‘Nation’s Army, Soldiers Bowing At PM’s Feet’, Says BJP MP Deputy CM, BJP Defends
TNN | May 17, 2025
BHOPAL: Even as BJP is battling the crisis triggered by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah’s comments on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a fresh controversy erupted Friday over a statement by deputy CM Jagdish Devda.
Thanking PM Narendra Modi while lauding the military’s courage in Op Sindoor, Devda said at a training programme for civil defence volunteers in Jabalpur Friday: “Yashaswi Pradhan Mantriji Ko Hum Dhanyawad Dena Chahenge. Aur Poora Desh, Desh Ki Woh Sena, Woh Sainik, Unke Charno Mein Natmastak Hain. Unke Charno Mein Poora Desh Natmastak Hain. Unhone Jo Jawab Diya Hai, Uski Jitni Sarahna Ki Jaye, Jitni Kaha Jaye Utna Kam Hai.” The dispute is over Devda using the words ‘unke charno mein’. While Congress claimed Devda meant the ‘PM’s feet’, BJP said he meant the Army’s feet.
BJP, which is on a defensive after Shah’s remark, stoutly defended Devda, with IT cell chief Amit Malviya alleging that Congress is targeting the deputy CM because he is a Dalit. “Congress is unable to accept that a Dalit leader holds such a prominent position,” he said. “Deliberately distorting Devda ji’s statement is an attempt to create sensation and an atmosphere of lies,” Malviya tweeted. Devda warned of legal action, saying: “My speech is being presented in a wrong and distorted manner, which is absolutely improper. I said that the courage shown by the Army in conducting Operation Sindoor against terrorists cannot be praised enough. The entire country and the people of the country bow at their feet and salute them. I too salute them.” Devda defended himself by saying: “What I meant was people of the country
Sack Devda & Vijay Shah, demands Congress
Slamming MP deputy CM Jagdish Devda for allegedly saying that defence forces and its soldiers are at PM Modi’s feet and state minister Vijay Shah for his comments about Colonel Qureshi, Congress Friday said the BJP netas should be sacked from state govt without delay, else their utterances would be seen as having the approval of Modi and the BJP brass.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said comments from BJP politicians are tantamount to sedition but BJP is going all out to protect them, and the MP CM has already ruled out action against Shah. She asked how could Devda say “defence forces are at the PM’s feet” when they are responsible for maintaining peace, and when the country is full of respect for the way they stunned Pakistan in the recent face-off.
“These words are like committing a sin and BJP is doing it time and again,” Shrinate told reporters. “An apology or regret will not work this time. Devda has to be sacked. BJP cannot be a bystander this time.”

Taliban Push To Normalise Relations With India: “There Is A Consistent Conversation Between Indian And Taliban Officials”: Source

-----------
NEW DELHI: The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan is making a fresh push to normalise relations with India as part of its broader campaign for international legitimacy, sources familiar with the development said.
Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s phone call with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday was the highest-level contact between New Delhi and the Taliban since the group seized power in August 2021.
“The phone call, which took place ahead of Muttaqi’s scheduled visits to Iran and China, signals Kabul’s growing interest in re-engaging India on critical bilateral issues,” said a source.
These include trade facilitation, visa processes, the repatriation of Afghan prisoners, and strengthening collaboration on the strategic Chabahar port — a key project that India has backed to enhance regional connectivity and help landlocked Afghanistan gain sea access, bypassing Pakistan.
“There is a consistent conversation between Indian and Taliban officials,” pointed out a source.
This includes a meeting between Muttaqi and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Dubai in January, and a recent visit to Kabul by an Indian diplomat overseeing Afghanistan relations, shortly after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
Taliban officials strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and dismissed Pakistani military reports alleging Indian missile strikes on Afghan soil as “baseless.”
These efforts are seen as part of a broader Taliban effort to distance itself from regional instability and present a more responsible image on the world stage.
Beyond India, Muttaqi’s upcoming diplomatic calendar underscores the Taliban’s expanding regional outreach. He is expected to visit Tehran and Beijing in the coming weeks as the group seeks both recognition and economic engagement.
In January, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made a rare trip to Kabul — the first by a top Iranian diplomat in nine years. The visit marked a turning point in Afghan-Iranian relations, which had previously been strained.
Talks in Kabul focused on security, trade, and the possibility of a comprehensive bilateral cooperation agreement. While Tehran has not formally recognised the Taliban government, both sides have moved toward a more pragmatic and cooperative relationship since 2021.
China has invited Muttaqi for an official visit in May. The invitation followed discussions between Muttaqi and China’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Yue Xiaoyong, where both sides explored deeper political and economic ties.
The Taliban’s foreign ministry said China reaffirmed its support at international forums and expressed a strong interest in boosting trade and investment in Afghanistan.
“China assured its continued backing of the Islamic Emirate in global platforms,” the ministry said, using the Taliban’s official name for their government.
The China trip would be another milestone in the Taliban’s effort to gain international acceptance, following Beijing’s decision in February to formally accept the credentials of a Taliban-appointed ambassador — the first country to do so.

Arab League summit kicks off in Baghdad with Gaza at the top of the agenda
May 17, 2025

-----------
BAGHDAD: Regional leaders were to meet in Baghdad on Saturday at the annual summit of the Arab League, with the war in Gaza expected to once again loom large.
In March, at an emergency summit in Cairo, Arab leaders endorsed a proposed plan for reconstruction of the Gaza Strip without displacing its roughly 2 million residents.
Saturday’s summit comes two months after after Israel ended a ceasefire reached with the Hamas militant group in January. In recent days, Israel has launched widespread attacks in Gaza and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a further escalation of force to pursue his aim of destroying Hamas.
The Baghdad meeting was upstaged by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tour in the region earlier in the week. Trump’s visit did not usher in a deal for a new ceasefire in Gaza as many had hoped, but he grabbed headlines by meeting with new Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa — who had once fought against U.S. forces in Iraq — and promising to remove U.S. sanctions imposed on Syria.
Al-Sharaa was not attending the summit in Baghdad, where Syria’s delegation was headed by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani. Iraqi Shiite militias and political factions are wary of al-Sharaa’s past as a Sunni militant and had pushed back against his invitation to the summit.
Formerly known by the nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, al-Sharaa joined the ranks of al-Qaida insurgents battling U.S. forces in Iraq after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 to oust Saddam Hussein and still faces a warrant for his arrest on terrorism charges in Iraq.
During Syria’s conflict that began in March 2011, several Iraqi Shiite militias fought alongside the forces of former Syrian President Bashar Assad, making al-Sharaa today a particularly sensitive figure for them.
Iraq, which has strong — and sometimes conflicting — ties with both the United States and Iran, has sought to strike a difficult balance between them and to position itself as a regional mediator.
An Iraqi political official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, said that Iran’s Quds Force commander Esmail Ghaani had paid a visit to Baghdad prior to the summit and “conveyed messages of support for the Iranian-American negotiations” for a nuclear deal and a demand for the lifting of crippling sanctions on Iran.

How Saudi Arabia is safeguarding biodiversity by restoring its ancient juniper forests
SULAFA ALKHUNAIZI
May 16, 2025
Thriving in various environments, these steadfast evergreens embody the essence of the area’s ecosystem. (SPA)
-----------
RIYADH: High in the misty mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia, the juniper tree — known locally as the “lady of trees” — has long stood as a quiet sentinel over the Kingdom’s highland ecosystems.
Revered for its resilience, ecological role, and cultural legacy, this ancient species is now the focus of a national conservation drive to reverse decades of environmental decline.
Juniper woodlands flourish between 2,500 and 3,000 meters above sea level in regions such as Taif, Al-Baha, and Asir.
These evergreen conifers, draped in needles and peppered with cones, are more than just picturesque. They are ecological relicts — living remnants of ancient Afromontane forests that once stretched across parts of Arabia.
“Juniper trees have created a unique microclimate in areas where arid and semi-arid ecosystems such as deserts, mountains, and high plains are prevailing,” Liubov Kobik, a junior environmental consultant at Terra Nexus, told Arab News.
These woodlands offer a rare sanctuary for biodiversity in a country better known for its deserts.
“These areas are nowadays called juniper woodlands and are considered as biodiversity hotspots supporting thousands of vascular plants, unique and mammalian species,” Kobik added.
The forests are home to rare and endangered species such as the Arabian leopard, hamadryas baboon, and the endemic Asir magpie.
Ecologically, junipers stabilize mountain slopes, protect against soil erosion, and offer nesting and foraging habitats for a wide range of species. Their berries are a food source for wildlife, while their dense canopy helps retain moisture and moderate temperatures.
“Unlike most of Saudi Arabia, the Asir mountains receive relatively high levels of rainfall, particularly during the summer monsoon season,” Kobik said.
“This moisture supports a variety of vegetation types, from dry acacia woodlands at lower altitudes to more humid and dense juniper forests in the highlands.”
But these vital ecosystems are under threat. Long-term climate change, rising temperatures, and erratic rainfall have caused a decline in juniper populations.”
Rising temperatures and periodic droughts … are caused by climate change, resulting in reduced and increasingly erratic rainfall patterns, characterized by extended dry seasons and infrequent yet more intense storms,” Kobik said.
“This disruption in natural water availability hinders the establishment of young juniper seedlings, making successful regeneration increasingly uncommon,” she said. “Less rainfall and rising temperatures are increasing evaporation rates, drying out soil faster.
“This makes growing conditions tougher for seedlings and saplings, which struggle more with heat and drought compared to mature trees. Consequently, the natural replacement of older trees by new growth is greatly hindered.”
Overgrazing and land development have compounded the crisis. Livestock, particularly goats and sheep, often trample young saplings before they have a chance to mature.
In response, Saudi Arabia is taking action. Soudah Development, a project backed by the Public Investment Fund, has launched a major reforestation campaign that has planted nearly 165,000 native trees — including junipers — throughout the highlands.
“Additionally, Asir National Park, established in the 1980s, functions as a significant protected area where juniper forests are a conservation priority,” Kobik said.
“Within the park, measures are implemented to limit deforestation, overgrazing, and land development — factors that have historically led to the reduction of juniper populations.”
Kobik explained how authorities are partnering with the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification to promote regeneration.
“Park authorities … are undertaking habitat restoration initiatives that include fencing regeneration zones, controlling livestock access, and monitoring tree health,” she said.
“Protective fencing has been installed around the most sensitive zones to facilitate natural regeneration by preventing goats and sheep (or other livestock) from accessing the areas.
“These measures address a primary issue hindering juniper recovery: although seeds germinate, saplings often fail to mature due to browsing and trampling by animals.”
Beyond their environmental value, junipers hold deep cultural significance in Saudi Arabia. For generations, their wood has been used to craft ceremonial objects and household tools.
Their berries are used in traditional medicine to treat ailments such as colds and stomach issues. Juniper oil, prized for its natural fragrance, also finds its way into perfumes and soaps.
Once overlooked in the rush of modern development, these ancient trees are now being championed as symbols of sustainable progress.
By safeguarding juniper woodlands, Saudi Arabia is not only protecting its natural heritage — but also restoring life to its greenest, most storied mountains.

Massive Protest Rally Conducted In Karnataka's Belagavi Over Burning Of Islamic Scriptures
May 17, 2025
BELAGAVI: Tension gripped Belagavi on Friday evening, with thousands of members of the Muslim community gathering at Rani Channamma Circle to protest the alleged burning of Islamic scriptures-at a mosque in Santibastwad village recently.
The community organised a massive protest rally from Channamma Circle to DC's office and submitted a memorandum. Protesters demanded immediate arrest of the culprits who stole the copies of the holy books from an under-construction mosque and burnt them at a farmland nearby.
The protest rally, led by Belagavi North MLA Asif Sait, began after prayers at various mosques and Dargahs in the city in the afternoon, with people starting to flock to Channamma Circle. Protesters raised slogans and waved flags during the rally. They questioned the efficiency of the police department as it failed to arrest the culprits even after four days. The incident occurred on May 11. During an earlier protest, city police commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang had promised to arrest the accused within three days, but failed to do so, they said and demanded a thorough investigation and to expose who is behind the incident.
Due to the large gathering of protesters, traffic came to a standstill in many areas. Some youths blocked the roads, stating that they wouldn't disperse until the arrest of the culprits. A large number of police personnel were deployed at the protest spot to avoid untoward incidents. City police commissioner imposed Section 144 as a precautionary measure. Despite tension, the protest rally was peaceful.

India-Pakistan conflict: Maulana Azad National Urdu University junks MoU with Turkish institute
16.05.25
City-based Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has announced the cancellation of its academic memorandum of understanding with a Turkish institute, following the countr'ys support of Pakistan in the wake of tensions with India.
MANUU, a central university, announced cancelling the arrangement with Yunus Emre Institute, Turkiye for a diploma course, with immediate effect.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the varsity's registrar said the decision was taken in protest against Turkiye's "support" for Pakistan’s terrorist activities in the backdrop of India-Pakistan tensions.
The central university said it signed a MoU with the Turkish institute in 2020 for a period of five years under which a diploma in Turkish language was started at the School of languages, linguistics and Indology in MANUU.
A visiting professor who was appointed for the course has already returned to his country, the official informed.
Following Turkiye's support to Pakistan amid heightened tensions with India, multiple educational institutions here, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), have either suspended their collaboration with universities from there, or are considering such a move, officials had said recently.
Meanwhile, Azad United Students' Federation (AUSF) in a statement posted on social media said it strongly condemned the decisions of MANUU, JMI, and JNU to cancel or suspend their academic MoUs with institutions in the Republic of Turkiye.
India has never closed its doors to intellectual engagement, even in times of political strife. To use allegations of terrorism or political disagreements as a pretext to curb academic cooperation undermines the very spirit of higher education and international understanding, the statement further read.
"The fight against terrorism must not become a fight against academic freedom. Suspending scholarly ties in the name of nationalism not only damages our global academic standing but also risks transforming our universities into ideological outposts that echo the narrow vision of authoritarian forces,” it said.
The students' body demanded the immediate reversal of the decisions and urged academic institutions to uphold the values of free inquiry and global academic cooperation.
"Let our universities remain centers of knowledge, not echo chambers of political propaganda," it added.

Expecting overnight transformation in J-K ‘unrealistic’: Farooq Abdullah
May 16, 2025
National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said it is “unrealistic” to expect his party-led government, formed last year, to bring overnight transformation in Jammu and Kashmir as the “developmental setbacks” of the last decade cannot be reversed instantly.
Addressing a gathering at the Reshi Gund area of Kralpora in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said the Omar Abdullah-led government has ushered in a transformative era of governance marked by the importance of active citizen engagement in shaping effective governance.
“The government’s mandate spans five years, and it is unrealistic to expect a newly formed administration to transform the region overnight. The developmental setbacks our region has endured over the past decade cannot be reversed in mere moments; there is no magic solution,” Abdullah said.
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have faced hardships over the last decades and reaffirmed that the government is fully committed to fulfilling all promises made in the party manifesto.
He said through ongoing concerted efforts and active public participation, the NC government has established a clear trajectory aimed at addressing these long-standing challenges.
The NC chief said, despite holding an absolute majority, the government is not resorting to unilateral decision-making.
“On the contrary, there is a strong commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that all voices are heard before policies are formulated. With this collaborative approach, I am confident that our region will regain its momentum. Our citizens will soon experience significant improvements across all fronts,” he said. — With Agencies Inputsh

CJI says ‘everybody wants name in newspapers’ as SC junks fresh pleas against Waqf Act
16 May 2025
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a couple of fresh petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, with Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai remarking, “Everybody wants his name to be in the newspapers.”
A bench comprising CJI Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih said it would take up the matter already listed for hearing on May 20. When one of the fresh petitions was mentioned, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, objected to it, saying there could not be an “endless stream” of pleas challenging the Act.
The counsel for the petitioner submitted that he had filed the petition on 8 April and had removed the defects pointed out by the apex court registry on 15 April, but the plea had not yet been listed for hearing.
“Everybody wants his name to be in the newspapers,” the CJI observed. When the lawyer requested that his plea be tagged along with the pending petitions, the bench said, “We will decide that matter.”
The bench promptly dismissed the petition. Another similar plea brought up later was also summarily rejected with the remark, “Dismissed.”
When the petitioner’s counsel sought permission to intervene in the pending matters, CJI Gavai responded: “We already have too many intervenors.”
On 17 April, the apex court had decided to hear only five of the total number of petitions filed before it. The bench said it would consider arguments on 20 May to pass interim directions on three key issues: the power to denotify properties declared as waqf by courts, waqf-by-user or waqf by deed.
The second issue raised by the petitioners pertains to the composition of state waqf boards and the Central Waqf Council. The petitioners contend that only Muslims should be members, excluding ex-officio positions.
The third issue concerns a provision which states that a waqf property will not be treated as such if the collector, after inquiry, determines that the property is government land.
On 17 April, the Centre assured the top court that it would neither denotify waqf properties, including “waqf by user”, nor make any appointments to the Central Waqf Council and state waqf boards until 5 May.
Subsequently, on 25 April, the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs filed a preliminary 1,332-page affidavit defending the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, and opposed any “blanket stay” by the court on “a law having presumption of constitutionality passed by Parliament.”

Operation Sindoor: Over 600 Pakistan drones killed by Army air defence units
May 17, 2025
NEW DELHI: Over 600 drones launched by Pakistan were simply swatted out of the sky while the rest were repelled by Army air defence (AD) units, which were swiftly deployed along the western front in the build-up to the launch of ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7, senior officers said on Friday.
More than 1,000 AD gun systems and 750 short and medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems, of all shapes and sizes, plugged into a wide array of radars, were mobilised in double-quick time. This ensured the multi-layered air defence network transformed from a peacetime posture to full operational readiness to thwart the multiple waves of drones unleashed by Pakistan during the four days of hostilities last week.
“The operation not only safeguarded vital military and civilian infrastructure but also shattered the myth of drone supremacy. It has shown that Indian boots on the ground, backed by indigenous technology and rigorous training, can defend the skies with unmatched precision,” a senior Army Air Defence (AAD) officer said.
Pakistan’s strategy of launching multiple drone swarms, many of them armed, were aimed to map and test India’s AD radar network as well as get the Indian armed forces to deplete their stockpiles of ammunition and missiles designed to take on hostile aerial threats. The Indian defence establishment was ready, having built adequate ammo reserves through regular and emergency procurements over the last five years due to the military confrontation with China in eastern Ladakh.
“Pakistan’s strategy was to overwhelm India’s integrated air defence grid, gather real-time intelligence, and target population centres, military assets and places of worship. But it failed spectacularly,” another officer said.
“We neither open up all our radars, nor keep them open round-the-clock, to ensure the adversary does not pick up electronic signatures. One also does not use the top-end Russian S-400 (interception range 380km) or Barak-8 MR-SAM (70km, jointly produced with Israel) AD systems against low-value targets like small drones,” he added.
Old ‘legacy’ AD weapons like L-70 anti-aircraft guns, ZU-23mm twin-barrel guns and upgraded Schilka, often underestimated in this era of high-tech warfare, proved their mettle in this arena. “They emerged as highly effective point defence systems against low-flying, hard-to-detect drone swarms,” he said.
The indigenous Akash AD missile systems, with an interception range of 25km, also played a major role in taking care of the bigger threats like aircraft, armed UAVs and the Turkish Byker Yiha III kamikaze drones.
Army deployed six nodes of its new indigenous Akashteer air defence control and reporting systems, which were fully plugged into IAF’s larger IACCS (integrated air command and control system) for a real-time composite air situation picture available to all commanders on the ground, as reported by TOI earlier.
“Akashteer’s digital backbone offered unmatched situational awareness and real-time command-and-control capabilities, enabling commanders to neutralise threats swiftly without risking friendly aerial platforms,” the officer said. The “sheer scale” of engagement, speed of deployment, and level of integration between sensors, shooters & networks across the Services is “a turning point” in India’s AD preparedness, he added.

Himachal farmers demand ban on apple imports from Turkey, meet Minister Piyush Goyal
May 17, 2025
Apple growers from Himachal Pradesh have demanded an immediate and complete ban on the import of apples from Turkey, after the Muslim country reportedly provided military assistance to Pakistan in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor and the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
Traders at Azadpur Mandi in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune also expressed their solidarity towards the demand for a ban on Turkish apples’ import.
A delegation of apple growers, under the banner of the Himalayan Apple Growers Society (HAGS), met Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Saturday to press for the ban and submitted a memorandum expressing grave concern over the rapidly increasing import of subsidised apples from Turkey, which they said is crippling the domestic horticulture economy.
“These cheap imports are undercutting Indian growers and pushing orchardists into deep financial losses. Many are struggling to even recover the cost of production,” Rajesh Dhanta, HAGS general secretary, said.
The delegation underscored that continuing trade with Turkey — a known ally of Pakistan — was not only crippling India’s economicy but also a matter of national security. “It is unacceptable for India to import produce from a country that supports a regime responsible for cross-border terrorism,” the memorandum read.
The growers emphasised that apples are not just a commercial crop but the economic backbone of hill states like Himachal Pradesh, sustaining the livelihoods of millions of farmers.
The delegation put forth three major demands, including a total ban on apple imports from Turkey; an increase in the Minimum Import Price (MIP) for apples from all countries, and strict enforcement of quality and phytosanitary standards to prevent the entry of diseases and pests through imported apples.
Union Minister Goyal assured the delegation that their concerns would be taken seriously and that appropriate action would follow.
Echoing the growers’ demand, Himachal Pradesh PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh and AICC spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Rathore have also called for a complete halt to Turkish apple imports. “We will continue to raise this issue until the government takes decisive action,” said Rajesh Dhanta, general secretary and media head of HAGS.

Uttar Pradesh politicians go all out to capitalise on ongoing caste and religion slugfest
Piyush Srivastava
17.05.25
Politicians in Uttar Pradesh are going all out to capitalise on the ongoing caste and religion slugfest involving the foreign secretary and the two women officers from the armed forces who were assigned the task of briefing the media during Operation Sindoor.
Samajwadi Party general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Ram Gopal Yadav on Friday reacted to a statement made by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on this issue without naming him.
Yadav posted on X: “In some north Indian states, especially Uttar Pradesh, fake cases are filed based on people’s caste and religion; encounters happen after verifying their caste and religion; individuals are booked under the Gangster Act, their properties seized, and atrocities are committed, all based on their caste and religion. Employees are even posted or transferred based on their caste and religion.
"I had earlier mentioned that there are people who cursed Colonel Sofiya (Qureshi) and foreign secretary (Vikram) Misri because they identified their religion and caste. Had they known their castes, they would also have cursed Wing Commander Vyomika Singh Jatav and Air Marshal Awadhesh Bharti Yadav. The BJP leaders assumed Vyomika Singh was a Rajput, and they didn’t know Bharti’s caste.”
Yadav had said in a public meeting in Moradabad on Thursday: “Vyomika Singh belongs to (he mentioned her specific Scheduled Caste) from Haryana. The BJP didn’t know her caste and so spared her but they targeted Sofiya Qureshi because she is a Muslim.”
Adityanath had responded to Yadav's remarks on Thursday on X: "We don’t view the army’s uniform through the lens of casteism. Every soldier of the Indian armed forces observes nationalism. They don’t represent any caste or religion...."

Rare Islamic artefacts to go on display in ‘a first’ for Huddersfield
Abigail Marlow
16 MAY 2025
Rare Islamic artefacts are to go on display tomorrow (May 17) in a first for Huddersfield.
A special exhibition is being held in Lockwood at the Unity Centre on Victoria Road, showcasing some pieces of Islamic history. The installation travels to different venues and was a major success at Batley Town Hall last month where over 3,500 people were in attendance.
The Kiswa - a 29-foot-long cloth made of pure silk, embroidered with Quranic verses in 22-carat gold and silver thread - is among the artefacts to be exhibited. The Kiswa is used to cover the Kaaba - the sacred, stone structure at the centre of the Great Mosque in Mecca - and is traditionally replaced every year during the Hajj pilgrimage on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah.
Also on display will be pieces from the tomb of Prophet Muhammad, relics from inside the Kaaba, the Kaaba’s original lock and key, and ceremonial tools used for its cleansing. Organisers say these items are so rare that even in Mecca and Medina they are not usually accessible to the public, with Operations Manager, Riyaz Maniar previously describing the event as a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.
Crosland Moor and Netherton ward councillor, Imran Safdar, who has helped to organise the exhibition’s stop in Huddersfield, said : “It was so delightful to work with my dear old family friend, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Sofia Buncy, and the hard working volunteer team at Masjid Ghausia to bring this unique exhibition to Huddersfield.
“I suggested bringing these items to Huddersfield but now they are finally on their way, I am feeling incredibly honoured.
“Not everyone can travel to Istanbul or indeed to Mecca or Medina to see such historical Islamic artefacts, so such an event coming to our town fills me and the Mosque volunteers with pride.
“I would like to thank the Kiswa team organisers for bringing this to Lockwood. We look forward to hosting people from all faiths and none to our Unity Hall in Lockwood.”
He added: “The engravings and the scripture on the cloths reiterate the message of peace.”

Regulator orders reform to governance at Islamic Centre of England
16 May 2025
The Order has been issued in the context of a finding of misconduct and / or mismanagement during the regulator’s ongoing inquiry into the charity, to address the charity’s previous failures and to ensure that its governance is improved for the future.
The move follows the appointment of two additional trustees at the charity – a centre of Islamic worship in north London – and the conclusion of extensive work by an Interim Manager appointed by the Commission to take temporary control of essential aspects of the charity’s running and to review its governance.
The regulator opened an inquiry into the Islamic Centre of England in November 2022 to investigate serious governance concerns. The Commission appointed the Interim Manager in May 2023 and, in parallel with her work, continued to investigate concerns about the running of the charity.
Breaches of previous advice and Orders
The Commission has taken regulatory action during the inquiry, which remains ongoing, on wide-ranging governance issues and breaches of previous advice and orders. These included more recently failure to fully comply with the Order appointing the Interim Manager and failure to fully comply with directions. The Commission considers these, and a range of other past breaches, mismanagement and misconduct in the administration of the charity. The trustees currently dispute some of these legal findings.
Section 84 Order
The Section 84 Order requires the trustees to take a range of actions to improve the charity’s operations, governance and financial oversight, with clear deadlines for compliance. Among these are that the trustees are instructed to ensure that all religious services, speakers and events further the objects of the charity and are in its best interests, complying with due diligence processes put in place by the Interim Manager. Similarly, the trustees are required to ensure the charity’s website and social media content is exclusively in furtherance of the charity’s purposes and that trustees and staff document their decisions appropriately. The Commission will continue to closely monitor the trustees’ compliance with these and other actions in the Order, and can take further regulatory action if the trustees fail to do so.
Changes to trustees
During the course of the Commission’s inquiry a requirement was removed from the charity’s governing document for one trustee to be the official UK religious representative of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the occupant left this role. This addressed regulatory concerns about the charity’s failure to manage the conflicts of interest and apparent lack of independence this caused, which were at odds with charity law.
Separately, the Interim Manager had overseen the appointment of the two new trustees and taken steps to improve the charity’s management and governance, particularly regarding speakers and events. The Commission has now discharged the Interim Manager, Emma Moody, after she implemented specific improvements asked of her by the Commission, with further improvements to be delivered by the trustees under the Order.
Charity Commission Chief Executive, David Holdsworth, said:
The law requires, and the public expect, charities to operate exclusively for the public benefit. The vast majority of charities do so successfully, making a difference every day. As this case shows, when a charity fails to operate in line with its legal duties we will step in to take action. We now expect the trustees to take the required action directed by the Commission and will not hesitate to use further legal powers should that be necessary.
The Commission’s statutory inquiry is ongoing. It is the Commission’s practice to publish a report setting out its findings, regulatory actions and conclusions once an inquiry has concluded.

Israel launches ‘initial stages’ of new Gaza operation: military
May 17, 2025
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said Saturday it had launched “extensive strikes” in the Gaza Strip over the past day as part of the “initial stages” of a fresh offensive on the besieged Palestinian territory.
The strikes were part of “the expansion of the battle in the Gaza Strip, with the goal of achieving all the war’s objectives, including the release of the abducted and the defeat of Hamas,” Israel’s army said in a statement in Arabic on Telegram.
Gaza’s civil defense agency earlier said Israeli strikes on Gaza had killed 100 people on Friday.
The offensive, known as “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” comes as Israel faces pressure to lift a sweeping aid blockade in return for a US-Israeli hostage released by Hamas.
Israel resumed its military offensive in Gaza on March 18 after a two-month truce in its war against Hamas, which was triggered by an attack by the Palestinian group in October 2023.
That assault resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
Of the 251 hostages taken during the attack, 57 remain in Gaza, including 34 the military says are dead.
The health ministry in the Hamas-run territory said 2,985 people have been killed since Israel resumed strikes on March 18, taking the war’s overall toll to 53,119.
Israeli media reported on Friday that the military had stepped up its offensive in line with a plan approved by the government earlier this month, though there had not been any formal announcement of an expanded campaign.
The military said its forces had “struck over 150 terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip” in 24 hours.

Microsoft says it provided AI to Israeli military for war but denies use to harm people in Gaza
May 17, 2025
WASHINGTON: Microsoft acknowledged Thursday that it sold advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing services to the Israeli military during the war in Gaza and aided in efforts to locate and rescue Israeli hostages. But the company also said it has found no evidence to date that its Azure platform and AI technologies were used to target or harm people in Gaza.
The unsigned blog post on Microsoft’s corporate website appears to be the company’s first public acknowledgement of its deep involvement in the war, which started after Hamas killed about 1,200 people in Israel and has led to the deaths of tens of thousands in Gaza.
It comes nearly three months after an investigation by The Associated Press revealed previously unreported details about the American tech giant’s close partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Defense, with military use of commercial AI products skyrocketing by nearly 200 times after the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The AP reported that the Israeli military uses Azure to transcribe, translate and process intelligence gathered through mass surveillance, which can then be cross-checked with Israel’s in-house AI-enabled targeting systems and vice versa.
The partnership reflects a growing drive by tech companies to sell their artificial intelligence products to militaries for a wide range of uses, including in Israel, Ukraine and the United States. However, human rights groups have raised concerns that AI systems, which can be flawed and prone to errors, are being used to help make decisions about who or what to target, resulting in the deaths of innocent people.
Microsoft said Thursday that employee concerns and media reports had prompted the company to launch an internal review and hire an external firm to undertake “additional fact-finding.” The statement did not identify the outside firm or provide a copy of its report.
The statement also did not directly address several questions about precisely how the Israeli military is using its technologies, and the company declined Friday to comment further. Microsoft declined to answer written questions from The AP about how its AI models helped translate, sort and analyze intelligence used by the military to select targets for airstrikes.
The company’s statement said it had provided the Israeli military with software, professional services, Azure cloud storage and Azure AI services, including language translation, and had worked with the Israeli government to protect its national cyberspace against external threats. Microsoft said it had also provided “special access to our technologies beyond the terms of our commercial agreements” and “limited emergency support” to Israel as part of the effort to help rescue the more than 250 hostages taken by Hamas on Oct. 7.
“We provided this help with significant oversight and on a limited basis, including approval of some requests and denial of others,” Microsoft said. “We believe the company followed its principles on a considered and careful basis, to help save the lives of hostages while also honoring the privacy and other rights of civilians in Gaza.”
The company did not answer whether it or the outside firm it hired communicated or consulted with the Israeli military as part of its internal probe. It also did not respond to requests for additional details about the special assistance it provided to the Israeli military to recover hostages or the specific steps to safeguard the rights and privacy of Palestinians.
In its statement, the company also conceded that it “does not have visibility into how customers use our software on their own servers or other devices.” The company added that it could not know how its products might be used through other commercial cloud providers.
In addition to Microsoft, the Israeli military has extensive contracts for cloud or AI services with Google, Amazon, Palantir and several other major American tech firms.
Microsoft said the Israeli military, like any other customer, was bound to follow the company’s Acceptable Use Policy and AI Code of Conduct, which prohibit the use of products to inflict harm in any way prohibited by law. In its statement, the company said it had found “no evidence” the Israeli military had violated those terms.
Emelia Probasco, a senior fellow for the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University, said the statement is noteworthy because few commercial technology companies have so clearly laid out standards for working globally with international governments.
“We are in a remarkable moment where a company, not a government, is dictating terms of use to a government that is actively engaged in a conflict,” she said. “It’s like a tank manufacturer telling a country you can only use our tanks for these specific reasons. That is a new world.”
Israel has used its vast trove of intelligence to both target Islamic militants and conduct raids into Gaza seeking to rescue hostages, with civilians often caught in the crossfire. For example, a February 2024 operation that freed two Israeli hostages in Rafah resulted in the deaths of 60 Palestinians. A June 2024 raid in the Nuseirat refugee camp freed four Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity but resulted in the deaths of at least 274 Palestinians.
Overall, Israel’s invasions and extensive bombing campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of more than 50,000 people, many of them women and children.
No Azure for Apartheid, a group of current and former Microsoft employees, called on Friday for the company to publicly release a full copy of the investigative report.
“It’s very clear that their intention with this statement is not to actually address their worker concerns, but rather to make a PR stunt to whitewash their image that has been tarnished by their relationship with the Israeli military,” said Hossam Nasr, a former Microsoft worker fired in October after he helped organize an unauthorized vigil at the company’s headquarters for Palestinians killed in Gaza.
Cindy Cohn, executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, applauded Microsoft Friday for taking a step toward transparency. But she said the statement raised many unanswered questions, including details about how Microsoft’s services and AI models were being used by the Israeli military on its own government servers.
“I’m glad there’s a little bit of transparency here,” said Cohn, who has long called on US tech giants to be more open about their military contracts. “But it is hard to square that with what’s actually happening on the ground.”

Israel blasts UN aid chief over call to prevent Gaza genocide
May 16, 2025
UNITED NATIONS: Israel on Friday blasted the United Nations aid chief for asking the UN Security Council if it would act to “prevent genocide” in the Gaza Strip, where experts say famine looms after Israel blocked aid deliveries to the Palestinian enclave 75 days ago.
While briefing the 15-member body earlier this week, UN aid chief Tom Fletcher said: “Will you act – decisively – to prevent genocide and to ensure respect for international humanitarian law?“
In a letter to Fletcher on Friday, Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon accused him of delivering “a political sermon” and weaponizing the word genocide against Israel, questioning under what authority he made what Israel viewed as an accusation.
“You had the audacity, in your capacity as a senior UN official, to stand before the Security Council and invoke the charge of genocide without evidence, mandate, or restraint,” he wrote. “It was an utterly inappropriate and deeply irresponsible statement that shattered any notion of neutrality.”
A spokesperson for Fletcher did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter.
Under international law, genocide is an intent to destroy, in whole or part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. This includes through killings, serious bodily or mental harm and inflicting conditions calculated to bring about physical destruction.
The war in Gaza was triggered on October 7, 2023, when Palestinian militants Hamas killed 1,200 people in southern Israel and took some 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 53,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.
Israel has accused Hamas of stealing aid, which the group denies, and has blocked all aid to Gaza since March 2, demanding Hamas release all remaining hostages.
A global hunger monitor warned on Monday that half a million people face starvation — about a quarter of the population in the enclave.
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that “a lot of people are starving in Gaza.”

Council of Europe: Israel sowing ‘the seeds for the next Hamas’ in Gaza
May 16, 2025
STRASBOURG: The Council of Europe on Friday said Gaza was suffering from a “deliberate starvation,” and warned that Israel was sowing “the seeds for the next Hamas” in the territory.
“The time for a moral reckoning over the treatment of Palestinians has come — and it is long overdue,” said Dora Bakoyannis, rapporteur for the Middle East at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The 46-member Council of Europe works to safeguard human rights and democracy.
“No cause, no matter how just or pure, can ever justify every means,” Bakoyannis said in a statement.
“The mass killing of children and unarmed civilians, the deliberate starvation, and the relentless pain and humiliation inflicted upon Palestinians in Gaza must end.”
Since March 2, Israeli forces have blocked all humanitarian aid from entering Gaza for its 2.4 million inhabitants, now threatened with famine, according to several NGOs.
Bakoyannis said that “it takes a smart and brave nation to recognize when its actions are causing more harm than good. What is unfolding in Gaza helps no-one.”
Breaking a two-month ceasefire, Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, with the declared goal of obtaining the release of all hostages still held in Gaza.
Israeli retaliations have caused at least 53,010 deaths in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, considered reliable by the UN.
The UK government has meanwhile defended supplying fighter jet parts to Israel, telling a London court that suspending exports would compromise Britain’s security and damage relations with Israel and allies.
Government lawyer James Eadie said the UK’s trade department had acted lawfully and that suspending the export licences would have affected a wider international F-35 program, resulting in “extremely serious risks to the UK and international security.”
He added the court was not placed to rule on the legality of Israel’s actions, and that attempting to do so could have a “potentially deleterious” effect on “foreign relations with a friendly state, namely Israel.”

Israel threatens Houthi leaders after striking Yemen ports
May 16, 2025
HODEIDA Yemen: Israel threatened to target the leadership of Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis after the air force struck two Yemeni ports on Friday, following repeated Houthi missile attacks in recent days.
The Houthis agreed earlier this month to stop firing on international shipping in the Red Sea after the United States stepped up air strikes on Houthi-held areas with British support.
But the Houthis vowed to keep up their strikes on Israel despite the deal and fired three missiles in as many days this week that triggered air raid warnings in major cities.
The Houthis’ Al-Masirah television reported strikes on the Red Sea port city of Hodeida, a key entry point for aid, as well as the port of Salif further north, without immediately mentioning any casualties.
Israel’s military confirmed striking the two ports, saying it “dismantled terrorist infrastructure sites” belonging to the Iran-backed Houthis.
It noted that prior warnings had been issued to civilians in both areas.
“These ports are used to transfer weapons and are a further example of the Houthi terrorist regime’s systematic and cynical exploitation of civilian infrastructure in order to advance terrorist activities,” a military statement said.
The Houthis, who have controlled large swathes of Yemen for more than a decade, began firing at Israel-linked shipping in November 2023, weeks after the start of the Israel-Hamas war.
They later broadened their campaign to target Israel, saying it was in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the Houthi leadership there was “more to come” after Friday’s strikes.
“We are not willing to sit on the sidelines and let the Houthis attack us. We will hit them far more, including their leadership and all the infrastructure that allows them to hit us,” Netanyahu said in a video statement.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Houthi leaders that if the missile attacks continue, they face the same fate as Hamas leaders slain by Israel in Gaza.
“If the Houthis continue to fire, we will also hit the heads of the terror groups, just as we did to (slain Hamas military chief Mohammed) Deif and (the) Sinwars (Hamas Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar and his brother Mohammed Sinwar) in Gaza,” Katz said in a post.
“We will also hunt down and eliminate the Houthi leader, Abd Al-Malek Al-Houthi.”
In early May, a Houthi missile struck an area at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport, gouging a hole near its main terminal building and wounding several people in a rare penetration of Israeli air defenses.
Israel retaliated by striking the airport in Yemen’s Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa and three nearby power stations.
The UN special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said the exchange marked a “dangerous escalation” and was a reminder that the war-torn country is “ensnared in the wider regional tensions.”

Calls in Quds for mobilization and presence at Al-Aqsa Mosque
16 May 2025
Calls have been issued in Quds for a mobilization and presence at Al-Aqsa Mosque, and for confronting the attempts of the Zionist enemy and its settlers to impose a new settlement reality on the mosque and its courtyards.
Calls have intensified to increase the presence and protect Al-Aqsa Mosque from the increasing threats to it, in light of the Zionist enemy forces' restrictions on worshippers and Palestinians and their facilitation of settler incursions.
This Friday morning, Zionist enemy forces obstructed the entry of Palestinians to Al-Aqsa Mosque for Friday prayers, imposing strict restrictions that included inspections and identity checks.

Spotlight on technology at Riyadh project management forum
GHADI JOUDAH
May 16, 2025
RIYADH: The three-day Global Project Management Forum 2025 opens here on Saturday titled “Next-Gen Project Management: The Power of People, Processes, and Technology.”
Held under the patronage of Majid Al-Hogail, minister of municipalities and housing, the GPMF brings together government officials, industry pioneers, innovators, and global thought leaders.
Badr Burshaid, chairman of the forum, told Arab News: “Artificial intelligence is no longer a future trend it is now one of the most transformative forces in project management.”
He said the forum would showcase live demonstrations of AI tools.
This includes predictive analytics, which McKinsey estimates can boost project efficiency by 30 percent, alongside real-time resource optimization systems, he said.
These innovations, he noted, are already shifting workflows across industries.
“By 2030, Gartner predicts that 80 percent of project management functions will be supported or led by AI,” Burshaid said.
“AI is not here to replace human leadership — it is here to enhance it,” he added.
Burshaid highlighted digital twin technology as a game-changer, citing its role in saving “hundreds of millions in maintenance costs” for projects such as London’s Crossrail.
Hybrid governance models blending agile and predictive approaches, he added, are becoming critical in today’s complex project landscapes.
On the GPMF’s global influence, he said: “These conversations aren’t theoretical — they’re catalytic. GPMF is not just responding to change; it is architecting it.”
“Developing future talent is a strategic imperative at GPMF 2025,” Burshaid added.
The forum’s initiatives include the Project Management Challenge, where students solve real-world problems, and partnerships with universities to align education with industry needs.
He emphasized that “talent cultivation is not aspirational — it’s operational,” pointing to certifications and mentorship programs as proof of the GPMF’s commitment.
Burshaid linked the forum’s agenda to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, noting that Project Management Offices remain pivotal in turning national goals into results.
Case studies from Saudi Arabia’s mega-projects would demonstrate how digital tools and performance-monitoring drive progress.
“GPMF doesn’t just reflect Vision 2030, it propels it forward,” he said.
Addressing tensions between automation and human judgment, Burshaid argued that “technology can accelerate processes, but only people can provide vision, context, and values.”
Sessions at the event including “Leadership Under Pressure” would guide professionals in balancing AI tools with ethical oversight and empathy.
“GPMF stands for a future in which innovation is deeply human-centric,” he added.
Burshaid issued a rallying call: “From Riyadh, we’re not only reimagining project management — we’re raising the standard for how nations and leaders deliver transformation.”

CAIR-LA Condemns Qur’an Desecration Posted to UCLA Reddit Page, Demands University Administration Address Rising Islamophobia on Campus
May 16, 2025
The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today condemned the desecration of a Qur’an, Islam’s sacred text, by an individual posted to a Reddit page for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). It also echoed calls by the UCLA Muslim Student Association (MSA) to address the alarming rise of Islamophobia on campus.
On Thursday, May 15, several posts were reportedly made to the r/UCLA Reddit page that included anti-Islam rhetoric, including an unnamed individual stepping on a copy of the Qur’an, ripping out pages, and flushing them down the toilet while allegedly calling on students to take part. The posts were made by multiple anonymous accounts but appear to show the same individual.
An unidentified individual was also reportedly seen on campus, allegedly shouting inflammatory remarks at students participating in a pro-Palestinian demonstration at Dickson Court North, including “Islam teaches to kill the infidels” and equating Islam with terrorism. It is not confirmed whether this individual is affiliated with UCLA or if the incident was connected to the online posts.
The UCLA MSA called on university leadership to address the recent incident and the broader rise of Islamophobia on campus over the past year.
In an emailed statement to university leadership, the UCLA MSA said:
“Muslim students have also reported being called ‘terrorists,’ ‘baby-killers,’ and ‘rapists’ among other comments by both students and non-university affiliates over the past couple of months. This kind of rhetoric, when amplified online, fuels harmful stereotypes and legitimizes bigotry, making Muslim students even more vulnerable to targeted harassment and violence. It creates a dangerous narrative that dehumanizes an entire community, fostering an environment of fear and alienation on campus.
“We … ask that the university release a public statement acknowledging the rise in Islamophobic incidents, reaffirming its commitment to protecting Muslim students, and outlining immediate steps being taken to ensure their safety and well-being.”
In a statement, CAIR-LA Civil Rights Managing Attorney Dina Chehata, Esq., said:
“The disturbing actions, including desecrating the Qur’an, are not isolated acts. This is part of a broader pattern of unchecked Islamophobia that the UCLA administration has failed to address, undermining the safety and sense of belonging for Muslim students on campus. Leadership is quick to criminalize those who speak in support of Palestinian human rights, responding to peaceful protests with militarized police forces, but continues to turn a blind eye to Islamophobia happening on campus.
“UCLA failed to protect its students against violence from pro-Israel extremists and law enforcement last spring, and by staying silent, it will continue to fail its students and further embolden anti-Muslim rhetoric and hate. Immediate, decisive action is needed to prevent further harm to students.”
Islamophobia and harassment targeting Muslim students have increased on college campuses statewide. CAIR California’s recent Campus Climate Report found that 49% of Muslim college students across California experienced harassment or discrimination due to their Muslim identity and that 65% of schools failed to address significant issues impacting Muslim students.
In August 2024, CAIR and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee designated UCLA as an “institution of particular concern” due to its creation of a hostile campus environment for Palestinian, Muslim, Arab, and Jewish students, staff, and faculty opposing Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
The UCLA Taskforce on Anti-Palestinian, Anti-Arab, & Anti-Muslim Racism has issued three reports outlining the pattern of targeted discrimination and harassment of UCLA students and faculty speaking on Palestine and offered several recommendations, which UCLA has reportedly ignored.
CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.

LA mosque vandalized again, LAPD investigating as hate crime
May 16, 2025
LOS ANGELES - A man was caught on camera vandalizing a local mosque in Koreatown this week. Now, police are investigating the most recent case of vandalism as a hate crime. The incident has united faith leaders from across the community, standing in solidarity to condemn the hateful act.
What we know:
It happened on Saturday, May 10, at the Islamic Center of Southern California. Surveillance video captured the man spray-painting a wall, tree and fence at the mosque.
The messages featured the word "God," and the Star of David. A spokesperson for the mosque said the messaging appears to be a reference to Israel and the war in Gaza.
"It transforms it from being a symbol of faith, goodness [and] righteousness, which is what we should all know it by, and it goes through a transformation," said Omar Ricci. "That effectively conveys, and what we felt when we saw it, that ‘We’re coming for you.' That, ‘we’re coming for this mosque.'"
The man in the video sprayed other symbols and the names of multiple Japanese companies. While the Los Angeles Police Department said it's still working to determine the meaning of all the messages, Chief Jim McDonnell said the department is investigating the incident as a hate crime.
The mosque is no stranger to vandalism like this. In April 2023, another man was seen on camera, spraying anti-Muslim messages on the wall. It's unclear if anyone was ever arrested in connection with that incident.
Hate crimes reached an all-time high in Los Angeles County in 2023, reaching numbers the President of the county Human Relations Commission called "unprecedented." The most common hate crimes were based on race, ethnicity or national origin, according to the report, with religion-based crimes, particularly against Jewish people and Muslims, coming closely behind. Hate crimes in LA County in 2023 jumped nearly 50% from the year before.
While the LAPD tells FOX 11 that hate crimes targeting houses of worship have roughly steadied this year, leaders from many other religious communities gathered at the Islamic Center on Friday to stand in unity and condemn hate.
What they're saying:
David Myers, professor of Jewish History at UCLA, said that it's important to stand against hate, no matter the target.
"It's hard in this current moment to be reminded of the common spiritual roots that bind us together, but it's also important to note that hate against one group will spill over into hate against another group," Myers said. "Islamophobia and anti-Semitism are related. They rise and fall in unison."
Salam Al-Marayati of the Muslim Public Affairs Council called the vandalism an effort to try and "split the Jewish and Muslim community here, and they will not succeed."
What's next:
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office tells FOX 11 that until a suspect is identified and the investigation is complete, they won't be able to determine whether hate crime charges can be filed.

Police seek vandal who spray-painted graffiti at Islamic Center of Southern California
May 16, 2025
Police are looking for a vandal who defaced a wall, columns and tree in what authorities called a hate crime at the Islamic Center of Southern California.
The vandalism happened sometime between 5:45 a.m. and noon on Sunday at the religious center northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Graffiti depicting religious and other symbols was spray-painted on the wall, column and trees, officials with the Islamic Center said.
"We have an act of vandalism against a house of worship, and that takes us into 594.3, subdivision A," said Paul Kim, of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, referring to California penal code for vandalism against a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, building owned and occupied by a religious educational institution, or other places primarily used as a place of worship.
The LAPD issued a Crime Alert with security camera photos of a man sought in connection with the vandalism. The man, 20 to 25 years old, has tattoos on his right arm and was wearing a red hair band, black t-shirt, blue jeans and white shoes, police said.
Security camera video showed someone spray-painting the wall, at least two columns and a tree in front of the center.
"We are grateful to LAPD for their swift and serious response, and we remain in close communication with city officials as this investigation continues," the center said in a statement Tuesday. "As a house of worship, the Islamic Center of Southern California has always strived to be a space of refuge, dignity, and community for all Angelenos. We are deeply saddened by this act, but not deterred."
"To our daily congregants, families, students, and visitors -- your safety and peace of mind are paramount. We understand that incidents like this may cause concern, fear, or even strong emotions such as anger or grief, especially for those who come to ICSC for prayer, learning, or a sense of belonging… Please know that enhanced safety measures are in place, and we are working closely with law enforcement to ensure that our campus remains a secure and welcoming space for all."
Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Greater Los Angeles Office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, condemned the crime as "not just an attack on a house of faith," but also an "assault on the values of diversity and tolerance."

US loses last perfect credit rating amid rising debt
May 17, 2025
The US has lost its last perfect credit rating, as influential ratings firm Moody's expressed concern over the government's ability to pay back its debt.
In lowering the US rating from 'AAA' to 'Aa1', Moody's noted that successive US administrations had failed to reverse ballooning deficits and interest costs.
A triple-A rating signifies a country's highest possible credit reliability, and indicates it is considered to be in very good financial health with a strong capacity to repay its debts.
Moody's warned in 2023 the US triple-A rating was at risk. Fitch Ratings downgraded the US in 2023 and S&P Global Ratings did so in 2011. Moody's held a perfect credit rating for the US since 1917.
The downgrade "reflects the increase over more than a decade in government debt and interest payment ratios to levels that are significantly higher than similarly rated sovereigns," Moody's said in the statement.
In a statement, the White House said it was "focused on fixing Biden's mess", while taking a swipe at Moody's.
"If Moody's had any credibility," White House spokesman Kush Desai said, "they would not have stayed silent as the fiscal disaster of the past four years unfolded."
A lower credit rating means countries are more likely to default on their sovereign debt, and generally face higher borrowing costs.
Moody's maintained that the US "retains exceptional credit strengths such as size, resilience and dynamism and the continued role of the US dollar as the global reserve currency".
The firm said it expects federal debt to increase to around 134% of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035, up from 98% last year.
GDP is a measure of all the economic activity of companies, governments, and people in a country.
The BBC has reached out to the US Department of Treasury for comment.
The downgrade came on the same day as Trump's landmark spending bill suffered a setback in Congress.
Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill" failed to pass the House Budget Committee, with some Republicans voting against it.
Figures showed the US economy shrank in the first three months of the year as government spending fell and imports surged due to firms racing to get goods into the country ahead of tariffs.
The economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.3%, a sharp downturn after growth of 2.4% in the previous quarter, the Commerce Department said.

Five House Republicans stall Trump's 'big, beautiful' tax bill
May 17, 2025
A budget bill, long touted by Donald Trump as the "big, beautiful bill" hit a roadblock on Friday when lawmakers from the president's own party voted against it in congress.
Five Republicans joined all Democrats in delivering a stunning setback to President Trump's domestic agenda, demanding deeper budget cuts.
Trump, who has muscled through close votes several times this year, urged lawmakers to unite behind the legislation. "We don't need 'GRANDSTANDERS' in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!," he posted on Truth Social.
The bill's chances of success are not hopeless, but its failure gives the Trump administration its first legislative bruise of the year.
Support for the bill among Republicans varies. Some hard-liners want to see the budget cuts go further, while other Republicans have expressed concern about cuts to programmes like Medicaid, which their constituents are dependent on.
The five Republicans who voted against the measure in the procedural vote said they would continue to withhold support unless Speaker Mike Johnson agreed to further cut Medicaid, a healthcare programme for lower-income Americans.
They also want Johnson to include a full repeal of green energy tax cuts, implemented by Democrats, in the bill.
"This bill falls profoundly short," said Texas Republican Chip Roy, who voted against the measure. "It does not do what we say it does with respect to deficits."
The proposed legislation would extend tax cuts implemented during Trump's first administration.
While Trump touts the bill's inclusion of a no tax on tips policy, some critics argue the bill benefits wealthy Americans.
Democrats, who overwhelmingly oppose the bill, have been urging the reconsideration of Medicaid cuts and spending cuts to the Affordable care Act which offers millions of Americans subsidised health insurance.
"No other previous bill, no other previous law, no other previous event caused so many millions of Americans to lose their healthcare. Not even the Great Depression," Pennsylvania Democrat Brendan Boyle said.
If passed, the tax cuts would cost $3.72 trillion (£2.8t) over ten years, according to congress's bipartisan Joint Tax Committee.

Libya's Representative To The UN: The Libyan People Are Tired Of Partial Solutions And Call For The Speedy Organization Of Elections
2025-05-16
Tripoli, May 16, 2024 (LANA) - Taher Al-Sunni, Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stressed that the Libyan people are tired of piecemeal solutions and fragile transitional phases that have failed over the years. He called for the acceleration of elections as a fundamental step to ending these phases and achieving a comprehensive political transition.
This came in his address to the Security Council during the session devoted to hearing a briefing by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on the situation in Libya.
El-Sunni expressed his regret over the recent events in Tripoli, which he described as a direct result of the absence of comprehensive political solutions. He emphasized that Libya faces major security and economic challenges that require effective action from the international community.
The Permanent Representative of Libya to the United Nations also emphasized the Libyan people's rejection of the ongoing transitional phases, criticizing foreign interventions that have contributed to fueling divisions, and holding the Security Council responsible for the current situation. He emphasized that the real solution lies in supporting the Libyan national will, away from temporary solutions.
Regarding Libya's cooperation with the International Criminal Court, Al-Sunni emphasized the importance of continuing this cooperation while respecting Libyan sovereignty. He emphasized the need to prosecute crimes committed on Libyan soil through national courts, and called for the extradition of those wanted by the Libyan judiciary.
Al-Sunni concluded his remarks by emphasizing that achieving justice in Libya must be part of a comprehensive national project, with the need for international cooperation based on mutual respect for Libyan sovereignty.

Chad’s former prime minister and opposition leader arrested for 'inciting hatred'
May 16, 2025
Chad’s former prime minister and opposition leader, Succès Masra, was arrested early on Friday morning at his home in Gassi, a district of the capital, N’Djamena.
Surveillance footage shows the leader of the Transformers political party being taken away by a squad of armed men.
He has been accused of inciting hatred in connection with deadly clashes in the south-west of the country.
In a press conference, his party said he had been kidnapped and demanded his unconditional release.
“The Transformers, a party has always advocated peaceful civic engagement, wishes to express its deep concern over this brutal action,” said its secretary general, Dr Tog-Yeum Nagorngar.
“It was carried out outside of any known legal procedure and in blatant violation of civil and political rights guaranteed by the constitution.”
Prosecutor Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye later said Masra had been detained in connection with a clash on Wednesday in the south-western region of Logone-Occidental.
He said investigations carried out by the judicial police had revealed Masra’s alleged involved in the incident.
“Messages were circulated, particularly on social media, calling on people to arm themselves against fellow citizens,” he said.
The prosecutor gave no details on the content of these message or if Masra had been behind them.
Wednesday’s violent clashes are believed to have been triggered by a land dispute between herders and local communities.
At least 41 people were killed and more than 80 others have been detained.
Masra, a fierce critic of President Mahamat Déby who came second in last year’s elections, has called on his supporters to remain calm.

Libyan police officer killed as protesters attack prime minister’s office
May 17, 2025
TRIPOLI: A police officer was killed in an “attempted assault” on the office of Libya’s internationally recognized premier, the government said Friday, as protesters took to the streets to demand his ouster.
The officer was “targeted while securing the prime minister’s office building,” the Government of National Unity said in a statement.
“He was shot by unknown attackers and succumbed to his injuries,” the statement said.
The government said it had “foiled an attempt to storm the building by a group mixed with protesters” who tried to set it on fire with Molotov cocktails.
Video footage that has not been verified by AFP showed young people running and taking cover behind a low wall near the government headquarters to the sound of automatic gunfire.
Earlier Friday, thousands of protesters had gathered at Martyrs’ Square in Tripoli to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah.
The demonstrators were chanting slogans such as “The nation wants to topple the government” and “We want elections.”
They then marched to the main government building in the city center. “We won’t leave until he leaves,” one protester said.
The marchers carried pictures of Dbeibah, national security adviser Ibrahim Dbeibah and Interior Minister Emad Tarbulsi with their faces crossed out in red.
Ahead of the demonstration, the UN Support Mission in Libya, UNSMIL, had underlined “citizens’ right to peaceful protest” and warned against “any escalation of violence.”
Dbeibah, who leads the divided country’s Government of National Unity, came to power through a UN-backed process in 2021. Planned elections failed to proceed that year because of disagreements among rival factions, and he has remained in power.
Calls for Dbeibah to resign increased after two rival armed groups clashed in the capital this week in the heaviest fighting in years. Eight civilians were killed, according to the United Nations.
Violence flared after the prime minister on Tuesday ordered the armed groups to be dismantled. Demonstrators have accused Dbeibah of failing to restore stability and of being complicit in the growing power of armed groups.
After the demonstration, local media reported the resignation of six ministers and deputy ministers from the government, two of whom confirmed their departure in a video.
Those who resigned were Economy and Trade Minister Mohamed Al-Hawij, Local Government Minister Badr Eddin Al-Tumi and Minister of Housing Abu Bakr Al-Ghawi.
Militia leader Abdulghani Kikli, widely known as Ghaniwa, died in the clashes, which calmed on Wednesday after the government announced a ceasefire.
Libya is split between the UN-recognized government in Tripoli, led by Dbeibah, and a rival administration in the east controlled by the family of military strongman Khalifa Haftar.
The country has remained deeply divided since the 2011 NATO-backed revolt that toppled and killed longtime leader Muammar Qaddafi.

Court to hear contempt proceedings in Lagos Central Mosque case July 2
by Joseph Jibueze | Deputy News Editor
May 16, 2025
Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed July 2 for hearing in a committal motion against Alhaji Sikiru Alabi-Macfoy in the Lagos State Central Mosque leadership case.
The suit, filed by the Registered Trustees of the Jamat-Ul-Muslimeen Council of Nigeria (Lagos Central Mosque), challenges Alabi-Macfoy’s appointment as Baba Adinni of Lagos and Chairman of the Executive Council.
The plaintiffs contend that his appointment was made without the consultation or approval of the Chief Imam, the mosque’s spiritual head.
The plaintiffs, represented by Dr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), filed a Form 49 – notice seeking committal proceedings against Alabi-Macfoy pursuant to Section 72 of the Sheriffs and Civil Process Act and the Judgment (Enforcement) Rules.
Counsel to the first and second defendants, Adekunle Oyesanya (SAN), informed the court of their application to modify the interim orders previously granted.
He argued that the enrolled order did not accurately reflect the court’s proceedings at the last sitting.
Pinheiro objected, describing the application as “convoluted,” as it sought both a modification and a setting aside of the same order.
He argued that the first defendant, having willfully disobeyed the court’s orders, should not be granted the right of audience.
Pinheiro said the plaintiffs’ pending committal application against the first and second defendants should take precedence.
He accused the first defendant of deliberately frustrating the fifth defendant’s efforts to comply with the court’s interim orders, which directed the fifth defendant, whose authority remains unchallenged to administer the mosque’s affairs pending the resolution of the suit.
Oyesanya maintained that the enrolled order did not match the record of proceedings, justifying their request for modification.
When the court asked if he was present during the issuance of the order, he confirmed he was.
Justice Lewis-Allagoa then reiterated that the order was validly made and must be obeyed, stressing the court’s responsibility to enforce its directives.
The court ruled that both the plaintiffs’ committal application and the defendants’ motion for modification would be heard together on July 2.
At the heart of the conflict is Alabi-Macfoy’s controversial appointment, which has sparked sharp divisions within the mosque’s leadership.
The plaintiffs argued that his installation as Baba Adinni is invalid as it has not been sanctioned or officiated by the Chief Imam through the traditional turbaning ceremony.
They warned that the situation threatens to disrupt peace within the mosque community.
The plaintiffs have urged the court to issue preservatory orders to avert potential chaos and preserve order.
They argued that the court’s inherent powers allow it to take interim measures, even in the face of jurisdictional objections.
However, counsel for Alabi-Macfoy and the second defendant opposed the application, insisting that the court lacked jurisdiction and cannot issue any orders until that challenge is resolved.

Finnish Authorities Charge Simon Ekpa With Terrorism Incitement
May 16, 2025
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
Finnish prosecutors announced on Friday that they had charged a man, identified by local media as Nigerian separatist leader, Simon Ekpa, with inciting terrorism online.
Naija News reports that the charges follow an investigation into his activities between 2021 and 2024 in Lahti, Finland.
The Finnish National Prosecution Authority issued a statement confirming that a Finnish individual was charged with suspected public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.
The authorities stated that the charges stem from efforts to establish an independent Biafra region in Nigeria, a cause championed by Ekpa.
While the prosecution authority did not directly name the accused, Finnish public broadcaster, YLE confirmed that the individual in question is Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
He has been advocating for the independence of Nigeria’s southeastern region, a move that has sparked violence and controversy.
Ekpa, who also claims to lead the Biafra Republic’s government in exile, was arrested in November. According to the prosecution authority, Ekpa has been in custody since his arrest and has denied the charges against him.
The dual Finnish-Nigerian national has actively advocated for the secession of Nigeria’s southeastern region, where the Biafra independence movement originated.
This movement was at the heart of the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s, which resulted in significant bloodshed and loss of life. Ekpa is known for his leadership of a faction of IPOB, a separatist group pushing for the creation of the independent Biafra state.
In addition to his separatist activities, Ekpa has also served as a local representative for Finland’s conservative National Coalition Party in Lahti, a city located north of Helsinki. He was a member of the city’s public transport committee.
When Ekpa was arrested, Finnish authorities also sought the detention of four other individuals suspected of financing his activities.
However, the prosecution authority announced on Friday that charges against the four suspects had been dropped due to a lack of evidence.

Anwar tells Muslim nations to strengthen economic foundations, empower youth and embrace innovation
17 May 2025
KAZAN (Tatarstan), May 17 — The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called on the Islamic world to work together and strengthen its fundamentals, which begin with the economy, especially the halal industry that is worth US$3 trillion.
From the Gulf countries, to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, we should then formalise and strengthen this cohesion, he said.
“Then, Islamic finance, not a matter of adopting just what you call as ‘riba’-free, but to enter into new innovations so that it offers an alternative and economically viable for the Muslim world and also the participation of non-Muslims in our societies and non-Muslim countries,” said Anwar during the Plenary Session of the 16th International Economic Forum “Russia- Islamic World: KazanForum 2025”.
Speaking in front of 2,500 participants from more than 100 countries, Anwar also touched on energy transition and digital transformation, and the need for the Muslim countries to embrace them.
“Because after all, how do we honour, love, and follow the deeds of Muhammad, peace be upon him? Because of values and character. So the issue before us, for the young and for us, is to make sure that there is a difference. Family values are important,” he said.
He once again emphasised how to address issues regarding the youth today, echoing his keynote address at the earlier session, urging scholars, intellectuals, and political leaders to take action.
“We have deliberated these issues a number of times, and I have suggested in the strategic meeting this morning that for the youth, we should follow up.
“Let our young boys and girls reflect upon what we have discussed, offer more suggestions, (and) express their support or disagreement, so that the voice of the youth is not only heard, but taken into very serious consideration.
“We must ensure that the young feel and know that in our articulation of issues and decisions in terms of our priorities, they will have a major say in affecting programmes that affect the young,” he added. — Bernama

GRS questions BN, Pakatan’s use of federal secretariat letterhead in Sabah polls announcement without full backing
17 May 2025
KOTA KINABALU, May 17 — Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders have been lambasted for using the Unity Government Secretariat letterhead to announce their Sabah state election cooperation.
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said it is inappropriate since it only involves the understanding of two coalitions.
He said the action by the PH and United Malays National Organisation (Umno) secretary generals, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Datuk Wira Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, had caused unconstructive political polemics in Sabah.
This situation had forced Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to respond, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to explain Hajiji’s statement during a recent visit to Tawau, he said.
Armizan pointed out that Saifuddin and Asyraf should be careful of their actions as the issue has become the attention of the media and rakyat in Sabah.
“They are free to issue official statements representing their respective party coalitions, but the official letterhead of the Unity Government Secretariat can only be used if the stance represents the consensus of all party coalitions,” he said during the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) media appreciation night at a resort here Friday.
On May 9, Saifuddin and Asyraf had announced a cooperation between BN and PH for the Sabah state elections using the Unity Government Secretariat letterhead, which displays the logos of the Unity Government component parties.
Armizan also questioned whether the involved secretariat had issued the official media statement without referring to the Unity Government Leadership Consultative Council.
“Will the Unity Government Secretariat also issue such statements regarding the coming Sarawak state elections?” he asked.
The KPDN minister hopes the Unity Government Leadership Consultative Council secretary-general Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof can take action to ensure such incidents do not recur.
He also urged for the acceptance of the unique political landscapes in states such as Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka and Johor, which will be facing their respective state elections.
“If stability is the goal, mutual respect is required,” stressed Armizan. — The Borneo Post

Shammo killing: DU students want arrest of ‘real killers’, safe campus
May 17, 2025
Protesting students at Dhaka University yesterday issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the arrest of the "real perpetrators" behind the murder of fellow student and Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Shammo, as demonstrations continued for a third straight day.
They also demanded justice for Shammo, a fair trial, and a safe campus.
Around 11:00am yesterday, the agitated students gathered at the base of the Raju Sculpture and staged a protest where they made the announcement.
Under the banner of "General Student Community of Bangladesh", approximately 200–300 students marched towards Shahbagh Police Station.
Taking position outside the station premises, demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved in the murder case, a fair trial, and a safe campus.
During this time, police were on alert in front of Shahbagh Police Station.
Mashiur Rahman Shuvo, a postgraduate student of the Institute of Education and Research, said that if the real perpetrators are not arrested within 48 hours, they will announce their next course of action on Sunday.
According to the students, a delegation of teachers, including Muhammad Abdus Salam, Asim Das, and Sirajul Islam from the Institute of Education and Research department, along with four student representatives, entered the station for discussions.
One of the protesters, Ibrahim Munshi, told The Daily Star, "This is a non-partisan banner. Various political parties are now politicising Shammo's death. But our main demand is justice for Shammo's murder."
When contacted, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur told The Daily Star, "A delegation of teachers and students came to speak with us. ADC Mir Asaduzzaman of our Ramna Zone spoke with them.
"The teachers and students have presented their demands. We informed them that we have arrested three individuals. They will be brought on remand. The investigation is ongoing, and operations are underway. All those involved in the murder will be arrested soon."
Around 1:30pm, the students left the police station area.
Shahriar Alam Shammo, 25, was stabbed to death on Tuesday night near Suhrawardy Udyan. The protests began on DU campus after the killing.
A group of DU students, including leaders and activists of JCD and left-leaning student organisations, under the banner of Students Against Terrorism, have been protesting over the killing.
Shammo was the literature and publication affairs secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal's Sir AF Rahman Hall unit and a student of the 2018-19 session at the Institute of Education and Research.
The victim's brother has filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station. The DU administration has formed an investigation committee regarding the murder.
So far, police have arrested three outsiders in connection with the case. They have been sent to jail via a court order.
Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Tawfique Hasan said case investigators would seek a 10-day remand of the three arrestees.

Warning to Leave US: Thousands of Afghan Refugees in California receive deportation letters
By Fidel Rahmati
May 17, 2025
Thousands of Afghan refugees in California received urgent deportation letters, sparking fear and confusion amid ongoing immigration policy uncertainties.
In recent weeks, thousands of Afghan refugees residing in California have received deportation notices from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). These letters demand that recipients leave the United States within seven days, warning that failure to comply will result in federal enforcement actions. The notices have caused widespread anxiety among the Afghan community, particularly in the Bay Area, which hosts one of the largest Afghan populations in the U.S.
Many of the affected individuals entered the U.S. under humanitarian parole after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. While some were granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS), the Biden administration’s decision to provide immigration relief has been reversed. The DHS announced the termination of TPS for Afghanistan, effective July 12, 2025, citing improved conditions in the country. This move aligns with the Trump administration’s broader immigration enforcement policies, which have drawn criticism from refugee advocacy groups.
The deportation notices have raised concerns due to their inconsistencies. Some letters lack personal identifiers such as names or case numbers, leading to confusion among recipients. In certain instances, individuals received follow-up letters stating that the initial notice was sent in error. These discrepancies have exacerbated the fear and uncertainty within the Afghan community.
Afghan community leaders and legal advocates are mobilizing to support those affected. Attorney Spojamie Nasiri reported that many of her clients have received the deportation notices, prompting widespread fear and reluctance to engage in daily activities. Community organizations are offering legal assistance and guidance to help individuals navigate the complex immigration landscape.
The situation highlights the precarious legal status of many Afghan evacuees. A report by CBS News revealed that over 36,000 Afghan evacuees lack a direct pathway to permanent legal status in the U.S., leaving them vulnerable to deportation if their asylum claims are unsuccessful. The proposed Afghan Adjustment Act, which aims to provide a legal pathway to permanent residency for these individuals, has stalled in Congress, leaving many in legal limbo.
The recent deportation notices to Afghan refugees in California underscore the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform. While the U.S. has a history of providing refuge to those fleeing persecution, the current policy shifts have placed many at risk of being returned to a volatile and dangerous environment.
It is imperative for lawmakers to act swiftly to pass legislation that offers a clear and permanent legal status to Afghan evacuees. Failure to do so not only betrays the promises made to those who risked their lives to assist U.S. efforts but also undermines the nation’s commitment to humanitarian values.
