Muslims Of India Should Stop Suffering From Uniform
Civil Code Phobia

Renowned
intellectual and Padma Shri Professor Akhtar Al Wasey said: Emotional reaction
on this is not the solution, let the Muslim Personal Law Board present strong
arguments, Muslims should not participate in any TV channel discussion on this
topic.
-----
New Delhi (Inquilab Bureau) Famous intellectual and
Padma Shri Professor Akhtar Al Wasey, while expressing his reaction to the
re-consultation on the Uniform Civil Code by the Law Commission, said that the
Uniform Civil Code has been created by Muslims, in such a case, he said that
want to emphasize that Muslims should stop climbing because Uniform Civil Code
is not a problem of any one religion in India but it is related to all
religions. They should not express their views, rather they should collectively
empower the All India Muslim Personal Labour Board to represent them before the
Law Commission and present their arguments strongly.
Professor Akhtar Al Wasey said that he supports the
manner in which senior journalist Shahid Siddiqui has advised the Nation of
Islamia on the issue in a timely manner. But he should not enter into the
discussion on the subject of Uniform Civil Code. He strongly emphasized that no
one should go to discuss this issue on any TV channels, because by doing so,
the TV channels will also have the opportunity to be hateful. Rather, by giving
it a communal colour, they will fulfil the political ambitions of the
government.
He said that remember that the problem is not only the
religion of Islam but also the religion of Hinduism. If they have less than
seven rounds of marriage there, then the marriage cannot take place. So there is
nothing to worry about. Prof. Akhtarul Wasey added that the government has not
presented any outline of the Uniform Civil Code to us yet. The Commission
constituted in 2018 rejected the proposal of Uniform Civil Code. In its report,
the commission had said that diversity should be celebrated and respected in
the country. Along with this, the Commission also said that Uniform Civil Code
is currently unnecessary and undesirable for India.
He questioned why the central government did not
present the report of the previous commission in Parliament, as its aim was to
keep the matter under wraps. He said that if the report of the previous Law
Commission was presented in the Parliament, the government's agenda would have
ended. He said that the government itself had opposed the uniform civil code in
the Supreme Court. Political motives are in play and Muslims need to understand
this ploy.

Seeking U.S. Support for Saudi-Israel Deal, Netanyahu

Jun 18, 2023
A senior Israeli official’s statement to Haaretz over
the weekend regarding U.S.-Iran negotiations underscored the complicated
situation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finds himself in. While Netanyahu
needs President Joe Biden’s cooperation in seeking rapprochement with Saudi
Arabia, and is clamoring for an invitation to the White House, he is avoiding a
frontal clash on the Iran issue, at least for now.
The senior official clarified that Israel has not yet
presented a formal position on these negotiations, avoiding any direct attacks
on U.S. policy for now. He vehemently denied recent reports from the U.S. that
Israel was leaking information to scuttle any nuclear talks. This is
particularly important, since the U.S. administration is constantly updating
Israel on their progress, with no surprises cropping up so far.
Netanyahu has hardly spoken about the talks with Iran
in public, in some cases only repeating old formulas regarding Israel’s ability
to defend itself on its own. He has not directly criticized the Biden
administration, not even in closed meetings in which he confirmed a report in
Haaretz indicating that the U.S. wishes to reach informal understandings with
Iran, rather than a formal deal that would require approval by Congress.
There are three main considerations underlying
Netanyahu’s caution. First, he is still hoping to get an invitation to the
White House soon. The fact that almost six months after the government was
sworn in, “my old friend Joe” has not found the time to meet him is a source of
embarrassment, projecting weakness.
Moreover, the initiative for a Saudi-Israeli deal,
which Netanyahu believes can restore his public standing, depends almost
exclusively on Biden, who has to approve a host of American concessions to the
Saudis in order to persuade Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to move toward
normalizing relations with Israel.
The administration is still committed to this idea,
understanding that such normalization would serve Biden’s interests ahead of
the 2024 election. Two visits by senior American officials are scheduled soon,
focusing on this issue. Biden’s adviser for Middle East affairs, Brett McGurk,
will meet the Saudi crown prince, while Assistant Secretary of State Barbara
Leaf will visit Israel. In a New York Times report on the weekend, a U.S. government
official estimated that the chances of a Saudi-Israeli deal are less than even.
A direct Netanyahu assault on the Biden administration
over the Iran issue would move him away from the White House, reducing the
chances of significant American help on the Saudi front. Gulf states would also
be opposed to such an attack, since they are presently reconciling with Iran.
The Saudi foreign minister visited Tehran over the weekend, the first such
visit in a decade.
Netanyahu’s approach is not affecting some of his
cabinet members, who have been initiating conflict with the U.S.
administration, sometimes for personal reasons. A prominent example was
Diaspora Affairs Minister AmichaiChikli, who attacked Prof. Deborah Lipstadt,
Biden’s special envoy for combating antisemitism. Lipstadt is a longtime,
prominent advocate for Israel, and is scathingly criticized by leftist U.S.
organizations. Chikli called her a lowly official responsible for fighting
antisemitism.
Such remarks hurt Netanyahu’s interests, but the Biden
administration realizes the dire straits he is in with his coalition that leave
him wary of upbraiding Chikli. As long as Netanyahu is cautious, the
administration is refraining from considering these remarks the stuff of a
crisis.
Beyond the wish to improve, or at least not
exacerbate, relations with Washington, Israel’s approach to the talks with Iran
is realistic: Israel has limited options for influencing them, with little
chance of success in provoking anti-Biden moves in Congress.
Netanyahu is still perceived in Washington as
responsible for Iran being closer than ever to having a nuclear weapon, as he
pressured former U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw from the deal in 2018.
Senior Democrats were furious at Trump and Netanyahu over this. Any attempt to
recruit them against Biden is doomed to fail.

The Taliban Government Runs on WhatsApp

Kabul in 2021.Credit...Victor J. Blue for The New York Times
-----
By Christina Goldbaum
June 17, 2023
Late one night two months ago, a team of Taliban
security officers assembled on the outskirts of Afghanistan’s capital to
prepare for a raid on an Islamic State hide-out.
As the zero hour approached, the men fiddled with
their automatic rifles while their leader, Habib Rahman Inqayad, scrambled to
get the exact location of their target. He grabbed his colleagues’ phones and
called their superiors, who insisted they had sent him the location pin of the
target to his WhatsApp.
“The only way we communicate is WhatsApp — and I
didn’t have access,” said Mr. Inqayad, 25, whom The New York Times has followed
since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
He was not alone. In recent months, complaints from
Taliban officials, the police and soldiers of their WhatsApp accounts being
banned or temporarily deactivated have become widespread, disruptions that have
illuminated how the messaging platform has become a backbone of the Taliban’s
nascent government. Those interruptions also underscore the far-reaching
consequences of international sanctions on a government that has become among
the most isolated in the world.
The United States has long criminalized any form of
support for the Taliban. Consequently, WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook,
scans group names, descriptions and group profile photos on the messaging app
to identify users among the Taliban and block their accounts, according to a
spokesman for the company.
The policy has been in place since U.S. sanctions were
enacted more than two decades ago. Even when the Taliban were an insurgency,
the ban handicapped some fighters who relied on the app because it catered to
people with neither literacy nor technological skills; using WhatsApp’s voice
message feature, they could send messages and listen to the verbal instructions
from their commanders with the press of a button.
Government departments use WhatsApp groups to
disseminate information among employees. Officials rely on other groups to
distribute statements to journalists and transmit official communiqués between
ministries. Security forces plan and coordinate raids on Islamic State cells,
criminal networks and resistance fighters from their phones on the app.
“WhatsApp is so important to us — all my work depends
on it,” said Shir Ahmad Burhani, a police spokesman for the Taliban
administration in Baghlan Province, in northern Afghanistan. “If there were no
WhatsApp, all our administrative and non-administrative work would be
paralyzed.”
The use of WhatsApp among the Taliban’s ranks began
during the war, as the app gained popularity worldwide and cellphone towers
began sprouting up across Afghanistan. Today, experts estimate that around 70
percent of Afghanistan’s population has access to a cellphone. Like millions
across the globe, Afghans depend on WhatsApp’s speed and flexibility to
communicate with each other and the outside world.
Since the Taliban seized power, the popularity and
accessibility of WhatsApp among the group’s ranks has grown rapidly.
Credit...Jim Huylebroek for The New York Times
During the war, Taliban fighters took photographs when
they attacked government outposts and shared them on WhatsApp with their
superiors and the insurgency’s media wing, said Kunduzi, a commander in the
Taliban Army’s Second Regiment, who preferred to go only by his surname because
he was not authorized to speak to the news media. “WhatsApp was a simple tool,
and sending videos and photos via email used to take a lot of work and time,”
he added.
Since the Taliban seized power, the popularity and
accessibility of WhatsApp among the group’s ranks has grown rapidly. Former
Taliban fighters began using their smartphones around the clock, no longer
afraid that Western forces could use the signal to track or target them in
drone strikes, they say.
As thousands of former fighters took up new posts as
policemen and soldiers in major cities that were now under Taliban control,
they also gained access to proper cellphone stores.
One recent afternoon at a cellphone shop in central
Kabul, the capital, a dozen Talibs crowded onto wooden benches, waiting for
their service tickets to be called. Since the new government began doling out
salaries to Taliban fighters turned government employees, cellphone providers
have been overrun with new customers. Many vendors can no longer keep up with
the demand. Across Afghanistan, stores have reported shortages of SIM cards and
have had to turn customers away.
Sitting in the waiting room, Muhammad Arif Omid, 21,
fiddled with his paper ticket in one hand and his Samsung smartphone in the
other. Originally from Helmand Province in the south, Mr. Omid bought his first
cellphone and SIM card around four years ago — back when doing so was a days-
or weekslong effort.
“We were living in the mountains — we couldn’t go to
the shops in cities to get a phone or SIM,” he said. Instead, Talib fighters
had to track down secondhand dealers in rural provinces under the movement’s
control or give money to a relative to shop for them. Nowadays, he says,
getting a nice smartphone and data plan is easier than ever.
But the cat-and-mouse game of shutting down accounts
has become a headache for officials in the Taliban administration — an almost
daily reminder that the government they lead is all but shunned on the world
stage.

Canada: Muslim Parents Spearhead Protest Against

Jun 17, 2023
Hundreds of parents, most of them Muslim, held a
protest in front of city hall in Calgary, Alberta on Friday.
The protesters held signs reading “let kids be kids”
and “school is not a place for political activism.”
According to The Counter Signal, chants of “Leave our
kids alone,” garnered responses from dozens of passing cars whose drivers
honked in support.
According to the report on The Counter Signal, LGBT
activists decided to refrain from creating a counter protest because, "It
would be disrespectful to Muslims to show opposition to the protest."
“Any counter protest to the action at city hall will
likely be used as ammunition for this hate group to paint queer folks as
racist,” a source told The Counter Signal, who explained that the activists
consulted with “queer Muslims.”

Sakal Hindu Samaj, The Right-Wing Group Threatens To
Demolish Mosque If Built In Mumbai's Ulwe, Stages Protest
By G Mohiuddin Jeddy
Jun 18, 2023
The protestors threatened to intensify their agitation
and demolish the mosque when constructed if their demand of shifting the holy
place is not accepted.
Navi Mumbai: The Sakal Hindu Samaj (SHS), a right-wing
organisation, on Saturday, staged a protest and a bandh in the developing node
of Ulwe against the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra
Limited (CIDCO)’s proposed allotment of a plot for a mosque. Hundreds of people
participated in the ‘Jan Akrosh Morcha’ against what the protestors termed
‘Land Jihad’.
“Ulwe has a majority of Hindu residents, with hardly a
few Muslims. We cannot allow a mosque here. Why should we have to hear their
Azaan calls from the loudspeaker every two hours? Hindus of castes have
awakened and hence we have all united today to oppose the mosque plot,”
Rajendra Patil, a member of SHS, said.

Remaining closed for over 20 days, some of the shops
belonging to Muslim trader in Purola town of Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district
reopened on Saturday amid heavy police deployment.
Muslim traders had shut their business establishments
on May 28 following protest rallies by some Hindu right-wing organisations, and
posters threatening them with consequences if they did not leave. There were
also demands for verification of all ‘outsiders’ by local trader unions.
“We opened our shops today after 21 days. The business
was normal and I had around 12-13 customers today… Around 6-7 other Muslims who
hadn’t left the town also opened their shops. It all appears to be peaceful
now, but we are still scared. It will take us some time to feel normal,” said

Premier League breaks ground with new rules for Muslim
players
Dr. Kamilla Swart-Arries
18 Jun 2023
In a historic move, the Premier League recently
enhanced its inclusivity credentials by instructing referees in the top two
professional football leagues in England to pause matches during the Islamic
holy month of Ramadan. This decision, aimed at allowing Muslim players to break
their fast, marks a milestone in recognizing and accommodating the religious
practices of athletes.
With an estimated 250 Muslim players currently active
in first teams and academies across the top four English football leagues, the
decision holds immense importance. Thanks to the Premier League, star players
such as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester City’s RiyadMahrez, and Chelsea’s
Hakim Ziyech are now able to observe their religious obligations while
continuing to excel on the sports field.
Commenting on the significance of the decision, Dr.
Kamilla Swart-Arries, Associate Professor and Director: Sport and Entertainment
Management at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Science and Engineering
said: “The Premier League’s move to pause matches and accommodate Muslim
players during Ramadan underscores the importance of recognizing and promoting
inclusivity and diversity in sport.”

Israel Could Accept US-Iran Nuclear Understanding,
Lawmaker Says
June 17, 2023
JERUSALEM — Israel could find acceptable an
understanding between its archfoe Iran and the United States if it includes
rigorous supervision of Tehran's nuclear program, a senior lawmaker said in
comments aired on Saturday.
According to Iranian and Western officials, Washington
is holding talks with Iran to sketch out steps that could include limiting the
Iranian nuclear program.
These steps would be cast as an understanding rather
than an agreement requiring review by the U.S. Congress, such as the 2015
accord abandoned in 2018 by then-President Donald Trump.
"It's not a wide-scope agreement, it's more like
a small agreement, a memorandum of understanding, an M.O.U., and I think Israel
can live with this if there is real supervision," Yuli Edelstein, head of
the Israeli parliament's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, told Channel 12's
Meet the Press.

June 17, 2023
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has told Saudi Foreign
Minister Faisal bin Farhan that expansion of cooperation between Tehran and
Riyadh has pissed off only the enemies of Muslims, especially the Zionist
regime.
The president said normalization of ties with the
regime by some countries not only does not bring security for them but it also
goes against the will of the Muslim ummah.
He maintained that there are some problems in the West
Asian region that have plagued the Muslim ummah, noting that cooperation and
dialog between regional countries can help overcome the problems.

Border tension between Iran, Afghanistan exposes risk
of widening conflict
ALI YOUNES
June 17, 2023
WASHINGTON: Recent border tensions between Iran and
the Taliban government in Afghanistan have resulted in the death of several
military personnel from both sides and exposed deep historic and recent
fissures between the two nations.
Though both governments have taken measures to quickly
de-escalate tensions, the risk of war or wider conflict between the countries
remains plausible, according to experts who spoke during a session organized by
the Middle East Institute in Washington and attended by Arab News on Friday.
These sources of tension include border demarcation
between the two countries; water that flows from the Helmand River from
Afghanistan into Iran; Iran’s failure to formally recognize the Taliban
government; and the Taliban’s anti-Iran stance.
Fatemeh Aman, who is an expert on the two countries
and a non-resident senior fellow at the MEI, said that “Iran had never cut its
ties with the Taliban,” and added that Iran had supported the Islamic movement
with weapons in an attempt to expand its influence and counter the US presence
in the region during the American military occupation of Afghanistan.

New Iran deal meant to stop Israeli attack – Western
official
By LAHAV HARKOV
JUNE 17, 2023
The key objective of the impending nuclear deal
between the US and Iran is to stop Israel from attacking Iran, a Western
official told Reuters.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said
that any deal between Washington and Tehran will not stop Jerusalem from taking
steps against the threat of a nuclear Iran.
He warned that "Iran is gaining abilities [and]
Ukraine became an excellent platform for testing them...We need to keep an eye
on this."
The US and Iran negotiated the expected deal in recent
weeks via Oman, after talks to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement failed last
year. The new agreement, which is expected to be a series of unwritten
understandings, would have the US provide sanctions relief in exchange for Iran
limiting its nuclear program.

Bangladesh to join BRICS: Move to diversify foreign
relations and currency: Expert
by Huma Siddiqui
June 18, 2023
As the BRICS looks to expand and Bangladesh hopes to
join it in August, it seems that its aim is to create a new global order to
counter the dominance of US and its currency dollars.
If Bangladesh were to join BRICS (Brazil, Russia,
India, China, and South Africa), it could potentially have an impact on the
bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh. BRICS is an influential bloc
of emerging economies that focuses on economic cooperation and development.
On one hand, if Bangladesh becomes a member of BRICS,
it could lead to increased economic ties and collaboration between India and
Bangladesh. This could result in improved trade relations, investment
opportunities, and infrastructure development, benefiting both countries.
On the other hand, joining BRICS may also introduce
new dynamics and considerations into the bilateral relations between India and
Bangladesh. India, as an existing BRICS member, would need to navigate the
changing dynamics within the group and adjust its approach towards Bangladesh
accordingly. It could lead to a reevaluation of priorities, cooperation
frameworks, and engagement strategies.

UN Peacekeeping Chief Urged to Raise Rights Concerns
in Bangladesh Visit
Shaikh Azizur Rahman
June 17, 2023
Human Rights Watch and other rights organizations have
urged U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix to
“publicly voice concerns” about rights abuses by Bangladesh's security forces
when he visits the south Asian country later this month.
Lacroix is set to visit Bangladesh on June 25-26 at
the invitation of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a state guest.
In Dhaka, he will attend a conference organized by the ministry.
Bruno StagnoUgarte, the chief advocacy officer at HRW,
said the security forces of Bangladesh — “in particular, the Rapid Action
Battalion”— have long been involved in serious human rights violations.
“Lacroix should emphasize that if Bangladesh is to
maintain its role as the top contributor of peacekeeping troops, it should
appropriately apply the U.N. human rights screening policy, which requires
governments, alongside the U.N. to ensure their nationals serving with the U.N.
have not violated human rights laws,” Ugarte said in a statement, which was
released Monday.
“Mr. Lacroix should publicly voice concerns to ensure
there is adequate screening, particularly if anyone has been part of RAB,”
Ganguly told VOA.

“You have mothers who, 15 minutes before this accident

indoctrination shows that progressives don't want
'inclusion' they just want compliance
by: Adam B. Coleman
06/17/2023
Americans long ago agreed that tolerance was to be the
ingredient that fused together the melting pot of people of various cultures,
ethnicities, and religions. This added ingredient was supposed to allow for
each flavor of individual to coexist beside the next without dominating the
uniqueness of each other and degrading the tastefulness of our society.
However, today’s progressive is hell-bent on derailing
this American strategy by forcing ideological inclusion, regardless of how it
puts a bad taste in many of our mouths.
On Tuesday, the clash between the tolerant and the
inclusive happened in Montgomery County, Maryland, as the tolerant parents,
many of Muslim faith, battled to have the school board allow their children to
opt out of any LGBTQ+ teachings on the grounds that it violated their religious
beliefs.

Malians head to polls for referendum on new
constitution
18/06/2023
The west African nation has been under military rule
since an August 2020 coup, which came after a decade of instability marked by
jihadist insurgencies and political and economic crisis.
Some 8.4 million citizens are eligible to vote “yes”
or “no” on the draft constitution in the first electoral test for leader
Colonel AssimiGoita, 40, who has vowed to lead the country back to civilian
rule in 2024 elections.
But election turnout is typically low in the country
of 21 million, where many have grown weary of chronic instability, while others
face the direct danger of jihadist attacks in central and northern regions.
Security is an ever-present concern—there is always
the risk of an attack. For this reason the vote will not be held in some parts
of the country, including in Kidal, the ex-rebels’ stronghold in the north.
The junta will be judged on turnout as a measure of
its ability to restore stability, as well as an indicator of people’s
enthusiasm for the junta’s agenda.

Ukraine president Zelenskyy rules out talks with
Russia as African leaders urge de-escalation
Jun 17, 2023
KYIV: Ukrainian President VolodymyrZelenskyy ruled out
the possibility of talks with Russia on Friday after a visiting delegation of
African leaders urged both countries to de-escalate.
The diplomatic team came to Kyiv to voice the concerns
of a continent that has suffered from the fallout of Russia's invasion -- in
particular from rising grain prices -- with South African President Cyril
Ramaphosa insisting "there should be peace through negotiations".z
But Zelenskyy rejected that possibility during a joint
press conference, telling reporters: "I clearly said several times at our
meeting that to allow any negotiations with Russia now that the occupier is on
our land is to freeze the war, to freeze pain and suffering".
Shortly after the African leaders' arrival, air raid
sirens sounded across the country as Russian missiles were detected, forcing
the delegates to take shelter in the capital.

Pakistan blames geopolitics for stalled IMF programme
Jun 17, 2023
ISLAMABAD: Cash-strapped Pakistan has blamed
geopolitics for the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s reluctance to revive a
stalled bailout programme, alleging that global institutions wanted Pakistan to
default on its sovereign debt, like Sri Lanka, and then enter into negotiations
with the global lender.
Addressing a parliamentary committee on finance and
revenue, Pakistan finance minister Ishaq Dar said the IMF’s demand for a $6
billion guarantee on external resources was unjustified and that the IMF’s
delaying plan apparently suggested a political agenda.
“Geopolitics is behind a halted loan programme so that
Pakistan defaults. Foreign hostile elements want Pakistan to turn into another
Sri Lanka and then the IMF negotiates with Islamabad,” Dar said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s

17 Jun 2023
Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia – While the people of Bali

little-known but symbolically important Olympic-recognised competition on the
