The book, titled ‘Spaida-e-Sehr Aur Timtamata Chiragh’ would not be allowed in the province and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government orders “all copies of the book to be forfeited... with immediate effect,” a statement from the provincial government read. “The book has the potential to provoke the religious feelings of the public,” the statement said.

CID office blast kills 20 in Karachi

Nov 12, 2010

* Explosive-laden truck blows up inside department’s head office located in red zone

KARACHI: At least 30 persons were killed and over one hundred injured, some critically, when an explosive-laden truck blew up inside the head office of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), which is located inside the main red zone of the city, on Thursday night, destroying everything around it and completely destroying the building.

The intensity of the blast was so severe that it was heard in a 15-kilometre radius, destroying many of the high rises and shanty settlements in its path. The blast left a 10 to 15 feet wide crater at the spot. According to bomb disposal experts around 1,000kg explosive was used in the blast filling the entire area with smoke.

Witnesses and police said the building collapsed trapping people under the rubble.

The red zone also include the CM House, Governor House, Qaiser Naz, three luxury hotels, the US Consulate and government offices.

City Police Chief Fayyaz Laghari told Daily Times that a truck loaded with explosives managed to penetrate the security checkpoints of the CID operation’s office after an intense exchange of fire. The police chief termed the incident a reaction to arrest of terrorist affiliated with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi that the CID made the day before (Wednesday). The gunmen first resorted to heavy firing on the office of the CID before detonating a massive explosive-laden truck, Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza told journalists at the site of explosion. He said that the blast was similar to the blast at the Marriott in Islamabad.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak told journalists that a truck bearing a Peshawar registration number reached the main gate of the CID building, where at least 20 suspects came out from the truck and started firing for at least 10 minutes. Later, they threw crackers inside the CID building, killing the security guards deployed at the main gate.

The provincial police chief said the terrorists later entered the premises of the building and detonated the vehicle. He said that due to the blast, the residential area around the CID office was also severely damaged. The IG could not confirm whether any of the attackers had died in the explosion, but said that senior officials of the CID managed to survive the incident.

The building has a detention facility that was believed to be holding criminals and possible militants. “We heard different rounds of firing for several minutes and then a deafening explosion,” said a witness covered in dust. “The roof of our house collapsed.”

A police constable, who survived the attack, said the entire operation was so swift that the police had no time to react. “The terrorists blew their truck by the time we reached our guns to fight them off,” he said without giving his name.

Ambulances and rescue teams rushed to the blast site and shifted the bodies and injured to the Jinnah and civil hospitals, where an emergency has been declared. Heavy earth moving machineries have been called to remove the debris and search for possible survivors.

In-charge of the Jinnah Hospital’s emergency, Dr Seemi Jamali, confirmed receiving 10 bodies along with 90 injured. The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility of the attack, according to television channels.

Karachi is Pakistan’s economic capital, home to the country’s stock exchange and the Arabian Sea port where NATO supplies dock to be trucked overland to support the more than 150,000 US-led troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

US missile salvo kills six in North Waziristan

Nov 12, 2010

* Several unmanned US aircraft target a group of terrorists in Gulli Khel village

* Terrorists were returning on foot from an insurgent bastion in Afghanistan

MIRANSHAH: A salvo of US missiles targeted militants in the Tribal Areas on Thursday, killing six terrorists returning from an insurgent bastion in Afghanistan, security officials said.

Six missiles slammed into the group in North Waziristan. The missiles targeted the group about 12 kilometres from North Waziristan’s main town of Miranshah, in an area that borders Khost in eastern Afghanistan, a hotbed of insurgents fighting US-led troops. “Several unmanned US aircraft fired six missiles targeting militants in Gulli Khel village near the Ghulam Khan district of North Waziristan,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

He said the militants had been returning on foot from Afghanistan, although a local intelligence source in Miranshah said the US missiles targeted a compound of militants from the Haqqani network. Thursday’s strike was the second this week, after a similar operation killed at least nine suspected terrorists near Miranshah on Sunday. Around 220 people have been killed in more than 40 strikes since September 3 straining relations with Islamabad already tense over reported US criticism of Pakistan’s failure so far to launch a ground offensive in North Waziristan.

The covert US drone campaign in Pakistan dramatically increased in September as intelligence claims emerged of a Mumbai-style terror plot to launch commando attacks in European cities. The campaign is also seen as integral to US-led efforts to turn around a nine-year Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan. Afghan and US officials allege that militants with rear bases in Pakistan enjoy at least some measure of protection from the Pakistani intelligence services – charges that Islamabad denies. During a recent visit to India, President Barack Obama said Islamabad was making progress on tackling what he called the “cancer” of extremism but it was not happening quickly enough

Woman, minor daughter killed in Taliban attack

Nov 12, 2010

PESHAWAR: A woman and her minor daughter were killed in a Taliban attack on Adezai anti-Taliban Lashkar early on Thursday, police and locals said. Matani Police Station Muharir Hijabullah told Daily Times that the Taliban attacked Adezai village with rockets at 2am. He said that one rocket hit the house of Rajwali, a member of an anti-Taliban Lashkar, in which his wife and a minor daughter were killed. He said that four other villagers were also injured in the attack. It was the Taliban’s first attack on Adezai anti-Taliban Lashkar after security forces’ operation in suburbs of Peshawar and the Frontier Regions (FR) some two months ago. Adezai lashkar chief, Dilawar Khan, told Daily Times that a woman and her minor daughter were killed in the Taliban attack. He said about 40 men armed with sophisticated weapons, including rockets, attacked the village from some distance. He said the terrorists wanted to destroy his and other key lashkar members’ houses, but the lashkar retaliated forcing them to flee.

Malaysia to teach safe sex in schools next year

Nov 11 2010

Kuala Lumpur : Malaysian schools will start holding sex education classes next year, an official said Thursday, as part of efforts to curb unwanted pregnancies among young teenagers.

Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong said male and female students in this Muslim-majority country will start with very basic weekly classes in the first grade. Eventually students will learn about menstrual cycles, sexually transmitted diseases and family planning.

"The most important is to create awareness and how to have self-protection. The young are exposed to all kinds of threats, especially when they go to a party," Wee told The Associated Press.

10, including three NATO troops, killed in Afghanistan

11 November 2010

KABUL: A string of attacks across Afghanistan killed 10 people, including three NATO service members and five Afghan policemen, officials said on Wednesday.

A suicide car bomber blew himself up Wednesday afternoon at a bazaar in Khost province in the country’s east, killing a policeman and an Afghan soldier, provincial police chief Abdul Hakim Eshaqzai said. Four others were injured in the attack in the Dwa Mandala district.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the insurgent group was responsible for the attack, which targeted foreigners. He said 14 people were killed and nine others were wounded, but the Taliban regularly exaggerate casualties caused by their attacks.

In the north, four policemen were killed in an ambush on Tuesday night as they were driving through Imam Sahib district along the border with Tajikistan, said Muhbobullah Sayedi, a spokesman for the governor of Kunduz province. Violence is on the rise in northern Afghanistan, where pockets of Taliban insurgents are increasingly targeting government workers.

Turkey: Proposed mandatory Islamic values in Turkish schools

By Claudia

11 November 2010

As the majority of Islamic scholars say, secularism is not possible, as that would be against “Allah’s decree”:

The values taught in Turkish schools should be based on “faith in God” and delivered using the terminology of Islam, said a committee of the Board of Education, creating concern among educators in the country. Several committees within the Council have announced proposals for reform that would affect the length of compulsory education, and the fact that classes are or are not mixed. Although the proposals must then be adopted by the General Council, many fear the tendency to impose an Islamic ideology on the national education system.Among the various proposals under discussion is one to change the current system (eight years of uninterrupted primary education) into one divided into two parts, to allow younger students to attend religious vocational school (iman-hatin).

Repression of women in Bahrain under Sharia Law

11 November 2010

Few weeks back, I received an email en messe from a Bahraini woman name Nawal, who brought specific allegations of serious repression by her own brother, who is a judge in country's Sharia court. Generally I do not entertain any mail which is sent en messe, but as the topic was important, I wrote her back asking more specific information and some clarifications. Subsequently, she got back to me with the required information and we spoke over phone for a number of times before writing this article.

Ms. Nawal's brother holds a position in country's Sharia court which gives the absolute right to the man in depriving his sisters from family's wealth as well use such influence in putting various forms of repressive tactics on the entire family. This judge even visibly grabbed family's property by using his position as the judge. Though the government of Bahrain has formed a special office to address the issues related to corruption inside country's judiciary and Sharia courts, such bodies are also seen inactive as in most cases, such special bodies are influences by the judges facing allegations.

Bin Laden picks new terror war chief in strategy switch

By Praveen Swami in London

November 11 2010

Osama bin Laden has appointed a new commander to spearhead al-Qa'ida's offensive against the West.

Known to Western intelligence services by the alias Saif al-Adel, or "Sword of the Just", al-Qa'ida's new chief of international operations is believed to have conceived the wave of planned strikes that set off terrorism alerts across Europe recently, as well as last month's mid-air parcel bomb plot.

American and Pakistani sources have disclosed that al-Adel is running several similar operations as part of a war of attrition to persuade Western public opinion that the war against terrorism is unwinnable. This would clear the road for al-Qa'ida to capture power in fragile states such as Somalia and Yemen.

Suspects held in French raids 'plotted terror attack'

November 11 2010

Five suspects arrested in and around Paris were French Islamists planning a terror attack, French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux has said.

The five were detained on suspicion of having trained as militants in the Afghan-Pakistan border region, security sources said at the time.

But Mr Hortefeux said only one of the five had visited Afghanistan while others had planned to go to Pakistan.

One of the four men and one woman had been ready to die, he added.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden warned France last month that its planned ban on the Islamic full-face veil in public places and its involvement in the war in Afghanistan justified attacks on its nationals.

Ilyas Kashmiri one of world's most dangerous men

Nov 11, 2010

WASHINGTON: Counter-terrorism officials on three continents consider Ilyas Kashmiri, leader of an anti-India Pakistani terror group, as one of the most dangerous men in the world, according to CNN. Kashmiri considers India his number one enemy. His group was thought responsible for the bombing of a bakery popular with foreigners in Pune in 2009. But there is plenty of evidence he has ambitions beyond South Asia, the US TV channel said.

"He has one eye, a thick beard streaked with henna and has lost a finger. He wears thick aviator-style dark glasses," it said Wednesday citing sources. There are very few photographs of 40-something.

Give Pak govt more time to rein in LeT, JuD: Musharraf

Nov 11 2010

Washington : Acknowledging that LeT and like-minded groups such as Jamaat-ud-Dawa were involved in terrorism, former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said these outfits needed to be reined in, but in a gradual manner.

The Pakistan government and the country's intelligence agencies should be given time to move against these groups so as "not to rock the boat" as he claimed these groups enjoyed popular support in his country for their anti-India activities.

"You can't rock the boat so much that the boat capsizes. So therefore, while these things have to be done, allow piecemeal, gradual action through a well thought-out strategy which does not disturb the entire law-and-order situation in Pakistan," the former Pakistan military dictator said, as he warned that taking any strong action against terrorist outfits like LeT and JuD, would create a massive law and order problem in Pakistan.

At home in Indonesia, Obama reaches out to Muslims

11 November 2010

JAKARTA: In the Muslim nation that was his boyhood home, President Barack Obama acknowledged Wednesday that US relations are still frayed with the Islamic world despite his best efforts at repair. He urged all sides to look beyond “suspicion and mistrust” to forge common ground against terrorism.

Forcefully returning to a theme he sounded last year in visits to Turkey and Egypt, Obama said: “I have made it clear that America is not and never will be at war with Islam. ... Those who want to build must not cede ground to terrorists who seek to destroy.” Beaming with pride, Obama delivered perhaps the most intensely personal speech of his presidency, speaking phrases in Indonesian to a cheering crowd of more than 6,000 mostly young people who claimed him as their own. It felt oddly like one of the campaign speeches Obama had been giving in the US, with music blaring over speakers inside the auditorium.

The Stupidity of Saudi Senior Clerics

The most recent misogynist fatwa prohibiting women to work as cashiers that was issued by Saudi Arabia's "wise" governing body of clerics, might be a blessing in disguise because it could, most ironically, help advance the cause of women's rights throughout the Saudi Kingdom.

The whirlwind of publicity surrounding the edict has severely accentuated the clerical council's base philistine degeneracy and ignorance while eroding the group's credibility in the eyes of the devout, which can hopefully lead to an undermining of its repressive authority. At least we can hope.

UN Women is the amalgamation of different United Nations bodies focused on women. It was created this year to look exclusively at gender equality and empowerment of women.

The 41-member executive board also includes United States and Britain, which won seats in the donor nations category.

Why Arab and Muslim Are Not Synonymous

I share this obviousness with you because of an engaging paragraph that came my way in the course of my morning New York Times reading routine. In the course of a decent article on the famous Arab poet known as Adonis, originally from Syria but now based in Paris, I found this fun paragraph:

Muhammad would ask for tolerance

Now that the brouhaha has passed regarding Pastor Terry Jones' proposed Quran burning stunt and a few instances of angry protests overseas and death threats that accompanied, I've asked myself the question of what would Prophet Muhammad do today if alive and confronted with such expressions of intolerance.

In his lifetime, Prophet Muhammad endured with forbearance similar challenges such as Pastor Jones' saying "Islam is evil." Prophet Muhammad was routinely called a fraud by his tribesmen in Mecca, who wrote poetry vilifying him and even attempted to assassinate him in his bedroom.

'Little mosque on the tundra' opens

11 November 2010

The new mosque in Inuvik, N.W.T., sits next to a 10-metre minaret topped with a crescent moon.

One of the world's most northerly mosques has opened in Inuvik, N.W.T., where the Arctic town's growing Muslim community is celebrating its new place of worship.

Affectionately being dubbed "the little mosque on the tundra," Inuvik's mosque and community centre officially opened at a ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

The beige mosque has made a 4,000-kilometre journey by road and river from Manitoba, where it was built, through two provinces and the Northwest Territories to the Arctic town.

While not the first mosque in Inuvik, a town of about 3,200 people, the new building is a significant improvement from the small one-bedroom trailer local Muslims prayed in during the past decade.

Christians Should Oppose the Muslim Face Veil Ban

David Johnston, author of Earth, Empire and Sacred Text, Christine Schirrmacher, a scholar with the Institute of Islamic Studies of the Evangelical Alliance in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and Joseph Cumming, director of the reconciliation program at Yale Divinity School, discuss whether Christians should support laws that ban Muslim women from wearing the face veil in public.

Recent efforts in Europe to ban the face veil (the niqab or burqa) are not so much concerned with women's rights and security as they are with obtaining votes from an electorate that is increasingly xenophobic and anxious about national identity.

The Wrong Way to Combat 'Islamophobia'

By PAULA SCHRIEFER

11 November 2010

This week, member states of the United Nations will vote on what has become an annual resolution, “On Combating Defamation of Religions,” put forward by the Organization of the Islamic Conference, a group of 57 states with large Islamic populations. The resolution condemns what it calls “defamation of religions” — a vague notion that can perhaps best be described as a form of expression that offends another’s religious sensibilities — and urges countries to enact laws that prohibit such forms of expression. The resolutions are part of a larger and dangerous campaign to create a global blasphemy law to combat what Muslim leaders refer to as “Islamophobia.”

The most interesting part of the story in Turkey

By Mustafa Akyol

11 November 2010

Since the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in Turkey in late 2002, the media have had a hard time finding an apt word to define it. While the AKP insists on calling itself “conservative” and emphatically underlines that it is “not a religious party,” popular definitions adopted by the press include “mildly Islamic,” “pro-Islamic,” “Islamic-leaning” and, in more critical accounts, simply “Islamist.”

But if Islamism is the ideology, and the program is to establish an “Islamic state” that will impose Sharia law and ban “unIslamic” practices in a society, then the AKP really has good reasons to be exempted from that definition.

This is not that hard to see. To begin with, life in today’s Turkey is no more “Islamic” than eight years ago. There are no fewer bars, night clubs, alcohol-serving restaurants or bikini-rich beaches. Big cities such as Istanbul are actually more cosmopolitan and hedonistic than ever.

What we think about when we think about Islam

11 November 2010

Asia Bibi. Say the name out loud. I'll be getting back to her. Juan Williams was fired from NPR for speaking frankly about the fears that terrorism breeds in ordinary people. William's remarks were in the context of a faux pas by Bill O'Reilly. On ABC's The View, O'Reilly said that Muslims attacked us on 9/11. That caused Joy Behar and Whoppi Goldberg to walk off the set.

It could have been worse. From Nina Shea and Paul Marshall in the Hudson Institute:

Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders was threatened with criminal punishment for hate speech from the moment his anti-Koran film Fitna hit the internet in March 2008. Last month, a Dutch judicial oversight body ordered that he be tried anew after finding that judges in the first round of court proceedings appeared to be biased. Even if Mr. Wilders is ultimately acquitted, as his prosecutors themselves urge, he will have already been punished by years of costly and tiring legal wrangling.

Jihad by Stoning

Aaron Goldstein

11 November 2010

Perhaps the most telling moment so far of President Obama's overseas trip to Southeastern Asia occurred while he was addressing students at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, India. During a question and answer period which followed the President's remarks, a female student asked Obama's views about jihad. Here is a portion of the President Obama's reply to that question:

Well, the phrase jihad has a lot of meanings within Islam and is subject to a lot of different interpretations. But I will say that, first, Islam is one of the world's great religions. And more than a billion people who practice Islam, the overwhelming majority view their obligations to their religion as ones that reaffirm peace and justice and fairness and tolerance. I think all of us recognize that this great religion in the hands of a few extremists has been distorted to justify violence towards innocent people that is never justified.

Western diplomats have made clear they want Iran to address their concerns about Tehran’ nuclear program in talks that the United States, France, Russia, Britain, Germany and China have offered Tehran later this month.

“We have repeatedly said that our (nuclear) rights are not negotiable ... We only hold talks to resolve international problems ... to help the establishment of peace,” Ahmadinejad said in a televised speech in central town of Qazvin.

Nazis 'paid for 30% of war with stolen Jewish cash'

11 November 2010

London : Adolf Hitler-led Nazis looted Europe's Jews so much that it were the latter who financed 30 per cent of the German war effort, say researchers.

A new study by the German finance ministry has found that Nazi officials plundered 120 billion reichsmarks -- more than 12 billion pounds -- by looting and through confiscation laws, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

The study was carried out to uncover its crimes while the Nazis were in power, from 1933 to 1945.

Hans-Peter Ullmann, a Cologne University history professor who is heading the three-year investigation, said that under the Nazis the tax authorities "actively worked to destroy Jews financially".

Iraqi PM to stay on as political deadlock ends

Nov 11 2010

Baghdad : Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will return to power for another four-year term after Iraqi lawmakers working late into the night on Wednesday agreed on a tentative deal to form a new government, lawmakers said.

The deal breaks an eight-month impasse that paralysed the government, encouraged insurgent attacks and rattled potential foreign investors. The Sunni-backed secular coalition, which had vehemently opposed al-Maliki, finally resigned itself to serving in his government along with the other main political groups.

"Finally, fortunately, it's done. It's finished. All the groups are in it," said Kurdish lawmaker Mahmoud Othman, who took part in the nearly seven hours of negotiations Wednesday following talks the previous two days.

Obama did not speak enough on Pak-backed terror: VHP

11 November 2010

New Delhi : The VHP on Wednesday said it was disappointed that US President Barack Obama did not "speak enough" on terrorism emanating from Pakistan and that the global menace could have been checked if he had made any utterance.

"It is disappointing that the visiting US President did not speak enough on terrorism emanating from Pakistan. If he had done so, it could have helped in checking the global menace," VHP international general secretary Pravin Togadia told reporters here.

The government should ensure during its talks with the US that issues concerning agriculture, retail marketing, education, outsourcing were all India-centric, he said.

"Regarding issues like outsourcing and terrorism...Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should take a stand," the VHP leader demanded.

Don't equate RSS with terror’

Nov 11, 2010

LUCKNOW: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday sought to shield the sangh from being projected as a terror outfit by virtually disowning those named in the Ajmer blast case.

"There is a deliberate design to implicate RSS functionaries. Certain Hindu names did crop up during investigation into the Ajmer bomb blast but not every Hindu is a member of the RSS,'' he said and added that there was also a possibility that the alleged accused may have worked with the RSS at some point of time and were shown the door later.

Slamming the Centre for unleashing a campaign to project RSS as a terror outfit, Mohan Bhagwat declared that "the ongoing trial by fire would help sangh emerge stronger and brighter."

Obama has overlooked Pakistan: Musharraf

11 November 2010

LAHORE: President Barack Obama should have added Pakistan to his Asia trip, given the central role Pakistan is playing in the war in Afghanistan, former president Pervez Musharraf said on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“One would have preferred that he should have gone to Pakistan to give due importance to Pakistan, which is fighting extremism and terrorism in a lead role and being a strategic partner with the US on this issue,” Musharraf said. “So some importance should have been given to Pakistan.”

Musharraf’s comments came as Obama wrapped up his Asia trip in Indonesia, his childhood home. Obama spent three days in India, where he became the first US president to endorse India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
