LUCKNOW: Muslim clerics have appealed to the Muslims to refrain from cow slaughter on the occasion of Eid as a mark of respect for the religious feelings of Hindus.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board vice-president and Shia cleric Maulana Syed Kalbe Sadiq, in a statement Sadiq, said "It is my appeal to Muslims to completely restrain from sacrificing the cow on the Eid-ul-Azha. India is our country and we should respect the feeling of Hindu brethren who are in the majority."
Maulana Sadiq, who is known for promoting modern and scientific education among Muslims, said, "A fatwa was issued for Shia Muslims after Independence in which sacrificing cow was prohibited in the country."
Nayab Mohatamim (pro vice-chancellor) of Islamic Seminary Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi said that the institution was also in favour of Muslims avoiding cow slaughter. He said in some states there is a ban on cow slaughter but Muslims should avoid sacrificing the animal even at places where it has not been prohibited. This, he said, has been published by Dar-ul-Uloom in the book related to issues pertaining to sacrifice. He said that while literate class try to follow the advice of the Islamic institutions on the issue of sacrificing cow, greater awareness was lacking in the illiterate class.

Muslims of Bihar's Purnia district help Hindus celebrate Durga Puja

In the spirit of brotherhood, Muslims in a village in Bihar's Purnia district joined hands with Hindus to celebrate the Durga Puja.
Only four Hindu families live in Saguuniya, a Muslim-dominated village about 400 km from here. But they celebrate Durga Puja with fanfare, thanks to the support of Muslims.
"We are lucky that Durga Puja is celebrated in our village by Muslims. This is unheard of anywhere else," said Nitai Gopal Chandra Roy, a Bengali Hindu villager.
"Without Muslim support, we can't think of celebrating the festival in such a big way," he said.
Another Bengali Hindu in the village, Dhanajay Roy, echoed him.
"It is a beautiful experience. Muslims not only help us prepare for the festival but also join us to offer Prasad and other rituals," he said.
The Muslims helped Hindus decorate the Puja pandal.
Mohammad Rizwan, one of the dozens of Muslims who helped Hindus celebrate the festival, said he and other Muslims were only continuing an age-old tradition.
"It is a matter of tolerance preached by Islam that one should help the other," Rizwan said.
Shaukat Alam, another Muslim, said dozens of Muslim youths helped clean up the village and streets for the festival. "It is a classical case of communal harmony," he said.
Durga Puja was started in the village by the Roy family of Saguniya estate some 500 years ago. With time, most of the Hindu families migrated.

RSS seeks early legislation to allow Ram temple in Ayodhya

Nagpur : Opposing construction of any structure for the minority community at the disputed site in Ayodhya, RSS today asked the Centre to bring in a legislation at the earliest allowing Ram Janmabhoomi Trust to construct a Ram temple there.
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, while addressing an annual gathering of Vijayadashmi celebrations here today, said any construction for the sake of the minority community should be allowed only outside the "cultural boundaries of Ayodhya".
Quoting reports, Bhagwat said, "Attempts are on to acquire a large plot of land adjacent to the Ram Janambhoomi to construct a big structure for Muslims."
"The state government will acquire the piece of land and the union government will be funding the construction," he said.
"The construction of Ram Janmabhoomi temple is an issue pending before the court. Therefore, making such irresponsible proposal at this juncture will amount to playing with the sentiments of the crores of Hindus and will result in vitiating the atmosphere of amity," Bhagwat said.
Considering the judgement delivered by the Allahabad High Court on Sept 30, 2010, the Parliament should enact a legislation, he said adding, "This is the only way to solve the issue amicably."
On the Kashmir issue, Bhagwat said the area under the occupation of Pakistan should be liberated.
"Discrimination shown in the administrative and development matters in Jammu, Leh, Ladakh and Kashmir Valley must be stopped forthwith and these areas must be brought at par with other regions in the country," he said.
Conditions should be made favourable and secure for those Hindus, who were forced to flee their homes, so that they come back to the valley with honour, he said.
"Those who took shelter in Jammu and Kashmir at the time of partition, should be granted state citizenship, but the policies adopted are further complicating the situation," the RSS chief said.
"The power-crazy political parties ruling the states and Centre continue to ignore national interests and are succumbing to pressures of foreign forces.
"It appears from the prevalent situation in the eastern part of the nation that we have not learnt any lessons from our grim situation in the northern parts caused by the progressive depletion of nationalist Hindu population due to historical processes," he added.
The infiltrators should be identified and their names should be deleted from the voters' list and ration cards.
A national register should be maintained as per the court guidelines to record details like the place of birth, of the citizens, he added.
"If all the Hindus are forced to flee their land because of persecution, they will have no place to live. Therefore no Hindu, from wherever he comes here, should be considered a foreigner," he said.

TWENTY- three years after the kidnappings of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of former Union home minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, and Nahida Soz, daughter of former Union minister Saifuddin Soz, Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has said these kidnappings have no justification.
“Their kidnappings cannot be justified on moral or any other ground,” Geelani wrote in the recently released autobiography Wullar Kinary (along Wullar lake).
He said Mufti, Saifuddin and their parties had played a part in denying the right to selfdetermination to Kashmiris.

Fasih met IM boss at a perfume shop

Recently arrested alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) 'treasurer' Fasih Mahmood met the home-grown terror outfit's boss at a perfume shop 12 years ago before introducing him to his uncle who would later help forge its 'Darbhanga Module', interrogation of the alleged terror suspect has revealed.
The module, which went into operation soon after the Batla House encounter of 2008, has allegedly executed almost every terror strike perpetrated across the country since then.

SUSPECTED Indian Mujahideen ( IM) operative Fasih Mahmood might have been handed over to India by Saudi Arabia, but the intelligence agencies lost the chance to nab a top Lashkar- e- Tayyeba ( LeT) member who is working closely with the IM cadres.
Despite credible intelligence that Fayaz Qagzi was coordinating IM operations from Saudi Arabia, India could not pursue his case.
It seems the goof- up in Fasih’s case, which led to a delay of five months in his deportation, demoralised the counter- terror agencies.

Fasih Mehmood, the suspected co-founder of Indian Mujahideen who was arrested by the Delhi Police Monday, is believed to have told his interrogators that he was drawn to the terror group by the aggressive ideas of another alleged co-founder and key operative, Yasin Bhatkal.
Police sources claimed that Mehmood had also admitted that Bhatkal had accompanied him to his house in Darbhanga in Bihar in 2003 and stayed there for two weeks. During this visit, Bhatkal allegedly met some friends of Mehmood who went on to join IM, the sources claimed, adding that investigators now hope to find out more about this so-called Bihar module.

'Kashmir issue can be resolved in a political atmosphere': J&K CM

Chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday stressed on addressing political issues of Jammu and Kashmir in a political and peaceful atmosphere to usher the State into permanent tranquillity. He said that Indo-Pak relations have a direct bearing on Jammu and Kashmir adding that the thaw in their relations affects peace and development in the State and any tension between the two creates difficulties in Srinagar.
A government spokesman said that the CM was addressing a large public gathering at Diskit, one of the remotest corners in Leh district of Ladakh.

Delhi blasts accused got his driving license from Hathras

Delhi and Bengluru blasts accused Indian Mujahideen member Fasiah Mohammad got his driving license from the road transport office of district Hathras in Western UP by submitting fake address proof and other supporting documents. Fasih was arrested in Saudi Arab in the month of May this
year and has been deported to India few days ago. During interrogation he revealed to the Saudi officials that his men in India were in process of getting his identity documents from different government offices of Western UP in India. Saudi officials passed this information to their Indian counterparts who subsequently alerted the road transport authorities of district Hathras and Ghaziabad.

Yusuf, from Myanmar, circulated provocative messages before riot: Cops

Yusuf Khan, an illegal immigrant from Myanmar who was arrested on Saturday, has been identified as the source of provocative messages that were in circulation around a week before the August 11 Azad Maidan riots.
“For three or four months leading up to the riots, Yusuf was regularly in touch with a maulana in Baramulla district, a religious leader in Myanmar, and another person in Bangladesh. These people told him about local events and gave instructions to him. Yusuf, in turn, sent out provocative messages to people,” said a Crime Branch source.
The Crime Branch is verifying Yusuf’s claims and ascertaining the identities of the three persons he was in touch with.

Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan enjoy freedom: Pakistan Sikh Council

AMRITSAR: Pakistan Sikh Council has rubbished claims of persecution made by some Pakistani Hindus and Sikhs who recently arrived in India.
Chairman of the council Ramesh Singh, who is currently in India, said on Tuesday that Hindus and Sikhs enjoyed full religious and political freedom in Pakistan, and "those who make such remarks either have vested interests of settling in India with their relatives or are bank defaulters who were wanting to flee Pakistan fearing action".
In the recent past, a large number of Pakistani Hindus had crossed border to India to settle down here. They had claimed that their men were being abducted for ransom and their daughters forcibly converted to Islam. However, Ramesh Singh said there were only three instances where girls had willingly embraced the religion.

Bugti Tribes Paid Rs89m during Balochistan Offensive

ISLAMABAD: Pro-government Bugti tribesmen were paid Rs89 million from Baitulmaal funds when former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf launched a military offensive against Nawab Akbar Bugti, an audit report revealed on Tuesday.
The expenses were incurred from 2003 to 2006 and camouflaged under the administrative budget of the Baitulmaal – a welfare organisation that provides assistance to the needy, according to the audit report presented at a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting.
Despite raising objections over the use of taxpayer money and that too out of the Baitulmaal budget, the PAC condoned the expenses and settled the audit objection.

Three more schools bombed in Mohmand Agency, Swabi

MOHMAND AGENCY: Militants on Wednesday night blew up two more schools in Mohmand Agency, increasing the number of schools destroyed in the agency to 108, while another school was bombed in Swabi district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province.
Officials told Dawn.com that Government Primary School Malik Aurangzeb and Government Primary School Dilawar in Haleemzai Tehsil of Mohmand Agency had been destroyed last night.
According to officials, 108 schools have so far been destroyed in the agency in such incidents.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, militants blew up Government Middle School Wasilabad in Swabi’s Tehsil Lahore, destroying a room and the boundary wall of the school.

Supreme Court seeks report on Hindu graveyards

LAHORE: A Supreme Court (SC) division bench on Wednesday again sought a report about the status of Hindu graveyards in all the four provinces.
On August 13, the bench had sought reports from chief secretaries of all the provinces about graveyards of Hindu community but no such report was filed.
The bench, consisting of Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, also disposed of the matter of encroachments at Hindu Balmaki’s graveyard on GT Road.
An additional advocate general told the court that encroachments had been removed and recovered land had been handed over to graveyard’s caretakers.

Drone attack kills 2 in North Waziristan

A US drone strike killed at least two people in the Miranshah area of North Waziristan on Wednesday, Express News reported.
The attack follows an October 11 attack in Orakzai agency, where at least 17 suspected militants were killed and more than 20 were injured when a US drone fired missiles at a compound in the Bulandkhel area.

Missing person cases: ministries directed to submit sworn affidavits

PESHAWAR, Oct 23: The Peshawar High Court on Tuesday directed the defence and interior ministries to submit replies with sworn affidavits of senior officials in several habeas corpus petitions challenging alleged illegal detentions of the scores of people by law-enforcement and intelligence agencies.
A bench comprising acting Chief Justice Miftauddin Kahn and Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth directed the representatives of the federal and provincial governments to make efforts for tracing the said missing persons.

Karachi police operating at the behest of politicians: Justice Jamali

KARACHI: During Wednesday’s hearing of the Karachi law and order case, Justice Anwer Zaheer Jamali said the police was operating at the behest of politicians, adding that, officials were more loyal to political parties than to their own institution, DawnNews reported.
A five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Jamali, heard the case.
During the hearing, the bench ordered that the government should abolish the formation of groups on the basis of language.
Responding to which, Advocate-General Sindh Abdul Fateh Malik said it was not possible to form new groupings in the city.

‘Pakistan can never approve drone attacks from its soil’

ISLAMABAD: Terming a statement on drones being referred to Federal Secretary Defence as totally false, a spokesman of the Defence Ministry on Tuesday said that Pakistan has always been against drone attacks and will not support any such activity.
“The Government of Pakistan never showed any consent for holding such activity,” the spokesman said through a clarification. “The defence secretary is being misquoted in the media. Government of Pakistan can never accord an approval for drone operations from its territory,” he said further. Pakistan has been lodging protests with the United States against the drone strikes. “We consider it a clear violation of International law and Pakistan’s sovereignty. Pakistan has very recently demanded the end of drone strikes during US Envoy’s visit to Pakistan. Conjectures should not be projected in the media but facts, stresses the ministry,” the spokesman concluded.

PHC issues notice to Musharraf for allowing drone campaign

PESHAWAR: While hearing a petition filed against drone attacks, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday issued a notice to former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf for allowing campaign of drone strikes in Pakistan.
The CIA-operated drone campaign began in the former president’s government.
The drone attacks in northwest Pakistan, where militants linked to Taliban and al Qaeda have strongholds, have killed thousands of people since they began in June 2004, according to the report by experts from Stanford Law School and the New York University School of Law.

North Waziristan: Deputy speaker prefers dialogue over operation

Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi on Tuesday said that a military operation in North Waziristan was not the solution, and that the conflict needed to be solved via negotiations, BBC Urdu reported.
The operation will only be carried out after a consensus between the army and civilian leadership and the final decision will be taken by the government, Kundi told BBC Urdu during an interview at the Parliament House in Islamabad.

Pak rejects Shinde's charge on infiltration

Islamabad on Tuesday rejected Indian Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s allegation that terrorists were being pushed into India by Pakistan and cautioned that such statements could vitiate the atmosphere between the two countries.
In a short statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said these ``allegations and insinuations’’ were totally baseless and unfounded. “Such unsubstantiated statements are not very helpful in creating a conducive environment necessary for improving the relationship between our two countries.’’

Man disguised as woman detained trying to enter Mecca for hajj

Saudi authorities have foiled the attempt of one undocumented pilgrim to smuggle himself into Mecca to perform the annual Muslim ritual of hajj, a local newspaper reported, quoting a passport control authority source.
The man was dressed in women’s clothing in an attempt to deceive passport control officers, Brigadier Aed al-Harbi, of hajj authority, told the Okaz daily on Monday.
Harbi said 73 persons have been arrested for transporting Saudi citizens and foreign expatriates trying to enter Mecca without pilgrimage permits.

Syria accuses France of encouraging ‘terrorism’

BEIRUT — Damascus accused France on Tuesday of hindering efforts to stop the violence and of supporting “terrorists” in strife-torn Syria, referring to the rebels fighting against loyalist troops.
“Syria calls on the international community, and in particular the UN Security Council, to seriously question the role of France, which is preventing the cessation of violence and terrorism in Syria,” state news agency SANA quoted the foreign ministry as saying.
“The previous and current French governments continue to defy universal rights in a flagrant manner... by supporting armed terrorist groups in Syria.”

Syrian government forces killed at least 20 people on Tuesday when they shelled a bakery in a neighbourhood under rebel control in the contested northern city of Aleppo, opposition activists said.

An air strike on a village in the northwest Syrian province of Idlib killed five members of the same family on Wednesday, including a woman and a child, a monitoring group said.
The army also renewed efforts to retake rebel-held areas east of Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
"The army's air strike on Maaret Shamirin is part of the regime's attempt to bring the area of Maaret al-Numan under control," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman, whose group reported the five deaths in the village.

Syrian govt 'agrees to Eid ceasefire'

The UN's envoy to Syria says President Bashar al-Assad's government has agreed to abide by a ceasefire during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.
Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in Cairo that most opposition factions had also said they would observe any ceasefire.
The government said it would make its final decision on Thursday.
Brahimi said he hoped to use the lull in fighting over Eid al-Adha, which starts on Friday, to "discuss a longer and more effective ceasefire".
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of the Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as proof of obedience to God.

TV host gets jail for insulting Mursi

CAIRO — An Egyptian talk-show host faces a four-month jail term after a court convicted him of insulting President Mohammed Mursi, state media reported on Monday.
Tawfiq Okasha, whose show appears on his own channel, can appeal the sentence after paying 100 Egyptian pounds ($16.39) bail, a source in the court in southern Egypt said. “Mursi is the President of all Egyptians and insulting him is like insulting the whole nation,” Nasr El Din Mahmoud Maghazy, who filed the case against Okasha, told.

However, the ruling has also theoritically given assembly members more time to work out their differences over the contents of constitutional articles before the draft charter is put before popular referendum.

“He’s insane,” say the villagers who have come to gawk at him. “He doesn’t know whether he’s in this world or another.”
“He’s getting better!” said Mia Shafiq, the man responsible for his recovery and the one who shackled him to the wall of a shrine in this eastern Afghan city.

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday condemned a NATO operation that he said killed four children in the country’s east, a claim the coalition said was possible.
The operation took place in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province on Saturday, a statement released by Karzai’s office said, adding: “It resulted in the killing of four innocent children” who were tending to livestock.
Civilian casualties have been a major source of friction between Karzai’s government and the US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Sheikh Hamad also denounced Israel's policies and praised people of the Gaza Strip for standing up to it with "bare chests" during a one-day visit to the coastal enclave ruled by Hamas.
The visit was the first by a head of state since Gaza fell under an Israeli blockade after Hamas took control of the territory in 2007.

American-Islamic Relations Asks NY City Council to Stop NYPD 'Baiting' of Muslims

(New York, NY, 10/23/12) -- The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today called on the New York City Council to pass legislation that would increase oversight of the NYPD and cut the department's unconstitutional spying program, including the aggressive "baiting" of Muslims by NYPD informants.
CAIR-NY said the "baiting" practice was revealed today in an Associated Press report on the still-evolving New York Police Department (NYPD) Muslim spying scandal. Today's article detailed the story of Shamiur Rahman, a 19-year-old American of Bengali descent who was recruited by the FBI as an informant after his third arrest on minor drug charges.
Rahman said his NYPD handlers instructed him to join groups of Muslims at mosques or religious study groups and start conversations about terrorism, recording the conversations for the NYPD. He also gave the NYPD photos, names, cell phone numbers, and license plate numbers of Muslims who welcomed him to their events.
CAIR-NY has been working with the Muslim American Civil Liberties Coalition (MACLC) and Communities United for Police Reform (CPR) to urge the New York City Council to pass the Community Safety Act, a package of four bills (Intro. 799, 800, 801, & 881) that would strengthen protections from predatory policing for New Yorkers and institute an independent inspector general to oversee the NYPD.
The Community Safety Act has received support from the majority of New York City Council members.
"Police 'baiting' of communities they are sworn to protect doesn't align with our Constitution," said CAIR-NY Advocacy Director Cyrus McGoldrick. "These ineffective and unconstitutional policies are damaging to the communities they target and to the entire city."
Earlier this year, CAIR-NY testified before the New York City Council at a hearing for the Community Safety Act, and participated in the Communities for Police Reform Advocacy Day at City Hall.

The U.S. citizen of Bengali descent says he lived a double life, snapping pictures inside mosques and collecting the names of innocent people attending Islamic study groups.
Shamiur Rahman, 19, tells The Associated Press that he regrets his work, which paid up to $1,000 a month. He says he spied on student groups and mosques. He showed the AP weeks of text messages and photographs with his NYPD contacts.

'US told of militant claim 2 hrs after Libya attack'

Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show.
The emails, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with US spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mention that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks.
The brief emails also show how US diplomats described the attack, even as it was still under way, to Washington.

Samir Suljovic, a 26-year-old who was born and raised in Queens, NY, boarded a flight to the United States from Munich Germany today at noon. Upon his arrival in Philadelphia, Suljovic reports that he was interrogated by government officials for an hour and a half and consequently missed his connecting flight to New York. He will now take a train for the final stretch of his journey.

ADDIS ABABA: Four people, including one police officer, were killed in Ethiopia Sunday as protesters attacked a police station where Muslim demonstrators were being held, an official said Tuesday.
