Atlanta Muslim leaders on Orlando shooter: ‘He’s not us; we’re not him’

June 12, 2016

When Muhammad al-Ninowy awoke this morning to the news of the massacre at an Orlando nightclub, one of his first thoughts was, “I hope it’s not a Muslim.”

Once he learned that the shooter, Omar Mateen, had in fact aligned himself with ISIS, al-Ninowy dutifully composed a statement denouncing the worst mass shooting in American history.

“Yet again we find ourselves condemning the irrational and ungodly actions of a madman who was misguided by a wicked and corrupt social and/or political ideology that twists and misinterprets Islam to justify what can only be termed as satanic actions,” wrote al-Ninowy, president and founder of the Madina Institute USA, a Duluth mosque and seminary.

Such condemnations were echoed from virtually every mainstream Muslim group in the Atlanta area and beyond.

“Tolerance and acceptance must be shown to all individuals, regardless of their race, sex, religion, and sexual orientation,” stated the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Center.

Imam Arshad Anwar, leader of Roswell Community Masjid, promised the Muslim community will “continue its efforts to combat extremism and encourage tolerance.”

And the Masjid Uthman mosque in Dunwoody said, “There can never be any justification for such cowardly and criminal acts.”

Yet amid the nearly uniform condemnation exists a frustration among many Muslims who don’t believe they should be held

“We’re not even allowed to process these events before we’re called on to condemn them,” said Abbas Barzegar, an assistant professor of religion at Georgia State University.

But he acknowledged “perception is reality and Americans are hysterical about Islam and we need to respond to it.”

Barzegar said he’d prefer a more proactive approach, calling on Muslims to seek dialogue with the religion’s most fervent critics.

“It’s almost become a ritual,” he said of the condemnations of violence by mainstream Muslim leaders. “I’m not sure it even means anything anymore.”

Many adherents also regret that the attacks occurred so soon after the death of Muhammad Ali, recognized as a unifying force who “embodied the best of the world’s Muslim community, not this mass murderer,” according to Edward Ahmed Mitchell, executive director of the Georgia chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations.

A statement coordinated by CAIR was co-signed by 15 local Muslim groups. The organization has also launched a blood drive in solidarity with the victims in Orlando.

Meanwhile, the current political climate has left some Muslims more concerned than ever about a potential backlash.

“One of the most frustrating things as a parent is my inability to completely protect my children from the hateful rhetoric that follows one of these events,” said community activist Nidal Ibrahim, who has two children, ages 10 and 7. Because of those concerns, he said he was “relieved” school is out for the summer.

Al-Ninowy acknowledged “there is a cancer in our midst — they are people who claim to follow the religion we believe in and hold dearly, but their actions violate the very core principles of the religion and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.”

It’s a message he’s repeated many times, often to deaf ears.

Of Mateen, al-Ninowy said: “He's not us. We’re not him. I don’t know what else to say."

Babri Demolition, Godhra Riots Led Young Indian Men To Al Qaeda: Police

June 12, 2016

NEW DELHI:  Indians joining al Qaeda were moved by the 1992 Babri mosque demolition and 2002 Godhra riots and were committed to establish base of terror outfit al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Delhi Police has told a court.

In its chargesheet filed against 17 accused, Special Cell of Delhi Police said for the purpose of 'jihad', some of them had gone to Pakistan and had met Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and several other dreaded terrorists.

"While delivering jihadi speeches in various mosques, he (arrested accused Syed Anzar Shah) met Mohd Umar (one of the absconding accused) and they discussed atrocities on Muslims in India, especially Godhra and Babri Masjid issues," the chargesheet said.

"Umar got impressed with his jihadi ideology and speeches and committed himself to the cause of jihad and expressed the desire to receive arms/ammunition training from Pakistan," the chargesheet filed before Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh said. It said that Umar was operating from Pakistan.

Police said arrested accused Abdul Rehman had provided safe hideouts in India to Pakistani militants Salim, Mansoor and Sajjad, all members of Jaish-e-Mohammed, who were later killed in a shootout in Uttar Pradesh in 2001.

These three Pakistani terrorists had come to India to take revenge of Babri Masjid demolition and had planned to attack Ram Temple in Ayodhya but got killed, the chargesheet claimed.

The police named in its chargesheet 17 accused, 12 of whom are absconding, for allegedly conspiring, recruiting young Indian men and establishing a base of AQIS.

In its final report, the agency has charged five arrested accused -- Mohd Asif, Zafar Masood, Mohd Abdul Rehman, Syed Anzar Shah and Abdul Sami -- for alleged offences under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). All the 17 accused were listed in the chargesheet for alleged offences under sections 18 (punishment for conspiracy), 18-B (punishment for recruiting of any person for terror act) and 20 (punishment for being member of terror organisation) of the UAPA.

Brother Executes Brother in Gruesome ISIL Video

June 13, 2016

TEHRAN (FNA)- In a new shocking execution video released by the ISIL terrorist group, a militant shot dead his own brother on charges of spying for the Iraqi army, Kurdish Peshmerga forces, and the US-led coalition.

The footage shows an executioner, identified as Abu Abdullah, saying a prayer before he gunned down his older brother, as another blindfolded militant was killed by a second executioner on the same charge, Rudaw reported.

The footage, reportedly filmed in Iraq, opened with two militants wearing balaclavas bringing in the two blindfolded men, one of whom was identified as Abu Abdullah's brother.

The executioner then sent out a threatening message to those trying to leak intelligence information to the Iraqi and other counter-ISIL forces.

He also warned his family not to get involved in the matter of him killing his older brother.

The video was released as the group has been suffering a string of military defeats on multiple battlefields in Fallujah and surrounding Mosul in Iraq, and Manbij in Syria.

The grisly killing comes five months after another ISIL fighter killed his mother after she had reportedly tried to escape the group in Syria.

June 12, 2016

Juan Rivera was inside the Pulse nightclub Saturday night, when a 29-year-old Muslim American committed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Rivera has been missing ever since.

Less than a day later, his still hopeful brother, Baron Serrano, took to Facebook to tell the world that he knows the deranged shooter did not represent any religion. “I want to let people know that not everyone’s the same,” he said in the video stream. “Today I met real Islam and all they do is love.”

ISIS Snares Mostly Educated Young Men from India

Jun 13, 2016

NEW DELHI: Educated, middle-class youngsters in India appear to be more drawn to the Islamic State, moved as much by the terrorist group’s brand of global jihad as by perceived injustices against Muslims at home.

This marks a possible class shift among those attracted to violent groups in India, where religious radicalisation is thought to be more prevalent among the poor and illiterate, shows an analysis of the socioeconomic profile of the IS sympathisers interrogated by security agencies since 2014.

Orlando terror- India should never take Islamic radicals off the radar

Monday, June 13, 2016

The ISIS was quick to claim responsibility for the horrific terror attack at the Orlando nightclub in which 50 people were killed and 53 injured. The American President has called it both an act of terror as well a hate crime. The gunman who has been identified as Omar Mateen, a Florida resident and a US born son of an Afghan immigrant.

The FBI which is not yet ready to term it as an attack by the ISIS had however known the shooter. He had in fact come to the FBI's attention twice but was left off as the agency was unable to verify his terror links or comments he made in favour of the ISIS. Mateen had on several occasions indicated his leanings towards the ISIS. A lesson to be learnt: In the Orlando shooting there is a big lesson that the world needs to be learn. A person who has shown leanings towards terror outfits such as the ISIS can never be taken off the radar.

Pakistan not a state but a state of mind: Sangh journal

Jun 13, 2016

An RSS-affiliated think tank has asserted that Pakistan is “not a state” but a “state of mind” and urged Pakistan to “reexamine her cultural and civilisational roots”.

The right-wing think tank India Policy Foundation has expressed these views in the first issue of a quarterly journal, Pakistan Watch, which will be released Monday in Delhi by two top RSS members, joint general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale and all India prachar pramukh Manmohan Vaidya. India Policy Foundation’s honorary director Rakesh Sinha, who regularly appears on TV channels as a senior RSS ideologue, is the editor-in-chief, the first one dedicated to Pakistan by any right-wing body. It carries forward the Sangh Parivar’s argument that the solution to Pakistan’s “identity crisis” lies in realising its shared Hindu past and stresses Partition amounted to “self-alienation from culture” of Pakistan citizens.
