Over 12,000 Muslims’ 'Tiranga Samvidhan Rally in Mumbai, 'To Seek Action Against Hate Speeches of Ramgiri Maharaj and BJP MLA'

Massive Rally, Blocked at Mumbai's Mulund Check Naka
-----
Sep 24, 2024,
CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGR/MUMBAI: A large number of Muslim community members led by former MP Imtiaz Jaleel of AIMIM and other political and social groups, who had left Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in hundreds of vehicles on Monday afternoon, reached Mulund toll plaza late evening in an attempt to enter Mumbai to seek action against BJP MLA Nitesh Rane and preacher Ramgiri Maharaj over separate hate speech cases registered against them. The over 12,000-strong crowd, however, left from the Mulund toll naka after handing their representation to the divisional collector and other representatives at the spot late Monday night.
The protest march, called 'Tiranga Samvidhan Rally', started in Sambhajinagar. Hundreds of vehicles from different parts of Marathwada reached Sambhajinagar and started towards Mumbai via Samruddhi Super Expressway, disrupting traffic along the way. Police said this was for the first time the Samruddhi expressway witnessed a jam due to vehicles participating in a protest rally.
Jaleel was calling for the arrest of Ramgiri Maharaj and Nitesh Rane, accusing them of making inflammatory remarks. He planned to deliver copies of the Constitution to members of the ruling Mahayuti and senior police officials. However, Mumbai police stated Jaleel had not been granted permission to enter the city, and barricades were put up at Mulund toll naka, a key entry point to Mumbai. There was heavy police bandobast at the toll naka and across the city and more than 3,000 cops were deployed and traffic diverted.
Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Satyanarayan Choudhary, who was at spot monitoring the situation, confirmed the crowd left Monday night after handing over their letter to govt representatives. Close to 2,000 vehicles were part of the protest, an officer said, adding the rally of Muslims was also joined by vehicles comprising activists from the Dalit and Maratha communities.
The first traffic snarl was witnessed on the expressway soon after the vehicles entered it through Harsul Sawangi junction from Sambhajinagar. Similar situations arose at multiple locations till the rally, which even had private buses and mini-trucks, reached Mulund naka, where the police barricaded the entry point. Not taking any chances, the Sambhajinagar police as well as the state intelligence department deputed their teams along with the rally.
According to arrangements made by the Mumbai police, the cavalcade was to be stopped at Mulund naka and asked to return.
While heading to Mumbai after reaching Mumbra, Jaleel said, "We are going to Mumbai to make a representation to the chief minister and deputy CM (Fadnavis), who also holds charge of the home department. We will remind them that it is their duty to ensure that law prevails. Our protest is against state inaction against Ramgiri Maharaj and Nitesh Rane, who are already booked in several FIRs for inciting communal sentiments and for hate speeches."

September 24, 2024
RIYADH: Diriyah made history on Saudi Arabia’s 94th National Day by setting a Guinness World Record for the largest display of artificial-intelligence assistant devices.
The show, featuring over 500 Amazon Echo devices and Alexa voice assistants, was part of Diriyah’s celebrations of the country’s national day, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.
The SPA quoted from a Diriyah Gate Development Authority news release which stated that the Echo devices were orchestrated to harmonize Saudi Arabia’s national anthem and other patriotic songs at Bujairi Terrace.
Officials from the Guinness World Records’ authority were on hand to witness the extraordinary feat.
“Congratulations on achieving the Guinness World Records title for the largest display of virtual assistant devices,” said Kanzy El-Defrawy, the Guinness World Records’ senior adjudicator.
“Diriyah has consistently been at the forefront of introducing cutting-edge entertainment to the people of Saudi Arabia, and this achievement reflects your relentless drive to fuse artificial intelligence with cultural celebrations.”
The DGDA’s chief executive Jerry Inzerillo said: “This historic moment underscores Saudi Arabia’s innovative spirit and Diriyah’s commitment to preserving and promoting our rich heritage and culture.”
Dr. Raf Fatani, Amazon’s regional general manager of Alexa in the Middle East and North Africa, said the attempt to set a world record was “a celebration of our deep reverence for the Kingdom’s rich culture and heritage.
“Through this collaboration, we weave a tapestry that intertwines artificial intelligence with the timeless threads of Saudi culture.”
The DGDA held several other events including at the historic UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif, which attracted thousands of visitors.

Sinister Posters in Northern Ireland Warning Against “Facilitating” Muslims Branded
“Unacceptable and Worrying”

Anti-immigrant posters erected in the Rathcoole estate
------
September 24, 2024
The erection of anti-immigration posters near the Rathcoole estate in Newtownabbey have been condemned as “unacceptable and extremely concerning”.
A number of posters have appeared in the estate, on the outskirts of north Belfast, in recent weeks warning: “Anyone facilitating the settlement of Muslims or illegals in our areas will be held responsible.”
Other posters appearing on lampposts include statements warning: “Stop the illegal immigrants” and “We need to protect our children”.
Similar posters have previously been put up in other areas of the north recently, while Belfast erupted into racially fuelled disorder in August and a number of Muslim-owned businesses were targeted in arson attacks.
Antrim and Newtownabbey Alliance Party councillor Billy Webb condemned the latest posters.
“Erection of these posters is totally unacceptable and extremely concerning,” Mr Webb said.
“Those responsible do not represent the views of the broader community.
“There is no place in our community for racism, Xenophobia, Islamophobia, bigotry, or intimidation of any kind.”
DUP MLA for North Belfast Philip Brett said the Muslim community makes a “positive contribution” to the local area.
“The Muslim community makes a positive contribution to our local community, nursing our sick, educating our young people and growing the local economy,” Mr Brett said.
“The DUP have long advocated for a UK-wide immigration policy which properly deals with the issue of illegal immigration. We will continue to challenge the government on their failure to get to grips with this important issue.”
The PSNI in Antrim said it was aware of posters which appeared number of weeks ago.
An Inspector Patton said: “Where posters or other material such as this is discovered, they will be reviewed and an investigation will commence where there are offences made.
“At this time our officers are continuing to engage with the local community and representatives in the area, alongside our partner agencies in relation to the matter, to find a joint solution.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have any information which could assist with our enquiries to get in touch.”

Injustice On the Part of Judiciary and Political Leaders Responsible for Nigeria’s Woes — Islamic Scholars

Photo: vanguardngr.com/
----
September 24, 2024
SOME Islamic scholars including Sheikh Imran Abdul Majeer Elha and Dr AbdulRahman Lawal, yesterday, identified injustice on the part of judiciary and political leaders among citizens as the major cause of the problems currently confronting Nigeria.
This came as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and advancing judicial reforms in the State.
They spoke at the Mosque Prayer to Mark the Commencement of the 2024/2025 New Legal Year, held at the Lagos Central Mosque, Lagos Island.
In his lecture titled ‘Exploring the Roles of the Judiciary in Revitalizing Nigeria’s Economy through an Islamic Lens,’ Elha said: “The judicial career is a divine calling, and a career approved by Allah, paralleling it to the noble role of prophets who served as intermediaries between the people, as such, the profession demands utmost fairness, integrity, and dedication.
“On the last day, the sun will be brought closer to people thereby causing serious discomfort; Allah will command shadow to be on only those who judge rightly.”
“Injustice amongst the citizens, such as the usage of an imbalance scale is also a form of injustice, and must be avoided as such people will suffer three punishments from Allah, namely; hunger, cost of goods with unnecessarily high, and bad leaders.
“The three punishments are the major problem we are experiencing in Nigeria today.”
Also speaking in his lecture titled ‘Justice as a Catalyst for Economic Recovery and Political Stability in Nigeria’, Sheikh Lawal, noted that God strongly condemns injustice, having ordained it haram (forbidden) among people, and instead commands justice, fairness, and compassion in all human interactions.
Lawal said: “All those who aid injustice will be in total darkness on the last day. The government must take care of price control and enforce it nationwide.
“With a seamless price control across the nation, the economy will be stable and the issue of immigration to Lagos will reduce.”
Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the church service by his wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu restated his administration’s commitment towards ensuring that the state judiciary is adequately equipped for the speedy dispensation of justice.
The governor gave the assurance yesterday at the special thanksgiving service for commencing the 2024/2025 new legal year of the Lagos State Judiciary held at the Cathedral Church of Christ Marina, Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu said: “The construction of new court complexes and the renovation of existing judicial infrastructure have created a more conducive environment for the dispensation of justice.
“I am particularly proud of the digitalisation of the judiciary’s filing processes, which has significantly reduced delays in filing cases.
“I would also like to take this moment to reaffirm the commitment of the Executive arm of government to uphold the rule of law and advancing judicial reforms. We fully recognize the critical role of the judiciary in maintaining justice and order, and we are committed to supporting and strengthening it in every way possible.
“As we begin this new legal year, we look forward to the completion of important projects, such as the Commercial Court in Tapa, and to the renewed efforts of the judiciary to ensure that Lagos State continues to be a model of progress, justice, and modernity in the legal sphere.”
Speaking at the Jumat service, at the Lagos Central Mosque, Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kazeem Alogba, promised that the judiciary in the state would continue to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.

Dhaka Protests Indian HM’s Comment On Bangladeshis, Lodged A "Strong" Protest Against "Highly Deplorable" Remarks

Sep 24, 2024
The government yesterday lodged a "strong" protest against "highly deplorable" remarks of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah about Bangladeshi nationals during his recent visit to Jharkhand.
Through a protest note handed over to the deputy high commissioner of India in Dhaka, the foreign ministry conveyed its "serious reservation, deep sense of hurt and extreme displeasure", according to a ministry statement published on its Facebook page.
It called upon the Indian government to advise the political leaders to refrain from making such "objectionable and unacceptable" remarks.
The ministry also emphasised that such remarks, coming from responsible positions against the nationals of a neighbouring country, undermine the spirit of mutual respect and understanding between two friendly countries.
Amit Shah on Friday said at a rally in Jharkhand that if the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party returns to power in the state, it will chase Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators out of Jharkhand.

Shimla Illegal Mosque Row: Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti To Stage StatewideProtest On Sept. 28
September 23, 2024
Protests against the alleged illegal construction of mosque at Sanjauli in the suburbs of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh refuses to relent with the Devbhoomi Sangarsh Samiti threatening to hold protest across the state on 28 September.
Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, the samiti’s convener Bharat Bhushan said that the protest will be held at all the district headquarters of the state. He said that on October 5, if the decision in the court of Shimla Municipal Corporation is not in the interest of the state’s public, they will start ‘jail baro andolan’ across the entire state. He said that a movement against the issue had been started on September 1 and the protests have been held at 28 places across the state so far.
“This is the first movement in the history of Himachal Pradesh, which does not have a single leader, no political party or organization is leading it. For the first time, the society has stood up for the movement,” he said, adding that the message is clear that the public is not silent on this issue. He said that if the decision comes in the favour of the interest of the people of Himachal, it will be welcomed, or else the committee will struggle till the illegal encroachment is removed.
The samiti has has formed 26 units in the entire tehsil level to pursue the issue and all the Panchyats have been asked to pass resolutions regarding illegal immigrants in the Gram Sabha to be held on October 2 and strict action should be taken. “Complete verification of the migrants selling goods and items should be done and timing for doing their business should also be fixed,” he asserted.
The immigrants are to be blamed for the increasing crime in the state and they are also responsible for the elopement of young daughters and daughter-in-laws, he alleged, stating that in the last one year, more than 300 women’s missing reports have been registered in the various police stations of Himachal.
“The Sanjauli mosque which led to the state wide protest has been built by encroaching on government land, he claimed, adding that the Samiti is helping the government in removing encroachment.

In Letter To Revenue Dept, Udaipur Collector Asks For Cancellation Of Land Allotment For Madrasa
23.09.24
Udaipur district collector has written a letter to the revenue department seeking the cancellation of land allotment for a Madrasa in Mavli town after the SDM sent a report on it.
Mavli SDM Mansukhram sent a report to Udaipur collector on Saturday, recommending the cancellation of the land on several grounds, including the accumulation of water on it, making it connected to a court's judgment regarding restoration of catchment areas.
The land was allotted to Madarsa Islamiya Gausiya Anjuman in Mavli by an order issued by Udaipur collector in 2022 during the former Congress government's rule, with Hindu organisations demanding cancellation of the allotment.
The report by the SDM also sought the cancellation of the land saying it was "controversial" as there have been "communal disputes" over it.
On the basis of the report, the collector wrote to the revenue department on Monday, seeking cancellation of the land allotment.
On Monday, Hindu organisations demonstrated against the land allotment in a rally in Mavli sub division and handed over a memorandum to the SDM to raise the demand for cancellation.
Udaipur Collector Arvind Poswal said that the letter to the revenue department was written on the basis of the SDM's report which explains the reasons why the land should be cancelled.
In the report, the SDM has mentioned that the area has a high population of Hindu families.
The SDM also said that the land has accumulated water on it and a high-tension line is passing above. The SDM had prepared the report on directions of the collector after Hindu organisations gave multiple memorandums on it.
Local BJP leader Rajesh Chaplot, who was part of Monday's demonstrations, said that the land was allotted for a Madrasa by the former Congress government without considering the reports from tehsildar.
"The then-collector had allotted the land under pressure from the Congress government. There was resentment among the Hindu communities on the land allotment to a Madrasa in a Hindu dominated area," he said.
Today's demonstration in Mavli was attended by Chittorgarh MP and former BJP state president CP Joshi.
"I want to thank the government that the proposal to cancel the land has also been taken forward. The land allotment will certainly be cancelled," Joshi said.
Madhavanand Bhartiya, a Hindu seer, claimed that the land allotted for the Madrasa belonged to Hindus.

Will be your voice in parliament: Rahul Gandhi to people of Jammu and Kashmir
23.09.24
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday promised to be the voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in Parliament, reiterating the Congress party's commitment to put pressure on the BJP-ruled Centre to restore J-K's statehood.
"Whenever you need me, you just have to give me an order and I will be present before you. I will raise your issues in Parliament. You know the special relationship I have with you. I do not have to even mention it," Gandhi told an election rally in the Zainakote area on the city's outskirts.
"I will be your voice in parliament," he told the gathering.
Gandhi said the biggest issue for the people of J-K is the restoration of the statehood. "We guarantee that it will be restored. If the BJP does not give it you (after elections), we will ensure that it is restored." The Congress leader said downgrading J-K into a Union Territory was an injustice done to the people of J-K.
"Your democratic right has been snatched by downgrading the state into a UT," he said.
Referring to the now defunct HMT watch factory, located at the stone's throw from the venue of the rally, Gandhi said the BJP has closed many such factories across the country.
He accused the Modi-led government of benefitting only 25 businessmen of the country, while ignoring the common people. "For 25 people, he waived Rs 16 lakh crore loan. They do not waive off loans of poor, farmers, labourers, students, and women." "They brought a flawed GST, and effected demonestisation and forced the closure of small and medium businesses. The result has been that the youths of the country including J-K are not getting jobs. They may have college and university degrees, but they are not getting jobs. This is the gift of Narendra Modi. This is his politics," he said.
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly radio show 'Mann ki Baat', Gandhi said Modi makes long and "meaningless" speeches, but is not willing to address the issues of the country.
"He only talks about his Mann Ki baat and not Kaam ki baat. Kaam ki baat is to give jobs and vision to the youth, reduce and restore statehood to J-K. No one is listening to your Mann ki Baat (anymore)," Gandhi said at the rally.

J-K polls: Will Omar rebound from Lok Sabha defeat? 2.5 million to decide ex-CM's fate
24.09.24
2.5 million voters will decide the fate of 239 candidates in the fray for 26 Jammu and Kashmir assembly seats in the second phase of the election to be held in the Union territory on Wednesday.
These assembly constituencies are spread over six districts – three in the Valley and as many in the Jammu division.
"To facilitate smooth and hassle-free electoral participation, the Election Commission of India has established 3,502 polling stations in these segments. There are 1,056 urban polling stations and 2,446 rural polling stations," an official said.
All polling stations will have webcasting facilities as part of the Election Commission's efforts to ensure transparency, according to officials.
"To enhance voter participation, 157 special polling stations have been established for the second phase – 26 'pink polling stations' managed by women, 26 polling stations manned by specially abled persons, 26 polling stations manned by youths, 31 border polling stations, 26 green polling stations and 22 unique polling stations," the official said.
Voting will take place from 7 am to 6 pm.
Key names in the fray for this phase are former chief minister Omar Abdullah, JKPCC president Tariq Hamid Karra and BJP J-K chief Ravinder Raina.
Abdullah is contesting from the Ganderbal and Budgam seats, while Karra is contesting from Central Shalteng. Raina will be trying to retain his Nowshera seat in Rajouri district which he won in the 2014 assembly polls.
The second phase will be watched keenly as jailed separatist leader Sarjan Ahmad Wagay alias Barkati is hoping to repeat Engineer Rashid's Lok Sabha poll feat against the National Conference leader.
Barkati is contesting from the Beerwah and Ganderbal segments.
Popularly known as Rashid Engineer, Sheikh Abdul Rashid contested the parliamentary polls held earlier this year from Tihar jail and still managed to defeat Abdullah by a margin of more than two lakh votes from the Baramulla constituency.
Other key candidates in this second phase of assembly polls are Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari (Channapora), former ministers Ali Mohammad Sagar (Khanyar), Abdul Rahim Rather (Chrar-i-Sharief), and Choudhary Zulfikar Ali (Budhal) and Syed Mushtaq Bukhari (Surankote).
Choudhary Zulfikar Ali and Syed Mushtaq Bukhari are contesting on BJP tickets this time.
An estimated 61.38 per cent of the electorate cast their ballots in the first phase of polling on September 18. The third phase will go to polls on October 1. The votes will be counted on October 8.
During this phase, 93 candidates are in the fray in Srinagar district, followed by 46 in Budgam district, 34 in Rajouri district, 25 in Poonch district, 21 in Ganderbal district and 20 in Reasi district.
The constituencies in Srinagar district are Hazratbal, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Lal Chowk, Channapora, Zadibal, Central Shalteng and Eidgah.
The segments in Budgam district are Budgam, Beerwah, Khansahib, Chrar-I-Sharief and Chadoora while there are two constituencies in Ganderbal district -- Kangan (ST) and Ganderbal.

"Roads, schools are not issue, but Islam is in danger...": Ghulam Nabi Azad slams regional parties in J-K Polls
Sep 23, 2024
Ganderbal (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 23 (ANI): Democratic Progressive Azad Party Chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Monday that the issues in Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls have not changed and he is listening to the same slogans that were used to be there in elections during his college days. Azad also pointed out that the regional parties in the Union Territory are dividing the people based on religion and roads, schools and education are not an issue, but Islam (/topic/islam) is a danger--that is the issue. He said, "It's a matter of happiness that elections are happening but the sad thing is that they weren't held earlier. I thought that the issues would change in this election but unfortunately, the issues haven't changed. I am listening to the same slogans that were used to be there in elections when I was in college... Roads, schools, and education are not an issue, but Islam (/topic/islam) is in danger--that is the issue. How can Islam (/topic/islam) be in danger? Many big powers came into the world but couldn't finish Islam (/topic/islam); how can it be finished now?" "We oppose the BJP (/topic/bjp) as they divide people based on religion, but here also, people are doing the same. It means they are also dividing people in the name of religion. Even in the places where the Muslim population contributes to five per cent, they are not in danger, but here where Muslims are 98 per cent, they are saying that Islam (/topic/islam) is in danger," Azad added. Even earlier today, the former J-K Chief Minister called leaders of political parties his competitors, adding that he does not consider them enemies."The political parties are not my enemies; they are our competitors. Like in class, we are all good friends but there is a competition...So I take every political party and leader as my competitor," Democratic Progressive Azad Party Chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad said while doing a roadshow in Ganderbal in view of the Assembly elections in UnionTerritory. Jammu and Kashmir is voting for its 90-member assembly in three phases. The first phase of voting took place on September 18. otably, a voter turnout of 61.13 pc was registered in the first phase of polling in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls, which were held in 24 constituencies in seven districts on September 18. Voting for the second and third phases in J-K will be held on September 25 and October 1, respectively. Votes will be counted on October 8. (ANI)

Will continue to knock SC's door for restoration of Article 370 in J-K: Farooq Abdullah
23.09.24
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday said they will continue to knock at the Supreme Court's door for the restoration of Article 370 as “it is linked with the honour of the people” of Jammu and Kashmir.
The former chief minister said the "frequent" terror attacks, especially in the peaceful Jammu region, contradicts the BJP-led government’s claim terrorism "finished" with the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an election rally in Budhal in support of party candidate Choudhary Javid, who is pitted against former minister and BJP candidate Choudhary Zulfikar Ali, Abdullah expressed confidence in his party forming the government with its coalition partner Congress after the elections.
Responding to a question on the BJP’s clear message that Article 370 has become history and nobody is going to restore it, Abdullah said they will knock the door of the Supreme Court till the constitutional provision is restored in the Union Territory.
“It (restoration of Article 370) is a legal battle because two earlier SC judgments by three-judge benches have made it clear that it is permanent and not a temporary provision. We will go to the top court again and again till we get it back. It is linked with the honour of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah said.
The NC leader said the BJP blamed them and the Article 370 for terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and said the terror incidents, especially in the Jammu region, contradict their claims.
“I want to ask them that five years have passed since the abrogation of Article 370 but terror incidents are still killing people. Only yesterday, we had an encounter in the Kishtwar district of Jammu,” he said.
The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister questioned the "silence" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the alleged rape of a scheduled caste woman, a sanitation worker at Ayodhya's Ram temple, and said, “Is she not our sister and daughter? They say we protect the citizens but the fact is they only care for their chair.” The woman had accused nine people of rape. According to her complaint lodged at Ayodhya’s Cantt police station, she was gang-raped on three different occasions between August 16 and 25.
On BJP’s claim that they will form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir with 10 independents from Kashmir, he said, “They are saying a lot but where do they get these winners from? Do they come from the sky?” He said the NC-Congress alliance is moving smoothly and “we are sure of getting a majority to form the next government in J-K”.
Earlier, addressing a rally, Abdullah said the BJP is talking a lot about Article 370 but the reality is that they are "dishonouring" Maharaja Hari Singh, the last Dogra ruler who introduced land laws in Jammu and Kashmir in 1927, which later became part of Article 370 after Independence.
“Those who celebrated the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 by distributing sweets are ruing the decision today because they are losing their lands and their children are not getting jobs. The local officers are missing in the civil secretariat as people from outside were given top posts,” Abdullah claimed.
“The NC-Congress has come together to change the destiny of Jammu and Kashmir and end the 10-year-old misrule of the BJP. We have to fight the hatred spread by them by standing united and defeating their designs,” Abdullah said.

UAE lauds UN adoption of ‘Pact for the Future’
September 23, 2024
NEW YORK CITY: The UAE has welcomed the adoption by UN member states of a “Pact for the Future,” a campaign the organization described as bringing multilateralism “back from the brink.”
Speaking at the Summit of the Future on Monday, Emirati Development Minister Ohoud Al-Roumi said the UAE “applauded the efforts made by all” to get the agreement signed.
The pact aims to rebuild trust in the UN and its ability to tackle global crises, as well as renew support for the organization’s Sustainable Development Goals, which were launched in 2015.
The motion to adopt the pact was passed on Monday at the start of the summit, with opposition led by Russia as well as Iran, Sudan and Syria. Several regional countries abstained from the vote, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Oman.
“Conflicts and crises are multiplying and are hindering progress and the attainment of peace and international security,” Al-Roumi said.
“Given these increasing challenges, we must focus on the chances and the opportunities offered by international cooperation for a better future.
“The situation across the world requires us to pool our efforts, for us to commit and respect our commitments, in order to overcome these challenges.”
Al-Roumi also said the UN Charter and the principles of multilateralism and international action need to be strengthened.
She added that this has to be coupled with a global focus on youth and women’s empowerment, building a sustainable digital economy, and the proper adoption of modern technology to benefit all.

Saudi FM calls for UN reform
CASPAR WEBB
September 23, 2024
NEW YORK CITY: The UN system must be reformed to create a fairer and more equitable world order, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said on Monday.
Addressing the UN at its headquarters in New York City, Prince Faisal bin Farhan warned that international institutions are “unfit for purpose,” as demonstrated by the UN’s inability to hold Israel accountable for “all the atrocities it has committed.”
He was speaking a day after UN member states voted to adopt the “Pact for the Future,” a campaign to bring multilateralism “back from the brink” and galvanize support for achieving the organization’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Saudi Arabia “spared no effort” in taking part in negotiations over the pact, he said, thanking attendees for their cooperation during intense debate over the outcome document.
“We did this because we’re convinced that we need to do everything to build a better world, a greener world,” he added.
“We must also promote multilateralism so as to effectively confront today’s challenges and future challenges, achieving peace and security for the benefit of future generations.”
The pact is “aligned with fundamental principles,” Prince Faisal said, adding that achieving its objectives requires a “doubling of efforts to confront the various challenges and meet the needs of people all over the world.”
He added: “This pact marks a qualitative step forward in multilateral action. It promises a fair and equitable world order, a world order which promotes the implementation of the SDGs and meets the needs of all states, specifically developing countries.
“It’s a pact which calls for the closing of the digital gap, and which also promotes economic development in developing countries.”
Saudi Arabia has been working intensely to strengthen multilateral cooperation, but achieving a brighter future demands UN reform, Prince Faisal said.
As part of the “pressing matter,” the UN must be reconstructed to shoulder its responsibility in upholding international peace and security, he added.
On climate change, Saudi Arabia is “committed to a diversified approach that is context specific and tailored to the capacities of each and every country,” he said.
Energy security, economic development and mitigation of the effects of climate change are the three pillars that offer a solution to the challenge, Prince Faisal added.
“We need to ensure that our commitments enshrined in the Paris Agreement and the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) are upheld,” he said.
“We’ll be welcoming the next meeting of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. This will be the 30th anniversary meeting of parties to the convention.”
Saudi Arabia, which is “committed to meeting the SDGs” and the objectives of the “Pact of the Future,” will “make every effort to bolster cooperation,” Prince Faisal said.
“We hope that our collective efforts will allow us to uphold various values such as sovereignty, and to build a better future for current and future generations.”

No, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has not pledged to build 46,000 new homes ‘just for Muslims’
23 SEPTEMBER 2024
Posts being shared on social media misinterpret comments made by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to falsely claim he pledged to build 46,000 houses “just for Muslims”.
A video of Mr Khan speaking has been shared with the caption: “Sadiq Khan says he will build 46,000 new homes in London just for Muslims who want to live closer to a mosque.”
While this is a genuine interview with Mr Khan, he did not make the comments attributed to him in the posts.
The video shows Mr Khan during an interview shared by the Islam Channel before May’s mayoral elections in which he won 43.8% of the vote and was reelected for his third consecutive term. The interview was shared on 26 April with the caption: “How is Sadiq Khan’s manifesto going to affect the Muslim community?” And while Mr Khan gives his answers in the context of the Muslim community, he does not pledge any homes exclusively for Muslims.
He actually said: “The other big issues faced in London, particularly Londoners of Islamic faith, is the issue of housing. And so we need to build far more homes in our city because you know often people from minority communities want to live near a mosque, near halal food, near places where other people like them for a variety of obvious reasons, and they're priced out because there's not enough housing. So we're going to build at least 40,000 council homes, at least 6,000 rent control homes.”
The manifesto he was elected on includes a “key pledge” to build 40,000 new council homes by 2030 and 6,000 Rent Control Homes (where authorities can set rent levels or limit increases) in “areas where they are needed most”. There’s no mention of the housing being for a specific demographic.
This is not the first time we’ve seen online posts misinterpret comments made by Mr Khan during this interview—posts circulating in May similarly claimed he’d pledged houses and free education exclusively for Muslims.
As we wrote at the time, a spokesperson for Mr Khan said such claims are “completely false” and added that: “The Mayor did not say these words—and can clearly be heard discussing his policy of providing free skills training to any young Londoner who is unemployed or in low-paid work, as well as talking about the need to build more housing for all.”
In July, the newly-elected Labour government set a new annual target of 80,000 homes to be built in London compared with the 35,000 built in 2023. For more information on house building in England, you can read or watch our explainer.
We’ve written about other false claims relating to Mr Khan, including a suspected deepfake audio clip allegedly recording him saying ‘Remembrance weekend’ should be postponed, but we could find no evidence that it was genuine.

Ukraine should be ‘realistic’ – NATO country’s president
23 Sep, 2024
Kiev should accept “temporary” Russian control over some territories as the likely outcome of the conflict, Czech President Petr Pavel has said.
Pavel, who is an outspoken supporter of Ukraine, told the New York Times that neither Moscow nor Kiev seem able to achieve their maximalist goals.
“To talk about a defeat of Ukraine or defeat of Russia, it will simply not happen,” Pavel told the US outlet in the interview published on Monday. “So the end will be somewhere in between.”
“The most probable outcome of the war will be that a part of Ukrainian territory will be under Russian occupation, temporarily,” he added, predicting that the “temporary thing” could last for years.
Vladimir Zelensky’s government has ruled out any peace that does not restore Ukraine’s 1991 borders – which would include Crimea, as well as the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye. Russia has repeatedly said that the status of Russian regions is non-negotiable and that Ukraine needs to “acknowledge reality” before a ceasefire can happen, much less a peace treaty.
Crimea, a historically Russian region reassigned to Ukraine in 1954, voted to return to Russia in 2014, following the US-backed coup in Kiev. The two Donbass republics decided to secede from Ukraine, but Russia declined to recognize them until February 2022, when Kiev disavowed the Minsk peace process. The DPR and LPR voted to join Russia, along with most of Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions, in September 2023.
With fatigue from the conflict “growing everywhere” and “populists” like Viktor Orban of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia disrupting EU unity, according to Pavel, Ukrainians need to be “realistic about the support that they can achieve.”
The Times acknowledged that the Czech presidency is “largely ceremonial” but described Pavel’s views as “generally aligned” with Prime Minister Petr Fiala. Meanwhile, almost two thirds of Czechs would support a peace in Ukraine if it meant Kiev ceding some territory, while 54% were against Prague’s “ammunition initiative” to supply artillery shells to Ukraine, according to polling from earlier this year.
Pavel has previously argued that the Czechs had “no other option but to support Ukraine at this time,” because Prague opposes a world “where one country can invade another just because it is bigger and stronger.”
The Czech Republic joined NATO in March 1999, 12 days before the US-led bloc launched an unauthorized air war against Serbia and Montenegro on behalf of ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo.

Ex-Harrods boss saw 'abhorrent' behaviour from Fayed
Ben King
24 Sep, 2024
Former Harrods chief executive, James McArthur, witnessed "abhorrent" behaviour from Mohamed Al Fayed, but not sexual abuse, he has told the BBC.
The late Harrods owner has been accused of sexual assault and rape by more than 20 women, who spoke to the BBC for a documentary broadcast last week.
Mr McArthur was chief executive at Harrods for ten months in 2008, a time when the Metropolitan police investigated an alleged assault on a 15-year-old girl in a Harrods boardroom.
He says he was unaware of the investigation, even though it was covered in the media at the time, which he says he doesn't recall.
In a written statement, he told the BBC: “I was indeed CEO of Harrods for a short, and most unpleasant, 10 months during 2008 under Fayed [sic]."
"While Fayed’s behaviour was often abhorrent in many ways, and professional relationships with him were largely dysfunctional, I was not aware of any sexual abuse by him – if I had been, I would have taken action," he said.
The "abhorrent" behaviour included Fayed's inappropriate sense of humour, and lack of professional conduct, he said.
Ten months is a very short stint for a chief executive, and turnover of chief executives and other directors was high at Harrods under Fayed's ownership.
Mr McArthur added: "I was also not aware of a Met Police investigation into Fayed’s conduct during 2008. Fayed would, I imagine, have tried to keep anything like that closely under his control within the secure precinct of the chairman’s office."
The initial accusation in 2008 and the subsequent investigation were covered in a number of newspaper articles. Questioned about this, Mr McArthur said: "I do not recall that at all."
A file was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service, who decided there wasn't enough evidence to secure a conviction.
Mr McArthur added: "I am absolutely horrified by the details of the allegations bravely brought to light through the BBC. My heart goes out to Fayed’s victims, and I do hope very much that they will get the justice and closure that they are seeking."
After leaving Harrods, Mr McArthur was chief executive of handbag maker Anya Hindmarch for four years, then held a number of roles including chairman of Lulu Guinness, according to his LinkedIn profile. He now lists his occupation as "investor/director/adviser".
The BBC has contacted a number of former directors of Harrods during Al-Fayed's ownership.
Yesterday the chief executive of the department store Selfridges, Andre Maeder, who was a director at Harrods for six years between 1996 and 2002, told the BBC he was "horrified" to learn about the alleged rapes and sexual assaults detailed in the documentary, but said he "never saw or heard anything” about this "abhorrent" behaviour.
Richard Simonin, chief executive from 2003 to 2005, declined to comment when contacted on the social networking site LinkedIn.
Harrods was bought by the gulf state of Qatar in 2010. The new owner has admitted that victims were failed, and said it would settle legal claims.
Yesterday it emerged that Harrods is investigating whether current staff were involved in any of the allegations against Fayed, who died last year aged 94.

The incident occurred around 8 pm on Sunday, shortly after worshippers concluded the day’s final prayers.
Eyewitnesses report that the attackers ambushed the group as they exited the mosque, with Imam Maidara attempting to flee through a different route.
However, bandits stationed along his escape path opened fire, killing him instantly.

Edo Guber: All Major Political Parties Engaged In Vote Buying – Itodo
23 September 2024
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
The Executive Director of pro-democracy group Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, has alleged that major political parties engaged in vote buying during the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday.
The election, which concluded with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner, has drawn scrutiny from various civil society organizations.
Itodo in an interview with Channels TV, noted that observers from Yiaga Africa and other groups reported instances of voter bribery, with parties distributing between ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 to influence voters at polling stations.
Naija News had earlier reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the outcome of the governorship election.
PDP on Sunday, declared that its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, won the 2024 governorship election.
The party, in a statement released through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, insisted that the results of the Edo State Governorship election, as garnered by its polling agents across the State, indicate that the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, clearly won the election.
Ologunagba added that the same position was echoed by the Chairman of the Edo PDP National Campaign Council, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State and warned both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the All Progressives Congress (APC) against tampering with the results.
The PDP accused the APC of trying to steal the mandate of its candidate.

Islami Andolan for inclusion of Islamic scholars in textbook revision process
23 Sep 2024,
DHAKA, Sept 22, 2024 (BSS)- Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, Amir of the Islamic Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) today demanded of the Interim Government include alem ulemas and Islamic scholars in the textbooks revision committee.
“It is not pleasant not to engage Islamic scholars in textbook revision . . . Include country’s alem ulema and Islamic scholars in the revision committee; otherwise any conspiracy with the education won’t be tolerated,” Rezaul Karim, popularly known as Charmonai Pir, said while addressing a public rally at Kalkini in Madaripur this afternoon.
Kalkini Upazila unit of the IAB organized the rally, where he highlighted the supreme sacrifices of the people in the anti-discrimination movement that led to ousting the Awami League government.
Criticizing some unruly activities soon after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled from the country, the Charmonai Pir said, “Our movement was against repression and tyranny, but we saw a group engaging in unlawful activities like occupying others’ property, extortion and destruction as well like before. These must be stopped.”
The IAB Amir put emphasis on establishing a welfare state with the participation all people as it’s not possible to change the lots of people without establishing a welfare state.
“It is the demand of time to hold an acceptable election after ensuring the necessary reforms . . . Otherwise, country’s Independence will not be meaningful,” Mufti Rezaul Karim added.
He urged the government to ensure the trial of killers involved in the recent students-people protest, confiscate their assets and disqualify them in the next polls.
IAB central and local leaders also spoke on the occasion.

Afghanistan’s seat at UN should be given to Islamic Emirate
September 24, 2024
Afghanistan has repeatedly called on the United Nations to give the country’s seat to the Islamic Emirate. It has been more than three years since the Islamic Emirate came to power but the seat for Afghanistan in the UN has not been handed over to the designated ambassador of the Islamic Emirate. The Islamic Emirate insisted that nobody could represent Afghanistan in the United Nations and that the seat should be given to the Islamic Emirate. After more than three years in power, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) deserves full-scale recognition, and it is time that the country’s seat at the United Nations should be given to the representative of the Islamic Emirate. In early December 2023, the UN General Assembly had re viewed to consider whether or not to allow the Islamic Emirate to take Afghanistan’s seat at the world body. They avoided giving the seat to the Islamic Emirate because of unclear reasons despite the fact that the Islamic Emirate is ruling in the entire territory. The Islamic Emirate in September 2021 appointed Suhail Shaheen, who is currently heading up the political office in Qatar, as Afghanistan’s ambassador to the UN. Shaheen has repeatedly called on the United Nations to give the seat to Afghanistan. The Islamic Emirate’s designated UN representative had previously accused the world organization of acting without neutrality in determining the seat of Afghanistan and using the matter to put pressure on the Emirate. The Islamic Emirate argues that it is the legitimate government of Afghanistan based on the claim that it has full territorial control, has ended the war and brought overall security to all Afghans. Currently, the Islamic Emirate has control of 39 Afghanistan embassies and consulates globally. A number of neighboring countries, including China, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan, have officially accepted the Islamic Emirate’s ambassadors in their capitals. Afghanistan Minister of Foreign Affairs in his most recent remarks has said that the Islamic Emirate has control of 39 embassies and diplomatic affairs globally. “Thirty-nine embassies and diplomatic affairs obey the central authority, namely the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” said Acting Foreign Minister Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi at a press conference in Kabul last week. He added that his ministry had sent dozens of diplomats to 11 countries in the past year, including Turkiye, Russia, Iran and Pakistan. Muttaqi said Afghanistan would send a new ambassador to Uzbekistan this week and expected Russia to remove the Islamic Emirate from its list of banned organizations soon. It is worth mentioning that in July, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said it was cutting ties with at least 14 Afghan diplomatic missions, adding it would not honor passports and visas issued by those embassies, mostly based in Europe. Biden, Yunus Talks: Govt looks to strengthen trade, ties

The bilateral meeting between Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and US President Joe Biden due today provides a rare opportunity for Dhaka to push for improving trade and boost the economy, say analysts.
Biden agreeing to meet with Yunus on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York signals Washington's eagerness to support Bangladesh's interim government.
Diplomatic sources said the US president usually goes to the UNGA for a short time and holding any bilateral meetings with the head of the Bangladesh government is rare.
"This signals that Washington wants to seriously engage with Dhaka because Bangladesh is important for the US and Prof Yunus has a global standing," said Obaidul Haque, associate professor at Dhaka University's International Relations Department.
He said the US has been trying to deepen the engagement with Bangladesh over the last few years, but it was not going very well. Now that the interim government has taken up initiatives for widespread reforms, and promised democratic elections and good governance, Washington is showing increasing interest.
The US suspended the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) facility for Bangladesh in the aftermath of Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, citing poor labour conditions. In 2021, it imposed sanctions against Rab and seven of its top officials over human rights violations and in May last year announced visa restrictions for those undermining democratic elections.
Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina made critical remarks of the US that was vocal about human rights, media freedom, and free and fair election ahead of the national polls on January 7 this year.
With the changed political landscape, the Dhaka-Washington relations appeared to take a new trajectory.
A six-member US delegation, led by Treasury Department's Assistant Secretary Brent Nieman, visited Dhaka in mid-September, the first foreign delegation's tour after the interim government was formed.
The delegation said Washington would be happy to support Prof Yunus' reform agenda and expressed eagerness to offer technical and financial assistance for reforms.
According to foreign policy analysts, Bangladesh's main challenge is now the economy, and the reforms agenda being taken up will be successful if the economic challenge can be addressed. Things may be different otherwise.
With better political understanding, Bangladesh may secure greater economic benefits and have access to new avenues for much-needed external funds, at favourable conditions, said Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, a senior research fellow at the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance at North South University.
Even with about 18 percent duty, Bangladesh's export to the US is close to $8 billion and it can be easily increased by a few billion if there is a duty-free quota-free facility, and non-tariff barriers are addressed.
"The US administration may, if felt imperative to do so, consider flexible ways and special vehicles to offer GSP facility to Bangladesh in the changed circumstances," he told The Daily Star yesterday.
With Washington's support, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank may favour allocating funds for Bangladesh. Such support will have positive impacts on the overall economy because the funding will lead to economic stabilisation, employment generation, and increased wages, he said.
These in turn can embolden the interim government's resolve and capacity to secure improved governance, higher labour standards, and better human rights. Such a positive spiral can also encourage greater economic interaction and quality investments from other Western countries.
"If the US companies can be encouraged to invest in the IT sector of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi IT experts in the US can be connected to our IT industry, it can significantly increase Bangladesh's IT-related services export. The same can happen with other cutting-edge technologies if the US shows keenness only with deeper political understanding, trust, and confidence," said Sufiur, Bangladesh's former permanent representative to the UN offices and international organisations in Geneva.
Sufiur said over the last years of the Awami League government, Bangladesh had to depend more on China for its failure to bridge gaps with the US and the West, and there is a real chance of striking a balance now.
DU teacher Obaidul said Washington can also provide budgetary support, which is much needed in Bangladesh.
He said the export of Bangladeshi readymade garments saw a decline amid recent demonstrations and subsequent unrest, and US support towards this end will be extremely helpful.
Washington can also support Bangladesh's reform process, including in financial and security sectors.
"If Bangladesh improves in human rights, labour rights, and governance sectors, and eventually the sanction against Rab is withdrawn, this will have positive impacts on Bangladesh's export to the Western countries," Obaidul added.
Analysts said Prof Yunus, who has earned US trust, is expected to discuss these aspects and take forward the US-Bangladesh relations to a new level.
Dhaka needs to ensure that it maintains a balanced foreign policy, they added.

Afghanistan’s GDP witnesses 2.7 pc increase in a year, official
September 24, 2024
KABUL: The Ministry of Economy said Monday that Afghanistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased by 2.7% over the past one year. Abdul Rahman Habib, the spokesperson of the ministry, as quoted by the media, said the increase was due to the expansion of exports, support for the private sector and other factors. According to the ministry, the agricultural sector, as quoted by TOLOnews TV said: 34.3% with a growth of 2.1%, the industrial sector: 13.5% with a growth of 2.6%, the mining sector: 2.4%, the water, electricity, and gas sector: 2.8% with a growth of 5%, and the services sector: 46.8% have been calculated.” Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce and Investment said that to increase GDP revenue, the Islamic Emirate needs to support various sectors in the country. “With the arrival of the Islamic Emirate, significant attention has been given to domestic production For example, taxes on industrialists and farmers have been reduced, and small businesses have also benefited from tax reductions,” Khanjan Alokozai, a member of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, said Abdul Naseer Rashtia, an economic expert, said: “Any country that focuses more on an inward-looking economy and takes production seriously can achieve three things: first, it prevents the outflow of currency, meaning what we import can be produced domestically; second, it creates employment because the higher the investments, the more jobs are created; and third, it can lead to economic growth in the country.” The Ministry of Economy has also cited the expansion of exports, the stability of the Afghan currency against the dollar, the prevention of currency smuggling, the reduction of raw material prices, the reconstruction of highways, and the implementation of national and entrepreneurial projects in various sectors as effective factors in increasing the GDP. Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan‘Denies’ Involvement in Swat Attack On Diplomats
Fazal Khaliq
September 24, 2024
SWAT: A case has been registered against unidentified persons over Sunday’s explosion which targeted a diplomatic convoy in Swat.
The Counter-Terrorism Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police has registered the FIR a day after one cop was martyred and five others were injured in the attack.
The FIR has been registered under sections 324, 353 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code; sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act; and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
The PPC sections deal with crimes of wilful murder, assault on public servants and causing damage, while Section 7 of ATA outlines a punishment of ten years to life for acts of terrorism.
The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan has denied its involvement in the attack, according to AFP.
In a statement, the group said it had “nothing to do with the attack” targeting the foreign ambassadors of a dozen nations.
The attack has been condemned by the Swat Chamber of Commerce, traders’ federation, lawyers, and civil society members.
Meanwhile, the funeral prayer of martyred constable Burhan Khan was held at the Police Lines, Mingora, on Monday.
He was laid to rest with official honours in his ancestral cemetery in Shamozai village of Swat.

Imran, Bushra expected to be indicted at next hearing of new Toshakhana case
By Shabbir Ahmed Dar
September 23, 2024
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are expected to be indicted in the new Toshakhana case at the next hearing.
The new Toshakhana case's hearing against the incarcerated former premier and the ex-former first lady was held at a makeshift court in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on Monday.
The copies of the challan (charge sheet) submitted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to the court were also provided to the couple.
The proceedings of the new Toshakhana case started last week after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was barred from pursuing the matter and the case was transferred to the FIA in line with the Supreme Court's verdict restoring amendments to the anti-corruption laws.
The first hearing was conducted by Special Court Central Judge Shahrukh Arjumand in Adiala Jail.
At today's hearing, the FIA prosecutor told the court that the bail plea of both the accused was filed under the NAB laws. He added that the new Toshakhana case was transferred to the FIA and under the laws of FIA, the application does not constitute bail plea.
After the NAB amendments, this is the first case that has been transferred to the FIA. The case must be looked at under the FIA rules, the prosecutor said.
The accused should either make an amendment to the existing bail application or submit a fresh plea, the prosecutor further added.
After hearing the arguments, the court declared the bail's application ineffective and as a result, the PTI founder lawyer Salman Safdar submitted a new bail application.
The PTI also gave preliminary arguments on the couple's post-arrest bail application.
Subsequently, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till September 26.

Reserved seats can't be allocated to PTI under amended law, says Tarar after SC verdict
September 23, 2024
ISLAMABAD: Undeterred by the Supreme Court’s detailed verdict in the reserved seats case, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Monday reiterated the government’s stance that the reserved seats cannot be allocated to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under the amended Election Act.
He made these remarks while addressing a press conference hours after the apex court issued a detailed verdict on July 12 order declaring the former ruling party eligible for seats in assemblies.
“Legal question still remains in place […] the detailed judgment didn’t interpret how the reserved seats will be allocated to the party as per the current regulations,” the minister said.
He was referring to the Elections (Second Amendment) Act, 2024 that was enacted to circumvent the SC ruling on the reserved seats as it barred independent candidates from joining any political party after the specific time.
The law minister said Articles 51 and 106 of the Constitution warrant that independents will have to join a political party within three days of the publication in the official Gazette of the names of the returned candidates.
Tarar said parliament has amended the Sections 66 and 104 (a) of the Election Act, which is now the existing law in the country.
Referring to the PTI-backed returned candidates, the minister said the independents, who have already joined the Sunni Ittehad Council, cannot join any other party, adding that parliament is fully empowered to make or amend laws.
In its 70-page judgement issued today, the apex court termed the PTI "a political party" and eligible for the seats' quota. It stressed that the lack of an electoral symbol does not affect its constitutional right to take part in elections.
The PTI is a political party and won seats in the national and provincial legislatures in the general elections, the court remarked, while directing the country's top electoral body to notify the former ruling party's members on the reserved seats.
"The ECP's March 1 decision is contradictory to the Constitution and has no legal value," the apex court said while referring to the body's decision wherein it had declined the Sunni Ittehad Council's (SIC) plea for allocation of reserved seats and had instead decided to give them to other political parties on the principle of proportional representation.
Additionally, the court also declared the returning officers' (ROs) act of mentioning PTI candidates as independent candidates in Form-33 "unconstitutional and unlawful".
Meanwhile, Tarar remarked the interpretation of Constitution should not be done in such a way that the “structure itself changes”.
Raising questions over the judgment, the law minister said PTI, which benefitted from the detailed judgement, as a ‘political party’ didn’t seek the reserved seats. “It [PTI] neither move Election Commission, nor Peshawar High Court,” he added.
Giving details of the case, the minister said that the Election Commission’s move — denying the PTI-backed independent lawmakers reserved seats in the assemblies — was upheld by Peshawar High Court (PHC).
“It was never the case of MNAs [members of National Assembly] that they belong to PTI,” Tarar clarified, pointing out that they submitted their affidavits of allegiance to SIC.
“The case had only two points — whether SIC can get reserved seats or not?” However, he maintained, the matter will be settled as per the Constitution of Pakistan.
PTI asks ECP to notify 38 MNAs
On the other hand, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has demanded the electoral watchdog to declare the 38 PTI-backed MNAs as member of the opposition party in line with the apex court's reserved seats verdict.
Urging the ECP to decide the matter of reserved seats allocation, Barrister Gohar said the reserved seats were the PTI's right.
He said the ECP has "compromised" on its independent status. adding that the top court's verdict also ruled that electoral body cannot deny the reserved seats to the PTI.
Barrister Gohar further said that the 40 of the 41 PTI lawmakers had already submitted their affidavits to the ECP but the electoral body remained undecided on the matter despite holding marathon meetings.

Judges bring spat out in the open
Nasir Iqbal
September 24, 2024
• In detailed ruling on reserved seats, senior puisne judge takes exception to two colleagues’ remarks in minority judgement
• Justice Shah grills ECP, says it should not have acted as primary complainant
• Judgement says court more concerned with electorate’s rights than a political party’s
• In separate note, Justice Afridi asks ECP to revisit notifications in light of verdict
• Justice Shah boycotts panel to form benches over ‘unfettered and arbitrary discretion’ vested in CJP
• Legal experts hope this isn’t another ‘Sajjad Ali Shah moment’
ISLAMABAD: A bitter spat between ‘brother judges’, which had been simmering for quite some time, came to a head on Monday as differences between them were reflected in a judgement issued by the top court — something many legal experts termed ‘unprecedented’.
In a 70-page verdict regarding the reserved seats, senior puisne judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah responded to the observations made by Justice Aminuddin Khan and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan in their dissenting notes.
“We feel constrained to observe, with a heavy heart, that our two learned colleagues in the minority […] have made certain observations in their dissenting judgement of Aug 3, 2024, which do not behove judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the highest court of the land,” regretted Justice Shah.
“We take no issue with their having and expressing the view that, in their understanding, our order dated 12 July 2024 is not in accordance with the Constitution, as members of a bench of this court, or any court, can legitimately differ on issues of fact and law […] However, the manner in which they have expressed their disagreement falls short of the courtesy and restraint required of judges of the superior courts,” Justice Shah said.
“What is more disquieting is that […] they appear to have gone beyond the parameters of propriety by warning the 39 plus 41 (80) returned candidates and urging the commission not to comply with the majority order […] Such observations undermine the integrity of the highest institution of justice in the country and seem to constitute an attempt to obstruct the process of the court and the administration of justice,” the judge lamented.
“The judges need not always see eye to eye and may ultimately disagree, but the possibility of disagreement does not absolve them from engaging in a free and frank discussion before rendering their final opinion,” Justice Shah observed.
“Egos may be bruised, tempers tempted, yet all must pursue the process with respect and civility,” he suggested.
In their dissenting verdict on the issue of reserved seats, both judges had held that the superstructure created by July 12 majority judgement did not come within the ambit of the jurisdiction vested in the Supreme Court, or in the Constitution.
Calls for restraint
“For the first time in Pakistan’s judicial history, minority judges had asked institutions not to implement the majority judgement, thus inviting chaos in the country,” commented a senior counsel on condition of anonymity.
The judges should show restraint instead of commenting against each other since their conduct adversely affects the prestige and dignity of the court, he regretted.
Former additional attorney general (AAG) Tariq Mehmood Khokhar was of the view that the ‘internecine strife’ in the top judges was not without precedent.
In Nov 1997, during the PML-N government, two parallel courts convened simultaneously in the Supreme Court building, in crude opposition to each other.
“Much ugliness followed, including the ruling PML-N thugs and goons storming the Sajjad Ali Shah court, without any intervention by the security personnel,” he recalled.
“It is happening again during another PML-N premiership,” Mr Khokhar said, expressing hope that this was not the beginning of a ‘Sajjad Ali Shah moment’.
For Advocate Taimur Malik, an expert in international law, the observations in the detailed judgement regarding two fellow judges were unprecedented, unusual and very significant. These observations highlight that the majority judges have strong reservations regarding the note authored by two judges and its adverse effect on the implementation of the full court’s majority judgement, he said.
The judgement penned by Justice Shah also underscored the majority of the judges did not take lightly any attempts to undermine the sanctity of judicial decisions, he said.
Justice Shah’s letter
Shortly after the judgement was released, Justice Shah wrote a three-page letter expressing his displeasure with recent changes to the bench-forming committee, in light of a recently-promulgated ordinance. He said that he could not participate in meetings of the three-judge committee, which had been reformed under the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Ordinance 2024.
The Sept 21 letter of CJP Qazi Faez Isa to the court’s registrar seeking an explanation of how the Sept 14 clarification order by Justice Shah was uploaded on the top court’s website also showed hinted at infighting among ‘brother judges’.
Through Monday’s letter, Justice Shah suggested that until the constitutional validity of the amendments was determined by a full court, or judges of the apex court resolved to act upon the amendments in a full court meeting on the administrative side, or the earlier committee was restored, he would not attend the meeting. On Sept 20, moments after the federal government promulgated the ordinance, the CJP had changed the composition of the committee by substituting Justice Munib Akhtar with Justice Aminuddin Khan.
In his letter, Justice Shah observed that independence, transparency and collegiality required the CJP to raise an immediate alarm and concern on the promulgation of the ordinance in the light of court’s celebrated pronouncement in the 2024 Raja Amer case and to convene a full court meeting for deliberations on the matter, rather than hurriedly acquiescing to it and quietly reconstituting the existing committee without any lawful justification and reasons.
The Supreme Court had held in the Raja Amer case that Article 191 vested the initial and primary power to make rules for regulating its practice and procedure in the Supreme Court, he wrote.
“I am afraid, any proceedings taken or decisions made by the reconstituted committee will […] undermine the integrity of the highest institution of justice in the country as well as the public confidence in the decisions made by the benches constituted by it,” he feared.
The judge also appeared concerned over the amendment vesting unfettered and arbitrary discretion in the CJP to determine the composition of the committee. Further, the constitutional conditionality of the very act of promulgating the amending ordinance also requires a judicial determination as no urgency has been spelt out that necessitated its promulgation, he said, adding that not to mention the timing of the new ordinance in the midst of the current constitutional crises.
Justice Shah also pointed out that the legislation did not provide for necessary reconstitution of the existing committee and hence, the earlier committee could have continued even after the amendment.
But within hours of the promulgation of the ordinance, it was notified that the committee had been reconstituted and no reasons were given as to why the second senior-most judge, Justice Akhtar, was removed despite his availability.
Furthermore, no reasons were given why the next senior most judge (Justice Yahya Afridi) was ignored and instead, the fourth senior most judge was nominated as a member of the committee. Such unfortunate cherry-picking and undemocratic display of one-man show are precisely what the 2023 act tried to discourage, he added.

Detailed verdict reignites debate on SC powers
Malik Asad
September 24, 2024
• Akram Sheikh says court was not dealing with ordinary civil case
ISLAMABAD: The detailed judgement in the reserved seats case has reignited a debate about the powers of the Supreme Court to do ‘complete justice’ by invoking Article 187: which is usually used in cases being heard under Article 184 or the suo motu jurisdiction.
According to the Pakistan Bar Council vice chairman, the exercise of appellate jurisdiction with the ‘suo moto’ powers was a ‘novel precedent based on popular will of the people’.
However, the eight judges in the majority judgement authored by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah spelt out the reason why the constitutional provision for complete justice under Article 187 was invoked. The provision is normally applied in the suo moto jurisdiction.
The judgement said that “in exercising its appellate jurisdiction under Article 185 of the Constitution, this court cannot go beyond the pleadings. We are afraid, this contention is misconceived. It results from a misunderstanding of treating election disputes as mere civil disputes between two private parties, similar to other civil disputes.”
Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Farooq H. Naek said that the Supreme Court usually exercises powers vested in Article 187 in suo motu cases to provide ‘complete justice’.
However, the Supreme Court “in its wisdom has rewritten the Constitution by overriding Article 4 that provides the right of individuals to be dealt with in accordance with the law”, the PBC vice chairman said. The independent candidates voluntarily joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) under Article 63, but the apex court changed their party without hearing them by invoking Article 187, he added.
“This is a judgement passed under Article 187 to provide complete justice, but unfortunately this judgement has not been passed in accordance with the doctrine of complete justice,” he claimed.
The veteran lawyer said the courts were “always legally bound to do justice within the parameters of the law and Constitution and not on the basis of the perception and popular will of the people”.
The judgement, however, said the court could invoke Article 187(1) to do complete justice in any case when there is no “specific provision of law that covers or addresses the matter or issue involved”.
Legal expert Raja Inam Ameen Minhas opined that the judgement also discussed matters that were not part of the SIC appeal.
He said if the bench intended to go beyond the jurisdiction, it should have put the parties concerned on notice. According to him, this judgement has set a new precedent as it extended relief to a political party whose application for impleadment was pending before the apex court.
“The procedural formality of first accepting PTI’s application and then granting it the relief does not carry much weight where the court’s concern is the protection of the right of vote of the people (the electorate) guaranteed under Articles 17(2) and 19 of the Constitution, more than the right of any political party—whether it be SIC or PTI or any other party,” the judgement said.
According to former deputy attorney general Raja Khalid Mehmood Khan, this was a populist decision as the apex court could have dismissed, accepted, or partially allowed an appeal under Article 185 of the Constitution.
Advocate Mohammad Akram Sheikh, on the other hand, said that “while exercising Article 185, the Supreme Court is not denuded from its powers vested in Article 184 or 187”.
He agreed with the court observations that the reserved seats case was not a “routine civil suit but the court was dealing with the matter of public importance”.

Poor governance, law and order in KP increase people’s problems: Amir Muqam
September 23, 2024
Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam on Monday said that the deteriorating governance and law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa negatively impacted people’s lives besides marred development works.
KP has lately been witnessing a rise in terror attacks across the province, especially targeting security forces. A report released by an Islamabad-based think-tank, Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), earlier this month said 29 out of the 59 terrorist attacks reported across the country in August took place in KP.
A day ago, a policeman escorting a convoy of foreign diplomats was martyred after a roadside explosion in Swat. The delegation, including diplomats from 12 countries, was returning to Islamabad from Malam Jabba when their vehicle was targeted. The foreign dignitaries remained unhurt but six policemen were injured.
Muqam said that the imposition of the governor’s rule was a constitutional provision that would be considered as a last option for the sake of the people if the ongoing situation does not improve in KP.
While expressing concern over the law and order situation in the southern districts and merged areas of KP, Muqam mentioned the Swat blast.
“The blast was a deep-rooted conspiracy aimed at damaging the country’s image, he said.
“Empty slogans”
The federal minister said that KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur was focused on agitation and public rallies rather than addressing governance and law and order issues in the province.
Muqam said that police in KP were incited to protest for the first time making it unsafe for people to leave their homes after night, especially in southern districts and merged areas of the province.
He criticised the KP government’s poor performance, especially in the higher education sector in the province, where about 25 public sector universities are operating without vice-chancellors (VCs), marring education standards and research works immensely.
He said that instead of appointing VCs, the KP CM had announced plans to sell university properties which would lead to economic collapse for these cash-starved educational institutions in the province.
The federal minister noted recent accusations of malpractices, nepotism, and corruption among provincial ministers and advisers, stating that the public now sees the CM’s statements as empty slogans and is mocking them.
After PTIs failed Lahore show, he said that the KP CM intentionally delayed the convoy to the event, predicting similar outcomes for the upcoming planned shows of PTI in Mianwali and Rawalpindi.
Muqam praised the people of Lahore for distancing themselves from the “divisiveness, agitation, and hollow slogans’ politics of PTI”, indicating that the poor turnout at the Lahore gathering strongly reflected the growing discontent of masses with PTI leadership due to their “stubbornness and rhetoric approach”.
Commenting on CM Gandapur’s offer to talk to the Afghan government to improve the law and order situation in his province, Muqam said that he had “no mandate to negotiate directly with the Afghan government on an issue, which is the federal government’s responsibility”.
He mentioned the sacrifices of the people of KP in combating terrorism and reiterated hopes for peace from the provincial government, which had failed to address terrorism effectively.
He also said that KP CM had not made any solid efforts to mediate a peace deal among warring tribes in Parachinar in Kurram district where people were martyred and injured in fighting on land disputes.
On judicial reforms, Muqam said that the government advocates constitutional amendments through consensus to provide speedy justice to litigants.
He added that the judiciary is independent and will adjudicate cases against the PTI founder charged with corruption and rule out the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) for anyone.

PTI Lahore rally: KP CM Gandapur booked for attempted murder, violence
By Mian Abid
September 24, 2024
LAHORE: The Lahore police filed a fresh case against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa firebrand Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur under 13 provisions, including the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), for resorting to violence near Sialkot Interchange while en route to the provincial capital to attend the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Sept 21 power show.
The PTI held a rally in Lahore, which suddenly came to an end after the police raided the stage and turned off the microphone and lights which forced the PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and other party leaders to leave the site.
The police and district administration took action after the PTI rally ignored the 6pm deadline specified in the no-objection certificate (NOC) and continued their show.
CM Gandapur, who was leading a convoy from KP, failed to arrive at the venue by the time of the deadline’s expiry. However, he managed to reach the venue and briefly address the party workers and supporters.
His convoy reportedly includes rescue 1122 ambulances and heavy machinery to remove any hurdles on their way.
Later, videos emerged on social media showing the KP chief minister breaking the window of a truck with his rifle.
Subsequently, a first information report (FIR) was registered at Manawa Police Station with Gandapur being charged under 13 provisions, including attempted murder.
The FIR stated that the chief executive was leading an armed mob at Sialkot Interchange, claiming that the mob attempted to set the vehicles on fire, parked at the toll plaza, on orders of the politician.
According to the FIR, an armed mob resisted police with an AK-47, while CM Gandapur, Shahid Khatak, and others moved ahead during the riot. Amid the rampage, two policemen also sustained injuries, the FIR added.
The development came a day after Gandapur categorically refused to apologise for his "vitriol" during the Islamabad rally on September 8, stating, "I owe no apology for any wrongdoing, nor am I a slave to the Punjab government or anyone else."
"Why should I apologise, and for what reason, as this apology thing is being repeated again and again," slammed CM Gandapur while addressing the PTI workers via video link. "You should seek an apology from me and also for arresting the party founder, Imran Khan."
He then announced that his party would hold its next public gathering in Mianwali next Sunday, followed by a power show in Rawalpindi.

Israeli aggression and ‘narrow’ interests’ of West block global progress, Syrian envoy tells UN
September 24, 2024
NEW YORK CITY: Syria said it voted against a “Pact for the Future,” which was adopted by a majority of UN member states on Sunday, on the grounds that it does not go far enough in terms of plans to reform the organization.
The pact, which received the backing of 143 of 193 member states in the vote, aims to rebuild trust in the UN and its ability to tackle global crises.
But Qusay Al-Dahhak, Syria’s permanent representative to the UN told delegates attending the “Summit for the Future” at the organization’s headquarters in New York on Monday that its mechanisms and systems need to evolve away from serving the “narrow interests” of a handful of Western states.
He said the brighter future desired by those who backed the pact, one that best serves all member states and their peoples, would only be achieved through “radical change.”
“(This will require) some Western countries to abandon the mentality of the past and their ambitions of hegemony and colonization,” Al-Dahhak said.
Though he did not name any specific Western states, he said that they should “cease attempting to impose their will on other peoples and respect their independent, national choices.”
He denounced the “illegal measures” he said have been taken by the West that have deprived Syrians of their future, undermined their legitimate choices and prevented them from accessing their own national wealth, but said Syrians are nonetheless “determined to move forward and build their own future.”
The US, the EU, Canada, Australia and Switzerland imposed sanctions on Syria in response to the actions of President Bashar Assad and his regime since the start of the civil war in the country in 2011.
Al-Dahhak said his country looks forward to a future based on dialog and diplomacy between nations, and on the promotion of multilateral action and the upholding of the principles of the UN Charter, which he said will not be best served by the pact in its current form.
“Hence the need to take immediate and serious measures to develop multilateral mechanisms and structures and to reinforce them to strengthen re-participation away from the policies of exclusion and the narrow interests of some Western states,” he added.
The envoy also condemned the “ongoing Israeli occupation of Arab territories in Palestine, Syria and Lebanon” and Israel’s continued “acts of aggression, crimes of genocide and ethnic cleansing,” which he said amounted to a “grave violation of international law and the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.”
Referencing the pact agreed on Sunday, he said transgressions by Israeli authorities also represent a major obstacle and hinder access to the “common future we all seek.” He said there was a need to unite and intensify the UN efforts to confront Israel’s regional aggression and its occupation of land belonging to other states.
Al-Dahhak also vowed Syria would join other nations in calling for reforms of global financial institutions to “guarantee participation of developing countries in the global economic decision making,” which he said would help to alleviate global debt.

Jordanian minister calls for more-inclusive global development and end to war in Gaza
ALI YOUNES
September 24, 2024
WASHINGTON: Jordan’s minister of planning and international development on Monday urged the international community to take cooperative action to tackle the critical challenges that threaten efforts to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Zeina Toukan told the Summit of the Future at the UN headquarters in New York that the “clock is ticking” and nations must work together to ensure the goals are achieved by the target date, which is just six years away.
UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015. It provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for all peoples of the world through the achievement of 17 goals, including an end to poverty, improved public health and education, greater equality, and economic growth.
Toukan said global development will come through cooperation between countries, including the creation of an improved multilateral system through which all nations can achieve and benefit from development. Trust between nations is key to cooperation and the creation of such a system, she added.
To aid growth, the international community must do more to encourage innovation and creativity, Toukan said. She also called for the reform of the international financial system to make it more equitable, rather than one that hinders the economic growth of some nations.
Highlighting the important role of young people in the development of their nations, she said: “Youth deserves a better future: a future of justice, peace and opportunities.”
She added that the participation of young people in the public affairs of their nations, and internationally, is important for the well-being of the entire global system.
The international community must address the challenges of today to create a better tomorrow, Toukan said. She welcomed the adoption of a new “global digital compact,” which is part of the Pact for the Future, as a “milestone” that will help nations to provide better opportunities for their citizens by integrating the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, into their economies. The compact commits governments to upholding international law and human rights online, and taking concrete steps to ensure digital spaces are safe and secure.
Turning to the conflict in Gaza, Toukan denounced “Israel’s barbaric war on the Palestinian people” and called for it to end. She described the resultant crisis in the territory as a “human catastrophe” and a prime example of the plights that affect the most vulnerable peoples around the globe.
She said since the war between Israel and Hamas began on Oct. 7 last year, Israeli forces have killed more than 41,000 people in Gaza, the majority of whom were women and children.
“The vast destruction and forced displacement is a testament to the brutality of this war,” Toukan added. Israel “is creating a lost generation deprived of peace and hope” and facing “lost opportunity,” she said.
The only way forward in efforts to bring peace and stability in the region is the creation of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, Toukan added.
She urged the international community to avoid double standards, and to do more to help end the conflict and ensure adherence by all sides to international laws and UN resolutions.

Humanity needs dialog to become aware of dangers to international peace: Lebanese MP
September 24, 2024
LONDON: The whole of humanity urgently needs dialog to become aware of the dangers that are threatening international peace and security following the erosion of the international system, a member of the Lebanese parliament said on Monday.
Addressing the UN General Assembly’s Summit of the Future on behalf of Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati — who canceled his trip due to the escalating situation in Lebanon — MP Bahia Hariri said that effort was required to reinstate trust in the international system.
“The Summit of the Future is taking place at a time that is ever so sensitive,” Hariri said.
“The whole of humanity urgently needs dialog to call ourselves into question and to become aware of the dangers that are threatening international peace and security after the erosion of the international system, violence, (and) lack of respect for values and conventions. In response to this, we require efforts to reinstate trust in this system.”
Her comments came after Israeli strikes killed more than 350 people in Lebanon on Monday, including more than 60 women and children. It was the deadliest barrage since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.
The summit represents an opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance. It also aims to reaffirm existing commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Charter.
Hariri said the Lebanese government “welcomes the efforts of the secretary-general and the United Nations to prepare this summit through the dialogs being addressed and the strategy and the approach to it in place since 2015; the 2030 sustainable development agenda; the Paris Agreement on climate change; the Addis Ababa action plan for sustainable development; the declaration made on the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in 2020; our common agenda in 2021; the statement by the secretary-general in 2022; the summit on the transformation of education; the fight against the spread of pandemics in 2023; and the SDG Summit.”
Hariri added: “All of these measures should reinstate trust. In the past we talked about a new generation every 10 years. The Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati is looking at levels of trust in Lebanese civil society and in scientific institutions and the youth.
“And we wish to underscore the importance of the secretary-general’s position on debating the results of this exceptional summit with civil society and with youth organizations.
“We hope that the young people of the city of Beirut will be the first to discuss the results of this Summit of the Future.”

Iran Calls On Holding AnIslamic Summit To Discuss The Zionist Aggression On Lebanon
SEPTEMBER 23, 2024
PM Muhammed S. Al-Sudani called for holding an Islamic summit to discuss the Zionist aggression on Lebanon.
"In light of the recent developments in brotherly Lebanon, the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people stand firmly for justice, truth, and principles, based on the statement of the Office of the Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Al-Sistani," according to a statement by the PM Media Office - received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
The statement highlighted, "His Eminence has called for all efforts to be made to stop the aggression and assist Lebanon and its people in their brave resistance to the criminal Zionist attacks, which have resulted in the martyrdom of hundreds of its honorable citizens and the injury of thousands of innocent civilians."
"This stance is not new from the Supreme Religious Authority in Najaf, which has long expressed its wise understanding of the core issue which is the existence of the Zionist entity, its occupation of Palestine, and its attempts to sow discord and expand conflict in the region. Our government's position has been clear from the outset, unequivocally rejecting the brutal aggression against Gaza and all of steadfast Palestine, as well as rejecting the Zionist entity's attacks on the sovereignty of certain countries in the region," added the statement.
PM Al-Sudani stressed, "We have consistently called upon major powers, international organizations, and all Arab and Islamic countries to make efforts to stop the criminal Zionist war machine and Iraq now calls for an urgent summit of Arab and Islamic leaders (currently in New York) to hold an Islamic summit to discuss the repercussions of the Zionist aggression on our peaceful people in Lebanon. This summit aims to coordinate joint efforts to halt criminal behavior and rally global opinion, which has never been more aware of the historical injustice against Palestinians and the current suffering in peaceful Lebanon."
"On behalf of Iraq, both its government and people, we declare our commitment to organizing efforts and delivering aid, combining official and popular efforts in response to the call and guidance of the Supreme Religious Authority to alleviate the suffering of our brothers in Lebanon by establishing an airbridge and a land bridge, facilitating the delivery of fuel to power the hospitals and service institutions in Lebanon. Additionally, Iraqi hospitals will be open to receive the injured and wounded, and we will do everything to strengthen Lebanon’s resilience in the face of the ongoing aggressions and terrorist crimes committed by the Zionist entity," included in the statement.

Islamic Jihad Movement condemns attacks on Lebanon as war crimes
23 Sep 2024
GAZA - SABA: The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine has issued a strong warning regarding the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which have led to numerous civilian casualties since Monday morning.
In a press statement, the movement characterized the assault as a "clear war crime," reflecting what they describe as the fascist nature of the Israeli entity.
The movement criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting that the escalation of aggression is an attempt to divert attention from internal crises facing his government.
It condemned the international community's silence on these attacks, highlighting the potential repercussions for regional stability.
Expressing solidarity with Hezbollah and the Lebanese people, the Islamic Jihad Movement called for action from Arab and Islamic nations against these violations.
Jihad also criticized the US administration for its role in enabling ongoing violence against both Palestinians and Lebanese.
The movement urged the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take immediate measures to halt the aggression, including expelling Israeli ambassadors and ending normalization efforts with Israel.

Lino Lakes council censures member for applauding anti-Muslim email
By Louis Krauss
SEPTEMBER 24, 2024
The Lino Lakes City Council voted Monday night to censure one of its members for applauding an anti-Muslim email that called Islam “our declared enemy” in response to a news article about a proposed housing development that includes a mosque.
Wearing an American flag necktie and at one point holding up a copy of the Quran, Council Member Chris Lyden objected to the resolution to censure him, calling the issue “so trivial.”
“There’s never a good time to sell your soul attempting to be politically correct,” he said near the start of his objections that lasted about 10 minutes.
In the end, the City Council voted 3-1 to censure Lyden. Council Member Michael Ruhland was the lone no vote, and Lyden did not participate in the vote. The censure distances the city from Lyden’s response, which the resolution says “could be interpreted by some” as endorsing anti-Muslim opinions in the original email.
“The response neither reflects the views of the City or the views of the City Council,” the resolution reads. “The Council disavows the email response in its entirety.”
On Aug. 4, a person writing as “Sean, USA” sent Lyden a lengthy email about a New York Times story on the controversial Madinah Lakes development proposal. The development would bring a “Muslim-friendly” housing development to Lino Lakes that includes a mosque. The housing component recently stalled when the City Council enacted a one-year moratorium on residential developments.
The emailer sent the anti-Muslim letter to the story’s author, to Lyden and to members of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). The email claimed there was “no such thing” as Islamophobia.
Lyden responded using his city email account, writing, “Might be the best email I have ever received!”
CAIR demanded Lyden resign for the response, which the organization said was endorsing Islamophobia. Lyden rejected the allegations of racism and said he takes issue “with the CAIR organization. Period.”
Although Ruhland voted against the resolution, he said that was in order to continue working on it, and that he took issue with Lyden using his city email to respond.
“My biggest issue is I feel he violated the code of conduct by handling personal opinions and personal business matters with city resources,” Ruhland said.
The resolution to censure Lyden was brought forward by Mayor Rob Rafferty and Council Member Dale Stoesz, the agenda packet indicates.
The Madinah Lakes project, which was recently stalled, has drawn backlash from some city residents who say it would overburden the town’s infrastructure, including its water supply, and that it would diminish Lino Lakes’ small-town feel.
The opponents have also raised concerns about the 2013 theft-by-swindle conviction on the record for the project’s developer Faraaz Yussuf, whose official name is Faraaz Mohammed.
Many others, including members of the Muslim community from Blaine and elsewhere, have come out in support of the project, and say the opposition is rooted in Islamophobia.
Jaylani Hussein, CAIR-MN’s executive director, continued to argue that Lyden should resign.
“You need to resign, and the rest of you need to hold him accountable,” Hussein said.

35K+ People Call on Missouri Gov to Block Execution of Imam Marcellus ‘Khaliifah’ Williams, Scheduled for Tomorrow
September 23, 2024
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is intensifying its efforts to stop the execution of Imam Marcellus “Khaliifah” Williams, set for tomorrow in Missouri. Today, CAIR set a new goal of 50,000 calls and messages to Missouri Governor Mike Parson, urging him to block the execution and commute Williams’ sentence.
More than 35,000 people have already signed CAIR’s Action Alert. CAIR now aims to mobilize 50,000 voices to call for justice, urging the public to take action before it is too late.
Imam Williams has consistently maintained his innocence, and critical DNA evidence that did not match him has raised serious concerns about the fairness of his conviction. With significant new evidence and widespread public concern, CAIR has called on the governor to take immediate action to ensure that an irreversible mistake is not made.
“It is unconscionable to allow an execution to proceed when credible evidence of innocence exists. Governor Parson has the power to prevent a wrongful execution, and we are calling on everyone to join this urgent action. No one should be put to death when questions of guilt remain, particularly in a case fraught with racial bias and systemic failure.”
Williams’ case has drawn attention to the racial disparities in death penalty cases and the potential for wrongful convictions, particularly against people of color.

Harry's US visa application will stay private, judge rules
George Wright
September 24, 2024
The Duke of Sussex's US visa application should remain private despite him admitting taking drugs in his memoir, a judge has ruled.
Prince Harry wrote of using marijuana, cocaine and psychedelic mushrooms in his memoir Spare, which was released in January 2023.
A lawsuit, from the conservative Heritage Foundation, sought to compel the government to release the records to show whether drug use was disclosed.
But US judge Carl Nichols ruled on Monday that "the public does not have a strong interest in disclosure of the duke's immigration records".
"Like any foreign national, the duke has a legitimate privacy interest in his immigration status," he added.
Prince Harry moved to the US in January 2020 after announcing that he and his wife, Meghan Markle, would step back from royal duties.
In a lawsuit last year, the prominent Washington DC-based think tank argued that "widespread and continuous" media coverage of Prince Harry's admitted drug use called into question whether the government properly vetted the duke and followed proper procedures when it admitted him into the country.
Application forms for US visas specifically ask about current and past drug use.
Drug use can lead to non-immigrant and immigrant visa applications being rejected, although immigration officers have discretion to make a final decision based on a number of factors.
The Heritage Foundation's lawsuit argued that US law "generally renders such a person inadmissible for entry" to the country.
In his memoir, the duke said cocaine "didn't do anything for me", adding: "Marijuana is different, that actually really did help me."
But Judge Nichols said the public's interest in disclosure of Prince Harry's immigration records is "outweighed by the duke's privacy interest".

Malaysia draws 4.5 million Muslim tourists, generating RM14.7b in revenue last year
24 Sep 2024
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Malaysia recorded the arrival of 4.5 million Muslim tourists, generating RM14.7 billion last year in revenue, according to Islamic Tourist Centre (ITC) director-general Nizran Noordin.
Speaking while appearing as a guest on Bernama TV ‘Apa Khabar Malaysia’ programme today, he said this proved that Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality have significant economic potential in the country.
According to Nizran, based on data, the global population includes two billion Muslims, with 1.1 billion residing in member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an intergovernmental organisation with 57 Muslim countries worldwide.
In addition, he said there are 255 million Muslims in ASEAN countries and 350 million living in countries where there are a minority.
“The market is huge. Mastercard-CrescentRating (Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI)) projected that in 2028, the travel market will be led by 230 million Muslims, generating spending of USD225 billion (RM987 billion),” he said.
Nizran said to promote the sector, ITC provides Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition for accommodations and approximately 220 Muslim-friendly tourist guides.
Meanwhile, he said ITC is also organising Islamic Tourism Month (ITM) programme from Aug 16 to Sept 30, offering accommodation deals, travel packages, mosque tourism, beauty and spa services, events, and exhibitions, among other things.
More information on the programme can be obtained at www.itm.itc.gov.my. — Bernama

Today I Learned: The Oldest Mosque in the Philippines Was Built During the Byzantine Empire
24 Sep 2024
The Philippines has a rich Muslim identity that predates Spanish colonialism and Western Christianity by roughly 200 years. In the six centuries between the introduction of Islam to the country and today, Islamic traditions persist. It could be argued that Islam, after all, was the first monotheistic established in the Philippines, considering that it had been introduced around the 14th century by Arab and Gujarati traders.
Being a Muslim outpost in what is an eminently Catholic nation, Mindanao, in particular, with Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Lanao del Sur, is home to some of the most enduring symbols of the Islamic faith in the country. The area was once a hub for commerce and trade, as well as fraternalism among different cultures and religions.
An integral part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Tawi-Tawi is where the oldest mosque in the Philippines, and Southeast Asia stands. Found in Simunul, the Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Mosque commemorates the propagation of the Islamic faith. Marked as a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the mosque. In many ways, its stature reflects just how deep Islamic roots are in not just the Philippines, but all of the Southeast Asian region.
A Short History of the Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Mosque
According to local folklore, it was first built in 1380 AD by the Arab trader and missionary Sheikh Karimul Makhdum. To put things into context, this means that it was first built and existed at the same time as the Byzantine Empire.
An Arab Sunni Sufi Muslim, Sheikh Karimul Makhdum came to Malacca and would eventually find himself affiliated with the Kubrawi Hamadani missionaries toward the end of the 14th century. He brought Islam to the Philippines with him. It should also be noted that he arrived 141 years before Ferdinand Magellan set foot in the Philippines.
The pillars found within the mosque were once thought to have been part of the original mosque. Hence, their status as sacred pieces to the Islamic faithful. Later on, the National Museum of the Philippines seen in the mosque stretches back to the 17th century. This means that these pillars are still the oldest known Islamic artifacts in the country.
“Legend has it there were various attempts to remove the old pillars of the mosque. For some reason, those attempts were unsuccessful. Hence, some old folks thought that those pillars were a source of blessings and people began to take pieces from them and use them as amulets,” Prof. Julkipli Wadi, dean of the Institute of Islamic Studies at the University of the Philippines, told Arab News. “That led the local government to protect the pillars with plastic glass so that people would not be able to carve pieces from them.”
When Japan invaded the Philippines, the mosque would become a casualty, with most of its pillars lost to the destruction of the war. The good news is that it would later be rebuilt in the '60s. It would undergo several renovations over the years, too.
In 1998, it was designated as a national historical landmark. 15 years later, then-President Benigno S. Aquino III would sign a Republic Act to declare it such. Six hundred forty-four years later, Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Day is celebrated annually on November 7 to celebrate his contributions.

Umno’s Nur Jazlan downplays halal cert issue in Mahkota, says Chinese voters smarter than that and ultimately not affected by it
24 Sep 2024
By Ben Tan
JOHOR BARU, Sept 24 — Johor Umno leader Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed has downplayed Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh’s recent outburst directed at DAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok over the halal certification issue, ahead of the Mahkota by-election.
He believes that it is not a new issue and was brought up by certain parties in an effort to manipulate the Chinese voters in the coming Mahkota by-election.
“So, don't be surprised if some parties try to politicise the halal certificate issue because they want to win the Malay votes, while trying to tease the sensitivities of other races.
“It is said that they want to make Chinese voters angry and finally reject BN. But what I know is that Chinese voters are smarter than that.
“If this halal certificate issue is repeated many times, the people are bound to be fed up with such outdated tactics. They know, this is all a political game to split votes,” he said in a statement posted on his official Facebook account today.
Nur Jazlan, who is an Umno Supreme Council member and the party’s Pulai division chief, said that DAP’s machinery is more than capable in managing such issues as they had done in the past campaigns when they were in the Opposition.
“After all, this halal certificate issue does not directly affect the Chinese community, especially the traders or the owners of the restaurants and eateries they operate.
“In the end, halal certification is a customer's choice as only a majority of Muslims care about the status of non-Muslim shops,” he said.
Nur Jazlan explained that Chinese voters are not indifferent to politics, but they are more interested in how to evaluate the benefits that they gain before giving support and voting.
He said the Chinese voters are practical in their choices as they place importance on a stable economy.
“I have a lot of experience with the sentiments of Chinese voters in the Pulai parliament. I see that they are not bound by the loyalty of any political party or even to DAP.
“In the ever-changing political situation, Chinese voters can change course at any time to any party that can promise profit to themselves and their people from an economic point of view,” he said, adding that it can be from any political party and not necessarily DAP.
Nur Jazlan, who is also the Dewan Negara Deputy Speaker, explained that such a scenario had happened in the previous general election where MCA was able to secure 50 per cent of the Chinese votes in the Tanjung Piai parliament.
He said this was from the Chinese voters who were not satisfied with their economic situation after the 14th general election on 2018 when the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition first took power.
“For the Mahkota by-election, the Chinese voters will certainly value whether the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate’s victory can give them better access to economic opportunities and better development planning.
“So, will Chinese voters come out en masse in Mahkota? It depends on the extent to which they see the long-term benefits offered by the DAP-backed BN candidate,” he said, adding that the Mahkota by-election will also be a big test for Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong, who was once a Kluang MP.

‘Under a spell and spirited away’: Son claims missing dad still alive but hypnotised as Kedah police search hits dead end
24 Sep 2024
BALING, Sept 24 — The family of an elderly man, Sabari Baharom, 62, did not rule out the possibility that he may have been put under a spell before being spirited away to a remote place, causing the police search operation to reach a dead end.
Sabari’s youngest son, Muhammad Amir Hakimi, 25, said the family’s intuition was strong that his father was still alive and they are worried about his poor condition after being missing for almost three weeks.
“We believe that father is still alive, he may have been hypnotised. We as a family also tried our own alternatives to meet the mosque imam and religious people to hold a Yasin reading and pray for father’s safety,” he said when contacted today.
He said that since the story of his father’s disappearance became public, many Islamic traditional healers and “medicine men” or shamans contacted him to help in the search for Sabari.
“About 15 Islamic and alternative medicine practitioners including from Sarawak and the neighbouring country, Indonesia, claim that father is still alive,” he said.
Meanwhile, Baling acting police chief DSP Charan Ai Wan, when contacted, said police are still investigating the case and there was no latest development.
“So far there has been no development... The Kedah contingent police headquarters (IPK) is also helping to investigate this case,” he said.
Previously, the media reported on Sabari’s disappearance after he was believed to have left his home in Baling in a Proton Waja car, before the burnt vehicle was found by residents in Belantik, Sik. His family was informed about it last Friday.
Sabari’s mobile phone could not be reached, while his family detected the withdrawal of a large amount of money through several transactions from one of his bank accounts, two days after his disappearance. — Bernama
