New Delhi: India on Thursday hit out at the
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for inviting the chairman of the All
Parties Hurriyat Conference to attend its foreign ministerial meeting in
Islamabad next week.
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi
said New Delhi does not expect the OIC to encourage actors and organisations
engaged in terrorism and anti-India activities.
At a media briefing, he said India takes very serious
view of such actions which are aimed at subverting the country's unity and
violating its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It is highly unfortunate that the OIC continues to be
guided by a single member's political agenda rather than focusing on important
development activities, Bagchi said in an indirect reference to Pakistan.
"We have repeatedly called upon the OIC to
refrain from allowing vested interests to exploit the platform for comments on
India's internal affairs," he said.
Bagchi was replying to a question on reports about the
OIC inviting the chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference to attend the
meeting of the grouping's Council of Foreign Ministers on 22 and 23 March in
Islamabad.

Turkey Calls for Recognition of the Taliban’s Islamic
Emirate of Afghanistan

Institutute for Near East Policy

by Aaron Y. Zelin
Mar 17, 2022
Since the Taliban took over Kabul last August, the
group has sought international recognition for its Islamic Emirate in
Afghanistan. When Taliban forces first held the country from 1996 to 2001, only
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates recognized their rule.
Today, no government has officially done so.
On March 13, however, Turkish foreign minister Mevlut
Cavusoglu told the Antalya Diplomacy Forum that humanitarian aid on its own
cannot adequately address Afghanistan’s problems, and that countries should
offer diplomatic recognition of the Islamic Emirate as well—the first time a
foreign political leader has publicly called for this step. The remark was
delivered in the context of Turkey and Qatar reportedly nearing a deal with the
Taliban to run the international airports in Kabul and other cities.
The Antalya forum also provided the Taliban with
opportunities to demonstrate the thawing of its international isolation
first-hand. Its foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, met with Turkish president
Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the event—the second leader to host him since he
visited Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan last November. In addition, the
group held side meetings with the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Finland,
Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Qatar, Somalia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Venezuela, along
with U.S. special representative for Afghanistan Thomas West.
The developments at Antalya were the culmination of
several months’ worth of intensive Taliban diplomacy. As of March 17, the group
had publicly announced 135 diplomatic meetings since taking over, with several
of them occurring in multilateral settings. Turkey was involved in 22 of those
meetings, the most of any country.
Besides Qatar—whose close relations with the Taliban
are partly due to Doha’s role in facilitating the U.S. withdrawal
agreement—Turkey has been the country most engaged in working with the group.
This relationship began in earnest last October, when Cavusoglu invited a
Taliban delegation to Ankara for discussions on bilateral relations, trade,
humanitarian aid, refugees, and aviation. The visitors also met with the head
of Turkey’s Diyanet religious institution, as well as delegations from the
ulama (Islamic scholars), the Turkish Red Crescent, and the Disaster and
Emergency Management Authority, indicating that religious solidarity would join
humanitarian assistance as an important aspect of the budding relationship.
One of the key conduits for deepening these relations
has been Turkish ambassador Cihad Erginay, who stated in January, “When
everyone left and closed their diplomatic missions, we stayed in Afghanistan to
help the Afghans.” Two months later, Turkey expanded its in-country diplomatic
corps by opening consular services in Mazar-e Sharif.
Turkey has also delivered the most humanitarian aid to
Afghanistan, reaching at least thirteen of the country’s thirty-four provinces.
This assistance extends beyond the government level, with several key Turkish
NGOs delivering aid as well: Red Crescent, the Humanitarian Relief Fund (IHH),
Heyder Helping and Solidarity Association, Besir Association, Hayrat Yardim,
International Blue Crescent, and the Turkish Maarif Foundation. Beyond
immediate relief, IHH has engaged the Taliban on projects such as strengthening
agricultural cooperation and building an orphanage in Ghazni province.
Similarly, the Maarif Foundation has opened a few Afghan-Turkish schools and
aims to add more soon.
The Turkish government is likewise looking to boost
the education sector. Earlier this month, Ambassador Erginay met with the
Taliban’s minister of higher education, Abdul Baqi Haqqani; they were joined by
the embassy’s advisor for education affairs and the head of the Turkish
Education Foundation. During a follow-on meeting with members of the foundation
and the president of Kabul University, Haqqani called on Turkey to help
standardize religious and modern sciences curricula as the leader of the Islamic
umma (nation). Ankara has also promised to help establish a maternity ward at
Aliabad Teaching Hospital and an online teaching program at Afghan
International University.
On the commercial front, the Taliban has engaged with
delegations from the Turkish Independent Industrialists and Businessmen’s
Association (MUSIAD) and the Afghan-Turkish Businessmen’s Union. Both
organizations have expressed a desire to invest in Afghanistan.
These and other developments indicate that the formal
legal step of granting the Taliban de jure recognition is only a matter of time
for some countries—at least a few such announcements can be expected in the
near to medium term. Unlike the first time the group was in power, it is now
far more connected to the international system. Thirty-four countries have
shown some level of engagement with Taliban authorities, and de facto
recognition—that is, acknowledging a new regime via noncommittal acts, without
making it eligible for a seat at the United Nations—has become an accepted reality.
To be sure, Western countries will be more reticent to
offer formal recognition anytime soon given the first Islamic Emirate’s hostile
track record, which included hosting al-Qaeda and allowing Afghanistan to
become a staging ground for the 9/11 attacks and other terrorist operations.
Yet transactional humanitarian assistance and diplomatic engagement from the
West will likely grow over time.
For the United States, the biggest question is whether
the Taliban will fulfill its pledge to prevent any actors inside Afghanistan
from launching terrorist attacks abroad. According to the 2022 Annual Threat
Assessment issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence,
senior al-Qaeda leaders currently “lack an operational presence in
Afghanistan.” Yet Washington should continue tracking this issue closely even
if it seems manageable at the moment.
U.S. officials should also stay abreast of Turkey’s
leading role in rehabilitating the Taliban’s image and integrating the group
into the international system. This entails continued dialogue with Ankara
about the progress it is making on this front, so that the U.S. government
remains fully informed about the Taliban’s activities as a nascent governing
entity.

Didsbury Mosque 'Turned A Blind Eye' To Islamist Extremism
Before The Manchester Arena Terror Attack
Didsbury Mosque (Image:

By John Scheerhout
18 MAR 2022
The mosque attended by Manchester Arena suicide bomber
Salman Abedi 'preferred to turn a blind eye' to Islamist extremism rather than
tackle it head on, families of those who died in the 2017 terror attack have
said.
Didsbury Mosque 'buried its head in the sand',
sidelined a liberal imam who spoke out against violent jihad and still to this
day has not published a condemnation of violence on its website, according to
their QC.
Suicide bomber Salman Abedi, who murdered 22 innocents
when he detonated a huge improvised device in his backpack at the end of an
Ariana Grande concert, and his jailed brother, Hashem Abedi, attended the
mosque on Burton Road in west Didsbury as youngsters and their father, Ramadan
Abedi, performed the call to prayer.
Ismail Abedi, the elder brother, volunteered in the
mosque's Arabic school - and their mother taught there briefly. As the public
inquiry into the atrocity drew to a close this week, the mosque was slammed by
John Cooper QC, who represents the biggest group of bereaved families.
It has emerged counter terror police tried to engage
with mosques in south Manchester in a bid to get imams to discourage young men
from travelling to Syria to fight.
But the response of Didsbury Mosque in April 2016 was
'less positive' than the others, the head of Counter Terrorism Policing North
West Dominic Scally has told the inquiry. He clarified: "The other mosques
responded to police contact in a more positive fashion; in particular, we had
more frequent contact with the other mosques and contact with a broader range
of more senior members of those mosques."

Hate peddled against Kashmiri Muslims has made our
students vulnerable: Omar Abdullah
Peerzada Ashiq
MARCH 18, 2022
Former Chief Minister and National Conference (NC)
vice president Omar Abdullah on Friday expressed fears that young students from
Kashmir may be targeted across the country due to hate peddled against the
entire ‘Kashmiri nation’, while making reference to recent Bollywood movie The
Kashmir Files.
“If any student is attacked or harmed in any State in
India, the Centre and that State government have to take the blame for it. A
perception is being created that all Kashmiri Muslims do not stand other
faiths. I fear that the hatred propagated may have consequences for young
Kashmiri students studying outside, who are just in their 20s and were not even
born in 1990. They are being made vulnerable,” Mr. Abdullah said on the death
anniversary of senior NC leader Wali Mohammad Itoo, who was assassinated in
1990 by gunmen.

Aligarh mosque covered ahead of Holi &
Shab-e-Barat
Mar 18, 2022
AGRA: In a bid to prevent any "untoward
incidents" on Holi, which is also the day Friday prayers will be offered
along with the Shab e-Barat celebrations, the district administration on
Wednesday night covered the decades-old Sabji Mandi mosque with a tarpaulin in
"communally-sensitive" Aligarh and deployed additional police force
in the town.
Authorities said the step was taken as a
"precautionary measure". Four years ago, chief minister Yogi
Adityanath had directed all district officials to cover religious places in
order to "avoid colour being thrown on them". Such incidents in the
past had led to tensions between the two communities. Though this particular
mosque in Sabji Mandi, which has a mixed population in terms of religion, has
been kept covered on Holi since 2019, the administration and police are taking
extra precautions this year as Shab-e-Barat and Friday prayers are on the same
day.

Karnataka Mulls Re-Exam For Some Muslim Students Who
Could Not Attend Classes Over The Hijab Row
Mar 18, 2022
BENGALURU: The Karnataka government is likely to
consider giving those Muslim students who could not attend classes over the
hijab row another chance to appear for practical and preparatory exams.
Replying to the request by BJP MLA Raghupathi Bhat to
give one more chance for students to write exams, law and parliamentary affairs
minister JC Madhuswamy said the government would consider allowing those who
boycotted exams before the high court gave its interim order on hijab.
"We'll take a call after consulting the CM," he said. He said the
government cannot give another chance to those who continued to skip exams
after the HC's interim order. "It is like defying the HC order and giving
them another opportunity is not possible. This is my opinion," Madhuswamy
said.

Barbaric hostage diplomacy counterproductive for Iran
DR. AZEEM IBRAHIM
March 18, 2022
To the delight of all, UK national Nazanin
Zaghari-Ratcliffe has finally been released after six years of detention on the
most bogus of charges in Iran. UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Wednesday
confirmed that London had paid £400 million ($525 million) of “legitimate debt”
to Tehran and received assurances that it would only be used for humanitarian
purposes. The debt originated in the 1970s, when the shah of Iran paid for
1,500 British tanks but, before he could take delivery, was ousted by the current
regime, which subsequently became the biggest exporter of terror around the
globe.
The UK government rightly decided that the delivery of
cutting-edge military equipment to such a regime was not responsible. But the
mullahs never gave up on getting their refund and resorted to their
well-practiced policy of hostage diplomacy. Such hostage taking has been part
of the Islamic Republic’s “diplomatic” arsenal from its very foundation in
1979, starting with the notorious Iran hostage crisis, which saw the new regime
in Tehran hold dozens of American diplomatic personnel for more than a year.

Russia has lost 7,000 soldiers in Ukraine in 20 days,
more than America lost in 20 years in Afghanistan & Iraq: US
Mar 17, 2022
WASHINGTON: Russia has lost more than 7,000 soldiers
in 20 days in Ukraine, roughly the same number of United States troops killed
in 20 years in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to American intelligence
estimates being dished out amid an emerging replay of Washington's proxy war that
trapped the former Soviet Union in Afghanistan between 1978 and 1988.
The alleged fatalities, on top an estimated 21,000
wounded casualties, means nearly 20 per cent of the 150,000 invading Russian
force is out of commission in a disastrous mission that the US leaders are
saying will be further aggravated with accelerated supply of lethal American
weapons to Ukraine.

3.17.2022
From Parbeen v. Bari, decided yesterday by the Florida
Court of Appeal (Fourth District), in an opinion by Judge Alan Forst, joined by
Chief Judge Burton Conner and Judge Jeffrey Kuntz:
This case concerns a prenuptial agreement made by the
parties on September 14, 2015, and its impact on their subsequent divorce. In
lieu of a conventional prenuptial agreement, the parties opted instead to enter
a type of traditional Islamic prenuptial contract known as a "Mahr."
Although the agreement was entered into in Bangladesh, neither party claims
that it should be interpreted under the secular laws of that nation.
