By: Niloy Bhattacherjee
AUGUST 21, 2022
In a continuous operation over the past two months,
the Assam Police has unearthed several Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and al
Qaeda modules and sleeper cells that use Madrasa teachers as terror operatives
across the state.
It all began with the arrest of Abbas Ali, 21, an imam
from Pakiuruwa village of Assam’s Goalpara, on July 24 for his alleged links to
the ABT and al Qaeda. The busting of the Goalpura module led to the exposure of
the Morigaon and the Barpeta modules.
The ABT is said to have made inroads in the
north-eastern states of India along the Bangladesh border, particularly in
Assam and Tripura.
Acting on the leads provided by Ali, the Goalpara
police on August 19 picked up Abdus Subahan and Jalaluddin Sheikh, who acted as
conduits for the ABT in Assam. After a day of interrogation, the police
arrested them. Subahan had been serving as an imam in Tinkoniyapara mosque for
two years and also taught at Tinkoniyapara Madrasa, while Sheikh was an imam at
Maitya Tilapara mosque.
“They were directly linked to the Barpeta and Morigaon
modules. In Subahan’s house, we found posters, books, incriminating documents,
secret phones and SIM cards, while Arabic literature was recovered from
Sheikh’s residence. Both were providing logistical support to ABT and AQ,
including sheltering the recruits. They were organising sessions for ABT
operatives from Bangladesh and were handling funding for these events. Sheikh
organised talent hunts for recruitment drives and formation of sleeper cells.
Subahan later confessed that he had joined al-Qaeda in 2018 and Sheikh was his
brother,” said Rakesh Reddy, superintendent of police, Goalpara.
Meanwhile, the search for Abu Tallah, an ABT operative
from Bangladesh, is on. His wife, Johura Khatun, has been arrested by Dhubri
police.
Tallah stayed in Goalpara as an imam of Abu Bakar
Siddique Masjid in Morigaon and also used to teach in Jamiul Huda Madrasa run
by Mufti Mustafa. The Madrasa has been brought down by the government, while
Mufti Mustafa, who was running a sleeper cell for the ABT, is in custody, along
with his wife Asmina Khatun and brother Jakaria Ahmed, said police.
A video of Tallah, along with five other members,
sleeping on a bed perched on a luggage-carrying vehicle has been doing the
rounds. This, sources say, means that they are trying to radicalise more
people. Several others have been arrested from Morigaon, including the
caretaker of Noor Mohamed mosque, where Abu Tallah is said to have taken
shelter.
The arrest of Khatun shows that women, too, are being
used in the ABT operation. The ABT is also using the Dark Web and Dark sites to
get more recruits. Acting on Tallah’s instruction, Khatun, who had studied till
Class 8, operated the Dark Web and destroyed a mobile hand set once the police
crackdown began.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had mentioned that
the radicals associated with the modules use highly sophisticated technology
that even cyber experts find difficult to monitor.
“They have messaging systems with peer-to-peer
encryption, unknown apps for one-time use and deletion and self-destruct
programmes. Their financial transactions have also been in small doses to avoid
suspicion,” he said.
The ABT and AQ operatives in Assam receive money from
certain accounts in Bangladesh and other foreign countries in tranches
frequently, he added.
On August 2, the Assam Police arrested another person
in Barpeta district for alleged link with the ABT; previously, nine more
persons with links to jihadi organisations were arrested, along with one
Sofique Uddin Ahmed. On July 28, the Assam Police detained 11 persons on
suspicion of having ties to terrorist groups. Several electronic devices and
incriminating documents were also recovered from their possession.
“…It has been proved beyond reasonable doubt that
Assam is becoming a hotbed for Islamic fundamentalists. When you bust five
modules and the whereabouts of the other five Bangladeshi nationals are still
not known, you can imagine the gravity,” Sarma told a press conference.
“We are on a mission to completely uproot the jihadi
network in Assam and steady progress is been made in the right direction,” said
Ashok Singhal, Urban Development Minister of Assam.
As per police sources, the search for the five
Bangladeshi nationals is on. The Union Home Minister, too, has alerted the
Director General of Police of the state, which shares international border with
Bangladesh, to be on alert on the rise of radicalisation in the border
districts.

Al-Aqsa Mosque To Remain Centre Of Anti-Zionist
Resistance: Iranian Spokesman

Aug 21, 2022
In a tweet on Sunday, Nasser Kan'ani wrote, “53 years
ago on August 21, 1969, the Zionists set fire to Al-Aqsa Mosque, the first
Qibla of Muslims, and this was not the first and last crime of the occupiers of
Palestine.”
He described resistance as the only way to save
Palestine, adding that Al-Aqsa Mosque and all mosques in the world will remain
the centre of anti-Zionist resistance until the complete liberation of
Palestine.
On August 21, 1969, the mosque was set on fire by an
Australian settler in coordination with Israeli officials and military forces.
The fire gutted the southeastern wing of the mosque.

Hamas, Islamic Jihad condemn and reject Israeli
incitement campaign against President Abbas
President Mahmoud Abbas.
-----
20/August/2022
GAZA, Saturday, August 20, 2022 (WAFA) – Hamas and the
Islamic Jihad movements today strongly condemned and rejected the Israeli-led
incitement campaign against President Mahmoud Abbas following his remarks at a
press conference last week in Germany.
Husam Badran, a spokesman for Hamas, said in a
statement that Hamas rejects and condemns the German Police’s announcement of
opening an investigation into President Mahmoud Abbas in light of his remarks
relating to the crimes of the Israeli occupiers against the Palestinian people.
“Once again,” Badran added, “the international powers
prove their bias towards the Israeli occupation and their denial of the
historical rights of our Palestinian people, and their suffering for more than
seven decades, which began with the uprooting of our people from their land and
forcing them to live as refugees in exile. This is in addition to dozens of
massacres against Palestinian civilians, women, children and others, and the
arrest and injury of hundreds of thousands of our people over the years.”
The Hamas official said that no matter how these
powers try to distort the truth and turn a deaf ear about what has befallen the
Palestinian people and deal in double standards, they will not obliterate the
Palestinian narrative, no matter how long it takes, and they do.
Khaled al-Batsh, a senior official of the Islamic
Jihad, also denounced in a press statement the German Police’s opening of an
investigation against President Mahmoud Abbas, considering what President Abbas
had said “is part of the national Palestinian narrative that our people are
defending against the entire world in order to expose the crimes of the
occupiers.”

Imran Fires ‘Warning Shots’ At Police And Judiciary
This image shows PTI chief

Staff Reporter
August 21, 2022
ISLAMABAD: After threatening to file cases against the
police, bureaucracy, the Election Commission of Pakistan and political opponents
over the treatment allegedly meted out to his chief of staff, Pakistan
Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday warned the judiciary
against its “biased” attitude towards his party, saying that it should brace
itself for the consequences.
Despite the imposition of Section 144 of CrPC and
Section 16 of the MPO in the federal capital, a large number of residents came
out to attend the rally led by Mr Khan. The procession started from Zero Point
and reached F-9 Park where the party leadership and their ally, former minister
Sheikh Rashid, also addressed the participants.
Addressing a party rally in the capital’s F-9 park to
express solidarity with embattled leader Dr Shahbaz Gill, Mr Khan called out
Additional District and Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry, who had approved Mr
Gill’s two-day physical remand at the request of the capital police, and said
she should prepare herself as action would be taken against her.
He also pointed out that there was no action against
Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Defence Minister
Khwaja Asif, who he claimed had also made statements against the armed forces.
He said if a case could be registered against Gill, the PTI would file cases
against “everyone”, including former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior
Minister Rana Sanaullah.
Mr Khan again called on the “neutrals” (a euphemism he
uses for the military establishment) to stand with the nation rather than the
“gang of thieves”, in reference to the ruling coalition. He said he wanted to
ask the neutrals if they were “really neutral”. He also alleged that the
Islamabad police was taking orders for action against his party leaders from
‘someone’.
“When I asked the police to ‘tell me what did you do
to Shahbaz Gill’, they said ‘we did nothing, we got a boot from behind to
follow orders’,” he said while announcing to move the Supreme Court against the
alleged torture on Gill.
Moreover, he alleged that when the PTI-backed
government in Punjab started taking action against police officials involved in
torturing party workers on May 25 during their long march, the authorities got
scared as they started receiving calls asking them not to touch the law
enforcers.
On the other hand, the PTI chief said, Gill was caught
and tortured to send a message and frighten people that if he could be broken
mentally then anyone could be. About his decision to hold the rally on a
24-hour notice, Khan said it was because Gill was being treated inhumanely and
restrictions were imposed on the service of ARY News.
At the end, the former premier announced that he would
present a roadmap to the public in the party’s rally at Rawalpindi’s Liaquat
Bagh on Sunday (today), adding he planned to take to the streets across the
country from today. “I’m going to take the nation along and tell them,
including children and women, that Pakistan cannot become the country it was
meant to be as envisioned by Allama Iqbal and Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah
until we break the shackles of slavery,” he concluded the rally.
After Mr Khan’s speech, the electronic media regulator
slapped a ban on all satellite TV channels from carrying the PTI chief’s
speeches live. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra)
communiqué – issued late at night – held that channels had failed to implement
a time-delay mechanism which could curtail such occurrences.
In a four-page document that included a specific
reference to Mr Khan’s speech on Saturday night, where he had targeted police
and judicial officers, the regulator said that only recorded speeches could be
telecast, and those too would only be allowed if a time-delay mechanism was in
place.
Although the order was not posted on Pemra’s official
Twitter account at the time of going to print, a senior government functionary
confirmed its authenticity.
In a separate statement, PML-N, PPP, MQM Pakistan and
JUI-F called on the judiciary to take legal action against Imran and his aides
for threatening a female judge and intimidating police officers, APP reported.

Beyond Religious Barriers, This Kerala Muslim,
Sirajudeen P, Teaches Bharatanatyam
21st August 2022
By Ajith Kannan
KOZHIKODE: Born into an orthodox family, Sirajudeen P
was bound to follow all religious customs. That he did with fervour. But
practising a temple artform? That was something none of his family members
could possibly have imagined. His irrepressible desire to learn Bharatanatyam,
however, impelled him to break all religious barriers and begin dance practice
at 15. And he has gone on to master kuchipudi, mohiniyattam and perani natyam
as well.
Now 42, this passionate dance teacher from Vadakara,
popular as Siraj, has trained more than 1,500 students belonging to various
age-groups over the years despite criticism from many religious outfits. “After
the SSLC exams, I told my mother of my wish to learn bharatanatyam,” Siraj recalls.
“Instantly, she replied ‘no’, claiming that dance is restricted in our
religion.”

Lawsuit Brews Over SF School Board Decision To Close
Schools on Two Muslim Holidays
By Evan Symon
August 19, 2022
A decision earlier this month by the San Francisco
School Board to allow two days off this year for two Islamic holy days in April
and June faced multiple new legal challenges this week as many parental,
religious, and legal groups have fought back against what many see as an
illegal action.
On August 9th, at the behest of many Muslim and Arab
community groups, the School Board voted 5-1 to close all schools and offices
on the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha holy
days beginning during the 2023-2024 school year. According to the resolution,
the measure will “foster an environment of diversity and tolerance,” make
Muslim students feel more accepted, prevent Muslim students from missing class
due to religious issues, and ensure that the schools will “maintain equal
access to educational opportunities.”
