Respecting Differences Key To Living In Peace And For All To Thrive In Society: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat

NEW DELHI: Diversity is natural and differences should be respected, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Sunday.

Addressing a gathering after unfurling the national flag at the Republic Day celebration at a college at Bhiwandi in Maharashtra’s Thane district, Bhagwat emphasised the need to ensure equal opportunities for all to thrive in society.

“No one should be suppressed, and everyone should get an opportunity to grow. Cohesion is the key to living in harmony,” he said.

Bhagwat said diversity is India’s strength and should be embraced. “Clashes are happening outside Bharat due to diversity. We see diversity as a natural part of life. You can have your own specialities, but you must be good to each other. If you want to live, it should be a cohesive living. You cannot be happy if your family is unhappy. Similarly, a family cannot be happy if the town is facing trouble,” he said.

The RSS chief also underlined the need for combining knowledge with dedication in all endeavours and efforts while working for the nation and society together.

He urged citizens to recognise their collective responsibility toward the nation. “You cannot outsource or contract it to anyone else,” he said.

Syria Monitor Says 35 People, Mostly Of Assad-Era Officers, Executed In Three Days

-------------

DAMASCUS: Fighters affiliated with Syria’s new Islamist leaders have carried out 35 summary executions over 72 hours, mostly of Assad-era officers, a war monitor said Sunday.

The authorities, installed by the rebel forces that toppled longtime president Bashar Assad last month, said they had carried out multiple arrests in the western Homs area over unspecified “violations.”

Official news agency SANA said the authorities on Friday accused members of a “criminal group” who used a security sweep to commit abuses against residents, “posing as members of the security services.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said that “these arrests follow grave violations and summary executions that had cost the lives of 35 people over the past 72 hours.”

It also said that “members of religious minorities” had suffered “humiliations.”

Most of those executed are former officers in the toppled Assad government who had presented themselves in centers set up by the new authorities, according to the Britain-based monitor with a network of sources inside Syria.

“Dozens of members of local armed groups under the control of the new Sunni Islamist coalition in power who participated in the security operations” in the Homs area “have been arrested,” the Observatory said.

It added that these groups “carried out reprisals and settled old scores with members of the Alawite minority to which Bashar Assad belongs, taking advantage of the state of chaos, the proliferations of arms and their ties to the new authorities.”

The Observatory listed “mass arbitrary arrests, atrocious abuse, attacks against religious symbols, mutilations of corpses, summary and brutal executions targeting civilians,” which it said showed “an unprecedented level of cruelty and violence.”

Civil Peace Group, a civil society organization, said in a statement that there had been civilian victims in multiple villages in the Homs area during the security sweep.

The group “condemned the unjustified violations” including the killing of unarmed men.

Since seizing power, the new authorities have sought to reassure religious and ethnic minorities in Syria that their rights would be upheld.

Members of Assad’s Alawite minority have expressed fear of retaliation over abuses during his clan’s decades in power.

-------------

RIYADH: Ambassador of India to the Kingdom Suhel Ajaz Khan underlined that a mutual appreciation of culture was strengthening ties between Saudi Arabia and India during the latter’s 76th Republic Day celebration in Riyadh.

“A shared love for culture brings our countries together,” he said. “From Bollywood cinema to yoga, music, and food, we have continued to be inspired by each other.

“We were delighted to participate in the annual Riyadh Season 2024 under the Global Harmony Initiative of the Saudi government,” he added, referring to a series of events which began in October to celebrate the culture of the Kingdom’s different expatriate groups.

India’s Republic Day was celebrated on Sunday evening in the Cultural Palace in Riyadh and brought together both Saudis and Indians in a commemoration of culture and history.

Omar Khan, an Indian native who has called the Kingdom his home for nearly three decades, attended the event.

The product manager at STC Technologies told Arab News: “I’m a second-generation, third-culture kid. I’ve seen Republic Days for the past three decades in Saudi Arabia.

“I think one thing that’s very important is the representation of my country. It makes me proud that, although India is a distant land for me and Riyadh is home, I feel very connected, and I see that the partnership of Saudi Arabia and India has grown leaps and bounds.

“I’m very proud to say that I am somebody who grew up in Saudi Arabia and yet is Indian by his roots.”

Indian youngsters took to the stage following the ambassador’s speech to perform a dance routine showcasing their country’s music and culture.

The embassy event also featured multiple booths to highlight the many Indian-owned businesses and products in the Kingdom, in the food, tourism, and medical sectors.

India’s Ministry of Tribal Affairs also had a booth to showcase handmade products from the country, including coats, artifacts, and silk pashminas.

Staff from Aster Sanad Hospital were present to help visitors with medical issues.

The ambassador said: “India will work with our international partners, including Saudi Arabia, to contribute to a world of peace, prosperity, and inclusive growth.

“With these words I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people for their long-standing friendship and support.

“Let us continue to work together to build a future based on mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation.”

Ekiti Monarch Disbands Sharia Panel, Summons Islamic Leaders

26 January 2025

The Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, yesterday, ordered the dissolution of the Sharia panel set up at the Central Mosque, Ado Ekiti to ensure law and order as well as peaceful coexistence in the state.

Adejugbe spoke in Ado Ekiti during a meeting he held with the chiefs, and indigenes of the community, as well as the Chief Imam and President of the League of Imams and Alfas in the South-west, Edo and Delta states, Sheik Jamiu Kewulere; and other Muslim leaders over the tension in some quarters over the sharia panel.

This came barely two days after the state government said that the existing legal structure in the state did not recognise the Sharia Court or Sharia Arbitration Panel.

The state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Dayo Apata (SAN) had spoken in reaction to news reports on the first public sitting of a Shari’ah Panel in the state, which resolved two marriage disputes.

He had stated that the Customary Court, Customary Court of Appeal and High Court had been handling issues relating to Islamic, Christian and traditional marriages and inheritance without any rancour or agitation.

Adejugbe said: “Based on this Sharia issue, I summoned the Chief Imam and his lieutenants, members of the Ewi-in-Council, the President of Ado Progressives Union and Ado sons and daughters to discuss the matter because it is a sensitive issue.

“We all listened and it appears they set up a committee at the Central Mosque to listen to disputes. According to them, they have good intentions and it was an internal arrangement that has nothing to do with any external person or somebody influencing them.

“I told them the mood of the nation will not allow such to happen now; that they should revert to how the founding fathers of the mosque had been settling disputes in the past without setting up a committee.

“I told them that there is no need for the committee and they should dissolve the committee henceforth. That is the decision of the Ewi-in-Council and that is the position of all Ado sons and daughters.

“The panel stands dissolved. If we should allow such committees, the Christians too will want to set up committees in their various churches; the traditional worshippers too and before you know it, it will lead to crises.”

Speaking earlier, the Chief Imam, Kewulere, who confirmed setting up the committee, which he said had resolved a marriage dispute and adjourned on a second matter, dismissed all insinuations that it was set up for sinister motives.

Kewulere, who said that Muslims and adherents of other religions had been enjoying cordial relationships, said, “Basically, the committee is to look into matters of inheritance in the interest of our members.”

He dismissed insinuations that it was to create a crisis and also debunked any external influence or link.

BJP-led NDA amendments accepted, Oppn's defeated in Waqf bill committee

Jan 27 2025

The Joint Parliamentary Committee scrutinising the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Monday adopted all amendments proposed by the ruling BJP-led NDA members and negated every change moved by opposition members.

The committee chairman Jagdambika Pal told reporters after the meeting that amendments adopted by the committee will make the law better and more effective.

However, opposition MPs decried the meeting's proceedings and accused Pal of "subverting" the democratic process.

"It was a farcical exercise. We were not heard. Pal has acted in a dictatorial manner," TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee told reporters.

Pal rejected the charge, and said the entire exercise was democratic, and the majority view prevailed.

One of the more significant amendments proposed by the committee is that the existing Waqf properties cannot be questioned on the grounds of 'Waqf by user', which existed in the current law but will be omitted in the new version, if the properties are being used for religious purposes.

Pal said the amendments moved by the NDA members in 14 of the Bill's clauses have been accepted.

Opposition members moved hundreds of amendments in all 44 clauses and all of them were defeated by vote, he added.

Telangana CM demands withdrawal of draft UGC regulations, calls them ‘attack on Constitution’

January 27, 2025

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy raised strong objections to the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) draft regulations, calling for their immediate withdrawal. Reddy described the proposed regulations as an assault on the Indian Constitution and alleged that the Union government was attempting to usurp the powers of state governments in managing universities.

He also argued that this move could undermine the autonomy of state-run universities and pave the way for them to be used as platforms for spreading biased propaganda by certain individuals.

Reddy’s criticisms were rooted in concerns about the governance of universities, particularly regarding the proposed changes in the appointment process for key administrative and academic positions.

The draft regulations, which were released on January 6, aim to give more authority to chancellors, particularly in the selection of vice-chancellors for universities.

This shift is particularly contentious because in most state-run universities, the chancellor is the governor, who is appointed by the Union government.

This arrangement has raised fears among opposition-ruled states that it could lead to the central government gaining excessive control over university leadership.

Reddy claimed that there was a hidden agenda behind the regulations, accusing the Centre of attempting to centralize control over the higher education sector. He pointed out that such a move could lead to the selection of vice-chancellors who lack the necessary academic credentials or administrative experience.

This concern was echoed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who objected to a provision in the draft rules that would allow individuals without an academic background to be appointed as vice-chancellors. Stalin argued that such appointments could undermine the integrity and functioning of educational institutions.

The opposition to the draft regulations has gained traction across southern states. On January 9, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution against the proposed changes, and on January 21, the Kerala Assembly followed suit.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also expressed his discontent on January 9, calling the draft regulations a “betrayal” of the people of Karnataka.

Reddy revealed that he had coordinated with his counterparts in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka to voice their opposition, and he planned to discuss the matter with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu as well.

The growing resistance from opposition-ruled states underscores the widespread concerns about the draft regulations and their potential impact on the autonomy of universities and the broader education system in India.

Resistance Victories Highlight Genuine Islamic Solidarity: Iranian Shia Cleric

January 26, 2025

"We have witnessed the manifestation of true Islamic unity in the victories of the Resistance Front, and I hope these victories are also adorned with art and poetry," he stated.

At the unveiling of the festival's poster, Hojjatoleslam Qomi expressed his joy about the event, saying, "I am pleased that today we are unveiling a congress centered around poetry, which wisely focuses on the strategic principle of unity."

The ceremony was also attended by Nasser Abu Sharif, the representative of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement in Iran.

Hojjatoleslam Qomi further elaborated, "God willing, this congress will be more than just a literary gathering; it will be a step forward in strengthening the epic spirit based on wisdom within the Islamic community."

The head of the Islamic Development Organization emphasized the role of poetry in not just expressing emotions but transforming them into an epic narrative.

"The greatness shown by figures like Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Yahya Sinwar, along with other martyrs of the Resistance Front, should be narrated through poetry, which is one of the goals of this festival," he added.

Hojjatoleslam Qomi emphasized that one of the festival's primary objectives is to steadfastly uphold pure Islam and its unshakable foundations.

"If we lose our unity and coalition among Muslims, it will delight our enemies and create difficulties for the Islamic community," he stated.

Hojjatoleslam Qomi added that the Iranian people have consistently supported Palestine to the best of their abilities.

"Their contributions, such as personal jewelry donated to the Resistance Front, each tell a story. For instance, the martyr's wife who recently gave her wedding ring to aid the people of Gaza exemplifies the pinnacle of our nation's self-sacrifice for the Palestinian cause," he concluded.

Arab League says any plan to uproot Palestinians from Gaza would be ‘ethnic cleansing’

January 27, 2025

CAIRO: The Arab League on Sunday warned against “attempts to uproot the Palestinian people from their land,” after US President Donald Trump suggested a plan to “clean out” the Gaza Strip and move its population to Egypt and Jordan.

“The forced displacement and eviction of people from their land can only be called ethnic cleansing,” the regional bloc’s general secretariat said in a statement.

“Attempts to uproot the Palestinian people from their land, whether by displacement, annexation or settlement expansion, have been proven to fail in the past,” the statement added.

Earlier Sunday, Egypt vehemently expressed its objection to Trump's suggestion.

Cairo’s foreign ministry in a statement expressed Egypt’s “continued support for the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land.”

It “rejected any infringement on those inalienable rights, whether by settlement or annexation of land, or by the depopulation of that land of its people through displacement, encouraged transfer or the uprooting of Palestinians from their land, whether temporarily or long-term.”

After 15 months of war, Trump said Gaza had become a “demolition site” and he would “like Egypt to take people, and I’d like Jordan to take people.”

Moving Gaza’s inhabitants could be done “temporarily or could be long term,” he said.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023 both countries have warned of plans to displace Palestinians from Gaza into neighboring Egypt and from the West Bank into Jordan.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, with whom Trump said he would speak on Sunday, has repeatedly warned that said displacement would aim to “eradicate the cause for Palestinian statehood.”

El-Sisi has described the prospect as a “red line” that would threaten Egypt’s national security.

The Egyptian foreign ministry on Sunday urged the implementation of the “two-state solution,” which Cairo has said would become impossible if Palestinians were removed from their territories.

Discussions continue with Islamic Jihad over early release of hostage Israeli Arbel Yehud

January 26, 2025

Talks over the release of Israeli hostage Arbel Yehud, who per the ceasefire agreement was supposed to be released last weekend, are still ongoing, a senior Israeli official briefed media outlets Sunday evening.

“Contrary to reports, there is currently no agreement regarding the return of Arbel Yehud,” the source asserted, contradicting claims that an agreement had been reached made by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), which holds Yehud captive.

“Negotiations with the mediators are continuing,” the source added, “Israel will not allow Gazans to cross into the northern Gaza Strip until the matter is resolved.”

Army Radio reported that Israel believes the talks will conclude on Sunday evening, and demands that Yehud be released by Wednesday.

In addition, Israel is demanding to receive the full list of the condition of all hostages, which Hamas should have provided by Saturday, according to the agreement.

Before last weekend's hostage release, Israel demanded that Hamas fulfill the terms of the agreement and release all the civilian hostages slated for release during this phase of the hostage deal, before freeing IDF soldiers.

Nevertheless, Hamas released four female soldiers on Saturday, leaving the fate of the last two remaining civilians, Arbel Yehud and Shiri Silberman Bibas, in doubt.

Due to the breach of terms, Israel declared that IDF troops would not withdraw from the Netzarim Corridor until Yehud’s release was arranged. The corridor cuts off the northern part of the enclave, and prevents Gazans from returning north.

PIJ Deputy Secretary-General Muhammad al-Hindi had told Al Jazeera earlier that his group “informed the mediators that Arbel Yehud is alive. To prevent Israel excuses, we agree with the mediators that Arbel Yehud will be released before Saturday, in exchange for the release of 30 Palestinian prisoners.”

“The issue of the kidnapped Arbel Yehud is on the way to a solution,” al-Hindi continued. “Israel is trying to delay the ceasefire agreement and should have allowed the return of the Palestinians to the northern Gaza Strip.”

Another anonymous, “political” source later told Israeli media outlets, “A sign of life does not satisfy us. We demand an explicit commitment from the mediators to an arrangement for her release before Saturday. Until then - the IDF will not withdraw from the Netzarim Corridor.”

On Sunday, IDF soldiers several times fired warning shots at the tens of thousands of Palestinians who attempted to advance toward the north and approached IDF positions.

Previous media reports suggested that Yehud is being held hostage by a small Salafist splinter group connected to PIJ, and that PIJ’s local branch was resisting instructions from its leadership abroad to release Yehud.

IDF Spokesman Brig.-Gen. Daniel Hagari said Saturday that “Hamas failed to meet its obligations to release Israeli female civilian hostages first, as part of the agreement.”

“We are determined to return Arbel Yehud, an Israeli citizen kidnapped from Nir Oz, and also Shiri Bibas and her two children, Kfir and Ariel, whose welfare we are extremely concerned about,” Hagari added.

“We appreciate and thank the efforts of all the international mediators, the United States, Qatar and Egypt. And we expect them to make sure Hamas stands in accordance with the agreement.”

Hamas for its part claimed that Israel was violating the agreement by keeping the Netzarim Corridor closed. “Hamas and the mediators are monitoring the occupation's prevention of the return of the displaced to the north, which is using the excuse of Arbel Yehud - even though we announced that she was alive and provided all the necessary guarantees for her release,” Hamas stated.

Deal reached to release more Israeli hostages and allow Palestinians into north Gaza

January 27, 2025

DOHA/JERUSALEM/GAZA CITY: Mediator Qatar announced early Monday that an agreement has been reached to release an Israeli civilian hostage and allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza, easing the first major crisis of the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Qatar’s statement said Hamas will hand over the civilian hostage, Arbel Yehoud, along with two other hostages before Friday. And on Monday, Israeli authorities will allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement said the hostage release — which will include soldier Agam Berger — will take place on Thursday, and confirmed that Palestinians can move north on Monday. Israel’s military said people can start crossing on foot at 7 a.m.

Under the ceasefire deal, Israel on Saturday was to begin allowing Palestinians to return to their homes in northern Gaza. But Israel put that on hold because of Yehoud, who Israel said should have been released on Saturday. Hamas accused Israel of violating the agreement.

Netanyahu's office said that another six hostages would be released in the coming week, after talks with Hamas. Three would be released on Thursday and another three on Saturday, said a statement from his office.

The breakthrough preserves a fragile ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, which has devastated the Gaza Strip and displaced nearly all its residents, paving the way for more hostage-prisoner swaps under a deal aimed at ending the more than 15-month conflict.

Israel had been preventing vast crowds of Palestinians from using a coastal road to return to northern Gaza, accusing Hamas of violating the truce agreement by failing to release civilian women hostages.

“Hamas has backtracked and will carry out an additional phase of releasing hostages this Thursday,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.

Trump’s plan meets mixed reactions

Palestinian leaders meanwhile slammed a plan floated by US President Donald Trump to “clean out” Gaza, vowing to resist any effort to forcibly displace residents of the war-battered territory.

Trump said Gaza had become a “demolition site,” adding he had spoken to Jordan’s King Abdullah II about moving Palestinians out.

“I’d like Egypt to take people. And I’d like Jordan to take people,” Trump told reporters.

Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, who is based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, “expressed strong rejection and condemnation of any projects” aimed at displacing Palestinians from Gaza, his office said.

Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, told AFP that Palestinians would “foil such projects,” as they have done to similar plans “for displacement and alternative homelands over the decades.”

Islamic Jihad, which has fought alongside Hamas in Gaza, called Trump’s idea “deplorable.”

For Palestinians, any attempt to move them from Gaza would evoke dark memories of what the Arab world calls the “Nakba,” or catastrophe — the mass displacement of Palestinians during Israel’s creation in 1948.

“We say to Trump and the whole world: we will not leave Palestine or Gaza, no matter what happens,” said displaced Gaza resident Rashad Al-Naji.

Trump floated the idea to reporters Saturday aboard Air Force One: “You’re talking about probably a million and half people, and we just clean out that whole thing.”

Moving Gaza’s roughly 2.4 million inhabitants could be done “temporarily or could be long term,” he said.

Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich — who opposed the truce deal and has voiced support for re-establishing Israeli settlements in Gaza — called Trump’s suggestion of “a great idea.”

Tantamount to ‘ethnic cleansing’

The Arab League rejected the idea, warning against “attempts to uproot the Palestinian people from their land.”

“The forced displacement and eviction of people from their land can only be called ethnic cleansing,” the league said in a statement.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said “our rejection of the displacement of Palestinians is firm and will not change. Jordan is for Jordanians and Palestine is for Palestinians.”

Egypt’s foreign ministry said it rejected any infringement of Palestinians’ “inalienable rights.”

In Gaza, cars and carts loaded with belongings jammed a road near the Netzarim Corridor that Israel has blocked, preventing the expected return of hundreds of thousands of people to northern Gaza.

Israel had said it would prevent Palestinians’ passage until the release of Arbel Yehud, a civilian woman hostage. She is among those slated for return on Thursday, according to Netanyahu’s office.

Hamas said that blocking returns to the north also amounted to a truce violation, adding it had provided “all the necessary guarantees” for Yehud’s release.

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said Monday that residents would be allowed to return on foot starting at 07 a.m. (0500 GMT) and by car at 9 a.m.

Staggered releases

During the first phase of the Gaza truce, 33 hostages are supposed to be freed in staggered releases over six weeks in exchange for around 1,900 Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

The most recent swap saw four Israeli women hostages, all soldiers, and 200 prisoners, nearly all Palestinian, released Saturday — the second such exchange during the fragile truce entering its second week.

Dani Miran, whose hostage son Omri is not slated for release during the first phase, demonstrated outside Netanyahu’s office in Jerusalem on Sunday.

“We want the agreement to continue and for them to bring our children back as quickly as possible — and all at once,” he said.

The truce has brought a surge of food, fuel, medicines and other aid into rubble-strewn Gaza, but the UN says “the humanitarian situation remains dire.”

Of the 251 hostages seized during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack that ignited the war, 87 remain in Gaza, including 34 the military says are dead.

The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of 1,210 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 47,306 people in Gaza, the majority civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that the United Nations considers reliable.

Trump’s Palestinian refugee idea falls flat with Jordan and confounds a Senate ally

January 27, 2025

DORAL, Florida: President Donald Trump’s push to have Egypt and Jordan take in large numbers of Palestinian refugees from besieged Gaza fell flat with those countries’ governments and left a key congressional ally in Washington perplexed on Sunday.

Fighting that broke out in the territory after ruling Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023 is paused due to a fragile ceasefire, but much of Gaza’s population has been left largely homeless by an Israeli military campaign. Trump told reporters Saturday aboard Air Force One that moving some 1.5 million people away from Gaza might mean that “we just clean out that whole thing.”

Trump relayed what he told Jordan’s King Abdullah when the two held a call earlier Saturday: “I said to him, ‘I’d love for you to take on more because I’m looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now, and it’s a mess.’”

He said he was making a similar appeal to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during a conversation they were having while Trump was at his Doral resort in Florida on Sunday. Trump said he would “like Egypt to take people and I’d like Jordan to take people.”

Egypt and Jordan, along with the Palestinians, worry that Israel would never allow them to return to Gaza once they have left. Both Egypt and Jordan also have perpetually struggling economies and their governments, as well as those of other Arab states, fear massive destabilization of their own countries and the region from any such influx of refugees.

Jordan already is home to more than 2 million Palestinian refugees. Egypt has warned of the security implications of transferring large numbers of Palestinians to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, bordering Gaza.

Trump suggested that resettling most of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million could be temporary or long term.

Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, said Sunday that his country’s opposition to what Trump floated was “firm and unwavering.” Some Israel officials had raised the idea early in the war.

Egypt’s foreign minister issued a statement saying that the temporary or long-term transfer of Palestinians “risks expanding the conflict in the region.”

Trump does have leverage to wield over Jordan, which is a debt-strapped, but strategically important, US ally and is heavily dependent on foreign aid. The US is historically the single-largest provider of that aid, including more than $1.6 billion through the State Department in 2023.

Much of that comes as support for Jordan’s security forces and direct budget support.

Jordan in return has been a vital regional partner to the US in trying to help keep the region stable. Jordan hosts some 3,000 US troops. Yet, on Friday, new Secretary of State Marco Rubio exempted security assistance to Israel and Egypt but not to Jordan, when he laid out the details of a freeze on foreign assistance that Trump ordered on his first day in office.

Meantime, in the United States, even Trump loyalists tried to make sense of his words.

“I really don’t know,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, when asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” about what Trump meant by the ”clean out” remark. Graham, who is close to Trump, said the suggestion was not feasible.

“The idea that all the Palestinians are going to leave and go somewhere else, I don’t see that to be overly practical,” said Graham, R-S.C. He said Trump should keep talking to Mideast leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and officials in the United Arab Emirates.

“I don’t know what he’s talking about. But go talk to MBS, go talk to UAE, go talk to Egypt,” Graham said. “What is their plan for the Palestinians? Do they want them all to leave?”

Trump, a staunch supporter of Israel, also announced Saturday that he had directed the US to release a supply of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel. Former President Joe Biden had imposed a hold due to concerns about their effects on Gaza’s civilian population.

Egypt and Jordan have made peace with Israel but support the creation of a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, territories that Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast War. They fear that the permanent displacement of Gaza’s population could make that impossible.

In making his case for such a massive population shift, Trump said Gaza is “literally a demolition site right now.”

“I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations, and build housing in a different location,” he said of people displaced in Gaza. “Where they can maybe live in peace for a change.”

Islamic leaders call for unity against extremism at Bangkok conference

January 26, 2025

RIYADH: Participants in Bangkok on Sunday at the third Khair Ummah conference of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations stressed Islam’s foundation in worshipping Allah and following the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings, urging Muslims to promote moderation while contributing to progress.

In a final communique of the two-day event, which was organized by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Thailand, participants called on scholars to uphold Islam’s tolerant values and address misinterpretations of religious discourse.

They highlighted the importance of following the path of the Prophet’s companions, combating extremism, and rejecting groups that misused religion for personal gain, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Participants stressed the need to leverage modern media and technology to promote Islam, counter misinformation through research, and develop programs instilling Islamic values and tolerance in young people.

The conference focused on research papers by various scholars and aimed to strengthen communication among Islamic leaders and institutions to advance civilization.

Saudi Arabia’s Islamic Minister Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Asheikh on Saturday emphasized that the conference aimed to strengthen Islamic unity and uphold Islamic identity through solidarity and adherence to the truth.

He said that scholars had a significant responsibility in light of global challenges and the intellectual, political, social, and security issues facing the world.

Al-Asheikh added: “This situation calls for a real response from scholars and researchers to clarify the right religious stance against sedition and to reinforce the core principles of the Islamic faith.”

World Monument Fund to protect historic sites with Bahraini, Saudi, and Gulf partners

TAMARA ABOALSAUD

January 26, 2025

MUHARRAQ: On a historical preservation tour around the Arabian Gulf region, the World Monument Fund recently visited the city of Muharraq in Bahrain before visiting Saudi Arabia.

A historically rich city with a story that dates to the late 19th century, Muharraq is the cultural heart of Bahrain.

Prior to gaining independence from British rule in 1971, Muharraq was Bahrain’s capital and center for public and governmental administrative, educational, and planning projects, before being replaced by Manama in 1923.

Though the city held many significant historical sites, its residents began to leave soon after and the area was left neglected.

Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and chairperson of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage, founded the Sheikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa Center for Culture and Research in 2002, a non-profit organization, as a form of cultural renaissance.

Since its founding, the center’s purpose has been to form a space where thinkers could gather and share ideas in philosophy, literature, poetry, art, and culture.

The most significant aspect of its work, however, has been the house restoration projects in Muharraq and Manama, where 28 historical houses, many of which belonged to prominent Bahraini figures and families, have been brought back to life under the leadership of Al-Khalifa.

Over the weekend, a delegation from the World Monument Fund visited the Sheikh Ebrahim Center to see the restored houses firsthand.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the mission of the World Monuments Fund is to safeguard heritage all around the world, Benedicte de Montlaur, president of the fund, told Arab News.

Al-Khalifa was awarded the Watch Award by the World Monument Fund in 2015 and after a few visits to their offices in New York, she was asked to join them as a member of the board of trustees, making her the only Arab on the board.

In an interview with Arab News, Al-Khalifa said she felt it was her responsibility to keep them informed about the Arab world and all that it has to offer.

“The picture that travels to the world is not always true or complete, and in our Gulf countries there are many landmarks, monuments, and national identities that we would like to showcase,” she said.

The delegation first visited the Abdullah Al-Zayed House for Bahrain Press Heritage, the house of the first journalist to start a daily newspaper in the kingdom and which now hosts local and international speakers from the media sector.

Next up was the Kurar House, where Al-Kurar Ladies spend their time embroidering traditional Bahraini thobes and other garments by hand. Like the strings of an instrument, three women work on the thread separately, and one stitches them together simultaneously on the fabric, creating a harmonious rhythm.

The delegation also got to see the only room left of Sheikh Ebrahim’s original house, a room that dates back around 200 years.

Following the tour of the Sheikh Ebrahim restored houses projects, they also visited the houses of the Pearling Path and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dilmun Burial Grounds.

With over 70 projects in the Arab world including the Louvre, the Smithsonian, and Babylon in Iraq, restoring the Imam Palace in the city of Taizz in Yemen, and Abydos in Egypt, the fund’s next mission is to become more active in the Gulf region.

“We see that there is a lot of interest in heritage in countries from the GCC,” de Montlaur said.

The first stop was Kuwait, where plans are underway to have Failaka Island added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

After visiting their partners from the UNESCO Regional Center and the Sheikh Ebrahim Center in Bahrain, the delegation’s next destination is Saudi Arabia, “a country that is devoting a lot of time and energy at the moment to heritage,” de Montlaur said.

In discussion with the Royal Commission of AlUla and the Heritage Commission for future partnerships, the World Monument Fund is visiting AlUla as well as Historic Jeddah for the Islamic Arts Biennale.

“If you do not know your past, it is very difficult to build a future because you lose your identity,” de Montlaur said. “Especially in countries like here, that are developing really fast … it is extremely important also to pay attention to heritage places because it is very easy to destroy them, but when they are gone, they’re gone. They cannot be rebuilt.

“Once you have lost the spirit of a place and built modern buildings everywhere, then you have lost touch with your past.”

Preserving the land’s past also draws in crowds of tourists who get to experience each country’s distinct identity and history for the first time to learn about the place and its people, de Montlaur added.

“Heritage places represent the pinnacle of human achievements of history.”

On how the Arab world can work together to create a stronger stance for historical preservation, de Montlaur said: “I think it is already happening,” citing the various projects in Iraq, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, etc.

She also added: “There is a big need for heritage preservation in other countries outside of the GCC, so they could align their forces.

“There is so much need in Egypt, in Gaza … in Syria … and I think what is very much part of the Arab countries is this solidarity, they can all unite around this heritage because this is the heritage of all the Arabs.”

Al-Khalifa added: “In Gaza, many landmarks have been destroyed, part of the upcoming plan is restoring some of those sites.

“It’s really a heritage of humanity as a whole and that is why every one of us, whether we are from the region or not, should care about it. But before anything else, it is the history and identity of the Arabs,” de Montlaur noted.

Speaking on the shared language and culture that unite Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, Al-Khalifa, who is also a part of the Royal Commission of AlUla, said that emotions and love between peoples are what bond them forever.

“This visit is not only to Bahrain but to our Gulf,” she said. “We always repeat: our Gulf is one, our goals are one, and our history is shared; so everything that distinguishes us — from identity to monuments — is an extension of civilizations thousands of years old.”

5.6 million worshippers flock to Prophet's Mosque in 1 week

January 26, 2025

Cairo: The Prophet’s Mosque in the Saudi city of Medina, received 5.6 million worshippers last week amid a seamless network of services and care provided by a state agency in charge of the place, Islam's second holiest mosque.

The figure included 390,000 who visited and prayed at Al Rawda Al Sharifa where the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) is located in the mosque, the General Authority for Care of the Prophet’s Mosque said.

The visits were made according to crowd-management rules and separate schedules set for women and men.

Saudi authorities have repeatedly stressed that visitors to Al Rawda Al Sharifa must make prior reservations before arriving at the revered site, and show up according to the fixed appointment to get smooth access.

Some 959 non-Arabic-speaking worshippers last week benefited from multilingual communication services available in the mosque, the agency's latest figures showed.

Sterilisation and disinfection works were, meanwhile, carried out across the sprawling site with the use of 24,053 litres.

Over the past week, 350 tons of the Zamzam water and 167,382 fast-breaking (Iftar) meals were provided for worshippers at designated places in the mosque.

After performing the Umrah or minor pilgrimage in the Grand Mosque, Islam’s holiest site in the Saudi city of Mecca, many pilgrims would head to Medina to perform prayers in the Prophet’s Mosque and visit other Islamic landmarks in the city.

More than 280 million Muslims prayed in the mosque in 2023.

Shettima, Yusuf hail Tijjaniyya Islamic sect for preaching peace, unity in Nigeria

 January 26, 2025

By Maduabuchi Nmeribeh/Kano

Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima and Kano state Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, in their separate messages on Saturday, praised the Tijjaniyya Islamic sect, for using their doctrine and religious teachings to promote peace and unity in Nigeria.

The two prominent Nigerian leaders spoke during the National Tijjaniyya Maulud held at Sani Abacha stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano.

Our Correspondent reports that an unprecedented crowd of Tijjaniyya followers graced the ceremony which was also attended by notable Islamic clerics, politicians and business magnets.

The venue of the event which was earlier sealed by security agencies was left open after a protest press conference by the state Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, held at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Friday night.

Police in Kano had earlier on Friday warned against large gatherings of people, citing intelligence reports on possible terrorist attack on Kano.

Sani Abacha stadium was blocked by security agencies minutes after a police warning, apparently to stop the Tijjaniyya sect Maulud ceremony which attracted followers from other parts of the country.

But the Kano state government through a Press Conference by Waiya and the state Commissioner of Religious Affairs countered the position of the police, insisting that the religious ceremony must be held as there were no obvious security threats in Kano at the moment.

The 16th Emir of Kano and former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Muhammad Sanusi 11 also graced the occasion that recorded the gathering of a mammoth crowd.

The Vice President made the commendation while speaking at the 2025 Maulud celebration for the late Shiek Ibrahim Niass, the spiritual leader of the Tijjaniyya sect.

VP Shettima, who was represented by Alhaji Babagana Fannami, praised the Muslim sect for standing over the past century in the true teachings of Islam.

Shettima, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion, eulogised the guiding principles of the ‘Sufi’ sect to humanity.

The Vice President linked the unwavering tenacity of the Tijjaniyya sect to the lessons of Prophet Muhammad rather than compromising matters of the jurisprudence of Islam.

He, therefore, reminded Muslims to emulate the true teachings of Islam and avoid extremism.

The Chief Host, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, equally lauded the efforts of the Tijjaniyya sect in maintaining peace and harmonious relationships with other sects in Nigeria.

“As your host, we have to appreciate all of you for coming to Kano from far and near to attend this year’s mauled for Sheik Ibrahim Niass,” he said.

Emir  Muhammadu Sanusi II, who doubles as the National Leader of the Tijjaniyya in Nigeria, prayed for the unity of Muslims around the globe and advocated for tolerance with believers of other faiths.

Tight Security At Lagos Assembly Complex As Obasa, Meranda Claims Speakership

27 January 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

The Lagos State House of Assembly has heightened security at its complex as lawmakers gather for a plenary session today (Monday).

Speculation is rife about a potential showdown as the embattled former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, continues to assert his position despite being removed on January 13, 2025.

Obasa was impeached by a majority of the House members over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, with Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda taking over the role.

Today’s plenary marks the third session presided over by Meranda, with Obasa notably absent from the previous sittings.

Addressing his supporters on Saturday, Obasa, who had been outside Lagos since his impeachment, maintained that he remains the Speaker until due process is followed.

“My status in the House? I believe strongly I am still the Speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it,” Obasa stated.

The former Speaker also denied allegations of financial misconduct, describing them as baseless and impossible.

He dismissed claims that he misappropriated ?16 billion for a gate and ?40 billion for 40 Hilux vehicles.

“Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with ?16 billion? It is not the wall of Jericho or the wall that demarcated the United States of America and Mexico,” Obasa said.

When asked by journalists if he plans to challenge his impeachment legally, Obasa hinted at a possible court battle, saying, “You will know. It’s a matter of time.”

Speaking to a crowd of supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in GRA, Ikeja, he expressed gratitude for their dedication while vowing to clear his name.

“I will debunk all the allegations levelled against me by the House. I have not done anything wrong. I have been a lawmaker for over two decades and I am the longest-serving lawmaker in the House,” he declared.

Assembly Braces for Potential Showdown

Today’s plenary is expected to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing leadership tussle. With Obasa doubling down on his claims of legitimacy and Meranda presiding as the recognized Speaker, tensions remain high.

In a notice issued from the acting Clerk’s office on Sunday, staff members and legislative aides were advised to come to the complex with a means of identification.

The notice said anyone without a valid ID would be denied entry into the assembly premises.

“Regarding management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises. Please remember that entry will be denied to anyone without a valid identity card,” the short notice read.

Lagos Police Reacts To Security Threat

The Lagos State Police Command has also said it will maintain order in the state irrespective of what transpires at the assembly on Monday.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olawale, in an interview with Punch on Sunday, said as much as the police had no business inside the assembly, it was his duty to maintain the calmness outside the assembly and everywhere in the state.

According to him, there won’t be any breakdown of law and order in the state.

He said, “That will not happen. I don’t see any breakdown of law in the state and if there is, it is inside the assembly and I am not allowed to enter the assembly. But outside the assembly, there won’t be any breakdown of law and order in Lagos State, in whatever location because that’s my job as a policeman.

“People will genuinely move about with their businesses, but anybody congregating anywhere to foment trouble will be decisively dispersed, and if they don’t (cooperate), they will be arrested if they conduct themselves in an unruly manner. Everyone has the right to assembly but there is also what we call law and order.”

‘What Obasa Did Was Contrary To Discussion With President Tinubu’

 27 January 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Today’s sitting of the Lagos State House of Assembly is set to be heated as two presiding officers, Mojisola Meranda and Mudashiru Obasa, continue to claim leadership of the legislative chamber.

With both factions unwilling to back down, the political crisis appears to be deepening.

Naija News understands that the crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of the 40 lawmakers reportedly removed Obasa as Speaker over allegations of misconduct and mismanagement of funds.

However, Obasa, who returned from a vacation abroad over the weekend, has declared his impeachment unconstitutional and insists he remains the legitimate Speaker.

Addressing supporters and members of the Mandate Movement at his official residence in Ikeja, Obasa stated, “I am not afraid of being removed; after all, it is not my father’s chieftaincy title. I am representing my people, and they have returned me six times. If you want to do anything, do it well.”

He further accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of orchestrating an invasion of both the State Assembly and his private residence in Agege on the day of his removal.

Obasa condemned what he described as a break from the Assembly’s traditions, citing past leadership changes, “When former Speaker Jokotola Pelumi was removed, he was in the Assembly, and we did not invite policemen. When my sister, former Deputy Speaker Adefunmilayo Tejuosho was removed, we did not involve the police.”

Expressing gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) for their support, Obasa called for the protection of the Assembly’s reputation, “The Lagos State House of Assembly is above the common standard of excellence. I believe in the image of our institution. We must not destroy it, and I will never partake in its destruction.”

Pro-Meranda Lawmakers Stand Their Ground

In response, Obasa’s opponents within the Assembly reiterated their loyalty to Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker.

Former House Committee Chairman on Information and Security, Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, released a statement asserting the lawmakers’ united stance, “Over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are solidly united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. We stand by the decision taken on January 13 and shall defend our positions to the letter.”

The statement emphasized the lawmakers’ commitment to good governance and harmony with other arms of government.

Meanwhile, members of the GAC have reportedly advised Obasa to challenge his removal in court if he believes the impeachment process was flawed.

In a related development, one of the lawmakers who accompanied Obasa to a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu revealed to TheGuardian that the embattled Speaker failed to uphold their agreement with the President.

According to him, “The President did not fault the impeachment and as a democrat he wouldn’t do that. We were only told to allow Obasa to remove his belongings from the Speaker’s quarter at Isaac John Ikeja without putting him under any form of pressure.

“What Obasa did on Saturday by granting a press conference and also ranting about remaining the Speaker was contrary to what was expected of him.”

26 January 2025

By Oladipo Abiola

An encounter between operatives of the Nigerian Military and terrorists in Borno State has resulted in the death of 22 soldiers and over 70 insurgents.

This was confirmed in a statement on Sunday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba.

The encounter between the insurgents and the military occurred in a notorious terrorist stronghold in Borno State known as the Timbuktu Triangle.

Naija News reports the operation, which was carried out by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, began on January 16, 2025, and has focused on dismantling terrorist enclaves in the region, according to the DHQ.

He said, “Troops of Operation HADIN KAI in the Northeast of the country conducted a clearance operation to a renowned terrorist stronghold and enclave known as the Timbuktu Triangle. The three-prong operation aimed at dismantling the terrorist presence within the triangle commenced on 16 Jan 25 till date.

“Troops recorded several encounters with terrorists during the course of the clearance operations, which resulted in over 70 terrorist combatants, including three notable terrorist commanders, neutralised. The terrorist commanders neutralised include and are not limited to the following: TALHA (Terrorist Special Forces Commander), Mallam UMAR (Terrorist Operations commander) and ?ABU YAZEED (Terrorist Brigade Commander).“

The DHQ spokesperson said the military successfully repelled various lethal tactics, including the use of Improvised Explosive Devices, suicide bombers, and drones deployed by the terrorists.

He also confirmed the loss of 22 soldiers in the process and pleaded with the media to exercise restraint in publishing their names pending when their families would be officially notified.

Buba said, “Meanwhile, during the operations, the terrorist deployed Improvised Explosive Devices, Person Bourne Improvised Explosive Devices (suicide bombers) as well as Vehicle Bourne Improvised Explosive Devices (suicide bombers in explosive vehicles) to ward off troops advance and attacks.

“Troops already familiar with the terrorist tactics thwarted several terrorist attempts, including shooting down the amateur drones used by the terrorist.”

“Overall, during the course of the operations, troops sadly recorded 22 killed in action casualties with several others wounded in action. On this account, the media is enjoined to resist publishing names of troop casualties to allow the formal notification of their next of kin.”

Thousands flee Goma during intense fighting in DRC

26 January 2025

Thousands of people are fleeing camps on the outskirts of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as fighting intensifies between Rwanda-backed rebels and government forces. The M23 rebel group has made significant territorial gains, closing in on the key eastern city.

Adèle Shimiye, a displaced person, shared her fear: “We hear bombs from all sides. That’s why I fled – I don’t want to die there. We’re heading to Goma, but I heard there are bombs there too, so we don’t know where to go.”

The conflict has already claimed the lives of at least 13 peacekeepers and foreign soldiers, while also displacing thousands of civilians. Earlier this week, rebels seized the town of Sake, just 27 kilometres from Goma.

Masika Kambale, another displaced person, expressed frustration with the government’s response, saying: “If President Tshisekedi can’t lead, he should step aside. We can’t run every day.”

Experts warn that the fall of Goma would be a huge victory for the rebels, but disastrous for the local population.

In conjunction with Israk Mikraj celebration today, PM Anwar calls on Muslims to cultivate stronger work ethic

27 Jan 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 — Muslims in Malaysia are called to reflect on the profound experience of Prophet Muhammad SAW during the Isra’ and Mikraj journey by fostering a stronger work ethic and discipline to achieve itqan fil amal (excellence in work) while remaining steadfast in their devotion to Allah SWT.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the spiritual journey granted to the Prophet carried with it the responsibility of prayer, leaving a significant impact on the inner strength and spirit of the Muslim community.

“The leadership of Prophet Muhammad SAW in leading prayers among other prophets symbolises the importance of the Muslim ummah being guided under the leadership of the Prophet SAW,” he said in a social media post in conjunction with the Isra’ and Mikraj celebration today.

Anwar added that the lessons from this significant event are crucial in the context of Islamic history, particularly the roles of the two holy cities, Mecca and Baitulmuqaddis.

In this regard, he stressed that the plight and prayers for the oppressed Palestinian people, who continue to face colonisation, should remain an unwavering commitment in advocating for their dignity and justice.

Isra’ Mikraj, commemorated by Muslims worldwide on 27 Rejab of the Hijri calendar each year, marks a pivotal event when obligatory prayers were decreed, and Prophet Muhammad SAW witnessed the greatness of Allah. — Bernama

Malay Dignity, Strength Built On Foundations Of Islamic Values - Anwar

27/01/2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (Bernama) — The primacy of Malay dignity and the inherent strength of Malay society are built on the foundations of Islamic values, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasised that this is an aspect which needs reiteration today, noting that it was highlighted in several books written by the Royal Professor Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas. “This is an aspect which needs reiteration, particularly in this day and age, rather than partake of the self-induced delusion of ‘Malays losing power’ and the consequential chest-thumping hysteria in asserting ‘Ketuanan Melayu’,” he said. He was speaking at an extempore speech on 'Islam: the Covenants Fulfilled' by Syed Muhammad Naquib at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) tonight. Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Prof Dr Alparslan Acikgenc from Ibn Khaldun University, Turkiye. Anwar said Syed Muhammad Naquib's great works served as the reminder of the Islamic outlook on life-based on the overarching dominion of the core civilisational values of justice, culture, freedom, morality and societal progress. “Above all, the call to overcome ignorance with knowledge, to go into the light from darkness, all these being the absolutely essential building blocks of a noble and great civilisation,” he said. Anwar said the government will take the initiative to enhance the Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas Library at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC), with its current collection estimated at more than 150,000 titles. “Let us pray that future generations will draw inspiration and benefit from our quintessential Islamic scholar, our teacher par excellence, our beloved Royal Professor Naquib Al-Attas,” he said. As one of Syed Muhammad Naquib’s devoted pupils, Anwar said the scholar inspired him to go the extra mile, step out of his comfort zone of books and studies, and take action to make things happen. He said the scholar’s book on Islam and Secularism, published more than four decades ago, has had a lasting impression on him, and believes that it remains compellingly relevant today. -- BERNAMA

26/01/2025

May we all draw lessons from this significant event, and remain steadfast in strengthening our faith and devotion to the Almighty.Ahmad Zahid also extended his greetings to all Muslims in Malaysia on the occasion of Israk Mikraj 1446H, which will be observed tomorrow. Israk and Mikraj are miraculous events, bestowed by Allah SWT upon Prophet Muhammad SAW on the night of the 27th of Rejab. It was the night that Allah had decreed upon the Prophet Muhammad the obligatory five prayers daily for Muslims. Montreal Blood Drive Marks Muslim Awareness Week, Commemorates 2017 Quebec City Mosque Attack Victims

By Anastasia Dextrene

January 26, 2025

Give blood to share blood is the slogan for this year’s Muslim Awareness Week blood drive in Montreal.

“It’s our duty to commemorate the victims who fell. Unfortunately, the assailant spilled their blood without any reason,” Salam El-Mousawi, the co-founder of Muslim Awareness Week said in an interview.

With a heavy heart, El-Mousawi remembers the fear he felt when he got the call.

“The chief police officers [were] trying to calm us down to pass the message of everything [is] under control for the community because everyone was worried,” he said.

On Jan. 29, 2017, Alexandre Bissonnette killed six men at the Centre culturel islamique du Québec in Quebec City. The event sent shockwaves throughout Canada.

“It wasn’t far from us here in Montreal,” El-Mousawi said. “Victims, they left behind 18 widows, kids and family members. Some of them are now permanently paralyzed. So, this is part, a small part of our contribution.”

The event runs until Friday and representative, Faouzi Rezagui, said the process is easy.

Those interested can book an appointment online at any greater Montreal area branch of Hema Quebec.

“Every 80 seconds someone here in Quebec needs blood, so it makes like we need around 10,000 donations per day,” Rezagui said.

“Each blood donation [...] helps to save three lives,” he noted.

The drive is part of the 7th edition of Muslim Awareness Week’s larger programming. The list of events includes seminars at McGill University and a commemorative event at City Hall.

“It’s not only Muslim Awareness Week, it’s a small initiative,” El-Moussawi explained.

“It means collaboration of the three governmental levels, as well as all the organizations, media, institutions,” he added.

The week’s launch comes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the families of the six men who were killed in the mosque attack.

Trudeau is reported to have spoken individually with each of those present.

El-Mousawi said he hopes Muslim Awareness Week will inspire understanding and compassion to help prevent another tragedy.

Trump’s 2017 Muslim ban is back—and even worse this time around

January 27, 2025

During Donald Trump’s executive order-signing spree Monday, the convicted felon signed one in particular that experts and civil rights groups believe is just a beefed up version of his 2017 Muslim ban.

The executive order, titled “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats,” calls for foreign visitors to be vetted to the “maximum degree possible.”

But bolstering up the vetting process isn’t the concern. Rather, it’s who the vetting process is going to be targeting.

“The Trump administration seems intent on banning travel from certain countries, likely along the lines of his 2017 Muslim travel ban,” Faiza Patel, senior director of liberty and national security at the Brennan Center for Justice, told Daily Kos.

“But it has learned the lesson of its first term,” she added, referring to the executive order Trump signed right after taking office in 2017, which left travelers confused and stranded at border customs.

The 2017 ban targeted five Muslim majority countries as well as North Korea and Venezuela. And while it was challenged almost immediately after it was issued, the Supreme Court later upheld a thrice-revised version of the ban just over a year later.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) has sounded the alarm on another aspect of the executive order, claiming that it gives the administration the ability to discriminate on the basis of ideology or religious beliefs.

“The new order goes a step further than its 2017 predecessor by adding language that opens the door to ideological exclusion by allowing the government to deny visas or entry based on perceived political opinions, religious beliefs, or cultural backgrounds,” the ADC said in a statement.

The order also appears to give officials the ability to remove foreign visitors who are in the United States legally on the basis of where they are from or what they worship.

Adding to his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Trump has been under massive scrutiny for his executive order to end birthright citizenship, which is given to children of immigrants born in the United States and is enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

As it stands, it is unclear if this will be deemed constitutional.

Additionally, Trump suspended asylum programs at the U.S.-Mexico border, fulfilling his racist campaign promise.

Trump’s end to the asylum programs—which are typically granted to people seeking safety from dangerous home lives—also shut out immigrants who were already in the process of gaining asylum.

This, too, could face challenges in court.

Trump ally criticises pardons for violent Jan 6 offenders

January 27, 2025

A top Trump ally in the Senate has criticised President Donald Trump's decision to issue a blanket pardon for his nearly 1,600 supporters arrested for their role in the Capitol riot on 6 January, 2021.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, said on Sunday it was a "mistake" to pardon or commute the sentences of "people who went into the Capitol and beat up a police officer violently".

At least 600 rioters were charged with assaulting or obstructing law enforcement officers in connection with the attack at the US Capitol.

Vice-president JD Vance defended the pardons on Sunday, saying Trump had "made the right decision".

It was a reversal for Vance, who said two weeks ago that "if you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn't be pardoned".

The shift reflects a wider dilemma for Republican lawmakers brought by the executive order: Either defend the pardons - which appear unpopular with voters - or oppose them and potentially face Trump's ire.

A recent Associated Press survey suggests that only two in 10 Americans approve of pardoning most of those involved in the attack.

Graham acknowledged that the president "has that power" in an interview with CNN on Sunday, but he said he did not approve of its use by Trump or his predecessor - Joe Biden.

Just before leaving office last week, the former president pardoned members of his own family and an indigenous-rights activist who was involved in a shootout that killed two FBI agents.

"I don't like it on either side, and I don't think the public likes it, either," he told CNN.

Graham said he had spoken to Trump about the order and suggested that Congress may have to review the presidential pardon power in general.

Earlier in Trump's first week, Republicans such as Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski and former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell expressed their displeasure over the president's order.

Still, other Republicans have come to Trump's defence.

"The president's made his decision. I don't second-guess those," House Speaker Mike Johnson said this week.

"It's kind of my ethos, my worldview: We believe in redemption. We believe in second chances," Johnson added. "You could argue that those people didn't pay that heavy penalty, having been incarcerated and all of that. That's up to you. But the president's made a decision. We move forward."

And on Sunday, Vice-President Vance told Margaret Brennan of CBS, the BBC's US partner, that Trump made the right decision pardoning and commuting the sentences of the rioters.

"We looked at 1,600 cases and the thing that came out of it... is that there was a massive denial of due process of liberty, and a lot of people were denied their constitutional rights," Vance said, adding that the Department of Justice's prosecution of the rioters was "politically motivated".

"The president believes that. I believe that and I think he made the right decision," he said. "We rectified a wrong and I stand by it".

Republicans, such as Senate majority leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, have sidestepped discussing Trump's Capitol riot order by maintaining that their focus is on the country's future.

Meanwhile, Trump's decision has not sat well with Democrats.

A group of Senate lawmakers on Monday will seek to pass a resolution that formally condemns the pardons of rioters convicted of assaulting police officers on the day of the Capitol attack, according to reporting from CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

"I refuse to allow President Trump to rewrite what happened on January 6 - armed insurrectionists, incited by Trump himself, broke into the U.S. Capitol and violently assaulted Capitol Police officers in their attempt to overthrow a free and fair election," said Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington state.

The resolution is unlikely to pass in the Republican-controlled Senate, but it could force lawmakers to take a public position on Trump's decision.

Most members of the president's party have been pleased with Trump's ambition to fulfill a long list of his campaign promises quickly by signing hundreds of execution actions.

In many instances, these actions reversed Biden-administration policies.

Trump halted foreign aid as part of his "America-First" foreign policy agenda, rescinded sanctions on extremist Israeli settlers and revoked a mandate that federal workers must be vaccinated against Covid.

"He's not sitting in the Oval Office doing nothing," Vance told CBS. "He's doing the American people's business, and I think they're going to see a lot of good effects from it."

Vance called it "an incredible breakneck pace of activity".

"I think the president is to be commended for actually coming in and doing something with this incredible mandate the American people gave him," he added.

Trump to sanction Colombia for refusing to take back illegal aliens

26 Jan, 2025

US President Donald Trump has said that he will impose emergency tariffs on Colombia and sanction its officials after Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused to allow American planes carrying deported illegal immigrants to land in the country.

“I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social app on Sunday, adding that he has directed his administration to take “urgent and decisive retaliatory measures.”

Trump went on to explain that he will place a 25% emergency tariff on all Colombian goods entering the US, which will be doubled in a week. The US is Colombia’s largest trading partner, with around $12 billion worth of Colombian goods entering the US every year.

Trump said that all Colombian government officials along with their “allies and supporters” would have their visas revoked and be subject to a travel ban, while visa sanctions would be applied to all members of Petro’s left-wing Human Colombia party and their families.

Colombian visitors to the US will be subject to enhanced inspections by Customs and Border Protection agents, he continued, adding that financial sanctions will also be imposed on Bogota.

“These measures are just the beginning,” he concluded. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!”

Earlier on Sunday, Petro said that he would not allow any deportation flights to land in Colombia until the US guarantees the “dignified treatment” of deported migrants. Petro did not state what he meant by “dignified treatment.”

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been carrying out daily raids across the US since Trump took office on Monday, with 421 people detained for removal on Saturday alone, according to the agency. Cities targeted included Boston, New York, Newark, and San Francisco, and agents focused on arresting immigrants who had committed subsequent crimes after entering the US illegally, ICE said.

In a statement on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that “deportation flights have begun.” Two military aircraft carried 160 people to Guatemala that day, while another three flights to Guatemala and four flights to Mexico took off on Friday.

It is unclear how many Colombian nationals are currently awaiting deportation.

Two killed, seven hurt in Khuzdar bus blast

Abdul Wahid Shahwani

January 27, 2025

KHUZDAR: Two people were killed and seven others injured in a car bomb explosion close to a passenger bus travelling from Khuzdar to Rawalpindi, in the Khori area on the Khuzdar-Shahdadkot highway, on Sunday.

According to Levies officials, the powerful blast took place when the bus was passing through the area, where a car laden with explosives was parked.

Kalat Division Commissioner Naeem Bazai confirmed to Dawn that two people were killed in the explosion. However, he said, “Investigation is underway to determine the nature of the blast.”

Khuzdar Assistant Commissioner Hafizullah Kakar earlier said, “One passenger was killed on the spot, while six others injured in the blast.” Bus driver and cleaner were among the injured, he said, adding that the bus was badly damaged while the car was completely destroyed.

Levies and other security personnel along with a bomb disposal squad rushed to the site soon after receiving information about the explosion and shifted the body and the injured to the trauma centre of Khuzdar teaching hospital.

However, the seriously injured cleaner later died at hospital, while the other victims were shifted to CMH, Khuzdar.

The deceased were identified as Shiraz and Sanaullah, while the injured were later identified as Mohammad Ikram, Atif, Mohammad Yousaf, Samiur Rehman, Zia and Irfan.

Two of the injured are said to be in serious condition.

Later, bomb disposal squad officials visited the site to collect evidence. A senior official said that the target was apparently the passenger bus coming from Khuzdar.

Govt, PTI trade blame over 'stalled talks' as judicial commission remains sticking point

By Haider Sherazi

January 26, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday exchanged blame over "deadlock in negotiations" as the formation of judicial commission, a key demand of the former ruling party, becomes a bone of contention.

"As per the agreed communique, no response can be given before seven-day deadline...we will respond to PTI's demand for judicial commission at the next round of talks on Jan 28," PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui — who is also the spokesperson for the government negotiation committee — said while speaking to Geo News.

Uncertainty looms over the future of the negotiations, facilitated by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, as conflicting statements emerge from the embattled former ruling party with PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan saying ongoing talks were put on hold, a shift from the party’s earlier announcement of calling them off.

The PTI “called off” the negotiation process due to “non-cooperation” of the government and delay over the formation of a judicial commission to probe the May 9, 2023 violent protests and a crackdown on party protesters in Islamabad on November 26 last year.

The PTI and the ruling coalition have been engaged in talks aimed at defusing political tensions in the country for nearly a month. Both sides have held three rounds of talks so far.

The dialogue process hit a snag as the Khan-founded party is of the view that they would attend the fourth round of talks only if the government formed the judicial commission while the ruling alliance stated that they would give their written response to the PTI’s demand in the next round of negotiation.

However, a day earlier, PTI founder Imran Khan demanded a meeting with his party's negotiation committee, with sources claiming that the final stance regarding the negotiations would be given after the meeting.

Speaking to Geo News today, Siddiqui lambasted the Imran-founded party for ending the talks unilaterally, saying that the abrupt end was a surprise not only for the committee but also for the PTI itself.

"Barrister Gohar previously cited Imran's message for calling off the negotiations... Later in the evening, they put forward a justification that the police raided [Sunni Ittehad Council chief] Sahibzada Hamid Raza's house," he noted.

He added Raza used the words "absolutely not" for negotiations. "We are ready for the Jan 28 meeting...we will not respond to PTI's threats or boycotts," he warned.

Barrister Gohar — while talking to Geo News — said that the government delayed the start of negotiations and also delayed the formation of the commission. "If the government is serious about the talks, take one positive step and we will talk to Imran," he said.

According to PTI Chairman, the negotiation process has officially ended after the competition of seven-day deadline. He noted that the government can announce the formation of judicial commission and his party would look into it.

"If the government asks us to sit on the commission's TORs [terms of references], we will talk to the PTI founder," he concluded.

‘Talks are over now’

Separately, PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram ruled out continuing negotiations with the government, saying that they are now over.

"We opted out of the negotiations after witnessing the government's behaviour," he said, claiming that they were not serious about the negotiations.

In response to a question about PTI re-initiating talks, he said that party chairman Barrister Gohar and secretary general Salman Akram Raja must have spoken about the announcement of the commission and its terms of reference (TORs) in "good will".

"Talks are over...we do not want to continue talks with the government in any respect," he said, adding that even if a judicial commission is formed, the party would look into it.

Responding to another question, he said that the government's statement about PTI recognising its mandate is "a complete lie", noting the charter of demands mentioned that "free and transparent elections are essential for broad-based negotiations."

Pakistan to host 9th AMAN exercise with regional maritime security in focus

January 26, 2025

The Pakistan Navy will host AMAN-25, the 9th edition of the multinational AMAN (Peace) exercise, scheduled from February 7 to 11.

A key feature of this year’s exercise will be the AMAN Dialogue, where chiefs of naval forces, heads of coast guards, and senior leaders from around the world will convene to discuss regional maritime security and devise joint strategies to counter evolving maritime threats, a statement issued by the Pakistan Navy's public relations director general said.

Around 60 countries will participate in AMAN-25, contributing with ships, aircraft, Special Operations Forces (SOF), Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, marines, and observers.

Delegations from across the globe will also attend the inaugural International AMAN Dialogue, which will take place alongside the exercise.

The AMAN series has been a hallmark of the Pakistan Navy’s efforts to promote regional peace and cooperation.

Launched in 2007, the inaugural exercise saw the participation of 28 countries. By 2023, the number of participating nations had grown to 50, including major naval powers.

The motto of the AMAN series — “Together for Peace" — reflects its core mission, while this year’s theme, “Secure Seas; Prosperous Future,” emphasises the importance of maritime security for global prosperity.

AMAN exercise consists of harbour and sea phases.

During the harbour phase, activities such as seminars, operational discussions, counter-terrorism demonstrations, and pre-sail planning of evolutions at sea will be held.

The sea phase would include tactical manoeuvres, exercises related to maritime security such as anti-piracy and counter-terrorism, search and rescue, gunnery firings and air defence exercises.

The highlight of the sea phase will be the International Fleet Review, which will be witnessed by national and foreign dignitaries.

Govt promises PTI written response by tomorrow

Syed Irfan Raza | Ikram Junaidi

January 27, 2025

• Irfan Siddiqui says Imran’s party had agreed to wait seven working days for their answer

• Opposition party demands immediate appointment of new chief election commissioner

• PTI spox denies ‘rifts’ after Gandapur replaced

ISLAMABAD: Despite mixed signals from the PTI, the government on Sunday refused to budge from its position on talks with the opposition party, reiterating that it would present written replies to their charter of demands during the next meeting, scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, the opposition party has demanded the immediate appointment of a new chief election commissioner, as the incumbent Sikandar Sultan Raja’s tenure came to an end on Sunday.

The PTI ‘abandoned’ the negotiation process a couple of days ago after the government side did not respond to its demand to form judicial commissions to probe the May 9, 2023 and Nov 26, 2024 protests the party had held for the release of its jailed founder Imran Khan.

On Saturday, however, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said that he had a detailed meeting with the party founder, during which the latter showed an interest in meeting the PTI negotiation committee.

The government claimed on Sunday that PTI had left the dialogue process, despite an agreement that the former would submit its response to the PTI’s demands within seven working days, meaning Jan 28.

“We are not ready to be ridiculed (by announcing our replies publicly or before the media). We will present our replies before the committee in the forthcoming meeting,” asserted Senator Irfan Siddiqui, spokesperson for the government’s negotiation team, in a statement.

Mr Siddiqui quoted Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as saying Imran Khan had directed the party to leave the talks as the government was not sincere in forming judicial commissions.

“We cannot reply (to the PTI’s demands) before the 28th. We will neither give our replies nor make any announcement regarding the [judicial] commissions before [the end of] seven days,” he added.

On the other hand, Barrister Gohar in a statement said that although PTI had quit the dialogue process, he could convince Imran Khan to again join the talks, if the government agreed to hold talks on the terms of reference (TORs) of the judicial commissions.

Tarnishing ECP image

Earlier in the day, PTI called upon the government to immediately appoint an honest, unbiased and neutral chief election commissioner (CEC) in a transparent manner in consultation with the party to revitalise the poll watchdog’s “badly tarnished integrity” and ensure the continuity of democratic processes in the country.

The demand coincided with the ending of the tenure of CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja on Sunday.

The outgoing chief’s era left an indelible mark on the country’s electoral landscape, asserted PTI’s Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqqas Akram in a statement.

Therefore, he added, it was incumbent upon the government to ensure a timely and consensus-based appointment of the CEC as well as the provincial heads of the institution to shield it from “further destruction”.

Mr Akram emphasised the need for the government to constitute a parliamentary committee without any delay to oversee these appointments, as stipulated in Article 213 of the constitution.

Mr Akram also dismissed reports of divisions within the PTI’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, emphasising that the party remains a cohesive and unified force under the leadership of Imran Khan.

It may be recalled that KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who also headed the party’s provincial chapter, was replaced by MNA Junaid Akbar Khan a day earlier.

Media bodies seek Senate panel hearing on changes to Peca law

January 27, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing all major media stakeholders, has asked the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior for a hearing before the committee debates recently introduced amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca).

On Thursday, the National Assembly passed the controversial amendments to Peca, introduced as a supplementary agenda item just a day earlier, and the bill is now with the Senate.

A letter, addressed to Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman, said the JAC wanted to put before the Senate committee “our serious concerns on certain aspects of this bill which seriously impede freedom of expression”.

“We urge you to give the representatives of JAC a hearing before the committee debates the above-mentioned amendment bill,” it added.

The JAC said the bill was introduced without any consultation or discussion with relevant stakeholders, including media and journalist organisations, adding that the committee, however, was not against laws that regulated media in a manner consistent with democratic norms.

In a comment on the haste with which the bill was rushed through the lower house of parliament, the letter said, “Such an approach erodes trust and raises serious concerns about the intent behind the bill, particularly its impact on constitutionally guaranteed rights such as freedom of expression and freedom of the press.”

The JAC consists of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND), and the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA).

CM Maryam warns field cops of consequences for showing poor performance

Asif Chaudhry

January 27, 2025

LAHORE: Expressing concern at surging crime rate in Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reprimanded the city and district police officers for not taking preemptive measures to stop killings and control other crimes in the province, warning them that those showing below average performance would be removed from their positions.

During a meeting attended by Punjab IGP Dr Usman Anwar, Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana, all the city and district police officers and others from top leadership of the provincial police Additional Secretary Law & Order to Chief Minister Zeeshan Raza stressed on improvement in the crime situation.

At this, a source said CCPO Kamyana said what else the police should do as it had already brought the crime rate down by 44 percent.

The source said that the CM said she would not go by the figures, and would rather want police to improve their performance to the public’s satisfaction.

She showed her utter displeasure over the low conviction rate, particularly in drug selling and street crime cases, he said.

Ms Nawaz also mentioned frequent incidents of murders reported in parts of Punjab, saying she was least interested merely in crime statistics gathered by the police, adding that lives could be saved by taking preemptive measures.

“I have done a lot to depoliticise the Punjab police, but still the crime is on the rise,” she was quoted as having said.

She further told the meeting that she had given “complete autonomy” to police officers in the transfer and posting matters by discouraging the interference of the MNAs and MPAs in this respect.

At this, the IGP expressed his apprehension that the chief minister was receiving more complaints from the parliamentarians regarding law and order as the police high-ups have stopped entertaining them with regard to transfers and postings of the police officers of their (parliamentarians’) choice.

The CM told the police officers that the Punjab government has so far provided the department “all they had demanded”, including hefty funds and logistic support to improve service delivery.

The official said that the CM also questioned the officers individually about their performance and mentioned the recent incidents of murder and major street crimes district-wise.

It became an embarrassing situation for many of the DPOs as they were not fully prepared to update the CM on such incidents occurring in their respective jurisdictions, the official said.

He said Ms Nawaz chided the Gujrat DPO over serious complaints of corruption and pathetic police performance in the district.

Similarly, she reprimanded the Rawalpindi CPO for being lowest with regard to performance in the Group-I, which also comprised Gujranwala, Multan and Faisalabad.

She also expressed her displeasure over the crime situation in Nankana Sahib district and told the DPO that he had consistently been showing below-average performance for the last six months or so.

About Rahim Yar Khan, the CM said the district police performance was not up to the mark. The source says the DPO, however, tried to satisfy Ms Nawaz by pointing out that a most-wanted criminal bearing head money was killed in an “encounter” in the district. The CM, however, rejected the DPO’s claim and suggested him to focus on bring improvement in law and order as per the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), rather than taking pride in a single incident.

During the meeting, the CM appreciated the performance of the CPOs and DPOs of Vehari, Gujranwala, Sahiwal and Kasur for securing top positions as per the KPIs she had designed to judge the police officers’ performance.

The official said that as the additional secretary (law & order) took up the matter of police officers being ignored in award of cash reward given to five deputy commissioners for showing outstanding performance, Ms Nawaz promised that they would also get the honorarium, but warned that those failing to meet the KPIs would be transferred..

Ex-home minister Kamal a 'butcher' of Bangladesh: Shafiqul Alam

Jan 26, 2025

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has sharply criticised the media outlets that are giving platforms to people like former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, describing Kamal as the "butcher" of Bangladesh.

"Asaduzzamn Khan Kamal is the butcher of Bangladesh," he said today, referring to the killings of children, students, workers and rickshaw-pullers.

Responding to a question at a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the evening, Alam said no one in the world gives a platform to a "butcher" and interviews a "butcher".

"You can realise the quality of those who are giving him a platform," said the press secretary, adding that it is a big international propaganda campaign.

CA's deputy press secretaries Apurba Jahangir and Abul Kalam Azad Majumder were also present at the briefing where the press secretary shared the highlights of CA's engagements at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

The chief adviser yesterday arrived in Dhaka from Switzerland after attending the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos where he was hailed as a "beacon, hero and an amazing image of stability."

The interview of fugitive mass-murder accused Asaduzzamn Khan Kamal carried by The Indian Express is full of lies and misinformation, said the CA's press wing.

Kamal, a close associate of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is reportedly hiding in India, is one of the masterminds of the July-August killings.

Indian Express carried his lies without verifying the information, the press wing said.

Iran’s FM discusses Bilateral Issues with Taliban officials in Kabul

ByFidel Rahmati

January 27, 2025

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, during his visit to  Kabul, stated that there are certain concerns from Afghanistan that need to be addressed. He made this remark in a meeting with Taliban officials.

The Iranian foreign minister described the purpose of his trip as fostering greater engagement and relations with the Taliban government.

Araghchi noted that key topics of discussion included ensuring Afghanistan’s water rights from the Helmand River, combating drug trafficking, border security, and the return of Afghan refugees to their homeland.

He emphasized that the Taliban have committed to cooperating on these issues, and Iran has maintained good relations with the group since their takeover of Afghanistan.

On Monday, January 27, the Tasnim News Agency released a video of Araghchi’s statements to the media regarding his visit.

Araghchi also mentioned that he held constructive meetings with senior Taliban officials and highlighted Iran’s foreign policy focus on strengthening bilateral relations with neighboring countries.

The Iranian minister stressed that any developments in Afghanistan have a direct impact on Iran, underlining the importance of close engagement with the Taliban government.

This marks Araghchi’s first visit to Afghanistan, signaling a continuation of Iran’s diplomatic outreach despite not officially recognizing the Taliban government.

Although Iran has yet to officially recognize the Taliban regime, it has maintained a pragmatic relationship with the group, focusing on shared interests such as border security and economic cooperation. Tehran views the absence of Western countries in Afghanistan as beneficial to its national interests.

Iran’s ongoing engagement with the Taliban highlights its strategic interests in Afghanistan, focusing on issues such as water rights, border security, and regional stability. Despite these efforts, unresolved challenges, including security threats and economic concerns, continue to pose significant obstacles to bilateral cooperation.

While Iran seeks to strengthen its influence in Afghanistan and leverage the absence of Western powers, uncertainties remain regarding the Taliban’s governance capabilities and their commitment to regional agreements. Tehran’s cautious approach reflects its desire to maintain stability while protecting its national interests in the evolving geopolitical landscape.

Conspiracies cannot undermine nation-supported Islamic system

January 27, 2025

The Afghan nation underwent many difficulties and hardships and left behind dark days and bitter times in the course of history. During the past twenty years of corrupt regimes, the country experienced a transition in governance characterized by the emergence of various power centers controlled by local warlords, tribal leaders, or influential individuals, who operated independently and had their own systems of governance, unless to obey the laws and orders of their central governments. This was why the central government’s efforts failed to establish a unified and effective government in the country, where the former foreign-backed governments have not been successful in their work to integrate these power centers into the national governance structure through disarmament, strengthening of local institutions, and promoting inclusivity and representation. So, power centers continued to exert significant influence, engaging in illicit activities and exacerbating ethnic and tribal tensions, besides hindering economic development and foreign investment. Over the past two decades of foreign aggressions and military invasions of superpowers to devastating proxy wars and internal hostilities, the country has been severely damaged and its entire properties have been destroyed. Particularly, the recent occupation of the country by the United States and its NATO allies has turned the country into a place of horror and terror. But, we are now witnessing an independent and free Afghanistan, under the Islamic system. The defeated enemies are now trying to conspire once again and disrupt the freedom and security of the country and somehow replace their hated agents. The malicious groups should understand that the brave Afghan nation with strong determination will never allow the country to fall prey to the enemies’ conspiracy as they are not only satisfied with their system, but they want to defend and protect it, as they have fought for this system during the decades of Jihad. Those working for the enemies of the country should have realized the fact that it is impossible to control Afghanistan with foreigners’ influence nor does a foreignbacked regime last long, as experiences proved during the former Soviet Union occupation and the recent Western and NATO invasion of the country. So, the Afghan people wanted to have a powerful military force to defend their religion, honor, land, and all cultural values in the country, fortunately, the Islamic Emirate has been a pioneer in this regard, and today, the country own experienced and skilled army, police and intelligence forces who are capable of defending the country’s territorial integrity and safeguard national unity. Any of the enemy’s plots would be foiled by close cooperation and coordination between the people and the officials of the Islamic Emirate. The so-called resistance groups whose reins are still in the hands of certain powers should realize that they are as weak as to fight for their vicious goals. So, the best option for them is that they should abandon arms and reintegrate and merge into the ruling system and take part in the reconstruction of the country instead of holding weapons and continuing their failed attempts.

Spate of hate crimes across London prompt police probe

26th January

By Olivia Carter

A school in Leyton has become the seventh Muslim venue in London to be targeted by hate crime in January, as police investigate a potential link.

Noor Ul Islam, a primary school in Dawlish Road, is the latest building to have been scrawled on with anti-Muslim graffiti.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were alerted to the criminal damage on January 25, two days after three mosques across east London were also targeted.

The incidents at Leyton Jamai Masjid, High Road, Stratford Islamic Association, Brydges Road, and Al-Birr Mosque in Church Road, Leyton were reported to police on January 23.

A photo of the graffiti written on the the Stratford Islamic Association was shared online, capturing the words "Stop Islam" across the front of the building.

The first of the incidents were reported to police on January 6, at the West Norwood Mosque in Norwood High Street, and the South Norwood Islamic Community Centre in Clifford Road.

A spokesperson for the Met has now confirmed that they will be investigating a potential link between the incidents that are being treated as hate crimes.

As part of their enquiries, officers will examine local CCTV footage and will be stepping up reassurance patrols in affected communities.

Dept Asst Com Jon Savell said: “We understand that Muslim communities will be feeling particularly concerned for their safety following this series of shocking hate crimes.

“Hate has no place on our streets, and tackling it is at the centre of our efforts to make Londoners from all backgrounds and communities feel safe.

“Our local officers will continue to work with community leaders and ensure that a thorough investigation is being conducted”.

The Newham Muslim Forum has called the incidents a "wake-up call", calling on politicians to act to tackle the "Dangerous, divisive rhetoric targeting Muslims and ethnic minorities".

The hate crimes have captured the attention of politicians, including the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz, and Uma Kumaran MP for Stratford and Bow.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 2370/25 Jan.

King to visit Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day

JANUARY 27, 2025

King Charles will become the first British head of state to visit Auschwitz when he tours the former Nazi concentration camp to mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation.

The King will travel to Poland to join survivors and other dignitaries at a service at the site of the former concentration camp, at the end of which he will lay a light of remembrance o honour those who lost their lives.

Sources close to the King say this is a profound visit for him with one aide describing it as a "deeply personal pilgrimage."

Back in the UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has renewed his commitment to ensure all schools teach pupils about the Holocaust, warning that society must "make 'never again' finally mean what it says".

He will join the Prince of Wales at the official commemorations in London to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Holocaust Memorial Day, which takes place on 27 January each year, remembers the six million Jews murdered during World War II.

It also commemorates the millions of people outside of the Jewish faith who were murdered through Nazi persecution and those targeted in more recent genocides.

Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest Nazi concentration camp and was at the centre of the Nazi campaign to eradicate Europe's Jewish population.

The King has long wanted to be present at Auschwitz for the liberation ceremony not just because of the significance of the anniversary but also to bear witness to the testimony of survivors in the location where so much suffering happened.

A palace source told the BBC: "There is no substitute for paying tribute at the very scene where the horrors took place."

In 1943, the King's grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece, saved a Jewish family by taking them into her home and hiding them in Nazi-occupied Athens - something the King has said brought him and the Royal Family an immense sense of pride.

During his brief visit to Poland the King will also meet President Andrzej Duda.

Speaking ahead of the anniversary Sir Keir said while we remember the six million Jewish victims "we must also act", adding he wanted to make teaching young people about the genocide a "national endeavour".

He said: "It happened, it can happen again: that is the warning of the Holocaust to us all.

"The Holocaust was a collective endeavour by thousands of ordinary people utterly consumed by the hatred of difference.

"That is the hatred we stand against today and it is a collective endeavour for all of us to defeat it."

On Wednesday, Sir Keir welcomed a group of survivors and their families to Downing Street, describing the meeting as "an incredible privilege" and praised their "sheer and remarkable courage".

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch spoke of the importance of confronting "the resurgence of antisemitism today" while reflecting on the Holocaust as a "unique evil in human history", in a statement to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

While Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey urged vigilance in defending "peace, human rights and compassion" and guarding against "antisemitism, hatred, discrimination and oppression".

UK sailor missing after yacht found 'eviscerated'

JANUARY 27, 2025

A British sailor is lost at sea after his yacht was found "eviscerated" off the south-western French coast in stormy weather, maritime officials have said.

The 73-year-old set off his distress beacon on Saturday after getting into difficulty approximately 80km (50 miles) west of Lacanau, the Préfecture maritime de l'Atlantique said in a statement.

A French air force helicopter was dispatched to find the man, but found his 12-metre yacht, the Tiger PA, "eviscerated" in the Bay of Biscay.

Two divers were then winched down to the wreckage, where they discovered an empty raft, officials added.

A Portuguese cargo ship and a Spanish hospital vessel were both diverted to the area and to help with the search, alongside the French navy.

After several hours of searching, it was called off in the early hours of Sunday morning "due to a lack of information".

In the statement the the Préfecture maritime de l'Atlantique reminded people to be careful in the waters during the stormy weather.

It comes after Storm Herminia, named by the Spanish weather service Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) on Friday, brought heavy rains and wind battered the north of Spain and western France.

Gusts of wind exceeded 62mph and floodwaters caused by the storm also left cars and buildings submerged in western France.

Warm words, for now, between Trump and Starmer

JANUARY 27, 2025

When it comes to personality and to politics, the differences between the prime minister and President Donald Trump are wider than the Atlantic Ocean.

But, whisper it: outwardly, in public and for now at least, the language and diplomacy used by the two of them about each other appears to be broadly conventional.

Sir Keir Starmer and Trump spent 45 minutes on the phone over the weekend, hours after the President had told the BBC the prime minister had done "a very good job so far".

Trump acknowledged "he's a liberal, which is a bit different from me," adding "I may not agree with his philosophy, but I have a very good relationship with him".

And if diplomacy is the art of finding shared interests and instincts, particularly if one or the other or both might be in short supply, the way Downing Street and the White House described this first conversation since the inauguration is a case study in just that: diplomacy.

Sources in London describe the call as "very warm" and "very personal". It appears the big picture, and getting to know each other, was the aim, rather than policy detail.

It is, of course, on the policy detail that disagreements loiter.

But for now at least there appears to be an effort on both sides to establish a rapport and for each to size the other up – all ahead of a trip to Washington the prime minister is expected to make in the next handful of weeks.

It is convention when two international leaders speak for each side to issue what is known as a "read out" afterwards – how each side interpreted how the call went and what was discussed.

These read outs tend to broadly overlap, otherwise it would appear each side was talking about a different call, but differences of emphasis and language are worth looking for.

As you would expect, they discussed the ceasefire in the Middle East and the release of the British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari.

Also, as you would expect, both sides mentioned the president's love of the Royal Family, a vital and unique diplomatic lever the prime minister has at his disposal in the coming years of managing his relationship with the White House.

There was mention too of the president's condolences to the prime minister over the recent death of his younger brother, Nick.

But two other sentences, one from each read out, struck me most.

First, a sentence from Downing Street.

A Downing Street spokesman said the two men "discussed trade and the economy, with the prime minister setting out how we are deregulating to boost growth".

A counterintuitive thing for a left wing leader to say - talk of deregulation - but a magic word to use in the company of President Trump.

And it is a consistent thing for the prime minister to be saying: both he and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have been emphasising it in various guises over the last few days as they have really leant into their desire for economic growth.

We will hear more about it this week, including in a key speech from Reeves on Wednesday and various other announcements before and after that speech.

Second, a sentence from the White House.

A spokesman there said "the two leaders also discussed…how both countries can promote a fair bilateral economic relationship".

No explicit mention of tariffs, or import taxes, but we know they are threatened by President Trump on America's friends as well as foes.

But that sentence, with that reference to "fair" appears to be doing a lot of work to smile through what could be some bumpy conversations ahead.

Bumpy, though, is for another day, appears to be the vibe. For now at least.

UK hit with high winds as Storm Herminia rolls in

JANUARY 27, 2025

Yellow warnings for wind and heavy rain have been issued for parts of the UK as a new storm arrives in the wake of Éowyn.

The Met Office says Storm Herminia, which first hit parts of Spain and France, brings with it the possibility of injuries and "danger to life". Storm Éowyn left two people dead after hitting the UK last week.

While the majority of Monday's weather warnings cover most of England, heavy rain is also forecast for Northern Ireland, Wales and southern Scotland.

High winds from the new storm have brought power cuts to thousands across the south-west of England, where there have also been reports of flooding.

A yellow wind warning runs until 07:00 GMT on Monday and covers large swathes of southern England, the North West, the West Midlands and Yorkshire.

Gusts of 55-65mph (89-105km/h) are possible overnight and there is a small chance they could reach 80mph, the Met Office said.

This could cause damage to buildings, such as tiles coming off roofs, and cause disruption to transport.

National Rail is advising commuters to check before they travel - specifically for those using ScotRail, Transport for Wales, CrossCountry, LNER, Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express services.

Another yellow warning for strong and gusty winds is in place from 06:00 on Monday until the same time on Tuesday in Wales and southern parts of England.

A yellow warning for periods of heavy rain that could cause some flooding of roads and properties had been issued for the West Midlands and most of Wales until 23:59 on Monday.

The Met Office expects 20mm to 40mm to fall quite widely and 50mm to 70mm on higher ground.

Gusts are expected to reach 70mph or more around exposed coasts, while areas inland can expect wind gusts of up to 50mph, forecasters warn.

On Sunday morning, 83mph gusts of wind were recorded in Berry Head, Devon, and 81mph was recorded in Capelcurig, North Wales.

Elsewhere on Sunday, seven American students had to be rescued off the coast of western Wales by the RNLI volunteers after becoming stranded on a tidal island in stormy conditions.

In Somerset, staff at Sainsbury's supermarket had to sweep water out of a store as major flooding hit parts of the county.

Storm Herminia was named by the Spanish weather service Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) on Friday. Heavy rains and wind battered the north of the country, with gusts exceeding 62mph being recorded.

Floodwaters caused by the storm also left cars and buildings submerged in western France.

A British sailor is also missing off the French coast after his yacht was found "eviscerated", French authorities said.

Herminia is not powerful enough over the UK to be named a storm by the Met Office - unlike the far more powerful Éowyn, which left a trail of destruction and disruption after causing several rare red weather warnings.

The Met Office said Éowyn was "probably the strongest storm" to hit the UK in at least 10 years.

Two people were killed on Friday after trees fell on their cars. A 19-year-old died in East Ayrshire, Scotland, while a 20-year-old man was killed in County Donegal, Ireland.

Thousands of properties across the UK were still without power on Sunday after Éowyn caused widespread damage to electricity infrastructure in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

At the storm's height, nearly a million properties were without power across the British Isles, while many road and railways were blocked.

Belarusian peacekeepers ‘best option’ for Ukraine – Lukashenko

27 Jan, 2025

The Belarusian military is best suited for potential peacekeeping duties in Ukraine, President Alexander Lukashenko told journalists on Sunday. Other nations could attempt to use the mandate to their own advantage, he has said at a press conference in Minsk.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky stated earlier that at least 200,000 “European peacekeepers” would be needed to uphold a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

Lukashenko argued that Belarusians would be the best fit. “If [it comes to that] in the name of trust and fairness, they don’t have anyone except the Belarusian army,” the president said.

“It doesn’t mean that I would deploy my army – 70,000 men – as peacekeepers,” Lukashenko said. “But there are no other [options]. All the rest will tilt the [the situation] towards the West or the East. That is why they can only agree to Belarusian peacekeepers.”

Only Belarusians are capable of “securing normal relations” between Russia and Ukraine, Lukashenko claimed. He stressed, however, that he has no immediate plans of donating troops for a peacekeeping mission.

Lukashenko acknowledged that there would be “serious debates” about the composition of the force, and it would be unlikely that Ukraine and its Western backers would agree to the participation of Belarus.

According to media reports, France and the UK are considering sending peacekeepers if a ceasefire is reached. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said earlier this month that he had “no doubt” his country would donate troops.

In December, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a peacekeeping mission could be discussed if negotiations are resumed. Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service has warned that the West could use peacekeepers to “occupy” Ukraine and buy time for a new conflict with Russia.

Lukashenko was reelected for his seventh term in office on Sunday, receiving more than 80% of the vote, according to the Electoral Commission.

Zelensky explains ban on talks with Moscow

26 Jan, 2025

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has explained that he banned negotiations with Russia in order to prevent what he called “separatist” talks outside official government oversight. Russia tried to reach out to Kiev through various intermediaries, including Ukrainian lawmakers, European parliamentarians, US contacts, and even ordinary people, he claimed in comments to journalists on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Zelensky complained that Moscow started “setting up a large number of various channels” it could use for talks after the start of its military campaign against Kiev in February 2022.

“There were a lot of negotiation processes, many shadowy political corridors,” he added.

“There were many various negotiation venues. I just realized that we and our relevant authorities cannot control it,” he told journalists, adding that he “quickly stopped” it, calling any talks with Moscow outside of his government’s control “separatism.” He also admitted that Russia did have “a large number” of negotiation channels in Ukraine prior to the ban.

Zelensky signed a decree banning any talks with Russia on October 4, 2022. The document only stated that any negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin were “impossible.” It did not specify whether Zelensky or anyone else could still speak with the Russian leadership.

Russia has consistently stated its readiness for peace talks and has accused Kiev of avoiding seeking a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Earlier this week, Putin told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin that any negotiations between Moscow and Kiev would be “illegitimate” as long as the ban stays in place. Any results of such talks could easily be made null and void, the Russian president warned, adding that, although some preliminary contacts could be made right now, any “serious” steps are not possible until the situation changes.

Putin also called on Kiev’s Western backers to exert pressure on Ukraine and make it lift the prohibition on talks. The Russian president said he believed Kiev was in no rush to lift the ban since it was satisfied with the current situation that allowed it to receive “hundreds of billions [of dollars] from its sponsors” that it can “chomp down on.”
