'Ar-Rahma' - The First and Only Mosque in Kyiv; Also One Of The Largest In Europe

----

by Marichka Palamarchuk

May 7, 2023

The Ar-Rahma [Arabic for mercy] mosque, is not just the first and only one in Kyiv; it is also one of the largest in Europe. Rightly considered to be a real crown jewel of modern Islamic architecture, it is a part of the larger Islamic complex on Shchekavytsia Mountain. Built between 1996 and 2012, the complex sits at an iconic spot next to the remains of an ancient Muslim cemetery in an area populated by Muslims since earliest times.

Muslims in Ukraine have waited for a mosque for over 100 years, it is unsurprising that Ar-Rahma's opening was a momentous event. Attempts to build a mosque date back to 1897, when, according to official data, there were 1,759 Muslims, out of a total population of around 100,000, residing in the Ukrainian capital at that time.

By 1913, construction plans were ready and the first foundation stone was laid. However, the outbreak of World War I, the Bolshevik Revolution and the World War II, postponed the dream of having a mosque in the capital of Ukraine for a long time. Construction was only resumed after Ukraine became independent. After obtaining land for construction, extensive legal preparation and work on project documentation, the long-desired

The mosque was built in stages. The construction was funded by Muslims of all ages and social groups as well as substantial financial contributions from the ambassadors of Islamic countries. Oleksandr Komarovsky, one of the city's famous architects, who also designed Independence Square, prepared the engineering project. After Komarovsky's death, the work was carried on by his colleague, the architect SerhiyBabushkin. Famous Muslim architects Riduan and Khoja Ahmad also acted as advisers during preparing of the project.

The mosque covers an area of 3,200 m2. The material for its decoration was delivered from Azerbaijan and the carpets for the prayer hall, which is over 1,000 m2, were sent from Turkey. The mosque has 3 halls containing 24 circular columns.

In addition to these two, the complex has 7 more domes with a height ranging from 1 to 2.5 meters, all of which are covered with copper. The windows under the main domes are made of stained glass.

The mosque has two mihrabs - special niches in the wall indicating the Qibla direction for namaz and two minbars - a platform from which the imam delivers his sermon. In the courtyard, there is a minaret - a tower to call believers to prayer. It is 27 meters high the top of which is reached by an internal spiral staircase consisting of 118 steps.

The mosque hosts events dedicated to Islamic religious holidays, on a regular basis. The "Aya Group" publishing house, the "Mplus" Muslim radio studio, the "Islamic Media" media center, the Quaran reading school, the Halal Certification Center, playgrounds, kindergarten, the "Al-Ishrad" school and Islamic University all operate on the territory of the "Ar-Rahma" Islamic complex. There is also a large Islamic library, containing Islamic literature translated into many languages.

The mosque performs marriage rites (nikah), as well as Islamic healing (ruqya) and burial (jinazah) rituals. Every Friday there is a sermon - khutba and Jumu'ah Namaz.

One of the greatest treasures of the "Ar-Rahma" is a hair from the Prophet Muhammad, a sacred relic. Therefore, Muslims in Ukraine have the unique opportunity to seek blessing from a relic of the Righteous (tabbaruk) in their home country.

The mosque can accommodate about 3,000 people simultaneously and is open to everyone. There are free tours and lectures about Islam and, on Fridays, there is food distribution to those in need. At night, the complex is illuminated in green and looks particularly lovely.

First Muslim, Sultan Al Neyadi, An Astronaut From The UAE, Walks In Space

Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi posted new pictures of his April 28 spacewalk. Photo: @Astro_Alneyadi / Twitter

-----

Elf Habib

May 07, 2023

Sultan Al Neyadi, an astronaut from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), earned a unique honour and created history on April 28, to become not merely the first ever Arab but even the first Muslim to walk in space. The day incidentally being a Friday in many Muslim countries, was also quite auspicious for them. Attired in the requisite space safety and protection gear, he emerged from the International Space Station (ISS), to perform a spacewalk or rather float in space as part of his mission in the ‘Expedition 69’ that lifted off from the NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, in Florida on March 02. His mission comprised a 6.5-hour extravehicular activity or assignment (EVA) that involved the retrieval of a radio frequency communication console meant to be brought back to earth. Neyadi was accompanied by Stephen Bowen of NASA and their stroll also involved some groundwork to enable the ISS to be equipped with new solar panels, planned to be sent from earth by some next mission.

His performance was quite appreciated by the ground controller with the remarks, “That was impressive, Sultan. You have a surgeon’s hand”. This admiration evidently highlighted his precise, refined and systematic knack. He had rigorously trained for the reduced gravity lunar environs by spending more than 55 hours underwater in a specially designed pool at the Houston Centre and earned the NASA’s golden pin award for the astronauts. He is stipulated to stay in space for six months and conduct 19 more experiments dealing with various problems about the back pain plus plant cultivation and growth in space.

But his walk has already vowed the UAE as the first Muslim country to have an astronaut with a spacewalk feat. He is also the first long duration astronaut of the Emirate and the second after Hazza Al Mansouri, who flew to the ISS from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on September 25, 2019, for an eight-day mission. He also conducted some experiments on the innovative use of reduced gravity on various industrial techniques. Neyadi, likewise also shares his stature with eight other Muslims including four from the Soviet and Russian regions and four from KSA, Syria, Malaysia and Afghanistan, who have also visited space.

Yet his iconic eminence, is not merely a spacewalk but also another marvelous milestone for the Emirates’ long cherished ideals and achievements in space. The founder of the UAE, as per some accounts, relished to look at the stars and wonder about reaching them even while building the roads to link various parts of his emerging nation. Idolising his vision, the nation in July 2009, launched Dubai Sat-1, its earth observation satellite, from Baikonur, the Soviet launching site in Kazakhstan. It spurred and stimulated the national space sector and furnished the teams of the space engineering and expertise. An autonomous National Space Agency created in 2014 developed its partnership with the French and UK agencies and was expanded to become Khalifa Mohammad bin Rashi Space Centre in 2015. Barely three years after it enabled the nation to design and build one of the world’s most advanced remote sensing satellite. Known as Khalifa Sat and carried by a Korean Satellite bus, it was launched from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Centre.

The progress in space probes rapidly advanced further and the rover rockets built at the Rashid Centre, started rattling to reach the Mars and Moon. The Mission to study the Mars’ surface and atmosphere, named as Hope, was launched in July 2020 by using nation’s own Rashid Rover spacecraft, sent from the Cape Canaveral site, USA, aboard Falcon 9 by the SpaceX contractors. It entered the Mars’s atmosphere on February 9, 2021, making UAE the first Arab and Muslim country to command a mission to the Mars but also the first in the world to send a mission in that month. It is also ranked with the USA and China to have accomplished a successful mission during that span.

It was named Hope to inspire the Youth’s focus on optimism, innovation and leadership to revive the medieval Arab traditions for advancement of human knowledge and progress. The success was evident once again as yet another Rashid spacecraft was launched to land at the Atlas crater on the nearside of the Moon. Prepared in partnership with Japan, mounted on a Hakuto-R, it lifted off from the same renowned US facility on December 11, 2022.

The probe was equipped with a thermal imaging as well as a high-resolution camera combined to analyse the composition of the lunar geology. They were also meant to record the dust movement above the lunar surface, reveal the nature and approximate amount of various chemicals in its rocks as well as to explore the conditions of its surface plasma. Another unique aspect of the rover was the ingenuity to test a variety of different materials that could be used to build lunar wheels. The materials are attached as adhesive strips to Rashid’s wheels to determine which ones offer the best protection against lunar dust and other harsh conditions. One such material is a graphene-based composite that was devised by the University of Cambridge, UK, and Belgium’s UniversitéLibre de Bruxelles It reached the lunar orbit yet the communications with it were barely seconds before it ventured to land on the Moon.

While the attempts to restore the communication, are eagerly awaited the UAE vision for the National Space Strategy 2030 envisages to enhance and expand the probes, performance and presence of its space sector in space race as well as to improve its contribution to the national economy. in the national economy. Yet another aspect of its initiatives in space, has been to beckon and inspire the other Arab and Muslim countries to Saudi Arabia has already announced some of its space programmes. Its success and eminence, similarly can also encourage some other Muslim countries to venture in the space race.

Tehran Friday Imam Claims Clerics In Iran Are “Oppressed” And Most Live Below The Poverty Line

Tehran interim Friday prayer imam Kazem Seddiqi

-----

07-05-2023

Clerics in Iran are “oppressed” and most live below the poverty line, according to Tehran Friday prayer imam KazemSeddiqi.

Ebrahim Fazel had gone missing on Tuesday as he had travelled from the religious city of Qom – where he was studying at the seminary – to his hometown in the northern province. His body was found in the coastal waters near the city of Jouybar.

The circumstances around his death remain unclear. The evidence has yet to reveal whether he drowned or his body was thrown into the water.

In recent months members of clergy have increasingly become targets of attacks by Iranians who see them as symbolizing the nation’s problems.

Last month, media close to the Revolutionary Guard reported that two clerics were targeted by a driver in Qom after another similar attack a few days earlier. It was the third attack on clerics within a few days. Tehran police announced on April 27 that a manhunt was underway to find another driver in the attempted murder of a cleric in the capital.

Since the 1979 revolution, the clergy have gained increasing power, but discontent has risen in recent years, particularly amid waves of protests over economic, political, and civil rights issues.

'I Don't Want You Staying At Home Making Couscous': What A French Head Teacher Told Muslim Pupils

MAY 6, 2023

By Yasmine Sellami

Last autumn France's Ministry of Education issued an update on the rules and advice to education authorities regarding the wearing of “conspicuous” religious symbols, which are banned in French schools. Mediapart has investigated how this latest advice is being applied in one secondary school in Marseille. Several pupils there who have worn outfits judged to be contrary to the rules say they have been “persecuted” by the school management. They also complain of scandalous comments made by the school's headteacher. Teachers meanwhile talk of a “tense” atmosphere and a divided staffroom. Yasmine Sellami reports.

“It's a good secondary school as long as you don't wear a headscarf.” 'Imène' – not her real name – is a pupil at Victor-Hugo, one of three secondary schools or lycées in Marseille categorised as priority establishments for the southern city in terms of funding and development. Since the start of the current academic year she has been summoned in to see school management four times after her outfits were judged by senior staff and some teachers to be “Islamic”. Under a 2004 French law the wearing of “conspicuous” religious symbols is banned in the country's schools. “I no longer know what to wear,” she says.

In Kyrgyzstan, There Now Really are More Mosques than Schools

Paul Goble

May 6, 2023

Staunton, May 2 – Four years ago, the former president of Kyrgyzstan remarked that his country had “more mosques than schools.” SooronbayZheyenbekov said that was a good thing because the mosques helped raise children with good manners who then formed the backbone of the Kyrgyz nation.

His remark, however, triggered concerns that Kyrgyzstan, which had largely the avoided the explosion of mosque construction in the first decade of independent life, was not becoming Islamicized and that the mosques were a major force in this process, something the state had to do something about lest Kyrgyzstan destabilize or become an Islamic state.

Those concerns continue with each side in the debate offering evidence for its position. The state is confident that it has the mosques under control because it requires the country’s 2800 imams to provide monthly reports about what they are doing to prevent the radicalization of young people.

Satellite images show tankers Iran seized off Bandar Abbas

By JON GAMBRELL

07-05-2023

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Satellite images analyzed Sunday by The Associated Press show two oil tankers recently seized by Iran off the coast of one of its key port cities on the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The photos from Planet Labs PBC showed the Advantage Sweet and the Niovi anchored just south of Bandar Abbas near a naval base in the port city in Iran’s Hormozgan province Saturday. Their capture represents just the latest ship seizure conducted by Iran amid tensions with the West over its rapidly advancing nuclear program, though it appears the two ships may have been taken for different reasons.

Iran seized the Marshall Islands-flagged Advantage Sweet, staffed by 23 Indians and one Russian, on April 27 as it traveled in the Gulf of Oman. Tehran claimed the vessel had struck another ship, though tracking data for the Advantage Sweet showed no erratic behavior on its trip. Iran has made claims in the past over ship seizures to cover for the vessels being taken to use as pawns in negotiations with the West.

China Asks Afghanistan's Taliban to Address Terrorism Worries

May 06, 2023

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN— Pakistan on Saturday hosted top diplomats from neighboring China and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan for a trilateral dialogue that seeks to promote regional security, trade, transit, and counterterrorism collaboration.

Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, who faces United Nations travel restrictions, was granted a waiver to attend the meeting in Islamabad. Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and his Pakistani counterpart, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, led their respective delegations at the fifth round of the trilateral framework.

The participants held "productive discussions on political engagement, counterterrorism, trade, and connectivity," said the Pakistani Foreign Ministry in a brief post-meeting statement without elaborating.

Official sources said Pakistani and Chinese delegates had shared with Taliban representatives the security concerns stemming from a growing threat of terrorism in Afghanistan and the challenges it poses to neighboring countries. The delegates exchanged views about how to support the de facto Afghan authorities in the economic reconstruction of the conflict-ravaged impoverished South Asian nation.

Qin said before the trilateral meeting that China and Pakistan were ready to support "actively" the Afghan reconstruction efforts, but he pressed the Taliban to deliver on their regional and international commitments.

Cattle smuggled across Indo-Bangladesh border with help of BSF, claims ED

Rajesh Saha

May 6, 2023

By Rajesh Saha: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has claimed, in its chargesheet submitted against TMC leader AnubrataMondal, that cattle were smuggled across the Indo-Bangladesh border with the help of the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.

The chargesheet was recently filed before the Rouse Avenue court in Delhi. The 204-page chargesheet named AnubrataMondal as an accused in the cattle smuggling case. The central probe agency has alleged that BSF personnel were involved in the smuggling.

On the 12th page of the chargesheet, the ED mentioned that the accused Md. Enamul Haque, Md. AnarulSeikh and Md. Golam Mustafa used to purchase seized cattle, with the help of BSF, at a very low price. The cattle were then shown as auctioned cattle but were illegally smuggled across the Indo-Bangladesh international border.

After botched raid on Parvez Elahi’s house, Lahore police operations chief replaced

Asif Chaudhry

May 7, 2023

LAHORE: The Punjab caretaker government on Saturday transferred Lahore DIG Operations Afzaal Kausar days after the police raid on the residence of Chaudhry Parvez Elahi that also spilt over into the adjoining house of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, causing an outcry from the key government ally.

The transfer order came days after interim chief minister of Punjab Mohsin Naqvi visited the PML-Q president’s residence and assured him that action would be taken against those responsible for misuse of authority during an ‘unreasonable police raid’ for the arrest of the former CM.

However, a police official told Dawn that DIG Kausar was made a scapegoat for the botched raid on Mr Elahi’s residence. He said that the incident had brought embarrassment even for the PML-N ruling in the Centre after some reports emerged that the armed police personnel forcibly entered the adjoining residence of Chaudhry Shujaat.

Public Accounts CommitteeDivided Over Taking Up Case Against SC Judge

Amir Wasim

May 7, 2023

ISLAMABAD: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the parliament is divided over the issue of taking up the case of Supreme Court (SC) judge Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi, who is facing allegations of keeping assets beyond means, Dawn has learnt.

The resentment within the PAC members, including those belonging to the ruling coalition, came to the surface at a time when the National Assembly Secretariat has already issued notices to them for a meeting scheduled to be held on Monday (tomorrow) to take up the case against the SC judge.

The matter had been referred to the PAC by Deputy Speaker Zahid Akram Durrani on the demand of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and federal minister Sardar Ayaz Sadiq during the National Assembly’s sitting on May 4 with the directive to come up with a report within 15 days.

The PML-N leader had raised the issue on a point of order during the Question Hour as lawmakers continued their assault on the superior court judges in the wake of ongoing executive-judiciary tussle over the issue of elections to the Punjab Assembly.

Face-off with PBC leaves SCBA fragmented

Nasir Iqbal

May 7, 2023

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: One of the country’s premier lawyers bodies, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), stands fragmented as a majority group has restrained the association’s president and secretary from taking unilateral decisions.

The group also disapproved the move to challenge the show-cause notices and de-seating of the SCBA secretary and additional secretary by the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC). Ten of the 17 members of the SCBA executive committee passed a resolution stating that they will not support any proceedings against the PBC, which was a regulator of all bar associations, including the SCBA.

Earlier on Friday, an online meeting by the group expressed no confidence in the association’s president Abid S. Zuberi. The move, which could have resulted in Mr Zuberi’s removal, was stayed by the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Saturday.

In its interim order, the SHC suspended the SCBA resolution to de-seat its president till May 18. Justice Nadeem Akhtar also suspended till the next hearing the PBC order to summon some SCBA officer-bearers for not complying with the resolution passed by its executive committee to remove Mr Zuberi.

Covid-19 pandemic over, but MMA says Malaysia must not let guard down entirely

By ShathanaKasinathan

07 May 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Malaysia should continue to take measures that guard against Covid-19 notwithstanding the World Health Organisation declaring an end to the pandemic, the Malaysian Medical Association said.

MMA president Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai said the WHO still maintained that Covid-19 was a significant threat, and countries must take steps to manage its risk as an endemic disease.

Malaysia could play its role in this by adopting long-term prevention, control, and management policies to contain Covid-19 in line with WHO’s response plan, he said.

A Democratic mayor from New Jersey who had his invitation to a White House event pulled still plans to support President Joe Biden for re-election but wants help fixing the problem of systemic profiling that caused the U.S. Secret Service to refuse his admission.

Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah, the longest-serving Muslim mayor in the nation, was invited last month to be at the White House for an Eid al-Fitr celebration but was disinvited just before the event.

“This isn’t Iran.  This isn’t North Korea.  It’s the United States of America,” Khairullah said.  “It’s humiliating when it happens.”

Trump's re-election bid includes plans to reinstate infamous Muslim Ban, add more countries to the list: Reports

ByPaurush Omar

May 06, 2023

Trump first called for a ‘total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States’ during the GOP presidential primary in December 2015

Former President Donald Trump has privately told close associates that he plans to reinstate his infamous "Muslim ban" if he is reelected in 2024, according to US daily Rolling Stone. Trump has reportedly called the policy "beautiful" and has expressed interest in adding more majority-Muslim countries to the list of those banned from entering the United States.

Federal courts blocked the initial order, but in 2018, the Supreme Court narrowly approved a subsequent revision of the ban. President Joe Biden reversed the executive order in one of his first executive orders after taking office.

Atrocities of ‘repentant’ Boko Haram fighters

By Editorial Board

07 May 2023

The arrest, the other day, of a “repentant Boko Haram fighter,” Ba’anaBdiya, over a bomb attack on Nigerian soldiers that led to the deaths of at least three soldiers, is yet another strong indication that the federal government’s safe corridor programme, and its attendant rehabilitation of captured or surrendered terrorists, is wrong headed and unlikely to aid in ending the war against terror. That policy is against the grain of justice, and is unduly exposing Nigerian soldiers to untimely deaths; thus posing whether government is in support of soldiers or terrorists.

The policy takes no cognizance of hundreds of innocent citizens who are victims of terrorist attacks or have lost their relatives and loved ones to these insurgents. Besides, well meaning citizens wonder what the essence of extant laws on terrorism is, if the law cannot be invoked, as conceived, against terrorists and other violators. Government certainly needs a rethink on this policy, to save Nigerian soldiers, and to bring an end to the unceasing war against terror in Nigeria.

The repentant Boko Haram fighter, ‘Ba’ana, also known as ‘Manci,’ was among the thousands of Boko Haram members who were granted amnesty by the Federal Government for laying down his arms and accepting rehabilitation back into society. It was later revealed that despite renouncing his membership of the terror group, he maintained close contact with his former colleagues and has been supplying them with sensitive intelligence information on the movement of Nigerian soldiers, all with a view to ambushing and killing the soldiers.

So far, the intelligence information shared by Manci led to the ambush and killing of many Nigerian soldiers, including three soldiers on the outskirts of Banki town, Borno State where many other people were severely injured in February of this year, Manci also passed information to his Boko Haram fighter-colleagues that led to the successful ambushing and killing of Nigerian soldiers at Ngauri.

Battles raged in Khartoum ahead of talks in S.Arabia

07-05-2023

Air strikes battered Sudan's capital on Saturday (May 6), as fighting entered its 22nd day only hours before the warring parties are to meet in Saudi Arabia for their first direct talks.

Hundreds of people have been killed since the outbreak of the conflict on April 15 between Sudan's de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who leads the regular army, and his deputy turned rival Mohamed HamdanDaglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

In a joint statement, the United States and Saudi Arabia said the army and RSF would hold direct discussions in Jeddah on Saturday (May 6), describing them as "pre-negotiation talks".

"Saudi Arabia and the United States urge both parties to take in consideration the interests of the Sudanese nation and its people and actively engage in the talks toward a ceasefire and end to the conflict," they said.

The army confirmed it had sent envoys to Saudi Arabia to discuss "details of the truce in the process of being extended" with its paramilitary foes.

First person: Surviving abuse to help Eswatini’s neglected children

7 May 2023

Humanitarian Aid

“In this community, many children don’t go to school or pre-school, because they don’t have food. Many others can’t afford the school fees. I can’t afford to send my own children to pre-school because my husband lost his job.

Some children suffer from a lack of parental love. We have seen neglected children left to find their own food, and at risk of sexual abuse from adults, who could potentially infect them with HIV.

This also happened to me: although my parents did not neglect me when I was a child, I faced abuse from adults including neighbours, my teachers, and the pastor at my church.

Before we created this Neighbourhood Care Point, this building was full of criminals. It was used for storing stolen goods, and the walls were covered in violent graffiti images.

Nearly 10,000 flee from Sudan to neighbouring Central African Republic

By Daniel Bellamy

UN officials returning from a border town in Central African Republic say around 9,700 people have crossed over from Sudan so far and that they expect more to come.

"We are currently discussing with the minister who will decide on behalf of the government where this population will be settled," said Mohamed Ag Ayoya, the UN's top humanitarian official in the country.

Outbreaks of disease, in particular malaria are worrying the World Health Organisation (WHO). And malnutrition is a concern too, if people get weak from it they will be all the more prone to getting sick.
