PARIS: Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, has also been sentenced to 99 lashes for a photo published of her without a headscarf, according to her son.
In an interview published on the website of the French magazine La Regle du Jeu and the blog Dentelles et Tchador, Mohammadi-Ashtiani's son Sajjad said they learned of the new punishment from released inmates.
He said that a prison judge confirmed that she was to be lashed for spreading "corruption and indecency" by the publication of a photograph of her without a headscarf that appeared in a British newspaper.
The Times of London published on August 28 a photo of a woman without a headscarf that it said was Mohammadi-Ashtiani, however on September 3 it said the attribution of the photo, which it received from one of her lawyers that has fled Iran, was incorrect.
The photo "... is certainly not that of my mother," said Sajjad.
Mohammadi-Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was given the death penalty for an extramarital relationship.
Iran has subsequently said she was also convicted of being an accomplice in her husband's death, though she has denied that was the case.
Her plight has prompted protests in Europe and an international campaign to spare her. Tehran has provisionally suspended the death sentence.

Eight policemen dead in Pakistan suicide attack

ISLAMABAD - At least eight policemen were killed and 13 wounded in a suspected suicide attack on a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, police said, the third such attack in the country within a week.
Nearly 100 people were killed in suicide bombings on processions of minority Shia Muslims in the eastern city of Lahore and southwestern city of Quetta last week.
The attacks by militants linked to Al Qaeda and Taliban ended a lull in violence after Pakistan was hit by the worst floods in its history, which have affected nearly 20 million people and made millions of people homeless.
In the latest attack, a suicide bomber drove his car into a police station in the town of Lakki Marwat.
“Eight dead bodies are lying in the police station. We are gathering more information,” Abdul Rahim, a police official of the town told Reuters by telephone.
The Pakistani Taliban, who are now also seen as an increasing threat to the United States, claimed responsibility for attacks in Lahore and Quetta.
On Friday, the Taliban also threatened to launch attacks in the United States and Europe “very soon”, two days after the Washington added the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or Taliban Movement of Pakistan, to its list of “foreign terrorist organisations”.

MOSCOW — A suicide bomber drove a car packed with explosives into a military installation in a Muslim region of southern Russia early Sunday, killing three soldiers and injuring more than 30 others, officials said.
The attack in the region, Dagestan, underscored how it has become as violent as neighboring Chechnya, which had long been considered the center of an Islamic separatist movement in the country’s Caucasus Mountains. Russia has fought two civil wars in Chechnya, but even as the violence has ebbed there, it has surged in Dagestan.
The suicide bomber barreled through the gates of a firing range that had been set up by a brigade on the outskirts of Buynaksk in Dagestan around 1 a.m., a military spokesman, Col. Aleksei Kuznetsov, said at a news conference in Moscow.
Soldiers opened fire and were able to block the path of the vehicle, preventing a higher casualty total after it exploded, he said.
There was no claim of responsibility for the bombing, but the insurgency in Dagestan has shown increasing potency in the last year. Experts say a combination of Islamic militancy, clan fighting and corruption has created conditions for such violence.
President Dmitri A. Medvedev condemned the attack on Sunday and sent his defense minister to Dagestan to lead an inquiry into the causes.
The leader of the Dagestan region, Magomedsalam M. Magomedov, who was appointed by the Kremlin, told Russian news agencies the attack indicated that the insurgency is still powerful.
“The republic’s law enforcement agencies have held a range of successful operations against militants within the recent time,” he said, “but they still have to augment efforts to eliminate militant bands entirely.”
The Kremlin has struggled to develop measures to crack down on the insurgency there, calling for both harsh measures and new policies to address what it acknowledges is pervasive poverty and other problems that can give rise to terrorism.
The region has attracted particular attention this year after two female suicide bombers from Dagestan attacked the Moscow subway system in March, killing 40 people.

At least 24 killed in DR Congo boat capsize

KINSHASA — A fishing boat capsized in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 24 people, government spokesman Lamber Mende said on Monday.
“Twenty-four people died in a capsize on the Ruki river in (western) Equateur province,” on Sunday, he said, referring to a tributary of the Congo river, and added that the boat was carrying “between 24 and 30 people.”
Mende said another boat accident occurred a day earlier in the central Kasai-Occidental province and that 24 people had managed to swim to safety.
In July, 19 people were officially declared dead and 30 went missing after a boat sank between the province of Bandundu and the capital Kinshasa.
Boats and ferries are commonly used in the sprawling country, home to several major lakes and rivers, including the 4,700-kilometre (2,937-mile) Congo.
Accidents are frequent due to overloading, poor maintenence and the lack of safety standards and equipment on most vessels.

NEW YORK: American Muslims are boosting security at mosques, seeking help from leaders of other faiths and airing ads underscoring their loyalty to the United States — all ahead of a 9/11 anniversary they fear could bring more trouble for their communities.
Their goal is not only to protect Muslims, but also to prevent them from retaliating if provoked. One September 11 protest in New York against the proposed mosque near ground zero is expected to feature Geert Wilders, the aggressively anti-Islam Dutch lawmaker. The same day in Gainesville, Florida, the Dove World Outreach Center plans to burn copies of the Quran.
"We can expect crazy people out there will do things, but we don't want to create a hysteria," among Muslims, said Victor Begg of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan. "Americans, in general, they support pluralism. It's just that there's a lot of misinformation out there that has created confusion."

Millions gather at Holy Mosques seeking Lailat Al-Qadr blessings

MAKKAH/MADINAH: Over three million Muslims attended special prayers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah on Sunday, the 27th night of Ramadan, seeking the blessings of Lailat Al-Qadr (the Night of Power).
The Grand Mosque in Makkah overflowed with hundreds of thousands of Muslims as they came to perform Umrah, attend Taraweeh and Qiyamullail prayers. They also offered special prayers seeking the blessings of Lailat Al-Qadr, which is worth more than a 1,000 months in terms of rewards.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) has said: “Whoever offers voluntary prayers during the Night of Power out of belief and expecting its reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven.”

Floods in Pakistan Carry the Seeds of Upheaval

THATA SIAL, Pakistan — When the governor of Punjab Province arrived recently in this small town with truckloads of relief goods for flood victims, his visit was as much a political mission as a humanitarian one. His message to the hundred or so displaced people gathered under an awning was that the government was there for them.
“The people say this was an act of God,” the governor, Salman Taseer, said in an interview after reassuring the crowd. “But what comes now, they say, is the act of man. If we don’t deliver, they will not forgive us.”
After scathing criticism that they were unprepared for the disaster and inept in their initial response, government officials, ministers and even President Asif Ali Zardari are crisscrossing flood-affected areas of the country in a frantic effort to ease public anger and despair.

MINGORA: Suspect terrorists blew up a girl school in Kalam late on Friday night, while the military said that it would chase the perpetrators until they were arrested. The attack on the school was the first such incident since the devastating floods that ravaged the area, Swat district in particular, and the military has been focused on rescue and relief operations, since then. “Some remaining militants took advantage of the night to destroy the girl high school in Kalam,” a statement from the military said on Saturday. “When the army is helping the flood-hit people, the militants used the occasion to destroy the school,” it added. Local residents said that the school was not completely destroyed but some portions were damaged in the attack. “Army jawans are chasing those who destroyed the school,” the statement said. The military said that some terrorists had been penetrating into Swat from the bordering Dir.

Gandhi’s grandson seeks world support for Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 4: Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has appealed for world solidarity in response to the floods that have devastated millions of Pakistani lives.
“We have to get the conscience of the world working on this jointly,” said Mr Gandhi, a research professor at the Centre for South Asian and Middle
Eastern Studies at the University of Illinois, at a press conference he addressed here on Friday with Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN Hussain Haroon.
Mr Gandhi thanked the Indians for the help they have extended, but said the ‘Indian heart’ could do much more.
He said the poorest were the prime sufferers, adding he prayed that the disaster would help South Asia to reorder its priorities to extract some good out of the tragedy, “including the end to the divisions between people in the region”.

Emirates owner to sell Quran inscribed by Aurangzeb

THE MANUSCRIPT of the holy Quran — parts of which are believed to have been inscribed by Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor of India — will be up for grabs at an auction to be organised by the German auction house Auktionshaus Sebök on October 9.
According to a statement released on the official website of the auction house ( www.seboek-auctions.com ), the over 300- year- old manuscript of 14.5cmx24cm size will be auctioned in Bamberg by its current Emirates owner, who chose to remain anonymous.
The owner, said Auktionshaus Sebök, acquired the copy of the Quran after it was passed down through generations of the family by his greatgrandfather, who served as the governor of Oudh during the rule of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor of the country.

US drone strike kills 8 militants in Pakistan: Officials

MIRANSHAH (PAKISTAN): A US drone strike today killed eight militants including three foreign fighters in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border, security officials said.
The strike targeted a militant compound in Datta Khel village in North Waziristan district, a known hub for Taliban and al-Qaida linked militants.
"A US drone fired missiles on a house used by militants as a compound. Eight militants have been killed in the attack and 12 others were wounded," a security official in Peshawar said by telephone.
Two intelligence officials in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan district, also confirmed the attack and the toll. One of them said that a double-cabin pickup truck was also destroyed by a missile fired from a drone.

Two intelligence officials said the strike targeted a house and a vehicle in a village near Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan. It was the third such attack in the area in 24 hours. The Haqqani network, a terrorist group bent on driving US and NATO troops out of Afghanistan, dominates the region. QUETTA: Three NATO tankers were torched on Saturday in the Mongechar area of Kalat district. According to official sources, NATO tankers were carrying fuel for NATO forces in Afghanistan and were on their way to Kandahar. Unknown armed men on a motorcycle intercepted the oil tankers and took the people on board hostage at gunpoint and set the trucks on fire. The assailants managed to flee from the scene. Law enforcement agencies rushed to the spot soon after the incident. A case had been registered in the Mongechar police station and investigations were underway. In the past few weeks, more than 20 NATO oil tankers had been set on fire, going through the same route, but no organization has claimed responsibility so far.

KABUL, Sept 4: A suicide bomber perched on the back of a motorcycle killed seven people, including four Afghan policemen, in an attack Saturday in the increasingly violent northern province of Kunduz, a government spokesman said.
Sixteen other people were injured in the midday attack in the provincial capital, also called Kunduz, provincial spokesman Mahbubullah Sayedi said.
The city is a major transportation hub and lies along a crucial supply line for coalition forces that has been repeatedly attacked by Taliban insurgents, who have also stepped up attacks on police and civilians in the province in an apparent attempt to destabilize local authorities and spread their insurgency beyond their strongholds in the country’s south.

25 charged in Bahrain with anti-govt plot

MANAMA, Sept 4: Twenty-five Shia activists have been charged with forming a terrorist network and trying to topple Bahrain’s Sunni-dominated government, says the state television.
The 25 men facing charges are among some 250 Shia people who have been arrested since mid-August over allegations of disrupting public security.
The TV said on Saturday that two of the men were charged in absentia. No trial date has been set.
The crackdown follows a series of violent Shia-led protests accusing the government of discrimination.
Most of the detained activists are members of two Shia opposition groups – the HAQ Movement for Liberty and Democracy and the Islamic Wafa group. Shias are a majority in Bahrain, but the country is ruled by a Sunni royal family.

‘Iranian nation will support Pakistan’

KARACHI: A 15-member Iranian delegation, led by Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Najjar, called on Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari at the Bilawal House on Saturday, a statement said.
They discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, and the situation Pakistan is faced with because of the recent floods.
The delegation informed the president that the Iranian nation would support the Pakistanis in their hour of need.
Iran has pledged to provide $10 million, around $1.3 million of which has already been delivered, the delegation said. The delegation, which arrived in the city from Islamabad, was also given an aerial view of the flood-affected areas of Thatta district.

14 militants killed

PARACHINAR, Sept 4: Fourteen militants were killed in a bomb explosion and shelling on terrorist hideouts in central Kurram tribal region on Saturday.
Eight militants died when their vehicle was hit by a bomb detonated by remote control in the Spaircate area.
The security forces destroyed three hideouts in Chenarak, killing six militants and injuring 10 others.
According to sources, a large number of militants have been moving to Kurram from Orakzai Agency because of the military operation there.

King gets doctorate from Umm Al-Qura

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah on Saturday received an honorary doctorate degree in the service of humanity from Umm Al-Qura University. Higher Education Minister Dr. Khaled Al-Anqari and Dr. Bakri bin Maetouk Assas, the university's president, presented the degree to the king.
Speaking at a ceremony at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah, Assas commended King Abdullah for the international recognition he achieved for humanitarian services. He referred to the king's efforts to alleviate the suffering of Pakistan's flood victims and his historic initiative to promote interfaith dialogue.
The university chief highlighted King Abdullah's contributions to protect human rights in the Kingdom, strengthen national economy by establishing mega economic cities, and resolve global financial crisis by taking part in world economic summits.

Karzai forms council to push talks with Taliban

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday announced that he had set up a council to pursue peace talks with the Taliban, who have been waging an insurgency in Afghanistan for almost nine years.
The formation of the High Peace Council was “a significant step towards peace talks,” a statement from Karzai’s office said. The move is one of the most significant steps Karzai has taken in his oft-stated efforts to open a dialogue with the Taliban leadership aimed at speeding an end to the long war.
Karzai’s plan to create the High Peace Council was approved in June at a “peace jirga” in Kabul attended by community, tribal, religious and political leaders from across the country. Full report at:

Royal pardons released 25,000 over year

JEDDAH: About 25,000 convicts in jails across the Kingdom have benefited from royal pardons issued over the past year.
Three royal orders of pardon were issued since last Ramadan, which commenced on Sept. 22. While two of the orders were related to Ramadan, one pardon order marked the occasion of the healthy return of Crown Prince Sultan, deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation, to the Kingdom.
“All prisoners serving time on public rights will benefit from the pardon declared by the king,” Director General of Prisons Maj. Gen. Ali Al-Harithy said in a recent statement. “But prisoners convicted of security violations do not come under the pardon.”
Al-Harithy, however, said the pardon did not mean that their punishment would be totally dropped — exonerated convicts who return to prison will have the time reduced from their previous sentences added to their new punishments.

LEH: Notwithstanding demands for its scrapping, the Army favours continuation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir citing "special circumstances" in the state.
"For special circumstances you require special laws. There are special circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir and that require special laws to deal with it," Army's Northern Command Chief Lieutenant General B S Jaswal said.
Appreciating the work of the Army personnel, he said, "My troops are the finest in the world and whatever they do, they do it with good intentions. And if that good intention is questioned time and again, that will make their function difficult. It is very very important that they have AFSPA."

Plucky US girl won’t let acid attack ruin life

A 28- YEAR- OLD woman severely burned when a stranger threw an acid- like liquid in her face has vowed that the attack will not ruin her life.
Bethany Storro was about to walk into a Starbucks cafe when a female approached her out of the blue and asked: “ Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?” The stranger then threw a cup of liquid in Storro’s face — and doctors believe it was a kind of acid.
She is now recovering in the burns unit at a hospital in Portland, Oregon, having undergone surgery.
The American woman on Saturday held a news conference recounting her ordeal.

At least 43 killed in violence in Sudan's Darfur

CAIRO: Clashes in a refugee camp in Sudan's restive Darfur region left six people dead, UN-African Union peacekeepers said Saturday, days after violence elsewhere in the area claimed the lives of at least 37 people dead.
The spokesman for the UNAMID mission, Chris Cycmanick, said the fighting took place in the Hamidia refugee camp in West Darfur late Friday night and continued intermittently through to Saturday morning.
According to witnesses in the camp, the clashes between different groups in the camp left six people dead, Cycmanick said. Thirty-three people were wounded.
It was not immediately clear what sparked the violence. Ibrahim al-Helw, a spokesman for a Darfur rebel group in the area, blamed government-allied gunmen for the fighting. He said 10 people were killed and 29 wounded.

President Jacob Zuma to become a father for the 22nd time: Report

DURBAN: South African President Jacob Zuma is to become a father for the 22nd time as his fiancee is pregnant, a media report said.
Zuma's fiancee Bongiwe Gloria Ngema, who recently accompanied the 68-year-old polygamous president on a state visit to China, is expecting a child next year, the 'Ilanga' newspaper quoted her close friend as saying.
Ngema already has one child with the president and a wedding date has been set for December, which will bring to four the number of South Africa's First Ladies.
Reports of Ngema's pregnancy comes only a fortnight after the arrival of President Zuma's 21st child who was born to his second wife amid claims that the newborn boy could be the result of an affair between his mother and her bodyguard.
The president, however, has dismissed the claims as "malicious rumours".
Zuma was forced to make a humiliating apology earlier this year following the birth, out of wedlock, of his 20th child to the daughter of a family friend.

Man behind Gaza offensive of 2008-09 named Israel's next military chief

JERUSALEM: Major General Yoav Galant, who on Sunday was named as Israel's next military chief, is a former special forces commander and one-time lumberjack who is linked to allegations of war crimes.
Galant, 51, was confirmed by the government as the next chief of staff and will replace incumbent Lieutenant General Gabi Ashke nazi in February.
As the army's commander for southern Israel, he oversaw the devastating December 2008-January 2009 offensive in the Gaza Strip in which 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.
A UN probe said both Israel and Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity during the 22-day campaign, which Israel launched in response to rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave.

Status quo on Kashmir only option not available to us: Omar

SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: With the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir government working on various options to address concerns of Kashmiris, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah feels that a firm action on issues like amending or phased withdrawal of AFSPA and resumption of political dialogue is an immediate need.
"Status quo is the only option not available to us," was the prompt reply of the Chief Minister when asked what measures were being considered to address the issues.
"When we talk about removing (rpt) removing status quo, it means resumption of dialogue with all shades of opinion, a review of laws, measures to deal with unemployment whose figures have snowballed into six lakhs over the years," he told PTI.
Omar's comments come at a time when the Central Government is expected to hold a high-level meeting in the next few days.

Key 9/11 mosque backer donated to Hamas charity

NEW YORK: Egyptian-born businessman Hisham Elzanaty, who is a key financial backer of the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero, has been accused of contributing to a US-designated terror group.
The developer leading the project confirmed that Elzanaty, 51, is among the members of a real estate partnership that paid $4.8 million last year for the vacant clothing store that is to be torn down and replaced by a cultural center and mosque. The partnership's general manager, Sharif El-Gamal, confirmed Elzanaty's role in response to reports about his involvement.
"All of these investors are committed, as I am, not to receive funding from any organization that supports terrorism or is hostile to America," El- Gamal said.

Taliban facing acute cash crunch: US General

WASHINGTON: Noting that the Taliban has been driven to desperation around Marjah in southern Afghanistan, a top US general stationed there has said that the terrorist outfit is facing an acute financial crisis.
"We have intelligence that indicates to us that he (Taliban) has got a financial crisis on his hands," US Marine Corps Major General Richard Mills said.
The targeting of Taliban's opium "treasury" and various steps to undermine the Taliban's opium profits has led to shortage of funds, he said. As a result, Mills said, he believes that local insurgency in Helmand has less than one-half of what they had last year in operating funds.

Five killed in suicide terror attack in Russia

MOSCOW: At least five people were killed and 39 injured early on Sunday in a suicide terror attack on a military unit in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, a law enforcement source said.
A suicide bomber detonated his car packed with explosives near Buinaksk town after ramming into the gates of the military unit, the source said.
Another source said 34 were injured and that many of them were in a serious condition.
Earlier the defence ministry put the toll at three and said 26 people were injured.
A second explosion took place in the town as investigators were heading to the site, but there were no casualties.
A defence ministry spokesman said the ministry has dispatched a special commission led by acting Southern Military District commander Maj. Gen. Alexander Galkin to the site of the terrorist attack.

BEIJING: Chinese foreign ministry's controversial statement describing Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir as "northern part of Pakistan" is missing in its web site, which provides transcript of all other questions and answers at the press briefing on Thursday.
This is seen in Indian diplomatic circles as an "important signal" suggesting that New Delhi should not read too much into the statement. External affairs minister S M Krishna has already voiced concern over the statement because it amounts to neglecting India's claims over all of Kashmir.
"The story that China has deployed its military in northern part of Pakistan is totally groundless and out of ulterior purpose," Jiang Yu, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said during Thursday briefing at the ministry. This part of the press conference details does not figure in the website, which usually records details of the briefings.

The editorial said that by making the remarks at a conference of police chiefs recently, Chidambaram has only exposed the "mentality" of Congress.
"...The 85 per cent Hindus of the country should now understand that their interests are not safe under the present government...Only a united Hindu power can defeat such anti-national conspiracies," it said.
It said the same Government shied away from linking terror with any particular community despite the role of "Islamic jehad" in the killing of scores of people.

Terrorists resurface in Peshawar suburbs

PESHAWAR: Terrorists have once again started their activities in Sheikhan area, a suburb of the provincial capital, and imposed a ban on shaving beards.
Locals told Daily Times on Saturday that all barbers in the area had closed down their shops after terrorists kidnapped a barber from the Sheikhan village, situated near Bara area of Khyber Agency.
“Terrorists kidnapped barber Ali Asghar two weeks ago. They released him only three days ago, with a warning that he would be killed if he restarted shaving beards in his shop,” said Muhammad Nasir, another barber in the area.
He said that all barbers in the area had now stopped shaving beards, as terrorists had threatened them with dire consequences for violating the ban.

100 more Indian fishermen to go home today

LAHORE: Hundred more Indian fishermen will be released today (Sunday) and leave for their homeland through the Joint CheckPost (JCP) Wahga after completion of their prison terms in Pakistan. They had been detained in the Malir Jail, Karachi along with 342 other Indian fishermen over charges of ‘illegal entry in Pakistani waters’. Two hundred and one Indian fishermen had already been released on August 31 and September 3 and the remaining 141 will be released on September 7. The South Asia Partnership Pakistan (SAP-PK) pressed upon the Indian government to release the Pakistani fishermen arrested after illegally crossing over into the Indian territory.

8 children born at relief camps in a day

KARACHI: At least eight babies were born at different relief camps in the city on Saturday, while 50 patients were referred to various hospitals, focal person for IDPs medical camps Dr Khalid Bukhari said in a statement. There are eight camps in Gadap Town, and 1,366 patients were examined in their OPDs, where four babies were born, Bukhari said. In Bin Qasim Town there were 10 camps and 1,222 patients were checked while one delivery was reported, he said. He added that 468 people came to OPDs in two mobile camps in SITE area, and one baby was delivered. In Gulshan-e-Iqbal one baby was delivered and at least 305 patients reported at the four medical camps established in the town, the doctor said, adding another baby was born at one of the seven medical camps in Keamari Town, where 520 patients reported in the OPD. There is only one medical camp and one mobile camp in Korangi Town, where 27 patients were examined, Bukhari said.

Mohammed ElBaradei, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former U.N. nuclear chief, was quoted in the independent Al-Dustour newspaper as saying the government is ‘waging a campaign of sheer lies’ by using the photos to portray him and his family as nonbelievers - a politically damaging accusation in an increasingly conservative Muslim country.
The Facebook photos were an unusual personal attack on him and his family.

Mullen seeks Turkish support over Iran

ANKARA: The United States’ top military officer stressed on Saturday the need for Turkey to help enforce United Nations sanctions against Iran aimed at deterring the Islamic Republic from obtaining a nuclear bomb.
Turkey voted against the US-backed sanctions against Iran in June, insisting that its neighbour’s nuclear program is peaceful, despite fears that Tehran might be seeking to develop nuclear arms. Turkey has, however, stated that it will abide by the sanctions.
Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters in the Turkish capital he did not plan to “question or rebut” Turkey over the vote and welcomed Turkey’s stated intention to abide by those sanctions.

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the inter-provincial Council of Common Interests (CCI) called for Monday will chart a national flood relief strategy and could revisit a stalled opposition proposal for an independent commission, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told the National Assembly on Saturday.
Speaking in a debate on the flood devastation, he foresaw a long but a successful struggle to turn a natural calamity into what he called an “opportunity for a better reconstruction of the country”.
Apparently buoyed by a unanimous pro-democracy resolution passed by the house on Friday as a snub to perceived detractors of the present democratic system, he reiterated the 2-1/2-year-old PPP-led coalition government’s policy of national reconciliation, vowing to take along all political forces to face the situation and ensure transparency in the use of domestic resources and international aid for the relief and rehabilitation of an estimated 20 million flood sufferers.

Journalist kidnapped, tortured by 12 men

ISLAMABAD: A journalist was kidnapped and released here on Saturday by a group of 12 men who subjected him to torture and shaved his head.
The journalist, Omar Cheema of The News, told Dawn he suspected that an intelligence agency was behind the episode.
Two vehicles, a Land Cruiser and a Toyota Corolla, intercepted him near Kachnar Park in I-8/3 at 3.30 in the morning, he said, adding that 12 men got off the vehicles and surrounded him.
They alleged that he (Cheema) had hit and killed a man at Zero Point and ran away from the spot. Later, he was handcuffed, blindfolded and dragged to one of the vehicles.
Mr Cheema said the men took him to a house, at a distance of 30-45 minutes drive from the park. He said he was stripped and forcibly laid down on the floor. The abductors subjected him to torture and shaved his head.

Special operations on show to woo Afghan war sceptics

KABUL: The new top commander in Afghanistan is talking up a weapon that has been kept in the shadows for years – special operations missions to kill or capture key insurgents – to try to convince sceptics the war can be won.
More than previous commanders, Gen David Petraeus has released the results of special operations missions – 235 militant leaders were killed or captured in the last 90 days, another 1,066 rank-and-file insurgents killed and 1,673 detained – to demonstrate the Taliban and their allies are also suffering losses as Nato casualties rise.
Petraeus told reporters travelling on Friday with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, that in the past 24 hours, special operations forces carried out eight missions, capturing three targeted individuals. Four more were believed killed or detained, Petraeus said. Accentuating the positive is part of Petraeus’ media style, developed when he commanded US forces in Iraq and was widely credited with helping turn the tide in that war.

ISLAMABAD, Sept 4: The report formulated by Justice (retd) Kazim Malik on the lynching of two young brothers in Sialkot has not just highlighted the violence prevalent in society. Rather, by pointing out the ineffectiveness of the Police Order 2002 it has also drawn attention to the legal ambiguity surrounding the law.
“The Police Order 2002 has not attended to the deficiencies in the legal framework of the police,” wrote Justice Malik in his report, saying that without building statutory checks on arbitrary exercise of powers of the police, no improvement could be expected in the system.

India test-fires Brahmos cruise missile

BHUBANESWAR: India on Sunday test-fired an advanced version of a supersonic cruise missile, officials said, as part of the country's drive to boost its defence system.
The Brahmos, which can travel at up to 2.8 times the speed of sound and has a range of 290 km (180 miles), was tested at a test range in the eastern state of Orissa.
“It was a fantastic test. It met all mission requirements,” S.P. Dash, director of the test range, told Reuters.
The Brahmos, named after India's Brahmaputra river and Russia's Moscow river, was developed by a joint venture between India's Defense Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyen.
“The missile flew in the designated complex trajectory including large manoeuvres and a steep dive,” a Brahmos spokesperson said.

Double suicide bombing kills eight in Baghdad: officials

BAGHDAD: A double suicide bombing killed eight people at an Iraqi defence ministry complex that three weeks ago was hit by a massive suicide attack which killed dozens, a health official said.
A suicide bomber blew up a minibus at the rear gate of the Rusafa Military Command headquarters in east Baghdad around 10:50 am (0750 GMT), said Major General Qassim Atta, a security forces spokesman in the capital.
A policeman told an AFP reporter at the blast site that a second suicide attacker, wearing an explosives-filled belt, then rushed on to the scene and blew himself up -- an account backed up by an interior ministry official.

Taliban threaten to disrupt Afghanistan election

KABUL: Afghanistan's Taliban said on Sunday they would attempt to derail elections this month and warned Afghans to boycott the vote, the first explicit threat against the poll by the hardline Islamists.

India, Pakistan to speed up Mumbai attacks trial

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has sought India’s cooperation to speed up the process to bring the culprits of the Mumbai attack to book, sources said.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik and his Indian counterpart P. Chidambaram in a telephonic conversation discussed matters relating to security and certain aspects of the ongoing trial of Mumbai blast accused in Pakistan.
Islamabad also urged India to help find a way to progress the trial in Pakistan of seven suspects linked to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which has strained ties between the rivals.
The suspects include the alleged mastermind of the attack on India’s financial capital, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Zarar Shah.
Delhi and Washington have both the LeT faction for the Mumbai attacks, which left 166 people dead.

MAKKAH: An additional force of 10,000 policemen have been posted on duty as the security departments geared up to guarantee total safety inside the Grand Mosque and smooth flow of traffic on the roads to the pilgrims and worshippers on the Night of Power, which is believed to fall on the 27 night of the Ramadan (the evening after 26 day of fasting).
Millions of pilgrims and worshipers across the world will spend the Night of Power at the Grand Mosque. On Friday itself more than 1.5 million worshippers were present in the Grand Mosque. The Night of Power is the peak of this month of worship. The Muslims attempt to do as much virtuous deeds and charity as possible on this night and the previous day.
Maj. Gen. Jaza Al-Amri, director of police at the Central Zone (the area surrounding the Grand Mosque), said the police pay special attention to ease the flow on the roads leading to the Central Zone and manage the crowding inside the mosque.
“The police plan is an extension of the Ramadan plan with some changes in the direction of traffic. We aim at removing all obstacles in front of the worshippers on the two nights of 27 of Ramadan and the Khatam Al-Qur’an (completion of the recitation of the Holy Qur’an),” he said.

Farzad Kamangar, Ali Haydarian, Farhad Vakili and Shirin Alam-Houli were members of the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which took up arms in 1984 for an ethnic homeland in southeast Turkey and northwest Iran.
The other man executed, Mehdi Eslamian, was involved in a mosque bombing in the central city of Shiraz in 2008 that killed 14 people, IRNA said.
"The five, including one woman, were hanged inside Tehran's Evin prison on Sunday morning ... They confessed carrying out deadly terrorist operations in the country in the past years," IRNA said.

Bahrain accuses Shiites of trying to topple govt

MANAMA, Barain: Bahrain's security agency accused 23 Shiite activists of forming a terrorist network aiming to topple the country's Sunni-dominated government, a defense lawyer and a senior lawmaker said Saturday.
Bahrain state TV had earlier broadcast pictures of the alleged leaders of the networks and official media said the activists had been charged.
But lawyer Mohammed Al-Tajir said prosecutors are still interrogating the men and have not yet pressed formal charges. Al-Tajir added that he has not been allowed to meet with any of his clients since they were arrested, some of them as early as Aug. 13.
Most of the activists were among some 250 Shiites who have been arrested in the past month over allegations of disrupting public security. The crackdown follows a series of violent Shiite-led protests accusing the government of discrimination.

Pilgrimage a distant dream for Yemenis

SANAA: Since 2006, Yemen has been on a blacklist of countries where pilgrimage visas are not issued for single men under 40 years of age due to a persistent problem with visa overstayers — people who come to the Kingdom ostensibly to perform pilgrimage but who remain to work illegally.
And for the fourth year in a row, Yemenis have expressed their dismay over this regulation, which requires men under 40 to be accompanied by a female relative and a letter from a guarantor saying he will pay SR15,000 if the sponsored pilgrim does not return to Yemen by the expiration date of the pilgrimage visa.
"I can't get the visa because I'm 27," said Omer Al-Tamimi, a university lecturer at a private university at the coastal city of Mukalla, who wanted to perform Umrah. "If their aim is to stop people from getting into the Kingdom, we share a long border and people can resort to illegal means (to enter the country)."

Shia clergy rebuke Iraq politicians over impasse

BAGHDAD - Iraq’s powerful mainstream Shia clergy made a rare political intervention on Friday, with a senior cleric publicly rebuking politicians for failing to form a government six months after an election.
The March 7 vote was inconclusive, with a cross-sectarian bloc led by former premier Iyad Allawi emerging with a two-seat lead over the State of Law alliance of incumbent Shia Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. Neither side has so far been able to build a large enough coalition to form a government.
“The delay by political blocs in reaching agreements to form the next Iraqi government has exceeded all reasonable limits,” said Shi’ite cleric Abdul-Mahdi al-Kerbalai, speaking during Friday prayers in the holy city of Kerbala.

Iran troops kill four Kurdish rebels

TEHRAN - Iranian security forces have killed four members of an outlawed Kurdish group in the western province of Kordestan, the hardline Kayhan newspaper reported on Saturday.
The four members of Komala — a banned leftist Kurdish group — had “entered the country for terrorist operations but were killed before they could do anything,” the report said.
It added that weapons and explosives had been seized from the group.
Western Iran, which has a sizeable Kurdish population, has seen deadly clashes in recent years between Iranian security forces and Kurdish rebel groups operating from bases in neighbouring Iraq.
In May, Iran hanged four Kurds, including a woman, after convicting them of membership in another outlawed Kurdish group, the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK).

Lashkar Militant Killed, Jawan Injured In Encounter In Poonch

A suspected militant of the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LeT) was killed and a jawan injured in a gunbattle in Poonch border district on Sunday morning, police said here on Sunday. On a specific information about the presence of a group of 3-4 militants, Rastriya Rifles (RR) troops and Police launched a search and cordon operation in Bhatti-Dar area of Mendhar tehsil early on Sunday morning, SSP, Poonch, Dr Manmohan Singh told PTI. During search operation, joint operation team came under heavy firing from militants, prompting troops to fire back resulting in a fierce gunbattle, he added. The injured jawan has been hospitalised. The body of the militant is yet to be recovered. Troops also launched a cordon and search operation to track down a group of militants in Alal forest belt of Thanamandi teshil in Rajouri district, police said.

1 Killed, Three Injured In Israeli Air Strikes

Israeli warplanes launched three strikes against the southern Gaza Strip, killing one, wounding three and leaving one more missing, Palestinian medical and security sources said.
Two raids targeted smuggling tunnels running under the border with Egypt at Rafah, wounding two people.
One of the tunnels collapsed, killing one person. Another person was missing and a third was seriously injured, witnesses said.
The other raid targeted a former base used by the armed wing of the Islamist movement Hamas that seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the three raids on Saturday, saying that one was aimed at "a tunnel dug in the direction of Israeli territory" for attacks across the border.
