulging in love jihad, land jihad and other similar things. Why should we oppose an ordinary Muslim? he said.

Puri also accused the Congress of making a plan to end 'akaharas' due to its pro-Muslim stance, and said after the formation of the Narendra Modi government, the 'akharas' have got some strength.

"The Congress made such plans to end the 'akharas', that we were not given any constructive work. The attitude of the Congress was different (towards us), and it had reposed more faith in the Muslims. After the formation of the Narendra Modi government, the 'akharas' have got some strength." Puri also said that the common terms associated with the Kumbh --- 'shahisnaan' and 'peshwai' --- have been changed to 'amritsnaan' and 'chhavnipravesh' respectively.

"All of us speak words in Hindi and in Urdu...But, we thought that when it comes to our Gods, we should make efforts to have a name in Sanskrit or have a 'Sanatani' name. Our intention is not to make it as Hindus versus Muslims," he said.

He also said the first 'Amrit Snaan' of this Maha Kumbh on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on Tuesday will begin at 5.30 am.

Jigawa Judicial Service Commission Orders Three Sharia Judges To Resign

13th January 2025

Map of Jigawa State

-------------

The Jigawa Judicial Service Commission has directed three Sharia court judges to resign and terminated the appointments of three officers over allegations of misconduct.

During its 178th meeting in Dutse, the commission received an investigative report from the High Court department regarding Iyal Ibrahim (Higher Registrar, GL 08) and BaffaAlhaji (Principal Registrar, GL 14).

The officers were found guilty of illegally selling two vehicle exhibits belonging to the Federal High Court, Dutse, a violation categorised as official misconduct under Rule 5 (4) & (6) of the Jigawa State Judiciary Scheme of Service (2006).

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Protocol & Publicity for the Jigawa State Judiciary, Abbas Wangara.

“This act constitutes official misconduct punishable under Rule 5 (4) & (6) of the Jigawa State Judiciary Scheme of Service (2006). The commission has, therefore, resolved to terminate their services in line with Section 41 of the Judicial Service Commission Law, Cap. J20 Laws of Jigawa State (2012),” the statement read.

Similarly, the commission received a report concerning Abdu Hassan Aujara (Chief Clerical Officer), who was accused of suppressing N965,000—a litigant’s deposit in a recovery case filed by Ja’iz Bank at the Chief Magistrate Court, Jahun.

“After careful deliberation, the commission resolved to terminate his appointment under Section 41 of the Judicial Service Commission Law,” the statement said.

The commission also reviewed a report from the Judiciary Public Complaint Committee  regarding Alkali AdamuIsyakuFarin-Dutse, a Sharia court judge accused of judicial misconduct and misapplication of the law.

“The judge had been warned several times in the past for similar behavior,” the statement noted. “After thorough deliberation, the commission found him liable for misconduct under Section 5.4 of the Judiciary Scheme of Service and resolved to request his resignation within two weeks.”

In another case, Alkali Muhammad Shehu Usman, a Sharia court judge, was found guilty of “issuing a writ of possession before delivering judgment, a clear violation of judicial procedures.”

The commission advised him to resign within two weeks, stating: “His actions are in breach of the Judiciary Scheme of Service, and this decision aligns with Section 41 of the Judicial Service Commission Law.”

Additionally, Alkali Usman Usman Zubair, another Sharia court judge, was accused of improperly adjudicating an inheritance dispute.

“He refused to properly distribute shares to legal heirs and allowed a non-party to benefit from the case,” the statement said. The judge, who had been previously warned, was advised to resign within two weeks.

The Commission also issued a warning letter to Resident Magistrate Gumel, MunnirSarkiAbdullahi, for converting a civil matter into a criminal case and showing partisanship.

“His actions undermine judicial neutrality, and he has been warned under Section 41 of the Judicial Service Commission Law,” the JSC stated.

Similarly, Magistrate Yakubu Ibrahim was cautioned for “abusing his power by insulting and using derogatory language toward a litigant at the Chief Magistrate Court, Maigatari.”

The Jigawa State Judicial Service Commission reaffirmed its commitment to “maintaining judicial integrity and providing a fair working environment for all employees.”

Biden calls for immediate ceasefire in call with Netanyahu, White House says

January 12, 2025'

---------

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden spoke on Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House said, as US officials race to reach a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal before Biden leaves office on Jan. 20.

Biden and Netanyahu discussed efforts underway to reach a deal to halt the fighting in the Palestinian enclave and free the remaining hostages there, the White House said in a statement after the two leaders spoke by telephone.

Biden “stressed the immediate need for a ceasefire in Gaza and return of the hostages with a surge in humanitarian aid enabled by a stoppage in the fighting under the deal,” it said.

Netanyahu updated Biden on progress in the talks and on the mandate he has given his top-level security delegation now in Doha in order to advance a hostage deal, Netanyahu said in a statement.

The two leaders also discussed “the fundamentally changed regional circumstances following the ceasefire deal in Lebanon, the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, and the weakening of Iran’s power in the region,” the White House said.

Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN’s “State of the Union” program earlier on Sunday that the parties were “very, very close” to reaching a deal, but still had to get it across the finish line.

He said Biden was getting daily updates on the talks in Doha, where Israeli and Palestinian officials have said since Thursday that some progress has been made in the indirect talks between Israel and militant group Hamas.

“We are still determined to use every day we have in office to get this done,” Sullivan said, “and we are not, by any stretch of imagination, setting this aside.”

He said there was still a chance to reach an agreement before Biden leaves office, but that it was also possible “Hamas, in particular, remains intransigent.”

During their call, Netanyahu also thanked Biden for his lifelong support of Israel and “the extraordinary support from the United States for Israel’s security and national defense,” the White House said.

Israel launched its assault in Gaza after Hamas fighters stormed across its borders in October 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Since then, more than 46,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials, with much of the enclave laid to waste and gripped by a humanitarian crisis, and most of its population displaced.

Vice President-elect JD Vance told the “Fox News Sunday” program in an interview taped on Saturday that he expects a deal for the release of US hostages in the Middle East to be announced in the final days of the Biden administration, maybe in the last day or two.

President-elect Donald Trump, a staunch supporter of Israel, has strongly backed Netanyahu’s goal of destroying Hamas. He has promised to bring peace to the Middle East, but has not said how he would accomplish that.

Iranian MP: Water Rights must be enforced against Taliban

ByFidel Rahmati

January 13, 2025

An Iranian MP, Ahmad BakhshayeshArdastani, stated that the Taliban does not adhere to diplomacy or water treaties, emphasizing that Iran’s water rights from the Helmand River must be claimed, not granted.

Ardastani emphasized in an interview with an Iranian media outlet on Sunday, January 12, saying, “Water rights must be claimed, not granted.”

Ardastani alleged that the Taliban views Iran as weak, much like the United States, and seeks to renegotiate the existing treaty to sell water to Iran. However, the Taliban has officially denied undermining the treaty, claiming that they are fulfilling Iran’s water rights, which Tehran disputes.

Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi announced during a visit to Sistan and Baluchestan that the government is pursuing its Helmand River water rights with the Taliban and that negotiation results will soon be shared.

Former Taliban Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs, Abdul Kabir, recently stated that the water rights issue has been resolved amicably between Afghanistan and Iran. He warned that irresponsible statements could harm bilateral relations.

Ardastani accused the Taliban of attempting to invalidate the existing treaty, blocking the Helmand River’s flow at Kajaki Dam, and raising concerns about the drying up of the Harirud River. He also noted that the Taliban is leveraging Iran’s tensions with the U.S. to seek advantages.

Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, have reiterated their commitment to resolving the water rights dispute with Afghanistan. Efforts are underway to engage the Taliban diplomatically and secure Iran’s rightful share.

Iran has adopted a policy of restraint to maintain peace along its eastern borders. Officials stress that this approach reflects strategic prudence rather than weakness, emphasizing the importance of stability in the region.

In 1973, Afghanistan and Iran signed the Helmand River Water Treaty, granting Iran 22 cubic meters per second (m³/s) of water from the Helmand River. An additional 4 m³/s was included as a goodwill gesture, bringing the total allocation to 26 m³/s, or approximately 850 million cubic meters annually.

The treaty aimed to balance equitable water distribution while respecting Afghanistan’s sovereignty. However, disputes over water flow and compliance have persisted, driven by regional tensions and differing interpretations of the agreement.

The Helmand River dispute highlights the challenges of water resource management in a politically sensitive region. Resolving this issue requires cooperative diplomacy, balancing Afghanistan’s water needs with Iran’s rights. Mismanagement or escalation could worsen tensions and negatively impact regional stability and livelihoods on both sides.

Verdict delayed for third time in £190m case against Imran, Bushra Bibi

------------

RAWALPINDI: The £190 million case verdict involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, has been postponed for the third time.

Accountability court Judge Nasir Javed expressed dismay over the no-show of the accused, saying that he had been present at the court since 8:30am, leading to the postponement of the verdict which will now be announced on January 17.

Khan had previously claimed that the verdict — initially delayed on December 23, 2024, and again on January 6, 2025 — was postponed to "pressurise him". However, he did not appear in court today.

"I have been sitting in the courtroom for two hours, but none of them have appeared today," the judge told reporters present in the courtroom, adding: "Let's give them another chance."

The National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) prosecution team, the media, and the court staff were present in the court room, but none from the defence were in attendance.

While the sentence was scheduled to be handed down at 11am and the judge postponed the announcement before that, Geo News' reporter Shabbir Dar said that the parties involved generally reach ahead of time.

Today's deferment in the £190m reference verdict — termed an "open-and-shut case" by Senator Faisal Vawda — comes amid the government's hope for justice as expressed by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif.

Whereas, Vawda on the other hand, in his press conference a day earlier, said that the PTI founder "committed a crime and will face punishment" in the settlement case.

"When Khan was signing it, I warned him that it would lead to a NAB case [...] Being popular doesn't mean you're above everything else," he said.

PTI rules out deal

Reacting to the deferment while speaking to the media outside Adiala jail, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan ruled out the verdict's postponement as part of any deal.

"We were all waiting today at the court as the court staff had informed us that the verdict would be announced today at 11am," he said.

Terming the case as a politically motivated one Gohar remarked: "The Al-Qadir Trust case is politically motivated and part of an unfair process whose aim is to compromise Khan sahib, his wife was also dragged into this case to pressure Khan".

"He [Khan] has neither harmed the national exchequer nor had he benefited from the university. He is only a trustee. This is a baseless case," noted the PTI chairman, adding: "Khan sahib will not bow down, he will stand firm. He will keep fighting for the people, judiciary, and the Constitution".

"We have repeatedly emphasised that Khan sahib has stressed that the Al-Qadir Trust case's verdict should be pronounced [....] It's a writing on the wall: we have been subjected to injustice, the trial courts have been unjust to us," he said while lamenting the PTI founder's legal woes and the postponement of the verdict.

Explaining further, Gohar said that Khan would have appeared, while Bushra was on her way. The PTI chairman added that several others, including Khan's sisters, were already there in the courtroom.

"We will move higher courts. Like all previous cases, we will also have this case dismissed," Gohar vowed, reiterating that the former prime minister did not benefit from the Al-Qadir Trust.

PTI's Secretary General Salman Akram Raja also echoed Gohar's remarks and said: "The negotiation process is underway [....] However, if someone wants to give the impression that the verdict has been delayed due to these talks, then it is completely false. We will not enter into any deals".

Stressing that the former prime minister would prove his innocence in courts as he did in the iddat and cypher cases, Raja said: "We will fight the cases and not enter any deals".

The lawyer clarified that the party was not seeking relief for anybody and there was no link between the ongoing talks with the government and the £190m case.

Case overview

The couple, along with others, has been accused by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in its December 2023 reference for allegedly adjusting Rs50 billion — £190 million at the time — sent by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pakistani government as part of the agreement with a property tycoon.

Subsequently, the then-prime minister got approval for the settlement with the UK crime agency from his cabinet on December 3, 2019, without disclosing the details of the confidential agreement.

It was decided that the money would be submitted to the Supreme Court on behalf of the tycoon.

According to NAB officials, the PTI founder and his wife obtained land worth billions of rupees from the property tycoon, to build an educational institute, in return for striking a deal to give legal cover to the property tycoon’s black money received from the UK crime agency.

Later, the Al-Qadir Trust was established in Islamabad a few weeks after the PTI-led government approved the agreement with the property tycoon.

Trial

The accountability watchdog arrested the PTI founder on November 13 last year in connection with the said case. NAB then interrogated Khan and Bushra for 17 days in the Adiala Jail.

The trial began after filing of the NAB reference on December 1, 2023. On 27 February 2024, charges were formally filed against the couple.

Notable witnesses against the PTI founder included his former cabinet member Pervez Khattak, former federal minister Zubaida Jalal, ex-principal secretary Azam Khan, and the chief financial officer of the Al-Qadir University.

The court also declared six co-accused, including Zulfi Bukhari, Farhat Shahzadi, Mirza Shahzad Akbar and Zia-ul-Mustafa Nasim, as absconders, ordering the freezing of their assets and bank accounts.

During the proceedings, the Islamabad High Court granted bail to the disqualified premier in the £190 million reference, while the trial court approved pre-arrest bail for Bushra.

The PTI founder-chairman submitted a list of 16 witnesses to the court, but the request to summon them was rejected.

Over the course of the case, four judges were replaced with Judge Muhammad Bashir, Judge Nasir Javed Rana, Judge Muhammad Ali Warraich, and then again Judge Rana presiding over the hearings.

'Vote Jihad Part 2': Maharashtra  CM Claims Bangladeshis Obtaining Documents Illegally

Jan 12, 2025

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said that Bangladeshi migrants seeking birth certificates illegally in the state to obtain voting rights was “vote jihad part 2".

Addressing the state BJP's convention in Shirdi, Fadnavis said that nearly 100 such cases have been reported in Amravati and Malegaon tehsil in Nashik.

"Bangladeshi infiltrators are seeking birth certificates in Maharashtra as part of vote jihad part 2. Nearly 100 such cases have been reported in Amravati and Malegaon tehsil in Nashik. These people, many aged around 50 years, are obtaining documents illegally," Fadnavis was quoted as saying by PTI.

He asserted that not a single infiltrator would be allowed to stay in Maharashtra.

Fadnavis also said that his government is committed to combating “anarchist forces”, who, he alleged, were attempting to create caste-based and communal divisions. He urged the public to stay vigilant and ensure this resolve is strengthened.

Earlier, Fadnavis, during the November assembly poll campaign, had cited instances of a community voting en masse against the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier in 2024, and had termed this as “vote jihad”, according to PTI.

In his Sunday's address, Fadnavis also reflected on the BJP's stellar performance in the November assembly polls and hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

He thanked the two leaders for guiding and instilling confidence among party workers after the setbacks faced in the Lok Sabha polls.

"In the last 30 years in Maharashtra, the BJP is the only party which crossed the 100-seat mark in three consecutive polls (2014, 2019 and 2024). PM Modi's leadership gave us confidence and BJP got 132 seats with a strike rate of 89 per cent," he said.

He also urged party workers to stay prepared for the coming local body polls in the state. "We must remain ready and united. The PM's mantra of 'ekhain to safe hain' (unity ensures safety) must guide us," he told the gathering.

Waqf Board Claims: Various Organisations And Srirangapatna Farmers, Who Fear Losing Their Lands To The Board, Call For Bandh

Jan 12, 2025

Mandya: Various organisations have called for a bandh in Srirangapatna on Jan 20, protesting against the Karnataka Waqf Board's claims on lands and historical structures. The controversy has sparked unrest among farmers and local communities, who fear losing their lands and properties to the board.

Farmers in Srirangapatana taluk are particularly concerned, as the Waqf Board's name was reportedly recorded in the RTC (Record of Rights, Tenancy, and Crops) documents of over 70 agricultural lands. Villages such as Kirangoor, K Shettahalli, and Baburayanakoppalu are among the affected areas, where over 50 farmers' RTCs list the Waqf Board's name. Farmers are now left anxious and confused as to why the Waqf Board's name has appeared in their property documents.

Srirangapatanatahsildar Parashuram Sattigeri has reassured farmers that there is no need to panic. He clarified that his office has not issued any recent notifications regarding the Waqf Board's claims and emphasised that such entries might date back to 2014-15. "If farmers have any issues or confusion, they should bring their relevant documents to the office. We will help them resolve any discrepancies and provide justice," Sattigeri said. He further noted that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) continues to manage some key historical monuments in the region, including Jamia Masjid, the Summer Palace, and Tipu estate.

Various groups, including Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, Farmers' Associations, and Mandya Rakshana Vedike, have extended their support to the farmers. They plan to organise a large-scale protest on Jan 20, with farmers set to march with their cattle.

Sambhal issue imparting a new dimension to the Politics of Uttar Pradesh

By Daily Excelsior -

January 13, 2025

Sambhal is an inflection point with many implications, some of which are already in play. One, there is a new ‘old Sambhal’ emerging before disbelieving eyes, the preserved remains of a long-lost town that existed much-much before the majority of those among today’s living were born, maybe even their parents and their grandparents were born, going back to several generations.

The archeological finds being discovered on a daily basis appears straight out of a period drama with fading images of people who populated an India of long, long ago. Of princesses and princes, of kings and queens, of conquests and conquerors; of the vanquished and of takeovers of their temples for transformation into places of worship of a religion brought to the subcontinent by invaders.

Right now, after a hiatus of hundreds of years, after the ‘Sambhal’ finds, ‘Sanatan dharma’ is seeing a rejuvenation, both religiously and politically. Elated Hindus are talking of the return of the ‘Golden Age’ in which Bharat is graphically juxtaposed as “Sone Ki Chidiya”. Sambhal’s “discovery” has given a new narrative to Jawaharlal Nehru’s ‘Discovery of India’. Like it or not, you cannot take Nehru-Gandhi out of India and India-reborn!

Left-liberal historians would be horrified but the average Hindu believes Sambhal symbolizes Sanatan’s return to centre-stage after nearly a 1000 years in the wilderness of religious and cultural irrelevance. And it is happening with rising political and economical dominance — vikas and virasat, both!

Since then, politics has taken direct hits and so-called ‘secular political parties’, like Samajwadi Party and the Congress, have had to take a relook at where they stood in terms of their vote-banks. The Samajwadi Party, for instance, is no longer talking from a position of strength that had come with the party’s impressive 2024 Lok Sabha performance.

The spoils of Akhilesh Yadav’s ‘PDA’, which had put Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Abkibaar 400 paar’ in the shade. Today, six months on, where is ‘PDA’? It is as if ‘Pichada Dalit Alpsankyak’ drowned in one of the 19 wells discovered in Sambhal along with barricaded temples and other symbols and signs of the Sanatan.

The question deserves another repeat: Where has ‘PDA’ gone, if not put out to pasture? Second question, where does ‘Sambhal’ leave the INDI-Alliance in the Hindi-belt? And where stands the Congress in the transformed politics of the region post-Sambhal? The 9 UP bypolls had already put Samajwadi Party-Congress ties in no-man’s land. Has ‘Sambhal’ sounded the death-knell?

Today, both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party are competing for the same battered, hit, demoralized and smarting Muslim vote-bank, which had made Sambhal its launching pad for a bigger stake in the politics of the state and country. Which of the two, Samajwadi Party and Congress, will get the all-crucial Muslim votes?

To add to the INDI-Alliance’s troubles, the BJP is also making a play for the Muslim vote-bank, taking advantage of the divisions within the Muslim community. The BJP’s ‘Kundarki victory’, which saw a deep polarisation between the ‘Turk’ and ‘Pathan’ Muslims, was a pointer to the BJP wading into murky waters and muddying it all the more.

The Samajwadi Party’s Sambhal MP Ziaur Rahman Barq is a ‘Turk’ and he is in a deep hole of his own making. Barq has three FIRs lodged against him, including one for allegedly instigating violence in Sambhal, which led to “five Pathan deaths” and over 20 people sustaining injuries. And another FIR for allegedly being the ringleader of a gang of electricity-thieves.

The Allahabad High Court on January 3 granted a stay on his arrest but refused to strike down the FIR. It also ordered Barq to present himself before the ‘IO’ in the cases whenever summoned or else be ready to face arrest. Barq is helpless and going the way of Azam Khan, who had been left to fend for himself ever since Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath went after him with a vengeance.

So, what’s been happening with the Yogi ever since Sambhal broke out in mindless violence? The simple story is post-November 24, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is unbeatable. Sambhal is the Yogi’s ‘baby’ and the uncertainty dogging him in the aftermath of the humiliating “Lok Sabha defeat” has disappeared, gone ‘kaput’.

There is no challenger left in the field and there won’t be till the assembly elections of 2027, which is most worrying for Akhilesh Yadav, who had set his eyes on the 2027 elections for making a comeback. Sambhal shouldn’t have happened, but it happened, which is unfortunate for Akhilesh Yadav, for ‘PDA’, for the Samajwadi Party and for the Congress; for the INDI-Alliance, too.

The fate of Member of Parliament Ziaur Rahman Barq, who is facing tough sections of the BNS, is indication that politicians can no longer get away with throwing their weight around. The UP Chief Minister has sworn to make an example of Barq, which is a direct challenge to Barq’s protector and mentor, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav.

The fate of the Shahi Jama Masjid of Sambhal, an ASI-protected monument, also lies in the balance with the matter in the Supreme Court after AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, pitting himself as a “rehnuma” of the “musalman’, filed a petition in the apex court, quoting verse and chapter of the contentious Places of Worship Act, 1991 and the Waqf Act.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath “cleverly” did not breach the Places of Worship Act, 1991 when his administration dug up Sambhal to unearth long buried Hindu gods including those that the Yadavs venerated. What galls the ‘secular’ is the upper-hand gained by the kowtowing Hindus, of not just Sambhal, but the “disease like Dengue and Malaria” has spread to Bareli, Varanasi and other places of Uttar Pradesh.

Sambhal, along with the upcoming ‘Mahakhumb’ in Prayagraj, is a sign of the times, and of the rejuvenation of the ‘Sanatan’, a metamorphosis of the ecosystem, which political parties and politicians can only ignore at their own peril.

114 plots near Sambhal stepwell sold using fake will, say officials

Jan 12, 2025

Bareilly: A land scam involving fraudulent sales of 114 plots near a historic stepwell in Sambhal's Chandausi town has come to light with plots registered using a fake will and sold primarily to members of the minority community, senior district officials said on Sunday, adding that their ownership is now investigated by police and intelligence agencies. They added that the area was originally part of the Laxmanganj locality, but as the town developed, a new colony named ‘Mughalpura' emerged.

Gulnaz B, 54, the widow of Mohd Yusuf Saifi, who was forced to vacate her house built over the stepwell on an hour's notice on Friday, lodged a complaint accusing Aamna Begum, her husband Zaheeruddin, and others of fraud and issuing threats. Inspector Renu Singh of Chandausi police station confirmed that a probe is underway.

According to the complaint, Gulnaz purchased a 103sqkm plot in 2016 from Aamna Begum. She obtained administrative approval for construction but was compelled to leave her home on Friday, around three weeks after the stepwell was unearthed during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) excavation. Gulnaz claimed that when she approached Aamna and her husband, they threatened her family.

Separately, a survey led by Sambhal DM RajenderPensiya and SP Krishan Kumar Bishnoi revealed encroachments on land belonging to the ASI-protected Chandreshwar Mahadev Temple. The temple originally owned 80 bighas, but only 19 bighas remain under its control. Over 50 bighas, classified as grazing land, were found to be leased out improperly. The ASI signboard on the premises was also damaged.

Bishnoi told TOI, "We have received Gulnaz's complaint. A gazetted officer will verify land records within three days, after which an FIR will be considered. Historical records from 1952, post-zamindari abolition, will be the benchmark for resolving these cases. Leases on nearly 50 bighas of Chandreshwar Mahadev Temple land are being cancelled, and action is underway."

Chandausi SDM Nidhi Patel said, "Land records are being scrutinised to ensure a fair investigation. Revenue officials are also scanning documents related to the stepwell and its surroundings, which include 28 bighas of land surrounding the stepwell." A prominent builder's involvement in the scam is also being investigated, another official said.

The stepwell, believed to be 150 years old, was unearthed during an anti-encroachment drive in the Laxmanganj area on Dec 21. The structure spans approximately 400 square metres and features three levels — two made of marble and one of brick — as well as four chambers and a well. The ASI believes that a tunnel found within the stepwell may have been used as an escape route during the 1857 rebellion against the British Raj.

The discovery of the stepwell has drawn significant attention to the region's historical significance. Excavation work is ongoing under the supervision of the Sambhal administration and the ASI and efforts are underway to remove encroachments covering the remaining area of the site.

'You kept your word': J&K CM Omar Abdullah thanks PM Modi for timely elections

Jan 13, 2025,

NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring the timely conduct of elections in the region and sought restoration of statehood.

Omar lauded PM Modi's presence at the inauguration of the strategically important Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal district.

Paying tributes to seven persons, including a local doctor who lost their lives in a terror attack on the tunnel construction workers last year, he said they have sacrificed their lives for the development of the country and Jammu and Kashmir. The 6.5 km-long tunnel, inaugurated by PM Modi, will provide year-round access to the picturesque Sonamarg tourist resort.

At the event, Abdullah highlighted the significance of the Z-Morh tunnel, noting, “Unfortunately, in the last 35-37 years, thousands of people here sacrificed their lives for the progress of this country, for the development of Jammu and Kashmir... Prime Minister Sahib, your presence here today at the inauguration program of this tunnel is a testimony to the fact that those people who carry out these attacks, those who don’t want the betterment of this country, those who don’t want to see peace and progress in Jammu and Kashmir, can never succeed. They will always have to face defeat here. We will always defeat them and send them back from here.”

Abdullah also recalled PM Modi’s remarks during his visit to Srinagar on International Yoga Day. “You (PM Modi) said 3 very important things during your program in Srinagar on International Yoga Day. You said that you are working on eliminating DilkiDoori (difference of hearts) and Delhi kiDoori (distance from Delhi), and this is really proved by your work... During that time, you had told the people of Jammu Kashmir that very soon elections will be held and people will get a chance to choose their government through their votes. You kept your word and within 4 months, elections were held,” Abdullah said.

The inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel, a key infrastructure project poised to enhance connectivity and boost tourism in the region, was attended by Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and other distinguished officials.\

Anti-terror combing operation stepped up on PM Modi’s J&K visit eve

Jan 13, 2025

JAMMU: Ahead of PM Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Monday to inaugurate the strategic Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal, security forces intensified a massive combing operation on Sunday to track down suspected terrorists reported near LoC in Akhnoor sector.

"The massive cordon and search operation by Army and police was launched on Saturday in Bhattal area after villagers reported suspicious movements of terrorists in Jogiwan forest area, raising concerns about potential terrorist infiltration," a source said.

All security formations in Doda have been put on "maximum alert" ahead of Republic Day, due to the presence of two groups of terrorists spotted in the higher reaches of the hilly district.

In Oct, a similar search operation in Akhnoor sector led to the elimination of three heavily armed terrorists affiliated with Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Senior Advocate Of Nigeria, Mahmud Adesina, Seeks Creation Of Sharia Court Of Appeal In Southwest

January 12, 2025

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mahmud Adesina, has called for the creation of Sharia Court of Appeal in southwest of states instead of Sharia Panel.

The legal luminary speaking over the weekend when he was turbaned as the Wazeerul Muslimeen of IfonOrolu community, Osun State which was graced by ex-Zamfara governor, Senator Ahmad Yerima and the former Osun governor, Rauf Aregbesola.

Adesina said: “We’ve heard alot of things about establishment of Sharia Panel in southwest states, I want to say that what we should agitate for is Sharia Court of Appeal in compliance totally with the provisions of Section 275,276 and 277 of the constitution of Nigeria.

“The constitution explicitly provides for this by using the word ‘shall.’ While some states have Sharia panels to resolve disputes among Muslims, they lack enforcement powers. Such enforcement can only be achieved through the establishment of Sharia Courts of Appeal, as already outlined in our constitution.”

Earlier, the erstwhile Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola discouraged Yoruba traditional monarchs against practising one religion.

He said: “Kings in Yorubaland don’t adhere to a single religion. No Yoruba king can be exclusively Muslim, Christian, or traditionalist. Unless the monarch is not truly Yoruba.

“A Yoruba monarch must participate in all religious practices. Whether it’s the Egungun festival, Islamic prayers, or Christian celebrations, you must be involved. That’s how Almighty God created the Yoruba people.”

Buhari Is A Hardliner, Tinubu Will Forgive NnamdiKanu – Arthur Eze

13 January 2025

By UdezeEkene

South-East billionaire businessman, Arthur Eze, has said President Bola Tinubu would listen to the voice of Ndigbo and release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), NnamdiKanu.

Eze said President Tinubu cares for the region. He stated that most of the concerns of the region on marginalization would be addressed in the current regime.

In an interview with AIT, posted on Sunday, Chief Eze noted that the President was already showing love for Ndigbo even though his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost the region in 2023 general election.

According to him, Kanu‘s detention, after much plea, was because of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s disposition.

“Kanu was detained by Muhammadu Buhari, not Tinubu. Buhari is a hardliner. But we shall appeal to Tinubu to forgive him. He has the spirit of forgiveness. He has no enemy,” he said.

He further commended the President for establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

He explained that the Commission would address some of the challenges of the region.

“We need to thank the President for his concerns towards addressing the infrastructure gaps in the South-East region. We have to thank Tinubu for establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

“Remember we have clamoured for this Commission since the end of the Nigeria/Biafra war without success. It is only Tinubu that has demonstrated his love for us by establishing this Commission. That Commission will solve our problem.

“The Managing Director of the Commission is Mike Okoye from Ukpo, Dunukofia Anambra State. There were appointments from Imo, Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi states, changing Igbo lives. Very soon, many youths will start getting jobs and it will go a long way to address the security challenges we have in the region,” he added.

Naija News reported that OhanaezeNdigbo, political, religious and traditional leaders of the region have demanded that President Tinubu release the IPOB leader, Kanu.

The leaders of the region believed that Kanu’s release would help to address insecurity challenges in the region.

It’s Shame To Nigeria That People Died Because Of Food – Archbishop Kaigama

13 January 2025

By UdezeEkene

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, has said it would be wrong to blame the church for the rice-sharing stampede that occurred in December 2024.

Naija News reported that 10 citizens died at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, on 21st December, in Maitama, Abuja, during Christmas palliative distribution.

He stated this while delivering his Homily at a Special Memorial Church Service in honour of the stampede victims, on Sunday.

Kaigama explained that it was heightened economic hardship caused by government policies that should be blamed for reducing the citizens’ human dignity.

He stressed that the Church was not negligent in the management of the crowds leading to the deaths of the victims.

“Certainly, due to the heightened economic hardship affecting many families in the country. It was never because we were negligent that they came. It was because they were hungry that they came.

“Their hunger is not the fault of the Catholic Church. If you are looking for a culprit, please cast your eyes elsewhere. Certainly not the Catholic Church,” he said.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja noted that no Nigeria ought to struggle for what to eat. He called on government to work out policies that would address biting hardship in the country.

“No one, I repeat, no one should be allowed to die a needless death just struggling for what to eat. Is it not shameful that we shall say in the future and in history that people died here simply struggling for what to eat?

“Is it not a shame to the nation? And when the international community hears about it, they also wonder what is happening to Nigeria with our huge and vast human and natural resources,” he added.

‘Your Economic Team Not Proactive, They Are Not Sharp Enough’ – Adebayo Hits Tinubu

12 January 202

By OladipoAbiola

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has called for an overhaul of President Bola Tinubu’s economic team.

Adebayo said the President’s economic team is not proactive and only reacting to the consequences of their wrong actions.

The former SDP candidate, who spoke on Sunday during an appearance on Channels Television, said President Tinubu can still easily get better hands within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He lamented that despite the funds available to the government as a result of fuel subsidy removal, the administration of President Tinubu still has to borrow to finance the 2025 budget.

“The problem is that the way he has set up his economic team, there is no sign that they are proactive, they are only reacting to the consequences of their earlier actions. So, they are perpetually defending, perpetually behind. So, the economic team is not nimble enough, it’s not sharp enough.

“Even if he doesn’t go outside his party to look for people to run his economic team, within his party he has a lot of talents there within the rubric of their own belief. He has not even used the best of APC people,” Adebayo said.

Naija News reports the politician also urged President Tinubu to start taking responsibility, get to work and stop blaming past governments.

NAF Denies Civilian Deaths In Zamfara Airstrike, Labels Reports As Propaganda

12 January 2025

By EnioluwaAdeniyi

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dismissed allegations that 16 civilians were killed during an airstrike targeting insurgents in Tungar Kara, Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Naija News understands that the airstrike, conducted on January 10 under Operation FansanYamma, aimed to tackle banditry in the region.

Reports from the community alleged that 16 residents, including members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG) and vigilantes, were mistakenly killed during the operation.

Counter-insurgency publication, ZagazolaMakama, cited intelligence sources suggesting the vigilantes were misidentified as bandits after gunmen fled the area.

“So far, 16 dead bodies have been retrieved, but the total number of casualties is not yet clear,” the publication reported.

Responding to the allegations, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore OlusolaAkinboyewa in a chat with The Cable denied any credible evidence of civilian casualties.

He emphasized that the operation was conducted based on reliable intelligence and adhered to strict measures to minimize harm to civilians.

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operations against bandits, terrorists, and other similar threats are conducted based on credible, reliable intel drawn from multiple verifiable sources and subject to further confirmatory analysis,” Akinboyewa said.

He further dismissed the claims as propaganda, suggesting they could be attempts by terrorists and their sympathizers to discredit the military.

“As of date, we have not received any credible reports of civilian casualties being involved in this instance. As events unfold, members of the public would be kept informed as might become necessary,” he added.

The airstrikes were part of a coordinated air-ground assault aimed at repelling bandit attacks in Zamfara villages. Akinboyewa assured the public that the NAF employs rigorous measures to prevent civilian harm during operations.

“Every possible measure is taken to prevent, minimize, and mitigate harm to civilians in the conduct of operations,” he stated.

OsitaOkechukwu Accuses PET Of Sabotaging Tinubu’s Govt

12 January 2025

By UdezeEkene

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), OsitaOkechukwu, has called on the Presidential Economic Team (PET) to be fair to Nigerians amid hardship affecting citizens.

Okechukwu decried that some members of the PET could not give full details of revenues the country was getting from the removed fuel subsidy.

Naija News reported on Friday that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating of the Economy, Wale Edun, along with the Minister of Budget and National Planning, AtikuBagudu, demanded a closed-door session when grilled about revenue from removed fuel subsidy during the National Assembly Joint Committee on Budget and Finance meeting.

In an open letter on Sunday, the former Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) accused the economic team of derailing the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu.

“May I humbly appeal via this Open Letter and earnestly urge the Presidential Economic Team to patriotically consider the gruesome economic hardship in the land, so as to stop derailing President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda meant to uplift millions out of poverty.

“Am making this humble appeal because am not the only foundation member of the APC who wants our great party to succeed; albeit many do not want our great to go into 2027 general elections limping in the midst of widespread discontent, despondency and despair.

“Secondly, one sincerely thinks that President Tinubu means well and wants to successfully consolidate the neoliberal capitalist system by taking bold decisions to bolster economic resorgimento in Nigeria via his Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Luckily for us Nigerians, President Tinubu has harvested the fine tenets of classical Non-Alignment-Doctrine; consequent upon his cordial diplomatic relationship with the West and the East.

“Hence Mr President in spite of the economic hardship and gross inequality has mobilised all the necessary international powers to utilise our demographic youth advantage in an aging world to consolidate the CHANGE our great party APC pledged in July 2013,” he said.

Even Abacha Used Fuel Subsidy Money To Help Citizens

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain called on the economic team to work towards alleviating the country’s hardships.

He noted that under the Late General Sani Abacha’s regime, revenue generated from the removal of fuel subsidies was managed with accountability.

It continued, “This is why am appealing to the Presidential Economic Team to reverse their gear and listen to Albeit Einstein’s admonition; that it’s illogical doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Therefore let’s assist Mr President to succeed and pull out of this adverse economic condition so that Nigerians can breathe.

“Accordingly, this why as a roadside political economist am crying out in pain over the inadvertent derailing of the Renewed Hope Agenda. For am yet to reconcile how the program could be successfully executed when only 25% of the 2024 Capital Budget was released; moreover when we are regrettably operating multi-budgets.

“Paradoxically the derailing is going on despite huge debts, increased tariffs, excessive taxation and the fact that all revenue generating agencies – NNPC, Nigeria Customs, FIRS had exceeded their 2024 targets – N13.1trillion vs N12.3trillion, N5.352trillion vs N5.09trillion and N5.7trillion vs N4.0trillion respectively.

“One recalls with nostalgia President Tinubu’s July 2023 profound broadcast statement on why he removed the fuel subsidy, quote interalia, ‘To be blunt, Nigeria could never become the society it was intended to be as long as such small, powerful yet unelected groups hold enormous influence over our political economy and the institutions that govern it:

“The whims of the few should never hold dominant sway over the hopes and aspirations of the many. If we are to be a democracy, the people and not the power of money must be sovereign.

“This group had amassed so much wealth and power that they became a serious threat to the fairness of our economy and the integrity of our democratic governance.

“Is it not the same train of absurd Mr President frowned at that the Presidential Economic Team is boarding by not instantly and publicly disclosing how much that accrued from Fuel Subsidy removal; when the Joint Appropriation, Budget and Finance Committees of the National Assembly demanded it last week?

“The Presidential Economic Team, should kindly remember that even the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha diligently utilsed monies which accrued from his fuel subsidy removal with social and physical infrastructure via the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), which was beneficial to Nigerians.

“My humble submission is that the Presidential Economic Team should not forget that Mr President’s statement above presupposes that he wants to seamlessly win the 2027 presidential election and end up 2nd Term as a progressive statesman.”

New Lebanon president starts consultations on naming PM

January 13, 2025

BEIRUT, Lebanon: New Lebanese President Joseph Aoun will begin parliamentary consultations Monday over designating a prime minister to form a government that will have to face major challenges in the crisis-hit country.

The consultations, a constitutional requirement under Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system, come just days after Aoun’s election amid foreign pressure for swift progress — particularly from the United States and Saudi Arabia.

The small Mediterranean nation had been without a president since October 2022, run by a caretaker government despite a crushing economic crisis and a war between Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and Israel.

Names floated for the post of prime minster, which is reserved for a Sunni Muslim, include current caretaker premier Najib Mikati, anti-Hezbollah lawmaker Fouad Makhzoumi, and Nawaf Salam, presiding judge at the International Court of Justice in the Hague.

Aoun’s consultations with political blocs begin at 8:00 am (0600 GMT) with a meeting with powerful parliament speaker and Hezbollah ally Nabih Berri.

A source close to Hezbollah told AFP that both the group and Berri’s Amal movement supported Mikati.

The incumbent’s re-designation is “part of the accord reached with the Saudi envoy to Lebanon... that led Hezbollah and Amal to vote for Aoun as president” last week, the source said on condition of anonymity as the matter is sensitive.

Saudi Arabia and the United States were among key countries driving diplomatic efforts to end the presidential vacuum.

Riyadh has restored its interest in Lebanon’s political scene after years of distancing itself in protest at the influence of the Iran-backed Hezbollah, which was heavily weakened in its latest devastating war with Israel.

Mikati, who has already formed three governments and has good relations with Lebanon’s political parties and several foreign countries, has denied any such prior arrangement exists.

One of the country’s richest men, Mikati has headed the country in a caretaker capacity throughout the presidential vacuum.

Mikati said on the sidelines of the presidential vote on Thursday that he was ready to serve the country “if needed.”

Whoever heads Lebanon’s new government will face major challenges, including implementing reforms to satisfy international donors amid the grinding five-year economic crisis.

They will also face the daunting task of reconstructing swathes of the country after the Israel-Hezbollah war and implementing the November 27 ceasefire agreement, which includes the thorny issue of disarming Hezbollah.

Opposition lawmakers from a grouping that includes the Christian party Lebanese Forces (LF) and smaller blocs announced on Saturday they would nominate Makhzoumi, a wealthy businessman who has good ties with Gulf countries and Washington.

US envoy Amos Hochstein visited Makhzoumi’s home last week for a meeting with opposition lawmakers as part of a trip to Lebanon.

Other lawmakers have instead proposed International Court of Justice judge Salam, a highly respected former ambassador whose name frequently comes up in such consultations.

Late Sunday saw last-ditch attempts to unify opposition and independent positions, with the aim of rallying around Salam and blocking Mikati’s path to the premiership.

Hezbollah’s opponents see Mikati as part of an old political system that the militant group has within its grip.

After Aoun pledged a “new phase” for Lebanon in his inaugural speech, LF leader Samir Geagea said that “like it or not, Mikati was from the previous lot.”

According to Lebanon’s constitution, the president designates the prime minister in consultation with the parliament speaker, choosing the candidate with the most votes during the consultations.

Nominating a premier does not guarantee a new government will be formed imminently.

The process has previously taken weeks or even months due to deep political divisions and horse-trading.

Israel says strikes Hezbollah sites, Lebanon-Syria border smuggling routes

January 13, 2025

BEIRUT, Lebanon: Israel carried out air strikes in Lebanon Sunday, targeting areas in the east and south according to Lebanese state media, with the Israeli military saying it hit Hezbollah targets including smuggling routes along the border with Syria.

The air strikes placed further strain on a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group, which came into effect on November 27.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said Israeli aircraft targeted the outskirts of Janta in the eastern Baalbek region as well as areas near Nabatieh in the south. It did not say whether there were casualties.

The Israeli military said it struck a number of targets it had presented to ceasefire monitors as threats.

“Among the targets struck were a rocket launcher site, a military site, and routes along the Syria-Lebanon border used to smuggle weapons to Hezbollah,” it said.

The strikes come just two weeks before the January 26 deadline for implementing the November ceasefire, which both sides have accused the other of violating.

The Israeli military statement said it was operating “in accordance with the ceasefire understandings.”

Under the terms of the deal, Hezbollah is to dismantle its remaining military infrastructure in the south and pull its forces back north of the Litani River, around 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon this month accused Israel of a “flagrant violation” of the Security Council resolution which forms the basis of the ceasefire.

Israeli strikes in south Lebanon killed five people on Friday, according to the Lebanese health ministry, with the Israeli military saying it targeted a Hezbollah weapons truck.

Israel to use withheld Palestinian tax income to pay debt to state-run electric company

January 12, 2025

JERUSALEM: Israel plans to use tax revenue it collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority to pay the PA’s nearly 2 billion shekel ($544 million) debt to state-run Israel Electric Co. (IEC), the far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Sunday.

Israel collects tax on goods that pass through Israel into the occupied West Bank on behalf of the PA and transfers the revenue to Ramallah under a longstanding arrangement between the two sides.

Since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Smotrich has withheld sums earmarked for administration expenses in the Gaza Strip.

Those frozen funds are held in Norway and, he said at Sunday’s cabinet meeting, would instead be used to pay debt owed to the IEC of 1.9 billion shekels.

“The procedure was implemented after several anti-Israeli actions and included Norway’s unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state,” Smotrich told cabinet ministers.

“The PA’s debt to IEC resulted in high loans and interest rates, as well as damage to IEC’s credit, which were ultimately rolled over to the citizens of Israel.”

The ultranationalist Smotrich has been opposed to sending funds to the PA, which uses the money to pay public sector wages.

Israel also deducts funds equal to the total amount of so-called martyr payments, which the PA pays to families of militants and civilians killed or imprisoned by Israeli authorities.

King of Jordan meets Vatican secretary of state in Amman

January 12, 2025

LONDON: King Abdullah of Jordan welcomed Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, at Al-Husseiniya Palace in Amman on Sunday.

King Abdullah sent his greetings to Pope Francis during a meeting attended by several senior royal advisers and aides. Cardinal Parolin thanked King Abdullah for his support and patronage of the Christian communities in Jordan.

The Jordanian king praised the pope’s support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who since late 2023 have suffered the effects of an Israeli military campaign.

They agreed on the need to stop Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip, and increase the flow of humanitarian aid. They also warned of aggressive Israeli policies in occupied East Jerusalem and its effect on the Islamic and Christian holy sites, the Petra news agency reported.

Parolin on Friday attended the inauguration of the Church of John the Baptist on the east bank of the Jordan River.

A clarion call for police reform

 Jan 13, 2025

The relationship between the police and public deteriorated significantly during the July uprising in Bangladesh, as many viewed the police as enforcers of political repression rather than protectors of public safety. This troubling dynamic has created a deep mistrust that complicates any attempts at meaningful engagement between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

A recent survey conducted by Dhaka University's Department of Development Studies revealed that 40% of university-level students reported experiencing bribery or harassment while seeking police services. These statistics underscore a pressing issue within the nation's policing system, characterised by a lack of accountability and rampant corruption.

The study, which included over 2,000 respondents, paints a troubling picture of a police force perceived more as a political tool than a public service. With only 10.5% of participants indicating they received smooth police services; it becomes clear that trust in law enforcement is severely compromised. The report highlights that 37.9% of students faced harassment, while 31.2% resorted to bribes or political influence to obtain necessary services. Such revelations not only question the integrity of the police force but also illuminate a system in dire need of reform.

Students have accused the police of often neglecting complaints against powerful political figures, further reinforcing the belief that law enforcement operates under political influence rather than adhering to principles of justice and fairness. This situation calls for urgent reforms to restore faith in the police and ensure they operate independently of political pressures.

According to the report titled, "Seeking police services: 38% faced harassment, 31% paid bribes" (published on January 13), participants voiced their concerns and proposed actionable reforms. Approximately 70% of respondents advocated for establishing laws to protect police from political interference. This sentiment reflects a growing desire among citizens for a policing system prioritising accountability and professionalism over political loyalty.

Moreover, a significant 80% of respondents called for the creation of an independent police commission tasked with overseeing recruitment processes and ensuring that police conduct aligns with ethical standards. This proposal indicates a recognition of the need for systemic changes in how police officers are selected, trained, and held accountable.

The recommendations from this study also highlight the importance of transparency and community engagement. Calls for anonymous complaint centers, regular updates on investigations, and increased police interaction with citizens suggest a shift towards a more participatory policing model. This approach could help bridge the gap between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The students' voices, as reflected in this study, are a clarion call for change that cannot be ignored. It is time for the authorities to act decisively and implement the reforms needed to ensure a just and equitable policing system.

45 Afghan prisoners released from Pakistani jails

ByFidel Rahmati

January 13, 2025

The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation announced that 45 Afghan citizens detained in Pakistani prisons for lacking legal documents have been released.

The ministry reported on Monday, January 13, that these individuals were freed as part of ongoing efforts to secure the release of Afghan detainees in Pakistan. They returned to Afghanistan the same day.

According to officials at the Torkham border, the detainees were arrested in various parts of Pakistan for not possessing legal documents. They had been held at the Haji Camp prison for periods ranging from three to fifteen days.

Humanitarian aid was provided to the freed individuals upon their return to Afghanistan, facilitated by partner organizations working with the ministry.

Recently, Pakistan has intensified house-to-house searches to identify, detain, and deport Afghan migrants, a move that has sparked widespread criticism and concern.

Notably, among those detained are individuals holding temporary registration documents issued by SHARP/UNHCR, raising additional concerns about the scope and fairness of the crackdown.

The increasing arrests and deportations of Afghan migrants reflect rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. These measures, coupled with the inclusion of legally registered migrants, have drawn criticism from human rights organizations and the international community.

Efforts to secure the release and safe return of detained Afghan migrants must continue, while both countries need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation to address the challenges facing Afghan refugees and ensure their rights are upheld.

Nine terrorists killed in two North Waziristan IBOs: ISPR

January 12, 2025

Nine terrorists have been killed and two others arrested by security forces in two separate engagements in Dosalli and Esham areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's North Waziristan district, Inter-Services Public Relations said on Sunday.

The intelligence-based operations (IBOs) were conducted by the security forces on January 11 on the reported presence of terrorists in the areas.

The first IBO was conducted in the tribal district's general area Dosalli in which troops effectively engaged the terrorists' location and resultantly, six terrorists were killed and two others were apprehended.

Subsequently, three terrorists were neutralised by security forces after an intense fire exchange in the Esham area. Two terrorists were also wounded in the gunbattle, the military's media wing said.

It added that weapons and ammunition were also recovered from killed terrorists, who remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against the security forces as well as target killing of innocent civilians.

"Sanitisation operations are being conducted to eliminate any other kharji [terrorists] found in the area, as security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country," it concluded.

The nation has been reeling under rising violent attacks since the Taliban rulers returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in the bordering provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The year 2024 turned out to be the deadliest for Pakistan’s civil and military security forces in a decade with at least 685 fatalities and 444 terror attacks, according to “CRSS Annual Security Report 2024” issued by the Centre for Security and Strategic Studies.

Equally alarming were the cumulative losses of civilians and security personnel, ie, 1,612 fatalities, accounting for over 63% of the total recorded this year, marking 73% more losses compared to 934 outlaws eliminated, The News reported citing CRSS report.

The overall fatalities recorded the previous year were a record 9-year high and over 66% more than in 2023. On average, nearly seven people lost their lives daily, with November emerging as the deadliest month across all metrics, compared to all other months of the year.

The violence took the heaviest toll on KP which topped in human losses with 1,616 fatalities, followed by Balochistan with 782 fatalities. In 2024, the country suffered 2,546 violence-linked fatalities and 2,267 injuries among civilians, security personnel and outlaws.

This tally of casualties stemmed from 1,166 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations, marking a grim year for the country’s security landscape.

PM, President hail troops

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed officers and soldiers of the security forces for a successful operation carried out against terrorists in North Waziristan.

In a laudatory message, the premier paid glowing tribute to the security forces, saying the war would continue till the complete annihilation of the demon of terrorism from the country.

He said the armed forces stand as an iron wall in defence of the country against terrorists, adding that the people of Pakistan stand shoulder to shoulder with the security forces.

PM Shehbaz said the officers and jawans were serving the country steadfastly day and night. The whole nation pays rich tribute to its valiant armed forces, he concluded.

President Asif Ali Zardari also praised the security forces for the successful operations against terrorists and expressed commitment to eliminate terrorism from the country.

He added that the entire nation stands united against terrorism and actions would be continued to uproot the menace.

Govt announces opening of new border crossing with Iran

Saleem Shahid

January 13, 2025

QUETTA: The federal government has announced the opening of a new crossing point at the Pakistan-Iran border in Panjgur, in collaboration with Iran, to facilitate legal trade activities between the two countries, discourage smuggling of goods and provide employment and business opportunities to the people living on both sides of the border of the two countries.

The new trade route in the KohakCheedgi area will boost business activities in Panjgur area of Balochistan.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has notified the opening of the fourth official border crossing point between Pakistan and Iran at KohakCheedgi area of Panjgur.

A letter, signed by Secretary of Transit and Border Trade Zubair Shah, directed the Collectorate of Customs in Gwadar to take necessary steps in KohakCheedgi area of Panjgur border crossing point and coordinate with other stakeholders and departments concerned to ensure required infrastructure development in the area immediately.

A progress report should also be submitted in this regard, the FBR letter said.

The federal government move to open the new border crossing at Pak-Iran border in KohakCheedgi to facilitate legal trade activities was welcomed the business community of Balochistan.

The Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Mohammad Ayub Mirani, Senior Vice President Haji Akhtar Kakar and other QCCI leaders have welcomed the new border crossing

They said the establishment of this crossing point had been a long-standing demand of businessmen in Balochistan and efforts had been made at various forums for opening of this border crossing to boost-up trade activities.

With the issuance of the federal government’s notification for the opening of this new trade route, formal trade between the two countries will now commence, providing employment opportunities to local people and boosting up business activities.

Additionally, the new border crossing opening will facilitate businessmen involved in legal import and export business and discourage the smuggling of goods between the two countries.

In December, Pakistan and Iran inaugurated the Gabd-Rimdan border crossing to increase trade and people-to-people exchanges.

The border crossing point between Rimdan in Iran’s southeastern Sistan province and Gabd in Pakistan’s Balochistan province is located about 120km from the Iranian port of Chabahar and 70km from Gwadar port.

On the occasion, the Foreign Office had explained that the purpose of this Gabd-Rimdan and other proposed border crossing points was to enhance ‘people-to-people contacts’ and facilitate travel and trade between the two countries.

“Opening of Gabd-Rimdan crossing point had been under discussion between Pakistan and Iran at various levels,” the FO had stated.

1MDB Trial: No Need To Declare King Abdullah’s Donations To Cabinet If PM’s Integrity Unaffected, Says Najib

By Ida Lim

13 Jan 2025

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 13 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak today insisted that he as the prime minister was allowed to receive gifts as long as it does not affect his integrity, denying that it was ethically wrong for him to have accepted billions of ringgit which he claims were Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah’s “donations”.

Today, when testifying in his own defence in the trial over RM2 billion of 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s (1MDB) funds that were alleged to have entered his personal AmIslamic bank accounts, Najib continued to insist that the money came from Saudi donations instead.

Under cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Kamal Baharin Omar, Najib disagreed that he had the responsibility to declare to his Cabinet that he had received the purported donations from King Abdullah in his personal AmIslamic bank accounts.

Najib denied that he had never informed his Cabinet about the alleged donations, saying that he did tell his Cabinet “in general” that King Abdullah would provide support, but said he did not say so in detail.

Najib explained the reason he did not tell his Cabinet in detail was because “this is a personal donation, although it is for CSR purposes and to support my leadership, but it is given personally.”

Najib said he had as prime minister only informed his Cabinet once about the alleged “support” from King Abdullah, instead of each time the money came into his personal bank accounts.

Kamal Baharin then showed Najib two sets of the Malaysian government’s Code of Ethics for Members of the Administration.

The first set of Code of Ethics was dated 1997, while the newer version did not have a date. Najib said he was generally familiar with the first set, confirming that it also applied to him when he was the prime minister and finance minister.

Najib served as prime minister from April 2009 to May 2018 and as finance minister from September 2008 to May 2018.

Kamal Baharin read out from the Code of Ethics, with its item five stating that “members of the administration should avoid using their position for personal interests such as seeking or accepting any gifts, rewards or facilities that could affect their integrity”.

When asked if he agreed this meant that the prime minister cannot receive any gifts, Najib disagreed that it meant that a prime minister could not receive any gifts at all, highlighting that the Code of Ethics referred to gifts “that could affect integrity”.

“I don’t agree, if the gift causes us to make decisions, then only cannot,” Najib said, adding that the sentence should be read as a whole and not in isolation as it would be confusing.

Najib said gifts could be accepted if the gifts “do not affect our power, our position or our integrity”, stressing that there should not be a piecemeal approach to this code for ethical conduct.

Kamal Baharin: Based on this paragraph, when you received the purported donation from King Abdullah, you have to tell the Cabinet.

Najib: No.

Kamal Baharin read out another excerpt under item 8 (vi) of the same Code of Ethics, which stated that members of the Administration are prohibited to own sources of wealth or property that are disproportionate or cannot legitimately be expected to have been obtained by them through their emoluments or any legitimate personal income.

Kamal Baharin said this too meant that Najib could not accept the purported Saudi donation, but Najib disagreed as he said he did not receive it for personal purposes.

After showing the newer set of Code of Ethics that had the same wordings, Kamal Baharin then suggested the two Code of Ethics means Najib has to inform Cabinet about his receiving of money from King Abdullah. But Najib disagreed.

When asked if he remembered how many times he told the Cabinet about King Abdullah’s alleged support, Najib said he did not really remember and would check.

Najib was asked if he had informed his Cabinet before the 2013 election of the money that he had received as purported Saudi donations during 2011 to 2013, and if he had told his new Cabinet formed after the 2013 election of the additional money he received in 2014.

For both questions, Najib said he would check.

Among other things, Najib claimed that the alleged individual named “Saud Abdulaziz Majid Al Saud” — who purportedly wrote four letters promising donations to him — actually exists as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had gone to meet him.

Najib however confirmed he never met Saud and does not know how the latter is related to King Abdullah.

But Najib insisted that he believes Saud is a member of Saudi’s royal family, as the letters had used Saudi Arabia’s emblem and had stated “Al Saud” in Saud’s full name.

Najib said he knew the emblem cannot be used by ordinary citizens, and that Saudi Arabia’s history meant that only those of royal lineage belonging to the House of Saud could use the name “Al Saud”.

Najib disagreed that Saud’s letters were written in a personal tone and these letters did not represent Saudi Arabia or the Saudi royal family or King Abdullah, insisting that these letters were written on King Abdullah’s instructions and were not bogus letters.

Najib indicated it would not make sense for Saud to suddenly want to make personal donations — unless the donation came from King Abdullah — as both he and Saud did not know each other.

Najib’s 1MDB trial before judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah resumes tomorrow.

After PAS shows up in Najib’s corner, Hadi says party puts justice above punishment

By Malay Mail

13 Jan 2025

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 13 – PAS’s commitment to Islamic principles in governance meant it prioritises justice and forgiveness over deception and political expediency, party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said.

In a statement, Hadi said this was why the Islamist party took up advocating for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the matter of a purported royal addendum for the latter to be placed under house arrest.

He drew comparisons to the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) leadership during the conquest of Mecca, highlighting a precedent for full forgiveness and the reduction of punishments.

Citing several Quranic verses, Abdul Hadi urged PAS members to remain steadfast in their principles, even when dealing with adversaries or harsh criticism.

“The actions of PAS leaders and members in championing issues to present Islam as an example for all, even towards those who have long opposed PAS, demonstrate the party’s enduring commitment. PAS does not act like a fleeting rainstorm that erases the heat of a long-standing drought,” he said.

“The concept of justice for all and prioritizing forgiveness has allowed Islamic principles to triumph over colonizers who were wealthier and more powerful.”

He argued that unity among Malay Muslims under Islamic values is crucial, not only for national harmony but also for ensuring fairness for all citizens.

Hadi said PAS adhered to the Quran and Sunnah as its guiding principles, even in the face of opposition, as part of its mission for equitable and compassionate leadership.

PAS leaders turned out for a rally to show solidarity with Najib last week, notwithstanding remarks from Istana Negara and the police cautioning against the gathering.

Whether you are looking for an immersive Wild West experience, serene luxury surrounded by nature, or retro charm under the stars, the capital offers a diverse tapestry of escapes.

Locals and tourists alike are drawn to Southwest Village, The Groves, Dakkah Winter, and the retro-styled Ammariyah Motel, each providing a distinct blend of entertainment, relaxation, and culture.

On the outskirts of Riyadh lies Southwest Village, a meticulously designed attraction that brings the American Wild West to life. Wooden storefronts reminiscent of 19th-century frontier towns line the streets, while horse-drawn carriages and cowboy-clad performers transport visitors back in time.

From families with children to history buffs, the village has something for everyone. The centerpiece of the village is its 6D Cowboy Theater, where interactive shows captivate audiences of all ages.

Guests find themselves immersed in the drama and adventure of the Wild West, with state-of-the-art effects that bring every scene to life. “It’s like being part of a movie,” says Salem Al-Qahtani, a frequent visitor. “The energy, the performances, and the attention to detail are outstanding.”

By night, the village comes alive with the glow of warm lights illuminating its bustling Route 66-inspired street. Visitors can explore food stalls serving hearty barbecue dishes, shop for souvenirs in rustic boutiques, or simply take in the atmosphere.

Children can run through haystack play areas while their parents enjoy an evening of live performances and cowboy-themed music.

For those seeking a more sophisticated escape, The Groves in Al-Rafiah offers a tranquil yet luxurious retreat. Nestled among lush greenery and centered around the serene Groves Lake, this destination combines fine dining, boutique shopping, and carefully curated entertainment to create a memorable experience.

At the heart of The Groves is its iconic bridge, leading visitors to a 360-degree stage that regularly hosts live performances. The soft glow of lights reflected on the lake adds a touch of romance, making it a favorite among couples and families alike.

“We came for the performances, but it’s the atmosphere that keeps us here,” said Rania Banaser, who visited with her family. “Every corner feels like it’s been designed for relaxation and beauty.”

Culinary offerings at The Groves are varied: from Vida Vera’s fusion of Italian and Japanese flavors to Hawanem’s Middle Eastern-inspired dishes, every meal is an experience in itself.

For pet owners, the Luca Park dog area provides a safe space for the animals to play. “It’s rare to find a place that caters to everyone, including pets,” said Banaser.

Dakkah Winter has quickly become a favorite among families looking for a relaxing yet engaging destination. With its softly lit palm trees, boutique shops, and cozy food stalls, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

One of the most praised aspects of Dakkah Winter is the thoughtfully designed seating arrangements. Guests can choose between open-air settings under the starry skies or private tents surrounded by the warmth of fire pits, making it a perfect spot for intimate gatherings.

Families often gather around the crackling firewood, enjoying the serene environment and the crisp winter air.

“I think this place is really nice. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a place like this,” said Malak Hassan. “The price range is really good because it's not a typical spot where you can hang out. You can come with family and friends and it’s such an enjoyable place.”

Parents can unwind over a cup of steaming Arabic coffee while children enjoy the supervised play area, designed to keep them entertained for hours.

Sabah Al-Qahtani, one of the visitors, said: “I was surprised by the location. I liked the entrance and the sitting area and everything is amazing and I will definitely come again.”

For a dose of nostalgia mixed with adventure, Ammariyah Motel is the place to go. With its vibrant orange and red hues and 1950s-inspired decor, the motel offers visitors an engaging escape from the ordinary.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by retro signage and colorful seating areas, setting the stage for an evening of fun. The activities at Ammariyah Motel cater to both the adventurous and the more relaxed.

Guests can test their skills at paddle tennis, or simply sit back under the stars. Dining is a highlight, with the pizza bar serving freshly baked pizzas and the outdoor grill offering gourmet burgers that draw praise from visitors.

From the immersive Wild West charm of Southwest Village to the upscale elegance of The Groves, the cozy retreat of Dakkah Winter, and the retro-inspired fun at Ammariyah Motel, a unique experience that captures the spirit of the season is offered to those visiting.

Revving up history: Saudi Arabia’s Hail festival spotlights classic cars, cultural charm

January 12, 2025

RIYADH: A display of vintage and classic automobiles, some made more than 60 years ago, was a major draw for visitors at the Handicrafts Festival in Hail.

Visitors and car enthusiasts from the Kingdom and abroad gathered to admire the eye-catching vehicles, Saudi Press Agency reported.

The meticulously maintained cars, including several GMC and Chevrolet models, are their owners’ prized possessions, and offer a glimpse into the past.

Naif Amim Al-Janfawi, a collector of vintage cars, said: “The festival provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase these treasures.”

The festival also immersed visitors in the rich heritage of the Hail region, showcasing traditional food, clothing, and customs, while also featuring a variety of cultural performances and folk arts from within and beyond the area.

A pavilion housing wooden doors and gypsum carvings proved to be a popular attraction that showcased the craftsmanship involved in creating the traditional works.

Inspired by Saudi Vision 2030 and the designation of 2025 as the “Year of Handicrafts,” the festival celebrated traditional skills, and highlighted their cultural and economic significance.

Craftsman Abdullah Al-Khazam said that creating wooden doors and carvings, including those of old Hail houses made from tamarisk and other timbers, demanded exceptional skill and attention to detail.

The pavilion also featured Islamic plaster engravings inspired by the local environment, a hallmark of Najdi architecture used to adorn buildings, entrances, and majlis, or council rooms.

Also on display were drawings and engravings from ancient clay houses, including Qur’anic verses, sayings, decorative patterns, and depictions of trees and plants.

Turtles help scientists discover hidden seagrass meadows in Red Sea

January 12, 2025

RIYADH: Scientists have discovered 34 previously unknown seagrass meadows in the Red Sea by tracking the foraging behavior of green turtles.

The findings were revealed in a study published by researchers from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the Queensland Government in Australia.

This study highlights the benefits of observing turtles to map marine ecosystems critical for carbon capture and economic sustainability, offering valuable data for developing sustainability policies for the Red Sea region, according to a statement from KAUST.

Seagrass, along with mangroves and salt marshes, plays a vital role in absorbing “blue carbon” — carbon stored by coastal vegetation — at rates more efficient than rainforests.

Despite this, it is estimated that only 10 percent of global seagrass areas have been identified, as satellite-based surveys, though effective in shallow areas, fall short in accuracy for deeper regions.

By tagging 53 green turtles in the Red Sea, scientists were able to track their natural foraging paths, which led to the discovery of these previously hidden seagrass meadows.

This expanded the mapped seagrass coverage in the region by nearly 15 percent. Remarkably, the turtles proved to be about 20 times more accurate in identifying seagrass areas than the widely used Allen Coral Atlas, especially in deeper waters.

Green turtles also offer a more cost-effective approach to mapping marine vegetation.

According to Prof. Carlos Duarte, Ibn Sina Distinguished Professor at KAUST and lead researcher on the study, traditional methods such as aerial surveys with hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors cost tens of millions of dollars, whereas tagging turtles costs less than 1 percent of that amount.

“Countries need reliable, accurate data to make good policies for environmental protection, which also safeguards their economies. Our study provides crucial data for the Red Sea and supports the conservation strategies and blue carbon programs of the countries along its coasts,” Duarte said in a statement.

PM plans to 'unleash AI' across UK to boost growth

JANUARY 13, 2025

The government is to set out plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) across the UK to boost growth and deliver public services more efficiently.

The AI Opportunities Action Plan being announced on Monday will be backed by leading tech firms, which are said to have committed £14bn towards various projects, creating 13,250 jobs.

It includes plans for growth zones where development will be focused, and the technology will be used to help tackle issues such as potholes.

"I want to make sure that it benefits everyone from every background, that it benefits every community, from every part of the UK," Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle told the BBC.

Last summer, the government tasked AI advisor Matt Clifford with creating a UK action plan for artificial intelligence.

He came back with 50 recommendations and all of them are now being implemented.

One of these is for the UK to invest in a new supercomputer to boost computing power. This marks a change in strategy as the Labour government had ditched a supercomputer at Edinburgh University planned by the previous government.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said AI "will drive incredible change" in the country and "has the potential to transform the lives of working people".

"Our plan will make Britain the world leader," Sir Keir said.

Kyle told the BBC there was no reason why the UK could not create tech companies on the same scale as Google, Amazon, and Apple.

"At the moment, we don't have any frontier conceptual, cutting-edge companies that are British-owned. We have DeepMind, which started in Britain but is now American-owned," he said.

"Now we want to keep all of those ingredients that enable that kind of scale of innovation and investment to exist in Britain."

DeepMind created technology enabling computers to play video and board games.

It was founded by three students at University College London before being acquired by Google.

Using figures from the International Monetary Fund, the government estimates that fully embracing AI could be worth up to an average £47bn to the UK each year over a decade.

How the AI plan could affect you

AI will be used by the public sector to enable its workers to spend less time doing admin and more time delivering services.

Several "AI Growth Zones" around the UK will be created, involving big building projects and new jobs.

AI will be fed through cameras around the country to inspect roads and spot potholes that need fixing.

Teachers and small business owners were highlighted as two groups that could start using AI for things like faster planning and record-keeping.

AI is already being used in UK hospitals for important tasks such as diagnosing cancer more quickly and it will continue to be used to support the NHS.

Tech companies Vantage Data Centres, Nscale, and Kyndryl have committed £14bn to build the relevant AI infrastructure in the UK.

This is in addition to the £25bn AI investment announced at the International Investment Summit.

Vantage Data Centres is working on building one of Europe's largest data centre campuses in Wales.

Kyndryl will create up to 1,000 AI-related jobs in Liverpool over the next three years, forming a new tech hub.

Nscale has signed a contract to build an AI data centre in Loughton, Essex, by 2026.

The government says "AI Growth Zones" will be set up across the UK, with speedy planning proposals in place to create new infrastructure.

The first of these will be in Culham, Oxfordshire and more will be announced this summer with a focus on de-industrialised areas.

"I want to find parts of the country where there is a real need for the jobs of the future because the jobs of the past have already started to dwindle and utilise the fact that there is often very good grid connections in those areas which can supply an excess of energy currently," Kyle said.

Other parts of the plan include a new National Data Library to safely secure public data and an AI Energy Council led by Kyle and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband which will focus on the energy demands of the technology.

The Conservatives said the government's plans "will not support the UK to become a tech and science superpower".

Accusing them of cutting £1.3bn in funding for "Britain's first next-generation supercomputer and AI research", shadow science secretary Alan Mak said Labour was "delivering analogue government in a digital age".

"AI does have the potential to transform public services, but Labour's economic mismanagement and uninspiring plan will mean Britain is left behind," he added.

But Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: "AI is a powerful tool that will help grow our economy, make our public services more efficient and open up new opportunities to help improve living standards."

Croatian president re-elected in landslide victory

JANUARY 13, 2025

Voters in Croatia have re-elected Zoran Milanovic to a second term, after he won almost three-quarters of votes cast in the country's presidential election.

It was a dismal result for his opponent Dragan Primorac, who had the backing of the governing centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.

Primorac picked up 25 percent of the vote – the worst-ever result for Croatia's most powerful political force.

The outcome was met with a muted response from Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

He declined to congratulate the winner and insisted that "Milanovic offers nothing".

Milanovic said he would "offer a hand" to the prime minister.

Presidents in Croatia fulfil a largely ceremonial role - the constitution insists they must not be a party-political figure, but act as the head of state for all citizens.

Milanovic has been a frequent critic of the governing party on issues including corruption, inflation and healthcare.

While he condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he has also frequently criticised the West's military support for Kyiv.

Before becoming president, Milanovic was prime minister of Croatia from 2011 to 2016, and led the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) from 2007 to 2016.

He briefly inserted himself into the country's parliamentary elections last year by announcing he'd be running for prime minister, before a court ruled the move unconstitutional.

In response, he accused the judges of doing the bidding of the HDZ - "the gangster clique", as he put it.

The governing HDZ has been the dominant party since Croatia gained independence more than 30 years ago.

More than 60 injured after Strasbourg trams collide

JANUARY 12, 2025

Two trams collided at Strasbourg's central station on Saturday, injuring 68 people, authorities said.

Reports said that one tram, which had been stopped, moved backwards down a slope for unknown reasons, colliding with another tram that was stationary.

Videos and photos posted on social media showed two trams containing dozens of people inside. One video shows smoke rising and chaotic scenes as an alarm sounds.

A spokesman for the prefecture said an investigation into the cause of the accident has been opened and no fatalities have been confirmed. Prosecutors said the collision was not deliberate.

One eyewitness named Johan told AFP news agency that he saw one of the trams reversing at speed, adding: "We heard a big impact, a big bang."

Another eyewitness told BFM TV that the doors of the tram flew off on impact.

The outlet reported that a large security perimeter was set up in front of the station.

The Bas-Rhin region's Fire and Rescue Service posted on X urging people to avoid the area to allow emergency services to access the area.

The service's director Rene Cellier said some of the non-fatal injuries reported were "mostly trauma", but also include scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains.

"There are also around 100 people who have no particular injuries but are being seen by the doctors," Cellier said.

He added that around 50 vehicles and 130 firefighters were dispatched to the scene and that the situation "could have been much more serious".

Emmanuel Auneau, the director of the CTS - which is responsible for managing public transport in Strasbourg - said the two tram drivers were "not physically injured, but are very shocked".

Ukraine won’t reclaim all Russian-held territories – Trump adviser

12 Jan, 2025

It is not possible to “expel every Russian from every inch” of soil claimed by Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula, incoming US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz has admitted.

Acknowledging “that reality” has become a major step toward resolving the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, Waltz told ABC News in an interview on Sunday, adding that this idea is now in the process of being accepted by Ukraine’s backers.

“Everybody knows that this [conflict] has to end somehow diplomatically. I just don’t think it’s realistic to say we’re going to expel every Russian from every inch of Ukrainian soil. Even Crimea – President[-elect Donald] Trump has acknowledged that reality, and I think it has been a huge step forward that the entire world is acknowledging that reality,” Waltz stated.

Waltz suggested that accepting the fact that returning to Ukraine’s original post-Soviet borders is unrealistic now opens the way to addressing the question of “how do we no longer perpetuate this conflict and how… we no longer allow it to escalate in a way that drags in the entire world.”

The remarks appeared to be reminiscent of statements previously made by other close Trump allies, including his vice president, J.D. Vance. Shortly ahead of the November election, Vance suggested Kiev could end up in a situation where it decides to cede some lands to Russia.

The stance signaled by the incoming US administration sharply contrasts with the goal repeatedly proclaimed by Kiev of regaining the entirety of its post-Soviet territory. This has been accompanied by an explicit refusal by Ukraine to engage in any meaningful negotiations with Russia. Moscow, however, regards the five formerly Ukrainian regions, including Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as Crimea, as integral parts of its territory.

Crimea broke away from Ukraine in the aftermath of the 2014 Maidan coup in Kiev, joining Russia via a referendum shortly thereafter. The four other regions were incorporated into Russia in late 2022 after the local population overwhelmingly backed such a move during separate referendums. Last year, Moscow demanded that Kiev pull its troops out of the areas it still controls in its former regions in order to begin the long-stalled negotiation process.

Switzerland drifting towards NATO – largest party

12 Jan, 2025

A gradual drift towards NATO and indirect support of Ukraine are threats to Switzerland’s neutrality and security, the conservative Swiss People’s Party (SVP) has warned, urging Defense Minister Viola Amherd to resign.

In a press release on Saturday, the SVP, the Alpine country’s largest party, suggested that recent foreign policy decisions have jeopardized not only its traditional neutral position but also its defense posture. “Switzerland is no longer able to ensure the security of the country and its population on its own… [Swiss] sovereignty is in danger and has already been partially abandoned.”

The Swiss Army, meanwhile, is being poorly led and managed, the SVP continued. “Amherd prefers to deal with gender issues in the army rather than with the army’s equipment. She had weapons that were ordered for Switzerland, delivered to Ukraine,” the statement said.

While the SVP did not elaborate on the topic further, local media reported last summer that the US diverted Patriot missiles intended for Switzerland to Ukraine, despite contractual obligations.

The party continued by saying that “anyone who gradually binds Switzerland to NATO is accepting that young Swiss people will die abroad and that Switzerland will be drawn into foreign conflicts.” The SVP stressed that those “political errors” necessitated a change in leadership, urging Amherd to step down.

Switzerland, which has maintained neutrality since 1815, has refrained from delivering arms directly to Kiev, while barring other countries from re-exporting Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine, as well as other conflict zones.

However, Amherdsignaled last autumn that she was in favor of revising the policy preventing Swiss-made arms from being re-exported to Ukraine, arguing that the embargo was hurting the country’s industry. Bern has also supported EU sanctions against Russia over the conflict, spurring Moscow to list Switzerland as an “unfriendly nation.”

In recent months, Switzerland has deepened its ties with NATO, with Amherd becoming the country’s first defense minister to attend a meeting of the North Atlantic Council in 2023.

Canada the 51st US state? Trudeau says 'not going to happen'

13 Jan, 2025

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has re-iterated that Canada has no intention to become the 51st state of the US.

"It's not going to happen," he said.

Speaking to former White House press secretary Jen Psaki on MSNBC's "Inside" on Sunday, Trudeau discussed President-Elect Donald Trump's repeated comments that Canada could become a part of the US.

"I know as a successful negotiator he likes to keep people off balance. The 51st state, it's not going to happen," he said.

The prime minister, who has faced growing unpopularity in the polls ahead of a national election, announced that he will step down in March after his Liberal Party picks a new leader.

Trump has upped the ante recently with repeated comments about annexing Canada.

"You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security," Trump said at a press conference at his Florida Mar-a Lago home on Tuesday.

"Canada and the United States, that would really be something."

He has even gone so far as to call the prime minister "Governor Trudeau," a position usually held by leaders of US states.

But on television on Sunday, Trudeau said he pays those jabs no mind.

"I tend to focus on the substantive things, and not on people choosing nicknames for me. I mean, if I was that thin-skinned I probably wouldn't last that long in politics."

One of the big reasons Canada will not join America, Trudeau said, is simple: Canadians do not want to.

When trying to define their national identity, Trudeau said Canadians are likely to say "we're not Americans", amongst other things.

Earlier this week, Trudeau put it more bluntly, saying there was not "a snowball's chance in hell" that the two countries would become one.

Trudeau said that what he is concerned about is the impact of tariffs on Canadians and Americans. Tensions between Trump and Canada have been simmering since the president-elect announced his plan to implement 25% tariffs on goods coming from Canada.

The move would have a significant impact on Canada's economy, and could lead to retaliatory tariffs.

"Canadians are incredibly proud of being Canadian, but people are now talking about that rather than the impact that 25 percent tariffs," Trudeau said. "No American wants to pay 25 percent more for electricity or oil and gas coming in from Canada."

Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith posted on social media that she had met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence over the weekend to discuss the important of US-Canada energy partnerships. Alberta is a major oil and gas exporter.

Inside story of Biden's undoing: 'Infighting, frustration and an insular inner circle'

13 Jan, 2025

Standing at a lectern at Washington's National Cathedral last Thursday, Joe Biden delivered the eulogy for former President Jimmy Carter while three other former presidents – Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama – and the once and future president, Donald Trump, looked on.

Each spectating president had achieved the validation of the American people (re-election to a second term) that has eluded Biden. And as Biden, whose term comes to an end next week, paid tribute to Carter, a fellow one-term president, it was hard not to draw other parallels too.

"Many think he was from a bygone era, but in reality, he saw well into the future," Biden said of Carter. He went on to note Carter's accomplishments in advancing civil rights, his work on peace and nuclear non-proliferation, and his efforts to protect the environment.

Earlier in the week, however, Biden was making the case for his own legacy and how history should judge him.

"I hope that history says that I came in and I had a plan how to restore the economy and reestablish America's leadership in the world," he said in a television interview. "And I hope it records that I did it with honesty and integrity; that I said what was on my mind."

Whether that happens is subject to vigorous discussion - but he exits the White House with his approval ratings near their lowest mark of his presidency. Only 39% have a positive view, according to the latest Gallup survey, down from 57% at the start of his term.

Next week, the man he defeated in 2020 returns to power, marking what must feel to him like a dour end to a presidency.

Biden had his accomplishments – adroitly shepherding complex investment and infrastructure legislation through Congress despite narrow majorities, strengthening and expanding Nato, and appointing a remarkable number of diverse judges to the federal bench – but at least for now, that is overshadowed.

His current place in history is as the Democratic interregnum between the two Trump presidential terms. A blip, rather than a pivot.

"He'd like his legacy to be that he rescued us from Trump," says author and Democratic strategist Susan Estrich. "But sadly, for him, his legacy is Trump again. He is the bridge from Trump One to Trump Two."

It didn't have to be this way. Biden and his team were buffeted by events – some within his control and some outside it. Many of the most damaging developments were entirely predictable, however – and, in fact, predicted - yet the president and his administration appeared to be caught flat-footed.

For that, they paid a high price.

From Kabul chaos to early 'missteps'

Biden's first misstep as president came half a world away, in the chaos that unfolded during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021.

The exit had been negotiated during the final months of the Trump administration, but Biden backed it – despite warnings from some of his military advisors.

Those dire predictions proved prophetic, as Kabul descended into panic and unrest.

By the end of that month, Biden's Gallup approval rating had dipped below 50% for the first time – a mark it would never again reach.

On the domestic front, the situation for the president was equally inauspicious. By summer, US inflation had surpassed 5% for the first time in 30 years.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that she believed the spike was "transitory". Biden called it "temporary". Some outside the administration, most notably Obama's Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, thought otherwise.

By the time inflation reached its peak a year later, at 9.1% in June 2022, Yellen and Biden had admitted they miscalculated.

Americans did not forget or forgive, however. And although the monthly inflation numbers had dropped below 3% by summer 2024, unemployment remained low, economic growth was steady and the US had outperformed the world's other industrialised nations, voters continued to have a pessimistic view of the economy.

Other issues followed this pattern: The Biden administration was slow to respond to the post-Covid spike in undocumented migration at the US-Mexico border.

And it was seemingly caught off-guard by the disruptive impact the Republican-backed programme of relocating migrants to Democratic-run northern cities would have on government services far from the border.

Shortages in Covid tests and infant formula, a dramatic increase in the price of eggs, the end of Roe v Wade abortion protections, and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza – for every seemingly unanticipated fire the Biden administration addressed, two new ones would emerge.

The challenges were, in fact, daunting – ones that felled incumbent leaders in democracies around the world.

But for Biden and the Democrats, hoping to prove that they were a competent and effective counterpoint not just to Trump but to global authoritarian regimes, the stakes were high.

'An elderly man with a poor memory'

Amid all of this, responses from the administration were sometimes glaringly off-key. When asked during a television interview about raising oil production in America to reduce gas prices, in November 2021, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm responded with a laugh.

"That is hilarious," she said. "Would that I had the magic wand."

Biden – once regarded as a gifted communicator and orator - appeared less able to connect with the American people. Signs of his advancing years were also showing.

"Watching Biden speak, I'm like, oh my God, this is a different person," said a senior White House official who served in the early years of the Biden administration and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"Maybe it's simply that when you're there every day, you don't see it."

A report by Robert Hur, a special counsel appointed to investigate Biden's handling of classified documents, referred to the president as an "elderly man with a poor memory", setting off a round of hand-wringing among Democrats.

Biden's interactions with the media were curtailed, and his public appearances tightly scripted. His verbal miscues and stumbles became fodder for Republican attacks. But Biden pressed on, determined to seek and win a second term in office.

Biden's people: His inner circle

During his presidency, Biden surrounded himself with veterans of government service. His secretary of state, Antony Blinken, had been one of his top foreign policy advisors since his days in the Senate. Merrick Garland, a distinguished appellate court judge and Barack Obama's ill-fated 2016 pick for the Supreme Court, was tabbed for attorney general. Yellen, his pick for treasury, had previously chaired the Federal Reserve.

Within the White House, Biden chose Ron Klain – who had worked in Democratic presidential administrations for decades – as his chief of staff. Mike Donilon, another Biden veteran, served as a senior advisor.

The team was particularly successful at managing the narrow majorities in the House and the Senate, notching early legislative victories even in the face of unified Republican resistance and reluctance from centrists in his own party.

Biden's "American Rescue Plan", which passed just two months after he took office, included nearly $2 trillion in new government spending. It expanded healthcare subsidies, and funded the distribution of Covid vaccines and a payment programme that cut child poverty in half, to 5%.

Later that year, Democrats and some Republicans joined to pass an infrastructure investment bill, which included $1tn in new spending on transportation, clean energy, water, broadband and other construction programmes.

Others followed, marking a legislative agenda that few first-term presidents in the modern era could match – but it came with what some critics see as a fatal flaw.

Brent Cebul, an associate professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania, argues that Biden's efforts were too focused on shifting policies that take years to translate into economic benefits for average American workers.

"I think that the time horizon associated with those big pieces of legislation was way out of sync with the exigencies of the presidential election," he said.

Biden would have been better served finding ways to bring the tangible benefits to voters more quickly – a sentiment Biden himself expressed during a recent newspaper interview.

'Infighting and frustration' from within

His team also proved less able when success was measured not in laws enacted but in the daily messaging battle against a political opposition that was growing increasingly assertive.

A senior Biden official said that the White House team was more decisive early on in his presidency.

"As things started to become a grind and you lose that sense of getting big things done, it can give way to infighting and frustration," they admitted, adding that it was their sense that the circle around Biden became more insular as the pressure built.

After a two-year respite, his political opponents launched investigations, held hearings (into the Afghanistan withdrawal, the Biden family's business dealings and more) and, in September 2023, formally initiated a presidential impeachment inquiry. All the while, Biden's public approval languished in the low 40s.

Biden's presidency should be seen in two halves, says Mr Cebul. The first was more accomplished. The second was less focused.

"Biden's sense that the US was macro-economically doing quite well led him and his advisors to take their eyes off the ball when many, many Americans were still very much hurting."

A beleaguered election campaign

On 25 April, 2023, Biden made his presidential bid official in a campaign video warning that Trump "extremists" were threatening America.

Over the following months, there would be more warnings of the danger Trump posed to American democracy. He would tout his economic plan – embracing the label "Bidenomics" - and point to how inflation was dropping while the economy was still growing.

I travelled with Biden on a June 2023 trip to Chicago, where he held a reception for deep-pocketed donors and gave a speech on the economy in an historic downtown post office.

"Bidenomics is about the future," he said."Bidenomics is just another way of saying: Restore the American dream."

Mr Cebul believes that was a bad move.

"For him to then spend most of the spring and the early summer basically talking about how he's the most successful economic president in modern history, it was just so discordant," he said.

"Not only was the message out of sync, he was also just a terrible messenger."

In Chicago, as in many of his speeches, Biden's delivery was at times halting. His words sometimes mumbled and his syntax mangled.

Through it all, however, Biden was telling aides that he believed he was the man best positioned to defeat Trump – that he had done it once, and he would do it again. And those aides vigorously pushed back whenever anyone questioned Biden's abilities.

"I'm not a young guy, that's no secret," Biden said in a campaign advert. "But here's the deal: I understand how to get things done for the American people."

Hamas, Hunter and final hurdles

In the autumn, Biden confronted yet another crisis - following the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel, he quickly cautioned Israel not to overreact or overreach in its response to the bloodshed.

As with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the president turned his attention to world affairs. But unlike Ukraine, during which Biden assembled a unified western coalition against the invasion, the continued US support of Israel eroded enthusiasm and support for Biden in some quarters at home.

At the same time, Biden was confronting his son Hunter's growing legal troubles – a June trial and conviction on gun charges and, perhaps more concerning for the president, an indictment on tax-related violations that involved Hunter's foreign business dealings.

The airing of family discord and pain was, at the very least, a distraction and an emotional drain on the president. His ultimate decision to pardon his son, made after November's election, was condemned by many, including some allies.

Ultimately, Biden's presidential bid – and his presidency – came crashing down in late June on a stage in Atlanta during a debate with Trump. His confused and at times incomprehensible performance dealt his campaign a mortal blow that seemingly confirmed Republican attacks – and Democratic fears – about his advancing age.

But eventually, after Trump defiantly responded to a failed assassination attempt and held a boisterous, unified national party convention in mid-July, Biden dropped out of the race.

Trump's victory over Kamala Harris, Biden's hand-picked successor, ensured that the final electoral judgement on Biden's half-century political career would be one of rejection and defeat.

What would Biden's legacy have been if he had simply stepped aside – "passed the torch" in his words – without seeking a second term? No video campaign launch. No grasping for campaign messages or Trump debate disaster. Instead, a robust race for the Democratic nomination with Biden floating above it all.

"We should have had primaries," argues Ms Estrich. "His successor would have had time to make the case."

In the end, Biden's age and Trump's enduring appeal were the fires that his administration could never put out, and the ones that ultimately consumed his presidency.

In exactly one week, Trump will take the oath of office and will likely set about dismantling much of what Biden accomplished over the past four years. How effective he is at doing this will go a long way towards determining Biden's lasting legacy.

A few weeks ago, I asked Attorney General Garland how he thought history would judge Biden and this administration.

Biden attacks Meta’s fact-checking U-turn

12 Jan, 2025

US President Joe Biden has attacked Meta for dropping its controversial third-party fact-checking program, stating the move was “completely contrary to what America is about.”

The president addressed the development on Friday during a rare Q&A session with reporters at the White House. He sharply criticized Mark Zuckerberg’s company, the parent of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads for the move.

“The whole idea of walking away from fact-checking as well as not reporting anything having to do with discrimination regarding…I find it to be contrary to American justice. Telling the truth matters,” Biden stated, adding the move appeared to be “completely contrary to what America is about.”

“We want to tell the truth. The idea that a billionaire can buy something and say that they won’t fact-check, and then you have millions of people reading it – I think it’s really shameful,” the president asserted.

Meta announced the drastic change to its policies earlier this week, with Zuckerberg admitting the fact-checking service has become “too politically biased” and “has destroyed more trust than they’ve created.”

“What started as a movement to be more inclusive has increasingly been used to shut down opinions and shut out people with different ideas, and it’s gone too far,” the Meta CEO said.

The company now plans to introduce a model similar to the scheme used by Elon Musk’s platform X, allowing users to flag potentially misleading posts and add “community notes” to them for additional context.

Meta has also opted to drop its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and revised its approach to the hiring process that previously took gender and the racial background of applicants into account. The changes have reportedly already started taking effect across the company’s offices. Examples include an order to remove tampons from male bathrooms, as well as transgender and non-binary themes having been taken off the company’s messenger.

Trump’s Greenland plan ‘not a crazy idea’ – former top NATO commander

13 Jan, 2025

US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to acquire Greenland from Denmark is not a “crazy idea,” the former NATO supreme allied commander in Europe, James Stavridis, has said. However, he dismissed the possibility of military intervention, instead advocating for economic engagement as a means to strengthen ties with the region.

Speaking on ‘The Cats Roundtable’ with John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 radio on Sunday, the retired admiral described Greenland as a “strategic goldmine for the United States,” highlighting its location and abundant natural resources.

“It sits at the very top of the North Atlantic. It protects approaches to our own country – the Atlantic Ocean – so it is geographically very important,” Stavridis said. He added that the region is rich in rare minerals and likely has vast oil and gas deposits.

“And it’s huge, a huge land mass. It’s three times the size of Texas,” he said, agreeing with the host that Greenland is “almost a better deal than Alaska.”

“And here’s my point. We already almost bought Greenland,” Stavridis said. “We almost bought it at the same time when we bought Alaska, back in the 1860s. So it’s not a crazy idea.”

The former NATO commander ruled out using “military force to attack Greenland or Denmark,” arguing that the US should focus on economic engagement to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the region.

“We could do an awful lot in terms of business, investment, box out the Russians, box out the Chinese, and work very closely with Greenland,” he said. He added that Greenland “doesn’t have to become the 51st state, but it could certainly be an economic objective for us.”

Trump first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, a proposal that was swiftly rejected by Danish and Greenlandic officials. He revived the idea last month, describing the ownership of the Arctic island as “an absolute necessity” for US security.

Greenland’s pro-independence prime minister, Mute Egede, has ruled out selling the island but said on Friday that he was “ready to talk” with Trump. “We have a desire to be the master of our own house,” he stated.

Although Denmark has rejected Trump’s proposal, Copenhagen has reportedly floated the possibility of boosting the US military presence on Greenland, which already hosts an American base.

A self-governing Danish territory since 1979, Greenland has gradually been pursuing greater sovereignty. The island currently has its own government, but Denmark retains control over foreign affairs and defense.
