“Boy From Heaven”: Filmmaker Tarik Saleh Takes Us Inside The Epicentre Of Power Of Sunni Islam

By Nick Vivarelli

May 20, 2022

Swedish/Egyptian director Tarik Saleh is in competition in Cannes with “Boy From Heaven” his second film to delve into the underbelly of modern Egypt — and the Arab world at large — following his 2017 political thriller “The Nile Hilton Incident,” which depicted political power abuse and police corruption. “Nile Hilton” won the grand jury prize at Sundance and was banned in Egypt.

In Saleh’s new potentially explosive pic, the young protagonist Adam, who is the son of a small-town Egyptian fisherman, is offered the privilege of studying at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, which is the epicenter of power of Sunni Islam. Shortly after his arrival in Cairo, the university’s highest-ranking religious leader, the Grand Imam, suddenly dies. This prompts Adam to become a pawn in a ruthless power struggle between Egypt’s religious and political elite.

Saleh spoke to Variety about how he navigated the thorny subject matter of his bold new political drama. Edited excerpts below.

What drew you to make a film that takes us inside the world’s main center for Islamic theology for the first time?

My grandfather went to Al-Azhar and I’ve always been fascinated by it. So after “Nile Hilton,” I was thinking about Al-Azhar, and about how little people know about Islam in a way that I think is interesting.

Well you do it in a way that is likely to be explosive

Of course, in the back of my head, when I was writing it, I was like: “Oh, can you really say this? Can you talk about this? Can you do this?” But I decided to put that question in a box and just say: “No, I’m going to go in.” So while I’m writing the script, it’s like I’m walking around with the camera, and following my characters with the camera, and I see what they’re up to, and sometimes they do what I want; sometimes not. It’s not up to me. And as the story unfolds, I was like: “Holy shit, I should probably not make this film.” Because it’s, like you say, it could ruffle feathers.

In a nutshell, why will it ruffle feathers?

I think that what’s more sensitive than the religious aspects of this film is how I deal with state security. Because the tension between state security and religious power [in Egypt] is enormous.

Is there any chance the film will play in Egypt?

I think they’ll have a few meetings before they decide. But listen, I don’t think it’s a controversial film. My whole family is Muslim. And I’m a half-Swedish, half-Egyptian. Here is the paradox. I love Egypt. It’s an unrequited love, of course. It doesn’t love me back. But I think that the point is that I don’t like how Islam is portrayed by people that know nothing about it. I don’t like it when people with bad intentions piss on Islam. I don’t think it’s respectful. I don’t think that’s how you treat other people. I don’t like it when Muslims treat minorities in Muslim countries badly. I think that sucks. I think that is not where I am coming from.

What did you do to make it theologically accurate?

I worked with imams, when it came to the script. I tried the script on imams and discussed the theological arguments in it to make sure, because it wasn’t my intention to provoke. I see myself as a filmmaker who just wants to tell stories truthfully, and I think that if the truth is going to be painful, which it will be for some people – but it’s more for political reasons than for religious reasons – then so be it.

UK Muslim MPs Sell Out Yet Again – This Time Over Conversion Therapy

By 5Pillars

22-05-2022

Educator Yusuf Patel asks what is the point of electing Muslim MPs who advance causes, such as a ban on gay conversion therapy, which will detrimentally impact our children.

On some issues where there’s little risk or there’s wider support from “white people,” they will seemingly be brave and show courage but on other issues that draw the ire of certain groups they will be noticeably silent.

The government has pledged to ban conversion therapy. Over 250 Muslim leaders signed an open letter expressing dismay about the consequences for Muslim young people because of these vague plans.

Yasmin Qureshi MP responded in an article on her website unequivocally backing the proposals. She said: “I believe that LGBT conversion therapies should have been banned a long time ago.”

Ironically, she tried to justify her stance by claiming there’s a “broad consensus” amongst faith leaders in the UK. To evidence her claims, she linked to a BBC article that included a quote from Sheikh Ramzy, an Islamic scholar in Oxford, who argued that Muslim scholars need to be allowed to help young Muslims struggling with sexual desires that go against their religious beliefs.

But she made no effort to at least comment on how this poorly-framed legislation should not interfere in the rights of faith communities to have consensual, supportive conversations with young Muslims.

The coup de grace comes at the end of the article. Yasmin makes clear: “I can assure you that my Opposition Colleagues and I will continue to support a ban on conversion therapy for all LGBT people and the removal of ‘consent’ loopholes.”

The consent loopholes, as she negatively puts it, are the ones that would allow an imam to have consensual, caring, faith-inspired conversations with young Muslims struggling with their health. This is the very thing that will save imams from choosing between breaking the law by providing support or turning a young person who is struggling to align their desires with their faith.

These comments are motivated by the “affirmative model,” which seeks to concretise a behaviour as an identity. So when a young Muslim goes to a counsellor to express dismay about their same-sex feelings, the approach should always be to affirm their “identity” and celebrate their inclusion into the LGBTQ+ community. There is no room for exploring these feelings, even if that is what the young Muslim wants.

He said: “I was deeply disappointed by the Government’s recent u-turn to not ban conversion therapy. Then, they u-turned once again to say a ban on conversion therapy would happen, however it would exclude transgender individuals. This is unacceptable and a ban on conversion therapy must apply to the entire LGBT+ community.”

I don’t think Mr Khan would be able to even define what conversion therapy is, or explain how common the various manifestations are of how these proposals will encroach on the Muslim community’s ability to practice its faith. He has unfortunately jumped on the populist bandwagon which will draw plaudits from the LGBT lobby and his own parliamentary colleagues under the misapprehension that the Muslim community will be fine with this.

Another MP worthy of inclusion is Zarah Sultana. She brazenly says on Twitter: “I support a trans-inclusive ban! #BANCONVERSIONTHERAPY”

That she is a vocal supporter of Stonewall is also a cause for concern. Stonewall does not only seek good treatment of LGBTQ people but also acceptance of their choices to the extent that they want it imposed on children in schools. They have absolutely no problem when schools coerce Muslim children to take part in Pride marches.

And Apsana Begum MP – although she hasn’t spoken publicly in recent months in support of a ban – did Sign an Early Day Motion in 2020 supporting the banning of gay conversion therapy.

She is also a supporter of Bi-visility day which celebrates “bisexuality” and Trans day which celebrates the contribution of transgender and non-binary people.

Many other Muslim MPs may not stand out as visibly as these ones, but they will never advance the case of the Muslim community around these issues because they are so in thrall to popular sentiment and don’t want to rock the boat.

Whenever we are told to vote for Muslim representation in Parliament, is this what is meant? What is the point in electing Muslim MPs who advance the causes of others and work against the legitimate interests of our community?

The ironic thing is there are many non-Muslim MPs who will stand firm on a principle they believe in, even if it draws criticism. Yet we are so bereft of MPs with backbones that they can’t be counted on when it matters. When it came to gay marriage, the majority of Muslim MPs voted for it, when it came to statutory RSE we didn’t find representation from Muslim MPs.

So it is time that we held them to account for their brazen support of laws which will detrimentally impact our children, or else we’ll suffer in the long run.

Communal Harmony: Ludhiana Mosque Project Starts With Guru's Blessings In A Combined Ardas and Dua

Sikhs are major contributors of money and material to the project

----

May 22, 2022

LUDHIANA: In a fine example of communal harmony, the first 13 bricks for building a mosque were on Saturday blessed at Gurudwara Rai Patti of Pherurian in a combined Ardas and Dua before the village Sikhs and Muslims carried those to the construction site with respect. Sikhs are major contributors of money and material to the project.

Gurudwara president Iqbal Singh said: "We had a Gurudwara and temple in the village and wanted a mosque as well. The work started from a Gurudwara to promote Punjab-like communal harmony and brotherhood across the country. The village celebrates all the festivals together." The Sikhs who committed their money to the project include NRIs, besides Sant Baba Gurcharan Singh of Nanaksar. The Sikh-dominated village of 1,400 voters has just four Muslim families.

Inderjit Singh, a Muslim from the village, said: "We longed for a mosque in the village, for which we bought 4.5-biswa land for Rs 1.75 lakh about 10 years ago but did not have the resources to start the work until now." He said: "After the prayers at the gurdwara, the Sikh brothers carried the bricks with us. The mosque will be ready in a year and quicker if we get more help. Sikhs have been our major contributors." The outsiders are all praise for the villagers of Pherurian.

Nathowal villager Mansa Khan of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said: "Sikhs have helped build many mosques in Ludhiana and Raikot areas. We are proud of this tradition of communal harmony."

Ontario’s New Democrats and Liberals Would Bring In Law To Fight Islamophobia, Other Hate If Elected

Ontario's New Democrats and Liberals/ Toronto CTV

----

May 21, 2022

Ontario’s New Democrats and Liberals committed Wednesday to bringing in a law to fight Islamophobia and other forms of hate if elected to form government next month.

Speaking to reporters in Kingston, Ont., NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said addressing racism and hate is a priority for people who have experienced hateful attacks based on their race, faith or any other part of their identities.

She said she is proud of her party’s work with the National Council of Canadian Muslims in bringing forward legislation earlier this year to help address Islamophobia in Ontario (Canadian province). That bill, tabled in February, did not pass before the election campaign began.

“There’s just too much hate out there,” Horwath said. “We have an obligation and a responsibility, leaders do, to take that on and to listen when (a)community says we don’t want to just hear the words. We want you to take action.”

Horwath said it was “extremely disappointing” that the governing Progressive Conservatives did not support the bill.

“It was disrespectful,” she said, promising that her party would re-introduce the legislation.

Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca said his party would also pass the anti-Islamophobia legislation if elected on June 2.

“I said from the very beginning that we would move forward with legislation. I’ve already committed to moving as quickly as I can to pass the Our London Family Act,” he said at an unrelated announcement in Toronto on Wednesday.

The Taliban Drafts a 15-Article Bill for the Return of the Afghan Political And Military Figures

Return of the Afghan Political And Military Figures/ Khaama.com

By Saqalain Eqbal

21 May 2022

The Return and Communications with Former Afghan Officials and Political Figures Commission has released a list of fifteen articles that include provisions for “considering temporary accommodation” and “fulfilling the legitimate demands” of Afghan political and military figures, if they return.

The articles were posted on Twitter by Inamullah Samangani, the Taliban’s Deputy Spokesman, on Saturday May 21, quoting Shahabuddin Delavar, the head of the commission, who said that the “Intra-Afghan Reconciliation” plan had been considered in the past nine months.

The “Commission Secretariat” is mentioned in Articles 3 and 4, which is responsible for “technical” aspects as well as the protection for returnees and the provision of temporary accommodation.

The measure places a strong emphasis on identifying and encouraging people who would like to return to Afghanistan. If they return, the commission has pledged to protect their property, life, and “reputation.”

If there is a difficulty for the returnees, the measure specifies that the Taliban will deal with the offenders in a religious (Sharai) manner.

During a meeting in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, about 40 influential political figures and party leaders legitimized the war against the Taliban.

Those who gathered at Abdul Rashid Dostum’s house, the leader of the National Movement Party, issued a declaration warning the Taliban that if negotiations with the Taliban failed, they would resort to war and military confrontation.

What unites and divides the world's most prominent Islamic scholars?

Jaan Islam

21 May 2022

Two years after the Egyptian revolution, and just weeks after the country's first democratically elected president was deposed in a coup, thousands of protesters gathered at Cairo's Rabaa square. In the early hours of 14 August 2013, gunshots rang out as heavily armed Egyptian security forces moved in, firing on the crowds of peaceful protesters, including women and children.

Eye witnesses even reported security forces shooting at helpless civilians from helicopters, while protesters trying to flee were trapped at the square's exits. Although estimates of the death toll vary, scholar and author Usaama al-Azami estimates it might have reached into the thousands.

Fate of 2,500 Ukrainian POWs from steel plant stirs concern

MAY 22, 2022

With Russia claiming to have taken prisoner nearly 2,500 Ukrainian fighters from the besieged Mariupol steel plant, concerns grew about their fate as a Moscow-backed separatist leader vowed they would face tribunals. Russia has declared its full control of the Azovstal steel plant, which for weeks was the last holdout in Mariupol and a symbol of Ukrainian tenacity in the strategic port city, now in ruins with more than 20,000 residents feared dead. The seizure gives Russian President Vladimir Putin a badly wanted victory in the war he began nearly three months ago. As the West rallies behind Ukraine, Polish President Andrzej Duda arrived in Ukraine on an unannounced visit and will address the country's parliament on Sunday, his office said. Poland, which has welcomed millions of Ukrainian refugees since the start of the war, is a strong supporter of Ukraine's desire to join the European Union. With Russia blocking Ukraine's sea ports, Poland has become a major gateway for Western humanitarian aid and weapons going into Ukraine and has been helping Ukraine get its grain and other agricultural products to world markets. The Russian Defense Ministry released video of Ukrainian soldiers being detained after announcing that its forces had removed the last holdouts from the Mariupol plant’s extensive underground tunnels. It said a total of 2,439 had surrendered. Get unlimited digital access Subscribe now for just $2 for 2 months. CLAIM OFFER Family members of the fighters, who came from a variety of military and law enforcement units, have pleaded for them to be given rights as prisoners of war and eventually returned to Ukraine. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said Saturday that Ukraine “will fight for the return" of every one of them. Denis Pushilin, the pro-Kremlin head of an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by Moscow-backed separatists, said the captured fighters included some foreign nationals, though he did not provide details. He said they were sure to face a tribunal. Russian officials and state media

The taka faced less depreciation against the US dollar compared to other South Asian currencies in the last one year, eroding the export competitiveness of Bangladesh against its peers.

This seems that Bangladesh has been trying to tackle the ongoing global economic crisis by strengthening its currency artificially but it may leave an adverse impact on the macroeconomy, experts warned.

How Saudi Arabia can become the vanguard of sustainable tourism

ALEX WHITEMAN

May 22, 2022

LONDON: Saudi Arabia is stepping up its efforts to become the vanguard of a UN pledge to develop a sustainable model of tourism after the sector’s levels of resilience were pushed to breaking point by the pandemic and new dire warnings of tourism’s environmental footprint emerged.

Addressing the UN General Assembly on May 6, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb said lessons about tourism’s vulnerability to sudden, unexpected events must be taken from the pandemic — which cost the sector 62 million jobs worldwide — and changes made.

“COVID-19 highlighted the vulnerability of the sector, not only to pandemics but also to the effects of extreme weather, so addressing climate change must be at the heart of building a more resilient tourism, and there is no resilience without sustainability,” he said.
