December 17, 2023
UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has urged a UN panel to find
out how the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is acquiring modern
weaponry to carry out terrorist attacks in the country.
Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative Usman
Jadoon highlighted the alarming trend during a UN Security Council open debate
on the threat posed by the diversion, illicit trafficking, and misuse of small
arms and light weapons.
He argued that terrorist groups like TTP acquire such
weapons “from illicit arms markets or receive them from entities that want to
destabilise a particular region or country.”
Ambassador Jadoon said Pakistan will continue to work
closely with the international community towards exposing those who were
responsible for supporting, financing and externally sponsoring such operations
He pointed out that “terrorists and criminals do not
manufacture these advanced arms; instead, they acquire them from illicit
markets or entities with intentions to destabilise specific regions or
countries.”
And it’s the “responsibility of all the states and the
UN to take measures to prevent illicit trade, transfer and diversion of these
arms,” he added.
Promising continued collaboration with the
international community, the Pakistani envoy said that Pakistan’s strong stance
on this issue “underscores the country’s commitment to global peace and
security.”
In a separate but equally significant development,
Pakistan has urged the establishment of a special tribunal and accountability
mechanism to investigate Israel’s alleged war crimes against Palestinians.
Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made this
demand at an Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly on the
Situation in Palestine.
These diplomatic initiatives highlight Pakistan’s
proactive engagement on the global stage, addressing critical issues and
advocating for justice, accountability, and lasting peace in regions marred by
conflict.

All India Muslim Jamaat President Razvi Barelvi Want
PM Modi to Lay Foundation Stone of the Ayodhya Masjid
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
-----
December 16, 2023
President of All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana
Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi on December 16 said that Muslims in India have lost
faith in the Sunni Central Waqf Board as it has failed to take steps to
construct a mosque on the five acres of land given by the Supreme Court in
Dhannipur, Ayodhya in lieu of Babri Masjid.
He also suggested that the Board invite Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, instead of Macca Sharif Imam, to lay the foundation stone for
the proposed mosque.
“In compliance with the Supreme Court’s order to
allocate five acres of land elsewhere in Ayodhya for the construction of a
mosque in lieu of the Ram Temple, the land has been allocated in Dhannipur.
However, construction has not begun on this site yet, while the Ram Mandir is
complete and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attending the consecration ceremony.
Despite having permission, the Sunni Waqf Board failed to put even a brick at
the mosque site,” he said.
“We came to know that the Imam of the Macca Sharif
will lay the foundation stone of the mosque. Muslims have lost faith in the
Sunni Central Waqf Board. It is not a trusted institution. Would it not be
better that instead of inviting the Imam of Macca Sharif, the foundation stone
for the mosque was laid in Ayodhya by Prime Minister Modi during his presence
on January 22,” Mr. Barelvi added.
All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ) is a religious
organisation belonging to the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam, based in
Bareilly. It recently supported the Central government’s ban on the Popular
Front of India (PFI) and appealed to Sunni Barelvi supporters to maintain
distance from such extremist groups.

China Calls for Alteration of UN Sanctions against
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

-----
2023-12-16
KABUL (BNA): China has requested the United Nations
Security Council to adjust sanctions against Afghanistan considering the
current conditions in the country.
Xinhua, the official news agency of China, has
reported, that Gang Shuang, the deputy representative of China to the United
Nations, stated that Afghanistan is in a critical stage of reconstruction and
revitalization.
The international community must strengthen
constructive engagement with the authorities of this country to emerge from the
humanitarian crisis and boost the economy and livelihoods of the people.
He also emphasized “improving human rights in
Afghanistan and the country’s return to the family of nations.” He added:
Terrorist threats in Afghanistan remain serious. The international community
must assist Afghanistan in combating all terrorist forces.
GengShuang stated, that the Security Council must
ensure that the regime of sanctions has an impact on improving peace and
stability in Afghanistan, and at the same time, adjustments should be made to
these sanctions given the current conditions.
He said China believes that the Security Council
should facilitate genuine interaction between the international community and
Afghanistan by timely adjustments to sanctions, preventing the negative effects
of these sanctions on the livelihood of the Afghan people and the development
of the country.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the
United Nations added, in the first step, that the Security Council should
consider lifting sanctions exemptions on the travel of certain officials of the
Islamic Emirate as soon as possible.
China has always considered such exemptions as a
necessary tool to facilitate dialogue and interaction, believing that this
issue should not be used as a means of coercion or pressure.
This comes as the United Nations Security Council has
extended the mandate of the committee overseeing sanctions against the Islamic
Emirate for another year, a decision that may seem unjustifiable.

York Exhibition Displays Islamic Art Spanning One
Thousand Years

16 December 2023
An exhibition of Islamic art spanning one thousand
years has gone on display in York.
The exhibition of ceramics, paintings, artefacts and
photographs is on display at the University of York’s Borthwick Centre for
Archives.
The artefacts in the exhibition date from the 9th to
the 19th centuries and come from lands ruled by Muslim dynasties from Spain in
the west to India in the east.
Highlights include ancient coins with ornate
calligraphy and vibrantly coloured fragments of ceramics painted with figures
and geometric patterns.
Curators of the exhibition Dr Richard McClary from the
Department of History of Art and Helena Cox have divided the exhibition into
three main theme.
“The collection allows students, and now the wider
public, to see the true scale, colour and intricacies of these unique artefacts
for themselves,” Dr McClary said.
“My love of Islamic art and architecture started when
I visited Istanbul with my dad as a teenager. I had never seen anything like
the huge, open, light-filled space in the great Ottoman mosques. I hope this
exhibition can give visitors a sense of the wonders of art in the Islamic
world.”

Siraj terms polls without delay panacea for terror,
economic ills
Waseem Ashraf Butt
December 17, 2023
GUJRAT: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Sirajul Haq says holding
elections is the solution to the terrorism and elections should not be delayed
through lame excuse of some acts of terrorism in the country and Friday’s
verdict by the Supreme Court has eliminated uncertainty looming over the
general election.
He was talking to Dawn at a breakfast hosted by Gujrat
JI emir Ansar Mehmood Dhool where North Punjab JI emir Dr Tariq Saleem, Kharian
emir Imran Anwar and others were also present.
Mr Haq said some foreign agencies and world powers
needed a disturbed Pakistan and in case of further delay in the polls, the
situation might get further disturbed through creation of more conflicts on
linguistic, sectarian, regional and political basis. He stressed that the
security institutions could not alone handle the menace of terrorism as they
needed a strong and democratically elected government to fight against the
terrorism in a more effective way whereas to tackle the deteriorating economy,
a strong democratic government was a must.

Ex-PM lambasts AJK govt over bill to ‘stifle dissent’
Tariq Naqash
December 17, 2023
MUZAFFARABAD: Former Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)
prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas on Saturday censured the coalition
government for trying to “stifle dissent” through a controversial law and
called for its withdrawal.
“The day when the entire Kashmiri nation was up in
arms over the endorsement of Narendra Modi-led government’s illegitimate and
unilateral action of August 5, 2019, by India’s Supreme Court, the hybrid
regime in Muzaffarabad introduced a highly controversial bill in the
Legislative Assembly to accomplish its agenda of suppressing the dissenting
voices both from the political activists and media,” said Mr Ilyas, in
reference to the AJK Defamation Act, 2021 which was tabled by the government on
Wednesday amid protest by the journalists community.
Talking to a group of journalists, the former AJK PM
said ever since the present government took over, “not a single day had gone by
when people had not suffered one or the other adversity at its hands”.
“Ask anyone in the liberated territory about their
performance, and you will hear a torrent of complaints… And since they
[government] themselves know the public sentiment and are anticipating an
acceleration of anger at their deficiencies and infirmities, they have resorted
to the promulgation of a black law to curb opposition and objection.”

Congress Eyes Muslim Outreach Through Party’s U.P.
Jodo Yatra
December 16, 2023
Mayank Kumar
The Congress party in Uttar Pradesh is launching a
‘U.P. Jodo Yatra’ from December 20, on the same lines as its earlier Bharat
Jodo Yatra, in a bid to regain its lost ground and reach out to districts in
the western part of the State which have sizeable Muslim electorates.
The Yatra will starting from Saharanpur on Wednesday,
and end in Lucknow around the second week of January, having covered 11 districts
and 15 parliamentary constituencies. The route is being seen as a major
outreach towards the Muslim community as seven out of the 11 districts —
Moradabad, Bareilly, Bijnor, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Amroha, and Rampur —
have high Muslim populations. In fact, Muslims make up more than 35% of the
population in each of these districts, which together account for ten
parliamentary seats.

Expose Shia, Jama'at agenda exploiting Palestinian
crisis for political gain: Kerala Salafi group
17th December 2023
By Express News Service
KOZHIKODE: Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama, (KJU), the body
of Salafi scholars in Kerala, has asserted that the organisation will continue
to ‘expose the attempts from some corners to draw political mileage from the
ongoing Palestine crisis.’
In a statement issued on Saturday, KJU president M
Muhammad Madani and secretary Haneef Kayakkodi said the Shias and the Ikhwanis
in Kerala are trying to use the Palestine issue to ‘draw support for their
organisation.’ (Ikhwani is the term used to denote organisations such as
Jama’at-e-Islami because they share some of the ideology of the Ikwan
Al-Muslimeen or Muslim Brotherhood.)
“The Salafi movement all over the world and the
Mujahid movement have stood for Palestine and Al Quds right from the days of
the start of the Palestine issue. At the same time, the Mujahid movement has
tried to expose the Shia-Ikwani conspiracy to use Palestine for political
mileage,” the statement said.

Iran-aligned Houthis warn Israel, US against attacking
Yemen
16 Dec 2023
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have warned Israel, the United
States and other Western allies that any hostile move from foreign forces
against the country will have dire consequences and come at great cost.
The Iran-aligned Houthis, who control much of Yemen
but are not recognised internationally, have escalated maritime tensions by
launching near-daily attacks on vital waterways to pressure Israel in its war
against Palestinian armed group Hamas.
Ali al-Qahoum, a member of the Houthi’s Ansarullah
politburo, said Yemen was ready with all defensive options to respond to any
military moves by the US, Israel or other Western powers.
“The Houthis will not abandon the Palestinian cause,
regardless of any US, Israeli or Western threats,” al-Qahoum said in an
interview with Lebanon-based Al Mayadeen TV late on Friday, adding that
operations against Israel will continue.

US, UK forces down 15 drones over Red Sea as Houthis
vow to keep up attacks on Israel
16 December 2023
A senior Houthi official has vowed that the Yemeni
rebels will continue operations against Israel, as repeated attacks by the
Iran-backed group have disrupted international shipping through a key Red Sea
waterway.
“The Houthis will not abandon the Palestinian cause,
regardless of any US, Israeli, or Western threats,” Houthi politburo member Ali
al-Qahoum told Al-Mayadeen, according to Reuters, while warning any hostile
move against Yemen would have dire consequences.
He also claimed: “Yemen is concerned in protecting
international maritime navigation in accordance with international laws and
norms.”
US Navy forces said they shot down 14 drones over the
Red Sea Saturday morning. Egypt’s state-run media also reported that Egyptian
air defense had shot down a “flying object” off the Egyptian resort town of
Dahab.
A British destroyer brought down a suspected attack
drone in the Red Sea, UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps said. The overnight
action was the first time the Royal Navy has shot down an aerial target in conflict
since the 1991 Gulf War.

US military leaders press Israel to shift from major
combat as Iranian-backed ship attacks escalate
December 17, 2023
WASHINGTON: The top two US military leaders are
traveling to Tel Aviv to advise the Israeli government on how to transition
from major combat operations against Hamas in Gaza to a more limited campaign
and prevent a wider regional war. Their trip comes as Iranian-backed militants
on Saturday launched a wave of attack drones against ships in the Red Sea and
said they would continue until Israel’s “aggression” ends.
One of the American warships assigned to the Ford
carrier strike group, the destroyer USS Carney, “successfully engaged” 14
one-way attack drones launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, US
Central Command said in a statement. Britain reported that a Royal Navy
destroyer downed another drone that was targeting commercial ships.
It was the latest in a series of attacks threatening
commercial and US Navy ships in the Red Sea that have escalated after Israel
intensified its response to the Hamas’ strike against Israel on Oct. 7. Israel
is stinging from the deadliest attack ever on its homefront and has pledged
that its offensive will not cease until Hamas is destroyed.
US defense leaders are hoping to prevent the risk of
wider regional conflict, both through a sustained high level of US military
presence and by engaging with the Israelis to get them to move beyond the
massive bombardment campaign.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs
Chairman Gen. CQ Brown, who are heading to Israel, served in leadership roles
as US airpower and ground forces moved from major combat to lower-intensity counterterrorism
operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. But it is not clear how deeply their advice
from lessons learned will resonate with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s
government.

India would hate to see Bangladesh Nationalist
Party-Jamaat wrest power: Shahriar Kabir
SubhoranjanDasgupta
17.12.23
The parliamentary elections are due early next year
and Bangladesh is roiling. The chief actors are the ruling Awami League, the
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Jamaat-e-Islami and Uncle Sam. In the
news — protests and rallies against the incumbent Sheikh Hasina-led government
eyeing a fourth consecutive term in office, arrests of Opposition leaders and
supporters, and the ensuing violence. In September, an over-anxious US State
Department announced the imposition of visa restrictions on “Bangladeshi
individuals responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic
election process in Bangladesh” and in November, the sudden departure of US Ambassador
to Bangladesh Peter Haas for a “short vacation” caused a flutter. Against this
political backdrop, SubhoranjanDasgupta chats with Bangladeshi human rights
activist Shahriar Kabir. Here are the excerpts.
Q The BNP is sustaining its agitation, turning violent
at times. To what extent have the people of Bangladesh responded to their
programme?
The agitation launched by the BNP in the first phase
was more or less peaceful. The people also responded to a certain extent...
But since October 28, the BNP-Jamaat’s anti-government
movement turned violent — a constable was butchered, journalists were severely
assaulted, the residence of the Chief Justice was attacked, many buses and
other vehicles were set on fire and a couple of helpers of buses were burnt to
death. Above all, the blockade of rail and road and the days of hartal
adversely impacted business, daily wage earners and peasants in particular who
supply vegetables to towns and cities. I fear rallies, blockades and hartals
will conti- nue till the elections. The people, however, are tired, even
disgusted, by this continuing unrest and they are not simply responding. In

Pawn in a bigger game: Why Washington is interested in
Bangladesh
Arindam Mukherjee
December 17, 2023
Imagine the India that was, about twenty years ago. A
huge market, driven chiefly by domestic consumption – a foreign investors’
delight. It had a young, upwardly mobile urban population that was moderately
educated and with a minimal sense of identity. They sought full Westernisation,
were driven by individualistic consumptive patterns and aspirations, and were
poised to set the trend among the rest of the country.
The intelligent ones remained busy looking out for and
migrating to greener pastures for career growth – mostly in Western nations
like the USA, the UK, France, Germany or Australia.
There used to be a weak political and bureaucratic
class that was chiefly driven by opportunism, bribery, and blackmail. India,
just a few decades ago used to be a soft-state with terribly weak internal
security, and a cosmetic international presence that survived on Western
validation; it was a country fairly dependent on the USA – a copybook vassal.
Do not, not even for a moment, think that this was
natural. This needed a lot of hard work by the West. We now realise as we
uncover the money trails, the NGOs and business houses, the brokers and
industrialists, the subversive networks, the paid-media, or the subnational
elements within academia, politics, and bureaucratic apparatus.

the nation’s liberation, Andalib Elias, the Deputy High Commissioner, weaved a
message of shared victory and blossoming personal ties between Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as per a report
covered by news agency ANI.
“PM Narendra Modi and my Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
enjoy a wonderful personal relationship built on mutual trust and respect. So
it’s very important when two heads of government from two neighbouring
countries respect each other. They have very good contact with each other. They

relationship,” Elias told news agency ANI.
He further extended warm greetings on the occasion of
Vijay Diwas, commemorating the victory day of Bangladesh 52 years ago. Elias
expressed profound thanks to the Indian government, people, and the Armed
Forces for their significant role during the war, highlighting the sacrifices
made by the Indian Armed Forces personnel.
“First of all, many greetings to everyone on behalf of
this occasion of the Vijay Diwas. The victory day of Bangladesh. It’s one of
the greatest occasions for us, 52 years ago. On this day, the final victory of
Bangladesh was achieved,” he said.

Tenpin Exeter: Striking pictures of city's bowling
mecca down the years
By Paul Greaves
16 DEC 2023
A huge new Exeter housing development at Haven Banks
in Exeter has been given the go ahead - which means the empty Range store near
the quayside will come down, along with Tenpin Exeter and other buildings to
create space for more than 400 homes in four blocks, each five or six storeys
high.
The bowling brand has reiterated that they are
committed to remaining in Exeter. They say they are now in talks with the
landlord of Haven Banks to identify an alternative site for the bowling alley.
Until they have secured a new location, Tenpin will remain in situ.
The developer claims the proposals will ‘reinvigorate’
the retail park and deliver new homes. It will also ‘kick-start’ the council’s
Liveable Exeter housing project.

Large fire burns second residential construction site
in three days in Denver suburb
Dec 17, 2023
DENVER: Firefighters in the Denver metro area
responded to the second large fire at an Aurora construction site in three days
on Saturday. Officials have not yet determined the cause for either fire and
have not suggested that they were related, but both are under investigation.
Saturday's five-alarm fire was reported about 12:48
p.m., said Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Andrew Logan, at a large apartment
building that was still under construction. Responding crews went to the top
floor of the five-story building where the blaze was reported to have started,
but the dangerous conditions soon forced crews from several different agencies
to focus on fighting the flames from outside the structure.
No other buildings were damaged in the fire, Logan
said, and firefighters were expected to remain on the scene through Saturday
evening.

South African ex-President Jacob Zuma has denounced
the ANC and pledged to vote for a new party
BY MOGOMOTSI MAGOME
December 16, 2023
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Former President Jacob Zuma on
Saturday denounced the governing African National Congress party and announced
that he would vote for a newly-formed political formation in South Africa’s
general election next year.
Zuma, who was president of the ANC from 2007 to 2017,
said that he’s backing the newly-formed Umkhonto we Sizwe party that is named
after the ANC’s now-defunct military wing, which was disbanded after the
liberation struggle.
Zuma, 81, called on other South Africans to vote for
the new formation, saying it would be “a betrayal to vote for the ANC” of
President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The country’s general election scheduled for 2024 is
expected to be highly contested, because the ruling ANC, which has governed the
country since Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically-elected
leader in 1994, faces a myriad of challenges.
