Muslims in Delhi's Uttam Nagar shower flowers on police after peaceful Eid prayers amid threats

By Nayanika Sen gupta

Heavy deployment of security personnel seen as devotees from Muslim community arrive to offer namaz on the occasion of Eid in Uttam Nagar, Delhi (HT/Sanchit Khanna)

-----------

Muslims in Delhi's Uttam Nagar, who were facing “khoonkiholi” threats after recent communal clashes, showered flower petals on police on Saturday after being able to offer prayers on the occasion of Eidul-Fitr.

Uttam Nagar has been tense after a 26-year old man died in clashes that broke out over fight over water balloon on Holi earlier this month.

A video doing the rounds on social media, which HT could independently confirm, shows two men holding a bag full of flower petals and showering those on the police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, with one individual being heard saying in the background, “The cops gave full support".

The initial clashes broke out on March 4 when an 11-year-old girl threw a water balloon that hit a Muslim woman, triggering an altercation. Tarun Kumar, 26, succumbed to injuries he received in the clashes four days later. Police have so far arrested 14 people and apprehended two minors in connection with the case.

The incident kept Uttam Nagar on edge with Muslims there alleging that religious leaders issued threats of playing “khoonkiholi” on Eid - warning of a bloodbath.

Security was heightened near the Uttam Nagar East Metro station after the Delhi high court directed the police to make adequate arrangements in the area over apprehensions of violence during Eid al-Fitr.

The high court also issued a notice to the Delhi Police and sought its response. It directed that security arrangements be maintained until the festival of Ram Navami.

A heavy deployment of Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel was in place across Hastsal village and nearby areas, with barricades set up at key entry and exit points and strict identity checks being carried out.

Only residents were being allowed access to certain stretches after verification, while the movement of outsiders is restricted, PTI news agency reported. Police teams also conducted regular foot patrols and are monitoring rooftops, narrow lanes and other sensitive pockets through CCTV cameras to prevent any untoward incident.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh said the situation is calm. "The environment here is peaceful. People offered namaz without any disturbance. We have maintained tight security in the area and are continuing routine patrols and picketing," PTI quoted him as saying, urging people not to believe rumours on social media.

Residents of Hastsal village, however, said Eid this time was not the same as the area appeared stripped of the usual festive buzz scene. “It's very unfortunate what happened. Every year, my parents sell sevvaiyyan worth ₹10,000 a day in the run-up to Eid. This year, we have been selling around ₹3,500 a day. People from nearby areas are not coming to this market out of fear,” an earlier HT report quoted 18-year-old Vaishali Kumar who stood outside her home selling sevvaiyyan, the fine vermicelli synonymous with Eid-ul-Fitr.

For 7-year-old RabiaKhanam, Eid has always meant the aroma of sevvaiyyan wafting through the lanes, bustling markets with mehendiwallahs and the frantic rush in markets with shoppers bustling for new clothes.

"There would be so much excitement... But this year, it's just not the same," she said, seated inside her home in an area where tension has lingered since the March 4 clash that claimed Kumar's life.

India says Indus Waters Treaty to remain in abeyance until Pakistan ends support to terrorism

March 20, 2026

India has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan will remain in abeyance until Islamabad ends its support to terrorism. India’s Permanent Representative to U.N. P. Harish said Pakistan must uphold the sanctity of human life before raising treaty concerns, calling it a global epicentre of terror. He said India signed the 1960 treaty in good faith but Pakistan undermined it through wars and terror attacks.

India suspended the pact after last year’s gruesome Pahalgam attack. Harish also said India’s attempt to discuss treaty modifications amid technological and environmental changes was rejected by Pakistan. Speaking at a U.N. event to mark World Water Day, Harish said India remains committed to expanding access to safe water, highlighting progress under the JalJeevan Mission.

Türkiye condemns Israeli attacks on worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque during Eid holiday

SedaSevencan

20.03.2026

Türkiye on Friday “strongly” condemned Israeli actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, accusing Israeli forces of attacking Muslims seeking to worship at the site – one of Islam’s holiest places – during a Muslim holiday (Eid).

“On a day like Eid al-Fitr, when unity, peace and brotherhood are most deeply experienced, this attack on civilians gathered for worship is clearly contrary to freedom of belief and human dignity,” Burhanettin Duran, Türkiye’s communications chief, said on Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

“This act of barbarity by Israel, which flouts law, principles, and values, has been added as yet another entry to its pages of shame,” he added.

Türkiye will maintain a firm stance against any violations targeting the status and sanctity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Duran vowed.

Bangladesh marks Eid with prayers for peace and end to war

21 Mar 2026

The main Eid-ul-Fitr congregation at the National Eidgah in Dhaka has concluded with a prayer for peace and an end to the war in the Middle East that erupted during Ramadan.

After leading the prayer on Saturday morning, Mufti Muhammad Abdul Malek, khatib of the BaitulMukarram National Mosque, made a special supplication for the protection of people affected by conflict and unrest around the world.

Mufti Malek asked for those facing oppression to be moved to safety and prayed for the ability to stand beside people devastated by war and support them.

He then moved towards crowds gathered beyond the VVIP security cordon and shook hands with people there, as many began calling out “Eid Mubarak”.

The premier was seen moving along the bamboo security barrier, greeting worshippers from the other side, while the crowd thickened around three sides of the enclosure.

He continued exchanging greetings as he moved from the southern side towards the north, through which he later left the Eidgah ground.

"I always come here because there are prayer facilities for women,” she said. “I prayed alongside everyone and prayed for everyone."

In a brief speech before the prayer, Administrator Milton said the DNCC had tried its best to make good arrangements for everyone, saying if there were any deficiencies, steps would be taken to address them in future to ensure everyone can offer prayers in greater comfort.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar estimated that the Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri prayer at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta was attended by more than 500,000 people. According to Nasaruddin, the congregation overflowed into the courtyard.

Nasaruddin mentioned that the main building of Istiqlal Mosque could facilitate more than 250,000 people. "Those in the lower levels could not even get in, so it's likely more than 500,000 (congregants)," said Nasaruddin after the Eid prayer on Saturday, March 21, 2026.

Nasaruddin also called on the people to be grateful for being able to celebrate Eid in Indonesia, which he deemed the best among other countries.

Nasaruddin claimed that even foreigners also enjoy celebrating Eid in Indonesia. "It's peaceful, there are no threats," said the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque.

Several officials attended the Eid prayer at Istiqlal Mosque. Among them were Vice President Gibran RakabumingRaka and the Chair of the People's Consultative Assembly, Ahmad Muzani.

This year's Eid prayer at Istiqlal Mosque was not attended by President PrabowoSubianto, as he opted to visit disaster-affected areas. He performed the Eid al-Fitr prayer at Darussalam Mosque, Aceh Tamiang, which is located in temporary housing for Sumatra flood and landslide victims at the end of last year.

Prabowo was accompanied by several state officials when performing the Eid prayer in Aceh. Among them were Aceh Governor MuzakirManaf, State Secretary PrasetyoHadi, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, National Police Chief General ListyoSigitPrabowo, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy IndraWijaya.

Teddy said that Prabowo visited Aceh Tamiang during this Eid moment to review the progress of post-disaster flood handling in the area. "We all flew to Aceh, performed the Eid prayer there, with the people of Aceh in particular," said Teddy as quoted by Antara on Saturday, March 21, 2026.

Teddy explained that President Prabowo performed the congregational Eid prayer at a location near the temporary shelters for disaster-affected victims. After the Eid prayer, Prabowo will receive a report on the latest developments in disaster management in Aceh from the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian and the Minister of Public Works DodyHanggono who arrived earlier in Tamiang.

President Prabowo began his Eid al-Fitr tour on Friday, March 20, 2026, arriving in Medan to perform takbiran during the eve of Eid and departing the following morning.

Saudi Arabia condemns Israeli ‘aggression’ against Syria

March 21, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has condemned on Saturday Israel’s strikes targeting military installations in southern Syria.

“The Kingdom reiterates its firm rejection of this blatant aggression and Israel’s violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement,” the Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement, and called on the international community to intervene and end “Israel’s violations of international laws and norms.”

Israel’s military said on Friday it had struck southern Syria in response to what it called attacks against the Druze community in Sweida province, AFP reported.

“The Kingdom affirms its solidarity with the Syrian Arab Republic and its support for all measures that preserve its sovereignty, maintain its territorial integrity and unity, and achieve security and stability for it and its brotherly people,” the statement said.

The attack “constitutes a flagrant and repeated violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a blatant breach of international law and the principles of the UN Charter, which guarantee the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states,” the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.

It also rejected the repetition of Israel’s provocative practices, and warned that “this escalation is a dangerous disregard for regional security and stability, and threatens to plunge the Middle East into further chaos and tension.”

Turkiye also condemned the Israeli attacks “as a dangerous escalation” and urged the international community “to stop the Israeli attacks.”

Putin says Russia is 'loyal friend, reliable partner' of Iran's Islamic regime in Nowruz message

By TOBIAS HOLCMAN

MARCH 21, 2026

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday called the Iranian regime a "loyal friend and reliable partner" in a message congratulating the Iranian people on Nowruz, the Persian New Year.

"Vladimir Putin wished the Iranian people strength in overcoming these severe trials and emphasised that during this difficult time, Moscow remained a loyal friend and reliable partner of Tehran," the Kremlin said in a statement.

This represents one of the first public messages of support from the Russian government to the Iranian regime, with previous statements urging restraint and de-escalation rather than open support.

The latest Russian proposal to reach a ceasefire in the region, which Putin personally told US President Donald Trump during a call, aimed to move Iran's enriched uranium to Russia as a way to de-escalate the situation.

A report posted by The Washington Post during the first week of the war revealed that Russia has been providing Iran with intelligence to help it target US assets in the Middle East.

According to the report, Russia has been giving Iran the locations of US military assets since the outbreak of the war, including warships and aircraft.

Another report published by Politico said that Russia offered to stop sharing intelligence with Iran if Washington ceased supplying Ukraine with intelligence about Russia, but the United States rejected the idea. The Kremlin has dismissed the report as fake.

The published strategic partnership between Tehran and Moscow does not contain a mutual defense clause, and Russia has repeatedly said that it does not want Iran to develop an atomic bomb, a step that Moscow fears would trigger a nuclear arms race across the Middle East.

Report: UN Chief Says He Is Cooperating with Trump’s Board of Peace on Gaza

21 March 2026

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the aim of Donald Trump's Board of Peace to fund and deliver the basics of a Gaza reconstruction plan to rebuild Palestinian homes and infrastructure, Politico reported on Saturday.

“There is an objective there that was defined, approved by the Security Council, and we are cooperating actively with structures created by the Board of Peace,” Guterres told the news outlet in an interview.

Guterres saw no need for the board beyond Gaza's reconstruction. “This is not the effective way to address the dramatic problems that we have now,” he said.

“We need to be clear about international law, to be clear about the values of the Charter of the United Nations. That is essential in any peace initiative.”

Representative of the Religious Authority in Al-Kadhimiya: War on Iran and Lebanon Is Unjust, Calls for Condemnation

21-03-2026

The representative of the Religious Authority in Al-Kadhimiya, Sheikh Hussein Al-Yassin, stated on Saturday that the war against Iran and Lebanon is unjust, calling for its condemnation.

Sheikh Al-Yassin, citing the guidance of The Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, said in a speech followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Although Eid carries the meanings of joy, the hearts of believers are torn today as they witness the suffering of our brothers in faith and humanity. While we glorify Allah in celebration of His blessings, the cries of children rise, the tears of widows’ fall, and flames engulf the homes of the innocent in Iran and Lebanon amid ongoing military aggression against them.”

He added, “We categorically condemn this unjust war and call upon all Muslims and the free people of the world to denounce it, and to stand in solidarity with the oppressed peoples of Iran and Lebanon. We urge all effective international bodies, particularly Islamic nations, to exert their utmost efforts to halt it.”

Sheikh Al-Yassin continued, “Our hearts are grieved by the suffering around us. Yet Allah’s mercy is vast, His relief is near, and His victory will inevitably come if you remain patient and God-fearing.”

He also called for support to those in need, “whether through relevant institutions or by delivering aid directly to the rightful recipients,” emphasizing “the importance of maintaining family ties and social connections, especially during this occasion which represents an opportunity to strengthen compassion and tolerance within society.”

He concluded his speech with prayers for widespread security and stability, invoking Allah’s mercy upon believers, and expressing hope for the imminent alleviation of crises.

Mar 21, 2026

Bhopal, Most members of the Shia Muslim community refrained from celebrating Eid on Saturday as they denounced the killing of Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israel strikes, and chanted slogans against the two countries in protest.

Jamia Masjid closure for Eid prayers unfortunate, painful: CM Omar

March 21, 2026

Srinagar, Mar 21: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed anguish over the denial of permission for Eid prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid, said such decisions need to be reconsidered, and asserted that restrictions at the city’s largest mosque raise questions about the normalcy claimed by security agencies.

The chief minister said he was “saddened” that worshippers were not allowed to offer prayers at the centuries-old mosque in the city centre.

“Peacefully, Eid prayers have been offered in the whole of Jammu and Kashmir. Unfortunately, once again, Eid prayers have not been allowed in the historical Jamia Masjid of Srinagar. I feel very saddened by this,” CM Omar Abdullah told reporters.

“The security and law enforcement officials who are in charge of security and law and order repeatedly say that the situation is normal. But what kind of normalcy is this? Eid prayers are not allowed in the largest mosque in Srinagar,” he said.

Mumbai condemns damage to Iran's World Heritage sites

Mar 21, 2026

MUMBAI: They survived invasions, coups, World War II and the eight-year war with Iraq. Now many of Iran's iconic heritage sites -- including the Unesco-listed Golestan Palace, Naqsh-e Jahan Square and ChehelSotoun Palace -- have suffered damage following US-Israel airstrikes. Iran has said it installed blue flags on all heritage and cultural sites as a signal to Israel and the US, in vain.

Historians, Zoroastrian researchers and heritage enthusiasts have expressed outrage at the damage to these World Heritage sites, saying they "belong not just to Iran, but to humanity". Many of the monuments -- including museums and mosques -- may not have been directly hit. However, they sustained damage from shockwaves and falling debris caused by strikes on nearby govt buildings and military and police infrastructure.

Among the sites are Ali Qapu Palace, Golestan Palace and Falak-ol-Aflak Castle. The castle, built atop an ancient hill during the pre-Islamic Persian Empire of the Sasanian era, stands in Khorramabad in Lorestan Province. "Fifty-six museums, historical monuments and cultural sites have so far sustained damage," said Hamid Sharifi, public diplomacy officer at the Consulate General of Iran in Mumbai.

Historians say the damage to heritage sites in Isfahan is particularly heartbreaking. Landmarks such as Naqsh-e Jahan Square -- a 16th-century plaza spanning 964,000 square feet -- and the gardens and pavilion of ChehelSotoun Palace are so magnificent that they helped earn Isfahan the title Nisf-e-Jahan, or "half the world", among Iranians. "I have been to Iran many times and am devastated at the reported damage to these historic sites," said FirozaMistree. "As a Zoroastrian, I consider Iran my homeland, though I live in and love India. The sites associated with the pre-Islamic Persian Empire were well maintained, and Iranians are proud of their heritage. I am heartbroken."

March 21, 2026

Srinagar, March 21 : Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday extended Eid greetings to the people and called for special prayers for the Muslim Ummah, particularly those facing hardships in Palestine, Lebanon and Iran.

In her message on the occasion of Eid, Mehbooba said that while people celebrate the festival after the holy month of Ramadan, they should also remember those across the Muslim world who are going through difficult times and pray for relief and peace for them.

Pak ATC diverts 30 planes from entering Iranian war zone

March 21, 2026

Pakistan Airport Traffic Control has prevented around 30 passenger-aircraft from entering the Iranian war zone during the last two days, thus averting a major disaster, an official said on Friday.” Due to severe weather conditions, some 30 Pakistani passenger aircraft were on the verge of drifting into Iranian war-zone airspace on Wednesday and Thursday. Timely guidance from the air traffic controllers, particularly coordination with the Karachi Flight Information Region, helped avert a major disaster,” an official of the Airport Traffic Controllers of Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) said. He said these aircraft came under the pressure of extreme weather near the Iran border, creating a highly risky situation. However, the professionalism demonstrated by the Lahore air traffic controllers ensured that the planes were safely diverted away from the danger zone, although no response was received from Tehran Air Traffic Control despite repeated attempts, he said. These flights were arriving and going to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and some other countries.

How Pakistan’s strategic assets became its greatest threat

by DhananjayTripathi

Mar 21, 2026

Even as the crisis in West Asia continues to unfold, another deadly confrontation is underway between Afghanistan and Pakistan. On Monday, Pakistan bombed a drug rehabilitation centre in Kabul, killing 400 people and injuring 300. The attack on the hospital represents a grave escalation in the already strained relations between the two neighbours, whose ties have remained complicated since 1947.

While the current conflict is not solely a result of the border dispute, understanding this division is essential to understanding the complexities of the Afghanistan-Pakistan conflict. This is compounded further by factors such as the Taliban regime, the Tehrik-e-Taliban -Pakistan (TTP), various historical standoffs, and Pakistan’s policy of Strategic Depth.

On February 27, the Pakistan Army launched Operation Ghazal Lil Haq, conducting airstrikes on border posts in Afghanistan. Since the onset of the open conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan, more than 400 Afghan soldiers and 55 Pakistani soldiers have lost their lives. By March 2, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan reported at least 146 civilian casualties, with more than half being women and children.

On February 26th, the Afghan Army launched an attack on Pakistani military bases, claiming to have killed more than 50 Pakistani soldiers. This action was in retaliation for aerial strikes by Pakistan on February 22nd, which killed over 20 civilians. The present escalation has effectively shattered the fragile ceasefire mediated by Qatar and Turkey in October 2025.

The TTP was founded in 2007 by BaitullahMehsud, from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) region. After Pakistan joined the U.S. war on terror in 2001, military operations against the Taliban and other militant groups intensified in FATA and Pakistan’s northwestern region.

One significant event was the Lal Masjid siege in 2007, where militants occupied the mosque and demanded societal reforms based on Sharia law. After a week-long operation, Pakistani security forces regained control of the mosque. This siege acted as a catalyst for the formation of TTP just six months later.

The group’s activities surged after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021. By 2024, Pakistan reported over 1,000 terror-related incidents linked to the TTP, more than double the number in 2023.

The Taliban have publicly stated that the TTP is not permitted to operate from Afghan territory, asserting that the TTP is an internal issue of Pakistan. However, there are ideological-ethnic similarities between the two groups, as they both originate from the Deoband school of thought. Additionally, the TTP has pledged allegiance to the leadership of the Taliban.

Pakistan claims the TTP has received safe shelter in Afghanistan, prompting it to conduct military operations there. Not long ago, the Taliban leadership found refuge in Pakistan, and when the Taliban returned to Afghanistan in 2021, then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, publicly celebrated it as a victory on social media.

Throughout both the Cold War and the post–Cold War periods, Pakistan maintained close contacts with various Afghan groups, including the Taliban. It also came under criticism for its links with the Taliban, particularly after the US launched its war in Afghanistan. Over the past two decades, Pakistan has argued that ethnic Pashtun ties across the border and the porous nature of the Durand Line make it easy for Taliban fighters to cross into Pakistan and find refuge there.

However, this same rationale now appears to be used against Pakistan itself when it comes to the TTP. Pakistan utilised the border region to engage with the Taliban, intending to leverage the group for its strategic advantage. This strategy is detailed in the book “Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban: Beyond Bin Laden and 9/11” by slain Pakistani journalist Syed SaleemShahzad. The Pakistani army aimed to maintain control in Afghanistan, as evidenced by the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC-814, which was taken to Kandahar for safety and negotiation.

Under the policy of “Strategic Depth,” developed in the 1980s, Pakistan believed that a friendly regime in Kabul would provide it with strategic leverage and geopolitical advantage in South and Central Asia. The support for the Taliban and other Mujahideen groups began with Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and continued under General Zia-ul-Haq. During Operation Cyclone, the CIA provided approximately $20 billion to train the Mujahideen, who later became the Taliban, to combat the Soviets, with Pakistan acting as the key facilitator and enabler.

After Pakistan joined the US in its war against Afghanistan in 2001, the Taliban became the primary adversary. However, Pakistan eventually relaxed its stance against the Taliban and sheltered some of its leadership. Today, it stands opposed to the Taliban. Still, it remains nearly impossible for Pakistan to entirely suppress sympathies for the group within its territory. To fully understand this situation, we must delve into the history of the Durand Line.

Haroon Sana, in “Frontiers of Faith,” discusses the North-Western Frontier of India during the 1890s, surveyed by British political and military authorities. This region included Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan. The British later adopted a “Forward Policy” to administer these territories, establishing the North West Frontier Province in 1901. Hopkins (2020) describes this as “Frontier Governmentality,” in which the relationship between state authority and the tribes was weak, and British sovereignty was notably limited.

British interest in the region intensified with the growing concerns about Russian strategic ambitions in Central Asia, prompting a strengthening of frontier policy. Consequently, in 1893, the Durand Line was negotiated between Sir Mortimer Durand and Amir Abdur Rahman Khan to demarcate spheres of influence between British India and Afghanistan — primarily to create a buffer between British and Russian strategic interests rather than a permanent international boundary.

Pakistan was created in 1947, at which point the Durand Line, originally intended to be a buffer zone, became a fixed, hardened international boundary stretching approximately 2,460 kilometres. Many Pashtuns found themselves divided by this border, even though their identity and lineage extended across it. Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan called for a referendum for the creation of a State of Pakhtoonistan. The Afghan government under King Zahir Shah rejected the Durand Line, arguing it had been signed under duress. In 1947, Afghanistan became the only country to oppose Pakistan’s admission to the United Nations. In September 1950, Pakistan alleged that Afghan tribesmen and troops had crossed the Durand Line into northern Balochistan, leading to a diplomatic rupture between the two embassies. In 1957, the flag of Pashtunistan was raised at the Pakistan embassy in Kabul. Relations deteriorated further when Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan was assassinated by an Afghan national.

In 1960, the Bajaur campaign was initiated by Afghan Prime Minister Daud Khan, escalating into armed conflict. In response, the Pakistan Air Force crossed the border and bombed Afghan military posts. Daud Khan, a supporter of a unified Pashtun state, was nonetheless compelled by pressure from Afghan elites to make peace with Pakistan and resigned in 1963. The idea of Pashtunistan, however, was not entirely abandoned by some within Afghan leadership. In 1973, King Zahir Shah was overthrown by his cousin Daud Khan amid drought, famine, and an ineffective political system. Khan revived the Pashtun movement, abolished the 1964 constitution, and established the Republic of Afghanistan.

During the 1970s, when Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was Prime Minister of Pakistan, Islamabad adopted a “forward policy” towards Afghanistan, aiming to counter Pashtun and other ethno-nationalist movements by supporting Islamist factions within Afghanistan. Leaders such as GulbuddinHekmatyar and BurhanuddinRabbani reportedly received funding and training from Pakistan to weaken competing political forces. Bhutto viewed these groups as valuable allies in limiting both Indian and communist influence in the region.

After General Zia-ul-Haq took power, this policy expanded through the promotion of Deobandi madrassas, which played a significant role in educating and mobilising individuals who later became associated with the Taliban. As noted by Christine Fair, Pakistan’s support for the Mujahideen was a crucial phase in its broader strategy of asymmetric warfare against India. In the following decades, networks that formed during the Afghan jihad were also used as proxies to sustain insurgency in Kashmir. However, today this strategy seems to be failing, as relations between Pakistan and the Taliban have become increasingly strained.

The ongoing Afghanistan-Pakistan conflict represents another revealing dimension of Pakistan’s foreign relations. Much like its complicated relationship with the United States, Pakistan has also struggled to maintain stable ties with its neighbour, Afghanistan. The most intriguing aspect of this relationship today is that Pakistan faces defiance and resistance from the very Taliban that it once assumed to be under its strategic influence and control.

Pakistan Nurtured Terror For Decades. It Has Now Come Home To Roost

by: DebanishAchom

Mar 21, 2026

New Delhi:

For decades, Pakistan cultivated terror networks as instruments of foreign policy. The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2026 documents, with clinical precision, what that calculus has produced. Pakistan ranks first on the GTI for the first time, becoming the world's most terror-affected country in 2025, with 1,139 deaths, 1,045 attacks, 1,595 people injured, and 655 hostages.

Its score of 8.574 puts it ahead of every other country on the index. This is Pakistan's deadliest year since 2013, and the sixth consecutive year in which terrorism deaths have risen. Across South Asia, it is the only country where the situation worsened in 2025; every other nation in the region recorded an improvement.

The two provinces doing most of the dying are Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, with 74 per cent of attacks and 67 per cent of deaths.

Bruised On All Fronts: AsimMunir Eyes Sectarian Flashpoint In Pakistan

March 21, 2026

New Delhi: Pakistan is in need of multiple diversions as it faces setbacks on multiple fronts. The war in Afghanistan and the battle with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has left the security apparatus in Pakistan badly bruised. The pressure on Field Marshal AsimMunir, who is the head of the army is immense and he is in need of a major diversion.

Indian agencies tracking the developments in Pakistan say that Munir’s next move is to incite violence between the Sunnis and Shias.

Since the beginning of the war in Iran, the Shias have been targeted in Pakistan. The rallies carried out in solidarity for Iran are being branded as anti-national and anti-Sunni.

This is a clear attempt at inciting tensions and hoping that the Shias would indulge in violence. This in turn would lead to a major escalation of violence between the Shia and majority Sunni Muslim population in Pakistan.

Iran threatens to attack tourist sites across the world as Israel and U.S. kill top leaders

By Jon Gambrell

March 20, 2026

Iran threatened to target recreational and tourist sites worldwide and insisted it was still building missiles. Friday’s show of defiance came nearly three weeks into U.S.-Israeli strikes that have killed a slew of Tehran’s top leaders and hammered its weapons and energy industries.

Iran fired on Israel and energy sites in neighboring Gulf Arab states as many in the region marked one of the holiest days on the Muslim calendar. Iranians were also celebrating the Persian New Year, known as Nowruz, a normally festive holiday that is more subdued this year.

With little information coming out of Iran, it was not clear how much damage its arms, nuclear or energy facilities have sustained since the war began Feb. 28 or even who was truly in charge of the country. But Iran has showed it is still capable of attacks that are choking off oil supplies and denting the global economy, raising food and fuel prices far beyond the Middle East.

PMOI Resistance Units: Sovereignty belongs to the Iranian people

By Matin Karim

March 21, 2026

On March 20, as Iranians marked Nowruz, brave activists of the PMOI Resistance Units in the southeastern city of Zahedan launched a defiant anti-regime campaign. Despite the regime’s threats of severe crackdowns under wartime conditions, these activists took to the streets to project a message of readiness and resilience. Through placards and posters, the Resistance Units explicitly reiterated their support for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its Provisional Government. Their core message was unwavering: the Iranian people demand a democratic republic and vehemently reject all forms of dictatorship, whether past or present.

The slogans displayed across Zahedan highlighted a century-long struggle for democratic governance. Placards read, “For a hundred years, the main war in Iran is between freedom and the tyranny of the shah and mullahs’ regimes.”

The activists firmly warned against letting remnants of monarchical fascism hijack the democratic revolution. “All of the futile efforts of the son of the Shah inside Iran ended up benefiting the son of the mullah Mojtaba Khamenei,” one message stated, emphasizing that “The sovereignty of the people of Iran is not the inheritance of the mullahs and the shah.”

Iranians mark Eid as Trump mulls winding down war

21/03/2026

Iran's supreme leader traditionally leads Eid prayers but Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who came to power earlier this month after his father was killed in a US-Israeli strike, has remained out of the public eye.

Instead, the head of the judiciary, GholamHosseinMohseniEjei, attended prayers at central Tehran's Imam Khomeini grand mosque, named after the founder of the Islamic republic, which was filled to overflowing, with worshippers in the streets outside.

Iran's key ally Russian President Vladimir Putin sent greetings to Khamenei, "wished the Iranian people strength on overcoming these severe trials and emphasised that during this difficult time, Moscow remained a loyal friend and reliable partner of Tehran".

According to Iran's atomic energy organisation, the US and Israel targeted a plant at Natanz in Isfahan province, which hosts underground centrifuges to enrich uranium for Iran's disputed nuclear programme and was already damaged in last year's June war.

Pakistan Conflict: Both sides agree to temporary pause in fighting ahead of Eid

21-Mar-2026

Nearly a month after the latest round of fighting erupted between Afghanistan and Pakistan, both sides have agreed to a temporary pause to mark the Muslim festival of Eid. The truce is a fragile one and comes with a warning from Islamabad. CGTN's Danial Khan has the latest.

Pakistan has announced a temporary halt to what it calls 'Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq,' its ongoing campaign targeting militant networks and their infrastructure inside Afghanistan.

The pause, which comes into effect at midnight, will last until March 24th, timed with Eid al-Fitr, and follows requests from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye.

Officials here say this is a goodwill gesture, rooted in both diplomacy and religious considerations. But the message from Islamabad is unambiguous: This pause is conditional.

The fight to control the narrative in the Afghan-Pakistan conflict

Caroline Davies

21-03-2026

Monday's air strike on Kabul resulted in the highest number of casualties seen since hostilities began again in February.

Within hours of explosions ringing across the capital, both sides were posting on social media - a war of words as people searched for answers.

"The Pakistani military regime has once again violated Afghanistan's airspace and targeted a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, resulting in the death and injury of addicts who were undergoing treatment," posted ZabihullahMujahid, the Taliban government's spokesperson, who added he considers such an act to be "a crime against humanity".

On an account called "Fact Checker MOIB", Pakistan's Ministry of Information responded, stamping "propaganda" across a picture of the Taliban spokesman's post.

Samuel Kalantzis Reporter

21 Mar 2026

New data shows anti-Muslim hate crime incidents are below the national average in Leicester but people in Leicester said 'we still have a long way to go'.

The government has published a new definition of anti-Muslim hostility, prompted by a record 4,478 hate crimes across the UK targeting Muslims, or people perceived to be of the Muslim faith.

The new definition states: "Anti-Muslim hostility is intentionally engaging in, assisting or encouraging criminal acts – including acts of violence, vandalism, harassment, or intimidation, whether physical, verbal, written or electronically communicated – that are directed at Muslims because of their religion or at those who are perceived to be Muslim, including where that perception is based on assumptions about ethnicity, race or appearance."

Eid moon spotters pass skills to next generation

Aisha Iqbal

21-03-2026

Moon spotters were passing their skills to the next generation as Muslims waited for a sighting of the new moon to celebrate Eid.

Families and astronomers gathered at a site known locally as "top of the world" on Gaisby Lane, Shipley, to try to see a slither of the new crescent moon.

Islam follows a lunar calendar with each month starting at the sighting of the moon. Eid al-Fitr is held on the first day of the 10th month of the calendar marking the end of Ramadan, when Muslims fast from dawn to sundown.

Opinions on when to celebrate Eid vary among British Muslims - some follow guidance from Saudi Arabia while others look to the nearest Muslim country, Morocco.

Canadians mark Eid al-Fitr amid ‘growing concerns’ from global tensions

By PrishaDev

As Canadians who celebrate come together on this holy day, many also carry concern for loved ones back home amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“It’s been a really challenging Ramadan, as you can imagine. A lot of Canadian Muslims come from different backgrounds and have roots in many parts of the world,” he said.

Ecuador’s Netanyahu and Trump supporters target Ecuadorian–Iranian Cultural Center

byXimeYauca

21 March 2026

Operation Epic Fury, which the United States and Israel executed on the Islamic Republic of Iran in the early hours of February 28, 2026, left hundreds dead, including leading figures in the Islamic regime and women and children.

Although this military assault occurred some 13,270 km from Ecuador, in Quito, the country’s capital, supporters of Israel’s and the United States’ leaders raided the Ecuadorian–Iranian Cultural Center, in the north of the city. They used sticks and pepper spray whilst shouting insults and threats.

According to viral social media images, a group of people arrived outside the center in a caravan of cars at around 7:30 pm local time (GMT-5). The group, some of whom had sticks, were shouting at and threatening those inside, damaging property, causing panic and leaving two injured.

This video reports how women and children were assaulted while praying in the Ecuadorian–Iranian Cultural Center in Quito. This is a direct consequence of the biased and dehumanizing narratives that turn foreign policy into fuel for hatred. When the Foreign Office takes a stance siding with Israel, the United States, and their international terrorism, it also legitimizes violence at home. https://t.co/7aQ3er7Y1x pic.twitter.com/gKsGRir8fr

Under the baobab: Penn State Powwow founder leaves lasting legacy

By Charles Dumas

March 21, 2026

Happy spring and Eid Mubarak, sisters and brothers. The holy month of Ramadan ended on Friday with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. Our Muslim neighbors celebrated with communal prayer, fasting, zakat and spiritual renewal by visiting family and friends, wearing new clothes, and attending to special needs. Sadly this year, this time of joy and celebration is marred by war in the Middle East, the cradle of three great religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Our time of grief should not be focused on oil but a renewal of compassion, dignity and respect. There are those who come into a wanting world and seek ways to transform it into a better place. Sensing a desert they plant gardens. Seeing an absence they create a lasting presence. Such a one was our brother, leader and colleague John Sanchez. John and Victoria joined Penn State in 1997. John was a faculty member in the Bellisario College of Communications. At the time they were the only native family in our Nittany Valley community, which was erroneously named after an “extinct indigenous tribe.” John, a leading scholar of in the field of intercultural studies, accessed the situation. Then, rather than “cursing the darkness,” he lit a candle. John’s tribal affiliation was Yaqui/Apache. Mining was his cultural heritage, and he inaugurated a local Powwow, a traditional ceremony. Native dancers, chefs, vendors and scholars were invited to come to our community to share their heritage, their culture, their joy. From those beginnings, over the years, thousands have come to participate, native and non-native. Through these efforts we have been elevated by the wisdom from our most ancient American peoples. We are, only because they were. The 20th Penn State Powwow, “New Faces of an Ancient People,” will fill the C3 Sports Complex March 28-29. For the first time, Professor Emeritus John Sanchez will be with us in spirit only. He was laid to rest in Kansas, near his mother and father, surrounded by his loving family. We share collective love and grief with Victoria, their children, Dakota and Kerry, Brave Heart and Cindy and grandchildren. Elsewhere around town Congratulations to the Penn State women’s hockey team. They made it to the Frozen Four for the first time, with the NCAA tournament finals held at Pegula Ice Arena. And roll on, PSU wrestling. The dynasty continues — favorites to win the NCAA Championship. We believe they will. Welcome back Tanisha Wright, the new head coach of the Lady Lions. We have been fans of Tanisha since she played under Renee Portland in 2001 to 2005, leading the Lady Lions to back-to-back Big Ten titles and four NCAA appearances. She was a three time Big Ten Defensive player of the year. We followed her to the pros where she played for 10 years with the Seattle Storm, leading them to nine straight playoffs and the 2010 championship. One of the league’s stars, she was defensive first team five times. Her first head coaching job was from 2021-24 with the Atlanta Dream, where she was named the AP Coach of the Year in 2022. Let’s go, back to t

'The risk of catastrophe is enormous here.' New details emerge in mosque shooting plot

By: Scott Noll

Mar 21, 2026

COLUMBIA STATION, OH — Federal prosecutors said in a court filing Friday that “only timely intervention by law enforcement” kept a Valley City man from finalizing and carrying out his plans to commit a mass shooting at a Columbia Station mosque "because he hates Muslims.”

The memorandum in support of pretrial detention filed by the government is the first time federal prosecutors have indicated how big of a threat they considered Wyatt Brzoska.

Prosecutors urged a judge to keep the 20-year-old in jail, warning, “Had he not been arrested, he could have committed an unspeakable atrocity.”

Investigators said they first learned of the plans in November after the FBI received a tip about social media posts possibly threatening a mass shooting at a mosque.

Federal investigators wrote in court documents that Brzoska was questioned by the Medina County Sheriff’s Office, but claimed the posts were a joke.

Thousands of Muslims mark Eid in Toronto with heavy hearts

Mar 20, 2026

Thousands of people gathered at aEid festival in Toronto on Friday to celebrate the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, but an organizer says many people did so with heavy hearts.

Zubair Khan said Eid al-Fitr is a time to celebrate community and faith, but also it happened this year at a particularly fragile time as the war in the Middle East intensifies.

"In our tradition, our understanding is that our global community is like one body. And when any aspect of it is hurting, the rest of body feels that, is concerned about that and responds to that," said Khan, one of the masters of ceremonies of the MAC Eid Festival at the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place.

"Even though it's a very ethnically diverse community and we're all the way here in Canada, our hearts, our thoughts, our prayers are very much with people suffering around the world and places in the world, such as Sudan, Gaza, the unfortunate situation in Lebanon, Iran, Afghanistan," he added.
