Furthering The Spirit Of Collective Well-Being For The Good Of Humankind
Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PTI file photo)

by Manjiri Sachin Chitre
Jul 10, 2022 1
As India celebrates Eid-ul-Adha, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his greetings, stressing that the festival
“inspires to work towards furthering the spirit of collective well-being” as
well as towards the “prosperity for the good of humankind”. “Eid Mubarak!
Greetings on Eid-ul-Adha. May this festival inspire us to work towards
furthering the spirit of collective well-being and prosperity for the good of
humankind,” PM Modi tweeted.
President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday also greeted
citizens on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha. Highlighting the festival “inspires to
follow the path of self-sacrifice shown by Hazrat Ibrahim,” the president had
asked everyone to “rededicate themselves to the service of mankind and work for
the prosperity and development of the nation.”
"This festival inspires us to follow the path of
self-sacrifice shown by Hazrat Ibrahim. On this occasion, let us resolve to
rededicate ourselves to the service of mankind and work for the prosperity and
development of the nation. On the occasion of Eid-uz-Zuha, I extend my
greetings to all the fellow citizens, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters,"
he said.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh, who turns 71 today,
wished “happiness and prosperity all across”. Taking to Twitter, he wrote,
“Greetings on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. Hope this day brings happiness and
prosperity all across. May everybody be healthy and live in harmony. Eid
Mubarak!”
Meanwhile, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal wished
health, happiness and progress to the citizens. “Happy Eid-ul-Azha to all the
countrymen. May you all be healthy, happy and may this festival bring a lot of progress
in your life,” he wrote on Twitter.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote: “Eid Mubarak! May
the auspicious occasion of #EidAlAdha usher in the spirit of togetherness and
bring peace, prosperity and happiness for all.”
NCP supremo Sharad Pawar tweeted to mark the festival.
“May the love and brotherhood of each other be enhanced on the occasion of Eid,
which is a reminder of sacrifice and dedication. Happy Eid to all Muslim
brothers and sisters!,” he wrote in Marathi.
Union minister Smriti Irani wrote: “Greetings on the
occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. May this day encourage the spirit of compassion in
society.”
Eid ul-Adha - also known as Bakra Eid, Bakrid, Eid
al-Adha, Eid Qurban, or Qurban Bayaram - is celebrated by Muslims all across
the world to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s dedication to Allah. It is
celebrated in the month of Zul Hijjah/Dhu al-Hijjah - which is the twelfth
month of the Islamic or lunar calendar. This is the second major Islamic
festival celebrated by Muslims after Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of 30
days of fasting in the month of Ramadan.

Tens Of Thousands Gather In Manchester Park To
Celebrate Eid Al-Adha
Thousands of people from
across Greater Manchester came together to celebrate Eid al Adha at Platt
Fields park (Image: Kenny Brown | Manchester Evening News)
----
By Ramazani Mwamba
9 JUL 2022
Around 25,000 people gathered at a sun-soaked
Manchester park today to celebrate Eid Al-Adha. Crowds of Muslim Mancs
descended on Platt Fields in Fallowfield this morning for Eid prayer.
Locals celebrated the first major festival on the
Islamic calendar, Eid al-Fitr, back in April which marked the end of the holy
month of Ramadan. Eid al-Adha is also known as Festival of the Sacrifice or the
Greater Eid and is held to honour the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to
sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah's command.
For many today’s Eid at the Park was a regular
occurrence, with many of them coming earlier in the year. However, for Usman
and Ramla this was their first time taking part in Eid at the park.
Her husband, Usman added: “We got married two years
ago and with the pandemic this was the first time she’s been here. It’s nice,
it’s beautiful to see so many people out here, this is what today is about,
it’s about forgiveness, family and charity."
Another worshipper said: “On days like this I love
being a Muslim, everybody is hear, the poor and rich standing next to each for
one thing, Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God)."
The park was a kaleidoscope of colours as thousands
put on their best garments and made their way for prayer which started just
after 10am. You could hear a pin drop while the prayer was conducted at the
park with thousands in full focus and unison in the prayer lead by Imam Sheikh
Mohamed Ali Mowleed.
As is custom, hearty hugs and hand shakes were
exchanged once the prayer finished. The Imam could be heard over the sound
system emphasising the importance of charity during the cost of living crisis
and for people to extend their generosity to not only fellow Muslims, but also
non-Muslims in their wider community.
Muhammed Abu Bakar, who was joined by his three sons,
said: “This is one of our biggest celebrations and I always look forward to it.
Today sends a message of unity. People coming together in peace and harmony,
it’s a day of forgiveness – it’s amazing.”

Bidens Wish Muslims Celebrating Eid Al-Adha ‘A Joyous
Holiday’
US President Joe Biden (AFP)
------
By Caroline Vakil
07/09/22
President Biden said on Saturday that he and first
lady Jill Biden wished “a joyous holiday” to Muslims in the United States and
around the world who are observing the holiday of Eid al-Adha.
“Jill and I send our warmest greetings to Muslims
across the United States and around the world celebrating Eid al-Adha. The Eid
traditions and Hajj rituals that commemorate the devotion of Abraham and his
son to God are an opportunity for Muslims to renew their faith, and a reminder
of the common roots of the world’s great Abrahamic religions,” Biden said in a
statement.
“And the act of sharing the sacrifice with those less
fortunate in service of God mirrors our common commitment to work together to
meet the challenges of our world today.”
Biden also touted the progress that the U.S. and the
rest of the world has made in battling the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that
Muslims would be able to make the hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, for the first
time since the start of the pandemic.
“It’s a symbol of the progress we have made in
fighting this pandemic and of all work we must still do to strengthen our
recovery,” the president said.
Eid al-Adha, known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” honors
a story told in the Quran of how Ibrahim demonstrates his obedience to God by
his willingness to kill his son, Ismail. In the story, God ultimately stops
Ibrahim from killing his son by offering him a ram to use instead.
The holiday features slaughtering livestock, meat from
which is then shared amongst the poor, friends and family. It also features the
hajj trek to the holy city of Mecca, which takes place each year and which
Muslims are supposed to complete at least one time.

Afghan Leaders Call for National Dialogue to Resolve
The Existing Challenges In The Country
Former President Hamid
Karzai
----
By TOLO news
09-07-2022
Afghan leaders including former President Hamid Karzai
and former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah
Abdullah, stressed the need for national dialogue to resolve the existing
challenges in the country.
Former president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, expressing
concern over the current situation of the country, said that the Islamic world
should make the Islamic Emirate aware of their actions.
"I ask the Islamic world to consider the
Taliban's move. The Islamic world is on a very positive route, and it is
obviously vital for them to make the Taliban know that the principles of Islam
and the welfare of Muslims throughout the world are going in which
direction," he stated.
Ghani, in a message on the occasion of Eid, said he
considers girls' education a necessity and he emphasized that world examples
show that one girl's education can change five generations.
“World examples show that the education of a girl can
change five generations, and the education of a boy can change only one
generation. In a family where a man and a woman are educated, that is the best
Muslim family,” he said.
Ghani added: "The goal should be the well-being
and peace of all the people, not a system of a few specific figures. A system
can only continue with the will of the Afghan nation, otherwise it will face
threats."
"History has now proven that Ghani would not have
fled if he had considered the people. A way of peace could have been found,
though. I hope you would consider the welfare of the people and avoid taking
nine million dollars out of Afghanistan,” said Tariq Farhadi, political
analyst.
"In the messages of political leaders, two
important and fundamental issues stand out, the will of the people and their
basic wishes, demands and needs. Therefore, the government cannot ignore the
will of the people,” said Sayed Javad Sajadi, university lecturer.
Meanwhile, former president Hamid Karzai, on the
occasion of Eid, in a message on Twitter asked the Islamic Emirate to soon
reopen girls' schools above the sixth grade.
Karzai in his Eid message emphasized that the national
discourse should start as soon as possible and is the only way to resolve the
country's problems.
"It is crucial and important to ensure social
justice, collaboration, the right to education, and the basic rights of the
people in order to resolve the current problems. I emphasize the need for
respect of cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity ... in order to move
towards a bright future and to strengthen national unity. I hope the officials
pay attention to these principles,” Abdullah posted on Facebook.

Architectural History Exposes The False Claims About
Goa’s Mosques And Temples
Amita Kanekar
10-07-2022
In Goa, one is used to history lessons from the most
unlikely of sources but that honour is now being extended to architecture as
well. The latest wisdom is that the old Safa Masjid in Central Goa’s Ponda
cannot have originally been a mosque. The reason offered by self-proclaimed
experts is that talis, or water tanks, of the sort visible at Safa Masjid were
built only at Hindu temples.
Mosques originated in Arab lands and Arab lands “had
no water”, so there is no question of mosques having water tanks, they contend.
Only Hindu temples had tanks, which means that that the Safa Masjid was
originally a Hindu temple.

Why many Varanasi residents are unimpressed by the
furore around the Gyanvapi mosque
10-07-2022
Vijay Tiwari is still distressed about it. In March
2020, the Varanasi administration demolished the small shop where he sold
rudraksh strings and idols, as well as the shrine behind it. The shivling and
Narayan idol it had housed were displaced.
The shrine and the shop, which Tiwari’s family had
rented for three generations, were knocked down to make way for the ambitious
Kashi Vishwanath Corridor – the wide avenue that cuts through the heart of old
Varanasi, connecting the Kashi Vishwanath temple to the ghats on the Ganges.

What it’s like to grow up gay, Muslim and afraid
TUFAYEL AHMED
10 Jul 2022
I recently read an early review of my debut novel,
This Way Out, on Amazon that really cemented why I wrote this book. The person,
a gay – presumably white – man from Canada felt that it was “just another
coming-out whine”, that my story wasn’t needed, that it had been done to death.
“The new normal is gay,” they wrote.
It’s exactly this kind of misguided thinking that
compelled me to write my protagonist Amar’s story. While it’s true that there
may be greater acceptance and tolerance of LGBTQ+ people across the world than
ever before, that doesn’t mean that we are all equal. Often it’s the people in
the majority of minoritised groups – in this case, white gay men – who think
that, because they feel equal, the same must be true for the rest of us. That
just isn’t the case. Especially for queer people whose identities intersect
more than one minority group.

Soaring prices dampen joy of Muslim Eid al-Adha
festival
JULY 09, 2022
CAIRO — As hundreds of thousands of Muslim pilgrims
continued the annual Hajj pilgrimage rites in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, fellow
Muslims in most parts of the world began celebrating the Eid al-Adha festival
overshadowed by soaring food prices. During Eid al-Adha, Islam's major feast,
Muslims honor the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his
son to prove his faith to God. Sheep are commonly chosen as the sacrificial
animal for the festival's ritual slaughter. But other livestock, like cows and
goats, may also be slaughtered for sacrifice. Part of the sacrificial meat is
given to the poor. In the lead-up to the four-day festival this year,
complaints surfaced in several Arab countries about increases in livestock
prices. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was blamed for causing the hike in prices.
Saudi Arabia, Islam’s birthplace and the world’s top oil exporter, is one such
country. Earlier this week, Saudi King Salman ordered 20 billion riyals ($5.3
billion) in financial support to tackle repercussions of global price
increases, media in the Gulf monarchy reported. A portion of the aid is
earmarked for helping Saudis living on limited incomes and supporting cattle
breeders. Get unlimited digital access Subscribe now for just $2 for 2 months. CLAIM
OFFER The rest will be pumped into augmenting the kingdom’s stocks of essential
goods. In Lebanon, roiled by economic woes, many people complain about not
having money for a sacrificial animal. A sheep there costs around $250. In
mostly Muslim Egypt, livestock prices have increased by up to 30%, according to
the privately owned newspaper al-Youm al-Saba.

Pakistan
PML-N Foregoes Ministers To Ensure Hold Over Lahore
‘Citadel’
Zulqernain Tahir
July 10, 2022
LAHORE: The departure of a minister each from the
federal and Punjab cabinets, and the official reasons cited for it, makes it
clear that the PML-N cannot afford any embarrassment in the upcoming by-polls
in Punjab and wants to retain its hold over its citadel of Lahore, for which it
has deployed its trusted lieutenants.
Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Sardar Ayaz
Sadiq and Punjab Minister Salman Rafique resigned on Saturday citing ‘personal
reasons’. Although Mr Sadiq’s resignation as the economic affairs minister may
not be significant in the larger scheme of things, it does raise a question
that the PML-N could sacrifice the head of such a vital ministry at a time when
the economy is on a downward spiral, but not lose Lahore at any cost,
especially when former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman
Imran Khan is making whirlwind tours to every constituency to give a tough time
to the ruling alliance in Punjab.
