Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan Defends RSS Chief's
Remarks On Muslims, “They Must Abandon Their Boisterous Rhetoric Of
Supremacy"
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan
14th January 2023
By PTI
ALIGARH: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on
Saturday sought to dispel certain misgivings emanating from a recent statement of
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, stressing that it only meant that no one has the right
to claim supremacy on the basis of his birth.
Khan said this while replying to a reporter's question
on the sidelines of a function organised by the Sir Syed Memorial Society At
the Aligarh Habitat Centre here.
He was asked about Bhagwat's comments in an interview
published in "Organiser" and "Panchjanya" that
"Muslims have nothing to fear in India, but they must abandon their
boisterous rhetoric of supremacy".
"Bhagwat only emphasised that our social
behaviour should be in resonance with the Constitution, which is based on
equality of all sections and does not believe in superiority or
inferiority," he added.
"There are social disparities in our society, but
equality is our cherished ideal and an aspiration that is deeply reflected in
the Constitution and is, in fact, one of the pillars of the Constitution,"
the Kerala governor said.
In the interview, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS) chief had said, "The simple truth is this -- Hindustan should remain
Hindustan. There is no harm to the Muslims living in Bharat today. Islam has
nothing to fear. But at the same time, Muslims must abandon their boisterous
rhetoric of supremacy".
Replying to another question, Khan strongly denied
that Bhagwat had in any way implied that "Muslims should be relegated to
the status of second-class citizens in the country".
Referring to the reported threat of some Aligarh
Muslim University (AMU) students planning to stage a black-flag demonstration
against his visit to Aligarh, the Kerala governor said, "To the best of my
knowledge, there was no such protest against my visit to Aligarh on Saturday.
There were some social media posts to this effect on Friday, but that did not
take place".
Earlier, addressing the function to commemorate the
birth anniversary of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, Khan
said he had a special bond with the late leader since 1977, when he was elected
as a Janata Party MLA from Bulandshahr district and Singh was the health
minister of Uttar Pradesh in the first Janata Party government in the state.
"Kalyan Singh was not just an important political
leader of his time but his main achievement was that he was looked upon as a
champion of the downtrodden section of the society who always sought to remove
social disparities," Khan said.

Palestine, Al-Quds Still First Issues Of Islamic
World: Palestinian Resistance Groups
Jan 15, 2023
TEHRAN, Jan. 15 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a meeting with the representatives of Palestinian
Resistance groups in Syria stressed that Palestine and the holy al-Quds are
still the first issues of the Islamic world.
-----------
During his visit to Damascus, the Iranian top diplomat
held a meeting with a group of officials and prominent members of various Palestinian
Resistance groups on Saturday night.
Considering the holding of such a meeting with the
presence of Palestinian Resistance groups representatives in the Syrian capital
as a great unity in support of Palestine, Amir Abdollahian stated that until
the Palestinian government is formed throughout the historical land of
Palestine, Palestine will continue to be the first issue of the Islamic world,
he added.
Saying that the US and its allies through the past
years have used different plans against Palestine, Amir-Abdollahian praised the
Palestinian nation and Resistance groups for foiling their plots.
"Operation Sword al-Quds proved that the
Resistance and Palestine are alive," the top Iranian diplomat continued,
adding that even the World Cup showed that Palestine is alive and the
normalization of Arab-Israeli relations is not worth a penny.
Referring to the formation of a new government in the
Occupied Palestinian territories, Amir-Abdollhian cited, "In Occupied
Palestine, changing names and faces does not change anything, but the officials
of the Zionist regime move from one extremist to another, which its cause is
the dense security and social crises in Israel." He added that these
extremists will cause greater cohesion between the Resistance and the Palestinian
nation.
Referring to his recent meetings with Seyyed Hassan
Nasrallah and Ziad al-Nakhaleh, the Iranian foreign minister stressed that the
Resistance is enjoying the best situation.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Amir-Abdollahian touched
upon the recent conspiracies of the West against Iran and said that some
parties tried to weaken the Islamic Republic of Iran by benefiting from the
recent riots with interventions but the wise nation of Iran foiled their plots.

Tens of thousands of Israelis protest against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government
15 January 2023
Israel Politics. Picture: PA
-------
Tens of thousands of Israelis have protested plans by
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new government to overhaul the legal system
and weaken the Supreme Court — a step that critics say will destroy the
country’s democratic system of checks and balances.
The protest presented an early challenge to Mr
Netanyahu and his ultranationalist national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir,
who has ordered police to take tough action if protesters block roads or
display Palestinian flags.
Israeli media, citing police, said the crowd at Tel
Aviv’s Habima Square swelled to at least 80,000 people, despite cool, rainy
weather.
Protesters, many covered by umbrellas, held Israeli
flags and signs saying “Criminal Government”, “The End of Democracy” and other
slogans.
“They are trying to destroy the checks and balances of
the Israeli democracy. This will not work,” said Asaf Steinberg, a protester
from the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya.
In office for just over two weeks, his government,
which is comprised by ultra-Orthodox and far-right nationalist parties, has
launched proposals to weaken the Supreme Court by giving parliament the power
to overturn court decisions with a simple majority vote.
Israeli lawyers hold signs during a protest against
the government’s plans to overhaul the country’s legal system outside the
District Court in Tel Aviv
Critics say will the proposed changes will weaken the
country’s judiciary and imperil its democratic system of checks and balances
(Oded Balilty/AP)
Israeli opposition leaders, former attorney generals
and the president of Israel’s Supreme Court have all spoken out against the
plan.
The legal changes could help Mr Netanyahu, who is on
trial for corruption, evade conviction, or even make his trial disappear
entirely.
Israeli media quoted police as saying officers had
been instructed to be “very sensitive” and allow the protest to proceed
peacefully, but they also vowed a tough response to any vandalism or violent
behavior.

Hate Speech Rises On Twitter In Its Largest
Markets Outside The United States After
Musk Takeover
By Gerry Shih
January 14, 2023
More than 75 percent of Twitter's 280 million daily
users live outside North America. The cuts in its moderation efforts have hit
them hardest. (Brendan Mcdermid/Reuters)
-----------
SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk’s overhaul of Twitter has
been accompanied by an increase in digital harassment of religious and ethnic
minorities in some of its largest markets outside the United States — and it’s
beginning to wreak havoc in the physical world as well, according to current
and former employees and experts studying the issue.
Musk has fired or accepted resignations from about
three-fourths of Twitter’s employees since his $44 billion takeover at the end
of October. He has also terminated thousands of contractors who were monitoring
the site for slurs and threats.
Those cuts went deepest outside North America, where
more than 75 percent of the company’s 280 million daily users live and where
Twitter already had fewer moderators who understood local languages and
cultural references and where the political landscape could be chaotic and
prone to violence.
Musk also welcomed back thousands of banned accounts,
including many suspended for promoting hate or violence, even as he has
personally has tweeted misinformation and interacted with far-right accounts.
Sensing an opportunity, if not a welcome, political operatives and
attention-seeking profiteers have rushed to fill the vacuum that the drop in
moderation efforts has left, employees said.
That has changed the tenor of the site in its No. 2
market, Japan, where nearly 59 million are estimated to use the site, and made
it more fraught in India (nearly 24 million users) and Brazil (nearly 20
million), the third and fourth largest markets, according to current and former
staff and researchers. Musk cut virtually all staff in Brazil, allowing an
unmoderated surge in misinformation that helped fuel this month’s attacks on
the country’s government center.
Even in the better-moderated English-speaking world,
the tone of Twitter has become rougher, say those tasked with monitoring the
site. Australia’s eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, who worked at
Twitter from 2014 to 2016, told The Washington Post that the platform had
already been like a “sewer” in her country before Musk let some of the worst
users back on.
“You can’t expect them not to behave like sewer rats,
and you probably should expect that further pestilence is going to expand to
the user base,” said Inman Grant, who has written the company twice and
reminded it that she can order abusive material to be taken down. “It’s becoming
a cesspool.”
Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said he
has been taken aback by vitriolic attacks on a campaign to persuade more
indigenous people to register to vote ahead of a referendum expected next year
on whether the legislature should have an advisory council of native people.
“We’re watching it very closely. This has been a dry run for what we might see
when that referendum occurs,” he said.
Tweets from Sydney-area accounts using two of the most
common gay slurs doubled in volume over the last three weeks of November,
according to Timothy Graham, a digital media expert at the Queensland
University of Technology.
“It is reasonable to argue that Elon Musk’s
disintegration of the Twitter safety team and major cuts to moderation is
influencing these trends,” Graham said. “At the least, it strongly suggests
that Elon’s claims about hate speech reduction are overblown. If anything, the
trend is increasing.”
Entire teams monitoring Asian countries, including
Japan, are now gone or nearly so, including those responsible for local
curation, trust and safety, and legal issues.
Twitter employees in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia
worked on misinformation beyond the immediate region, monitoring content on
everything including the war in Ukraine, protests in Iran and major elections
in markets where Twitter has less presence. The teams were expanding efforts to
identify and remove Russian misinformation around the Ukraine war when their
computers were turned off Nov. 4.
“The people who were in the U.S., because of their
location, were primarily dealing with the U.S. Outside, we were taking on
everything else. There was already that neglect underlying in the company, and
now it has been exacerbated,” a former employee who worked on misinformation in
the Asia-Pacific region said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss
internal matters.
India was a particular focus for Twitter moderation
before the layoffs because it was a priority market and because political
misinformation there was rife, along with legitimate protest. Moderation for
that country has fallen precipitously with staff cuts.
In the past, employees could report any misinformation
or hate speech, while curation teams would de-emphasize hashtags that were
especially partisan or invited hatred of minority groups.
One former Twitter employee said a Nov. 18 post
written by provocateur Suresh Chavhanke would have “definitely” been taken down
previously for violating platform’s policy.
The media entrepreneur and militant Hindu nationalist
shared a wedding invitation for an interfaith couple that was to take place two
days later at an event hall in the Mumbai suburbs — just weeks after the murder
of a Hindu woman from the same neighborhood, allegedly by her Muslim boyfriend,
made national news.
“How is this still happening even after the
heart-rending crime?” Chavhanke demanded to know. He added the hashtag
#lovejihad_ActOfTerrorism — a reference to a popular but false claim in India
that Muslim men were broadly waging religious war by seducing Hindu women.
The post from Chavhanke racked up more than 5,700
retweets and 10,000 likes, with some of his followers urging local residents to
stop the wedding. Activists tried to report his post by tagging and emailing
Twitter employees, to no avail. The couple’s relatives were inundated with
phone calls, the event hall proprietor told the media outlet Newslaundry. By
evening, the families had called off the wedding.
Chavhanke has gone further since then, posting on
Twitter a new email address and phone number for tipsters across India to
report interfaith relationships.
Alt News and SM Hoax Slayer, two Indian fact-checking
and social media advocacy groups, said they tried to alert Twitter through
emails about Chavhanke’s post trolling the interfaith wedding. Nothing
happened.
“There has to be somebody there to make a
determination about takedowns. I’m not sure if they have the bandwidth,” said
Pratik Sinha, the co-founder of Alt News.
Current and former employees in India said they
worried about both moderation team cuts and the departure of lesser-known teams
that improved the platform, including by debunking disinformation.
During a fraught 2021 election in India’s biggest state,
Uttar Pradesh, one employee said Twitter’s content curation team promoted
Indian fact-checkers who debunked fake posts alleging ballot box tampering.
That team hasn’t posted anything related to India
recently, though forged photos again became an issue in the closely watched
Gujarat state elections.
In Japan, Twitter’s largest market outside the United
States, staff cuts and other changes have produced a different feel to the
service without inflaming passions.
In the past, a small team curated topics of interest
and promoted them, which made Twitter an important resource for people to
discuss serious issues anonymously. That produced more varied takes on
political and cultural issues than did the relatively uniform news media.
But with the news curation team gone, trending topics
that are surfaced automatically are less about political events and more about
entertainment topics, a review of posts found.
Users said topics that disappeared from their
timelines in recent weeks included the divisive issue of the U.S. military’s
presence in Okinawa and socially sensitive topics like infertility and
feminism.
Users reported that they no longer see tweets about
issues such as human rights or criticism of the administration of Shinzo Abe, a
polarizing political leader who was assassinated in July.

Iran and Syria Set to Renew Long-Term Economic
Agreement
January 14, 2023
DAMASCUS, SYRIA —
Syria and key ally Iran agreed Saturday to renew an
economic strategic arrangement between the two countries as Damascus prepares
to welcome Iran's president in the near future.
Since Syria's uprising turned into civil conflict in
2011, Tehran has sent thousands of Iran-backed fighters to help President
Bashar Assad stay in power amid fighting that killed hundreds of thousands of
civilians and displaced millions.
Iran has also been a critical economic lifeline for
Syria, delivering fuel and credit lines worth billions of dollars to help
Damascus offset crippling Western-led sanctions. Syria's economy across both
government and opposition-held areas has hit an all-time low over the past
decade, with spiraling inflation, a currency plunge, and rampant power cuts.

Film exhibitor Manoj Desai on #BoycottPathaan: Both
Hindus and Muslims will watch Shah Rukh Khan's film
By - ETimes.in
Jan 15, 2023
The trailer of Pathaan was released recently and it
received a tremendous response from fans all around the globe. However, the
film has had its share of controversies when its first song Besharam Rang was
released. Deepika Padukone's saffron bikini hurt the sentiments of religious
groups and there were calls for boycott of the film unless the saffron bikini
scene was edited out. The saffron brigade misinterpreted the lyrics, took
offense and asserted that such an ‘insult to the saffron colour will not be
tolerated’. SC lawyer Vineet Jindal filed a complaint with I&B Ministry
citing the song hurts religious sentiments of Hindus.
Veteran film exhibitor and owner of G7 multiplex in
Bandra, Manoj Desai has said in an interview that this #BoycottPathaan trend is
nothing but some kind of propaganda. He further affirmed to Bollywood Hungama
that an equal number of Hindus and Muslims will watch Shah Rukh Khan's film.
Meanwhile, the trailer of Pathaan was showcased in
Dubai on Saturday. SRK's fan clubs shared some videos and pictures from the
location in which the the actor was heard saying, "Party rakhoge to

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM)
president Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday targeted Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat after a video was widely shared on social media that
showed a man being beaten at a railway station in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, AIMIM
leader Shaukat Ali had also shared a video clip linked to incident where the
man, who is reportedly a trader, alleged that he was assaulted by a mob, and
was forced to take his clothes off and chant 'Jai Shri Ram'.
"He was forced to strip his clothes off and chant
JSR slogans. RSS's Mohan mentioned about "Hazaar Saal Ki Jung". Is
this another proof of the same war @Uppolice @rpfnr_ Should take strict action
on this," Owaisi wrote on Twitter in a post, roughly translated from
Hindi.
The man in the clip, who said he was a Muslim, spoke
about the incident in the video shared by the AIMIM leaders. He said he had
boarded a train from Delhi, which was headed towards Moradabad. “When the train
stopped at the Hapur station (in UP), few people started pushing and shoving
and it was crowded there. At the same time, someone shouted ‘he is a thief',
and people around me started beating. They also forced me to chant ‘Jai Shree
Ram’ but I denied,” he added. The video of the incident could not be

U.S. Supreme Court takes up religious freedom case
from PA
JANUARY 14, 2023
PHILADELPHIA (CBS/CNN) -- The Supreme Court agreed
Friday to take up the case of a former US Postal Service worker from
Pennsylvania who wants the justices to revisit a decades-old test for
determining whether employers can deny religious accommodation requests.
Conservatives have long sought to throw out the
standard set in 1977, arguing it sets too low a bar for employers to meet when
denying requests by religious adherents. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas
and Neil Gorsuch have recently said the court should revisit the 1977 decision.
In the 1977 case, Trans World Airlines, Inc. v.
Hardison, the court determined that employers could deny a reasonable
accommodation request made by an employee under Title VII of the Civil Rights
Act and based on their sincerely held religious beliefs if the accommodation
results in an "undue hardship" on the employer.

An accomplished Pakistani diplomat, this Arlington
resident embraced American democracy
BY RICHARD J. GONZALES
JANUARY 14, 2023
After Arlington Latinos and Asians requested the city
name streets for their leaders, city staff recommended in the 2018 Collins
Street and Pioneer Parkway Design Guidelines the installation of honorary
street sign toppers to recognize for Asian, Muslim, and Latino heroes. To
promote a section of Pioneer Parkway that boasted ethnically diverse
businesses, the city re-branded the parkway from Center Street to State Highway
360 as International Corridor. Aftab Siddiqui, a political activist, visited
Arlington mosques to discuss name suggestions. They deliberated on “Jerusalem,”
“Muhammad,” and “Syed Ahsani” at several community meetings. They choose the
latter and submitted signatures to confirm their agreement. Syed Ali Ahsani,
Ahsani’s son, said his father had a desire to see the world. After passing
civil service exams, his father joined the Pakistan Foreign Service in 1952.
His assignments took him to Cairo, Rome, Kabul, Beirut, and Calcutta. Rising in
diplomatic ranks, he served as ambassador to Brazil, Sudan, and Ghana. His
international affairs experiences motivated Ahsani to establish the Pakistan
Foreign Service Academy, serving as director 1981-1988. After retiring, he
moved to Arlington in 1988 to be closer to his children, who had studied and
moved to the United States. His daughter Rumina Ahsani was studying at the
University of Texas at Arlington at the time of his arrival. After living in
authoritarian countries, he cherished the rights and freedoms the United States
offered its citizens. He said, “I feel very excited. America is a great
democracy because of the Constitution. It has great laws. It has freedom of
press. It is good for the advancement of all people.” Get unlimited digital

mosque is declaration of war
14/January/2023
MUSCAT January 14 .2023 (Saba) - The Grand Mufti of
the Sultanate of Oman Sheikh Ahmad bin Hamad Al-Khalili, saw the far-right
enemy government's direction to occupy the Al-Aqsa mosque, the continued
aggression against him and the violation of his inviolability and the narrowing
on worshippers as a declaration of war and disregard for the feelings of the
Islamic Nation in east and west of the earth.
According to the Palestine Agency today, the Mufti
said in a statement on Saturday: "The Islamic nation must all stand
together in the face of this aggression, and to support with all force the
Palestinian resistance attached to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. "
He added: As I have said more than once is a religion
in the neck of the entire Islamic Ummah, it will not be exonerated until it is
fully performed undiminished, the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque is similar to the Holy
Mosque, and to it was the Messenger of Allah's Mohammed "peace be upon
him", and it was the first qiblah for Muslims.

Embracing Taliban Key To China’s Goals In Central
Asia, But Islamic State Won’t Let It Happen
Praveen Swami
15 January, 2023
Large garbage bags had been used to cover up the
magnificent tau tau — funeral effigies — standing over the swimming pool to
avoid offending the guests. “The statues made it very obvious who the guy and
who the gal are,” the president of the energy giant Unocal, Marty Miller,
gingerly explained. The shrouding had been mandated by a consultant hired to
make sure cultural miscommunication did not end up sabotaging the $4.5 billion
pipeline deal the oil tycoon hoped to seal over dinner that evening in 1997.
The dinner went well: A photograph records the beaming
madrasa-educated Taliban foreign minister Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil posing in
front of a lit-up Christmas tree at Miller’s mansion in Sugar Land, Texas.
Earlier this week, just days after China and the Taliban
announced a $540 million deal to prospect for oil in Afghanistan’s Amu Darya
basin, Islamic State terrorists attacked the foreign ministry in Kabul. The
murderous suicide bombing took place just as a delegation from Beijing was due
to meet foreign ministry officials to discuss the oil agreement.
The second major attack on Chinese targets in Kabul in
just weeks, this incident has served as a notice that the superpower’s
ambitions for energy pipelines cutting across Central and South Asia might
prove to be pipe dreams.
