Muslim Brotherhood HQ stormed in Cairo; 16 dead in Sunday's protests
AFP | Jul 1, 2013
CAIRO: Egyptian protesters on Monday stormed the headquarters of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood after deadly clashes there between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi who hails from the group, an AFP correspondent said.
The building in Cairo's Moqattam district was set ablaze before people stormed inside and began throwing things out of the windows, as others were seen leaving with items including furniture.
Witnesses told AFP there were no Brotherhood members still inside the building, after they were escorted out by a group of people early on Monday.
16 killed in Sunday's protests
At least 16 people died in protests across Egypt on Sunday, including eight in clashes between opponents and supporters of President Mohamed Morsi in Cairo, the health ministry said on Monday.
A further three people died in the central province of Assiut and one in each of the provinces of Fayoum, Beni Sueif and Kafr el-Sheikh.
One protester suffocated to death at the rally outside the presidential palace in Cairo and another died of wounds in the coastal city of Alexandria, the ministry said.
Egypt opposition gives Morsi a day to quit
Egypt's opposition on Monday gave Islamist Mohamed Morsi a day to quit or face civil disobedience after deadly protests demanded the country's first democratically elected president step down after just a year in office.
"We give Mohamed Morsi until 5:00pm (1500 GMT) on Tuesday July 2 to leave power, allowing state institutions to prepare for early presidential elections," the Tamarod movement said in a statement on its website.
Otherwise, "Tuesday, 5:00pm will be the beginning of a complete civil disobedience campaign."
In Cairo, the seat of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood from which Morsi hails was set ablaze before people stormed and looted it, an AFP correspondent said.
People were seen leaving with petrol bombs, helmets, flak jackets, furniture, televisions and documents.
"This is a historic moment. The Brotherhood ruined the country, so stealing from them is justified," protester Mohammed told AFP.
Tamarod — Arabic for Rebellion — is a grassroots campaign which says it collected more than 22 million signatures declaring a lack of confidence in Morsi.
It was behind Sunday's protests that saw millions of people pour onto the streets demanding his departure on the first anniversary of his inauguration.
As Morsi stood firm and insisted the only way forward was dialogue, calls for army intervention increased.
Tamarod urged state institutions to support the protesters, calling on "the army, the police and the judiciary to clearly side with the popular will as represented by the crowds".
Opposition leader Hamdeen Sabbahi urged military intervention if Morsi refused to quit.
The army, which led a tumultuous transition after Mubarak, had already warned it would intervene if there was major unrest.
"The armed forces must act, because they have always been on the side of the people "which has expressed its will", said Sabbahi, who was third in the 2012 presidential election.
The best outcome would be for Morsi to go willingly, he added.
But Morsi's spokesman Ehab Fahmy told reporters: "Dialogue is the only way through which we can reach an understanding ... The presidency is open to a real and serious national dialogue."
Five people were killed in clashes late on Sunday and another person died overnight from injuries, a health ministry official said.
Television pictures showed the Muslim Brotherhood building in Cairo burning as people pelted it with petrol bombs.
Brotherhood supporters fired buckshot in a bid to repel the attackers, an AFP journalist said. Later, automatic weapons fire was heard.
In Tahrir Square, where hundreds of protesters spent the night, demonstrators blew whistles and chanted anti-Morsi slogans around tents.
Outside the presidential palace, hundreds of others staged a sit-in after the army estimated that millions had heeded the opposition call to protest.
Sunday's turnout — on the first anniversary of Morsi's inauguration — was described as the largest protest in Egyptian history.
"Long live the people," read Monday's headline in the independent daily al-Tahrir, while Al-Masry al-Youm called it the "June 30 revolution".
Anti-Morsi protests were held in the coastal city of Alexandria, the Nile Delta cities of Mansura, Menuf, Tanta and Mahalla, the canal cities of Suez and Port Said and the president's hometown Zagazig.
In Tahrir Square, protesters brandished red cards and Egyptian flags as patriotic songs played.
"The people want the ouster of the regime," they chanted, echoing the signature slogan of the 2011 revolt that ousted Hosni Mubarak and eventually brought Morsi to power.
His supporters have staged counter rallies to defend his legitimacy and there had been fears of major confrontations.
But Sunday's anti-government protests eclipsed the loyalists' gathering in Cairo's Nasr City neighbourhood, which the army estimated attracted some 25,000 people.
Police and troops had deployed at key buildings nationwide, including at vital Suez Canal installations.
Hospitals also went on high alert as banks and most offices closed on Sunday, a working day.
Last week, eight people including an American were killed and scores were injured as rival demonstrators clashed.
Morsi, previously a senior Brotherhood leader, is Egypt's first freely elected president, catapulted to power by the uprising that ended three decades of Mubarak rule.
His opponents accuse him of betraying the revolution by concentrating power in Islamist hands and of sending the economy into freefall.
Morsi supporters say he inherited many problems from a corrupt regime, and that he should be allowed to complete term which ends in 2016.
Any attempt to remove him would be a coup against democracy, they say.
Opponents insist calls for his resignation are aimed at restoring the revolution's cornerstones of democracy, freedom and social justice.

Iraq: Gunmen kill 8 anti-al-Qaeda Sunni fighters
July 01, 2013
BAGHDAD — Iraqi officials say gunmen have killed eight anti-al-Qaeda Sunni militiamen north of the capital, Baghdad.
A police officer says the men were snatched from their houses in the town of Mishahda and surrounding villages during the past two days. He added that their dead bodies were left in an orchard on Monday with gunshots wounds to their heads and chests. Some had their hands bound behind their backs.
The town is 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the capital.
A health official confirmed the casualty figure. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Wrong to equate Syrian victims with perpetrator of violence: Saud
July 01, 2013
MANAMA – Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud Al-Faisal said here on Sunday that it was wrong to equate the Syrian victims with the perpetrator of daily violence and human rights violations on the ground.
“How can we compare the two parties and stances? One is unconditionally supplied with weapons to use in killing its own people and sparking sectarian sedition, while the other party is deprived of weapons supplies although in grave need of them for legitimate self-defense, because some states use the justification that they might end up in the hands of terrorists and thus spark a sectarian conflict,” Prince Saud said, addressing the 23rd GCC-EU Joint Ministerial Council’s meeting.
He said the EU “must immediately implement its decision” to lift an arms embargo on weapons destined for Syria’s opposition. This, he said, was essential to offset assistance Damascus received from “Hezbollah and other forces backed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards who get unlimited supplies of Russian weapons”.
“The international community must ban the supply of weapons to the Syrian regime and demand that foreign occupation forces withdraw from Syria,” said Prince Saud.
The Gulf Arab nations and the European Union pledged to pool their efforts to help convene a peace conference on Syria, as they wrapped up a one-day ministerial meeting. The gathering attended by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and the foreign ministers of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council also called on Iran to play “a constructive role” in the region.
The ministers “reiterated the utmost urgency of finding a political settlement of the Syrian conflict,” said a statement issued at the end of the meeting. – SG

Assad's forces battle to tighten control of central Syria
Reuters | Jun 30, 2013
AMMAN: President Basharal-Assad's forces pounded Sunni Muslim rebels in the city of Homs with artillery and from the air on Sunday, the second day of an offensive to expand loyalist control over Syria's strategic centre, activists said.
They said rebels defending the old centre of Homs and five adjacent Sunni districts had largely repelled a ground attack on Saturday by Assad's forces but reported fresh clashes and deaths within the city on Sunday.

Tahrir bursts into life after months of calm, the target was Mohamed Morsi
July 01, 2013
A few blocks from Tahrir Square, the eerie silence of a shuttered downtown Cairo suddenly erupts into a roar of horns, drums, whistles and chants.
The smell of popcorn, cigarette smoke, grilled meat and freshly-squeezed oranges fills the air, as hundreds of thousands of protesters clap, cheer and wave the red-white-and-black Egyptian flag.
After months of calm, Tahrir, the festive heart of the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak, has burst back into life.
But in a reminder of the darker side of that protest encampment, women's activists said more than 30 women suffered organised sexual assaults by gangs of men in the square during Sunday's rally.

Warning over use of lethal 'bomb' pesticides in UAE
Anwar Ahmad
Jun 30, 2013
ABU DHABI // Householders have been warned about unlicensed pest-control companies using a pesticide called “bomb” that is potentially fatal.
“Bomb”, or aluminium phosphide, has been banned from public sale since 2009 and only licensed operators are permitted to use it.
“In the right environment it is a highly effective product but it should never be used in residential properties,” James Nicholson, general manager of the licensed pest control company Rentokil, said yesterday.
“You have to look at the training of an individual and the management structure of a company as to how these products are used in such environments – there is clearly gross negligence when people are dying from pesticide application.”

Former AIADMK MLA stirs hornet’s nest over triple Talaq, filed a PIL in Madras High Court
July 1, 2013
Chennai: An independent practitioner of law in the High Court of Madras and former AIADMK MLA from Triplicane in Chennai, Badar Sayeed has stirred a hornet’s nest once again through filing a PIL in the Madras High Court over issuance of triple Talaq by men, demanding an end to the practice of unilateral issuance of Talaq (divorce) certificates by the Quazis. Needless to say, the Quazis, local Muslim politicians and their supporters didn’t like this.
A big number of men from the community marched in protest towards Sayeed’s house at Seshadri Street in Alwarpet, at a stone’s throw from Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence, threatening to surround her house. The protestors were stopped by the police, 100 of whom were taken into custody. While en route to meet the activist lawyer, RNI correspondent encountered a good number of derogatory posters against Badar Sayeed, which she herself cites as vindication of her stand. “Which sharia allows a man to paste photos of a woman on the walls so that others could see it,” says Badar adding that the Quazis, by unilaterally issuing such certificates of divorce, are denying Muslim women their right to lead a married life enshrined in Article 21 of the constitution.

US encouraging Xinjiang ‘terrorism’: Chinese state media
AFP
Jul 1, 2013
URUMQI: The United States is encouraging “terrorism” in Xinjiang, Chinese state media said Monday, also claiming separatists in the region – which has a large Uighur minority – had fought alongside Syrian rebels.
Beijing denies the unrest in the vast region bordering Central Asia – which last week left at least 35 people dead – is due to ethnic tensions between Uighurs and China’s majority Han.
It has vowed to crack down on “terrorist groups”, ordering military exercises ahead of Friday’s anniversary of major riots in 2009 that left around 200 dead.
But rights groups for the mostly Muslim Uighurs blame unrest on economic inequality and religious repression, and Washington has raised concerns about discrimination.
The People’s Daily, a mouthpiece for the ruling Communist Party, slammed the US government and media for what it said was its role in the violence.
“For fear of a lack of chaos in China,” it said in a commentary, the US was “conspiring to direct the calamity of terrorist activities toward China”.
“America’s double standards on the issue of countering terrorism is no different than incitement and indulgence... How is this different than those who act as accomplices to terrorism?” it said.

Rioters renew violence in Myanmar

Rioters torched two houses in a coastal town in Myanmar’s Rakhine State in the latest violence between Buddhists and minority Muslims, a government spokesman said, but a resident said security forces had restored order on Monday.
At least 237 people have been killed in Myanmar in religious violence over the past year and about 150,000 people have been displaced.
Most of the victims were Muslim and the most deadly incidents happened in Rakhine State, where about 800,000 Rohingya Muslims live, according to the United Nations.

Britain inks billion-dollar deals in ‘strategic’ Kazakhstan

Jul 1, 2013
ASTANA: British Prime Minister David Cameron signed a strategic cooperation agreement as well as $1.0 billion in deals with Kazakhstan on Monday during his first visit to the energy-rich ex-Soviet state.
Cameron and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev also unveiled an oil and gas processing plant on the shores of the Caspian Sea that is meant to provide a new reliable source of energy for European countries.
The British premier played up the importance of Kazakhstan to regional security as he wound down a swing through the region that included visits to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“We’re in a global race for jobs and investment,” Cameron said on Monday. “This is one of the most rapidly emerging countries in the world.”
Western nations have attempted through the two decades since the Soviet Union’s collapse to make gains in a Central Asian region that relies on Russia for its European energy export routes. Cameron added that the two countries had signed a “strategic partnership agreement” that underscored the importance of their growing ties.

'We have a different kind of Islam,' say Bosnia's Muslims
Ferry Biedermann
Jul 1, 2013
SARAJEVO // Sarajevo's many minarets have been meticulously restored in the almost 20 years since Bosnia's devastating war and new ones that have been built are predominantly in the modern Turkish style topped with conical grey roofs.
Foreign interest in Bosnia's once beleaguered Muslim community is evident all around. Saudi Arabia built the largest mosque and Islamic centre in the Balkans in Sarajevo and is helping to fund the new university library. Countries such as Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE have all provided aid and investments.
But attention from Turkey and Arabian Gulf countries has waned since the immediate aftermath of the war.
Despite the signs of the ties that bind Bosnia to Turkey and the wider Muslim world, this Balkan country is firmly rooted in Europe and has outspoken ambitions to join the European Union, ambitions that are thrown into sharp relief today by the accession of neighbouring Croatia.

Libya wants to join European security body
Jul 1, 2013
TRIPOLI — Libya has applied to become a partner of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in a move that, if successful, will mean it will have joined Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco in this Vienna-based body. The OCSE is an intergovernmental organization founded in the Cold War, which works on the premiss that Europe’s security can best be assured by assisting states far beyond its borders to achieve peace and stability. If Libya becomes a partner, it will receive support not simply on security, such as arms and border control, but will also be helped to promote human rights, freedom of the press and fair elections.

Imran Khan’s PTI emerged as the single largest party in KP mainly denting the ANP hopes for returning to the assembly with same strength to continue its rule over the province where militancy-linked violence caused colossal losses.

Indonesia And The Arms Trade Treaty
June 27 2013
It is quite an ambitious goal of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) to transform the global arms trade into a more accountable, open and transparent mechanism.
Although negotiations in the UN started since 1990s, and the following wave of views and recommendations were submitted to the General Assembly from 2006 to 2009, though a number of countries are still reluctant to accept the treaty for several issues.
Despite the different reasons, the objection is principally centered on the obligation of arms exporting states to assess the eligibility of arms importing states in terms of human rights protection, not to mention one-sided and unilateral ways.
