Gov. Phil Murphy signed a proclamation Saturday designating January as Muslim Heritage Month in a measure that advocates say will promote appreciation and awareness about Muslim traditions and contributions.

“As a state that has the highest percentage of Muslims in the nation, we are so overjoyed to have a month that celebrates and recognizes our community in a positive light and hope that this recognition further pushes the engagement of the Muslim community in society," said Zainab Syed, an organizer with American Muslims for Democracy, one of the organizations that advocated for the measure.

Murphy signed the proclamation at Drumthwacket, the governor's official residence in Princeton, during a celebration for the Eid al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.

“I am proud to designate January of each year as Muslim Heritage Month as it will shine a light on the rich histories, cultures, and shared principles of Muslim Americans," Murphy said. "New Jersey takes great pride in its diversity and we will continue to recognize and celebrate the positive impact Muslims have made, and continue to make, to the advancement of this state.”

The governor's Eid gathering drew Muslim community leaders, clergy and elected officials from across the state. This year, they were jubilant over the news of Muslim Heritage Month.

Franklin Lakes, with the American Muslim Community of Franklin Lakes, hosted a Ramadan lighting ceremony in front of borough hall on Monday, March 27, 2023.

“For too long, we’ve seen damaging and irresponsible depictions of Muslims, said Selaedin Maksut, executive director of the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. "These narratives have tangible consequences, but now, we will be seeing the counter and, hopefully soon, prevailing narrative: One that highlights, celebrates, and acknowledges the American Muslim community in New Jersey."

Newly Released Photos Capture Drama At White House During Operation To Kill Osama Bin Laden

New pictures have been revealed illustrating the tense atmosphere in the White House during one of the most dramatic special operations of the century – the killing of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The pictures were released through a Freedom of Information Act request from The Washington Post to the Obama Presidential Library. Taken by White House photographers during the administration of President Barack Obama, the photographs exhibit the near-palpable tension among America’s top leaders as they watched remotely while US soldiers located and killed the al-Qaeda terrorist.

The raid took place nine years and almost eight months after hijacked airplanes struck New York City’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, killing nearly 3,000 people in a terrorist attack that nearly brought the world to a standstill. The Bush administration immediately named Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda, the Islamic terrorist organization he co-founded, as the prime suspects. A $25m reward was offered for information leading to bin Laden’s capture or death.

It took nearly a decade, however, before the US would hunt down the terrorist and exact justice – but operations had been ramping up for months before President Obama gave the final order just days before his killing.

According to senior administration officials at the time, the president had begun working with the CIA in September 2010 “on a set of assessments that led it to believe that in fact it was possible that Osama bin Laden may be located at a compound in Pakistan.” Intelligence became more aggressive and pinpointed, and President Obama, in the middle of March, began chairing a number of National Security Council meetings. On 29 April 2011, he gave the final order ro pursue the operation.

Days later, the White House cancelled all public tours on 1 May and, as official photographers documented events, Cabinet members and others began crowding into the Situation Room complex. At 1.22p., CIA Director Leon Panetta gave the order to begin the operation; by around 3.30pm, helicopters carrying US special forces were nearing the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where Bin Laden was believed to be.

By 4pm, “Obama’s national security team soon squeezed into the room with the president,” the Post reported on Saturday. “White House photographer Pete Souza also was in the room, taking pictures with his ‘butt up against a printer.’

“At 4:05 p.m., Souza took the now iconic photo of Obama and his advisers intensely watching the video feed of the raid. A document on the desk remains blurred in the version released by the Obama Library. The Library withheld 307 photos from the Post, describing their contents as ‘national security classified information.’”

The Obama Presidential Library withheld 307 photos from the FOIA response, describing their contents as ‘national security classified information’

Bin Laden’s body was buried at sea the same day. Hours after his killing, at 11.35pm, President Obama addressed the nation and the world from the East Room of the White House in a televised speech.

“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan,” he said. “A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”

He continued: “Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism professionals who’ve worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome. The American people do not see their work, nor know their names. But tonight, they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice.

“We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism, and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country. And they are part of a generation that has borne the heaviest share of the burden since that September day.”

The new images – which took more than a year to receive after filing the FOIA request, the Post reported – reveal an even more intimate glimpse of a deeply significant day of American history.

Mr Souza has spoken with similar gravity about the weight of the job of White House photographer, detailing in a 2020 interview the advice he hoped to give to the next person taking up the mantle.

“Remember what the number-one function of this job is: It’s to document for history,” he told Fast Company. “You’ve got to give access to what’s happening for the history books. You can make your own decision on whether you want to make any of those public during the administration, but, for history, we gotta make sure we have those images.”

AKP District Office Asks Imam To Convince Congregation To Participate In Erdogan’s Rally

Imam Yusuf Kılıç (ANKA)

-----

April 29 2023

A Turkish imam working in the western province of İzmir’s Buca district has stated that someone from the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) Buca district office called and asked him to convince the members of the congregation of his mosque to attend President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s rally.

Imam Yusuf Kılıç told ANKA News Agency that “Two days ago, I got a call from the AKP Buca district office. They said they had a rally. They wanted me to gather the congregation of the mosque to (participate in Erdoğan’s) rally. They also asked me to allocate a car.”

Kılıç said he refused the request of the AKP members. “(After saying no,) the friend on the phone said to me with a harsh tone that 'Brother, I only want one thing from you. Are you saying yes or no to us?' I thought this would not be appropriate as a moral responsibility and within my duty as a civil servant. I said, 'No.' They turned off the phone.”

Kılıç said as an imam he does “not belong to a party. I just have a duty in the mosque to convey religion to people. If I bring some of the members of the congregation to rallies, it would be against the principle and purpose of this mosque. This is a huge problem for me and for society. Do not touch my mosque, do not touch my congregation. I love my job and my mosque. Please don't touch me.”

The AKP government does not hesitate to use public resources in their favor during their election campaigns, including state media, ministries, governor’s offices, media watchdog RTÜK, creating a heavily unfair election process for the opposition parties.

China 'Waging War' on Islam in East Turkistan, 'Committing Genocide' Against Uyghur Muslims: Report by the Centre for Uyghur Studies

China 'Waging War' on Islam in East Turkistan, 'Committing Genocide' Against Uyghur Muslims: Report by the Centre for Uyghur Studies

------

By: Saurabh Verma

APRIL 29, 2023

China is “waging a war" on Islam in East Turkistan and “committing genocide" against Uyghur Muslims, said a report by the Centre for Uyghur Studies (CUS).

The report, titled “Islamophobia in China and Attitudes of Muslim Countries”, highlighted the state-sponsored Islamophobia by the Chinese regime with a particular focus on China’s Islamophobic policies in East Turkistan.

The report also examined China’s “disinformation” campaigns in the Islamic World and the attitudes of Muslim-majority countries on China’s “war" on Islam. It analyzed the “systemic and historic Islamophobic policies" of the Chinese Communist Party that seek to “sinicize” Islam and Muslims under its rule since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

“Today, the Chinese regime is waging a war on Islam in East Turkistan and committing genocide against Uyghur Muslims. However, the Islamic World is yet to recognize the real nature of the Chinese regime due to the mass disinformation campaign the Chinese regime is carrying out among Muslim countries,” said Abdulhakim Idris, Executive Director of Center for Uyghur Studies.

The report also documents the various aspects of China’s “war on Islam” in East Turkistan throughout the last seven decades, and most recently since 2017. It also examines China’s “disinformation” campaigns in the Islamic World and various propaganda practices the Chinese regime deploys to prevent Muslims from voicing getting alarmed by China’s religious persecution of Muslims.

The report ends with a chapter on the failure of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on the Uyghurs and the attitudes of Muslim-majority countries towards the Uyghur Genocide.

"Rectified Wrong Done By Congress": Home Minister Amit Shah On Karnataka Muslim Quota

Amit Shah made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Byndoor (File)

-----

April 30, 2023

Udupi, Karnataka: Lashing out at the Congress in poll-bound Karnataka on Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rectified wrong done by Congress by doing away with Muslim reservation quota in Karnataka.

Amit Shah said, "BJP has rectified the wrong done by Congress by doing away with the Muslim reservation quota in Karnataka. Congress wants to restore it. Ensure that it is not given this chance; it is unconstitutional as well as compromises the rights of Vokkaligas, Lingayats, SCs, STs and Dalits in the State."

"BJP scrapped the 4 per cent Muslim reservation. That reservation was not as per Constitution. Our Constitution does not permit reservation on the basis of religion. Congress says that once their reverse gear government comes, they will bring back the Muslim reservation once again. Do you want that?" questioned Amit Shah.

Alleging that Congress was incapable of the protection of coastal Karnataka, Amit Shah said, "Only BJP can do the job of securing Coastal Karnataka. Greed for a vote bank, Congress can never ensure the security of Coastal Karnataka. We worked to provide security to fishermen by building a new port in Udupi."

Earlier, Amit Shah said that Congress would put the state into "reverse gear", depriving it of the benefits of "double-engine sarkar".

Addressing a rally at the Navalgund Assembly constituency, Amit Shah said, "On one hand, there is the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and on the other, is the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. This (Karnataka Assembly) election is an opportunity for you to decide if you want a double engine sarkar led by PM Modi, which will take Karnataka forward, or the Congress's reverse gear sarkar, which will take Karnataka backwards."

The polls for the 224-seat assembly will take place on May 10 and the counting of votes will be held on May 13.

Man sought in Minneapolis mosque arson incidents in custody, police say

By Star Tribune staff

APRIL 30, 2023

A man sought in connection with two arsons at Minneapolis mosques has been arrested and is in custody, Police Chief Brian O'Hara said early Sunday.

"Based on our investigation, there is no other known, active threat to our Muslim neighbors," O'Hara said in a statement early Sunday, adding that the arrest came after work by the department, as well as the U.S. Attorney's Office, FBI, ATF and others.

Earlier in the week, authorities had charged 36-year-old Jackie Rahm Little of Minneapolis with second-degree arson in connection with a fire Monday at Masjid Al Rahma mosque in Minneapolis, at the Mercy Islamic Center, which contains the mosque in the 2600 block of S. Bloomington Avenue.

Muslims express confidence, concerns in the wake of Minneapolis mosque arsons

APRIL 29, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS — Days after a fire was set there, several hundred Muslims bowed in prayer Friday at the Masjid Omar Islamic Center, filling the mosque and lining the hallway outside. They united for Friday worship as they always have. They caught up with friends. They shared tea. "We're here for good," vowed Abukar Abdullahi, who owns a tax preparation business across from the south Minneapolis mosque. "I don't care what they do. We will go nowhere because we are part of this wonderful community." It was the first Friday prayer since Minneapolis police responded Sunday night to a fire set in a bathroom at the mosque. Worshipers extinguished the flames. The next day, authorities evacuated adults and children after fire broke out at another mosque nearby, Masjid Al Rahma. Authorities have charged 36-year-old Jackie Rahm Little of Minneapolis, who remains at large, accusing him of arson in that fire. Worshipers at both mosques reflected Friday on the events with a mix of fear and resolve. Suleyman Mahmud, 22, who regularly visits Masjid Al Rahma, said the fires have stunned the community. But having grown up Muslim in the United States, he said, he's used to Islamophobic behavior and that it's important not to let it hinder daily life. "It's something you're already aware of and is something you have to be conscious about," Mahmud said. "Other than that you just have to go on with your daily life because you're going to find bad anywhere there's good."

Ukraine’s battlefields could supply Iran with fresh Western tech to ape, expert says

By TOI STAFF

29 April 2023

Russia could supply Iran with Western technology it captures on the battlefields of Ukraine, which Tehran could then use to further its weapons development programs, an expert told US media on Friday, as the two countries tighten their military cooperation.

Tehran and Moscow have strengthened their ties following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Iran supplying attack drones that have dive-bombed infrastructure and other civilian targets across Ukraine. After initially denying that it had armed Russia, in November, Iran acknowledged the drones’ transfer, while claiming it took place before the war began — an assertion Western powers reject.

Taimur Khan, a Gulf analyst at the Conflict Armament Research group, told CNN that “given the fact that Russia is capturing sophisticated Western weapons on the battlefield – such as the Javelin anti-tank missile – and that there is increasing military cooperation between the two countries, and Iran has proven capabilities in this regard, I think it’s likely that they will collaborate on copying these types of systems.”

Israel, the US and many other Western countries have sounded the alarm about the deepening cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, as they both face greater global isolation and mounting economic sanctions.

Pakistan-based cartel kingpin behind smuggling of Afghanistan drugs

By Neeraj Chauhan

Apr 30, 2023

Haji Salim, a Karachi-based criminal kingpin who works with Pakistan’s spy agency and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit to facilitate the infiltration of terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, also runs the main syndicate that smuggles the majority of Afghan heroin and illicit drugs to India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and some Middle East countries, investigations by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other agencies have revealed.

Salim’s cartel operates many clandestine laboratories in Balochistan, where heroin from Afghanistan are labelled with different symbols or inscriptions, investigators said, declining to be named. Some of the packets seized by Indian agencies mid-sea had inscriptions like ‘555’, ‘999’, ‘Unicorn’ and ‘Dragon’.

“While it is estimated that 70% of total drug trafficking in India is taking place through the maritime route, Haji Salim’s network is behind the majority of consignments,” an official said. “He sends consignments in entire IOR (Indian Ocean region) and Indian ports.”

Indian agencies have till date seized in the Indian Ocean region around 3,000 kg of heroin, 500 kg of methamphetamine and 600 kg of hasish that were sent by Salim’s cartel.

Russia's Shoigu: Extremist Groups in Afghanistan Pose Threat

By Banafsha Binesh

29-04-2023

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defense Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi that the existence of some terrorist groups in Afghanistan are the main threat to neighboring countries, especially Central Asia.

Speaking at the meeting, Shoigu noted that the topic of Afghanistan must be kept on the agenda of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

“At the same time, numerous radical extremist groups entrenched in the territory of Afghanistan pose the main threat, promoting their ideas and efforts in neighboring republics. To our mind, the topic of Afghanistan must be kept on the agenda of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Only comprehensive international and regional assistance can facilitate measures to overcome challenges Afghanistan faces alone,” said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

“If a nation shelters terrorists, it not only poses a threat to others, but for itself too. Radicalization of youth is a cause of concern not only from the point of view of security, but it is also a major obstacle in the path of socio-economic progress of society. If we want to make the SCO a stronger & more credible international organization, our top-most priority should be to effectively deal with terrorism,” Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said.

Communal Parties Having Sleepless Nights As BSP Has Given Proper Representation To Muslims In UP Urban Body Polls

30 APR 2023

BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday said "casteist" and "communal" political parties are having sleepless nights ahead of the urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh due to her party giving a proper representation to the Muslim community in these elections. "Politics has heated up here due to the BSP giving a proper representation to the Muslim community in the elections for the mayors' posts in 17 municipal corporations. Casteist and communal parties are having sleepless nights due to this," the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said in a tweet in Hindi.

"The BSP is an Ambedkarwadi (Ambedkarite) party that follows the policy and principle of 'sarvajan hitay' and 'sarvajan sukhay' and has formed its government in Uttar Pradesh four times on that basis. It always gave proper representation to Muslims and other communities. Therefore, I appeal to people to pay more attention to their own interests and not to the conspiracies of our rivals," she added.

King Charles III Coronation Will Feature Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Too

By William Booth

April 29, 2023

LONDON — The upcoming coronation of Charles III, which will attract a global audience, will not be the “woke” mash-up some conservatives feared but will be unprecedented in its inclusivity.

The new king wants to present himself not only as the “Defender of the Faith,” meaning the Church of England, but all faiths, here and across the realm.

In a remarkable twist, at the urging of Charles, the coronation will acknowledge that Britain is no longer an exclusively Christian country, but is in fact a multifaith nation, including many who believe in no deity at all.

Herculean task ahead for PTI, govt negotiators

Mansoor Malik

April 30, 2023

LAHORE: Unless something dramatic happens, it seems Tuesday will be a tough day for the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and government negotiators, with the former seeking the dissolution of assemblies before May 14 and the latter appearing in no mood to entertain this demand.

The bonhomie on display throughout this week between the two sides was jolted by the late-night raids on former Punjab chief minister Parvez Elahi’s home.

But with both major parties refusing to budge from their respective stances, chances that the dialogue will yield positive results are starting to look “very slim”.

Speaking to party workers on Saturday, Imran Khan said his party would be ready to discuss the election date only after the dissolution of the NA before May 14 — the cut-off date for elections in Punjab.

Parvez Elahi booked in terror case after eluding overnight raids

Imran Gabol

April 30, 2023

LAHORE: Following a dramatic late-night raid on his residence, Punjab police on Saturday registered a case against former chief minister Parvez Elahi and others on terrorism charges for allegedly attacking officials of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) officials on Friday.

A police and ACE raiding team had conducted a raid at Mr Elahi’s Gulberg residence, late on Friday night and arrested 12 people. The raiding party used an armoured vehicle to break open the main gate of the residence after facing resistance. However, the ACE team could not find Mr Elahi, even after thoroughly searching the house.

Separately on Saturday, Rasikh Elahi petitioned the Lahore High Court (LHC) to restrain authorities from arresting Mr Elahi until the expiry of his protective bail on May 6.

In his plea, the son of the former CM contended that his father was granted protective bail till May 6 by the high court on April 28 in a corruption case registered by the ACE.

Incompetent people made ministers in current cabinet: Abbasi

Staff Reporter

April 30, 2023

LAHORE: Former prime minister and PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi says all the political parties in the current government have failed to give a better and competent cabinet.

“We could not form a 10-member competent people’s cabinet to run the affairs of the country smoothly,” he lamented and added that the people who did not have any ability were made ministers in the cabinet.

Abbasi said the institutions were not working within their constitutional limits and all the systems of the country had failed due to failure of the leadership. He bemoaned the lack of vision in the leadership to bring about changes to the system to solve problems of the country facing existential crisis.

The former prime minister was addressing a seminar on ‘Reimagining Pakistan’ at the Government College University (GCU) on Saturday. The seminar was a part of ‘The Great Debate 2023’ to discuss the problems of the country and their solutions.

Sudan's Islamists use AI, social media to aid in fighting

30-04-203

Though Sudan's Islamists have been bumped out of power in Africa’s third-largest country, it appears that they are attempting to crawl back into political relevance by using highly sophisticated AI and social media networks. The development comes after diplomats from other countries have left the area, per the Daily Mail.

Islamist groups are reportedly using images to suggest that the West is on the verge of retreating, meaning victory for the Islamist groups is close. Some of these online networks have also disseminated fake audio clips that purport the US is actively attempting to mitigate the influence of Islam on the country.

One example of technological manipulation that these groups have carried out is an AI-generated photo of US Ambassador John Godfrey, suggesting that the ambassador is strategizing about how to intervene in the country.
