------------
ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan's former president Pervez Musharraf, 79, has died after a prolonged
illness at a hospital in Dubai after spending years in self-imposed exile,
Pakistani local media reported on Sunday (Feb 5).
Musharraf,
the four-star general who ruled Pakistan for nearly a decade after seizing
power in a bloodless coup in 1999, oversaw rapid economic growth and attempted
to usher in socially liberal values in the conservative Muslim country.
He
enjoyed strong support for many years, though his greatest threat was al Qaeda
and other militant groups who tried to kill him at least three times.
But
his heavy-handed use of the military to quell dissent as well as his continued
backing of the United States in its fight against al Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban
ultimately led to his downfall.
Born
in New Delhi in 1943, Musharraf was four years old when his parents joined the
mass exodus by Muslims to the newly created state of Pakistan. His father
served in the foreign ministry, while his mother was a teacher and the family
subscribed to a moderate, tolerant brand of Islam.
He
joined the army at the age of 18 and went on to lead an elite commando unit
before rising to become its chief. He took power by ousting the then-prime
minister, Nawaz Sharif, who had tried to sack him for greenlighting an
operation to invade Indian-held areas of Kashmir, bringing Pakistan and India
to the brink of war.
In
his early years in government, Musharraf won plaudits internationally for his
reformist efforts, pushing through legislation to protect the rights of women
and allowing private news channels to operate for the first time.
His
penchant for cigars and imported whisky and his calls for Muslims to adopt a
lifestyle of "enlightened moderation" increased his appeal in the
West in the aftermath of the Sep 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.
He
became one of Washington’s most important allies after the attacks, allowing US
forces to operate armed drones from secret bases on Pakistani soil that killed
thousands and ordering domestic troops into the country’s lawless tribal areas
along the Afghanistan frontier for the first time in Pakistan’s history.
That
helped legitimise his rule overseas but also helped plunge Pakistan into a
bloody war against local extremist militant groups.
In
a 2006 memoir, he took credit for saving Pakistan from American wrath saying
the country had been warned it needed to be “prepared to be bombed back to the
Stone Age” if it did not ally itself with Washington.
Musharraf
also successfully lobbied then-President George W. Bush to pour money into the
Pakistani military. Still, the army's allegiances were never unambiguous: Its
powerful intelligence services cut deals with the Taliban and al Qaeda, and
bolstered an insurgency fighting US troops in Afghanistan.
At
a regional summit in 2002, less than three years after launching the military
operation against India, Musharraf shocked the world when, after finishing a
speech, he suddenly moved towards Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to
shake hands and offered to talk peace.
Analysts
say the issue of Kashmir – which remains the most potent point of contention
between India and Pakistan – was close to being solved during the Musharraf
era. But the peace process was derailed soon after his rule.
Under
Musharraf, foreign investment flourished and Pakistan saw annual economic
growth of as much as 7.5 per cent - which remains the highest level in nearly
three decades, according to World Bank data.
In
2006, Musharraf ordered military action that killed a tribal head from the
province Balochistan, laying the foundations of an armed insurgency that rages
to this day.
The
next year, more than a hundred students calling for the imposition of Sharia
law were killed after Musharraf shunned negotiations and ordered troops to
storm a mosque in Islamabad. That led to the birth of a new militant group,
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, which has since killed tens of thousands in suicide
bombings and brazen assaults.
Later
in 2007, a suicide attack that assassinated opposition leader Benazir Bhutto
triggered waves of violence. His efforts to strong-arm the judiciary also led
to protests and a besieged Musharraf postponed elections and declared a state
of emergency.
In
2008, the country's first democratic elections in 11 years were held.
Musharraf's party lost and facing impeachment by parliament he resigned from
the presidency and fled to London.
He
returned to Pakistan in 2013 to run for a seat in parliament but was
immediately disqualified. He was allowed to leave for Dubai in 2016.
In
2019, a court sentenced him to death in absentia for the 2007 imposition of
emergency rule but the verdict was later overturned.

Are 'Love Jihad' and Hate Speech Going to Be Part of BJP's BMC Polls Agenda?

After
over 30 rallies across Maharashtra, the Sakal Hindu Samaj, an umbrella body of
Hindu organisations, held a Hindu Jan AakroshMorch in Mumbai on January 29,
amid calls for laws against religious conversions, the bogey of ‘love jihad’
conspiracies, and an economic boycott of Muslims.
Various
hate speeches were given at this rally. The event was attended by several top
Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, ministers of the Maharashtra government and BJP
MLAs.
Is
this an attempt to communalise the politics of Maharashtra for the purpose of
the upcoming BMC polls? BJP’s top brass, including Amit Shah, have repeatedly
made it clear that the BMC is important for them.

Did
Qatar bribe Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to not fight the Taliban?
February
5, 2023
The
Taliban interim government in Afghanistan (Pic. Courtesy
Twitter/@suhailshaheen1)
---------
In
a major revelation, Italy’s State-run TV network Tg1 has reported that Qatar
allegedly paid the then Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani, $110 million to not
fight the Taliban militants.
The
State-run network also says that Qatar paid $51 million to Marshal Abdul Rashid
Dostum– commander and warlord, and $61 million to Atta Mohammad Noor–former
governor of Balkh province for not resisting the Taliban. The money was
allegedly paid in Kabul by a Qatari representative.
To
buttress its investigation, Tg1 published various documents on Thursday to
prove that the money was allegedly received by the three Afghan leaders one
month before Ghani’s government fell without offering resistance to the Taliban
forces.
Afghanistan’s
Khaama Press reports that the investigation says representatives of Ghani,
Dostum and Noor received the money from a representative of Qatar after signing
the documents on 7 July 2021.
One
of the documents says that Ajmal Ahmady, the then Central Bank Governor,
received $110 million on behalf of
former president Ghani.
Another
document allegedly shows that Mohammad FarhadAzimi, the then governor of Balkh
province, received $61 million on behalf of Noor from Qatar’s representative in
Kabul.
The
third document says that the former first deputy of the Supreme National
Reconciliation Council received $51 million from the Qatar representative on
behalf of Marshal Dostum. This document allegedly praised Dostum’s cooperation
in retreating from the northern provinces such as Fariyab and Jawzjan
provinces.
Khaama
Press says that the archive of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows that
Qatari ambassador, Dr Mutlaq Al-Qahtani was in Kabul and had met with the then
president Ashraf Ghani at the presidential palace on 7 July 2021.
The
letters highlight that while money was given to the three Afghan leaders to
avoid resisting the Taliban fighters, for Dostum and Noor the money was
specifically meant to not fight against the Taliban in Northern Afghanistan.
Noor
too rejected the authenticity of the documents and claimed that the media
fabricated these documents in support of terror groups.
Italian
journalist Filippo Rossi conducted this investigation for the State-run TV
network Tg1. He claimed that the Afghan national forces were directed from
Kabul to retreat and not resist the Taliban.
Going
back to the action-packed days of July-August 2021, the world had observed with
shock and surprise how the US-trained Afghan National Defense Force had fallen
like a pack of cards to the Taliban militants. Even capital Kabul fell into
Taliban hands in a day with no opposition or resistance from the Afghan army.

Saudi

Cairo:
Saudi Arabia plans to create cemeteries for non-Muslims to facilitate a swift
burial process, a local newspaper has reported.
The
kingdom’s Ministry of Municipal, Village Affairs and Housing has directed
several affiliated municipalities to create places for non-Muslims to
facilitate the swift burial of the non-Muslim deceased instead of transferring
them to specific areas like the ones existing in the Red Sea city of Jeddah,
Okaz said.
The
ministry has set specifications for these tombs different from the ones
allocated for Muslims, the paper added, citing what it described as
well-informed sources.
Meanwhile,
officials at the municipality of Taif in western Saudi Arabia had met with
specialists at the Ministry of Health and discussed issues related to the
burial process and ways to make it comfortable for relatives of the deceased,
the report said.
To
this end, efforts include preparing tombs, and giving family of the dead person
a possible access to an immediate, electronic death certificate instead of the
certificates issued by the Ministry of Health hospitals.
Saudi
Arabia, a country of around 34.8 million people, is home to a large community
of migrant workers including followers of non-Islamic faiths.
In
a sign of tolerance, Saudi Arabia has recently allowed public display of
decorations and other festive features linked to Christmas, which was once
celebrated behind closed doors in the kingdom.

General
IS Ali: Sustaining the Heat on Boko Haram
by
Lawrence Audu
February
5, 2023
American
statesman, General Colin Powell was right in one of his writings on leadership
when he said: ” Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut
through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand.”
This is also true of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor under
whose dynamic leadership we see a strong synergy of among service chiefs
working round the clock to surmount the security challenges the nation faces.
Top Commanders in the Armed Forces with impeccable track records have also at
different periods have been deployed to head critical missions with attendant
successes.
As
the nation continues to battle threats posed by non-state actors and criminal
elements, the military recently redeployed some senior field commanders across
all theatres in a bid to consolidate on the successes achieved. One of them is
Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali who takes over from Major General Chris Musa
at the North East Joint Operations Theatre, Operation Hadin Kai as Theatre
Commander, in Maiduguri, Borno State.
By
now, the name Major General Ibrahim Ali would not come strange to many
following his exploits and experience in the Army and only recently as General
Officer Commanding the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army while at the same time,
Commander of the Joint Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven which Areas of
Responsibility span across Plateau, Bauchi and Kaduna states. That jurisdiction
has been the epicenter of one of the worst ethno-religious conflicts for more
than 20 years. Since September 7, 2001, when Jos lost its innocence following
the outbreak of violence in the one serene city, leaving thousands dead in its
wake, successive administrations over the years have pondered on the possible ways
of finding not just a lasting solution, but to ending the cycle of violence.
This continued until the Armed Forces of Nigeria considered the establishment
of Operation Safe Haven, a military task force set up to maintain peace in
Plateau State in 2010.
General
Ali, whose sojourn in Jos has been very impactful in changing the situation for
the better, deployed a non-kinetic/civil-military approach where necessary. We
now see a people more committed to peace than ever before with several sessions
of dialogues carried out in most of the affected communities to build
confidence, Civil Societies were from time to time called upon to engage
communities, while routine cultural festivals brought all peoples of diverse
faith, creed and ethnicity brought together to interact. In a bid to keep the
youth away from crime and violence, sports competitions were organized
frequently which served also as a talent recruitment avenue from where many
youths have found themselves living their dreams.
A
successful military onslaught led by troops of Operation Safe Haven in Plateau
and Kaduna States, under the Command of General Ali also led to the recovery of
517 small Arms and light weapons from bandits and criminal elements. All these
in addition to the arrest of countless criminals, rescue of kidnap victims as
well as nipping in the bud potential breakdown of law and order through
intelligence gathering.
Born
on 16 November 1970 in Nasarawa Kano State, Nigeria, General Ali started his
educational pursuit in 1974, at Lebanon Primary School Kano, before proceeding
to Saint Thomas Secondary School in 1980 also in Kano State. He began his
military career at the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 39th Regular
Course in 1987 and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from the
Nigerian Defence Academy in 1991. He was nominated in 1992, to complete his
cadet training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom.
He was a member of the Standard Military Course 922 at the Royal Military
Academy. At the end of his course, he was awarded the Silver Bugle for being
the best athlete among all the British and foreign cadets during the course.
Ibrahim was commissioned second lieutenant into the Nigerian Army Armoured
Corps in April 1993.
The
senior officer attended several military courses including; Young Officers’
Course Armour, Regimental Intelligence and Security Officers’ Course, Basic
Range Management Course, Anti-Tank Platoon Commanders’ Course amongst others
both home and abroad. Among the 12 graded courses attended by Major General
Ali, he was the best in order of merit in 7 and second best in 2 of the
courses. During his National Defence Course in 2014, he was awarded the
Inspector General of Police prize for writing the best research paper on Internal
Security Operations.
General
Ali also held several positions in the Army which include, Commander, Rapid
Deployment Force under the ECOWAS Monitoring Group Task Force ECOMOG in
Monrovia, Liberia and in Sierra Leone, Platoon Commander, 5 Battalion. The
operational terrain of the Northeast would not be strange to the new Theatre
Commander who has also served in Operation FLUSH OUT 1 Multinational Joint Task
Force in BagaBorno state and Acting Commander Sector 2 Operation LAFIYA DOLE in
Yobe State. From his experiences General Ali is a war-tested General who has
not only seen real-time combat, but excelled in the battle.
As
General Ibrahim Ali takes Command in the Northeast Theater of Operations, there
is no doubt that he would hit the ground running to continue from where his
predecessor, General CG Musa stopped. General Musa who now Commands Infantry
Corps of the Nigerian Army in all fairness will be remembered as one of the
most successful TCs, under whose Command Troops welfare was given adequate priority
with high morale as the troops went about rooting out insurgents from their
hiding. Many terrorists surrendered to troops while many kidnapped victims
including a number of Chibok girls were rescued during his time.
Expectedly,
on assumption of office, the Theatre Commander has begun expanding on the
existing synergies with visits to units and formations within his Area of
Responsibility where he commended the Air Component for the crucial roles being
played in support of the operation and requested for its sustenance in order to
record more successes in the fight against the insurgents while paying special
tribute to Fallen Heroes at the Memorial Wall.
The visits which were also extended to other critical stakeholders
including traditional institutions provided the opportunity to seek royal
blessings and support of the traditional institution in order to win the hearts
and minds of the locals in the ongoing Operations in the Northeast.

Death
toll of Peshawar mosque blast revised down to 84: police
February
4, 2023
Peshawar
police on Saturday revised down the death toll of the January 30 mosque blast
to 84 after taking out names that were repeated in the martyrs list.
On
Monday, a powerful explosion ripped through a mosque in Peshawar’s Red Zone
area where between 300 and 400 people — mostly police officers — had gathered
for prayers. The suicide blast blew away the wall of the prayer hall and an
inner roof.
The
outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan had initially claimed responsibility for
the attack. It later distanced itself from it but sources earlier indicated
that it might have been the handiwork of some local faction of the outlawed
group.

When

significant” as the two leaders “agreed to contest elections” on vacant NA
seats, which are likely to be held next month. The coalition leader said it
will be decided within a few days whether the PDM would field joint candidates
or the parties would prefer to contest the polls individually. The source said
that as per the schedule for by-polls, candidates could submit their nomination
papers from Feb 4 to Feb 6.

FEBRUARY

The
Muslim organizations feel that the dialogue with the RSS should continue and
there should be an early resolution of the issues leading to conflict between

opinion that the dialogue should continue with the RSS as they hold influence
on the government."
Another
Muslim intellectual who once met these leaders said on condition of anonymity
that on the cow slaughter issue the community should come up with a detailed response
as Muslims are not involved in the cases and it has now become a business

Afghanistan
shows China’s deficits

Feb

China
is the most populous country on the planet, with the second-largest economy and
a growing military strength, all of which contribute to the perception that
China is a challenger to the US for global leadership.
After
the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the return to power of the Taliban in
August 2021, many assumed that China would seek to fill the ensuing power
vacuum.
China’s
engagement with Afghanistan has essentially been driven by short-term and
narrow considerations, rather than a well thought through plan.

How
centuries of Middle Eastern influence shaped Indian architecture
SANJAY
KUMAR
February
05, 2023
NEW
DELHI: Middle Eastern influence on Indian architecture is most famously
represented by the iconic Taj Mahal, but the mausoleum is not the only fine
example of the unique style that throughout centuries developed into a blend of
Arab, Persian and indigenous designs.
The
earliest examples of Islamic architecture to survive in the Indian subcontinent
date from the late years of the 12th century, but the cultural influence of
Islamic art had already been present there since the Arabs conquered the Sindh
region — now in Pakistan — in 712.
As
Muslims came to India, new features and architectural techniques were
introduced in building design, including the use of the arch and dome, the
construction of which was further refined by the Hindu craftsmen who long
before had mastered the art of stonework.
The
Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque in the QutbMinar complex in Delhi is the earliest
surviving mosque in India. Its construction began in 1192, under Qutb-ud-din
Aibak, a Turkic general, who later became the first ruler of the Sultanate of Delhi.

The Contract with the State of BiH and the Islamic Community is being blocked
February
4, 2023
For
a long time, the public in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been manipulating the
content of the contract between the Islamic Community and the state, announced
the Public Relations Office of the Islamic Community.
The
statement states that numerous media, politicians and analysts contribute to
this phenomenon, out of their own interests and for various motives,
manipulating and distorting the facts, and presenting the contract of the
Islamic community as exclusivity in relation to the religious communities with
which the contract has already been signed, as is done by the president SNSD
Milorad Dodik.
“For
the sake of truth, we consider it necessary to recall that the Catholic and
Orthodox churches have signed an agreement with the state in which the state
body is obliged to inform the church that an investigation is being conducted
against a church person. In Article 8, paragraph 1, of the Basic Agreement
between the Holy See and Bosnia and Herzegovina states: “In the case of a
judicial investigation of a cleric, religious or religious because of possible
criminal acts provided for by the criminal law, the judicial authorities of
Bosnia and Herzegovina will notify the competent church authorities
beforehand.” The same provision was requested by the Islamic community, which
is challenged by it, but the churches are not challenged”, according to the
statement of the Public Relations Office of the Islamic Community, reported by
the Mina agency.

UK's
shortest-serving PM Liz Truss blames 'economic orthodoxy' for No 10 exit
Neil
Murphy
Feb
05, 2023
Former
UK prime minister Liz Truss on Sunday said she had no "realistic
chance" to fulfil her radical tax-cutting agenda because the “powerful
economic establishment" was behind her Downing Street downfall.
Ms
Truss made the comments in a lengthy newspaper article, which marked her first

Ms
Truss lasted only 49 days in No 10 before she was forced to resign after she
and her chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng attempted to push through a £45 billion
package of unfunded tax cuts, over which the markets panicked and the pound

"I
am not claiming to be blameless in what happened, but fundamentally I was not

Omar, 40, a Democrat who represents Minnesota’s fifth Congressional District in
the U.S. House of Representatives, was removed from the House Foreign Affairs

House witnessed a contentious debate during which Ms. Omar made the case that

ABUSUFIAN:
Hustler Fund should consider Muslims
February
05, 2023
While
the government continues to hype the success of the Hustler Fund, a key constituency
continues to miss out on this initiative meant to uplift the economic standards
of millions of Kenyans.
More
than Sh14 billion shillings has so far been borrowed from the kitty, which
forms a key plank in the fulfilment of President William Ruto’s election pledge
on wealth creation. Beneficiaries are provided state-backed loans of up to
Sh50,000 at an annual interest rate of eight per cent.
With
interest forming a key part of the Hustler Fund, Muslims have generally been
left out in this economic empowerment programme as Islam forbids its adherents

How official bungling, negligence, complacency, collusion made Boko Haram a
terrifying force — Buratai
05-02-2023
A
former Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd),
has fingered official bungling, negligence, complacency and collusion as
reasons Boko Haram terrorist group became a terrifying force in Nigeria’s
North-East.
Buratai
also said connivance with the proponents and leaders of Boko Haram for selfish
reasons was responsible for the failure to tackle the terrorist group.
The
army chief who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2015, barely
two months after the Nigerian leader was first sworn into office, and served
until January 2021, one and a half years into the President’s second term, also
said he is now a democrat and an All Progressives Congress (APC) member, saying
Nigerians, having tried the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for 16 years, should
give APC the benefit of the doubt for another eight years.
According
to him, when the President took power in May 2015, he was resolute to
extinguish Boko Haram terrorism and restore peace in Nigeria but the nightmare
continued.

At

Omar Ali claims group that took Sulu dispute to court not legal heir
5
Feb 2023
KOTA
KINABALU, Feb 5 — An individual claiming to be the heir of the Sulu sultanate
disagrees with the actions of a group of individuals in taking the Sulu dispute
to the Spanish Constitutional Court because they are not the legal heirs.
Datu
Omar Ali DatuBachtiyal opined that the action of the group of individuals in
bringing the dispute and arbitration process to the Spanish Constitutional
Court was incorrect and illegal.
“In
my opinion, it is not valid because we know that (the facts about the heirs)
are mixed up, and if we really study (their status) is doubtful so this
(status) is not true for me,” he told Bernama recently.
He
said the Sulu dispute could be properly negotiated with all parties and the
arbitration process carried out through peaceful discussions without any
contention.

dispute and claims who allegedly played a role in the Lahad Datu incursion,
Datu Omar Ali DatuBachtiyal, who claims to be the rightful heir to the
Sultanate of Sulu revealed.
Datu

Sulu, to join in the fight to claim Sabah from Malaysia, but he (Omar) firmly
refused.
Without
naming who among the group of Sulu dispute claimants were with Esmail, who died
in 2015, in planning the incursion, Datu Omar Ali admitted to being shocked
after they went ahead with the plan several years later.
“We
knew later from news reports (of the incursion). I myself had been asked to be
