Two-Thirds of Turks Say Gülen Behind the Coup Attempt

‘Hands and legs of those who molested minors and women should be cut off’

Demanding speedy action in the case of rape and murder of a minor girl in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Monday demanded a Sharia-like law to prevent heinous crimes against women and children.

The MNS leader is the latest among the slew of politicians to visit the kin of the victim in Kopardi village.

Mr. Thackeray said the “hands and legs of those who molested and killed minors and women should be cut off.”

“Our legal procedures are cumbersome and the final judgment is a long time in coming. This indirectly boosts the courage of criminals,” he said, adding that there was an urgent need to make the laws more stringent.

Criticising the Devendra Fadnavis government, the MNS leader said such incidents only proved the complete collapse of the law and order mechanism in Maharashtra.

“With the Kopardi crime, the present government is proving itself worse than the past Congress-NCP coalition,” said Mr. Thackeray.

He said there was a pressing need to control the misuse of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Two-thirds of Turks say Gülen behind the coup attempt

26 July, 2016

Almost two thirds of Turks believe U.S.-based Fethullah Gülen was behind a failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, a survey conducted by pollster Andy-Ar showed on Tuesday, backing the government line.

President Tayyip Erdogan says Gülen, who has many followers in Turkey, masterminded the plot, having long accused him of infiltrating the army, police, judiciary, civil service, education and media to control the state.

Turkey wants the United States to extradite Gülen, while Washington has said it will do so only if there is clear evidence.

The Andy-Ar survey showed 64.4 percent of respondents believed Gülen was behind the coup attempt, while 3.8 percent blamed the United States, 3.6 percent foreign powers and 2.2 percent President Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish authorities have launched a series of operations in the armed forces, police, judiciary and education system, targeting followers of Gülen, whose network operates on a secretive structure.

The survey showed 72.6 percent of respondents thought other states supported military officers who carried out the coup, while 78.9 percent viewed the solidarity between Erdogan and opposition leaders during the coup attempt was genuine.

It also showed 83.9 percent of respondents watched Erdogan's initial comments on the night of the coup attempt and that 65.7 percent of people or a relative of theirs went out onto the streets after Erdogan's call to do so.

Asked if they wanted Gülen to be brought to Turkey, 81.5 percent of respondents said 'yes', while 77.7 percent thought Gülen and his sympathisers constitute a threat to the present order and future of Turkey.

The study was done by phone interviews with 1,496 people on July 19, Andy-Ar said.

Military troops loyal to the government, along with police units and millions of Turkish citizens, successfully thwarted a coup attempt, launched by a small military junta linked to the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ).

At least 246 people were killed and over 2,100 injured during the bloody coup attempt.

30 Bangla Facebook Pages, Users Spreading Militant Propaganda

Arifur Rahman Rabbi

26 July, 2016

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has asked the telecom regulators to take all necessary actions to shut down the accounts of 30 Facebook pages and users that have long been circulating extremist and militant propaganda.

A letter on this regard has been sent to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said. Police are now working to find the administrators of these pages.

The DMP chief said the social media accounts were promoting violent ideas and misleading young impressionable men.

He added that such communal provocation and incitement to militancy were criminal offences. Claiming that these activities were being carried out from foreign countries, Asaduzzaman Mia said the government would communicate with Facebook authorities to stop these.

A source in the police said 30 Facebook pages and users were identified by the DMP’s cyber crime unit after social media activities were monitored to trace the sources of extremist ideas.

Seeking anonymity, an official of the cyber crimes unit said there were far more Facebook users and pages spreading militant propaganda than just these 30 accounts, and the BTRC would move to shut them down in phases.

The official added that other blogs and websites were also being used to disseminate militant propaganda.

Some Facebook pages, users, blogs and websites had previously been closed for such reasons, but the militants keep on repeating such practices by creating new pages.

These online platforms were also being used to recruit terrorists, he said. A Home Ministry official said the BTRC has already been told to comply with the police request and take necessary steps.

A source in the BTRC, on the other hand, said the regulators have already sent the account details to Facebook authorities. 'Karachi Mohajirs' demand 'azadi' from oppression by Punjabi-dominated Pakistan military

Jul 26, 2016

While Pakistan sheds crocodile tears over the recent incidents of violence in Kashmir in the aftermath of Hizbul terrorist Burhan Wani’s killing on one hand, the ‘Mohajirs’ of Karachi are demanding liberation from what they call state oppression by Pakistani government as well as the Army.\

Denied justice in their homeland, the Mohajirs are now trying to take the battle to the international platforms.

On Saturday, Mohajir protesters and loyalists of the Pakistani Army clashed with each other in front of the White House in Washington.

Things turned so ugly that American security personnel had to intervene and physically separate the two warring groups.

The protest in front of the White House was led by Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), the group that mostly represents Pakistani migrants from India.

According to a report published in The Times of India, a large demonstration of MQM workers from all across US marched in front of the White House on Saturday.

MQM workers took out the demonstrations after their party convention was addressed via video link by MQM chief Altaf Hussain who is based out of London for the last two decades.

Altaf Hussain and his followers urged the US government to intervene and pressurise the Pakistani government to stop the rampant killing of the Mohajirs by the Punjabi-dominated Pakistan military. MQM accused Pakistani authorities of indulging in "cold-blooded murder" of thousands of party activists.

Altaf Hussain also asked Obama administration to send observers to Karachi for monitoring the large scale humnan rights violation taking place in the city. He said that if US can do it for other countries then it should do the same for Pakistan as well.

Hussain also promised to visit US in October amid speculations that he might shift his base from London.

It should be recalled that Pakistani authorities and political parties have accused Altaf Hussain and his MQM of working at the behest of Indian intelligence agencies despite the fact that the world community has started accepting the fact that the Mohajirs are being harassed indeed by Pakistani Army.

Zakir Naik's IRF’s alleged Islamic State connection makes a strong case for action against preacher

Dinesh Unnikrishnan

Jul 26, 2016

Radical religious preachers who do sermons never begin their discourse saying thus. “Here I’m going to start my indoctrination session to prove that my religion is better than yours. In the next few hours, I’ll do my best to convince you of my idea and ultimately convert you to my religion.”

Instead, they typically play mind games with the enchanted listeners, often selectively quoting (rather twisting) the lines from sacred scriptures, to impose the ultimate idea of religious supremacy in the audience's psyche and ultimately establish why one should embrace that particular religion. This is arguably the trade technique of televangelists such as Zakir Naik.

Turkish Airlines fires 211 staff over 'Gulen links' after coup

AFP | Jul 25, 2016

ISTANBUL: Turkish Airlines said on Monday it had fired 211 employees over suspected links to US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen and behaviour "conflicting with the interest of our country" in the wake of last week's coup.

Turkey's flag carrier said their contracts were terminated due to "the non-fulfillment of performance criteria and in line with the necessary actions we are taking against the FETO structure, attitudes and behaviour conflicting with the interest of our country and company".

The authorities accuse 75-year-old Gulen of running a group it labels the Fethullah Terror Organisation (FETO) that was behind the coup, accusations he strongly denies.

In Glenview, Israeli, Palestinian teens get a window into one another's fractured worlds

26 July, 2016

For the past two weeks, 44 teenagers from Israel, the West Bank and the Chicago area have gathered in Glenview to tell one another their stories.

It's a simple but remarkable notion, at a time when shouting and tweeting appear to have replaced dialogue. It's a balm, at a time when we're told daily to fear those who don't look like us, live like us, worship like us.

It strikes me as the only way forward.

Glenview resident Gretchen Grad helped found Hands of Peace 14 years ago, moved to action by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The program brings together high school students from the Middle East for three weeks of daily dialogue sessions, team-building activities and educational opportunities. The teens stay with host families in and around Glenview, where they often continue their conversations over mealtimes and bedtimes.

'Karachi Mohajirs' demand 'azadi' from oppression by Punjabi-dominated Pakistan military

No orphanage for non-Muslims in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa does not have any orphanages or adoption agencies catering to religious minorities. The same extends to the federally and provincially administered tribal areas. This deprives many people of the joy of raising a child and several orphans of a bright future.

Rabia, a 32-year-old Christian from Peshawar, has been longing to adopt a child for years but with no success. Coping with infertility and society’s pressure, she has visited many orphanages to adopt a child. However, she is always disappointed because Muslim orphanages have rules against letting people from any other religious background adopt children.

Nigeria scraps film village plan after Muslim clerics kick over immorality

By BBC

26 July, 2016

Nigeria's government has cancelled plans to build a "film village" in the northern state of Kano after opposition from Muslim clerics and social media.

More than $10m (£7.6m) had been budgeted to provide state-of-the-art facilities for the Hausa language film industry, known as Kannywood.

The government said the project would create thousands of job opportunities and promote cultural activities.

Muslims clerics have said that the project would promote immorality.

People on social media also called on the government to stop the plan.

Locals have said the project is not a priority - they say the government should instead focus on the revival of dams for agricultural development in the area.

South Sudan President replaces rival with new deputy, threat of war looms large

26 July, 2016

South Sudan President Salva Kiir replaced his vice president and rival Riek Machar on Monday, a move that could potentially undermine last year’s peace deal and reignite war in Africa’s youngest nation.

Machar was sworn in as first vice president only last April, eight months after a peace agreement that ended two years of fighting that broke out the last time that Kiir sacked him as his deputy in 2013.

But the rivalry between the two men led to violence in the capital Juba early this month as forces from both sides battled each other with tanks, helicopters and other heavy weapons.

Machar, from the minority Nuer ethnic group, left Juba with his troops, saying he would only return when an international body had to set up a buffer force between his fighters and those supporting Kiir, leader of the dominant Dinka group.

Thai junta chief eyes halal hub for restive south

NARATHIWAT, Thailand (AFP) - Thailand's junta chief vowed Monday (July 25) to reboot the flagging economy of the kingdom's poor and rebel-hit south, including by making the Muslim-majority region a hub for halal produce.

Thailand's southernmost provinces have been wracked by violence since 2004 that has left over 6,500 people dead and eviscerated the economy which depends heavily on agriculture.

But the near-daily shootings and bombings make few international headlines, while Bangkok is accused of ignoring the region's plight.

UN aid chief urges Security Council to push Aleppo aid access

26 July, 2016

The United Nations aid chief asked the Security Council on Monday to push for a weekly 48-hour humanitarian pause in fighting to allow food and other aid to be delivered to eastern areas of the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Around 250,000 to 275,000 people in rebel-held eastern Aleppo have been cut off since fighting closed the last supply route, the Castello Road, on July 7. UN aid chief Stephen O’Brien said the United Nations and partners had pre-positioned stocks in “sad but all too real anticipation of such developments.”

“But food in east Aleppo is expected to run out by the middle of next month,” O’Brien told the 15-member council. “The international community simply cannot let eastern Aleppo city become yet another, and by far the largest, besieged area.”

The IS-linked Aamaq news agency released the video early Tuesday. The man on the video, his face covered with a black scarf, threatens to make life intolerable and that "we will blow up your homes."

German authorities could not immediately be reached to confirm whether the video was the same as the one found on the cell phone of a 27-year-old Syrian who blew himself Sunday night in the Bavarian town of Ansbach.

Priest's throat slit in French church hostage taking

26 July, 2016

Two assailants slit the throat of an 84-year-old priest at a church in northern France on Tuesday in a hostage-taking drama that has shocked the country.

The attack in the Normandy town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray came as France was still reeling from a massacre in the French Riviera city of Nice claimed by the Islamic State group.

The motivations for the hostage-taking were not yet clear, but the Paris prosecutor's office said the case was being handled by anti-terrorism prosecutors.

Five people were inside the church when it came under attack, interior ministry spokesman Pierre Henry Brandet said.

SAINT-ETIENNE-DU-ROUVRAY, France: French President Francois Hollande said Tuesday that two men who attacked a church and slit the throat of a priest had "claimed to be from Daesh", using the Arabic name for the Islamic State group.

The attack took place during morning mass at the Saint-Etienne parish church, south of Rouen in Normandy. Five people were initially taken hostage.

List of terrorist attacks that have struck Europe in 2016

26 July, 2016

A record number of terrorist attacks were planned, foiled or carried out in European Union countries this year including Nice attack in France, Brussels attack in Belgium, an explosion at an airport in Istanbul and several others.

After a deadly attack in Paris in November last year, once again France was struck by suspected Islamic terrorists in July this year. Time after time, France bears the brunt of terrorism with more people leaving to join the ISIS and other jihadi ranks in Iraq and Syria. According to data released by The International Centre of Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (based on data from second half of 2014) as published in the Wall Street Journal, nearly 1200 people had joined jihadist ranks from France alone in Iraq and Syria, followed by Germany and Britain. Sunday’s late night blast at a restaurant in Ansbach near the German city of Nuremberg is the latest in a string of attacks in Europe.
