10-09-2023
Bet Dwarka (Gujarat): Ahead of the 2022 Gujarat
elections, home minister Amit Shah had said that the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) had successfully demolished “fake Mazars” (Muslim shrines) in the
westernmost coastal point of Bet Dwarka. He addressed it as part of a
“clean-up” operation against illegal encroachments.
Since October 2022, the region’s coastal belt has
experienced several targeted demolition drives. The first such incident took
place in the port city of Porbandar. The authorities issued prohibitory orders
which prevented local Muslims from protesting the demolition of the Murad Shah
Pir Dargah, which was cited as an ‘unauthorised’ religious structure.
Around the same time, in Bet Dwarka island, at least
100 structures, including 30 religious ones belonging to the “minority
community”, were demolished.
The state’s tourism minister, Purnesh Modi, while
defending the razing in Dwarka, said in a series of tweets (now deleted) that
Muslim families living there had “married” their daughters to “grooms in
Pakistan”. He further alleged that many Pakistani women were getting married to
locals who lived on the island. He also alleged that the region had become a
hub for the smuggling of drugs from Pakistan.
The Bet Dwarka island falls under the Devbhoomi
district, where the DwarkadhishMukhya Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord
Krishna, is located. The majority of the island’s locals happen to be Muslims.
However, several fishermen alleged that all the
demolished properties belonged to Muslims and that they were being “selectively
picked out and targeted”. One of them is Bet Dwarka’s resident Ismail
Chamadiya.
Chamadiya has filed multiple appeals to the
authorities for compensation. He and his family of five have since been living
under a makeshift tarpaulin tent, having nowhere to go since their home was
destroyed. He alleged, “The distance between the Qamaralidargah and a local
‘matakamandir’ (temple) here was just half a kilometre, but the mandir has been
left untouched whereas our Dargah was reduced to rubble.”
Some months later, in March 2023, another wave of
demolitions took place in the Harshad port of Gandhvi, Navadra village, Bhogat
and again in Bet Dwarka. UsmanganiSherasiya, a civil rights activist and
community organiser from the region, alleged that the demolition actions
targeted “only Muslims”.
However, before these demolitions had started, the
residents were sent a notice conveying the same, following which these families
moved court, seeking the regularisation of their residences.
According to the Indian Express, 69 and 122 fishermen
families from Gandhvi and Navadra villages, respectively, had filed a petition
seeking regularisation of their homes. They had cited a 1981 circular which
allowed for the same and was issued by the Gujarat government itself.
For 44-year-old fisherman Gafur Daud Patel, 12 hours
was all he had to pack all of his fishing equipment and machinery before the
authorities demolished his house. He lived in Harshad harbour, in the village
of Gandhvi, in the coastal district of Devbhumi Dwarka. Patel is one of the
village’s 200 Muslim fishermen who have nowhere to go after their houses were
demolished.
“In January of this year, many of us from Harshad (a
harbour in Gandhvi village), Navadra and Bhogat were first served notices,
saying our homes are illegally encroaching upon government land, so we have to
leave. We immediately approached the high court and this matter was pending
before them. Then, on March 11 and 12, the bulldozers arrived and started
tearing down properties,” said Patel.
He also pointed out that the local Hindus have not
seen their homes demolished. “Even those Hindus were served notices. Fifteen to
20 such families were served notices.”
This reporter met one of the Hindu shop owners who was
served a demolition notice. Fifty-year-old Mansukhbhai (who prefers to go only
by his first name), runs a hotel in Gandhvi, as well as a grocery shop. His
shop was allegedly served a notice just five days prior to the demolition
action. His shop was among the eight to ten that were demolished.
He also told The Wire that the “bulldozer action was
still mostly one-sided against one community. And local Hindus largely
supported the move. Only 10-15% of non-Muslims here think the (Muslim)
machhiyaras are living legally.”
He added that despite his attempts to convince the
mamlatdar (revenue officer) that his shop was a legally constructed concrete
structure, authorities told him that they “had received orders from above”.
Meanwhile, Muslim fishermen allege that the mamlatdar
was “soft” on Hindu-owned shops and establishments. The Wire called and sent
emails to the revenue officer, Dakshaben Rindani, but received no response. This
story shall be updated if she chooses to revert.
In Porbandar, the story of fishermen seeking mass
euthanasia caught the media’s attention last year. However, over the past year,
what has come to light is the marginalisation and victimisation of the local
Muslim fishermen, resulting in the loss of their livelihoods.
In May 2022, 45-year-old Allarakha Ismailbhai Thimmar
had filed a petition in the Gujarat high court, seeking permission to undergo
euthanasia for himself and 600 members of his fishing community. The plea,
filed on behalf of the Gosabara Muslim Fishermen’s Society, alleged that “the
government does not provide facilities to people belonging to a particular
community.”
“Our livelihood is at stake. In 2010, the freshwater
lake here where we had been fishing was barred to us. So we decided to venture
out into the sea, and we even invested money to buy bigger boats and fishing
equipment for the same. Then, in 2016, the fisheries department stopped us from
accessing the Porbandar coast for fishing, despite this being an open bandar
[port],” he said.
He added that “only Muslims” have been barred from
this, even while Porbandar remains an open, government-supported bandar. Adding
to their woes is the issue of anchoring their boats.
The Muslim fishermen allege that the authorities have
colluded with the powerful Kharwa community (a Hindu-dominated caste of
fishermen) to prevent them from docking their boats in Gosabara. While the
authorities maintain that the fishermen have the right to dock their boats in
the Porbandar port, the community has been demanding the right to park their
boats in Gosabara or the nearby Navi Bandar port, owing to the logistical
difficulties and distance from their village to Porbandar.
“The Kharwa Hindu community exerted pressure on the
authorities to not let us operate. Despite this area being a government port,
the community has successfully applied pressure. Initially, we requested access
to our own village port, and then we asked for at least access to Navi Bandar,
pleading with the government to allocate a nearby port for us, but all our
efforts were in vain. The Kharwa Hindu vote bank consists of approximately
25,000 people, whereas we are much smaller in number. Nobody cares,” he
said.
LaljiKanjibhai, a Hindu and the sarpanch of the
neighbouring TukdaGosa village, concurred. “They are only being targeted
because of their religious identity. I myself have requested the fisheries
department and local administration to allow them free access to the port. This
is the only job they know, their community has been doing it for ages, why
deprive them of this opportunity?” he said.
Allarakha Ismailbhai Thimmar, along with local fisher
families from Gosabara village, at a protest last year, after appealing for
mass-euthanasia. Photo: By special arrangement.
Thimmar and his community’s attempt, calling for
mass-euthanasia, is an extreme case where the situation emerged out of “extreme
helplessness”, according to UsmanganiSherasiya, an activist.
Sherasiya, who has been working with the state’s
coastal communities for over three decades, pointed out that the communal
divide between the fishermen and coastal communities has spread throughout
Gujarat’s seaside, at the cost of Muslims’ economic security and futures.
Even the ports have been “communalised”, he noted. The
ports where Kharwa fishermen dock their boats have jetties, while most Muslim
fishermen don’t have this facility. “For instance, look at Porbandar; it has a
jetty (mainly for Hindu fishers), and in Junagadh, the Mangrol port also boasts
a jetty. In fact, a second jetty was recently constructed there due to the
increasing number of boats,” he explained. A jetty offers significant
advantages as it serves as a protective barrier safeguarding the coastline from
perilous currents or tides, ensuring the safety of both fishermen and their
vessels.
Yaqub Musa Patel, 45, the now-displaced resident of
Navadra village, describes how difficult it is to earn a livelihood now. “In
the Mul Dwarka port, we can use the jetty – but even then it’s actually run for
Ambuja Cements and not for the fishermen. It’s mostly us – the Muslim fishermen
– who use it. The port in Okha town also has a number of Muslims.”
He pointed out how the “smaller, more remote” regions
of Harshad, Navadra, Bhogat and Dwarka had mostly Muslim fishermen, whereas
Porbandar, Mangrol, Veraval, etc. had mostly Hindu fishermen who could access
the jetties. “Even my family originally came from Somnath district to Dwarka to
fish because of a communal rift with the Kharwa Hindu fishers and that was five
decades ago. Local fisher communities mobilise on religious and caste lines,”
he said.
According to Muslim fishermen like Patel and Thimmar,
approximately 90% of the trawlers and large boats are owned by the Kharwas,
while other groups have to manage with significantly fewer and smaller
resources. They also claim that no member of even the opposition parties has
raised their cause. “The Hindu Kharwas constitute a powerful voter bloc; we are
of little consequence to any politician,” Thimmar said.
The Wire reached out to Porbandar MLA and Congress
leader, Arjun Modhwadia, who denied claims of inaction. Modhwadia, however,
conceded that there were inequalities among those who can access the ports and
jetties. “From Mandvi (in Kutch) to the Somnath district, there are various
types of fishermen – the Muslim Machhiyara community, the Kharwa community, the
Koli community and even some traditional tribal communities, who have been
fishing for generations. What’s happening now is that the bigger towns of
fishermen (as in Porbandar, Jakhau, Veraval, Mangrol) have their own facilities
for landing in their particular area. But in smaller towns and villages, there
are no landing facilities,” he said.
He added that at present, “from Dwarka to Porbandar,
these particular communities of fishermen are not allowed to have a landing
point.”
He also said that the opposition had been advocating,
both within the Vidhan Sabha and through other means, for the government to
designate a specific location in each district for fishermen from smaller
villages – such as in Dwarka district, Junagadh Gir-Somnath, and others.
“Unfortunately,” he added, “this government has not been identifying suitable
landing points for these particular communities, resulting in difficulties for
their livelihoods.”
“They destroyed a madrassa, a mosque and two dargahs
in our village, including the Siddhi Pir dargah and Murad Pir dargah. The
dargahs were not even located near our houses. The authorities claimed they
were built illegally. When a dargah was located so far off from the rest of
what they called “illegal”, why bulldoze that property?” asked Hussain Suleiman,
who hails from the Navadra village.
Imam Sharfuddin, a local cleric, who resides at
Harshad harbour in Gandhvi, told The Wire that both the Madina mosque and the
‘Bade Pir kadargah’ had been destroyed. “The dargah was a very old one, it
wasn’t even located near the rest of the bulldozered settlements but much
further away, in a place where other establishments run mostly by Hindus have
gone untouched. It appears as if the administration went out of its way to
specifically demolish the dargah,” he said.
At the location where the demolitions occurred, near
the seashore, there is a Shiv temple situated in the same vicinity as the
‘illegal’ Muslim-owned establishments, and it remains intact.
Gafur Daud Patel concurred. “The temple is still here,
it is built on the very same land and in the same area. Why was it spared, if
all our properties have been destroyed?” he said.
Meanwhile, in Bet Dwarka island, local Muslims and
activists alleged that 30 to 33 religious structures were demolished. Almost
all of them belonged to Muslims, they alleged.
Rukaiya Bi, whose home was demolished in March this
year, alleged that the administration was “bringing [UP chief minister] Yogi
Adityanath’s model to our doorstep”.
Sindhi Janardhan, who identified himself as a Hindu
living in the region for over three decades, refuted these allegations,
claiming that even Hindus will lose their homes as another round of demolitions
to build the corridor for the Dwarkadhish temple will be carried out.
“So, it is not selective,” Janardhan, who runs a
hardware shop, said. However, when asked about the date or time of these
upcoming demolitions, Janardhan did not reply.
The Wire tried to reach out to DevbhumiDwarka’s
district commissioner, Ashok Sharma, on this matter. This story shall be
updated if and when he responds.
In Navadra village, 60-year-old Hussain Suleiman had
spent Rs 20 lakh just a year ago to build a bungalow. He lived here with his
five sons and their wives. All of them are directly or indirectly involved in
the fishing trade. This property was razed to the ground “within minutes”.
“There has been absolutely no talk nor even a mention
of any compensation for our demolished homes,” Suleiman said, adding that he
was lucky to have rescued five boats and take those along with the family’s
fishing equipment and machinery.
“We would earn more than Rs 1 lakh a month, and even
more during the peak season. But since the demolitions, we are struggling to
make ends meet,” he said.
His sons, Saddam Hussain, 25, and Ramzan Hussain, 23,
agreed. Saddam told The Wire that over 100 families from the affected villages
have temporarily settled in Rupen, another coastal village in the district. But
they are “desperate” to return, he added.
“Many of us managed to save our boats and take our fishing
equipment along here, but parking of boats is a huge problem since we need
permission from the fisheries department. Also, aside from getting the permits,
we need space to park and that’s difficult to manage here when thousands of
fishers who have been living here since before having taken up that space”,
said Saddam, illustrating the logistical hurdles they faced.
Hussain Suleiman, flanked by his sons Saddam and
Ramzan, and their boat which was saved after the demolition of their home. The
boat has been parked on the shore, owing to a lack of parking space and no
permits, as they await the opportunity to fish again and return to the village.
Photo: Sabah Gurmat
Both Suleiman and Patel had moved the high court,
seeking compensation and regularisation of their homes, but even as they await
the next hearing, all work has come to a standstill. For many, their work has
now effectively stopped for good, and that’s why they want to go back to their
villages.
Since relocating from Harshad and Navadra to the village
of Rupan, we have submitted an application requesting permission for boat
parking. However, we are still being directed from one authority to another
without resolution.
“Our primary need is a place for parking our boats and
a bandar (port) for us to operate. We no longer seek compensation for our
homes; we simply ask for the opportunity to fish. If we were granted permission
to return to our villages and continue our livelihoods, we would do so without
hesitation,” Patel said.
Patel and his sons were engaged in the intermediary
role of purchasing and transporting fish, subsequently selling it within the
Porbandar city. “Before these demolitions, I along with my sons and two
brothers were earning as much as Rs 2 lakh a month. This isn’t the case anymore.”
While discussing the current issue, activist Sherasiya
was reminded of how communal tensions have escalated in the region for decades,
with the 1986 riots, leading to the death of 13 people, in the coastal town of
Veraval. “Most of the victims back then were also Muslims. Even though the
community has enjoyed prosperity from this trade, they have also been at the
receiving end of resentment. And denying them the right to fish, to park their
boats and allot them a convenient space is only because of religious
resentment”, he said.
Patel added that he and his family members had kept
some of their belongings in the houses of their Hindu neighbours, the ones who
weren’t sent notices. “However, now even our household supplies have been taken
by them. Our homes were demolished and then trucks filled with our belongings –
including some of our boats – were sold in the market. In Navadravillage, at
least five to six of our village’s best boats were sold off to the Kharwa Hindu
fishermen of Porbandar, without us having any say on the matter,” he said.
Thimmar echoed this sentiment, saying, “Either grant
us permission to fish and park our boats, or grant us permission to die. We
have only been trying to earn a living.”

Iran Arrests Six For Planning ‘Riots’ On Mahsa Amini
Death’s Anniversary

TEHRAN: Authorities in Iran’s southwest have arrested
six people accused of “organizing riots” on the first anniversary of Mahsa
Amini’s death in custody which triggered nationwide protests, state media
reported Saturday.
Amini, an Iranian Kurd, died on September 16, 2022,
after her arrest in Tehran for alleged breach of the Islamic republic’s strict
dress rules for women.
The intelligence organization of the Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad province
suspended five social media pages and arrested the six individuals behind them,
it said according to official news agency IRNA.
IRGC accused them of “organizing riots and driving
insecurity on the Internet,” the statement said without identifying the
suspects.
“The individuals were active during last year’s riots
and have criminal records,” it added.
“Concurrent with attempts of the enemies to create
chaos on the anniversary of last year’s riots, the administrators of these five
social media pages were planning gatherings to create disturbances in the
coming days.”
Demonstrations across Iran in the months that followed
Amini’s death saw hundreds of people killed, including dozens of security
personnel, and thousands arrested in connection with what officials labeled as
foreign-instigated “riots.”
The latest arrests came days after the IRGC’s
intelligence body and Tehran’s intelligence ministry announced they had “identified
and dealt a blow” to a “riot-organizing network that was being financially
supported by the US State Department.”
Members of the alleged network were accused of
attempts “to prepare and present an agenda for rioters to revive the atmosphere
of tension and disturbance,” according to a joint statement issued on
Wednesday.

Saudi Crown Prince’s India Visit Puts Convergence Of
Views And Interests In The Spotlight

and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi

SANJAY KUMAR
September 09, 2023
NEW DELHI: Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman arrived in New Delhi on Saturday morning to lead the Kingdom’s
delegation to the G20 leaders’ summit and for a state visit to India.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a
statement on Saturday that the first leaders’ meeting of the council is
expected to take place on Monday and will be co-chaired by the crown prince and
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“They will discuss all aspects of bilateral relations
including political, security, defense, trade and economic, cultural and
people-to-people ties. Both the leaders will also discuss regional and
international issues of mutual interest.”
This is the Saudi crown prince’s second official trip
to New Delhi, following a visit in February 2019, which lifted Saudi-Indian
relations to new heights.
In October that year, Modi reciprocated with a visit
to Riyadh, where the two countries agreed to establish the Strategic
Partnership Council to manage the relationship
This time it is the economy that is expected to be the
main focus of the crown prince’s visit, especially as it follows the G20 summit
— the key annual meeting of the world’s biggest economies — and will coincide
with the Saudi-India Investment Forum in New Delhi, co-hosted by the Saudi
Ministry of Investment on Sept. 11.
The forum is part of an initiative designed to attract
investment to Saudi Arabia in line with Vision 2030 and the National Investment
Strategy.
“It’s a very significant visit, for a host of
reasons,” Kabir Taneja, strategic affairs program fellow at the Observer
Research Foundation in New Delhi, told Arab News. “The fact that India is
hosting the crown prince immediately after the G20 showcases the importance of the
visit.
“There are multiple sorts of facets to the bilateral
relations between India and Saudi Arabia. But, first and foremost, I think
right now it’s economics.”
He said that both countries were looking to find
external investors and “like-minded countries to work with, find like-minded
countries to partner with on economic prosperity for their respective
populations,” but also to work together in the global geopolitical landscape,
where economics has become the crux of many things.
“So this is a very opportune time for both countries
to sit down and talk economics. We are also hearing that there’s going to be a
special sort of roundtable on investments.”
From the Indian side, another important issue likely
to be raised during the crown prince’s visit is energy. According to Taneja,
India’s increasing reliance on oil imports is “something that is critical for
New Delhi to factor into all kinds of geopolitics and geo-economics it wants to
work around.”
“The visit highlights the growing shared interests
between India and Saudi Arabia on various global issues,” Mohammed Soliman,
strategic technologies director at the Middle East Institute in Washington DC,
told Arab News.
“Riyadh and Delhi actively cooperate on regional
stability and integration, energy security, and economic collaboration. Saudi
Arabia plays a significant role in the G20, having assumed the G20 presidency
in 2020.
“The visit also provides an opportunity for
highlighting Saudi Arabia’s viewpoints on global issues, including energy,
climate change, and economic cooperation, positioning Saudi Arabia as a major
player in the G20’s efforts to embrace diverse perspectives beyond the G7.”

A leading Muslim group has condemned the desecration
of the Quran outside the Turkish House in New York City, which houses Türkiye’s
consulate general and UN mission.
We condemn this apparent attempt to desecrate the
Quran – a sacred text followed by millions of Americans – and ask religious and
political leaders of all faiths and backgrounds to stand with the American
Muslim community in repudiation of the growing bigotry and division we are
witnessing nationwide
That was after a suspect threw a copy of the Quran to
the ground and kicked it outside of the Turkish House early Friday. Turkish
House security personnel removed the suspect from the premises.
A video circulating on social media showed the suspect
throwing a book on the ground and trampling on it while shouting: "This is
a Quran."
Recent Quran burnings in Sweden and Denmark, under the
pretext of free speech, have sparked angry protests in Muslim countries,
including attacks on diplomatic missions.
Nasher said on Saturday CAIR-NY and the American
Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white
supremacy, anti-Jewish hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and
all other forms of bigotry.
In July, CAIR urged President Joe Biden and Swedish
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to clearly disavow anti-Muslim bigotry and
condemn a Quran burning that took place in Sweden.

Varanasi court denied us opportunity to explore
remedies, says Gyanvapi mosque panel lawyer
July 24, 2023
By Shahnaz Parveen Mahrose for Muslim Mirror
New Delhi: The Gyanvapi mosque managing committee
claimed its right to appeal was “frustrated” by the Varanasi district court,
which without giving it time to explore legal remedies against its July 21
order, directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out a
“scientific investigation/survey/excavation” of the ancient mosque to ascertain
whether the “present structure” was “constructed over a pre-existing structure
of a Hindu temple”.
The ASI was directed to submit a report to the court before
August 4.
Allowing an application filed four Hindu women
petitioners, seeking the right to worship Maa Shringar Gauri on the outer wall
of the Gyanvapi mosque complex, District and Sessions Judge Dr Ajaya Krishna
Vishvesha passed the order at 4:30 pm on Friday.
Complying the order, four teams of the ASI —
comprising a total of its 30 members — descended in the mosque premise early on
Monday morning and began the probe.
Denied a “breathing time”, the Anjuman Islamia Masajid
(AIM) — the managing committee of the mosque — approached the Supreme Court,
praying a stay on the lower court’s order.

G20 summit: Transform trust deficit into confidence,
PM Modi says
Sep 10, 2023
NEW DELHI: PM Modi on Saturday called upon G20
countries to remedy the "global trust deficit" caused by the pandemic
and the conflict in Ukraine, and said a unified approach alone could help the
world devise solutions to the multiple crises facing it.
"After Covid-19, a huge crisis of lack of trust
has come in the world. Conflict has deepened it," the PM said in a blunt
reference to the divisions that hindered a joint global response to the virus
as well as the military confrontation over Ukraine, leading to loss of lives,
inflation and a revival of the threat of a nuclear conflagration.
The PM made no specific reference to the Ukraine war
but for many, the choice of the singular for "conflict" was seen as
meant for it; also because Russia's conduct loomed large over the
proceedings.Modi, however, expressed confidence the trust deficit could be
bridged by partnerships forged in mutual trust that seek to take everyone along
and pool the efforts of all. "Just as we can overcome Covid, we can
overcome the crisis of mutual trust. Today, as the G20 president, India invites
the world to come together and, first and foremost, transform the trust deficit
into trust and confidence," he said in his opening remarks at the summit.

In a 1st, scientists map how chikungunya affects
Indians
Sep 10, 2023
MUMBAI: For the first time, local scientists have
mapped out how chikungunya - a "back-breaking" viral fever caused by
the same mosquitoes that spread the deadly dengue virus - affects Indians
across various states. One of the findings is that rashes, globally considered a
common symptom of chikungunya, made an appearance in India recently. And, the
chikungunya virus (CHIKV) rashes are more likely in patients in Chandigarh
than, say, in Maharashtra or Karnataka.
Doctors from 13 hospitals across 10 states, including
Maharashtra, collected samples from 196 patients and "grew" CHIKV in
laboratory to find, among other details, certain proteins associated with fast
growing viral loads.
The study, published in the latest edition of 'The
Lancet Regional Health - Southeast Asia', is a "significant step to
understand CHIKV", said one of the main authors Sujatha Sunil from the
Delhi-based International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.
"It highlights the role of specific molecules in disease severity and
offers a glimpse into how the virus replicates," she said. Co-author
Jayanthi Shastri, former head of microbiology at Nair Hospital, said
chikungunya's complexities are crucial for effective prevention and treatment.
"Most of chikungunya's symptoms mimic or overlap with dengue, except for
the joint pain that could linger in some for months or even years," she
said.

Sabka Saath: PM Modi welcomes African Union to G20
Sep 10, 2023
In a landmark achievement for India's G20 presidency,
the African Union (AU) got a permanent seat at the G20 high table with PM
Narendra Modi announcing it in his opening remarks at the leaders’ summit. Foreign
minister S Jaishankar escorted AU chair and Comoros President AzaliAssoumani to
his seat after Modi brought the ceremonial gavel down to invite AU to the
premier forum for global economic cooperation.
PM Modi also embraced Assoumani before guiding him to
his seat. Amid the gloom of Ukraine war, and its restraining effects on India's
G20 presidency, PM Modi had written to all G20 leaders in June seeking a
permanent membership for the 55-member continental group which is home to some
of the fastest growing economies in the world and has a combined GDP of $ 2.4
trillion.
"It was in the spirit of 'Sabka Saath' that India
proposed permanent membership for the African Union in the G20. I believe that
we all agree on this proposal," said PM Modi, as he invited the AU chair.
Foreign minister S Jaishankar later said it was a
matter of particular satisfaction that AU had become a member of G20 under
India’s presidency. "It’s in line with our priority to address the
concerns of the Global South," he said.

UAE boosts trade with Iran after eased restrictions on
business activity
Simeon Kerr
10-09-2023
Trade between Iran and the United Arab Emirates has
surged as the Gulf’s commercial capital eased restrictions on business activity
between the two neighbours, business people and officials say.
Executives said the UAE has in recent months rolled
back limits on corporate registrations and the issuance of visas to companies
from Iran, which remains subject to tough US sanctions. Iranian financiers are
also exploring how to enhance bilateral trade by creating financial mechanisms
to fund legitimate transactions, they added.
Flourishing trade relations between Iran and the UAE,
the traditional centre for re-exports into the Islamic republic, forms part of
the Gulf state’s pivot towards regional de-escalation and a focus on business.
This comes after a decade of muscular interventionism in the wake of the Arab
spring uprisings of 2011.
“UAE foreign policy seems to have shifted toward one
that is primarily driven by economic statecraft,” said AfshinMolavi, senior
fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in
the US, while adding that current and future sanctions on Iran would temper
this growth.

'I have a lot of regrets': Exclusive interview with
top general who oversaw Afghanistan withdrawal
By Jennifer Griffin
September 9, 2023
In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Marine Corps
Gen. Frank McKenzie, the former head of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), put the
withdrawal from Afghanistan bluntly: "I believe history is going to view
the decision to come out of Afghanistan in the way that we did and the manner
that we were directed to come out as a fatal flaw," McKenzie said.
Now retired, McKenzie was commander of U.S. Central
Command, the combatant command of the Middle East, from March 2019 to April
2022. He oversaw the largest evacuation in U.S. history, evacuating an
estimated 124,000 Afghans from the country before the Taliban would take over
at the Aug. 31, 2021, deadline.
"I have a lot of regrets about how it ended in
Afghanistan. I have a regret with the basic decision, which I think was the
wrong decision. And I particularly regret that we did not choose to begin to
evacuate our people, our embassy personnel, our American citizens and our
at-risk Afghans at the time we made the decision to bring in our combat forces.
I think that was a serious mistake, and I think that led to the events of
August 2021 directly," McKenzie said.

Afghanistan is the fastest-growing maker of
methamphetamine, UN drug agency says
BY RIAZAT BUTT
September 10, 2023
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Afghanistan is the world’s
fastest-growing maker of methamphetamine, a report from the United Nations drug
agency said Sunday. The country is also a major opium producer and heroin
source, even though the Taliban declared a war on narcotics after they returned
to power in August 2021.
The United Nations’ Office on Drugs and Crimes, which
published the report, said meth in Afghanistan is mostly made from legally
available substances or extracted from the ephedra plant, which grows in the
wild.
The report called Afghanistan’s meth manufacturing a
growing threat to national and regional health and security because it could
disrupt the synthetic drug market and fuel addiction. It said seizures of meth
suspected to have come from Afghanistan have been reported from the European
Union and east Africa.

Deadlock Persists in Reopening Pakistan-Afghan Border
Gate

September 09, 2023
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban
authorities have met multiple times in the last week to negotiate the reopening
of their main border crossing but could not make headway, stranding many trade
convoys and travelers on both sides for the fourth consecutive day Saturday.
Pakistani officials said the standoff erupted
Wednesday after Taliban guards began constructing a new outpost near the
historic Torkham border crossing, violating mutual agreements and ignoring
warnings to stop the work.
The tensions eventually led to brief skirmishes
between border security forces from the two countries, killing a Taliban guard

Ordinary U.S. Muslims Are Still Being Victimized by
the ‘War on Terror’
Maha Hilal
Sep. 10, 2023
Few travelers would likely be familiar with the
meaning of “SSSS” if it was stamped on their boarding passes at the airport. If
you’re Muslim, however, this has probably happened to you or someone you know
in the last two decades because of the terrorist watchlist that was implemented
post-9/11.
While the watchlist reportedly has over 1.6 million
names on it, it has continued to insidiously operate in the background of most
people’s travel experiences in and through the U.S.
The watchlist made news last month because of a
lawsuit brought by Farid Sulayma, an American and Muslim leader living in
Seattle. Singled out for scrutiny each time he travels, Sulayma cannot check-in
online, is routinely pulled aside for additional searches, and has been
questioned, cuffed, and detained for hours simply for trying to get where he
needs to go. Like many other Muslims, he is a victim of a national security
policy that has evaded accountability, but which continues to exist as a way of
perpetuating the humiliation, demonization, and otherization of Muslims.
While the post-9/11 context has brought many critical
discussions about human and civil rights in the implementation of national
security policies, the terrorism watchlist—billed as a preventive measure—has
managed to operate outside of many of these constraints. Built on the
presumption of guilt until proven innocent, not only are those put on the list
unaware of their placement, but the government will also neither confirm nor
deny that a person’s name is on the list.
The threshold to be placed on the watchlist is
distressingly low, relying on “reasonable suspicion to believe that the person
is a known or suspected terrorist.” Though the government claims that it has
“safeguards” in place to prevent someone’s unwarranted inclusion on the list,
these measures were built on the deliberate and systematic erosion of the
rights of those targeted—disproportionately Muslim—whose abuse has been
institutionalized and rendered inconsequential.

Elon Musk's X sues California over a law it claims is
aimed at eliminating 'problematic' content
Jyoti Mann
10-09-2023
Elon Musk's X Corp is suing the state of California
over a content moderation law that imposes new transparency regulations on
social media companies.
The state law, Assembly Bill 587, requires companies
such as X to disclose their policies for combating disinformation and say how
they moderate harassment, hate speech, and extremism on their platforms.
The company argued in the lawsuit filed Friday that it
infringed its freedom of speech, protected by both the First Amendment of the
US Constitution and California's state constitution, as it "compels
companies like X Corp. to engage in speech against their will."

American porn star Stormi Daniels alleged that she had
been "threatened" and "bullied" by former President Donald
J. Trump's goons back in 2018. The adult film actress appeared on The View to
share a graphic sketch of the thug who terrorized her to keep mum about her
alleged affair with the US president. She revealed a lot more during her sit-down
at the talk show.
"I am done being bullied," said Daniels as
the show began. She, alongside her attorney, Michael Avenatti, released a
sketch of a "mystery man" whose face she recalled based on her
memory. The goon threatened her while she was with her baby in a parking lot in
2011.
Daniels recalled, "I remember him saying like,
'It's a beautiful little girl, would be ashamed if something happened to her
mom.'" She added that he then terrorized her saying, "'Forget about
this story, leave Mr. Trump alone.' It didn't even register it to me at first,
and then he turned and walked away." She continued to reveal that his face

PDM’s ‘sly response’ outlines fate of cases after NAO
changes
Nasir Iqbal
September 10, 2023
ISLAMABAD: Presented with a final opportunity to give
its views on the ongoing case against changes to the anti-graft law in the
Supreme Court, the former PDM coalition government, in a rather puckish
response, said that while the ongoing corruption cases will still be tried by
different courts, “being a parliamentarian was not an offence in Pakistan”.
The reference was part of the reply submitted before a
three-judge Supreme Court bench by senior counsel Makhdoom Ali Khan, who has
been representing the — now former — federal government.
To legal observers, the reply’s sardonic undertones
were “a subtle commentary” on the discussions that took place in the court as
it heard PTI chief Imran Khan’s plea against the amendments to the National
Accountability Ordinance (NAO).
The case is in its final stages as earlier this week,
the three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata
Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah had reserved
its ruling.

Perikatan rejects PM Anwar’s claim, says Parliament

By Ida Lim
10 Sep 2023
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Parliament can actually debate
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s release from the
YayasanAkalbudi trial through a court order for the latter’s discharge without
amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) of all 47 charges, federal opposition
PerikatanNasional (PN) has said.
PN’s parliamentary chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin
Hassan last night also criticised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s
rejection of a parliamentary debate on Zahid’s case, claiming that Anwar’s
action was in breach of laws and allegedly a “clear abuse of powers”.
Takiyuddin said that it is solely within the Dewan
Rakyat Speaker’s jurisdiction and discretion to decide whether to accept or
reject a motion to debate Zahid’s case, also saying that the prime minister —
despite his role as head of Parliament’s council — does not have any powers or
right to determine or decide based on the Dewan Rakyat’s standing order if
there are any motions raised to debate the matter.

DAP, Amanah: Twin Johor victories show voters’
rejection of PN’s political exploitation of religion
By Ida Lim
10 Sep 2023
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 —The double victory of
PakatanHarapan (PH) candidates for the unity government in yesterday’s
by-elections for Pulai and SimpangJeram in Johor shows that voters reject
federal opposition PerikatanNasional’s (PN) exploiting of religion for political
purposes, two PH leaders have said.
Johor DAP vice chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, who
is also DAP central executive committee (CEC) member, said the electoral
victories in the two Johor seats “give the signal that Johor’s people do not
accept politics that excessively uses religion.”
“I give the warning, politics using religion as a tool
is something that is very irresponsible. It will only blemish (mencalarkan) the
sanctity of Islam. More dangerously, it can plant the seeds of extremism that
would cause our unity to collapse,” he said in a statement today.
Sheikh Umar urged PN to refocus and to be a
constructive opposition coalition, and to play a role in helping the government
restore the economy and to propose good policies, and to stop “manipulating religion
for political interests” which he said will only cause losses to both the
country and citizens.

'Islamic Coin's Legitimacy as a Sharia-Compliant
Cryptocurrency Is Proven by Its Fatwa' — Co-Founder
by Terence Zimwara
10-09-2023
According to Mohammed AlKaffAlHashmi, the co-founder
of “Islamic Coin,” Muslim scholars will increasingly view cryptocurrencies as
being “Shariah-compliant” if they function as a store of value or are used as a
medium of exchange. Alhashmi added that Islam’s “robust” ethical framework
already “accommodates modern technological advancements such as the blockchain
and cryptocurrencies.” This, he said, may help explain the gradual acceptance
of unbacked digital assets by some in the Islamic community.
Despite this changed perception towards
cryptocurrencies, many Islamic-themed digital tokens that were launched in the
past have seemingly failed to emulate the success of pioneering coins like
bitcoin (BTC) or ethereum (ETH). In contrast, Alhashmi’sislamic coin appears to
have garnered substantial financial support as evidenced by the $200 million in
funding recently secured from ABO Digital.
When asked why islamic coin has seemingly done better,
AlHashmi pointed to how the project’s multifaceted approach broadens its “reach
and enhances our value proposition.” The co-founder also argued that the coin’s
apparent success on the funding front can be seen as a testament to the Islamic
community’s approval of this approach.

OIC calls on int’l community to reject so-called

the so-called "elections" in Karabakh, Trend reports.
"The so-called 'elections' held in the Karabakh

Inside Botany Bay, the century-old mill which became

ByJamie Lopez
9 SEP 2023
It is a building which holds memories for many
Mancunians. Whether heading there for a day out, or driving past it on the way
to Blackpool, Botany Bay is a venue that is immediately recognisable.
During various different incarnations the five-storey
mill, which dates back to 1885, was best known as a shopping centre, complete
with the Puddletown Pirates children's play area, also featuring a garden
centre, café and restaurant. It opened as a shopping centre in 1995 and became
much loved for family day outs before closing in 2019.
It is currently used as office space, with a
multi-billion pound international firm using the mill as its headquarters, and
has therefore been closed off to the general public. But huge changes are afoot
at the mill, just off the M61 in Chorley, with people set to be able to return
to the memorable building, Lancs Live reports.

Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum condemns Armenia's

9 September 2023
MaryanaAhmadova
BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 9. The Eurasian Regional
Center of the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum has strongly condemned Armenia's
provocative actions, which artificially ignite tensions and ultimately derail
the normalization process, Trend reports.
"ICYF-ERC strongly condemns the illegal activities
named as “elections” held in the Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan
by the puppet separatist regime supported and established by the Republic of
Armenia. This step is a flagrant violation of norms and principles of
international law as well as the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Republic of Armenia’s continuous support for the
puppet separatist regime, including the existence of the illegal Armenian armed
forces among many other illegal activities in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan,
not only constitutes a violation of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and
sovereignty but also deals a serious blow to the efforts of normalization in
the region and the reintegration of ethnic Armenians living in the Karabakh
region into the constitutional framework of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
ICYF-ERC calls for the unconditional and complete withdrawal of the Armenian
armed forces from the Garabagh region of Azerbaijan and disbandment of the

Uganda Issues First Islamic Banking License in Boost
to Sector
10-09-2023
(Bloomberg) -- Uganda’s central bank has issued its
first Islamic banking license since the country passed legislation to
accommodate Shariah-compliant finance activities in June.
The license went to Salaam Bank Ltd., a unit of
Djibouti-based Salaam African Bank, the Bank of Uganda said in a statement
Friday.
The adoption of Islamic finance, which doesn’t allow
the charging of interest, could unlock significant growth in East Africa’s
third-biggest economy by attracting customers who have avoided traditional
lenders on religious grounds. Shariah-compliant assets are among the world’s fastest-growing
financial instruments and are forecast to reach $3 trillion worldwide in the
next decade, from about $2.1 trillion at the end of 2016.

AMIZMIZ, MOROCCO: Moroccan earthquake survivors
huddled for a night in the open on the High Atlas Mountains on Saturday, a day
after the country's deadliest earthquake in more than six decades killed over
1,300 people and laid waste to villages.
Neighbours were still searching for survivors buried

open and mosque minarets toppled by the quake that struck late on Friday. The
historic old city of Marrakech also suffered extensive damage.
The Interior Ministry said 1,305 people had been
killed and 1,832 injured by the quake, gauged by the US Geological Survey at a
magnitude of 6.8 with an epicentre some 72 km (45 miles) southwest of Marrakech.
In the village of Amizmiz near the epicentre, rescue
workers picked through rubble with their bare hands. Fallen masonry blocked
narrow streets. Outside a hospital, around 10 bodies lay covered in blankets as
grieving relatives stood nearby.
