Zelensky's Muslim Card? Ukraine President Hosts Iftar, Slams Russian 'Repression' of Crimean Minority

by: Majid Alam

--------------

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday criticised Russia’s treatment of the Muslim-minority Tatar community in Kremlin-controlled Crimea and vowed to recapture the peninsula from Russia during a first official state iftar.

Russia wrested control of the Black Sea territory from Ukraine in 2014 and pushed through a referendum on the annexation that was condemned as fraudulent and illegitimate by Ukraine and its Western allies.

“Russia’s attempt to enslave Ukraine … began exactly with the occupation of Crimea, exactly with repressions against Crimean, Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar freedom and of Crimean Muslims," he told Ukrainian Muslim leaders and ambassadors from Muslim countries.

Moscow then banned the Mejlis — the traditional assembly of the Tatar Muslim minority in Crimea — declaring it an extremist organisation and has jailed members of the community since, citing security concerns.

“There is no alternative for Ukraine, or for the world, other than the de-occupation of Crimea. We will return to Crimea," Zelensky said, before handing out awards to several Muslim Ukrainian servicemen.

Zelensky, speaking at a mosque outside the centre of the capital, announced that Ukraine was beginning a new tradition of hosting an official iftar, the meal breaking the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

“Ukraine is grateful to the Muslims of our country and to everyone in the Muslim community of the world who, like us, longs for peace and protection from evil," he added.

Several Muslim-majority countries, including Turkey and Saudi Arabia, have positioned themselves as mediators in the conflict in Ukraine, brokering agreements between Kyiv and Moscow on grain exports or prisoner exchanges.

Russia has a large Muslim minority from southern regions, including Chechnya and Dagestan, many of whom are fighting for Moscow in Ukraine.

BJP plans massive Muslim outreach in UP during PM's 100th 'Mann Ki Baat' episode

Apr 9, 2023

NEW DELHI: To woo the Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is planning a massive outreach through Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 100th 'Mann Ki Baat' episode on April 30.

The Minority Morcha of the UP BJP unit is preparing to organise a massive telecast of the 100th 'Mann Ki Baat' radio telecast at over 100 places associated with the Muslim community in the state, including madrassas and dargahs.

According to a source, "PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' 100th episode will be a game-changer. The episode will air on April 30. We are planning to make the 100th 'Mann Ki Baat' a historic event. We are planning to organise 100 places belonging to the Muslim community including 50-60 madrassas, 30-35 dargahs and majlis where the people of the community can gather and listen to the PM."

The source further said that the Urdu version of 'Mann Ki Baat' -- originally a compilation of the PM's 12 monthly broadcasts aired between January and December 2022 -- would also be made available to clerics and religious scholars.

He said, "We want to ensure that the Prime Minister's vision for the nation reaches everyone. Ahead of the 100th episode, the Urdu translation of 'Mann Ki Baat' and a booklet will be formally launched at a grand event in Lucknow and distributed among the Muslim community at these 100 places on April 30."

Through Minority Morcha meetings, the BJP has been consistently reaching out to a section of the Muslim population, mostly focused on Pasmanda Muslims, who belong to Dalit and OBC communities.

A few days ago, the BJP nominated Tariq Mansoor, the former vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. Muslims constitute about 19 per cent of the state's electorate and have a good presence in at least 30 Lok Sabha seats. Out of which they play a major role in deciding the result in 15 to 20 constituencies.

This time not only within India but people in other countries would also be able to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 100th episode of the radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat'. For the same, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) preparations are in full swing.

"The purpose of broadcasting the programme across the world is because PM Narendra Modi is a global leader. All the countries appreciate the work of the Prime Minister. People want to hear him. Our aim is that we broadcast PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' to as many countries as possible," said the source.

"In every Lok Sabha, in 100 places, 100 people will sit and listen to the 'Mann Ki Baat' episode, in which different groups of doctors, engineers, teachers, and social workers will also tune in and all other sections of the society. Apart from this, those who have been awarded with Padma Bhushan or Padma Vibhushan will also be honoured and will be heard," said the BJP leader.

BJP's national general secretary Dushyant Gautam and Vinod Tawde are in-charge of the 'Mann Ki Baat' programme, and under their leadership, this programme will be conducted across the states. BJP has prepared a whole team for this.

-------------

KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the unity government to practise the balance emphasised in the Quran when making policies.

“That’s why we cannot simply destroy the hills, cut down the trees, because there’s no equilibrium or balance (practised)... when damage happens, it will always affect the people, especially those who are poor.

“When a person is appointed as a minister, he represents all the people, which means the people’s concerns must be heard and the government’s policies must take into account the balance mentioned in the Quran,” he said in his speech at the Nur Ramadan programme here today.

In conjunction with Nuzul Quran which is observed today, Anwar called on Muslims to take advantage of it to read, digest and understand the holy verses of the Quran.

At the event, the Prime Minister handed over a cash donation of RM200 to 300 asnaf and hardcore poor from the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency.

A total of 3,300 people received the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur’s Nur Ramadan donation this year.

UAE faithful unite to celebrate Ramadan, Easter and Passover

-------------

A powerful call for peace infused with optimism has united thousands of people from the Abrahamic faiths in prayer, marking a special time on the spiritual calendar as Ramadan, Easter and Passover coincide.

In a world reeling from conflict and suffering, religious heads and residents are seeing it as a time to celebrate, accept differences and reflect on the common threads that bind diverse communities in the UAE.

Churches in the UAE were filled with joyful celebrations as the Christian community was celebrating Easter this weekend after a month of fasting and prayer.

The Muslim faithful have crossed the halfway mark during a month of fasting that is also a time for reflection, sacrifice and forgiveness.

For the first time in the UAE, members of the Jewish community were gathering in a purpose-built synagogue on Saadiyat Island for the eight-day Passover festival that began on April 5 and ends next week. Others met in homes and hotels.

When greetings of Happy Easter, Ramadan Kareem and Chag Sameach or ‘Happy Festival’ are exchanged, it also symbolises the unique position of the Emirates where people of the world’s major religions visibly celebrate their faith.

“We need a reliable hope on which to build relationships and promote the common good together with all men and women of goodwill,” he said in an Easter message shared with The National.

“This announcement of joy and hope also resounds even today in a world afflicted by so much suffering and uncertainty. There are wars and conflicts that bring destruction and death to many in different parts of the world.

As pews filled up across the emirates, parishioners packed into churches and stood outdoors to listen to services that celebrated the resurrection of Christ.

The bishop called on people to promote reconciliation, build a more fraternal world as they enjoy a festival that proclaimed the victory over evil and death.

During the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset and strengthen their faith through increased recitation of the Quran.

Many devote more time on charitable work, others perform Umrah, an optional pilgrimage to Makkah, the birthplace of the Prophet Mohammed in Saudi Arabia.

As the final 10 nights of Ramadan draw nearer, piety is believed to increase with the tahajjud prayers held from midnight onwards at mosques.

“The very foundation of the religion is to bring people closer together, fostering harmony and understanding among diverse groups of individuals,” he told The National.

“The understanding of differences in colour, language, race and even understanding and perception as a divine law and one of God’s splendid signs has been the cornerstone of the UAE’s approach to fostering a culture of coexistence and tolerance.”

He said while some nations suffered from conflict and discord as they failed to accept differences, the UAE’s multicultural environment enabled people of different faith to perform religious rituals and celebrate occasions without limits on their freedom.

“The UAE has exemplified how embracing differences and understanding the essence of Islam can lead to a prosperous, harmonious society where everyone can coexist peacefully, Mr Al Ansari said.

“The unique example of the UAE is the result of a country of rulers, government and people who build on the principle of — You and I are children of one father and one mother, we all strive to fulfil God’s saying in the Quran: Surely this community of yours is one community and I am your lord, so worship me.”

“This proud nation built on the principles of tolerance, respect and unity has become a shining example of harmonious coexistence in today’s world,” he said.

The Jewish community said they cherished the spiritual freedom to celebrate the eight-day festival that began with the main ceremony of “seder”, or order, in Hebrew.

A festive meal followed to include matzah — an unleavened flatbread — during which the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt was retold at different stages during the meal.

The milestone site on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island hails the shared values of Islam, Judaism and Christianity with a mosque, synagogue and church at one site.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the openness of the society here and the decision of the leadership to welcome people of all different backgrounds and religions,” said Mr Sievers, head of a private, non-profit organisation.

“The Abrahamic Family House gives actual physical form to this by having the mosque, church and the synagogue in the same compound even though each is separate and has its own congregation.”

Thousands of Jews will travel to the UAE this year to explore the country, attracted by stories of safety and tolerance shared by others who live and work here.

“As Jews we see a wonderful opportunity here in the UAE for the monotheistic religions to encounter each other and to promote peace and understanding.

Hundreds of Israeli Settlers Invade Courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Performed Provocative Rituals

April, 2023

Hundreds of colonial Israeli settlers invaded Sunday, 9 April 2023, the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque and performed provocative rituals, citing the so-called Jewish Passover holiday as a pretext.

Local media sources reported that more than 500 Israeli settlers backed by well-armed Israeli forces broke into the courtyards of Al-Aqsa and performed provocative Talmudic rituals in some of its yards.

Meanwhile, Israeli occupation forces are widely spread across the compound of the Al-Aqsa Mosque to secure the colonial settlers’ incursions, prohibiting the presence of Palestinians.

The right-wing Temple Mount Groups mobilized their colonial settler to carry out large-scale incursions into the Al-Aqsa mosque and offer animal sacrifices in coincide with the days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Illegal settlers performed provocative Talmudic rituals, read biblical passages aloud and collectively, and conducted evocative dances in Al-Aqsa Mosque yards.

Colonial settlers’ backed by the Israeli occupation forces repeatedly invade Muslims and holy places in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem in a flagrant violation of all international conventions and laws, guaranteeing Palestinian people’s right to worship in their sacred places.

In 2022, 56670 colonial Israeli settlers invaded Al-Aqsa Mosque courtyards and performed Talmudic provocative rituals in its courtyards, according to Palestinian figures.

Six groups working to support and empower LGBTQ+ Muslims this Ramadan

By Nathan Clarke

9 APR 2023

Ramadan can be a lonely time for LGBT Muslims. With family and community right at the heart of Ramadan , it can be a difficult month for LGBTQ+ Muslims cut off by those around them because of their identity.

The belief that one must choose between faith and sexuality has led many LGBT Muslims to feel ostracised during the holy month. But over the years, LGBTQ+ Muslims have built their own webs of support for those whose sexuality has put them at odds with their religion.

There are a number of groups and organisations working across the country to support and empower young queer Muslims. We’ve put together a list of resources you can use if you need someone to talk to this Ramadan.

The Inclusive Mosque Initiative are a Queer and Trans inclusive mosque community that holds events online and in-person. They aim to create a safe space for marginalised Muslims. They run a monthly Qur’an discussion group aimed primarily at women, nonbinary and genderqueer people.

Ngalakh: Senegal's Christians and Muslims partake in Easter tradition

By Africa News

09-04-2023

In Senegal, Christians and Muslims reinforce their unity and solidarity with the "Ngalakh" dessert specially prepared for Easter.

In Senegal, where approximately 4 percent of the population is Christian, the feverish preparation that started before Easter to be celebrated on 9 April continues unabated.

Christian families prepare a special dessert for "Good Friday", which represents the end of the Great Lent (Careme) fast that the Christian community keeps during the Easter period and coincides with the Friday before Easter Sunday.

Ngalakh, the first flavour that comes to mind when Easter is mentioned in Senegal, is prepared with "thiakry", a type of semolina commonly used in West Africa, baobab tree fruit, nutmeg, milk, sugar and peanut cream.

Ramadan in the UK: Muslim charities hand out food as economic crisis bites

By Areeb Ullah

9 April 2023

It's a grey afternoon on the eighth day of Ramadan, and lines of women, many with empty prams, are stood outside the East London Mosque in Tower Hamlets.

Soon they begin pushing their prams into the mosque's Maryam Centre, around the corner from the main entrance on the busy Whitechapel Road. From there, the women take the lift up to a disused floor.

The project was initially set up in 2020 to help people, both Muslim and non-Muslim, who lost their jobs due to the lockdown, as well as deliver food to the elderly who were self-isolating for health reasons.

But the UK's worsening cost of living crisis  - during which rising spiralling food and energy costs have seen inflation hit double digits - has pushed demand for the food bank's services to unprecedented levels, leaving volunteers struggling to meet the needs of a community suffering the highest levels of deprivation in the British capital.

Regarded by many measures as the poorest borough in London, Tower Hamlets, where the mosque is based, has the highest level of child poverty in the UK, at 56 percent of children in 2021. It is also home to a sizeable Bangladeshi and Somali Muslim community.

Infighting cannot come at the cost of Umno, says party veep Johari

By ShahrinAizatNoorshahrizam

09 Apr 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has urged both party leaders and members to set aside their differences and work together, as Umno cannot afford to lose any more ground due to conflict.

In an interview published today, he told Malay daily Utusan Malaysia that the Barisan Nasional (BN) lynchpin party’s poor showing at the last general election (GE15) was largely due to internal friction.

He said that any dissatisfaction within Umno must be resolved internally through the party’s supreme council or political bureau.

Public housing residents want to become taxpayers, urge govt to conduct more empowerment programmes

By Soo Wern Jun

09 Apr 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — A stereotype often tagged to residents at the People’s Housing Project (PPR) and public housing (PA) in the city is that they are poor and are always in need of aid.

While some assume that such housing projects are a breeding ground for social problems, these are just the types of prejudice Noor Hayati Ismail, a resident at the PPR Kg Baru Hicom, does not want to live with for the rest of her life.

“I don’t want people to be sceptical of PPR residents, and assume that if you live in a PPR, you belong to that stereotype,” Noor Hayati told Malay Mail when met.

As the secretary of the PPR community organisation, PerwacomPrihatin, she said one of the requests made was for empowerment programmes such as ‘Kita Untuk Kita’ (K2K) by Think City, which is a collaborative programme with the government and community leaders.

Noor Hayati said her hope for the future is for PPR residents to become taxpayers, and contribute to the development of the country.

“Actually it has to do with our wages. In general here, we are recipients of zakat, meaning to say that we are B40 (bottom 40 per cent), 74 per cent of us here earn below RM2,500.

Cultural symposium at Ramadan Book Fair affirms Qatar is one of biggest UN supporters

APRIL 09, 2023

A cultural symposium held at the Ramadan Book Fair at Darb Al Saai headquarters affirmed that the State of Qatar is one of the biggest supporters of the UN programs.

The symposium, lectured by HE President of the United Nations General Assembly's 66th session and the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Nassir bin Abdulaziz Al Nasser, indicated that Qatar has actual influence in the quiet diplomatic field and in leading a global dialogue that achieves peace and supports the spread of tolerance values in international relations.

HE Nassir bin Abdulaziz Al Nasser addressed the great role played by the State of Qatar and is still playing at the international level, as it is supportive of UN programmes, the most important of which is its role in international mediation, as Qatar has gained credibility, respect, and confidence with the international community, noting that this enabled it to use soft power in resolving many international issues.

Non-Muslims extol the virtues of fasting during Ramadan

08/April/2023

MUSCAT: One is a doctor who has served in the Sultanate of Oman for more than three decades. The other, a homemaker, has also been living in the country for more than 30 years.

Col (Dr) Narayan Ramachandran (retd) and Ajitha Subramanian have been fasting during the holy month of Ramadan for the past many years and feel that “the experience gained through fasting has made them better persons”.

As the holy month completed 15 days on Friday, Times of Oman spoke to the fasting non-Muslims to get an insight on the reasons for fasting.

Ramchandran, a well-known orthopaedic surgeon, said: “I started to regularly fast during Ramadan from the year 2000. It all started a year earlier when I was invited to a post-sunset feast (iftar) gathering at an industrial camp in Ghala. I had gone to that iftar after my lunch and evening tea. But what I saw there moved me. I saw the piety on the faces of those workers who waited patiently for the call of prayers before breaking the fast.”

The doctor, who has been actively involved with many social and charitable causes, continued: “I then decided that whenever I attend an iftar, I would keep a fast and I did that in 1999. But from 2000, I decided to keep fast throughout the holy month and have been fasting except for a couple of years when my health didn’t permit it.”

At Egypt’s largest iftar, 5,000 gather in Matareya to break Ramadan fast

Kamal Tabikha

Apr 09, 2023

The narrow streets of Ezbet Hamada, a small low-income neighbourhood in Matareya in north Cairo, came alive with the sound of traditional Ramadan songs.

There was a palpable air of excitement as thousands of residents prepared for the ninth 'Ramadan In Matareya' communal iftar on Thursday.

Held annually, 'Ramadan In Matareya' began in 2012 with five friends who sat together for an iftar on a street in Matareya on the 15th day of the holy month.

What was supposed to be an intimate meal turned into an elaborate one after people began to join meal as the night progressed, Hassan Mehana, 64, a resident of Matareya, told The National.

Iran's unleashed savage aggression is blasphemy to Holy Ramadan

Elnur Enveroglu

9 April 2023

Committing terrorist acts and attempting to kill people is extremely inhumane act, which is far from religion, humanity and Islamic values. Unfortunaltely, in the month of Ramadan, when the Holy Qur'an was revealed, and it is considered a month of fasting and spiritual purification for Muslims, the country called Iran has further activated its savage aggression; it seems that the mullah regime in Iran, which presents itself as the defender of Islamic values in the world, does not refrain from its evil deeds even in such a holy month.

Iran is applying the principle of diplomats , ” the enemy of my enemy is my friend , ” In this sense , al – Qaeda and many other Iran-finaced terrorist groups and proxies are working against the countries thatoppose the Tehran regime.

It is believed that Hezbollah is the first and greatest supporter of the terrorist organizations that are run by Iran, as it began its work in 1986 as it governs Lebanon, which is the main force inside Syrian territory executing the policy and targets of Tehran. Besides that, Iran finances many small terrorist groups that are linked to its large networks and some of which attempts to carry out its dirty mission in our country under the guise of religion.

In a nutshell, the bullet fired at MP Fazil Mustafa in Ramadan is a bullet fired at the people of Azerbaijan and the hostility of the mullah regime against the people of Azerbaijan. Similarly, the attack on the embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran and the martyrdom of our officer was a treacherous attack by the evil mullah regime on our country and our people.

After the Iranian revolution, Iran and its people have become interpolated with anti-American, anti-West sentiments and all its allies in the region.

Jewish worshipers visit Temple Mount amid simmering tensions

By TOI STAFF

09-04-2023

OferLefler, spokesman for the Israel Airports Authority, says Israelis have been crossing the Egyptian border to Sinai in unprecedented numbers this Passover.

Ben Gurion Airport is also working at a very high capacity, with almost 80,000 using the airport each day on average, and an expected 2.2 million for the month.

Rabbi Leo Dee’s daughters 20-year-old Maia and 15-year-old Rina were killed when Palestinian gunmen opened fire at their car, causing it to crash into the highway’s shoulder. The terrorists then opened fire at the car again, killing the two sisters and critically wounding their mother.

“We are saddened about the current political tension in Israel which is caused by a lack of trust in its first religious Zionist government,” Dee says.

Difa-i-Pakistan Council resurfaces to warn of ‘conspiracies’

Kalbe Ali

April 9, 2023

ISLAMABAD: The Difa-i-Pakistan Council (DPC), an umbrella coalition of primarily jihadi groups which had been dormant for several years, huddled at a local hotel with a one-point agenda — deliberations on how to pre-empt ‘conspiracies’ allegedly hatched by politicians to hurt the ‘national interest’.

The DPC was established in 2011 in reaction to the killings of Pakistani soldiers by the US forces at the Pak-Afghan border. It, however, remained inactive after the murder of its founder Maulana Samiul Haq in 2018.

During the “emergency meeting”, without naming any particular political party, the outfit talked about a “conspiracy by politicians to bring chaos and anarchy” in the country allegedly at the behest of the global powers.

Addressing the meeting, DPC Chairman Maulana Hamidul Haq Haqqani said that the “global forces were conspiring to weaken Pakistan”.

LAHORE: An ‘emergency’ meeting of the federal cabinet has been called on the weekly holiday (today) to decide whether funds should be released to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for holding the polls in Punjab on May 14, or show open defiance to the orders of the Supreme Court.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb told Dawn that the meeting would be held in Lahore with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair.

Sanaullah favours polls in October due to financial constraints

Agencies

April 9, 2023

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Saturday said keeping in view the financial position of the country, holding of general elections in October would be a good option for the government.

Talking to a private news channel, he said the judiciary should constitute a full court to hear petitions of political parties regarding the elections. He said political parties have made a request to the Supreme Court for constituting a larger bench to listen to the genuine complaints of public representatives regarding elections in Punjab.

The minister said the government is engaged in compiling the digital census, and security personnel have also been deployed for security of the staff collecting the census data. He said the government will provide security and financial resources to the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold transparent elections in October.

Federal minister and senior PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif said his party would accept the general elections only if its leadership was given level playing field in the political process.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, he said no political party wanted to avoid elections, but level playing field should be given to all before holding general elections this year, adding that the PML-N leadership had always accepted court decisions and never indulged in politics of agitation.

Pakistan Releases 208 Afghan Detainees From Its Prisons

By Digital Desk

09-04-2023

Afghanistan's Foreign Affairs department announced the release and repatriation of 208 detainees from Pakistani jails, reported Kabul-based Khaama Press. The Foreign Affairs Department of Afghanistan added that the Afghan Embassy in Islamabad and the Afghan Consulate General in Karachi collaborated to ensure the safe return of the 208 released detainees.

According to the statement, the Taliban government of Afghanistan provided financial assistance for the transfer of all the prisoners to Kabul. The Afghan Diaspora Network has reported that over one million Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan are caught between the Taliban and Islamabad, as the latter is allegedly pressuring them into returning to Afghanistan and facing a precarious existence.

Afghan civilians have been compelled to flee their homes repeatedly over the past few decades, whenever the nation has been plunged into conflicts, including during the Cold War era and after the resurgence of the Taliban. The report stated that Pakistan has played a "snakes and ladders" game with the Afghan people over the years.

How Bangladesh’s opposition ‘MaayerDaak’ betrayed victims' families to help BNP win western support

Sahidul Hasan Khokon

Apr 8, 2023

By Sahidul Hasan Khokon: For Shafiq Ullah Monaem's father, finding the whereabouts of his son, missing for over 15 years, is still a futile but compulsive exercise.

The teary-eyed man said he has had enough of the rights platform 'MayeerDaak' and that he is no longer counting on them to deliver.

MayeerDaak, named after Argentina's popular platform Mothers' Call formed in 1960 to help families come to terms with enforced disappearances, has been asking the families to show up at opposition rallies to demand the ouster of the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led government.

The agenda is obvious - leveraging the tragedy of families like Monayem to push the agenda of a regime change, alleged a number of family members who parted with the platform.

Groups in Afghanistan Causing Instability in Pakistan, Islamic Emirate Denies

This concern was expressed during the National Security Council of Pakistan's 41st meeting, which took place on Friday in Islamabad and was presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

"It was noted that due to return of the dangerous terrorists and support of different terrorist organisations to them from Afghanistan, peace and stability, which was the result of innumerable sacrifices and continuous efforts, was affected," the statement added.

"The National Security Committee of Pakistan has declared in its recent statement that armed organizations are present in Afghanistan and are cooperating with terrorists in Pakistan. So, this is not a new issue, but it has been mentioned many times before,” said Tahir Khan, a Pakistani journalist.

Army veteran GOP rep pushes to impeach defense secretary over 'woke' military, Afghanistan debacle

By Michael Lee

09-04-2023

A Republican legislator is pushing to impeach Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin over the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal and for promoting a "woke" military culture that has allegedly contributed to recruiting woes.

"Not only do we have a 25,000-plus recruitment shortage, but there were 8,400 people who were unconstitutionally purged from the military … you've got pronouns and DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] being taught at our military academies when we need to be focusing on what the next threat is and how we mitigate it."

Mills' comments come after the Florida Republican had a testy exchange with Austin at last week's House Armed Services Committee hearing, where Mills presented Austin with articles of impeachment.

"Not only do I believe that you should have resigned ... I myself perceive this as a dereliction of duty, and I take that very seriously," Mills told Austin during the hearing before recounting what he believed were Austin's failures during the Afghanistan withdrawal. "Political optics was placed above the true military strategy, where we should have held Bagram Air Base, held the detention center … not shut down and entrap Americans by taking over HKIA (Hamid Karazai International Airport), the commercial airspace and abandoning thousands of Americans."

Reopening of Tallah Bridge and borders with Bangladesh boost Chaitra, Eid sales

BISHWABIJOY MITRA

08.04.23

COVID and online shopping portals had robbed hawkers and owners of small shops, stalls and kiosks during the pandemic years, but all that is past now, and especially in Kolkata's budget bazaars, shoppers seem to be back to their old haunts this PoilaBaisakh and Eid.

Shinjini Ghosh of Barrackpore, a student and budding social media fashion influencer, is always on the lookout for affordable make-up kits. Hatibagan being the biggest market near her place, she often drops visits and during the Chaitra sale, she has already made several trips to the market.

“There’s a plethora of offers and shoppers are spoilt with bumper discounts and offers and this is the best time to stock up on your year-long make-up,” she said.

However, the past two years weren’t like this. After Tallah Bridge was closed in 2019, and during the COVID era, the bustling business was hugely dented. Customers like Shinjini, from the northern suburbs of Kolkata, could not reach the market and had relied mostly on online shopping and the local markets because there was no easy way to reach Hatibagan via road. Similarly, the Chaitra sale at New Market is also booming with the return of Bangladeshi buyers, especially for the upcoming Eid, after the international borders have been reopened.

Canadian minister denounces hate crime at mosque

Canada’s Trade Minister Mary Ng condemned on Saturday a hate crime at a mosque saying the incident, which an Islamic society said had apparently involved an attempt to tear a copy of the Muslim holy book, had no place in Canadian society.

The Islamic Society of Markham (ISM) said in a statement an individual had come into the mosque in Markham, 30 kilometers north of Toronto, on Thursday and apparently torn a Quran, ranted at worshippers, and then tried to ram them with his vehicle.

“Deeply disturbed to hear of the violent hate crimes and racist behavior at the Islamic Society of Markham,” Ng said in a post on Twitter.

Senegalese dessert symbolizes Christian-Muslim solidarity

Fatma Esma Arslan

09.04.2023

Hortensia AlaofaryKanfoudy is happy to continue a tradition of sharing a special Easter dessert with her Muslim neighbors and friends in Senegal.

Christians and Muslims demonstrate unity and solidarity by sharing the dessert called ngalakh, which is often prepared by the Christian community for Easter celebrations.

When Easter is mentioned in Senegal, the first flavor that comes to mind is ngalakh. The sweet dish is made with thiakry, a type of semolina commonly used in West Africa, along with baobab fruit, nutmeg, milk, sugar and peanut cream.

Christian families get together at the home of an elder early Friday to prepare ngalakh, which is intended to feed not only their families but neighbors as well.

Ramadan Talk Day 18: How compensation can be done for the aged, deceased

April 9, 2023

The aged are considered to have lost their strength and as a result of age, they are weaker by the day. So, Allah has permitted that they should not fast if they cannot afford to fast but feed the poor. See Quran Q2 :184.

Again, those who have become insane are also exempted. Their families don’t have to do fidyah on their behalf because such people, by their condition will not be held responsible for their action, until they become sane. Although we have some people with periodic madness, they may fast when they are of sound mind.

Again, it is important to note that feeding the poor as compensation for fasting is done by giving food to the poor and not by giving money. Fidyah is done with food. You can only give money to a caterer or somebody else to prepare the food for the poor instead of giving money to the poor. Note that Fidyah is not zakaat.

Jordan warns Israel of ‘catastrophic consequences’ if al-Aqsa mosque stormed again

By Mohammed Tawfeeq

April 8, 2023

CNN — Jordan has warned of “catastrophic consequences” if Israeli forces were to storm the al-Aqsa mosque again.

Should the Israeli police, “assault worshipers again, in an attempt to empty [the mosque] of worshipers, in preparation for major incursions into the mosque,” it would, “push the situation towards more tension and violence, for which everyone will pay the price,” the Jordanian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ambassador Sinan al-Majali, said in a statement late on Saturday local time.

“The Israeli government bears responsibility for the escalation in Jerusalem and in all the occupied Palestinian territories and for the deterioration that will worsen if it does not stop its incursions into the holy al-Aqsa mosque… and its terrorization of worshipers in these blessed days,” al-Majali said.

The warning from Jordan was followed by a statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry early on Sunday, saying that people who, “barricade themselves inside [the al-Aqsa mosque] are a dangerous mob, radicalized and incited by Hamas and other terror organizations.”

Attack kills around 20 in eastern Congo; Islamic State claims responsibility

Apr 9, 2023

By Reuters: Islamic State on Saturday claimed responsibility for an attack on a village in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that authorities said killed around 20 people.

The attack, which took place on Friday in Musandaba, a village on the outskirts of Beni, is part of a wave of violence against civilians that the army and local authorities blame on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan group based in eastern Congo that has pledged allegiance to Islamic State.

"We counted about 20 dead on Friday in the village of Musandaba," said the military administrator of Beni territory, Colonel Charles Omeonga. He accused the ADF.

E-gaming flourishes among Libyan youth during Ramadan

09/04/2023

In a Tripoli arcade, players banter amid the bleeping and music of video games. Isolated by decades of dictatorship and post-revolution chaos, Libyan gamers are finally taking on the world.

It’s late at night in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and in the suburb of Tajoura, teenagers with headphones clamped to their ears gaze into state-of-the-art screens in the ultra-modern gaming complex.

Unlike in other Arab states, “the gaming community was completely dead here” until recently, says Sofiane Mattouss, who runs the business set up in 2022.

Gaming industry experts say the Middle East and North Africa are high-growth regions, with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt among the largest markets.
