Salman Rushdie: Did A ‘Chance’ Airport Meeting Between Two British Imams And An Iranian  Minister Lead To Fatwa?

Salman Rushdie

----

By Chloe Hadjimatheou

27-08-2022

The Satanic Verses author has faced death threats for more than 30 years, ever since Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa - a formal proclamation by an Islamic legal scholar - calling for him to be killed.

Before the February 1989 decree, publicly at least, Iran had largely ignored the controversial book - but then, just hours before the fatwa was issued, a meeting took place at Tehran's main airport between two British imams and an Iranian government minister.

Bad weather closed in on the Iranian capital as Kalim Siddiqui and Ghayasuddin Siddiqui arrived at Mehrabad Airport. Both men had been attending a conference in Tehran to mark a decade since the country's Islamic Revolution. They were now trying to get home to the UK.

Inside the airport, they bumped into an Iranian government minister - Mohammad Khatami - who asked to have a private word with Kalim.

When Kalim returned, he explained what they had spoken about. "He was asking my view about Salman Rushdie - and I told him, 'You know, something drastic has to happen,'" recounted Ghayasuddin.

Kalim told his travelling companion that the minister had been on his way to see Iran's then-Supreme Leader and top Shia Muslim religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

"I call on all valiant Muslims wherever they may be in the world to kill them without delay, so that no one will dare insult the sacred beliefs of Muslims henceforth," it read.

Sir Salman - who was knighted in 2007 - had published his controversial fourth novel in late 1988. The book's title refers to a disputed historical account in Islamic theology. The Prophet Muhammad is said to have been dictating two verses of the Koran, later abandoned because they were the result of deception by the devil.

Many Muslims argued Sir Salman's novel referenced Islamic theology and was a grave insult to their faith. They also objected, among other things, to characters depicting prostitutes being given the same names as wives of the Prophet.

For more than six months up until the fatwa, there had been protests across the world. The book had been banned in several countries including India - and demonstrations in Pakistan had left several people dead. In the UK, copies were burned in Bolton and Bradford.

But, until then, there had not been a huge public outcry from Iran's leaders. Had this airport meeting, later claimed by both Siddiquis to have been a chance encounter, secured the fatwa?

Kalim and Ghayasuddin were not related, they just happened to have the same last name. Like Sir Salman, both were born in British-ruled India - before the 1947 Partition - and had settled in the UK. For several years in the late 1980s, the imams had been trying to forge closer ties with Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic government.

Despite being a Sunni Muslim, Kalim admired what had happened in 1979 in Iran - a predominantly Shia Muslim country. He viewed the revolution as having freed Islam from Western domination by overthrowing the Western-backed Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

"I met a minister, a cabinet minister at the airport. In the VIP lounge, he asked me about the Satanic Verses and about Rushdie. And I told him what I knew about it, and he went back to the imam [Ayatollah Khomeini], I suppose, I presume, and the fatwa followed later that morning."

"You feel proud of it?" asked journalist Ludovic Kennedy in 1992, during an interview for BBC Radio 4's Beyond Belief series.

Bilal Mu’Min Abdullah, New Mexico Man Indicted For Allegedly Trying To Establish 'Islamic State Centre'

August 27, 2022

Herman Leyvoune Wilson, aka Bilal Mu’Min Abdullah, 45, of Albuquerque, allegedly attempted to set up an "Islamic State Center" in New Mexico. The center was designed to "teach ISIS ideology, provide training in tactical maneuvers and martial arts, and serve as a safe haven for individuals preparing to travel and fight on behalf of ISIS in the United States and abroad," according to the DOJ.

The DOJ also charged Wilson with attempting to obstruct, influence and impede an official proceeding for allegedly shutting down an online platform to destroy and conceal records. Wilson allegedly used the platform to promote ISIS ideology and recruit others to join ISIS and come to the center he allegedly attempted to establish in New Mexico.

Two Texas men, Kristopher Matthews and Jaylin Molina, who have pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide material support to ISIS, said Wilson radicalized them and "that without Wilson’s influence, they would never have committed the crimes."

If Wilson is convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for the charge of attempting to provide material support and 20 years for attempting to impede an official proceeding.

Gyanvapi Was Never A Mosque, Stands On Temple Ruins: Plaintiffs

Gyanvapi Mosque

----

Aug 25, 2022

VARANASI: Challenging the claim of the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid that Gyanvapi Mosque was a Waqf property, the lawyers of five women plaintiffs claimed that Gyanvapi was never a mosque and was standing on the ruins of a temple. Hearing on maintainability of the plea filed by five women plaintiffs seeking right to worship Shringar Gauri and other deities in Gyanvapi Mosque compound concluded at the court of district judge here on Wednesday. District judge Ajay Krishna Vishvesha has fixed September 12 as the date for delivering his verdict on the maintainability of the case.

Giving this information, district government counsel (civil) Mahendra Prasad Pandey told TOI that the arguments and counter-arguments by the plaintiffs and AIM on the issue of maintainability of the case came to an end at 3.15 pm on Wednesday.

Shamim Ahmed, senior lawyer of AIM - the Gyanvapi mosque management committee - started the final round of arguments at the district judge's court at 11.30.

A member of the AIM advocates' panel, Rayees Ahmed, said, "Today (Wednesday) we presented our submission on the issues of applicability of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 and contents of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Act, 1983."

"We explained that the KV Temple Act, 1983, contains only the name of Kashi Vishwanath Temple and not 'old or new' temple. Also, only the property endowed to KV Temple is mentioned in it and there is no reference to the mosque," he said.

Regarding applicability of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, Rayees Ahmed said, "We mentioned that in our previous arguments we had proved that the Gyanvapi mosque, which is also known as the Alamgir mosque, is a waqf property as per the decision in Deen Mohammad Vs secretary of state case 1936, high court order of 1945 and gazetting by the then district magistrate in 1944. We proved that on August 15, 1947 it was a mosque and a waqf property, hence the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991 applies to it."

After AIM concluded its submissions, veteran Supreme Court advocate Hari Shankar Jain, who is contesting the case on behalf of four women plaintiffs - Laxmi Devi, Sita Sahu, Manju Vyas and Rekha Pathak - started the counter- arguments. "We mentioned that the AIM's claim that Gyanvapi and Alamgir mosques are the same is a fraud and a bid to mislead the court. Alamgir mosque is separate and exists at Madhav Bindu, Panchganga Ghat. Gyanvapi has never been a mosque," he told TOI.

Jain said, "We submitted in the court that even after the demolition of the temple by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the Hindus continued worshipping at Shringar Gauri and other deities in the ruins of Gyanvapi. In fact, Hindus had been worshipping there on August 15, 1947, and continued the practice till Gyanvapi was isolated with steel barricading in the name of security by the Mulayam Singh Yadav government in 1993. Thus, Gyanvapi is not barred under sections of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991."

Maan Bahadur Singh, advocate of plaintiff number one, Rakhi Singh, said: "I informed the court that any property is dedicated for waqf by its owner with pious purpose and Aurangzeb was not the owner of the property. Gyanvapi is a disputed structure as it stands over a temple's ruins. Hence, it is not barred under the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991."

As per the directive of the Supreme Court to decide the maintainability of the case No 692/2021 Rakhi Singh vs state of UP and others on priority, district judge Ajay Krishna Vishvesha had started hearing the matter from May 20.

When French interior minister dined with anti-Semitic imam he now wants to expel

BY LOU SYRAH

AUGUST 27, 2022

In a legal battle that began in July, France’s Council of State is to rule early next week on the legality of interior minister Gérald Darmanin’s order for the expulsion to Morocco of imam Hassan Iquioussen, accused of promoting anti-Semitism and opposition to gender equality, and acting as an apologist for terrorism. Mediapart can reveal that the high-profile, hardline interior minister in fact once enjoyed cordial relations with the imam when he sought to woo Muslim voters while campaigning for election as mayor of the town of Tourcoing, and when Iquioussen’s anti-Semitic diatribes were already known. Lou Syrah reports.

Taiwan: Two US Navy warships transit through strait amid tensions

28.08.2022

Two United States Navy warships are sailing through the Taiwan Strait, in the first such transit since China carried out the largest-ever military drills around Taiwan, following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the self-ruled island earlier this month.

The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers — the USS Antietam and the USS Chancellorsville — conducted the "routine" transit on Sunday "through waters where high seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law,"  the US 7th Fleet said in a statement on Sunday.

"These (U.S.) ships transited through a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state," the US Navy said.

An infuriated China reacted to the visit by staging days of air and sea drills around the island that it claims as part of its territory.

The US Navy further said in its statement that the transit "demonstrates the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific."

The US  has no official diplomatic relations with Taiwan but maintains extensive informal ties through the unofficial American Institute in Taiwan.

Washington also supports the island's right to decide its future and provides considerable political and military support to Taipei.

The US and Western allies have stepped up  "freedom of navigation" crossings by naval vessels of both the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea to reinforce the idea that those seas are international waterways, irking Beijing.

Cricket Between India And Pakistan All About Religious Expression, Jingoism, Patriotism, And A Dash Of Empathy

Jitendra Nath Misra

28 Aug 2022

Does history vitiate sport between India and Pakistan? Perhaps not. The pendulum swings as the political mood alternates. It begins with economics. If politics is power, economic indicators are its sinews. Having slipped to one-ninth the size of the Indian economy, Pakistan demurs in asserting itself. Indeed, for now, sport might even have become a wildcard in Pakistan's survival diplomacy.

Cricinfo calls the amiable build-up for the Asia Cup game on August 28 "bromance." Virender Sehwag talks about "love" between players. Why not? Aren't athletes mascots for the good, not just the bad? Rewind into history. In gentler times, Pakistan allowed in thousands of Indian fans to watch the 1954-1955 Test series. The Tribune newspaper, as quoted in The Spectator, reported "sentimental embraces," and "tears" in Lahore. "If every cricket match between India and Pakistan can be played without a ring of machine guns to keep the onlookers from rioting, then I feel the prestige attaching to the game is great," the English cricketer Wally Hammond told The Spectator.
