ISIL Destroys 2 Religious Landmarks of First Abbasid Era in Salaheddine

October 25, 2014

The "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) has blown up two religious and historical landmarks dating back to the first Abbasid era in a series of attacks targeting various archaeological sites in Salaheddine, the province's Scholars and Preachers Council said Friday (October 24th).

"Ignorant and criminal ISIL elements have blown up the Shoaib Dome and the home of leading cleric Yahya al-Iraqi in al-Dor, east of Tikrit," council chief Sheikh Nizar Abdul Khaleq al-Tikriti told Al-Shorfa

Both sites "date back to the first Abbasid era and contain important religious and archaeological treasures", he said.

ISIL has razed the two sites to the ground using improvised explosive devices, al-Tikriti added.

Kurdish TV Parodies Islamic State as Sex-Crazed Morons

October 25, 2014

A video released by KurdSat TV in Iraq portrays Islamic State fighters as sex-crazed idiots obsessed with blood, killing, and milking male goats.

The parody video, translated and published by the Middle East Media Research Institute on Sunday, is another production in a series of indigenous Middle Eastern anti-IS propaganda films. Both Palestinians and Iraqis have joined in on the IS-bashing.

A group of Kurdish actors dressed in comically fake beards and military garb sang and played instruments against a backdrop of the IS flag, all while merrily strumming their machine guns and intermittently fighting with swords.

“We are bearded, dirty, and filthy; we are brainless with nothing in our heads,” the mock jihadists sing. “We kill the dove in the sky and bring history to the present.”

The refrain of the song effectively sums up the stupidity of IS militants:

We are ISIS, we are ISIS

We milk the goat even if it is male.

The remaining verses harp on the jihadists’ terrible music, awful odor, and obsession with sex and violence.

“We strive for Jihad and sex, we are comfortable and happy to see blood,” the mock jihadists sing. “Our pockets are full of Qatari money, our language is bullets and cutting.”

Deviant Ideology Has No Place in Islam: Al-Sudais

Oct 25, 2014

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques, said Salafism reflected the true Islamic way of life suited to any time or place.

“It is the way of life of the adherents of Sunnah who followed in the footsteps of the Messenger (peace be upon him) and also the way of the early believers, the Muhajirs and the Ansars," Al-Sudais said while delivering the Friday sermon at the Grand Mosque.

"It is also following the will of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said: ‘Hold fast to my Sunnah and the way of life of the rightly guided caliphs after me. Beware of the innovations in religious matters; each new innovation in religious matters is a deviation from the right path and every deviation ends up in Hell Fire,'" he said quoting Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiah.

However, Al-Sudais clarified that opposition to new innovations was confined to religious matters and did not apply to modern scientific inventions and technological advancement. He said that some people do evil deeds and wrongfully attribute them to the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Salafi principles and method could not be held responsible for the erroneous understanding and practice of some people, he said.

Al-Sudais said the Kingdom has been holding fast to the Salafi creed and the teachings of Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab who called on people to follow the path of Tawhid and faith. His teachings sought to reform people from the aberrations in the creed and he fought against deviant views and wrong practices.

“His call was not for a new religion or a fifth school of thought but for the true understanding of the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), his truthful companions and followers of the succeeding generations to strictly follow the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet. His teachings were poles apart from the Takfiri ideology and the Khawarij practices, even though they attracted baseless accusations, false charges and attempts to tarnish him,” Al-Sudais said, adding the teachings of Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab were labelled by his enemies as Wahhabism. “The land of the Two Holy Mosques follows the moderate middle path of the Salafi way in the light of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah and the way of the righteous early followers of the Prophet.

At the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Imam and Khatib Sheikh Husain Al-Asheikh called on the believers to introspect and evaluate their own deeds to know how far they have succeeded in making the best use of their time leading lives as true Muslims on the occasion of the end of the current Hijri year.

Emergency rule in Egypt's Sinai after bomb kills 30 troops

Oct 25, 2014

CAIRO: A state of emergency came into force Saturday across much of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula after 30 soldiers were killed in a suicide car bombing by suspected jihadists.

It was the deadliest attack on the country's security forces since the army deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year, to the fury of his supporters.

The state of emergency, which took effect from 0300 GMT in the north and centre of the Sinai, will remain in place for three months, the president's office said.

A curfew is in force from 5 pm to 7 am.

Egypt also announced it would close the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip, the only route into the Palestinian territory not controlled by Israel.

“The army and the police will take all necessary measures to tackle the dangers of terrorism and its financing, to preserve the security of the region... and protect the lives of citizens,” the presidential decree said.

ISIS release video of “headless corpses” in the streets

October 25, 2014

IRAQ: For months its brutality has been documented in propaganda designed to frighten the world into considering its terrorist cause.

According to the media reports, ISIS release video footage of headless corpses in the streets of Raqqa in order t show their rule in the region. But footage of life under the rule of ISIS has revealed the lasting effects of the group’s barbarity, with women and children strolling past the decapitated bodies of Syrian soldiers in the city of Raqqa without giving them a second glance.

Scattered corpses lie on pavements and roads with some tied to fencing, their severed heads stuck between their legs, as black-clad ISIS fighters patrol the streets.

The video, filmed in July, offers a rare glimpse into civilian life since ISIS launched a campaign of terror against Syria and Iraq.

In other parts of the town preachers urge children, with black balaclavas disguising their innocent faces, to disobey their parents and join the militant group. Take a look at these heart-aching pictures:

The "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) has set up dozens of "media kiosks" in areas under its control in Syria and Iraq, in an effort to disseminate its extremist ideology, observers told Al-Shorfa.

Locals are constantly forced to read religious material circulated by the group's elements, retired schoolteacher and al-Raqa resident Mahmoud al-Amin told Al-Shorfa.

These flyers contain "distorted interpretations and fatwas" and often pertain to the affairs of the "Islamic state", or justify ISIL's killings, executions and hadd punishment, and its theft of zakat, al-Amin said.

Maldivian judge re-elected for second term on UN anti-torture subcommittee

By Minivan News | October 25th, 2014

Maldives Civil Court Judge Aisha Shujoon Mohamed has been re-elected to the UN subcommittee on the prevention of torture and other inhuman treatment or punishment.

Shujoon was first elected for the sub-committee in 2010 and won re-election by winning 63 of the 70 valid ballots cast at a vote held in Geneva.

Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon congratulated Judge Shujune, saying that the re-election “is a true testament to Judge Shujune’s performance in the sub-committee, her integrity and conviction.”

Shujoon is one of the founding members of the Maldives Detainee Network – now the Maldives Democracy Network – as well as being outspoken on issues of bribery within the judiciary.

The 20 member UN subcommittee works with governments to prevent torture and makes unannounced visits to prisons and detention centres to ensure detainees are not being mistreated.

Late last year, the Maldives passed its first anti-torture legislation. The Anti-Torture Act declares freedom from torture as a fundamental right, penalises torture, ensures respect for human rights of criminal suspects, and prohibits torture in state custody.

At least 100,000 Rohingya continue to flee Myanmar

 25 October 2014

A growing sense of desperation is fueling a mass exodus of Rohingya Muslims from western Myanmar, with the number fleeing by boat since communal violence broke out two years ago now topping 100,000, a leading expert said Saturday.

Chris Lewa, director of the nonprofit advocacy group Arakan Project, said there has been a huge surge since Oct. 15, with an average of 900 people per day piling into cargo ships parked off Rakhine state.

That’s nearly 10,000 in less than two weeks, one of the biggest upticks yet.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation of 50 million that only recently emerged from half a century of military rule, has an estimated 1.3 million Rohingya. Though many of their families arrived from neighboring Bangladesh generations ago, almost all have been denied citizenship. In the last two years, attacks by Buddhist mobs have left hundreds dead and 140,000 trapped in camps, where they live without access to adequate health care, education or jobs.

Iran, Russia create joint operations headquarters to fight IS

October 25, 2014

Iran and Russia created a joint operations headquarters to fight the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in Iraq, the Iranian Tasnimnews agency reported citing an Iraqi source.

Reportedly, the Iranian and Russian military experts are helping the Iraqi commanders in the fight against the IS.

“Over 60 military experts from Russia and Iran created a joint operations headquarters in the Al Rasheed Hotel in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad,” the report said.

The terrorist organization known as the ‘Islamic State’ (IS, formerly ISIL or ISIS) was created in 2003 in Iraq. Between 2004 and 2006, the organization was led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and consisted of 11 radical Islamist groups, which had close ties to the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.

Following the start of military confrontation in Syria in 2013 between the armed opposition and the government forces, the IS penetrated the country. The organization said at the time it refuses to take the oath of Al-Qaeda and declared ‘a holy war’ against all groups in Iraq and Syria, as well as the Syrian government forces.

Latest Britons Reported Dead In Syria Are an Aid Worker and a Violent Jihadi

October 25, 2014

An Indian takeaway driver from east London was last night named as one of the latest Britons to die in Syria.

Kamran ul-Haq died last month when he was crushed by rubble in an American air strike, it was reported.

In an interview with The Guardian, the 29-year-old’s elder brother said ul-Haq had become ‘trapped’ in Syria after losing his passport and fearing arrest if he returned.

The paper also reported text messages sent by ul-Haq before he was killed.

One read: ‘I might be going on a mad mission very soon. There’s a place that has been heavily attacked and bombarded.’

The Whitechapel takeaway driver had flown out to Syria in December and become an amublance driver to help carry casualties to field hospitals.

Number of Islamic extremists growing in Germany

25 October 2014

The head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency says the number of Islamic extremists in the country is growing rapidly.

Hans-Georg Maassen says his agency estimates that some 6,300 people in Germany are adherents of a fundamentalist strain of Islam known as Salafism.

Maassen told rbb-Inforadio in an interview broadcast Saturday that the number of Salafists could rise to 7,000 by the end of the year, compared to about 3,800 three years ago.

He says extremist strands of Islam provide disaffected young people with a sense of belonging and purpose that allows them to hope they'll go "from being underdogs to top dogs."

Authorities estimate that some 450 Salafists have traveled from Germany to join extremists groups fighting in Syria and Iraq.

Number of Disillusioned North Caucasian Militants Returning From Syria Increases

October 25, 2014

International observers have paid much attention to the fact that many foreigners are fighting against the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad. Tunisia holds first place among the countries of Asia and Africa, supplying volunteer fighters to the Syrian opposition forces (i100.independent.co.uk, September 11). Of the countries in Europe, Russia appears to be the primary source of volunteers to Syria as more than 800 fighters have gone to fight in the Syrian civil war (twitter.com, September 12). Chechens arguably comprise the majority among the combatants arriving in Syria from Russia. According to the author’s estimates, approximately 70 fighters are from Georgia (ethnic Kist from the Pankisi Gorge), 100–200 fighters are from Chechnya, and another 100–200 Chechens from Western Europe are fighting there as well, not to mention Chechens from Turkey and several Arab countries. The total number of Chechens from all countries combined could be as much as 1,500.

Many observers regard the participation of Chechens in the Syrian conflict as an attempt to damage Russian interests, although it is unclear why Chechens need to travel so far in order to do so.

India’s warning on pro-Pak group’s rally on Kashmir in London

Oct 25, 2014

Two days ahead of a planned rally in London by a pro-Pakistan group on Kashmir issue, India on Friday warned that forces inimical to Indo-UK relations may utilise such opportunity in open societies.

However, it appreciated Britain’s stand that the Kashmir issue was to be resolved only by India and Pakistan and said that with this reassurance the government was “quite comfortable” of any march being organised.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin downplayed the ‘Million March’, being organised on Sunday, saying India was a country of more than a billion and millions don’t “overawe” it.

“Now it is possible that forces inimical to India-UK relations may utilise opportuinities of this sort and it was in this context that we discussued with UK and we were reassured repeatedly that the UK’s view is very clear and that it is for India and Pakistan to resolve any issue that they have by themselves.

ISIS, Al-Qaida at Loggerheads at Hyderabad?

HYDERABAD: An internal war between followers of ISIS and al-Qaida to project themselves as the true leaders of the Islamic jihadist movement surfaced here on Friday with Hyderabad-based alleged former SIMI activist Moutasim Billah urging two suspected terror recruits from Maharashtra, who were arrested earlier this week, not to align with the Islamic group which has taken control of parts of Syria and Iraq and instead go with al-Qaida.

This was claimed by the Hyderabad police in its remand report submitted to the Tenth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Secunderabad, at the time of producing alleged SIMI activist Shah Mudassir and Shoaib Ahmed Khan, both natives of Maharashtra. According to the police, the duo had planned to go to Afghanistan for militant training and had come to Hyderabad to meet Billah who was to have arranged their visas for Afghanistan as well as provide them financial support. They were arrested by the city police at Secunderabad railway station no sooner did they land in the city on Wednesday.

‘Indian already under scanner motivated SIMI men for jihad in Afghanistan’

Oct 25, 2014

Two SIMI men from Maharashtra who were arrested in Hyderabad this week while they were preparing to travel to Afghanistan to join al-Qaeda were motivated to take up jihad on the Internet by an Indian national whose name has already been associated with two other recent attempts to recruit youths from India for global jihad.

One of the Internet recruiters who went by the name Zahid al Hindi, who pushed SIMI-linked Maharashtra men Shah Mudassir alias Talha, 25, and Shoeb Ahmad Khan, alias Pusad Shoeb, 24, has been identified as Sultan Abdul Khader Armar, 39, a native of Bhatkal in Karnataka, currently suspected to be based on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Authorities in Hyderabad are set to book Sultan Armar in a terrorism recruitment case for the first time in India. Sources said a large amount of electronic evidence in the form of chats and Facebook posts were available from the latest case to book Sultan Armar.

Ottawa gunman complained mosque he attended was too liberal, inclusive

October 25, 2014

VANCOUVER: The gunman who shot and killed a soldier in plain daylight then stormed Canada's Parliament once complained that a Vancouver mosque he attended was too liberal and inclusive, and was kicked out after he repeatedly spent the night there even though officials told him to stop, Muslim leaders said.

Aasim Rashid, spokesman for the British Columbia Muslim Association, said Friday that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau visited the Masjid Al-Salaam mosque for three to four months toward the end of 2011, and possibly early 2012, before he was told not to come back.

Rashid said that before Zehaf-Bibeau got in trouble for using the mosque for accommodations, he had complained to leaders in the previous administration about the mosque's openness and willingness to let non-Muslims visit.

Canada vows tougher laws as citizens worry in face of attacks

Oct 25, 2014

Canada vowed on Friday to toughen laws against terrorism as an opinion poll showed a majority of Canadians lacked confidence in their security services' ability to deter homegrown radicals who struck twice in the past week.

Investigators said there was no apparent link between the two attackers, who killed a soldier each in Quebec and the capital Ottawa, but Canadians worried about the parallels.

Police said both assailants had been through a radicalization, a term the government uses to refer to Canadians who become supporters of militant Islamic groups. Both attackers were shot dead.

Justice Minister Peter MacKay said the government would act swiftly and go beyond the terms of a bill already planned that would strengthen the powers of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service spy agency.

White House gives Israel defense minister the cold shoulder

25 October 2014

As his visit to the United States drew to an end, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon was denied an audience with high-profile White House officials reportedly as a result of critical remarks he made six months ago, Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported.

Ya’alon was denied a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Advisor Susan Rice, senior U.S. officials confirmed to the Israeli daily.

“Given some of his comments in the recent past, it should come as no surprise that he was denied some meetings,” a senior U.S. official told the Haaretz.

The Israeli official did meet with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power. He only met with the latter after the White House was too late to instruct Power to not meet with Ya’lon, the Associated Press reported.

Secret Entrance At Imam Bargahs Or Shrine Is Crime

October 25, 2014

JHANG: Additional District and Sessions Judge Asmatullah Niazi has ruled that placing secret entrances in a shrine or Imambargah is a crime.

The judge ruled this in a case on October 10 and ordered the Kotwali station house officer (SHO) to take action against a man who had set up such an entrance from house into the shrine and Imambargah of Hazrat Gohr Shah.

Petitioner Syed Faisal Shah, also the caretaker of the shrine, stated he had filed an application with the Kotwali police for the registration of a first information report (FIR) but to no avail. He added the main procession of Ashura would be brought out from the Gohr Shah Imambargah which had been declared sensitive for security reasons.

The judge wrote in the verdict “it is height of absurdity that KotwaIi police station SHO in his report has verified the version of the petitioner but is reluctant to proceed against the accused”.

South Yemen separatists turn out to demand independence

Oct 25, 2014

Thousands of southern Yemenis turned out in Aden Friday to demand independence for their once sovereign region, as rebels from the north press to expand their control over more of the impoverished country.

Yemen continues to reel under the impact of the expansion by Shiite rebels, after they overran the capital last month and seized a major port unopposed, before clashing with Sunni tribes and Al-Qaeda south of Sanaa.

The demonstrators gathered in Aden’s Parade Square to mark a “Day of Anger” called by the Supreme Council of the Revolutionary Peaceful Movement for the Liberation and Independence of the South, a new coalition of two major separatist groups.

Waving flags of the former South Yemen, they chanted “we demand freedom and independence” and “independence or death.”

On October 14, tens of thousands protested in central Aden’s Al-Arood Square, setting up a tent camp and promising an indefinite sit-in to press for independence.

Clashes, drone strike 'kill dozens' in Yemen

Oct 25, 2014

Fighting between Shiite rebels and Sunni tribesmen allied to Al-Qaeda has left dozens dead in central Yemen, while a suspected US drone strike killed 10 jihadists, tribal sources said Saturday.

The rebels, known as Huthis, have been facing fierce resistance from Al-Qaeda fighters and tribesmen as they seek to expand their areas of control after seizing the capital Sanaa and the Red Sea port city of Hudeida.

Clashes broke out on Friday evening when Huthi fighters trying to wrest control of the mountains around the central town of Rada, in Baida province, met resistance from Sunni militias, tribal sources said.

"They were repelled each time with heavy losses," a tribal source told AFP by telephone. "The fighting killed dozens, particularly among Huthi ranks."

Another tribal source said Huthi rebels had been trying to bolster their presence in the province after failing to take full control of Rada.

Turkish PM reiterates: CHP, HDP collaborators of Assad’s cruelty

October 25, 2014

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has accused two opposition parties of remaining indifferent to the cruelty in neighboring Syria, in a speech peppered with personal anecdotes and passages from Islamic history.

Particularly aiming at main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu after the latter suggested that Davutoğlu had become a "puppet" prime minister because his constitutional authority is constantly being overridden by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Davutoğlu said Kılıçdaroğlu had not displayed the high caliber of leadership required for the main opposition leader of a country.

Delivering a speech at an expanded meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) provincial chairs on Oct. 24, the prime minister recalled “claims” suggesting that “Seats are vacant in Turkey.” Without giving a name, Davutoğlu appeared to be referring to the CHP leader, who earlier in the same day said the prime ministry seat was vacant and implied that Davutoğlu was not able to execute his authority.

President's Advisor Stresses Responsibility of Followers of Religions to Fight Violence

Oct 25, 2014

Iranian President's Special Adviser for Ethnic Minorities Ali Younesi in a meeting with Archbishop Aram I of the Holy See of Cilicia of the Armenian Apostolic Church underlined the responsibility of the followers of different faiths and religions to fight all types of violence across the world.

"If prejudice takes a religious color, it will become much dangerous to the world security and therefore, the followers of religions have a heavy responsibility for fighting different types of violence," Younesi said during the meeting in Tehran on Friday evening.

"While all divine religions invite men to peace and friendship, today we are witnessing attempts to strengthen the ethnical, racial and religious prejudice under the name of Islam, Judaism, Christianity and other religions and this prejudice harms humanity," he added.

Aram I, for his part, lauded the beautiful image of peaceful coexistence between the Christians and Muslims in Iran, and said, "Armenians enjoy a peaceful life beside other Iranians and the Persian-language-speaking people."

Halloween a ploy to make Muslims godless, says Isma

October 25, 2014

BANGI, Oct 25 — Halloween celebrations are organised by non-Muslims worldwide to shake the faith of Muslims and turn them godless, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) alleged today.

Its president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman said it was likely that atheists were behind the events, claiming further that Halloween celebrations were also intended to spread atheism.

“We notice that such events are held to test moral limits or religion, and they are usually done by groups which are not religion-based — they are usually organised by non-Muslims.

“What they are doing is promoting something that is anti-religion. Maybe it is done by atheists who want to shake one’s faith,” Zaik told a press conference here.

Isma ulama council chief Aznan Hasan also suggested that Halloween celebrations may be a concerted effort to weaken Muslim faith.

Islamic Fundamentalism Workshop Banned by Police After Threats by Islamic Fundamentalists

October 25, 2014

Jakarta. Yogyakarta Police banned a media literacy workshop about Islamic fundamentalism scheduled to be held on Friday morning after threats were circulated by an Islamic fundamentalist group.

“Police asked the committee to cancel the workshop three days ago,” the director of the Islamic and Social Study Institute (LKIS), Hairus Salim, told the Jakarta Globe on Friday. “We told them to issue a formal letter if they wanted to ban the event.

“They sent the letter yesterday [on Oct. 23].”

The letter was signed by the Yogyakarta Police’s security chief, Sigit Haryadi.

It is understood that police believed the Yogyakarta chapter of the Islamic People’s Forum (FUI Yogyakarta) planned to disrupt the event.

The workshop, titled “Media Literacy: Handling Religious Fundamentalist Content in the Media”, should had been part of an event called “Jagongan Media Rakyat” (People’s Discussion on the Media).
