Kashmir’s Syncretic Culture: Pandits Welcome Muslim Brethren Back From Haj Pilgrimage

Outlook Web Desk
16 JUL 2022
In a heart-warming gesture, a group of Kashmiri
Pandits on Saturday welcomed the first batch of Haj pilgrims returning from
Saudi Arabia and recited praises for Prophet Mohammed at the airport here.
The group of Kashmiri Pandits stood outside the
terminal building of the Srinagar international airport and welcomed the first
batch of 145 Hajis who reached here in the morning on the first return flight
from the annual pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia to the Valley.
“Our Kashmiri Pandits welcoming Hajis at Srinagar
airport today by singing traditional Naat seeking the blessings of Prophet.
This is our syncretic culture believers of Islam are enablers of Amarnath Yatra
& the followers of Shavism are messengers for unity,” Bhan wrote on
Twitter.
In the past as well, Kashmiri Pandit singers like
Vijay Malla have sung some of the most popular Muslim eulogies and Muslim
singers have done similar with devotional songs to Hindus.
Over 6,000 pilgrims from J-K have gone on the annual
pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia this year. The Haj resumed this year after a gap of
two years due to Covid-19.
The last return flight carrying pilgrims from J-K will
arrive here on August 2, according to officials.

A Hindu man’s home and a temple in Narail’s Lohagara
in Bangladesh were allegedly set on fire on Friday over a Facebook post
allegedly belittling Islam in the latest spate of violence targeting the
religious minorities in the country. The attackers also hurled stones.
Police fired warning shots to disperse the mob that
vandalised several homes and torched one of them in Digholia village on Friday
evening, said Haran Chandra Paul, an inspector at the local police station.
Haran said a youth posted something to Facebook,
triggering anger among Muslims, who later carried out the attack. Police took
the youth Akash Saha, and his father Ashok Saha, in custody.

Malaysians Throng Japanese Bon Odori Dance Festival,

17 Jul, 2022
Thousands of Malaysians thronged a festival of Japan’s
traditional summer Bon Odori dance on Saturday evening, defying conservative
Islamists’ call for Muslims to stay away.
After a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus
pandemic, many locals, including hijab-wearing Muslim women, turned up in
kimono and “yukata,” or casual summer kimono, at a stadium in Shah Alam, the
capital of Selangor state, which surrounds Kuala Lumpur.
The Bon Odori dance festival has been held annually in
the Muslim-majority country since 1977 without any issue, with the Japanese
embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur being involved as
organisers.
But it was suddenly thrust into the spotlight last
month when Islamic affairs minister Idris Ahmad advised Muslims to avoid the
festival due to its “religious elements.” Other Islamic authorities weighed in,
saying the festival has links to ancestor-worship that could lead to
polytheism.
The sultan, who had attended the event in 2016, said
in a statement last month that the event was merely to promote Japanese culture
and there was no religious ceremony involved that could compromise the faith of
those observing.
He ordered authorities not to obstruct anyone from
attending and even asked minister Idris and other religious officials to
observe the event themselves.
At a press conference on Saturday, Japanese ambassador
to Malaysia Katsuhiko Takahashi said Tokyo highly appreciates Malaysia’s
cultural diversity and tolerance.
“This diversity and tolerance has been an engine to
promote bilateral relations in all aspects, including this Bon Odori festival,”
he said.
Dai Hoshiai, chairman of the organising committee,
said at the press conference that everyone, including Muslims, can join in the
dance.
“Personally, I feel this is a unique event,” said Umar
Hakimi, a 23-year-old interior designer who came with his kimono-clad hijab-wearing
female friend. “It unites a lot of people, not just Japanese but different
races and culture in one place.”
He dismissed the Islamists’ call for Muslims to avoid
the event, saying, “As a Muslim, you are thought to embrace other culture,
increase your knowledge. My advice to people who are sceptical is to come here
and see for yourself.”

Tool To Assess Jailed Terrorists Before Release
Criticised As Unreliable And Prejudicial To Muslims, Argue Australian Human
Rights and Islamic Council of Victoria
The Australian Human Rights
Commission and the Islamic Council of Victoria argue the assessment tool used
to determine the risk posed by released convicted terrorist is flawed.

16 Jul 2022
A tool used by authorities to assess the risk posed by
convicted terrorists before their release from prison is unreliable and should
be investigated, the Australian Human Rights Commission and a peak body for
Muslims have argued.
The Violent Extremism Risk Assessment 2 Revised, known
as VERA-2R, is used to measure the threat posed by extremists, often when
considering whether they will be subject to strict court orders once their
prison sentence is completed.
The federal government said 21 people in jail with
terrorism convictions were due for release before 2027. The tool has already
been used in about a dozen cases, the majority of them in NSW.
But according to separate recent submissions made to
the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM), the AHRC and
Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) have serious concerns the tool could be used
to justify an offender’s detention after they had served their sentence.
“Post-sentence orders based on anticipated harm can
only be justified where there is cogent and compelling evidence of future
risk,” the AHRC said in its submission.
“It is clear from experience in a number of cases that
the primary tool relied on by expert witnesses in PSO [post-sentence order]
matters, VERA-2R, is not sufficiently reliable for this purpose.
The Islamic Council said in its submission the factors
measured using VERA-2R meant Muslims were more likely to be considered at risk
of extremist violence than non-Muslims.
“Fundamentally, there is a lack of evidence to support
that the VERA-2R has predictive validity in its application to assess risks
posed by individuals suspected to have a propensity to commit acts of
terrorism, as well as future risks after an offender’s sentence is served.
“The tool was never designed to be used outside of
prisons and jails, and certainly not as a predictive tool of radicalisation to
violence in the community.

Iran Hard-Liners Burn US And Israeli Flags In Tehran,
Slam Biden Visit
July 17, 2022
Dozens of Iranian hard-liners rallied on Saturday at a
square in downtown Tehran, burning US and Israeli flags and denouncing
President Joe Biden's visit to the Middle East.
The demonstrators also protested against the
normalisation of ties between Israel and several Arab nations that started
under the previous US administration.
Biden said at a wider regional summit in Saudi Arabia
on Saturday that the US would not walk away from Middle East's security and
leave a vacuum that Russia, China or Iran could try and fill.
Separately, Iran announced on Saturday that it was
imposing sanctions on 61 Americans, including Mike Pompeo, the former secretary
of state, and John Bolton, the former national security advisor, over their
support for foreign-based dissident Iranian groups.
In June, an Iranian court also ordered the US
government to pay over USD 4 billion to the families of Iranian nuclear
scientists who have been killed in targeted attacks in recent years.

verification of their photo IDs, a row of 60-70 shanties in Sector 1 has

The cluster of shanties - across the Bengali Market -
was home to families of migrant labourers. Most of them worked as rag pickers
and domestic staffers in the housing societies in the vicinity. A pile of
clothes here, some utensils there and a pair of sports shoes spoke of a hurried

Heat wave in Europe: 'National emergency' in UK as

Claire Thornton

An ongoing heat wave is fueling wildfires, causing
heat-related deaths and breaking records in Western Europe.
British authorities are issuing dire warnings, as
temperatures may reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit in southern Britain, a region
usually known for moderate summer heat, with July highs in the 70s. It's the
first time such a forecast has been made in the area.
The heat poses a serious health risk, as people will
need to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. In Britain, few homes,
apartments, schools or small businesses have air conditioning, making residents
