ISIL Militant Threatens To Destroy the Kaaba in Mecca, Kill All Pilgrims 'Who Touch Stone'
Jul 10, 2014
A reported member of the militant group Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), which recently dubbed itself simply as The Islamic State, has declared that they will destroy the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which is Islam's most holy site.
APA quoted alleged ISIS member Abu Turab Al Mugaddasi based on reports from Turkish media, who said on Twitter:
If Allah wills, we will kill those who worship stones in Mecca and destroy the Kaaba. People go to Mecca to touch the stones, not for Allah.
ISIS reportedly is planning to take over the city of Arar in Saudi Arabia, which is very close to the Iraq border. It is a fifteen-hour drive away from Mecca, the site of the Hajj pilgrimage which all observant Muslims are expected to do at least once.
If indeed the statement is from an ISIS member, it's a shocking one even for them, considering that ISIS has been attempting to increase recruitment from Muslims worldwide by declaring the restoration of an Islamic Caliphate.
According to John L. Esposito, Professor of Religion and International Affairs and of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, "In terms of legitimacy- unless you're someone who's ready to join a terrorist group at this point, for the vast majority of Muslims there is no legitimacy with this group." This most recent threat reinforces Esposito's point, particularly as it comes during the holy month of Ramadan.

Syria air raids kill 20 Islamic State militants: monitor
Jul 10, 2014
Twenty members of the Islamic State (IS) were killed in Syrian air force raids morning against the militants' bastion in Raqa, a monitoring group said.
"At least 20 members of IS were killed and others were injured in air strikes... targeting an IS training base in Raqa," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The strikes also destroyed 14 of IS' military vehicles, the Observatory added.
IS militants are firmly in control of Raqa, their stronghold, and have secured large swathes of territory in eastern Syria and in neighbouring Iraq.
While some in the Syrian opposition initially welcomed IS -- formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) -- among their ranks, viewing it as a potential ally, its abuses and quest for control turned the rebels against them.
Rebels have been fighting IS since January.
The Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, for its part, has escalated its attacks against IS positions since the group spearheaded a Sunni militant offensive in neighbouring Iraq.
"From 10 June (when Mosul fell from Iraqi government control) to date, the Syrian air force really stepped up its raids against IS positions, and there have been strikes every day since then," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.
"There has been a marked escalation. The regime fears IS getting stronger, especially after it brought in vehicles from Iraq" that the militants seized from fleeing troops, he added.

Can’t win if you sin! Saudi-based cleric explains Brazil’s loss
Jul 10, 2014
There may be a religious reason as to why Brazil lost its World Cup semi-final game so dramatically to Germany, according to one Saudi-based cleric.
Following Brazil’s dismal 7-1 defeat on Tuesday, Sheikh Saad al-Duraihim tweeted in Arabic that the World Cup host had lost the match because they “presented the World Cup on bare stomachs and naked bodies.”
His post was ridiculed by many on Twitter, with one user sarcastically replying that Germany had won because they were “busy praying Taraweeh, (special night prayers during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan).”
During the game, fans across the globe expressed their disbelief through social media, mocking the Brazilians with hilarious tweets.
Germany scored five goals in 18 first-half minutes on the way to a 7-1 destruction of Brazil in the semi-final on Tuesday to leave the host nation in a state of stunned disbelief at the most amazing World Cup result of all time.
The European giant took full advantage of Brazil’s terrible defending with brilliant passing and movement to march into the final and hand the host nation their heaviest ever World Cup defeat.
An unmarked Thomas Mueller got the first from a corner after 11 minutes before Miroslav Klose struck to become the World Cup's all-time leading scorer with 16 goals.
Brazil's defense, badly missing the suspended Thiago Silva, fell apart as Toni Kroos grabbed two in three minutes before the superb Sami Khedira added a fifth in the 29th minute to leave the crowd, and millions watching on TV, in a state of total shock.
Brazil's few second-half attempts were foiled by in-form goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Germany substitute Andre Schuerrle banged in the sixth in the 69th minute and lashed in a seventh to inflict Brazil's first competitive home defeat in 64 matches and 39 years.
Oscar scored a consolation goal for Brazil in the last minute.
Brazilian newspapers, sports and television commentators were unanimous on Tuesday that the match’s result was the greatest shame in the country's illustrious footballing history.
"Historic Disgrace" read the massive headline on the website of the Folha de S.Paulo, Brazil's most influential newspaper.
"It is the biggest embarrassment in 84 years of the Cup. It was 10 minutes of compete blackout. You can't do that in the semi-final of the World Cup," said Galvao Bueno, Brazilian television commentator and presenter.
"The Germans played the way we liked to play so we need to sit back, see what is wrong with Brazilian football. Especially in the academies, the way we teach them to play. A lot of change will need to come," said Juninho, former Brazil midfielder.

Iraq's Kurds say 'hysterical' Maliki must quit
Jul 10, 2014
A spokesman for Iraqi Kurdish president Massud Barzani said Thursday national premier Nuri al-Maliki had "become hysterical" and should step down after he accused the autonomous region of harbouring jihadists.

Iraq PM Maliki accuses Kurds of hosting Sunni jihadists
July 10, 2014
Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki accused the northern autonomous Kurdish region of hosting jihadists spearheading an offencive that has overrun swathes of territory and sparked Iraq’s worst crisis in years.
“Honestly, we cannot be silent over this and we cannot be silent over Arbil being a headquarters for Daash, and Baath, and Al-Qaeda and terrorist operations,” Maliki said in his weekly televised address.
Daash is the former Arabic acronym for the Islamic State jihadist group, while Baath refers to the banned party of executed dictator Saddam Hussein.
“We cannot be silent over a movement that exploited the circumstances and expanded,” said Maliki, infuriated by a Kurdish announcement last week that plans were being sped up to hold a referendum on self-determination.

Saudi preacher denies supporting jihad in Syria
Jul 10, 2014
A popular Saudi preacher who previously called for jihad in Syria has recently appeared on television bluntly denying his famous statement, drawing scorn from fans and followers on social media.
During an interview with Rotana Khalijia, Sheikh Mohammad al-Arifi denied his famous statement to Al-Jazeera in which he called for jihad in Syria and supported al-Qaeda.
Sheikh Arifi threw a bombshell in February 2013 when he told the Qatar-based channel that al-Qaeda “does not tolerate bloodshed.”
He said some people attribute to al-Qaeda many opinions and thoughts which the group does not hold.
"These beliefs in fact are not correct. Al-Qaeda members do not tolerate accusing other Muslims of apostasy and they do not tolerate bloodshed. I am not part of al-Qaeda and I do not adopt their thinking, but Allah says: ‘And when you testify, be just,’” Arifi said.
During his recent TV interview, Sheikh Arifi also denied having predicted the coming of an Islamic caliphate.

A source from the UAE quoted by the Arabic daily, Al Khaleej, claimed that “the arrested Qatari men in the UAE were intelligence officials” whose arrest “confirmed that the neighboring Qatar is still detached from respecting the internal affairs of her neighbors thereby breaching the Riyadh agreement signed early this year.”
Al Khaleej quoted the source as saying that the available information on the spy agents contradicted with what the Qatari paper, Al Arab, had said that they were on a tourism trip.
Al Khaleej further quoted the UAE sources as dismissing Al Arab's claim because “hundreds of Gulf citizens enter the UAE or move out daily without any encumbrance.”

Egypt opens border to wounded Palestinians: official
Jul 10, 2014
Egypt opened its Rafah border crossing to Gaza on Thursday to receive wounded Palestinians as Israel pounded the enclave with air strikes, an official at the border said.
Hospitals in north Sinai, which borders Gaza and Israel, have been placed on standby to receive the Palestinians, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.
The crossing is usually closed, with Egyptian officials citing the tense security situation in Sinai, where the army is battling an Islamist insurgency.
Rafah is Gaza's only border crossing that bypasses Israel, which has hammered the coastal strip in response to Palestinian rocket fire.
The air strikes have killed at least 70 people since the operation began on Tuesday, including 11 women and 18 children, according to medical reports.

Pakistan Taliban Offshoot Terror Group Joins Iraq's ISIS; Threat To India?

July 10, 2014
New Delhi: In what might spell trouble for India, a lesser-known Pakistani terror group named Tehreek-e-Khilafat has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (earlier ISIS – Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), becoming the first such group outside the Middle East to do so.
According to a report in The Telegraph, the nondescript terror outfit Tehreek-e-Khilafat, which has claimed some terrorist attacks in Karachi, pledged to raise the Islamic State’s flag in South Asia and Khurasan – a term militants use for an area covering parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The militant group which is said to be one of the dozens of groups that comprise the umbrella group the Pakistan Taliban stated, “We are praying from the almighty Allah to give us chance in our lives to see the expansion of Islamic State boundaries toward the SubContinent and Khurasan region in order to hoist the flag of Islamic State here.”

J&K Police stop lecture by author Mridu Rai in Srinagar
Written by Bashaarat Masood | Srinagar | July 10, 2014
The J-K Police Wednesday stopped an academic programme in Srinagar, “threatening to seal a hotel” if Professor Mridu Rai, who teaches at Trinity College Dublin, was allowed to deliver a lecture. Rai was scheduled to deliver a lecture on ‘Language of violence, languages of justice: the state and insurgent Kashmir’.
Hours before the scheduled lecture, the police invoked Section 144 that bans the assembly of four or more persons at a public place.
“This is appalling that my voice was silenced along with other speakers,” Rai said at a press conference after she was not allowed to deliver the lecture. “It’s ludicrous. An academic lecture does not fall under Section 144. It was a simple conversation with people here.”

Pakistani Terror Group Swears Allegiance to Islamic State
Jul 10, 2014
A Pakistani terror group has become the first in the region to break ranks and declare allegiance to the Islamic State that has seized power across Iraq and Syria.
It represents a breakthrough for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as he tries to win support for his caliphate, potentially extending his influence into South Asia and bolstering his challenge to al-Qaeda for leadership of the global jihadist movement.
Little is known about the Tehreek-e-Khilafat group other than that it has claimed responsibility for a string of attacks in Karachi.
This week it pledged to raise the Islamic State’s flag in South Asia and Khurasan – the historic name used by Islamist militants for an area covering Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Using the poetic language often favoured by jihadist groups, it said in a statement: “From today, Sheikh Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi shall consider Tehreek-e-Khilafat and Jihad mujahideen fighters of Pakistan as one of the arrows among his arrows which he has kept for his bow.
“We are praying from the almighty Allah to give us chance in our lives to see the expansion of Islamic State boundaries toward the SubContinent and Khurasan region in order to hoist the flag of Islamic State here.”

Singapore Concerned over Jihadis Returning from Syria
Jul 10, 2014
Singapore on Wednesday expressed concern at the risk of terrorist attacks posed by local and foreign jihadists returning to Southeast Asia after fighting in Syria.
Interior Minister Teo Chee Hean said returning fighters have the skills to carry out terror attacks or support others planning them.
"The presence of former foreign fighters in our region - whether they originate from Southeast Asia or elsewhere - is a security threat to us," Teo told parliament.
"This threat is magnified if these returnee fighters are Singaporeans."
Teo cited parallels to the threat posed by foreign fighters who returned to Southeast Asia after fighting in the Afghan war against the Soviets in the 1980s.
He said several members of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network arrested in Singapore in 2001 for planning attacks on US and other foreign targets in the city-state had trained in Afghanistan.

South Asian groups ask US to end surveillance on innocent Muslims
Press Trust of India | Washington | July 10, 2014
Expressing concern over reports that the NSA and FBI monitored emails of prominent Muslim- Americans, including an Indian-origin attorney, a coalition of South Asian groups has appealed to the US to end surveillance on “innocent” community members.
The National Coalition of South Asian Organisations (NCSO), in a statement, said that it was deeply troubled by the reports that the US security agencies have engaged in surveillance of Muslim-American civic and civil rights leaders, including Indian and Pakistani Americans, under procedures intended to targed terrorists and spies.
“As organisations that work directly with South Asian community members, we know all too well that in the post 9/11 environment, the targeting of Muslim-Americans has unfortunately become a commonplace occurrence,” NCSO said.

France Steps Up Efforts to Stop Syria-Bound Fighters
Jul 10, 2014
PARIS—The French government is stepping up its fight against nationals who travel to fight in Syria's civil war as fears grow in Europe and the U.S. that Western-born militants could commit terrorist attacks when they return home.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve on Wednesday proposed new obstacles, including blocking websites that aim to recruit jihadists, to stop French citizens from trying to reach the front lines of the Syrian conflict, where offshoots of al Qaeda and other Islamist militants have come to dominate the rebel side.
"Recent events show that laws must be adapted to take into account worrying developments," the government said.
Mr. Cazeneuve's proposed measures come just weeks after French authorities said they believed that a man detained on suspicion of having killed four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels in May was the first jihadist returning from Syria to carry out an attack in Europe.
The U.S. government has also expressed alarm over the numbers of Western-born Muslims flocking to Syria. On Tuesday, Attorney General Eric Holder urged U.S. allies to intensify efforts to stem what he called a "global crisis."

Government adverts shown before extremist online videos
By Laura Kuenssberg & Mike Deri Smith
Jul 10, 2014
A government organisation temporarily suspended online advertising after a BBC Newsnight investigation found ads being shown before extremist videos.
Adverts for the National Citizen Service (NCS), as well as businesses, charities and the BBC were found running next to extremist videos.
Companies' and taxpayers' money may have gone to Jihadi groups because of the way the sites like YouTube operate.
YouTube said it removed violent videos when they were flagged by users.
'Appalling'
Host sites, including Youtube, share income from advertisers with the individuals or groups that provide the content.
As a result, advertisers like the National Citizen Service - run by the Cabinet Office - are potentially unwittingly funding extremist.
The National Citizen Service is a Cabinet Office programme that provides a modern-day equivalent to national service, intended to teach young people valuable skills and to help local communities.

European countries trying jihad rehab
Jul 10, 2014
BERLIN – Chris Boudreau’s son Damian told her over dinner on a November evening in 2012 that he was going to Egypt to study Arabic, the language of Islam.
She never saw him again.
“He flew to Seattle, then Amsterdam, then into Istanbul,” said Boudreau. “There was a training camp just outside the city where radicals train prior to crossing the border into Syria.”
Fourteen months later, the 22-year-old Canadian convert to Islam was dead, apparently killed in fighting between rival groups of Islamic militants in the Syrian city of Aleppo. Boudreau was left to wonder what she could have done to stop her son from becoming a jihadi foot soldier.
For answers, she’s turning to Europe, where authorities are increasingly using outreach programs to prevent and even reverse radicalization. Initiatives include school counseling, emergency hotlines and even programs to help find jobs for returning jihadists.

Seized nuclear material in Iraq 'low grade': U.N. atomic agency
Jul 10, 2014
The U.N. atomic agency said on Thursday it believed nuclear material Iraq said had been seized by insurgents was "low grade" and did not pose a significant security risk.
Iraq told the United Nations in a July 8 letter that the nuclear materials had been taken from a university in the country's north. It appealed for help to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad".
Al Qaeda offshoot, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, took over swathes of Syria and Iraq before renaming itself the Islamic State on June 29 and declaring its leader caliph - a title held by successors of the Prophet Mohammad.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) "is aware of the notification from Iraq and is in contact to seek further details", IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said.

Israel air strikes kill at least 20 on third day of Gaza campaign
Jul 10, 2014
Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip killed 20 people on July 10 including four women and four children, medics said, on the third day of a widening military operation.
The deaths bring to 70 the number of Palestinians killed since Israel on Tuesday launched Operation Protective Edge to halt rocket fire from the besieged territory.
Israel's army said it carried out raids during the night against more than 300 Hamas targets, claiming to have hit the Islamist group a total of 750 times since the operation began.
Emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP that an early morning strike hit a coffee shop in the city of Khan Yunis, killing eight people and wounding at least 15.
A second attack blasted a home in Nusseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing one person and wounding several others, Qudra said. Further strikes targeted two houses in Khan Yunis, killing four women and four children, he said.

Turkey steps up to stop jihadist flow to Syria, Iraq
Jul 10, 2014
Turkey has been stepping up measures to prevent the flow of jihadists into crisis-torn neighbors Syria and Iraq, amid growing fears that they will return to their home countries and plan attacks in future.
Authorities have begun to talk with families whose children have been recruited by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Terror and intelligence officials have reached up to 370 families and are constructing a profile of the people who have gone to Syria to fight alongside forces fighting President Bashar al-Assad.
In light of the information obtained from the families, some associations who were alleged to have helped people to cross into Syria are being investigated, including three Istanbul-based organizations that are sending humanitarian aid into the war-torn country.

Abbas says Israel committing 'genocide' in Gaza
Jul 10, 2014
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Wednesday accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza during its military campaign which has so far killed 43 Palestinians.
"It's genocide -- the killing of entire families is genocide by Israel against our Palestinian people," he told a crisis meeting of the Palestinian leadership in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
"What's happening now is a war against the Palestinian people as a whole and not against the (militant) factions.
"We know that Israel is not defending itself, it is defending settlements, its main project," said Abbas.
"We are moving in several ways to stop the Israeli aggression and spilling of Palestinian blood, including talking to Egyptian President (Abdel Fattah) al-Sisi and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon."

Israel on the defensive after fierce criticisms
Jul 10, 2014
Israel showed great restraint during its three weeks of continuous rocket fire from Gaza and its measured response was intended to restore the calm without major military action, a written statement by the Israeli Embassy said on July 10.
However, in response to the “incessant attacks” by Hamas on the civilian population of Israel, the government of Israel decided on July 7 to initiate “Operation Protective Edge,” said the embassy.
“Hamas and the other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip fire on communities inside Israel with the intention of killing civilians. They also do not hesitate to launch rockets from the midst of Palestinian civilian concentrations, thereby cynically using Gaza residents as human shields for their terrorist activities,” read the statement.

Turkish PM Erdoğan calls on ISIL militants to release hostages
Jul 10, 2014
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called on militants belonging to the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq to release the 49 Turkish hostages who were abducted last month in Iraq.
“In this sacred Ramadan month, there is an organization called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. If they really believe [in Islam], then we expect them to return our brothers,” Erdoğan said late on July 9 in the Central Anatolian province of Tokat.
IS, which previously referred to itself as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), kidnapped Turkey’s consul-general and 48 personnel of the consulate on June 11 after it seized control of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Thirty-two Turkish drivers, who were taken hostage by members of a local tribe working with ISIL, were freed last month.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu recently said the government was continuing to work for the release of kidnapped citizens and asked the public not to speculate about the incident.

Turkish company halts power supply to ISIL-controlled Mosul
Jul 10, 2014
Karadeniz Holding, a Turkish energy company that supplies power to the Iraqi city of Mosul, seized by Islamist jihadist militants, announced it suspended electricity exports to Iraq two weeks ago as their contract ended.
Additionally, the government has said it has no plans to prevent the company from supplying power to the region.
The second largest city of Iraq has been hit by several power outages since militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized the province.
Karadeniz Holding, the parent company of the Kartet energy company that was supplying around 200 megawatts (MW) of electricity a year, said it had been pumping power to Mosul and neighboring towns until two weeks ago.

NY court orders Iran hand $1.75bn to U.S. victims
10 July 2014
A U.S. appeals court in New York on Wednesday ordered $1.75 billion in Iranian funds to be handed to families of Americans killed in the 1983 attack on a barracks in Beirut.
The decision from three judges upheld a ruling from U.S. federal judge Katherine Forrest in 2013 that the money, currently held in New York by Citibank, be handed over to the plaintiffs.
The money would be a partial payment of the $2.65 billion award a U.S. judge ordered Iran to pay to the families in 2007.
The 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut killed 241 American personnel and was deemed by the United States to have been carried out by Lebanon’s Iranian-backed Hezbollah group.

Malaysia: ‘Civil court can hear matters relating to Islam’

Kassim @ Osman Ahmad, 80, is contending that the civil court has the jurisdiction to hear his application for a judicial review over his prosecution for allegedly insulting Islam.
