Association Of Protection Of Civil Rights Report Flags Pattern Of Targeted Violence Against Muslims, Discriminatory Policing In Uttarakhand

-------------

A fact-finding report released by the Association of Protection of Civil Rights on the recent violence in Uttarakhand has documented a pattern of targeted attacks against Muslim communities, accompanied by police inaction, selective enforcement of the law, and administrative excesses, particularly since late 2023.

According to the report, incidents of violence were recorded across several districts, including Uttarkashi, Srinagar, Gauchar, Kashipur, Haridwar, Nainital, Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Haldwani, and areas inhabited by Van Gujjars, with Muslim-owned homes, shops, and religious sites disproportionately affected.

The violence included arson, stone-pelting, vandalism, threats of eviction, and forced displacement, often following Hindutva rallies or rumours framed around Muslim religious identity.

The report notes that in multiple cases, police presence failed to prevent violence, and FIRs were either delayed or selectively registered.

Victims alleged that Muslim residents were booked under preventive sections to maintain “law and order,” while individuals delivering inflammatory speeches at public gatherings faced little or no immediate legal action, despite the availability of video evidence.

Data cited in the report show that preventive detentions and prohibitory orders were disproportionately imposed on Muslim residents following communal tensions.

In contrast, organisers of rallies linked to Hindu right-wing groups were rarely subjected to comparable restrictions. The report flags this as a recurring pattern of discriminatory policing.

The findings also point to the increasing use of collective punishment measures, including administrative notices threatening demolition, sealing of properties, or eviction, often without prior notice or a hearing.

The report argues that such actions bypass constitutional safeguards and contribute to further marginalisation of minority communities.

Beyond physical violence, the report documents the social and economic impact on Muslim families, many of whom temporarily fled their homes due to fear.

Women, children, and daily-wage workers were identified as among the most affected, with loss of livelihood and disruption to education reported in several localities.

The report situates the developments in Uttarakhand within a broader national context, warning that the state reflects a wider trend of normalised targeting of Muslims, where administrative power is increasingly used alongside majoritarian mobilisation.

It calls for independent judicial inquiries, accountability for hate speech, and strict adherence to constitutional protections to prevent further escalation.

US welcomes Iraq’s step to take Daesh militants from Syria

January 22, 2026

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos on Thursday. (AFP)

------------

WASHNGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that Washington welcomed Iraq’s initiative to detain Daesh members in secure facilities in Iraq while also urging nations to repatriate their citizens in these facilities “to face justice.”

“The United States welcomes the Government of Iraq’s initiative to detain Daesh terrorists in secure facilities in Iraq, following recent instability in northeast Syria,” Rubio said in a statement. “Non-Iraqi terrorists will be in Iraq temporarily; the United States urges countries to take responsibility and repatriate their citizens in these facilities to face justice.”

Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council said on Thursday it would begin legal proceedings against Daesh detainees transferred from Syria, a day after the US military announced its forces had transferred 150 of the suspected militants from Syria to Iraq.

The US military has said its operation could eventually see 7,000 detainees moved out of Syria.

The United Nations said it was taking management responsibility for vast camps in Syria housing tens of thousands of women and children associated with Daesh, after the rapid collapse of Kurdish-led forces who guarded them for years.

Iraq has begun taking in detainees transferred from prisons in Syria as the Kurds retreat, and has called on other countries to help take them in.

“This is a critical part of a long-term framework to prevent an Daesh resurgence, in line with proper burden sharing among Coalition members,” Rubio said on Thursday.

More than 10,000 members of Daesh, and tens of thousands of women and children associated with them, have been held for years in about a dozen prisons and detention camps guarded by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria’s northeast.

The SDF has rapidly retreated this week after clashes with Syrian government forces, raising concern about security at prisons and humanitarian conditions at the camps.

Joining Board of Peace reflects Saudi commitment to ending conflict in Gaza, says Prince Faisal

January 22, 2026

DAVOS: Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, signed the founding charter of US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” on Thursday.

The decision to participate reflected the Kingdom’s support for efforts to bring lasting peace to Gaza, he said.

Saudi Arabia was one of eight Arab and Islamic nations that announced on Wednesday they would join the initiative, which aims to stabilize and rebuild the war-ravaged Palestinian territory.

Prince Faisal signed the document during a ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump launched the charter at an event attended by a number of other founding nations, including Turkiye and Qatar.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the signing of the document showed the Kingdom’s “commitment to supporting the mission of the Board of Peace as a transitional administration to end the conflict in the Gaza strip, as adopted by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803.”

The move also reflected Saudi Arabia’s support for the reconstruction of Gaza and a push toward lasting peace, and it welcomed Trump’s peace efforts, the ministry added.

The US president helped broker a peace deal in September that largely ended Israel’s two-year war on Gaza, which devastated the territory and killed more than 70,000 Palestinians.

Horror attack at Accrington mosque saw man stabbed in buttocks after leaving Friday prayers

Jon Macpherson

22 Jan 2026

Murtaza Khan and Aiwaz Hussain will be sentenced next month

----------

Two thugs are facing jail for their roles in a horror attack outside an Accrington mosque where a man was stabbed in the buttocks after leaving Friday prayers.

Police rushed to Lower Antley Street at 2.37pm on July 18 following reports of an assault which happened outside Raza Jamia Masjid. Officers arrived to find a man in his 40s had suffered stab injuries to his buttocks.

He was taken to hospital but thankfully his injuries were not life-threatening. CCTV footage showed Ishaq Hussain in possession of a knife and making stabbing motions towards the lower part of the victim’s body.

Murtaza Khan assaulted the victim before he was tripped to the floor and was holding him down as he was being stabbed. At 5.18pm the same day, officers were called to Craven Street following reports of a separate assault which had happened in Richmond Street in Accrington.

CCTV footage showed the victim getting out of a Skoda Superb and approaching Aiwaz Hussain. An altercation then took place slightly off camera during which the victim was stabbed in the neck.

An ambulance was initially called, however the victim was taken up to Royal Blackburn Hospital by his family. It was there that he had life-saving surgery on a 3cm deep puncture wound to the jugular. He has since been discharged from hospital.

Khan, 20, of Porter Street, Preston, pleaded guilty to Section 18 Assault when he appeared in the dock at Preston Crown Court on Tuesday (January 20). Ishaq Hussain, 33, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the same charge at an earlier hearing.

Aiwaz Hussain, 23, of Monk Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to Section 18 Assault and possession of a bladed article, when he appeared in the dock alongside Khan on Tuesday. A sentencing hearing will take place at Preston Crown Court on February 24.

In a statement, a force spokesperson said: "Our officers still need to speak to 32-year-old Imtiaz Hussain as part of these incidents, as well as a knife point robbery. Imtiaz also answers to Imran, Immy, Amtiaz and Haroon, and has links to Accrington, Preston and London.

"Imtiaz is 5ft 9, slim, with brown eyes and short black hair. Last time we saw him he had a thin black moustache and black hair on his chin, however he has previously had a full beard. Don’t approach Imtiaz if you see him, as he can be violent. However, call 999.

"You can also report information to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."

CAIR Says New Report is Further Evidence that Disinformation Drives Anti-Muslim Extremism

January 22, 2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today said a newly-released study published by Equality Labs showing that more than 4.7 million Islamophobic social media posts targeted Muslim communities in the United States in 2025, spreading harmful narratives such as the manufactured “Muslim invasion” theory is further evidence that disinformation drives anti-Muslim extremism

Equality Labs’ study found Islamophobic content not only widespread on major social media platforms but also increasingly echoed by certain public officials. Themes identified include conspiracy theories about Muslims undermining American society, calls to investigate Muslim organizations and leaders, and demands for deportation of Muslim residents.

“Equality Labs’ report shows that Texas and Florida were the top states associated with Islamophobic related disinformation in 2025,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor. “Disinformation is driving policy with real harms. Public officials in both of those states drove campaigns in 2025 painting Muslims as suspicious and outside the circle of protected religious and civic life.”

He noted that last year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report, Unconstitutional Crackdowns, which reveals that Islamophobia remains at record-high levels nationwide.

Six Killed In Sokoto, Others Abducted In Kogi As Troops, Police Intensify Crackdown On Bandits

January 23, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

At least six villagers were killed in the Baidi community, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, during a violent night raid by suspected Lakurawa bandits on Wednesday, marking another bloody chapter in the region’s ongoing struggle against cross-border terrorism.

Eyewitnesses told Punch that the armed men stormed the community at nightfall, shooting indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into the bush.

“This is not the first time they have attacked our village, killed people and fled,” a resident said, linking the assault to the village’s refusal to obey directives allegedly issued by the bandits.

He recalled that the Village Head of Sanyinna had been previously killed under similar circumstances.

Communities in Tangaza, Binji, Gudu, Illela LGAs and neighbouring border towns in Kebbi State have repeatedly suffered from Lakurawa-linked attacks.

Thursday funeral prayers were held for the Baidi victims, who were buried shortly after.

100-Year-Old Chief, Son Abducted In Kogi

In a separate incident in Kabba/Bunu LGA of Kogi State, gunmen kidnapped two members of the same family, 100-year-old Chief Samuel Fagbemi and 50-year-old Chief Zacheus Sunday Fagbemi, a vigilante member.

The attackers reportedly arrived at the Ihale-Bunu community around 4:00 p.m. on over 20 motorcycles, heavily armed and moving with precision.

Police were yet to confirm the incident as of press time, and efforts to reach the state’s Police PRO, ASP Saliu Oyiza, were unsuccessful.

Residents lamented the absence of security forces, calling for immediate deployment to rescue the abductees.

Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, recorded major operational successes in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states between 21–22 January, according to a military statement.

Troops from 8 Division’s Garrison Strike Force, working with the DSS, engaged terrorists in Gundumi Village, Isa LGA, killing one and recovering six AK-47 rifles and three motorcycles.

A follow-up raid led troops to Bingi Forest, where a makeshift medical facility treating wounded fighters was destroyed.

“These missions form part of sustained efforts to decisively degrade terrorist networks and restore peace,” said Capt. David Adewusi, Media Officer for the Operation.

62 Hostages Freed, Terrorists Killed

In another operation, 62 hostages were rescued from Munhaye Forest, Zamfara State, a known hideout of bandit kingpin Kachalla Alti.

Also, in Kerani Village near the Kebbi-Sokoto border, troops ambushed Lakurawa fighters, killing two and seizing motorcycles used for long-range movement.

Separately, the Sokoto State Police Command announced a major breakthrough in its fight against kidnapping, extortion, and financial fraud.

At a press briefing on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Musa confirmed multiple arrests across Wamakko, Silame, and Yabo LGAs.

He said operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit raided a hideout at Rugar Woro on January 18, arresting two key suspects: Abdulrazak Salihu (aka Monosa) and Habibu Sahabi (aka Habibi).

Recovered items included fake currencies (naira, dollar, CFA), a POS machine, fetish items, and charms.

“These items point to the gang’s involvement in advanced financial fraud and psychological intimidation,” the CP stated.

Three suspects are still on the run.

Musa also confirmed fresh arrests linked to levy collection and extortion in Silame and Yabo, and issued a warning, “To those still at large, I advise you to surrender or face the full consequences of the law. If you see something, say something, and the police will definitely do something.”

He added that the intelligence-led strategy adopted since late 2025 is yielding results, especially in remote areas previously overwhelmed by banditry.

In Indonesia, faith and fun collide after sexy dangdut show at Islamic event

Jan 23, 2026

One song, one stage and one banner were all it took to ignite a national debate in Indonesia over the boundaries of faith and fun.

In Banyuwangi, a regency in East Java, a stage was set to celebrate Isra’ Mi’raj, one of Islam’s most sacred nights commemorating Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and his ascension to heaven. The setting was intended for sermons and prayer.

But, on Jan 16, what followed the sermons and prayer was something else entirely: A dangdut singer in a skin-tight tube dress took the stage, her hips swaying to the lively dance beat of dangdut in the Osing dialect, while a man climbed onto the stage to dance and tip her.

Someone filmed it. Within hours, the clip spread across social media, unsettling many in the public.

Isra’ Mi’raj is solemn, while dangdut performances thrive on physical closeness and crowd interaction. For critics, the two worlds had collided.

Organisers insisted there had been no disrespect.

Mr Muhammad Hadiyanto, head of the local committee, said the religious programme had ended, and the clerics had left before the music began. The performance, he said, was intended only to entertain committee members during the clean-up.

“I apologise sincerely for the misunderstanding that occurred,” he said on Jan 16.

The apology did little to quell outrage. Religious leaders called it a moral failure.

“This incident is deeply regrettable,” said Mr Sunandi Zubaidi, deputy chairman of Banyuwangi’s Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), on Jan 16. “The nobility of dakwah (Islamic preaching) has been stained by actions that do not reflect Islamic values.”

He warned that sacred events should not be mixed with acts leading to immorality, including exposing aurat (intimate parts of the body according to Islam), erotic dancing and ikhtilat (mingling of men and women). He added that such actions could constitute blasphemy.

Lawmakers echoed the concern. Parliamentarian Singgih Januratmoko said the issue cut to the heart of how society protects the sanctity of religion.

“The claim that the entertainment was held after the main event does not in itself resolve the issue,” he said on Jan 19. “From a religious standpoint, the setting, symbols and context are inseparable.”

Police said no criminal offence had been committed, but confirmed the dangdut show was not listed in the event permit.

Whose responsibility?

Public anger was initially directed at the singer. Among cultural observers and industry insiders, however, the responsibility lay elsewhere: with the organisers.

“If you invite a dangdut singer, she is simply doing her job. She comes to perform. Please do not blame the artiste. We do not know what happened behind the scenes,” Mr Muhamad Said, founder of Koji Management Artistes and Talents, told The Straits Times. The dangdut singer involved in the incident was not represented by his agency.

Organisers must understand the nature of an event and ensure performances align with its concept and audience. For religious occasions, that might mean selecting “religious dangdut” styles, such as marawis percussion ensembles, modestly dressed singers, or religious songs, Mr Said noted.

According to him, managers must also weigh timing, audience and context before sending an artiste to an assignment. Energetic or provocative performers are avoided for solemn events, while those with a religious repertoire are preferred. If organisers misrepresent an event or fail to provide full details, adjustments can sometimes be made on-site.

“When a clip goes viral, people only see what happens on stage. They do not see the preparation behind the scenes – the coordination, the briefings, the warnings.

“Yet the public reaction is often, ‘Why is dangdut like this?’” he added.

Dangdut, one of Indonesia’s most popular music genres, is built on hypnotic, tabla-like rhythms and blends Indian percussion, Malay melodies and Arabic phrasing.

It emerged in the 1930s and gained prominence in the 1950s during President Sukarno’s anti-Western cultural drive, which restricted Hollywood films but allowed Hindi cinema. By the 1960s, local singers appeared, though the genre remained closely tied to villages and the social underclass.

In the 1970s, Indonesia’s “King of Dangdut” Rhoma Irama electrified dangdut with guitars and rock influences drawn from bands such as Deep Purple, bringing the genre beyond rural communities. He rebranded his group, Soneta, as “The Voice of Moslem”, blending dangdut with Islamic themes. He also introduced gender separation on stage and replaced rock elements with religiously oriented performances.

Early concerts were met with hostility, with stones and sandals thrown at the stage. MUI initially declared it haram – forbidden under Islamic law – to sing Quranic verses but later endorsed the dangdut legend’s work.

Like other Indonesian musical art forms such as jaipongan and campursari, dangdut has increasingly incorporated sexually suggestive lyrics and raunchy dance moves, testing boundaries in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.

Dangdut is no stranger to controversy. In 2003, dangdut star Inul Daratista sparked outrage with a dance move dubbed “goyang ngebor”, or “drilling dance”, where she would make rapid hip movements as if drilling the ground. The move was later banned in several provinces.

The late Julia Perez continued the boundary-testing trend with revealing costumes and sexually charged lyrics, drawing comparisons to Western pop stars such as Lady Gaga.

Traditional dangdut musicians argue that such performances tarnish the genre and erode moral values. Yet, the racy style remains wildly popular, highlighting a persistent tension between culture and entertainment, and conservative norms.

Mr Endo Suanda, an ethnomusicologist who has long studied traditional performing arts, said the issue lies instead with placing performances perceived as vulgar, sensual or erotic in a public religious space.

“Art like this exists because there is an audience for it. The question is not taste, but placement. In a religious event, I would say that kind of performance is highly inappropriate, indecent and improper.

“The problem is not the art but the organiser,” he told ST.

Social media amplifies outrage

Social media has intensified disputes over performances at religious events. Clips that might once have remained local now circulate nationwide within hours, often detached from context.

“They all have no brains, just arrest the committee, do not forgive them, that is blasphemy, just arrest them so it can be a lesson for others,” said YouTube user AlimuhammadAzwar.

“This is religious blasphemy and cannot be forgiven,” added another user, BeriPutra.

The Banyuwangi incident echoed a similar controversy in Wonosobo just months earlier during a Maulid Nabi celebration in September 2025 to mark Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

A female Ndolalak dancer performing to dangdut music was later joined on stage by a young man, while several audience members – including military personnel – filmed the act. Organisers said it was a local youth initiative and stressed that the performance took place after the main programme had concluded.

Experts said organisers must recognise that inappropriate performances carry consequences in the social media era.

“If the organiser deliberately wants that kind of performance, there will be social sanctions. Today, everyone has a mobile phone. Everything can be uploaded,” said Mr Said.

Mr Endo added that online outrage does not always reflect the views of local communities.

“Social media creates a new kind of community. People who are not directly involved can become furious because they encounter the issue online.

“That does not mean local communities are unaffected. There are certainly people on the ground who feel offended as well,” he said.

He also cautioned against blaming artistes based solely on viral content.

“Artistes do not exist in isolation. They live in society and respond to audience demand. It is unfair to blame them without also looking at the audience and the organisers,” he said.

In Banyuwangi, the stage has been dismantled and the banner removed. Yet the question persists long after the speakers are switched off: not whether the music should exist, but who decides when, and where, it must stop.

Two dead teachers assigned election duties in Jamalpur, Bangladesh

22 Jan 2026

Two deceased teachers have been assigned duties as assistant presiding officers for the 13th National Election in the Jamalpur-1 constituency (Dewanganj-Bokshiganj).

Dewanganj upazila election office yesterday issued letters in the names of the two teachers, instructing them to attend training sessions for election duties.

The teachers were identified as Md Abdul Karim and Ataur Rahman. Karim, an assistant teacher at Char Magurihat Dakhil Madrasa in Dewanganj, died of illness on August 2, 2024. Ataur Rahman, who served as an assistant teacher at Polakandi High School in the same upazila, passed away about four months ago.

According to the letters, signed by upazila election officer Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, training sessions for assistant presiding officers have been arranged on January 24 and 25 at Dewanganj Government Abdul Khalek Memorial Degree College. Selected officials were instructed to attend the training.

The list of assistant presiding officers attached to the letters included the names of the two deceased teachers.

Md Shafiul Alam, superintendent of Char Magurihat Dakhil Madrasa, said, “Abdul Karim’s name was not included in the list sent from the madrasa for election duty. I do not understand how his name was added.”

Abul Kalam Azad, acting head teacher of Polakandi High School, said, “Ataur Rahman died four months ago. I have no idea how his name appeared on the list of assistant presiding officers.”

Responding to the issue, upazila election officer Rafiqul told The Daily Star, “Due to an unintentional mistake and technical error, the names of the two deceased teachers were included in the list. Their names have been removed from the final list.”

Mohammad Yusuf Ali, Jamalpur deputy commissioner and returning officer, said, “We will investigate how the names of deceased teachers were included.”

Owaisi urges Jaishankar to rescue 16 Indians allegedly enslaved on Myanmar-Thailand border

22.01.26

AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday urged external affairs minister S. Jaishankar to intervene for the rescue of at least 16 Indian nationals who were allegedly trafficked and enslaved along the Myanmar-Thailand border after being promised jobs in Thailand.

According to Owaisi, the group includes three men from Hyderabad. One of them, Mir Sajjad Ali, is a resident of Osman Nagar. The other two are from Maula Ali and Banjara Hills.

Owaisi said he received information directly from Ali, who is currently being held at the Myanmar-Thailand border. Taking to X, the AIMIM chief flagged the issue publicly and sought immediate action from the Centre.

“I have received a distressing message: at least 16 Indian nationals, including three from Hyderabad, were promised jobs in Thailand but taken to the Myanmar-Thailand border and enslaved,” Owaisi said in his post.

He alleged that the victims are being forced to work long hours under harsh conditions. “They are forced to work 18-20 hours daily, physically punished, and deprived of passports, phones, and medical facilities,” he said.

Tagging the External Affairs Minister, Owaisi appealed for urgent intervention. “@DrSJaishankar, kindly intervene urgently to ensure the rescue of all Indians,” he wrote.

Owaisi also identified the source of the information in the same post. “This information comes from Mir Sajjad Ali, a resident of Osman Nagar, Hyderabad, currently incarcerated at the Myanmar-Thailand border. Two others with him are from Maula Ali and Banjara Hills.”

Invoking the old adage, ‘Miya Biwi Raazi, Nahi Maan Rahaa Qazi’ (husband and wife are willing, but judge is not agreeing), the Rajasthan High Court recently set aside a family court’s order refusing dissolution of a Muslim marriage despite both spouses consenting to divorce, observing that Mubarat, a form of mutual divorce recognised under Muslim personal law, is a valid mode of dissolution of marriage.

A bench of Justices Arun Monga and Yogendra Kumar Purohit while allowing the appeal filed by the woman, passed the decree declaring the marriage as dissolved.

The bench passed a decree declaring dissolution of marriage. The bench passed a decree declaring dissolution of marriage.

After it was pointed out that similar petitions wherein dissolution of marriage is sought by invoking Muslim law were routinely rejected by Family Courts in Rajasthan, the court issued the following guidelines for the family courts –

1) If it is pleaded in the petition that marriage between the parties has already been dissolved under Muslim Law through extra-judicial divorce, the Family Court shall seek the personal presence of the parties to record their statements to the same effect and satisfy itself that it is without any coercion or duress and on their own volition;

2) If it is pleaded that divorce has been reduced in writing by way of an agreement, whatever be its nature, i.e., Mubaraat Nama or Talaq Nama or Khula Nama, same shall be required to be produced before the Court so as to satisfy it qua the veracity thereof.

3) Upon being satisfied, the court shall exercise its jurisdiction under Section 7 (jurisdiction) of the Family Courts Act, 1984 to pass appropriate order/decree, applying its mind independently as per its judicial outlook, qua the status of the marriage between parties.

Background

The marriage of the couple was solemnised in accordance with Muslim Sharia.

After the marriage, serious disputes arose between the parties due to persistent differences in temperament and ideology, resulting in strained relations.

During the subsistence of the marriage, the husband pronounced talaq upon the wife in accordance with Muslim law.

Subsequently, both the parties admitted that they executed a written divorce agreement by mutual consent.

The wife sought a decree of divorce before the family court.

The family court dismissed her application for dissolution of marriage. Feeling aggrieved, she approached the high court.

Findings

The wife and the husband both categorically pleaded and unambiguously stated before the Court that during the subsistence of the marriage, the husband pronounced talaq upon the wife in accordance with Muslim law.

The wife accepted the said pronouncements. Consequently, the marital relationship between the parties stood dissolved. This being the ultimate fact situation, the Family Court erred in holding that the wife had failed to prove that the husband had duly divorced her.

Under Muslim law, the conditions for a valid khula or mubaarat divorce primarily involve mutual consent, free will, and the existence of a clear agreement or declaration, with the process often requiring the involvement of a Qazi or a court to endorse and declare the divorce.

Both forms are recognised modes of dissolution, but they differ in initiation and procedural requirements.

Such a divorce is valid provided the parties act voluntarily, and the court’s role is to verify the validity of the agreement or declaration, often through a summary process, without detailed enquiry.

The wife is entitled to a decree of declaration that her marriage stands dissolved on the basis/ground of dissolution of their marriage by way of ‘mubarat’ recognised under the Muslim Personal law.

CM: Beware of those in guise ofseers trying to harm Sanatan

Jan 22, 2026

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday cautioned people against those trying to harm Sanatan Dharm under the guise of seers and religious men. He also issued a terse warning against love jihad, illegal conversions and anti-national conspiracies, saying that exploitation of "daughters" in any form will not be tolerated.

Attending the Asht Maan Bhandara of the Nath tradition at Baba Nagewala Dham in Murthal, Sonipat as the Peethadhishwar of the Gorakhshnath Peeth, the CM cautioned people against 'Kalnemis', referring to a demon in Ramayana who had dressed up as a sage to prevent Lord Hanuman from getting the Sanjeevani Booti to Lakshman, accusing people of trying to harm Sanatan Dharma under the guise of seers and religious men.

"Society must remain vigilant against unlawful activities and sages should come forward to counter them. For a Yogi, saint, or ascetic, nothing is greater than Dharma and the Nation. This alone should be the purpose of life. Such a person has no personal property, dharma is his only wealth and the Nation his self-respect. If anyone challenges national self-respect, one must stand up openly against it," he said.

Assuring people that illegal religious conversions and anti-national activities will be completely curbed, the CM said that there will be strict action against any conspiracy to alter the demography of the country and to exploit girls in the name of love jihad. The CM mentioned a 2009 observation of the Kerala High Court to state that love jihad had been named as part of a conspiracy to turn Kerala into an Islamic state, and that similar attempts were being seen across many states currently.

He also expressed concern over the gradual disintegration of the joint family system and stressed on the need to revive it. Saying that family, values, and cultural consciousness lead to nation building, the CM added that dharma not only provided a method of worshipping but was also a path of upliftment and progress.

Praising the Nath Panth as one of India's most ancient spiritual traditions, he added that the Nath tradition has always inspired social unity and purposeful living.

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the vision of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat' is becoming a reality. After enduring nearly a thousand years of foreign invasions, India has broken the chains of slavery and is moving again toward its former glory. In the Amrit Kaal of Independence, the campaign led by PM Modi links the welfare of India and Sanatan Dharma inseparably. A strong Sanatan Dharma strengthens the path of global human welfare, making a strong India essential," Yogi Adityanath said.

Describing the development of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham and the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya as examples of India's resurgence, the CM said that crores of people are visiting Ayodhya and Prayagraj peacefully, with record participation at the Magh Mela this year. This era and the next 1,000 years belong to India, he said, adding that this was the time to take Sanatan Dharma to its highest glory through collective efforts.

The CM also took a strong stance against drugs, alleging that India's enemies who could not stand up against the government, armed forces and police, were trying to harm the nation by pushing narcotics across the borders, and appealed to people to shun such activities.

He also praised Haryana's efforts to revive the Saraswati river, adding that no one had the right to pollute rivers.

In Assam, ‘forged’ forms aimed at deleting thousands of Muslim voters ring alarm bells

Rokibuz Zaman

Jan 23, 2026

On January 19, Sumona Rahman Choudhury and 14 other booth level officers in Assam’s Sribhumi district were called for a training session as part of the ongoing “special revision” of electoral rolls ahead of the Assembly elections this year.

The first draft of the state’s voter roll was published on December 27, after a door-to-door verification by booth level officers led to 10 lakh voter names being marked out for deletion. As is the norm, the Election Commission then invited claims and objections to further vet the draft roll for accuracy.

Any voter can file an objection if he believes someone has been wrongly included in the constituency’s electoral roll, using Form 7.

When Choudhary turned up for the session, she said that district officials handed her several objection forms, challenging the inclusion of 133 voters in her booth in Srimanta Kanishail village in Karimganj North assembly segment. The forms were “half-printed and half-handwritten”, she said.

All the objections had been filed by one person, who claimed that the 133 voters, all of them Muslims, had either permanently shifted from the village or were being enrolled twice.

But Choudhary, a teacher at the village government school, knew that to be false. “During the house-to-house enumeration, I found them at their residence and collected their signatures,” she said. “They have not shifted. They are genuine voters. The document of the Election commission that they signed is proof.”

Choudhary added: “Among the names was the headmaster of my school. Some of them are parents of my students. How could I ask them to come to a hearing to prove they are genuine voters?”

Who filed the objections?

Even more curiously, the list of 133 names included the complainant, Salim Ahmed, and his relatives. “This means Salim had filed an objection against his own inclusion,” Choudhary said.

She then called Ahmed to ask him if he had indeed filed the objections. “He denied it altogether,” she said. “He said he was not insane to have complained against himself, his brother and sister-in-law. ”

When Scroll contacted Ahmed, he had reached the Sribhumi district election office to file a complaint against the misuse of his name and voter identity card. “I have not filed any objections,” he said. “Do you think I will file a complaint seeking deletion of my own name?”

The Election Commission decided to exempt Assam, for now, from the controversial Special Intensive Revision that is being carried out in several states. But the ongoing special revision, which involves door-to-door verification of voters, has also led to widespread fears of disenfranchisement of minority voters – especially during the claims and objections process.

In several Muslim-majority districts and areas of Assam, bulk objections have been filed against voters, seeking to strike their names off the electoral roll. Thousands of voters are being called to hearings to prove that they are not dead or “permanently shifted” as the objections claim, triggering panic and anxiety among Bengal-origin Muslims.

As Choudhary discovered, the process is open to manipulation.

Scroll found six other instances in addition to Ahmed where people said their names, voter identity cards and phone numbers had been used without their consent or knowledge to file objections against hundreds of electors in several constituencies.

Complaints have been filed in several districts, alleging that voters were sought to be deleted in bulk in order to influence the electoral process. In Nagaon district, the hearing process has been suspended in three Assembly constituencies after complaints of fake Form 7 applications.

Any voter of an Assembly constituency can fill out a Form 7, seeking the deletion of names of other voters from the same constituency or raise an objection to their inclusion in the electoral rolls if they have died or if they have shifted out.

Videos have also emerged of Hindu voters, declaring that their names have been wrongfully used to seek deletion of other voters. The Lakhimpur and Morigaon district administrations have put out public notices, warning people from filing such dubious complaints.

Opposition parties and minority leaders have accused the BJP of pressuring the Election Commission officials to delete voters, especially Muslims. They pointed to recent statements by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma calling for “illegal Miyas” to be deleted from the voter list.

Miya Muslims is a pejorative term used for Bengal-origin Muslims in Assam, who are often vilified as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh despite having roots in Assam that go back before Independence.

Similar allegations had surfaced in Karnataka’s Aland assembly constituency last year, where the names of 5,994 voters were sought to be deleted ahead of the 2023 state election through fake objection forms.

An FIR was registered on the alleged voter fraud based on a complaint filed by the Returning Officer. The police investigation revealed that a former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Subhash Guttedar from Aland and his son Harshananda Guttedar allegedly hired a private firm to target voters and delete their names through forged Form 7s.

Scroll contacted the Election Commission, asking about allegations that there was a conspiracy to delete voters in bulk, and if forged Form 7 applications were being used for the purpose. The story will be updated if they respond.

‘One person filed over 100 objections’

A senior Election Commission official in Guwahati told Scroll that a voter can submit any number of such objections. “However, to prevent misuse of the process, if a person files more than five objections, an electoral registration officer will review the complaints individually,” the official said.

Once the Form 7 objections are filed, they are sent to BLOs for an on-ground verification, after which they are processed. However, in most cases, BLOs blindly accept the applications without verification and summon the voters for hearing, local political leaders told Scroll.

In Sribhumi, however, Choudhary and the other BLOs objected to the instructions from the district officials and the bulk objections. “In several cases, one person had filed over 100 forms,” Choudhary said.

She added: “We asked how we could initiate Form 7 against genuine voters. But the officials reiterated that we should go ahead.”

However, Choudhary stuck to her stance and returned the forms to the district election office.

Sribhumi district commissioner Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi, however, told Scroll that district officials were only following the procedure.

“It is the job of the BLO to verify whether an objection form is genuine or the objector authentic,” he said. “Based on that, they can summon people for hearing. Based on the outcome of the hearing, the ERO takes the decision. No name is deleted by bypassing the procedure. The process is being followed."

He added that even if a complaint has been filed with malafide intentions against legitimate voters, a hearing is necessary to establish the truth.

The scale of objections and summons has led several observers to draw parallels with the re-verification process during the process to update the National Register of Citizens in 2019, in which people were given – like with the special revision process – 24 hours to attend the hearings.

A senior Election Commission official quoted above told Scroll that about 56,000 objections have been rejected as of January 19. The claims and objections process had begun on December 27.

Advocate Masud Zaman claimed that election officials had told him that over 26,000 objections had been filed in five constituencies of Dhubri district, which is a Muslim-majority area.

The number was confirmed by Dhubri election officer Sugata Siddhartha Goswami. “Before calling people for a hearing, we will verify whether the forms are genuine or not,” Goswami said. “Both the objector and the person against whom the complaint has been filed will be called for hearing.”

Zaman pointed out that even if the complainants do not turn up or turn out to be fake, there is little redress for the voters being harassed. “I asked the election officials if legal action could be taken against those complainants who do not turn up. They had no reply.”

Iranian apple shortage pushes Indian prices higher amid Ramadan demand

January 22, 2026

by Swasti Jain

Nationwide anti-government protests in Iran since late December 2025 have affected India’s apple supply chain with a shortage in Iranian apples, triggering a decline in imports and a hike in prices.

The impact is most visible at Pune’s Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Gultekdi Market Yard. Traders claim that Iranian apples have become scarce. Weekly arrivals have plummeted from 8,000 to 10,000 crates to a mere 4,000 to 4,500 crates. The shortage came with a price surge of 150 to 200 per 10 kg across the wholesale market. November to February is the season when Iranian apples are imported to India.

“In the wholesale market, Iranian apples are currently selling at 1,350 to 1,500 per 10 kg, while Afghan apples are at 900 to 1,000 per 10 kg,” said Satyajit Zende, Director of Shri Gurudevdatta Agency. As Iranian supplies have dried up, Afghan apple prices have risen just as sharply, narrowing the gap between the two. The government’s recent move to reduce import duties on New Zealand apples from 50% to 25% offers little respite. Despite the tariff reduction, premium New Zealand varieties remain out of reach for most Indian consumers.

As Zende explains, “New Zealand apples are high-quality, but even with reduced import tax, most citizens won’t buy them. Ultimately, they cater only to the elite classes.” He stressed that duty relief cannot overcome the fundamental affordability gap. Iranian apples have always been in demand in India due to their good quality and comparatively low prices.

Environmental factors have compounded the crisis. Zende noted that apple crops in producing regions like Turkey have yielded less this season, while inadequate snowfall in key cultivating countries has stunted harvests.

Mayur Sapkal, Founder and CEO of Gurudatta Impex Private Limited, lays down the import duty structure, “Afghanistan has duty-free access to Indian markets. Iran faces a 51% tariff. Turkey, Poland, Chile, the USA, and South Africa all carry duties between 50% and 51%.”

With the second week of February marking the beginning of Ramadan, a period when fruit consumption traditionally surges, the unease amongst the consumers has amplified. Yet, there is a silver lining. India’s own apple production, supported by Controlled Atmosphere (CA) cold storage technology, is gradually filling the gap. “India has its own CA cold storage chambers, which support sustainability and boost production volumes,” Zende said. Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, India’s two major apple-producing regions, have successfully leveraged CA technology. Their apples are typically released into the market around February 1, thereby providing price relief just as Ramadan demand peaks. Until then, the market remains tightened, and consumers must navigate the dual pressures of limited supplies and high costs.

India skips Trump’s Gaza ‘Board of Peace’ launch at Davos, weighs invite amid concerns

Jayanth Jacob

22 Jan 2026

NEW DELHI: India was among the notable absentees when US President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled his proposed “Board of Peace” on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, an initiative Washington is projecting as a new international body to help cement the fragile Gaza ceasefire and potentially address conflicts elsewhere.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among several global leaders invited to join the board, but New Delhi has yet to take a decision.

“India is considering various aspects as the initiative involves sensitive issues. We are examining the invite,” sources familiar with the matter said.

Unveiling the plan, the US president said the board could become “one of the most consequential bodies ever created”, adding that he was “honoured” to chair it. “Once this board is completely formed, we can do pretty much whatever we want to do. And we’ll do it in conjunction with the United Nations,” Trump said, while arguing that the UN’s “great potential” had not been fully utilised.

The announcement, made during a signing ceremony in the Swiss mountain resort, drew a mixed global response.

Regional Middle East powers such as Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, along with Indonesia and Pakistan, joined the board. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was also present.

However, several major global powers and traditional Western US allies, including France, the United Kingdom, Germany, China and Italy, skipped the ceremony.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the board’s immediate focus would be Gaza. “The priority is making sure the plan for peace in Gaza is fulfilled, but it can also serve as an example of what’s possible in other parts of the world,” he said.

Trump suggested the board’s mandate could extend well beyond Gaza, prompting concerns that it could undercut the UN’s role as the primary forum for global diplomacy and conflict resolution.

The board’s charter describes it as “an international organisation that seeks to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict”, arguing that durable peace requires “the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed.”

At the ceremony, Trump expressed confidence that progress was imminent on multiple fronts.

“I believe another settlement is coming very soon,” he said, before turning to the Ukraine war, adding: “The one I thought was going to be an easy one has turned out to be probably the most difficult.”

He also thanked those in attendance, including former UK prime minister Tony Blair. “Thank you Tony for being here, we appreciate it. It is running beautifully… just about every country wants to be a part of it,” Trump said.

The White House has already announced a founding executive board to operationalise the initiative. It includes Rubio, Blair, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, World Bank President Ajay Banga, Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan and US national security adviser Robert Gabriel.

Countries that have formally joined the Board of Peace include Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE and Uzbekistan.

Several others — among them Germany, Italy, Russia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Türkiye — have indicated they are still weighing the proposal.

Nine detained after alleged mob attack on pastor in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district

Subhashish Mohanty

23.01.26

Police have detained nine persons in connection with the alleged mob attack on a pastor at Kandarsinga village under Parjanga block in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district earlier this month.

The incident, which took place on January 4, came to public notice after the detentions this week. The pastor was allegedly assaulted by a group that accused him of attempting religious conversion, a charge that is yet to be established.

The pastor, identified in the FIR as Bipin Bihari Naik, was attacked when he went to a local resident’s house on invitation, police said. The complaint was filed on January 13 by his wife, Bandana Naik. Police detained the latest five suspects on Wednesday, after detaining four earlier.

Superintendent of police, Dhenkanal, Abhinav Sonkar told The Telegraph: “An FIR was registered on January 13. Earlier we detained four people and have now detained another five. The investigation is on. More people are likely to be interrogated in this connection.”

Christian community leaders have claimed that the pastor was forced to eat cow dung during the assault, but the copy of the FIR accessed by this newspaper does not mention that allegation.

According to the FIR, the pastor had been invited by Krishna Naik, a local resident, to offer prayers for his health and well-being. The

complaint alleges that while Bipin was inside the house at around 11am, a group of 15 to 20 persons, allegedly Bajrang Dal members, arrived on motorcycles, armed with bamboo sticks and forcibly entered the premises.

The FIR alleges that the pastor was beaten with bamboo sticks, fists and kicks “without any

provocation or lawful authority”. It also names one Nigamananda Dal Behera, described as a reporter of a local vernacular newspaper, among those present.

The complaint further alleges that around 11.30am the pastor was assaulted, forcibly smeared with sindoor, garlanded with footwear, paraded on the streets, beaten publicly, forced to drink drain water and compelled to bow before a temple against his will.

Bandana Naik wrote in the FIR that the accused and the village president alleged that her husband was attempting to convert people, which she termed “entirely baseless and fabricated”. She said her husband suffered “severe physical and mental torture”.

Police have registered a case under provisions related to unlawful assembly, rioting and causing hurt under sections 191(2), 191(3), 126(2), 115(2), 351(2) and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), officials said.

The Rashtriya Christian Morcha (RCM) condemned the incident. “This is not just a crime against an individual; it is a direct assault on the constitutional right to worship and the basic human dignity of a citizen,” said RCM general secretary Pallab Lima.

Political parties also reacted sharply. “The peace of the state has already been vitiated. No one is feeling secure at any moment. The state’s image has been dented,” BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said.

Congress leader Amiya Pandav alleged that assaults on minorities had increased after the BJP formed its first government in Odisha in 2024. He said Muslims and Christians were being turned into “soft targets” by self-styled Hindutva groups and accused the government of failing to protect minorities.

Several incidents have been cited by Opposition leaders in recent months, including an alleged assault on two tribal women in December 2024 on suspicion of conversion and a case in June 2025 in which a nun was allegedly forced off a train at Jatani, about 20km from Bhubaneswar. Other cases cited include assaults on Muslim youths and alleged harassment of street vendors in Puri over the sale of Santa hats.

Supreme Court seeks Delhi police response on Red Fort attack convict curative plea

23.01.26

The Supreme Court on Thursday sought a response from the Delhi police on a curative petition filed by Pakistani national and Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Mohd Arif alias Ashfaq challenging the death penalty handed to him for killing three army jawans at the Red Fort in 2000.

Arif’s two earlier review petitions and a curative petition had been dismissed by the top court. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath and Justice J.K. Maheshwari issued a notice to the respondent, Delhi police, seeking a reply within four weeks.

“Heard learned counsel for the petitioner. Issue notices returnable within four weeks,” the bench said in an order after hearing advocate-on-record A.S. Vairawan, representing Arif.

Arif has challenged his conviction on the ground of lack of adequate evidence and false implication. He has filed the curative petition, the last resort of a litigant before the highest court, as his earlier appeals had been dismissed.

On November 3, 2022, the Supreme Court upheld Arif’s death sentence, saying no challenge can be countenanced to the unity, integrity and sovereignty of India and there were no “mitigating circumstances” to warrant a review.

People in Gaza dig through garbage for things to burn to keep warm

January 22, 2026

CAIRO: Desperate Palestinians at a garbage dump in a Gaza neighborhood dug with their bare hands for plastic items to burn to keep warm in the cold and damp winter in the enclave, battered by two years of the Israel-Hamas war.

The scene in the Muwasi area of Khan Younis starkly contrasted with the vision of the territory projected to the world.

In Gaza, months into the truce, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians still languish in displacement camps, sheltering in tents and war-ravaged buildings, unable to protect themselves from the temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius at night.

Despite the ceasefire, there are still recurring deadly strikes in Gaza. Israeli tank shelling on Thursday killed four Palestinians east of Gaza City, according to Mohamed Abu Selmiya, director of the Shifa Hospital, where the bodies were taken.

While aid flows into Gaza have significantly increased since the ceasefire, residents say fuel and firewood are in short supply.

Prices are exorbitant, and searching for firewood is dangerous.

For Sanaa Salah, who lives in a tent with her husband and six kids, starting a fire is a critical daily chore for cooking and staying warm.

Her family barely has enough clothes to keep them warm. She said the family cannot afford to buy firewood or gas, and that they are aware of the dangers of burning plastic but have no other choice.

“Life is very hard,” she said as her family members threw plastic and paper into a fire to keep it burning.

“We cannot even have a cup of tea.”

“This is our life,” she said. “We do not sleep at night from the cold.”

Firewood is just too expensive, said Aziz Akel.

His family has no income, and they can’t pay the 7 or 8 shekels (about $2.5) it would cost.

“My house is gone, and my kids were wounded,” he said.

His daughter, Lina Akel, said he leaves the family’s tent early each morning to look for plastic in the garbage to burn — “the basics of life.”

Kushner’s vision for rebuilding Gaza faces major obstacles

January 23, 2026

JERUSALEM: Modern cities with sleek high-rises, a pristine coastline that attracts tourists and a state-of-the-art port that jut into the Mediterranean. This is what Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and Middle East adviser, says Gaza could become, according to a presentation he gave at an economic forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In his 10-minute speech on Thursday, Kushner claimed it would be possible — if there’s security — to quickly rebuild Gaza’s cities, which are now in ruins after more than two years of war between Israel and Hamas.

“In the Middle East, they build cities like this ... in three years,” said Kushner, who helped broker the ceasefire in place since October. “And so stuff like this is very doable, if we make it happen.”

That timeline is at odds with what the United Nations and Palestinians expect will be a very long process to rehabilitate Gaza. Across the territory of roughly 2 million people, former apartment blocks are hills of rubble, unexploded ordnance lurks beneath the wreckage, disease spreads because of sewage-tainted water and city streets look like dirt canyons.

The United Nations Office for Project Services says Gaza has more than 60 million tons of rubble, enough to fill nearly 3,000 container ships. That will take over seven years to clear, they say, and then additional time is needed for demining.

Kushner spoke as Trump and an assortment of world leaders gathered to ratify the charter of the Board of Peace, the body that will oversee the ceasefire and reconstruction process.

Here are key takeaways from the presentation, and some questions raised by it:

Reconstruction hinges on security

Kushner said his reconstruction plan would only work if Gaza has “security” — a big “if.”

It remains uncertain whether Hamas will disarm, and Israeli troops fire upon Palestinians in Gaza on a near-daily basis.

Officials from the militant group say they have the right to resist Israeli occupation. But they have said they would consider “freezing” their weapons as part of a process to achieve Palestinian statehood.

Since the latest ceasefire took effect Oct. 10, Israeli troops have killed at least 470 Palestinians in Gaza, including young children and women, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. Israel says it has opened fire in response to violations of the ceasefire, but dozens of civilians have been among the dead.

In the face of these challenges, the Board of Peace has been working with Israel on “de-escalation,” Kushner said, and is turning its attention to the demilitarization of Hamas — a process that would be managed by the US-backed Palestinian committee overseeing Gaza.

It’s far from certain that Hamas will yield to the committee, which goes by the acronym NCAG and is envisioned eventually handing over control of Gaza to a reformed Palestinian Authority. Hamas says it will dissolve the government to make way, but has been vague about what will happen to its forces or weapons. Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007 from the Palestinian Authority.

Another factor that could complicate disarmament: the existence of competing armed groups in Gaza, which Kushner’s presentation said would either be dismantled or “integrated into NCAG.” During the war, Israel has supported armed groups and gangs of Palestinians in Gaza in what it says is a move to counter Hamas.

Without security, Kushner said, there would be no way to draw investors to Gaza and or stimulate job growth. The latest joint estimate from the UN, the European Union and the World Bank is that rebuilding Gaza will cost $70 billion.

Reconstruction would not begin in areas that are not fully disarmed, one of Kushner’s slides said.

Kushner’s plan avoids mention of what Palestinians do in meantime

When unveiling his plan for Gaza’s reconstruction, Kushner did not say how demining would be handled or where Gaza’s residents would live as their areas are being rebuilt. At the moment, most families are sheltering in a stretch of land that includes parts of Gaza City and most of Gaza’s coastline.

In Kushner’s vision of a future Gaza, there would be new roads and a new airport — the old one was destroyed by Israel more than 20 years ago — plus a new port, and an area along the coastline designated for “tourism” that is currently where most Palestinians live. The plan calls for eight “residential areas” interspersed with parks, agricultural land and sports facilities.

Also highlighted by Kushner were areas for “advanced manufacturing,” “data centers,” and an “industrial complex,” though it is not clear what industries they would support.

Kushner said construction would first focus on building “workforce housing” in Rafah, a southern city that was decimated during the war and is currently controlled by Israeli troops. He said rubble-clearing and demolition were already underway there.

Kushner did not address whether demining would occur. The United Nations says unexploded shells and missiles are everywhere in Gaza, posing a threat to people searching through rubble to find their relatives, belongings, and kindling.

Rights groups say rubble clearance and demining activities have not begun in earnest in the zone where most Palestinians live because Israel has prevented the entry of heavy machinery.

After Rafah will come the reconstruction of Gaza City, Kushner said, or “New Gaza,” as his slide calls it. The new city could be a place where people will “have great employment,” he said.

Will Israel ever agree to this?

Nomi Bar-Yaacov, an international lawyer and expert in conflict resolution, described the board’s initial concept for redeveloping Gaza as “totally unrealistic” and an indication Trump views it from a real estate developer’s perspective, not a peacemaker’s.

A project with so many high-rise buildings would never be acceptable to Israel because each would provide a clear view of its military bases near the border, said Bar-Yaacov, who is an associate fellow at the Geneva Center for Security Policy.

What’s more, Kushner’s presentation said the NCAG would eventually hand off oversight of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority after it makes reforms. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has adamantly opposed any proposal for postwar Gaza that involves the Palestinian Authority. And even in the West Bank, where it governs, the Palestinian Authority is widely unpopular because of corruption and perceived collaboration with Israel.

AFP demands ‘investigation after freelancer killed in Israeli strike

January 22, 2026

PARIS: Agence France-Presse has demanded a “full and transparent investigation” into the death of Abdul Raouf Shaat, a regular contributor to the agency in the Gaza Strip who was killed in an Israeli strike alongside two other Palestinian journalists.

“Far too many local journalists have been killed in Gaza over the past two years while foreign journalists remain unable to enter the territory freely,” the agency said in a statement.

It expressed “immense sadness” at the death of the 34-year-old photo and video journalist, who was “a regular contributor to AFP’s production for nearly two years” and “much loved by the AFP team covering Gaza.”

He was killed on Wednesday along with colleagues Anas Ghneim and Mohammed Salah Qashta in the central Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army said it had targeted the operators of a drone deemed suspicious, adding that the details of the incident were still under review.

Since Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023 sparked the war in Gaza, nearly 220 journalists have been killed by Israel, making the Palestinian territory by far the deadliest place for journalists, according to media watchdog Reporters Without Borders data.

Israeli forces demolish Palestinian facilities in Jericho

January 22, 2026

LONDON: Israeli authorities demolished a house on Thursday in the town of Deir Al-Dik, located west of Jericho in the West Bank, and issued a demolition order for another structure east of the city.

Israeli bulldozers stormed Deir Al-Dik and demolished a house belonging to a resident of Jerusalem, claiming it was built without a permit, according to the Wafa news agency.

Forces also demolished a barracks in the city that belonged to the Abu Jarar factory and issued a demolition order for another structure related to the Sinqrat palm grove, east of Jericho.

The Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission reported that the Israeli authorities conducted 538 demolitions in the past 12 months, totaling 1,400 structures. This included 304 occupied homes, 74 unoccupied homes, 270 economic facilities and 490 agricultural facilities, primarily in Hebron, Jerusalem, Ramallah, Tubas and Nablus.

Excluding East Jerusalem, which was occupied and annexed by Israel in 1967, there are about 3 million Palestinians and 500,000 Israeli settlers living in the West Bank.

Lebanese finance minister denies any plans for a Kushner-run economic zone in the south

TAREK ALI AHMAD

January 22, 2026

DAVOS: Lebanon’s finance minister dismissed any plans of turning Lebanon’s battered southern region into an economic zone, telling Arab News on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s meeting in Davos that the proposal had died “on the spot.”

Yassine Jaber explained that US Envoy to Lebanon Morgan Ortagus had proposed the idea last december for the region, which has faced daily airstrikes by Israel, and it was immediately dismissed.

Jaber’s comments, made to Arab News on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, were in response to reports which appeared in Lebanese media in December which suggested that parts of southern Lebanon would be turned into an economic zone, managed by a plan proposed by Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son in law.

Meanwhile, Jaber also dismissed information which had surfaced in Davos over the past two days of a bilateral meeting between Lebanese ministers, US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff and Kushner.

Jaber said that the meeting on Tuesday was a gathering of “all Arab ministers of finance and foreign affairs, where they (Witkoff and Kushner) came in for a small while, and explained to the audience the idea about deciding the board of peace for Gaza.”

He stressed that it did not develop beyond that.

When asked about attracting investment and boosting the economy, Jaber said: “The reality now is that we need to reach the situation where there is stability that will allow the Lebanese army, so the (Israeli) aggression has to stop.”

Over the past few years, Lebanon has witnessed one catastrophe after another: one of the world’s worst economic meltdowns, the largest non-nuclear explosion in its capital’s port, a paralyzed parliament and a war with Israel.

A formal mechanism was put in place between Lebanon and Israel to maintain a ceasefire and the plan to disarm Hezbollah in areas below the Litani river.

But, the minister said, Israel’s next step is not always so predictable.

“They’re actually putting pressure on the whole region. So, a lot of effort is being put on that issue,” he added.

“There are still attacks in the south of the country also, so stability is a top necessity that will really succeed in pushing the economy forward and making the reforms beneficial,” he said.

Lawmakers had also enacted reforms to overhaul the banking sector, curb the cash economy and abolish bank secrecy, alongside a bank resolution framework.

Jaber also stressed that the government had recently passed a “gap law” intended to help depositors recover funds and restore the banking system’s functionality.

“One of the priorities we have is really to deal with all the losses of the war, basically reconstruction … and we have started to get loans for reconstructing the destroyed infrastructure in the attacked areas.”

As Hezbollah was battered during the war, Lebanon had a political breakthrough as the army’s general, Joseph Aoun, was inaugurated as president. His chosen prime minister was the former president of the International Court of Justice, Nawaf Salam.

This year marks the first time a solid delegation from the country makes its way to Davos, with Salam being joined by Jaber, Economy and Trade Minister Amr Bisat, and Telecoms Minister Charles Al-Hage.

“Our priority is to really regain the role of the state in all aspects, and specifically in rebuilding the institutions,” Jaber said.

Gaza’s Rafah crossing with Egypt to open next week, Palestinian official says

January 22, 2026

DAVOS: Gaza’s border crossing with Egypt will reopen next week after largely being shut during the Israel-Hamas war, the Palestinian technocrat leader backed by Washington to administer the enclave announced on Thursday.

Ali Shaath made the announcement by video link during an event in Davos hosted by President Donald Trump, who convened a group of leaders to formally launch a “Board of Peace” initially focused on cementing Gaza’s ceasefire.

A key unfulfilled element of the ceasefire, brokered by Trump in October, has been the reopening of Gaza’s main gateway to the world to allow the entry and exit of Palestinians.

“I am pleased to announce the Rafah crossing will open next week in both directions. For Palestinians in Gaza, Rafah is more than a gate. It is a lifeline and symbol of opportunity,” Shaath said.

“Opening Rafah signals that Gaza is no longer closed to the future and to the war,” Shaath said.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has controlled the Rafah crossing since 2024.

The ceasefire deal left Israel in control of more than half of Gaza, including the area that abuts the border crossing. Hamas controls the remainder of the enclave.

Israeli settlers storm, sing, perform rites in Aqsa Mosque

22 Jan 2026

Dozens of Zionist settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Thursday morning, performing Talmudic rituals in its courtyards under the protection of Israeli police.

Sources in Quds reported that the settlers performed Talmudic rituals and chanted Hebrew songs in front of the Dome of the Rock during their incursion into the Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to Sanad News Agency.

The settlers' incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound continue, amidst a policy of emptying it of worshippers and those maintaining a vigil at the mosque through the issuance of dozens of deportation orders targeting Qudsis and Palestinians from within the occupied territories.

The Palestinian Information Center (PIC) reported that 8,000 settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the first twenty days of January 2026, averaging approximately 400 settlers per day. This figure represents a sharp increase of nearly 176% compared to the same period in January 2025, when approximately 2,903 settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the first 20 days of that year, reflecting an unprecedented escalation in the frequency of violations against the sanctity of the mosque.

KSrelief’s 2026 aid plan will support 12 million people worldwide

BASMAH ALBASRAWI

January 22, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi aid agency KSrelief launched its 2026 plan for humanitarian and relief operations in a ceremony on Wednesday that also honored its major donors and partners.

Advisor to the Royal Court and Supervisor General of KSrelief, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, highlighted the Kingdom’s efforts to deliver humanitarian relief on a global scale and thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their support.

The results could be seen in the UN Financial Tracking Service rankings, he said, where the Kingdom is placed second globally and first in the Arab world among donor countries providing humanitarian aid in 2025.

Outlining the organization’s plans for 2026, Al-Rabeeah said the first goal was based on the operational and human projects plan, which includes 113 projects across 44 countries in partnership with 11 Saudi non-profit organizations. This is set to benefit over 12 million people at a cost of SR400 million.

He also launched the 2026 volunteer programs plan, which includes 309 programs in 42 countries at a cost of SR200 million.

The ceremony also marked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ 2026 gift of dates, targeting more than 13 million beneficiaries in 73 countries, with a total weight of 17,868 tons and a cost of SR123 million.

It concluded with the signing of Memorandums of Understanding with local associations to strengthen cooperation in humanitarian, relief and development efforts, enhance sustainability, and improve the efficiency of aid delivery to vulnerable communities worldwide.

Among the guests were representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, several embassies and businesses.

Saudi Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Elkhereiji emphasized the Kingdom’s global position on humanitarian matters, saying: “The Kingdom is constantly working to stand for those in need. The Kingdom’s direction is based on the importance of finding fundamental solutions to humanitarian crises, particularly in light of the escalation of humanitarian crises in recent years.”

He highlighted the Kingdom’s commitment to finding solutions, saying Saudi aid has exceeded SR537 billion to 173 countries; in 2025, the country’s aid efforts exceeded $2 billion.

Djibouti ambassador Dya-Eddine Said Bamakhrama also took to the stage to applaud the center’s contributions around the world.

‘Stability can’t be bought’: Saudi ministers extol benefits of long-term reform in a fragmented world

DANIEL FOUNTAIN

January 22, 2026

DAVOS: Stability is the crucial ingredient for long-term economic growth, especially in an increasingly fragmented global economy, Saudi ministers said on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

It is not something that can be purchased or improvised, said Faisal Alibrahim, the minister of economy and planning, it must be developed patiently.

“You have to build it, accumulate it over time, for it to be the right kind of stability,” he said. “We treat it as a discipline,” he added.

Speaking during a panel discussion on the Saudi economy, Alibrahim and Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan outlined the ways in which the Kingdom has sought to capitalize on stability as a competitive advantage.

They highlighted in particular the use of predictable policymaking, disciplined public finances, and long-term planning under the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan for national development and diversification.

Al-Jadaan said governments and businesses alike are operating in a world where uncertainty has become the norm, which places a greater burden on policymakers to reduce ambiguity wherever possible.

“Businesses can price tariffs, they can price taxes,” he said. “What they find very difficult to price is ambiguity. We are trying to ensure that we build that resilience within our economy and give the private sector that predictability that they need.”

This focus on predictability, he added, has been central to Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation, by helping the private sector to plan for the long term while the government undertakes deep structural reform.

Alibrahim noted that trust has become a big factor in global trade and investment, particularly as geopolitical tensions and economic fragmentation intensify.

In a fragmenting world, one of the rarest things now is the idea that a “commitment made today will be honored tomorrow,” he said. Yet trust shapes how the world trades and how markets remain active, because it means participants can predict what will happen, he added. Stability therefore becomes a “rare currency, and even a competitive edge.”

He also said that reform on paper was not enough; it must be coupled with streamlined regulation and continuous engagement, so that businesses can develop long-term thinking and navigate uncertainty with more confidence.

Al-Jadaan framed Saudi Vision 2030 as a multiphase journey that began with structural reforms, followed by an execution-heavy phase, and is now entering a third stage focused on the maximization of impact.

He said the Kingdom was in a phase of “learning, reprioritizing and staying the course,” would make bold decisions, and had the “courage to continue through difficulties.” A key anchor of all this, he added, was discipline in relation to public finance.

“You cannot compromise public finance for the sake of growth,” Al-Jadaan said. “If you spend without restraint, you lose your anchor while the economy is still diversifying.”

This discipline underpins what he described as Saudi Arabia’s “deficit by design” — in other words, borrowing strategically to fund capital expenditure that supports long-term growth, rather than consumption.

“If you borrow to spend on growth-enhancing investment, you are safe,” he said. “If you borrow to consume today, you are leaving the burden to your children.”

Alibrahim said the focus in the next phase of Vision 2030 will be on the optimal deployment of capital, ensuring the momentum continues while costs are tightly managed.

Looking ahead, both ministers emphasized the importance of long-term planning, which can be a challenge for some countries constrained by short election cycles.

“If you cannot take a long-term view in a turbulent world, it becomes very difficult,” Al-Jadaan said.

“Success stories like Singapore, South Korea and China were built on decades-long plans, pursued through good times and bad.”

The ministers’ discussion points were echoed by international participants. Noubar Afeyan, founder and CEO of life sciences venture capital firm Flagship Pioneering, said that by utilizing technology, including artificial intelligence, alongside a strategic vision in the form of Vision 2030, the Kingdom had been able to turn vulnerabilities into strengths, becoming not only self-sufficient but a potential exporter of innovation and intellectual property.

“Uncertainty opens up opportunities for countries that might otherwise be overlooked,” he added.

“Saudi Arabia, with Vision 2030, is positioning itself to not only address its own challenges but also become a net exporter of innovation and expertise.”

Ajay Banga, the president of the World Bank, said Vision 2030 had helped create “physical and human infrastructure” that allows Saudi Arabia to capitalize on its demographic dividend.

Jennifer Johnson, CEO of investment management firm Franklin Templeton, said Saudi policymakers stood out for their openness and curiosity.

“I have spoken to Saudi ministers and they ask what they need to do — that doesn’t happen often,” she said.

Masam destroys 5,700 mines, ammunition in Mukalla

January 22, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Masam Project for landmine clearance in Yemen destroyed 5,754 mines, unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices on Thursday morning in Mukalla.

The operation was part of the project’s efforts to protect civilians and clear civilian lands and infrastructure, a press release said.

The destroyed materials included 5,500 rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition, five air-to-surface missiles, 10 guided missiles, four anti-tank mines, 20 anti-personnel mines, 37 mm shells (50), 23 mm shells (120), 12 hand grenades, and 82 mm mortar rounds (33).

Masam’s director general, Osama bin Yousef Al-Qusaibi, said that the operation, conducted in cooperation with the National Mine Action Program and the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center in Mukalla, “was successfully carried out in a safe area far from populated areas and agricultural lands.”

He added that the team adhered to international standards for destruction operations, despite the challenges on the ground.

Al-Qusaibi highlighted that the teams’ work continues throughout the year, given the importance of protecting the lives of innocent civilians.

It aims to rid Yemen of all mines to help ensure the highest standards of safety and security for the Yemeni people.

Nitaqat Al-Mutawar Program employs 550,000 Saudis in first phase, ministry says

RASHID HASSAN

January 22, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Nitaqat Al-Mutawar Program, which aims to stimulate the private sector to localize jobs, has helped in employing more than 550,000 Saudis over three years since its launch, surpassing the first-phase target of 340,000 jobs introduced in 2022, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development.

Taking to its official account on X, the ministry said the results helped reduce unemployment rates and enhance Saudi workforce participation in the private sector.

The ministry launched the second phase of the program on Thursday, running for the next three years, to further localize more than 340,000 additional jobs for Saudis in the private sector.

Describing it as a very encouraging and welcome result, Dr. Osama Ghanem Al-Obaidy, adviser and professor of law at the Institute of Public Administration, Riyadh, told Arab News: “This remarkable increase in the number of Saudis employed is a result of the Saudi government’s efforts to increase the rate of employment in terms of Saudi human capital benefiting from this pioneer program.

“The government is committed to reducing unemployment among Saudis in accordance with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030,” he added.

Notably, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Ahmed bin Sulaiman Al-Rajhi said in December that the number of Saudis working in the private sector reached 2.5 million employees.

The Nitaqat Al-Mutawar program offers advantages, represented by a phase-wise transparent localization plan for a period of three years, in order to raise organizational stability in the private sector, providing clear Saudization rate expectations to give businesses time for strategic workforce planning, fostering regulatory stability and supporting the national workforce.

Muslim group slams vile 'leave Scotland' graffiti at Edinburgh's Central Mosque

Stephen Bark

22 Jan 2026

A Muslim support group has slammed vile "Get out of Scotland" graffiti sprayed across Edinburgh's Central Mosque. Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND) has called for an end to extremist far-right content and misinformation after vandals targeted the mosque, dousing the building in red paint to write out the slur.

Police were called to the mosque in the Potterrow area of the city at around 9.30pm on Friday, January 16. Thugs also sprayed "Leave Scot" on the building in an act which was branded "sickening" by locals.

MEND, which supports Muslim's across the UK, said incidents of this type are 'no longer a surprise' but that they still "create a chilling effect", reports The Daily Record.

In response to the incident in Edinburgh, the group has reiterated calls for action to "nurture and protect young minds from falling into the trap of racial and religious hatred".

A spokesperson said: "Attacks on mosques - whether graffiti, damage, or threats - create a chilling effect well beyond the immediate incident. However, such incidents no longer surprise us. The attack on Edinburgh Central Mosque is sadly one of many attacks in recent months.

"Just this time last year, a radicalised teen was charged with terror offences after being caught preparing a mass-murder attack on a mosque in Greenock. Extreme far-right content is spreading like wildfire across online spaces, and little is being done to stop it, the result is evident.

"We must ask ourselves - who profits from dividing our society? Who wins when hard-working people are turned against each other?

"The lies and deceit are clearly engineered to distract us from the real issues of the day.

"The Scottish Government must take clear steps forward, working alongside public institutions to prevent the spread of extremist far-right content and misinformation. Early intervention is crucial if we are to nurture and protect young minds from falling into the trap of racial and religious hatred."

The right-wing teenager who wanted to carry out and livestream a mass murder at a mosque in Inverclyde was locked up for 10 years last August.

The 17-year-old boy, who we cannot name for legal reasons, had been "radicalised" by what he had viewed on social media channels - including TikTok - going on to idolise killers such as neo-Nazi murderer Anders Brevik who slaughtered 77 people in Norway in 2011.

The youngster spoke online about how white people were at "war" and that he would "die for my land." The boy planned the attack at the Inverclyde Muslim Centre, which included duping the Imam into believing that he wanted to join.

Having been trusted enough to be left alone at times, he made sketches and videos of the layout.

The teen also went as far as to join in with prayers in a bid to convince others of his bid to convert to being a Muslim.

But his plans were halted when police discovered the boy armed and potentially dangerous outside the centre.

This included an airgun which he claimed would keep worshippers inside once he had set the building on fire.

The teen later plead guilty to acting with the intention of committing acts of terrorism.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 12.25pm on Saturday, January 17, we received a report of vandalism to a building in the Potterrow area of Edinburgh.

"It's believed the incident happened around 9.30pm on Friday, January 16.

"Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances."

Regional NSW principal to stand aside amid antisemitism investigation

January 23, 2026

The principal of an Islamic school in regional NSW will stand aside amid an investigation into accusations of antisemitism.

The New Madinah College in Young and its principal, Sheikh Abdulghani Albaf, have been the subject of a federal and state government investigation over the past year relating to alleged antisemitic comments made on social media.

According to its website, the New Madinah College is an Islamic school where students learn about the Koran, the Arabic language and Islamic values and principles, as well as core curricular subjects from kindergarten to year 10.

The NSW Education Authority (NESA) last month issued a "show cause" notice to the chair of the New Madinah College's board about the conduct of the school's principal.

On Friday, a NESA spokesperson said the initial response provided by the school did "not satisfactorily" address compliance concerns raised by the authority.

"The principal will now stand aside while the investigation into his conduct is completed," the spokesperson said.

In order to operate, all NSW schools must meet school registration requirements and when compliance concerns are raised, schools need to satisfactorily show NESA those issues have been addressed.

When the matter concerns a responsible person, the process may include removing the individual from their position and dealing with any related compliance issues.

If a school does not address compliance concerns, it runs the risk of being deregistered.

Investigation begins

In January 2025, a government investigation was launched into comments about Zionism which attracted accusations of antisemitism made over several years from an account bearing the name of Sheikh Abdulghani Albaf.

NESA began monitoring the school's implementation of policies and procedures soon after the investigation was launched and inspected the school in the middle of the year.

Last month, NSW Acting Education Minister Courtney Houssos revealed she had directed NESA to review and strengthen the fit and proper person requirements for principals.

"This will ensure that unacceptable conduct does not go unchecked," she said.

"We will not hesitate to take action against antisemitism in all its forms."

As it continues with its investigation, NESA's registration committee will consider the school's submissions before making a determination in February over the fit and proper assessment of the principal.

In the meantime, the NESA spokesperson said the safety and wellbeing of students was its "highest priority".

President Volodymyr Zelensky says trilateral talks on ending the war in Ukraine are to take place with Russia and the US in the United Arab Emirates, after he met President Donald Trump in Davos.

As the diplomatic pace appeared to intensify, Trump said his meeting with Zelensky was good, and US envoy Steve Witkoff headed to Moscow for talks with Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Witkoff, who was travelling to Moscow with Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, said he was optimistic about a deal.

"I think we've got it down to one issue and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it's solvable," he said before leaving the Swiss resort.

Trump's envoy gave no details about the remaining sticking point, but Zelensky later clarified that the future status of eastern Ukraine remained the unsolved issue.

He made clear that the planned talks in the Emirates would involve Russia as well as the US and Ukraine, adding that "the Russians have to be ready for compromises, not only Ukraine".

"It's all about the land. This is the issue which is not solved yet," Zelensky told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland - adding that trilateral talks might provide the two sides with "variants".

The US proposal for Ukraine's industrial heartland in Donbas is for a demilitarised and free economic zone in exchange for security guarantees for Kyiv.

"If both sides want to solve this, we're going to get it solved," Witkoff said, explaining that he would be heading to Abu Dhabi after Moscow, where working groups would be covering military issues as well as economic prosperity.

Zelensky also told reporters that he had reached an agreement with Trump on future US security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a deal. He gave no details but said it would need to go before the US Congress and Ukrainian parliament before signing.

Although he said the "Coalition of the Willing", led by the UK and France, had committed forces on the ground to monitor the deal, he was adamant a Trump backstop would be necessary too: "No security guarantees work without the US."

Earlier he used his Davos speech to criticise his European allies for a lack of "political will" to take action against Russia.

"There are endless internal arguments and things left unsaid that stop Europe from uniting and speaking honestly enough to find real solutions," he said, drawing a contrast with the US under Trump.

"President Trump loves who he is, and he says he loves Europe, but he will not listen to this kind of Europe," he said.

The Ukrainian president had travelled through the night to get to Davos.

He had initially called off his trip to deal with the aftermath of Russian strikes on Kyiv's power infrastructure, which have left large areas of the capital without heating, water or power during the harshest winter so far in almost four years of Russia's full-scale war. Thousands of apartment blocks remain without heating.

Zelensky said last month that a 20-point US plan to end the war was 90% ready and that Ukraine's position on Donbas, in eastern Ukraine, was different to Russia's.

As part of the US 20-point plan, Zelensky has offered to withdraw troops by up to 40km (25 miles) from the 25% of the Donetsk region that Ukraine still controls in order to create an economic zone in Donbas, if Russia does the same.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that discussions with the American envoys would continue "on the Ukrainian issue and other related topics" and refused to say whether he shared Witkoff's optimism on achieving a deal.

Putin is known to covet control of the entire region, and Russian forces have advanced slowly in the east in the past year.

Another big sticking point that Zelensky highlighted last month was future control of Ukraine's enormous Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, seized by Russia in March 2022.

Zelensky joked that he hoped the Emirates knew about the planned meeting, but in a measure of the seriousness of the talks he named some his most senior officials in the Ukrainian team taking part.

The head of the country's national security and defence council, Rustem Umerov, was already talking to US officials in Davos, along with Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Zelensky's office, and negotiator David Arakhamia. They will be joined the chief of the general staff, Andrii Hnatov.

Clonskeagh mosque to reopen next month after nine months of closure

22 Jan 2026

The Clonskeagh mosque will reopen next month, following nine months of closure.

It was closed in April last year after concerns were raised regarding the safety of people and property.

It followed fractious scenes that occurred outside the centre while a meeting was underway.

In the months that followed, there were alleged internal conflicts, financial issues, and a dispute over the appointment of new directors. Legal cases also took place.

Despite the closure of the mosque, the centre's school, restaurant and shop continued to operate.

The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland will reopen in February. Ramadan begins on 17 February, an important time in the Muslim calendar.

Many members of the Muslim community in Dublin, particularly those living on the southside of the city, were unable to access the mosque for daily and Friday prayers.

Speaking to RTÉ News, Dr Ali Selim, who was the media manager up to the closure of the centre last April, acknowledged that it had been a difficult time for the community.

This evening, he thanked the members for "remaining steadfast and united" during this difficult period.

He also expressed sincere gratitude to the Islamic Cultural Foundation of Ireland for its continuous support to the community.

The Al Maktoum Foundation, which is based in Dubai, provided the funds to purchase land, construct the ICCI complex (opened 1996), and has supported its ongoing operation and services.

The foundation sent auditors to the centre who raised concerns about alleged financial and governance irregularities.

It is understood that there will be significant administrative changes at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland in the coming weeks.

Plans for 8,500-plot Muslim cemetery withdrawn

Shariqua Ahmed

January 23, 2026

Plans to convert farmland into an 8,500-plot Muslim cemetery in Cambridgeshire have been withdrawn following criticism that the project was oversized and unsuitable.

The Green Meadows charity wanted to develop the site in Sutton, near Peterborough, incorporating a prayer hall, landscaped grounds, and areas for quiet reflection.

Local parish councils objected to the proposals, raising concerns about traffic impact and loss of farmland.

Peterborough City Council planning officers recommended that councillors refuse the project at a committee meeting on Tuesday, but the application has been withdrawn.

Tokeer Tufail, of Green Meadows, said the "calm and reflective space" would be open to the public, and said there was a "desperate need" for Muslim burial provision in the region.

This was echoed by the National Burial Council, which represents Muslim bereavement services.

In a joint statement, 21 local imams said: "[It] helps to preserve cultural identity and strengthens sense of community."

A decision on the proposal was already delayed in October, after Green Meadows provided extra detail about how many people could be buried there.

Ailsworth Parish Council said the scale of the development was "disproportionate to local burial needs" and "incongruent with the area's rural character".

Sutton and Castor parish councils also objected.

In October, Peterborough First councillor Gavin Elsey, who represents nearby Wittering, pointed out that an 8,000-plot burial ground was due to be built in Great Haddon near Yaxley.

Although the council pointed out this likely would not open until 2032.

The Green Meadows application drew more than 600 responses from residents and community groups, with about 450 in support and approximately 230 objections.

The BBC has asked the charity why it withdrew its application.

France seizes suspected Russian 'shadow fleet' tanker

23 Jan 2026

Jessica Rawnsley

France says it has seized an oil tanker in the Mediterranean suspected of being part of Russia's sanction-busting "shadow fleet".

French President Emmanuel Macron said the tanker, named the Grinch, was "subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag".

The French navy, with the assistance of allies including the UK, boarded the vessel on Thursday morning between Spain and Morocco. French maritime authorities said that a search of the vessel had "confirmed the doubts as to the regularity of the flag".

Russia's embassy in Paris said it had not been informed of the seizure.

Moscow's so-called shadow fleet is a clandestine network of tankers used to evade Western sanctions on Russian oil exports by shipping the oil on aged tankers with obscure ownership or insurance.

The Grinch was travelling from the Arctic port of Murmansk in northern Russia when it was intercepted, French authorities said. The vessel had been flying a Comoros flag, according to ship tracking websites marinetraffic and vesselfinder.

Announcing the seizure on X, Macron said: "We are determined to uphold international law and to ensure the effective enforcement of sanctions.

"The activities of the "shadow fleet" contribute to financing the war of aggression against Ukraine," he said, adding that the vessel had been "diverted".

Defence Secretary John Healy said the UK navy had provided "tracking and monitoring" support, with HMS Dagger monitoring the tanker through the Straits of Gibraltar.

He added: "Alongside our allies, we are stepping up our response to shadow vessels to choke off the funds that fuel Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine."

The UK has imposed sanctions on 544 Russian shadow fleet vessels.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the action, saying it was "exactly the kind of resolve needed to ensure that Russian oil no longer finances Russia's war".

"Vessels must be apprehended. And wouldn't it be fair to confiscate and sell the oil carried by these tankers?" he said on X.

Speaking at Davos earlier, Zelensky exhorted Europe to do more to ensure its own security, saying: "Europe loves to discuss the future but avoids taking action".

Many Western countries imposed sanctions on Russian energy following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Earlier in January, British armed forces supported a US operation to seize a Russian-flagged tanker in the Atlantic that US officials said had broken sanctions by carrying oil for Venezuela and Russia.

Moscow denounced the move, saying no state had the right to use force against vessels properly registered in other states' jurisdictions.

Last October, France seized another sanctioned tanker, the Boracay, off its west coast before releasing it a few days later.

Shadow fleets are becoming increasingly common, with Venezuela, Iran and Russia all accused of using them to avoid sanctions on oil.

Financial intelligence firm S&P Global estimates that one in five oil tankers worldwide are used to smuggle oil from sanctioned countries.

Danish PM thanks Starmer for support over Greenland

23 Jan 2026

Jennifer McKiernan

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has thanked Sir Keir Starmer for his "strong support" over US President Donald Trump's threats to annex Greenland, as the pair met in the UK.

Frederiksen said it was important to know "Europeans stand together" and "don't get divided" during what she described as "a difficult time for us".

Trump caused jitters across the western world when he ramped up calls for the US to take control of Greenland, a Danish territory in the Arctic.

But the US president has now abandoned talk of a trade war after meeting Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte at Davos, saying the pair had come to an agreement over a potential deal on Arctic security.

Sir Keir welcomed Trump dropping his threat to impose 10% import taxes on eight countries, including the UK.

"Now we can start hard yards and finding a way forward on security in the Arctic," said the prime minister.

Speaking on a visit to Hertfordshire on Thursday, Sir Keir said "it is a good thing" that on Wednesday "the threat of tariffs against the United Kingdom was lifted".

"Now we can start hard yards and finding a way forward on security in the Arctic, which may seem a long way away, pretty remote, but actually it does matter to all of us in terms of the safety and security of our country," he said.

"And we've got through the last few days with a mix of British pragmatism, common sense, but also that British sense of sticking to our values and our principles.

"But now, as I say, the hard yards of actually finding a better way for security for our country, for Europe and across the globe."

As she met Sir Keir at the British prime minister's grace-and-favour country estate Chequers, Frederiksen praised the "British way" of doing diplomacy.

"You are very pragmatic," Frederiksen said. "You have a cup of tea and then you think a bit about everything. You get the facts on the table, and then you find a way forward, and that's exactly what we're doing now."

Echoing lyrics from a Beatles song, the Danish prime minister said: "So just to finalise, I think we've got to get by with a little help from our friends, also in this situation."

Downing Street says "serious behind-the-scenes diplomacy" has resulted in President Trump withdrawing his threat of sanctions on Nato members over Greenland.

The prime minister's official spokesperson said the UK had been in "constant communication" with the US administration and had been working closely with the Nato secretary general.

No 10 said there was now an agreement to draw up a new framework on Nato's role in bolstering Arctic Security.

The potential deal was reached when Trump met Rutte on the fringes of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where the US president suggested the framework could involve mineral rights.

Details are currently sparse, but Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told BBC Radio 4's Today programme she was "not aware of any discussions at all" on Greenland's vast - and largely untapped - reserves of rare earth minerals, many of which are crucial for technologies including mobile phones and electric vehicles.

Instead, she said the agreement was around an "Arctic sentry" allowing Nato countries to work together on a "shared threat" with "different Arctic countries coming together, supported by other Nato countries".

Cooper said the climbdown was due to the UK's "determined diplomacy" and "a very co-ordinated approach across allies".

This was despite a volley of social media posts by Trump aimed at the UK, including one where he branded the agreement to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands an "act of great stupidity", despite having previously welcomed the deal as a "monumental achievement".

Those plans give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while leasing back a key UK-US military base, following legal advice that otherwise the UK riosked losing the asset entirely.

The prime minister came under fire at PMQs on Wednesday for his focus on a calm response to such threats rather than ramping up rhetoric around retaliation, with Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey insisting the UK must stand up to "bullies".

Sir Keir responded by making his most open statement of opposition to the US president yet, telling MPs that he would "not yield" in his stance over Greenland and vowed to stand up for British principles.

Trump changing his stance on the UK's Chagos Islands deal was done with "the express purpose of putting pressure on me and Britain" over the Government's position on Greenland, Sir Keir told the Commons.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch backed the PM's stance on Greenland but criticised him for "giving away territory we own and paying £35bn for the privilege," adding that the money should instead go towards the armed forces.

Asked about the Chagos deal, Cooper said the figure was wrong and actually equated to "0.2% of the defence budget", adding opposition leaders were "swallowing some of the propaganda" and undermining the national interest.

She added that Trump used the Chagos deal as a way of putting pressure on the UK over Greenland in recent days, calling it shameful that the Conservatives "jumped on that bandwagon".

Ex-intelligence officer accused of betraying Austria in Russia spying trial

23 Jan 2026

Bethany Bell

Former intelligence official Egisto Ott has gone on trial in Vienna, accused of spying for Russia in what is being dubbed Austria's biggest spy trial in years.

Egisto Ott, who told the court on Thursday that he was not guilty, is charged with having handed over information to Russian intelligence officers and to Jan Marsalek, the fugitive executive of collapsed German payments firm Wirecard.

The prosecutor told the court that Ott, 63, was "not romantic about Russia" but had acted out of financial motives and frustration with his career. "Simply put, this was betraying the country." he said.

Ott's lawyer, Anna Mair, rejected the allegations.

"Don't you think that if he had really been spying for Russia, he would have covered his tracks?" she asked.

The prosecutor argued that people like Ott were "very susceptible" to working for the Russians, saying: "They are frustrated in their careers and urgently need money."

Ott had done "excellent" work for the Russian secret service", the prosecution added.

The former intelligence official had been broke since 2013 at the latest, the court heard: "The Russian secret service pays very well."

He is alleged to have "abused his authority" as an Austrian intelligence official by collecting large amounts of personal data, such as locations, vehicle registration numbers, or travel movements.

Prosecutors say he did this between 2015 and 2020 without authorisation, often using national and international police databases.

They also accuse him of supporting "a secret intelligence service of the Russian Federation to the detriment of the Republic of Austria" by collecting secret facts and a large amount of personal data from police databases between 2017 and 2021.

The spy scandal has revived fears that Austria remains a hotbed of Russian espionage activity and observers will also be watching closely for details that could emerge about Jan Marsalek.

Marsalek, who is also an Austrian citizen, is wanted by German police for alleged fraud and is currently believed to be in Moscow, having fled via Austria in 2020.

The subject of an Interpol Red Notice, he is alleged to be an intelligence asset for the FSB, Russia's secretive security service.

Prosecutors allege that Egisto Ott handed information to Marsalek and unknown representatives of the Russian intelligence service, and received payment in return.

In 2022, they say, Marsalek commissioned him to obtain a laptop containing secret electronic security hardware used by EU states for secure electronic communication. The laptop, they say, was handed over to the Russian intelligence service.

Egisto Ott is also suspected, reports say, of having passed phone data from senior Austrian interior ministry officials to Russia.

Austria's Standard newspaper says Egisto Ott apparently obtained the work phones after they accidentally fell into the River Danube on an interior ministry boating trip.

He is alleged to have copied their contents and passed them on to Jan Marsalek, and Moscow.

Egisto Ott is charged with abuse of authority and corruption and espionage against Austria and faces up to five years in prison, if he is found guilty.

When he was arrested in 2024, Austria's then Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, described the case as "a threat to democracy and our country's national security".

In a separate development, prosecutors in the Austrian town of Wiener Neustadt have told the BBC that a former MP, Thomas Schellenbacher, has been charged with helping Marsalek to escape following the collapse of the Wirecard company in 2020, when it emerged that €1.9bn (£1.7bn) was missing from its accounts.

Schellenbacher is alleged to have helped Jan Marsalek fly to Belarus, from Bad Vöslau in Austria, in June 2020.

Schellenbacher was an MP for the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), which has been accused by Austria's Green Party, now in opposition, of enabling Russian espionage, of acting as "an extension of Russia's arm" in Austria.

The FPÖ and its leader Herbert Kickl have denied the allegations - and have not faced any legal action in connection with any of them.

Marsalek, who was the Wirecard's Chief Operating Officer, has since been charged with fraud and embezzlement, suspected of having inflated company's balance sheet total and sales volume.

He is also believed to have been the controller of a group of Bulgarians who were convicted in London in 2025, of spying for Russia.

Messages from that trial reveal Marsalek has had plastic surgery to alter his appearance as well as details of his life as a fugitive.

"I'm off to bed. Had another cosmetic surgery, trying to look differently, and I am dead tired and my head hurts," he wrote to one of the Bulgarians, Roussev, on Telegram in February 2022.

In another, dated 11 May 2021, Roussev congratulated Marsalek for learning Russian.

"Well I am trying to improve my skills on a few fronts. Languages is one of them," the Austrian responded.

"In my new role as an international fugitive I must outperform James Bond."

Zelensky ‘a man in a desperate position’ – Orban

22 Jan, 2026

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has derided Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky as a “man in a desperate position,” after Zelensky said that Orban “deserves a smack upside the head.”

Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos on Thursday, Zelensky accused Orban – a staunch opponent of the EU’s sanctions on Russia who believes that the bloc’s economy is doomed without Russian oil and gas – of “selling out European interests.”

“The forces trying to destroy Europe…operate freely, even, even operate inside Europe,” he said. “Every Viktor who lives off European money while trying to sell out European interests deserves a smack upside the head.”

Orban issued a response on X. “It seems to me that we will not be able to come to an understanding,” he addressed Zelensky. “I am a free man who serves the Hungarian people.”

“You are a man in a desperate position who, for the fourth year now, has been unable or unwilling to bring a war to an end – despite the fact that the President of the United States has provided every possible assistance to do so.”

“Therefore, no matter how much you flatter me, we cannot support your war efforts,” he continued. After explaining that Hungary would continue to sell electricity and fuel to Ukraine, he concluded: “Life itself will settle the rest, and everyone will get what they deserve.”

Zelensky used his time in Davos to push for more financial and military aid from the EU. Evidently displeased with the flow of aid thus far, he described Europe as a “fragmented kaleidoscope of small and middle powers,” before urging them to take harsher measures against Russia, including seizing Russian oil and selling it to buy weapons.

Earlier on Thursday, Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump. He said afterwards that an agreement on post-conflict security guarantees from the US was “done,” but no documents were signed and Trump did not comment on the matter.

Zelensky also told reporters that the issue of territorial concessions “is not solved yet,” meaning Kiev is no closer to a deal with Moscow. Zelensky still claims the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhe, which are primarily ethnic Russian and voted to join the Russian Federation in 2022. Crimea voted to reunify with Russia in 2014.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff left Davos on Thursday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Zelensky said that these talks will be followed by a meeting between US and Ukrainian officials, and then “the first trilateral meeting” in the UAE. Neither Washington nor Moscow has confirmed such a meeting.

Dozens of Arizona Civil Rights, Faith-Based Groups Stand in Solidarity with CAIR-AZ, Oppose Anti-Muslim Legislator’s Defamatory Resolution

January 22, 2026

The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Arizona), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a letter sent to Arizona legislators signed by dozens of local civil rights, advocacy and faith-based organizations who strongly oppose a defamatory resolution attacking CAIR-Arizona by anti-Muslim lawmaker Rep. John Gillette, who has previously referred to Muslims as “savages.”

Last year, CAIR-AZ joined some 30 statewide advocacy organizations in urging Republicans in the Arizona House of Representatives to take action against Gillette, who called for the execution of a Democratic congresswoman because she urged people upset with administration policies to peacefully protest.

In a statement, CAIR-Arizona Executive Director Azza Abuseif said:

“CAIR-Arizona thanks all our colleagues, partners and neighbors who have taken a brave and principled stand against this hateful resolution introduced by a lawmaker who once referred to American Muslims as ‘savages.’ Arizonans who believe in the Constitution and justice stand united in opposition to attempts to smear organizations advocating for civil rights amid an unprecedented crackdown on our freedoms. Mr. Gillette should know that the people of Arizona will not stand for the unjust targeting of the Arizona Muslim community or other communities across our diverse state.”

Yesterday, a House committee voted along party lines to advance a symbolic resolution attacking CAIR-Arizona that was introduced by Rep. John Gillette, a legislator who has referred to Muslims as “savages.” CAIR-Arizona and its partners plan to continue opposing the resolution and other attempts to target Arizonans advocating for civil rights, free speech, immigrant rights, and justice for all amid an unprecedented erosion of constitutional rights nationwide.

In the letter sent to all members of the Arizona House of Representatives and Senate, 30 organizations representing diverse communities and causes said, in part:

“The undersigned organizations write in strong opposition to Arizona’s HCM 2002 and to H.R. 4097, which urge the designation of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a terrorist organization. This resolution is built on false claims, misleading narratives, and recycled allegations that have never been substantiated by facts or upheld by any court of law….

“Equally troubling is the harmful impact this resolution will have on Muslim communities in Arizona and across the country. Singling out a Muslim civil rights organization through unfounded allegations promotes fear, deepens division, and emboldens discrimination. It sends a dangerous message that Muslim institutions may be targeted without evidence or due process, chilling the civic participation of American Muslims and discouraging their engagement with the democratic institutions that should protect all residents equally.

“We support lawful and fact-based efforts to combat violence and extremism. However, policies rooted in misinformation and political targeting undermine those goals and damage public trust in government.

“We also note with concern that HCM 2002’s primary legislative sponsor has a documented record of anti-Muslim rhetoric, including public statements describing Muslims as “savages” and accusing Muslim immigrants of “subversion.” Such statements suggest this legislation is rooted not in legitimate security concerns, but in religious animus, precisely the kind of government action the First Amendment was designed to prohibit.

“For these reasons, we urge lawmakers to reject HCM 2002 and H.R. 4097, and instead uphold the constitutional principles of due process, equal protection, and religious freedom.”

‘Massive US military fleet moving towards Iran’: Donald Trump after Tehran says it has ‘finger on trigger’

Jan 23, 2026

US President Donald Trump has said that the United States has an “armada” headed toward Iran, renewing warnings to Tehran over the killing of protesters and the potential restart of its nuclear programme.

Trump’s comments came on Thursday as he returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and were part of an escalating standoff following internal unrest in Iran and tensions over its nuclear activities.

US warships, air defence headed to Middle East

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to news agency Reuters, said the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers are expected to arrive in the Middle East in the coming days.

Additional air-defense systems are also being considered to protect US forces and bases in the region, underscoring Washington’s bolstered military options.

“We have a lot of ships going that direction, just in case … I’d rather not see anything happen, but we’re watching them very closely,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

He reiterated that the deployment was intended to deter Iranian actions and that the US “might not have to use it.”

'We have an armada. We have a massive fleet heading in that direction. Maybe we won't have to use it. We'll see", Trump said.

Renewed nuclear warning to Iran

The US President also renewed warnings to Tehran against restarting its nuclear programme, saying the US would act again if Iran resumed enrichment activities.

"If they try to do it again, they have to go to another area. We'll hit them there too, just as easily," he said.

He also repeated his claim that Iran halted nearly 840 planned executions of protesters after his threats.

"I said: 'If you hang those people, you're going to be hit harder than you've ever been hit. It'll make what we did to your Iran nuclear (program) look like peanuts,'" Trump said.

Trump’s statement comes amid heightened tensions following a nationwide protest movement in Iran that erupted in late December over economic hardship and has been met with a severe crackdown, resulting in thousands of deaths, according to rights groups and Iranian sources.

Iran says ‘finger on the trigger’

Iran has responded firmly to rising US pressure. General Mohammad Pakpour, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), warned the United States and Israel against “miscalculations,” saying the Guards had their “finger on the trigger” and were prepared to carry out orders from the country’s supreme leader if threatened.

"The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and dear Iran have their finger on the trigger, more prepared than ever, ready to carry out the orders and measures of the supreme commander-in-chief," he said, as per news agency AFP.

Pakpour's remarks were made in a written statement that was cited by state television, commemorating Iran's national day dedicated to the Guards, whose role is to safeguard the Islamic revolution of 1979 from both internal and external dangers.

Another high-ranking military official, General Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi, who heads the Iranian joint command headquarters, cautioned that should the United States launch an attack, "all US interests, bases, and centers of influence" would be considered "legitimate targets" for Iran's military forces.

Protest toll disputed amid internet blackout

Iranian authorities on Wednesday released their first official death toll from the recent protests, saying 3,117 people were killed.

The figures were issued by Iran’s foundation for martyrs and veterans, which said 2,427 of those killed were “martyrs”, defined as members of the security forces or innocent bystanders, while others were described as US-backed “rioters”.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Thursday that protest is “the natural right of citizens”, but added that a distinction must be made between protesters and those “whose hands are stained with the blood of innocent people”, reported AFP.

Rights groups, however, dispute the official figures, saying the actual toll could be far higher. Iran Human Rights (IHR) said it has verified at least 3,428 killings so far, while the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has documented 4,902 deaths.

HRANA also said at least 26,541 people have been arrested.

Efforts to independently verify the scale of the crackdown have been hampered by a nationwide internet shutdown, which has now lasted more than two weeks, according to internet monitor Netblocks.

IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said evidence emerging from inside Iran suggests the real death toll is “far higher than the official figure”, calling the authorities’ numbers lacking in credibility, as per AFP.

Board of Peace: Donald Trump calls Putin’s idea of using frozen Russian assets ‘very interesting’

Jan 23, 2026

US President Donald Trump has reacted cautiously but positively to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion that he could use frozen Russian assets to pay for entry into Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace”.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Thursday, Trump said he was open to the idea if the funds were Putin’s own.

Asked whether he would allow Putin to use frozen Russian assets for the contribution, Trump said, “I don't know about that. I mean, I've heard that.” After the reporter clarified that the comment came from Putin himself, Trump responded, “Very interesting. But he said he's going to use his money. His money. I think that's fine.”

Trump added that Putin had indicated he would contribute $1 billion to join the Board of Peace.

“He's going to join the Board of Peace and he's going to make a contribution of a billion dollars by using his money. I mean, if he's using his money, that's great. I think it's important to have everybody,” Trump said.

Putin signals use of frozen assets

Earlier, Putin suggested that Russia could contribute $1 billion from Russian assets currently frozen in the United States to Trump’s Board of Peace.

He also said frozen funds could later be used to rebuild Ukrainian regions after a peace treaty is signed.

Putin said the proposal had been discussed with Washington and would be taken up during talks with Trump’s envoys in Moscow.

About Trump’s Board of Peace

Trump signed the charter of the Board of Peace at Davos on Thursday, with permanent membership likely requiring a $1 billion contribution.

The body was initially tasked to oversee peace efforts linked to Gaza but is not limited to the region, raising concerns that it could function as a parallel forum to the United Nations.

Around 35 world leaders have confirmed participation so far, with strong backing from several Middle Eastern countries, while key US allies such as France and the United Kingdom have expressed doubts and opted to stay away for now.

Why Texas Politicians Are Fighting To Keep ‘Islamic Games’ Out Of Schools

JAN 22, 2026

Texas GOP Senate candidates escalated pressure on the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District this week, publicly calling out the Houston-area district over its handling of a proposed youth sporting event known as the “Islamic Games,” which state leaders have alleged had ties to a group Texas has designated a terrorist organization.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Rep. Wesley Hunt, and Sen. John Cornyn have escalated criticism of Cy-Fair Independent School District following Gov. Greg Abbott’s demand that the district halt ties to the proposed Islamic Games, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

Paxton and Hunt, who are challenging Cornyn in the Republican Senate primary, said in statements to The Dallas Express that no Texas school should be involved with the event.

“Absolutely no school should be hosting ‘Islamic Games’ and associating itself with individuals with documented ties to Islamic extremists. It’s unconscionable for an educational institution in Texas to be hosting any event or having any partnership with the radical group CAIR, which is a designated terrorist organization,” Paxton said in an email to The Dallas Express. “I will continue to do everything in my power to stop the infiltration of radical Islamist terrorist groups, including continuing to aggressively defend the lawful declaration that CAIR is a foreign terrorist organization.”

In a separate statement texted to The Dallas Express, Hunt said the facts surrounding the proposed event remained unclear.

“As a combat veteran who served in the Middle East, I understand firsthand the threat posed by foreign terrorist organizations and the importance of ensuring they never gain a foothold in our country,” the congressman said. “At present, it remains unclear whether those involved in the proposed ‘Islamic Games’ have any affiliation with such organizations or whether all statutory prohibitions and safeguards have been fully satisfied. Clarifying that distinction is essential.”

Cornyn commented on a social media post dated January 20, the day before Abbott’s letter was made public:

Hunt followed with a formal letter to Cy-Fair ISD Superintendent Dr. Douglas Killian, dated January 21, requesting clarification about whether any facilities had been approved for the Islamic Games and what vetting procedures were used to ensure compliance with Texas Government Code § 2252.152, which restricts contracts with entities identified as foreign terrorist organizations.

Cy-Fair ISD’s press team did not immediately respond to the request for comment regarding Hunt’s letter.

Abbott’s January 21 letter to district leaders demanded termination of any negotiations tied to the event and ordered Cy-Fair ISD to preserve records related to the Islamic Games, warning that the Texas Education Agency could seize communications and refer findings to Paxton for legal action if the district did not comply. The governor cited his 2025 designation of CAIR as a foreign terrorist organization.

The Islamic Games organization and CAIR have disputed Abbott’s characterization.

Organizers have said CAIR-New Jersey was never a formal sponsor and that its only involvement was a one-time, in-kind donation of drawstring bags at a New Jersey event in 2023, before Abbott’s 2025 designation, according to Houston Public Media.

CAIR accused Abbott of targeting Muslim children for political purposes, saying in a social media post that “children should be off-limits in political games,” and calling the governor’s declaration “lawless” in a Facebook post on January 21.

A Cy-Fair ISD press release said district facilities were not “hosting” the Islamic Games and described the situation as a facilities-use matter governed by district policy that allows limited community use when it does not conflict with school operations. The presser said school officials had never contracted with CAIR-New Jersey and emphasized that public facilities must be made available without discrimination.

The event follows Grapevine-Colleyville ISD officials halting contract negotiations for a nationally organized “Islamic Games” event at Colleyville Heritage High School, The Dallas Express reported.

CAIR Echoes UN Experts Alarmed by Uyghur, Tibetan Forced Labor in China

January 22, 2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today echoed UN experts who expressed alarm regarding the Chinese government’s use of forced labor by Uyghurs, Tibetans and other minorities.

“There is a persistent pattern of alleged State-imposed forced labor involving ethnic minorities across multiple provinces in China,” UN experts said. “In many cases, the coercive elements are so severe that they may amount to forcible transfer and/or enslavement as a crime against humanity.” According to the experts, forced labor in China is enabled through the State-mandated “poverty alleviation through labor transfer” program, which coerces Uyghurs and members of other minority groups into jobs in Xinjiang and other regions. They are reportedly subjected to systematic monitoring, surveillance and exploitation, with no choice to refuse or change the work due to a pervasive fear of punishment and arbitrary detention. Xinjiang’s five-year plan (2021 to 2025) projects 13.75 million instances of labor transfers. The actual numbers have reached new heights.

In a statement, CAIR said:

“The Chinese Communist Party’s inhumane brutality is apparent to all. Forcing Uyghur Muslims, Tibetans and other minorities into forced labor is nothing short of a crime against humanity and must be condemned by all nations. We call on the Trump administration to make sure that no products produced through slave labor are allowed to be imported into our country.”

CAIR-CT Commends Avon BOE for Recognizing Eid-ul-Fitr as a District-Wide Holiday

January 22, 2026

The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today commended the Avon Board of Education for its recent decision to recognize Eid-ul-Fitr as an official district-wide holiday in its school district starting in 2027.

[NOTE: Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER), or “feast of fast-breaking,” is the first of the two major Muslim holidays after the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. Many communities hold multicultural bazaars and other family activities following the prayers. The second holiday, Eid ul-Adha (EED-al-ODD-ha), comes near the end of the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca.]

CAIR-CT said Avon’s landmark decision demonstrates the district’s dedication to diversity, inclusion, and religious accommodation, marking an important advancement in recognizing and honoring the needs of Muslim students and families within Connecticut’s public education system.

“We commend the Avon Board of Education for recognizing the importance of Eid-ul-Fitr and for their inclusive leadership,” said Farhan Memon, Chairman of CAIR-CT. “By establishing Eid as a district-wide holiday, the Board has affirmed its commitment to equity and belonging, helping ensure that Muslim students and families feel seen, valued, and fully included within the school community.”

He added that Eid-ul-Fitr holds great significance for Muslims around the world, marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan and a time of celebration, reflection, and community. The recognition of Eid-ul-Fitr as a holiday in the school calendar not only affirms the religious freedoms of Muslim students but also contributes to their overall well-being and sense of belonging.

[NOTE: CAIR-CT offers a booklet, called “Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices“, designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.]

“We strongly commend the Town of Avon for recognizing Eid-ul-Fitr as a school holiday – an important acknowledgment of the growing diversity and presence of Muslim students and families in Avon,” said Khamis Abu-Hasaballah, President of the Farmington Valley American Muslim Center. “We encourage other school districts throughout the Valley to follow Avon’s example by taking meaningful steps toward inclusion and honoring the religious observances of our students.”

Avon joins several other school districts in Connecticut which have added Eid-ul-Fitr to the school calendar in recent years including Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Trumbull, Fairfield, Milford, West Haven, Orange, New Haven, Hamden, Waterbury, New Britain, South Windsor, Glastonbury, and Manchester.

“Including Eid as a school holiday is a meaningful step toward strengthening cultural diversity and inclusion,” said Adam Annavi, a father and community organizer from Avon. “It allows Muslim students to observe their faith without compromising their education.”

CAIR-CT urges superintendents in districts that have not yet recognized Eid-ul-Fitr as a school holiday to begin meaningful discussions with their local Muslim communities. Muslim families in Cheshire, Stratford, North Haven, and Farmington are already actively engaging with their Boards of Education to advocate for this recognition. While some superintendents have not responded to CAIR-CT’s requests for meetings, several Boards of Education have taken positive steps by engaging in thoughtful conversations with community members about how recognizing Eid supports students’ mental health, overall well-being, and sense of belonging.

CAIR-CT recognizes the importance of religious accommodation in educational settings and remains committed to advocating for the rights of Muslim students and families across Connecticut.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Anti-ICE activists arrested over Minnesota ‘church riot’

22 Jan, 2026

The FBI and the US Department of Homeland Security have arrested three anti-ICE activists who invaded a Minnesota church and disrupted last week’s Sunday service.

Nekima Levy Armstrong, William Kelly, and Chauntyll Louisa Allen have been charged under the 1994 FACE Act, which protects worshipers from intimidation and physical obstruction at religious sites.

“Religious freedom is the bedrock of the United States – there is no First Amendment right to obstruct someone from practicing their religion,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X on Thursday.

On January 18, dozens of protesters entered Cities Church in St. Paul, chanting anti-ICE slogans. The activists alleged that one of the church’s pastors, David Easterwood, leads an ICE field office. Easterwood was previously named as a defendant in a lawsuit alleging abuse of power by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Attorney General Pam Bondi described the protest as a “coordinated attack” on a place of worship. The Department of Homeland Security said the activists took part in “church riots.”

Armstrong has denied any wrongdoing. “Why are people who are raising their voices on behalf of the vulnerable, on behalf of the poor, in the name of Jesus Christ, the ones being persecuted?” she told Democracy Now on Wednesday.

The incident took place amid heightened tensions in Minnesota following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent on January 7. The Department of Homeland Security alleged that Good attempted to ram agents with her car. Minnesota Democrats said the shooting was unjustified.

Peace Deals Fail As Bandits Storm Katsina Communities, Resume Attacks

January 23, 2026

Bandits have resumed attacks across many local government areas in Katsina State despite peace accords.

Residents have lamented the resurgence of killings and abductions in spite of the peace deal brokered between bandits and insecurity-prone communities in the state.

This development comes amidst plans by the state government to release 70 suspected and convicted bandits in exchange for about 1,000 victims earlier freed by bandits under the reportedly community-driven peace arrangement.

The bandits are launching fresh onslaughts on communities in Dandume, Kankara, Faskari, Jibia, Funtua, Malumfashi, Kurfi and Dutsin-ma Local Government Areas of the state despite the renewed relations between them and residents of the affected areas.

In Dandume, the bandits attacked Kirijan, Unguwar Jika, Baraje, Kauran Pawa and Shugu communities in the wee hours of Thursday, 22nd January, 2026, abducting eight persons, including women and children, and injuring 11 others.

At Kankara, the armed bandits recently attacked a wedding motorcade in Unguwar Nagunda community of the local government area and killed no fewer than two farmers.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, left the bride and many others with varying gunshot injuries, while an unspecified number of wedding guests were reportedly abducted by the attackers during the invasion.

A resident of the community, Ibrahim Hassan, told Punch that the assailants invaded the community, firing sporadically, which triggered panic among the residents.

He said, “They (bandits) killed two people and injured many others, including the bride and her friends, and abducted 10 wedding guests. This incident further heightened fears over persistent insecurity in the Kankara local government area.”

Findings further revealed that the armed bandits stormed Gidan Sarki community on Monday night, killing two residents and abducting 10 others.

A resident of the area, Muhammed Sarki, confirmed the incident, saying the victims included five married men and their wives.

“They abducted five men and their wives and took them into the forest. I tried calling my younger sister, who was among those kidnapped, but one of the bandits answered the phone and confirmed that she and her husband were in their custody,” he added.

Similarly, bandits also invaded Dikke village in Funtua Local Government Area on Saturday night, abducting five people.

A resident, Abubakar Mustapha, said one of the victims later escaped, leaving four people in captivity of the marauding hoodlums.

He noted that unlike previous attacks, the assailants did not ride motorcycles into the village.

“They parked their motorcycles inside the forest, trekked into the community and carried out the attack,” he added.

In a related development, the bandits attacked Unguwan Malam Musa community and a neighbouring village, Nadankama, both in Faskari Local Government Area of the state, where they kidnapped six residents.

A resident of the area, Babangida Abdulsalam, said four people were kidnapped at Unguwan Malam Musa, while two others were abducted at Nadankama village during the separate but coordinated attacks.

According to him, the victims were working on their farmlands when the bandits swooped on them and whisked them away to an unknown destination.

He disclosed that the kidnappers later contacted members of the affected communities and initially demanded a ransom of 14 million for each of the abducted persons.

“The bandits later reduced the ransom to N2.5 million for each of the victims, but even that amount is beyond what the communities can raise,” the resident said, expressing concern over the fate of the abductees.

Barau, FG delegation visit Katsina over deaths of Sheikh Kaura, ex-Customs ACG Bagiwa

January 22, 2026

Jibrin Barau, the Deputy President of the Senate, on Thursday led a Federal Government delegation to Katsina State to condole with the government and families of Sheikh Habibu Yahaya Kaura, a prominent Islamic cleric, and Lawal Bagiwa, a former Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Both men died on Wednesday, 20 January 2026, and were buried the same day in accordance with Islamic rites.

The delegation, sent by President Bola Tinubu, was received by Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda.

Members of the delegation included Hope Uzodimma, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor; Mai Mala Buni, Yobe State Governor; James Faleke, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance; and Ibrahim Kabiru Masari, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters.

Speaking at the residence of the late Sheikh Kaura, Barau said the visit was on behalf of President Tinubu to convey the Federal Government’s condolences, describing the cleric as a truthful and upright scholar whose life was devoted to the service of Islam and humanity.

He said the President regarded Sheikh Kaura’s death as a significant loss, not only to Katsina State but to the country at large, given his religious influence and contributions to society.

Prayers were offered for the repose of the cleric’s soul and for strength for his family and followers.

The delegation also visited the residence of the late Lawal Bagiwa, where Barau described the retired customs officer as an accomplished public servant who served the country diligently and rose to the rank of Assistant Comptroller-General before his retirement.

Governor Radda thanked President Tinubu for the condolence visit, saying the gesture reflected the Federal Government’s concern for Katsina State and the families of the deceased.

“This means a lot to us”, the governor said, expressing appreciation on behalf of the state government, the bereaved families and the people of Katsina.

The visit comes amid tributes from political, religious and community leaders to both men, who were widely regarded as influential figures in Katsina State and beyond.

Nigeria moves to integrate Islamic finance into financial reporting system

January 22, 2026

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, announced plans to integrate Islamic finance accounting and auditing standards into Nigeria’s financial reporting system, a move aimed at boosting transparency, expanding financial inclusion, and positioning the country as a hub for non-interest finance in Africa.

The initiative was unveiled by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) during a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja.

The standards, developed by the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), a Bahrain-based body established in 1991, are widely recognised across countries with strong Islamic finance markets, including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Sudan, Indonesia, and parts of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

AAOIFI standards are tailored to the unique nature of non-interest financial transactions such as profit-and-loss sharing, sukuk (Islamic bonds), takaful (Islamic insurance), and other Shari’ah-compliant products that conventional reporting frameworks often fail to capture.

Currently, Islamic finance institutions in Nigeria rely on conventional reporting systems, making adjustments to reflect Shari’ah-compliant transactions. The planned integration is expected to close these gaps, strengthen credibility, and align Nigeria’s non-interest finance sector with global best practices while maintaining local regulatory requirements.

By adopting these standards, Nigeria hopes to attract investment, deepen trust in its financial system, and accelerate the growth of Islamic finance, a sector increasingly seen as vital for diversifying the economy and promoting inclusive development.

Impeachment: ‘Rivers People Have The Final Say Not Lawmakers’ – Annkio Briggs

January 23, 2026

Niger Delta rights activist, Annkio Briggs, has declared that the people of Rivers State want Governor Siminalayi Fubara to remain in office beyond 2027.

Naija News reports that Briggs made this known while reacting to the impeachment saga involving the Rivers State House of Assembly and Fubara.

In an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, Briggs said that the power to decide who governs Rivers State rests with the people, not members of the State House of Assembly.

Briggs maintained that the Rivers lawmakers have no power to tell the people of the state who to vote for in the next election.

She said, “What I’m concerned about is that the people of Rivers State have the final say, and not the members of the State House of Assembly.

“Unfortunately, the Assembly members do not have this knowledge that the power is not theirs to exercise, it is the people of Rivers state that own this power to exercise.

“I want to caution and I’m calling on the federal government, and now I’m going to call on the president, and I’m calling on the political party, APC, that they have received the governor of River State, Fubara into their political party of which the River State House of Assembly members are also members.

“The APC, ought to be very careful. It’s going into election next year. It has to be very careful how it is going about winning this election, how it is going about securing the votes of Niger Delta as a whole, and securing the votes of Rivers people.”

COVID-19: Agency Reacts As US Officially Withdraws From WHO

January 23, 2026

The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organisation (WHO), citing alleged failures in the global health body’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its inability to implement critical reforms.

The White House announced the decision on Thursday, stating that the move followed what it described as years of concerns over the WHO’s transparency, independence and response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

In a joint statement, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of State said the decision was driven by WHO’s “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that arose out of Wuhan, China.”

The statement also accused the organisation of failing to adopt urgently needed reforms and lacking independence from political influence by member states.

It read, “The organisation’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that arose out of Wuhan, China, its failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states informed this decision.”

According to the White House, the withdrawal process formally began on January 20, 2025, when President Donald Trump announced plans for the United States to leave the global health body.

Over the course of the year, the US gradually halted funding to the WHO, withdrew its personnel and redirected programmes previously coordinated through the organisation to direct partnerships with other countries and institutions.

Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said the US would maintain only limited engagement with WHO to finalise the withdrawal.

They noted that the United States would “be coordinating with WHO solely in a limited fashion to effectuate withdrawal.”

WHO Faulted Over Early COVID-19 Response

The White House further criticised the WHO for delaying the declaration of a global public health emergency and a pandemic during the early stages of COVID-19, saying the delay cost the world valuable time.

According to the statement, “WHO’s delay in declaring a public health emergency and pandemic cost the world critical weeks as the virus spread.”

It also accused the organisation’s leadership of echoing and praising China’s response to the outbreak, despite evidence of early underreporting, suppression of information and delays in confirming human-to-human transmission.

The statement added that the WHO downplayed the risks of asymptomatic transmission and failed to promptly acknowledge the airborne spread of the virus.

The US also faulted WHO for its post-pandemic reforms, particularly its report on the possible origins of COVID-19.

The White House said the report dismissed the possibility that the virus was created in a laboratory, despite China’s refusal to release genetic data from early cases or provide details on activities and biosafety conditions at laboratories in Wuhan.

“Its report evaluating the possible origins of COVID-19 rejected the possibility that scientists created the virus, even though China refused to provide genetic sequences from individuals infected early in the pandemic,” the statement said.

WHO Reacts, Expresses Regret

Reacting to the development, the WHO disclosed that the United States had not paid its membership fees for 2024 and 2025, amounting to about $260 million.

The organisation said discussions on the US exit would be held at its executive board meeting in February, but admitted it had no mechanism to prevent the withdrawal.

WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, expressed regret over the decision, urging the US to reconsider.

He said, “I hope that the US will reconsider its decision and rejoin WHO. Withdrawal is a loss for the US and also a loss for the rest of the world… It was not about money but about cooperation and solidarity.”

Despite exiting WHO, the White House said the United States would continue to play a leading role in global health through direct engagement with other countries, non-governmental organisations, private sector partners and faith-based groups.

It said the focus would remain on emergency response, biosecurity coordination and health innovation, both domestically and internationally.

Presidency Makes U-turn, Says No Ambassador Posted To Turkey

The Presidency has clarified an earlier statement it issued to the press, saying that no ambassador-designate has been posted to Turkey.

According to Western Post, the presidency stated that the appointment is still under review following a naming mix-up.

The clarification was contained in a corrected State House statement issued on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu.

According to the statement, President Tinubu has so far approved the posting of only three ambassador-designates from the 68 nominees earlier confirmed by the Senate.

The Presidency noted that Ambassador Ayodele Oke has been posted to France, while Colonel Lateef Are (rtd) was approved as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to the United States of America. Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu, a former envoy to South Korea, was also confirmed as the High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom.

The Presidency said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been directed to notify the governments of the three countries in line with diplomatic procedures, stressing that no decision has been finalised regarding the Turkey posting.

It added that the review process is ongoing and that a formal announcement will be made once a decision is reached.

Naija News recalls that in a statement on Thursday night, the presidency had announced the posting of Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, former governor of Kebbi, as the ambassador-designate to Türkiye, where the President is scheduled to begin a state visit next week.

Gov Yusuf’s Planned Defection May Rekindle Sanusi, Bayero Kano Emirship Crisis

January 23, 2026

The planned defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reignited anxieties over one of Nigeria’s most sensitive traditional disputes – the lingering tussle between Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

Political observers warn that the rumoured move could reopen old wounds in the North-West state, where power, tradition and politics remain deeply intertwined.

Beyond the emirate crisis, the defection speculation has reportedly heightened political tension within Kano, straining relations between Yusuf’s supporters and loyalists of his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a leading figure in the NNPP.

Daily Post reported that Yusuf’s alleged defection plan was one of the issues discussed during his closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday.

Sources further disclosed that the governor has fixed another defection date after several postponements.

The Kano emirate crisis dates back to 2020 when then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje dethroned Sanusi and installed Ado Bayero following changes to the emirate structure.

The move was widely criticised as politically motivated and deepened divisions across the state.

Upon assuming office in 2023, Yusuf repealed the emirate law, restored the single Kano Emirate and reinstated Sanusi, while directing Bayero to vacate the palace.

While Sanusi’s supporters hailed the move as corrective justice, critics described it as executive overreach.

Bayero’s return, legal battle

Refusing to relinquish his claim, Bayero later returned to Kano and took up residence at the Nassarawa mini palace under heavy security protection, while challenging his removal in court.

In March, the Court of Appeal in Abuja directed all parties to exercise restraint pending the determination of appeals at the Supreme Court. Since then, little has been heard officially on the matter.

Against this fragile backdrop, Yusuf’s alleged move to the APC has sparked renewed concern.

Supporters of Ado Bayero, who continue to regard him as the legitimate Emir, see the rumoured defection as an opportunity for renewed legal and political contestation.

Conversely, Sanusi’s loyalists fear that the Emir, already a polarising figure, could once again face political headwinds if the balance of power shifts.

‘Defection could expose Kano to security risks’

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Editor for Politics at Arise News, Sumner Sambo, warned that Yusuf’s defection could deepen the emirate crisis and pose serious security risks.

He said the situation had effectively created two power centres within the Kano emirate.

“Some people call Ado Bayero the federal Emir, while Sanusi Lamido is seen as the state Emir,” Sambo said.

Ex-Pension Boss, Abdulrasheed Maina Regains Freedom From Prison

January 22, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

A former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, has been released from prison.

Naija News reports that Maina, who was serving an eight-year jail term, had been held at the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory.

Although details surrounding his release remain sketchy, reliable sources told Punch that the former pension boss regained his freedom several weeks ago.

Maina was convicted in November 2021 by the Federal High Court on charges bordering on money laundering involving over 2bn in pension funds.

He was arraigned in October 2019 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a 12-count charge, to which he pleaded not guilty.

In his judgment, Justice Okon Abang held that Maina stole over 2bn belonging to pensioners, “most of whom have died without reaping the fruits of their labour.”

The judge further ruled that Maina concealed his identity as a signatory to several bank accounts by using the names of his family members without their knowledge.

Justice Abang found the former PRTT chairman guilty on all 12 counts and sentenced him to a cumulative 61 years in prison, which was ordered to run concurrently. The sentence took effect from October 25, 2019, the date of his arraignment, effectively pegging his jail term at eight years.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, Maina appealed the judgment. However, in May 2023, the Court of Appeal upheld both his conviction and the eight-year sentence.

Abdul Karim: Selangor pig farming issue should not be framed as religious or racial matter

23 Jan 2026

KUCHING, Jan 23 — The controversy surrounding pig farming in Selangor should not be misrepresented as an issue of religious dietary practices or racial differences, said Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Responding to remarks made during a recent parliamentary debate by Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin, the Sarawak minister of youth, sports and entrepreneur development said such framing only fuels unnecessary misunderstanding and division.

Abdul Karim said the core issue raised concerns the management and location of pig farms, not the consumption of pork by non-Muslims.

“There has never been an issue about whether non-Muslims can eat pork,” he said, adding that Muslims in Malaysia have long respected the dietary practices of other communities.

“If you (non-Muslims) are allowed to eat it, then eat it. That has never been contested,” he added.

He said this at a press conference for Sukan Sarawak (Suksar) IV 2026 at his office on the 17th floor of the Baitulmakmur II Building here today.

Abdul Karim also urged the public to refrain from using demeaning terms when referring to animals, warning that such language risks crossing moral and religious boundaries shared across faiths.

“The moment you say that the animal is filthy, you are going against the Almighty.

“Whether you are Muslim, Christian, or of another religion, we must respect God’s creation,” he said.

Abdul Karim, who is also the state tourism, creative industry, and performing arts minister, noted that criticism had surfaced on social media after pork was reportedly described as “smelly”, with comparisons drawn to traditional foods such as belacan and budu.

“Foods that are familiar and valued by one community should not be ridiculed by another. It is only natural that those who consume such foods would hit back,” he added.

Abdul Karim, however, said a more concerning matter was the alleged linkage between pork consumption and corruption.

“There was an implication that those who eat pork are less corrupt, while those who do not are more corrupt,” he said.

“That is not how we should approach the issue.” — The Borneo Post

Jakim identifies 10 active deviant teachings in Malaysia, warns groups now operate covertly

23 Jan 2026

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 23 — The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has identified 10 active deviant teachings in the country, said its director-general, Datuk Sirajuddin Suhaimee.

He said the sects were not confined to any state, moving freely to areas deemed safe for recruiting followers.

“Some even operate overseas… These deviant teachings were once easy to spot, but now they come in the form of modules or motivational programmes,” he said at a special media briefing here today.

Sirajuddin said a key challenge in tackling deviant teachings is that followers often practise in secret, making legal action difficult.

He said Jakim is focusing on education and prevention to help the public spot deviations from true Islamic teachings.

“It’s not just about the group’s name, but their practices and beliefs need to be highlighted so people understand and don’t get involved,” he said, adding that strict enforcement alone is insufficient, and a more harmonious, educational approach works better in the long run.

“When people realise a practice is wrong, they tend to avoid it. We’re not just banning it, we also offer guidance and alternatives,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sirajuddin said Jakim is working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to monitor deviant beliefs online.

“Not all information online is accurate. People should be careful and turn to authorities like Jakim or their state religious departments,” he said, adding that a coordinated effort by government, state religious authorities, and the public is key to curbing deviant beliefs and protecting Islamic faith. — Bernama

Malaysia condemns Israeli attacks in Gaza as ceasefire violation

22 Jan 2026

Malaysia condemns Israel’s latest Gaza attacks as a serious breach of international law and a violation of the declared ceasefire, calling for an immediate end to hostilities.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has strongly condemned the latest Israeli attacks in Gaza.

The Foreign Ministry said the assaults resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians, including children and journalists.

In a statement, Wisma Putra said the attack constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian and human rights law.

It stressed the assault was a clear breach of the ceasefire agreement declared by US President Donald Trump.

That ceasefire was part of a 20-point Peace Plan announced on Sept 29, 2025.

“Malaysia reiterates that all parties to the conflict are obliged to uphold international law,” the ministry said.

“Attacks that result in the loss of civilian lives and impede access to safety and essential services are unacceptable.”

It added such actions undermine efforts towards de-escalation, peace, and stability.

Wisma Putra reiterated its call for an immediate and sustained cessation of hostilities.

It urged all parties to return to meaningful negotiations for a just and lasting peace.

The ministry reaffirmed Malaysia’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights.

This includes their right to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.

Malaysia supports a state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Anwar to discuss cancellation of Bukit Tagar pig farming project with Selangor MB

By Malay Mail

23 Jan 2026

BANGI, Jan 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will consult Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari on a proposal to cancel plans for a large scale pig farming project in Bukit Tagar.

According to Berita Harian, Anwar said that he would seek Amirudin’s views and, if possible, halt the project before considering relocation to a more suitable site, provided the technology remains assured.

“Even if the technology is sound, it would not be appropriate to proceed in an area that causes public anxiety,” Anwar said after performing Friday prayers at Surau Al Amin in Bandar Baru Bangi.

He added that the Cabinet, during its meeting earlier today, had noted the issue involves environmental concerns as well as unease among communities living near the proposed site.

PAS will lead Perikatan after Muhyiddin’s resignation, Hadi says, citing party resolution

23 Jan 2026

MARANG, Jan 23 — PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party will continue to lead Perikatan Nasional (PN) following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as chairman of the coalition on January 1.

He said a previous PAS Muktamar had adopted a resolution mandating the party to helm the coalition.

“That is the PAS Muktamar resolution for PAS to be the chair (of PN),” he told reporters after delivering a Duha lecture at Masjid Rusila here today.

Asked about Muhyiddin’s position, Abdul Hadi said there has been no decision on the matter, adding that PAS already has a candidate for the post.

The Marang Member of Parliament also said PAS has yet to receive any invitation to an official PN meeting to discuss the appointment of a new chairman.

He attributed the delay in convening the meeting to administrative and management matters within the coalition, but said the issue is expected to be finalised within one to two weeks. — Bernama

MIC’s potential PN move sparks debate on BN’s future

23 Jan 2026

Political analysts are split on whether MIC joining Perikatan Nasional would significantly weaken Barisan Nasional’s standing.

PETALING JAYA: Analysts are divided on whether MIC joining Perikatan Nasional (PN) would weaken Barisan Nasional (BN).

International Islamic University Malaysia political science associate professor Dr Syaza Shukri said MIC exiting BN may not weaken the coalition in terms of machinery, but it may have a symbolic impact.

“BN wants to portray itself as a multi-ethnic coalition. Without MIC, it signals that non-Malay communities have less confidence in its credibility,” she told theSun.

She added that MIC may argue its move is justified by BN’s cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Madani government, which it perceives as having failed to prioritise the Indian community across three years in power.

She also said MIC is unlikely to face major obstacles in working with PAS, which is PN’s strongest component party, despite having no prior cooperation.

“Unlike the Chinese community, the Indian community is more open to PAS because PAS tends to target DAP, rather than the Indian community. It also depends on how much PAS could convince them that the rights of non-Muslims would be protected.”

Meanwhile, Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said MIC leaving BN would open up more seats for Umno to contest.

He added that the move would reflect the awareness within MIC that its future within the coalition has become increasingly uncertain.

“Even the seats it currently holds are being sought after by Umno divisions in those constituencies, as it has been proven that Umno voters far outnumber voters who support MIC.

“In this sense, MIC’s departure would not disappoint or weaken BN. In fact, Umno would be able to contest seats currently held by MIC.”

In the 15th general election, MIC contested 10 parliamentary seats – Sungai Siput, Tapah, Hulu Selangor, Teluk Intan, Padang Serai, Batu, Kuala Langat, Port Dickson, Kota Raja and Segamat.

However, it won only one parliamentary seat, Tapah, which was secured by its deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.

On Wednesday, an online news portal reported that MIC had been accepted into PN.

This was confirmed by former PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who said the party’s application to join PN, made last year, has been accepted and it is now up to MIC to materialise the matter.

Jamaat ameer urges parties not to ‘hurt’ one another

22 Jan 2026

Calling on all to remain “united in the national interest,” Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today urged political actors to refrain from attacking one another and instead take their own programmes to the people.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists this morning at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, ahead of his election campaign across eight districts in the northern region.

“The people will accept, endorse and show their love for whomever they support with their precious votes. All of us should respect that,” the Jamaat ameer said.

Following the allocation of election symbols, candidates and their supporters entered the final phase of campaigning from yesterday.

On the first day of campaigning, the BNP sought to target its rivals with allegations, while Jamaat and the NCP responded in a similar manner. At the same time, candidates and their supporters reached out to voters with a range of promises.

Jamaat formally launched its campaign yesterday through a public rally in Dhaka’s Mirpur. Shafiqur Rahman is contesting from Dhaka-15.

As part of the campaign, the Jamaat ameer is travelling to Panchagarh today. After a rally there at 11:00am, he is scheduled to address gatherings in Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Rangpur. On Saturday, he will visit Gaibandha, Bogura, Sirajganj and Pabna.

“Everyone should refrain from any dishonest intent to influence the election outcome through alternative means. No one at any level of the state should be involved in such actions,” he said at Dhaka airport.

UK Pledges £8 Million to Tackle Child Malnutrition in Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

January 22, 2026

UNICEF says the UK has committed £8 million to support a joint programme aimed at reducing severe child malnutrition across Afghanistan.

UNICEF announced on Wednesday, January 21 that the British government will provide £8 million in funding to the agency, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme to address rising child malnutrition in Afghanistan.

The agency said that the funding will be channelled through the “First Foods Afghanistan” initiative, designed to improve access to safe, affordable and diverse complementary foods for children aged six to 23 months.

Under the programme, more than 150,000 children under the age of two are expected to benefit directly, while over 640,000 caregivers and community members will benefit indirectly.

Afghanistan has faced a deepening economic crisis in recent years, with widespread poverty and reduced access to nutritious food, leaving young children among the most vulnerable groups.

Humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned that the lack of appropriate complementary foods during the first two years of life can cause long-term damage to children’s physical and cognitive development.

Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, said a very large number of children are being pushed towards malnutrition, with nearly 80 percent of affected children under the age of two, a critical stage for growth alongside breastfeeding.

He thanked the UK for its support, saying the funding will help UNICEF and partner organisations strengthen systems that improve complementary foods for children and mothers.

The assistance comes as the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification report projects that in 2026 nearly 3.7 million children under five and 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women in Afghanistan will suffer from acute malnutrition.

600km solo hike launched to protest river degradation

22 Jan 2026

Environmental advocacy group Dharitri Rakkhay Amra (Dhora) and the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC) have launched a 600kilometre solo hiking expedition to protest river degradation and fossil fuel expansion.

Starting January 24, hiker Masfikul Hasan Tony will trek from Kurigram’s northern Brahmaputra basin to the coastal shores of Bhola, under the title “Nodite Praner Kanna: Boisshik Ushnotar Biruddhe Darao”.

The journey will begin at Char Italukanda in Roumari upazila of Kurigram and conclude on February 9 at Char KukriMukri in Charfesson upazila of Bhola district, on the Bay of Bengal coast.

The announcement was made at a press conference at the National Press Club today.

Speakers said local communities along riverbanks and civil society representatives would express solidarity against environmental and climate disasters during the expedition.

The press conference was chaired by Dr Mujibur Rahman Hawladar, advisory council member of Dhora.

“Rivers are living entities, and protecting them is a collective responsibility,” said Dr Mujibur, urging authorities to extend full cooperation to ensure Tony’s safe journey.

Tony said completing a hike from the Brahmaputra to the Bay of Bengal was a matter of pride. “Through this journey, we want to raise awareness among people,” he said.

Other participants at the press conference included Inam Al Haque, founder of BMTC; M S Siddiqui, joint convener of Dhora, among other environmental activists.

US Tariffs Raise Doubts Over India’s Chabahar Port Investment

By Fidel Rahmati

January 22, 2026

New 25% US tariffs on countries doing business with Iran have cast doubt over India’s Chabahar port project, balancing strategy and Washington pressure.

India faces uncertainty over its investment in Iran’s Chabahar port after the Trump administration imposed new 25% tariffs on nations engaging economically with Tehran.

The project, a collaboration between India, Iran, and Afghanistan, is vital for India’s access to Afghanistan and Central Asia without passing through Pakistan.

India had committed around $500 million for the port’s development, including linked road and rail infrastructure to Afghanistan, aiming to strengthen regional trade and reduce dependency on Pakistan routes.

US sanctions against Iran have long complicated the Chabahar project. While Washington granted occasional exemptions, its 2018 withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal increased uncertainty over the port’s operations.

Recent developments saw India transfer $120 million of its committed funds to Tehran while signaling to the US Treasury a potential reduction of its operational activities at the port.

Despite this, Indian officials insist that exiting Chabahar is not an option. Delhi is exploring alternative financing mechanisms to sustain the project while managing US pressure.

Chabahar remains strategically critical for India, as it provides the only practical land-access route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, crucial for India’s regional influence and trade expansion.

India has also strengthened ties with the Middle East, particularly the UAE, and joined initiatives such as the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor and I2U2, potentially providing alternative routes to meet strategic needs.

Currently, India is likely to maintain involvement in Chabahar through indirect participation and continued diplomatic efforts, aiming to protect strategic interests while seeking an extension of US sanction exemptions.
