----------
Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday alleged that the “Muslim
reservation” in Telangana is an insult to the Constitution made by Dr B R Ambedkar.
Addressing
a poll rally in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district in Telangana, he said the
reservation to Muslims is “unconstitutional” and it should not be allowed to be
implemented at any cost. “But both the BRS and Congress want to take the
country towards a new division,” he alleged.

It
can be another way: Jews and Muslims can live peacefully
By
Bilal Cleland

November 2023
Jews,
Christians and Muslims praying together in a mosque in London, England (image
via YouTube)
-----------
Here
in Australia, we have otherwise intelligent politicians promoting the notion
that the Muslims and other supporters of Palestine are a threat to Jews, while
the only act of violence so far has been the arson attack on a
Palestinian-Australian burger shop.
'The
Bundestag… would discuss two draft laws that propose imposing strict penalties
for alleged antisemitic expression and making citizenship conditional on
recognising Israel and keeping clear of criticising it.'
While
Europe, not just Germany might feel it has a responsibility to protect Jews
given its history, it has in my opinion extended that protection to Zionism.
As
many Jewish commentators have explained and as many Jewish organisations are
now demonstrating, Israel is not synonymous with the Jews, just as the numerous
self-proclaimed Islamic republics are not synonymous with Islam.
In
response to the diatribe by Pope Benedict XVI in his Regensburg Address,
including that Islam was spread by the sword, he said this was a myth long
promulgated in Europe but suiting the U.S. needs of the time.
'In
this sense, the quote serves exactly the requirements of the present Emperor,
George Bush II. He, too, wants to unite the Christian world against the mainly
Muslim "Axis of Evil".'
"Every
honest Jew who knows the history of his people cannot but feel a deep sense of
gratitude to Islam, which has protected the Jews for fifty generations, while
the Christian world persecuted the Jews and tried many times 'by the sword' to
get them to abandon their faith.”
As
Heraclius was taking revenge on the Jews for their support of the Persian enemy
in Jerusalem in 614, Islam was rising. Forced from the city, Heraclius
recaptured it in 629 and carried out a massacre of Jews, then banned them from
the city.
In
632, after a dream or a prophecy, in which he was told the circumcised ones
would take the Byzantine Empire, he ordered the conversion of all Jews to
Christianity.
Tabloid
interviewer Piers Morgan has reduced the complexities of the Hamas/Israel
conflict to a made-for-TV moral drama, seeking ratings and celebrity status.
'In
Baghdad, there are about 40,000 Jews, and they dwell in security, prosperity
and honour under the great Caliph, and amongst them are great sages, the heads
of Academies engaged in the study of the law.'
'As
is well known, under Muslim rule the Jews of Spain enjoyed a bloom the like of
which the Jews did not enjoy anywhere else until almost our time… In Muslim
Spain, Jews were ministers, poets, scientists.'
And
when the Catholics took all of Spain, Muslims and Jews fled and Jews were
welcomed into the Muslim lands where they remained until today, some still
speaking Ladino.
The
response of the Muslims in North Africa to the Third Reich is detailed by
Robert Satloff in Among the Righteous. He undertook this work in order to
counter the growth of Holocaust denial amongst Arab nationalists but it
demonstrated that Islamic principles had not disappeared by the 1940s.
Jewish
Voice for Peace and the Orthodox Jews who emphasise the Torah not Zionism are a
feature of that movement, along with Christians and atheists.
The
Israeli violence we witness on the West Bank is more similar to the gang
violence of New York than to Judaism, but then many of the colonisers are from
the gun-loving Land of the Free.
The
attacks on the people of Gaza, combined with attempts at propaganda over the
destruction of the Al Shifa Hospital, have done irreparable harm to Israel.

NYC
Muslim cop’s anti-terrorism dreams dashed by xenophobic higher-ups: suit
Tina
Moore
Nov.
25, 2023
Police
Officer Ahmed Elmenshawy, 33, said he joined the NYPD in hopes of fighting
terrorism in the Intelligence Division.
------------
A
Muslim NYPD cop is suing the NYPD after a boss told him not to speak Arabic —
the second time the supervisor has been sued for telling officers not to speak
their native languages, according to a lawsuit.
Police
Officer Ahmed Elmenshawy, who came to the U.S. in 2010 from Egypt, left a tech
job that paid $150,000-a-year to join the NYPD in 2016 because he wanted to
join the Intelligence Division and fight terrorism, he said.
He
would regularly talk to his mom on the phone and an Egyptian coworker in
Arabic, which angered then-Assistant Chief of Personnel John Benoit, he claims
in the lawsuit.
“It
was just annoying him so much,” the cop told The Post. “He would make comments
like, ‘We speak English here. This is America. I can’t understand what you’re
saying.'”
The
33-year-old, with a masters from Pace University, worked four years in Staten
Island’s 122 Precinct before applying to the prestigious Intelligence Division,
but was denied the post, according to the Nov. 24 lawsuit filed in Manhattan
Supreme Court.
Officer
Elmenshawy says when he would speak Arabic on the phone with his mother,
then-Assistant Chief of Personnel John Benoit would tell him, “We speak English
here. This is America.” .
Lt.
Junior Carela, a commanding officer in the same division, has also sued the
NYPD, claiming in an April lawsuit that Benoit transferred him for speaking too
much Spanish.
When
Jones retired earlier this year, Benoit was promoted and took her job as chief
of personnel. Elemenshawy was sent back to the122 Precinct on patrol, where he
remains — despite Jones’s recommendation that he be moved to the intelligence
unit.
“Honestly,
I feel like I wasted seven years of my life and got injured on top of that,”
said Elemenshawy. “The best years of my life, my 20s and 30s. They wonder why
they can’t recruit.”
Lawyer
John Scola, who filed the lawsuits, said Benoit and the NYPD removed “highly
trained and educated officers due solely to their race and national origin.”

Militants
with ties to the Islamic State group kill at least 14 farmers in an attack in
east Congo
JEAN-YVES
KAMALE
25
November 2023
KINSHASA,
Congo (AP) — Militants from a shadowy extremist organization with ties to the
Islamic State Group killed at least 14 farmers in Congo’s hard-hit eastern
region, a local official said Saturday.
The
Allied Democratic Forces attacked Mamove village in North Kivu province on
Friday night where they beheaded the farmers working on their fields, said
Samson Simara, a delegate of the provincial governor.
“This
death toll could rise because other farmers are missing,” he told local media,
adding that the militants also burned down several houses in the village.
Armed
violence in eastern Congo has been simmering for decades as more than 120
groups fight for power, land and valuable mineral resources, while others try
to defend their communities, but it spiked in late 2021 when another rebel
group, that goes by M23 and had been largely dormant, resurfaced and initiated
attacks to seize land.
The
attacks have heightened tensions ahead of Congo’s presidential election in
December, with many residents in affected communities afraid for their safety.
Congolese
President Felix Tshisekedi, who seeks reelection, has said rebel-controlled
territories might not participate in the December vote for security reasons.
The
ADF has recently increased its attacks in Congo. The group is also suspected of
being behind the June massacre where 41 people were killed, mostly students, in
neighboring Uganda.

Pakistani
Islamist parties tap electorate anger over Israel-Hamas war
ADNAN
AAMIR
November
26, 2023
Women
wave flags as they gather in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza during a
rally in Karachi on Oct. 20.
-----------
ISLAMABAD
-- Pakistan's Islamist political parties are playing up support for the
Palestinian group Hamas in its war with Israel, aiming to tap into domestic
public anger as the country prepares for elections early next year.
After
Hamas militants triggered the latest round of the conflict by storming from
Gaza into Israel and killing an estimated 1,200 people in early October,
Pakistan's caretaker government adopted a relatively measured tone, urging
restraint and the protection of civilians. As Israel's retaliation has killed
more than 13,000 in Gaza, according to Hamas health officials, the Pakistani
administration has hardened its rhetoric but not gone far beyond boilerplate
condemnations of Israel, with which it has no diplomatic relations.
Among
the general public, meanwhile, images of devastation from Gaza have struck a
chord and appear to have deepened already pervasive anti-Israel sentiment. A
survey by Gallup Pakistan this month found that 91% of respondents backed Hamas
in the conflict, while only 2% expressed support for Israel. A youth-led
boycott campaign against Western companies, seen as being aligned with Israel,
is gaining traction.
It
is in this climate that Islamist parties are seeking to expand their voter
bases, with Pakistan's general election now slated for Feb. 8.
Jamiat
Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F), Pakistan's largest Islamist party, is at the
forefront of supporting Hamas. Molana Fazal ur Rehman, the chief of JUI-F,
traveled to Doha on Nov. 5 to meet Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled
Mashal and expressed solidarity with them.
"I
am proud of our leader, Molana Fazal ur Rehman, who is doing his best to help
our Muslim brothers in Gaza," Noorullah, a 25-year-old supporter of JUI-F,
told Nikkei Asia. "That's why my family will continue voting for
[JUI-F]."
Other
Islamist parties, such as Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and Jamaat-e-Islami
(JI), have also held huge rallies in support of Hamas. Siraj ul Haq, the JI
chief, visited Doha on Nov. 12 and met Hamas' top leadership.
Experts
say the optics of meeting Hamas officials in Doha are important for these parties,
as they seek an advantage over the mainstream forces in Pakistani politics --
the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of former prime ministers Nazaz and
Shehbaz Sharif, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of jailed former
leader Imran Khan and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
"Since
mainstream parties such as PTI, PML-N, and PPP are not raising the issue of
Gaza, Islamist parties not only plan to get votes [based] on this issue but
also donations in the name of Palestine," said Sabookh Syed, an
independent analyst in Islamabad who covers religious extremism.
Donation
collection booths can be found scattered around Islamabad, mainly set up by
Islamist parties that say the proceeds will be used to help Palestinians in
Gaza.
"Pakistan
is currently trapped in its own internal problems, making it difficult for the
country to take an aggressive stand on external matters such as the Gaza
conflict," said Khalid Rahman, chairman of the Institute of Policy
Studies, an Islamabad think tank. "Still, the people of Pakistan are not
happy with the government's approach on Palestine."
"The
Western products boycott movement in Pakistan is taking place on a huge scale,
which represents the sentiments of the people of Pakistan about
Palestine," he said. "Due to the severity of Israel's atrocities,
this boycott campaign will be long-lasting in Pakistan."
Israel
says its military operations, including airstrikes and a ground campaign, are
necessary to cripple Hamas and prevent a repeat of the Oct. 7 attack, which
left hundreds of civilians dead including in border communities and at a music
festival. But many in the international community have sharply criticized the
heavy price Palestinian civilians are now paying. Israel and Hamas paused
fighting on Friday to enable the release of some Israeli hostages and allow
humanitarian aid into Gaza.
In
the past, boycott campaigns against Western products were typically led by
Islamists, but this time young Pakistanis on social media are playing a key
role.
Kainaat
Binte Faisal, 25, a graduate student in Islamabad, has stopped using products
from multiple Western multinationals. "I am a citizen of a country that
can't directly help Palestinians," she said. "Boycott is the least I
can do."
In
this context, Rahman said it was only natural for Islamist parties to adopt an
aggressive tone against Israel. "If the Islamist parties do not support
Palestinians then it would negatively affect their support base in
Pakistan," he said.
Husain
Haqqani, a former Pakistani ambassador and currently a scholar at Washington's
Hudson Institute, said that the events in Gaza have energized Islamists and
generated strong sentiments in Pakistan, but ultimately the polls will be about
the myriad domestic challenges facing the country.
He
said parties would likely use the "usual" arguments, such as,
"If we were in power, we would do more for the unity of the Muslim
ummah," or community. "But beyond that, I think Pakistan's election
will be decided on Pakistan's issues, not over the Gaza conflict."

Muslim
countries can still save Palestinians from Hamas - opinion
By
GINA ROSS
NOVEMBER
25, 2023
Most
Muslims believe that Hamas’ October 7 wanton actions go against Muslim values.
This is the time for Muslim Arab governments interested in development and
peace and in resolving the Palestinian conflict to stand up against Hamas and
save the Gaza Palestinians. They must decouple Hamas from the fate of the
Palestinian population.
Hamas
made unmistakably clear its genocidal intentions toward Israel and the Jewish
people. It also presented itself as even more depraved and evil than ISIS – and
proud of it.
Hamas’
struggle is not about a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Its call for jihad (holy war) to Muslims worldwide against Jews, Christians,
and moderate Muslims shows Hamas to be a terrorist organization with a
supremacist agenda that is a global danger.

15
years of 26/11: Remembering gruesome Mumbai terror attacks
Nov
26, 2023
NEW
DELHI: It's been 15 years since the devastating terrorist attacks that shook
India's financial capital, Mumbai, on November 26, 2008.
Commonly
referred to as 26/11, these coordinated assaults by a group of 10 terrorists
did mayhem on the streets of Mumbai and sent shockwaves through the nation and
the world.
Terrorists
from the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group had entered the city of Mumbai on
the night of November 26, 2008. Over the course of four days, they killed 166
people and injured 300.
The
targets were carefully chosen after being surveyed for maximum impact, viz.,
the Taj and Oberoi Hotels, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Jewish
centre at Nariman House, and the Leopold Cafe, since these places were
frequented by Europeans, Indians and Jews.

collaborating on an ambitious development project that will cover parts of

The

Asian
man 'forced to hide in shop' after street preacher's 'anti-Muslim comments'
By
Kerry Ashdown
26
NOV 2023
An
Asian man was forced to hide in a shop after a street preacher's 'anti-Muslim
comments' in a North Staffordshire town, a councillor has said. The revelation
came as Staffordshire Moorlands District Council approved a new code of conduct
for buskers and street preachers in Leek and Cheadle.
It
was drawn up following complaints about loud music and hateful comments. Anyone
performing or preaching will be limited to 30 minutes in any one location,
including breaks, and will not be able to return to the same spot within two
hours.
There
must also be a gap of at least 50m between performing or preaching groups - and
they are banned from behaving in a way that could cause alarm, distress or
offence to the public. They will also be asked to take regular breaks to enable

‘We

Swedish
authorities must be handed the power to requisition and demolish mosques that
are proven to be used to promote messages incompatible with Western values and
the country should impose a ban on the construction of new mosques, the leader
of the right-wing Sweden Democrats Jimmie Åkesson has claimed.
Speaking
at a party event in the southeastern Swedish city of Vasteras on Saturday,
Åkesson said that Islamic places of worship in Sweden are a breeding ground for
radicalized thought and the anti-West propaganda that is infiltrating the
country’s social fabric and sowing discord in Swedish communities.
“In
the long term, we need to start confiscating and demolishing mosque buildings

Muslim
Terrorist Front Group Falsely Accuses Phoenix Journalist of Death Threat
November
25, 2023
A
terrorist front group, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), has
falsely accused a Phoenix journalist of facilitating an alleged death threat
against Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).
CAIR
has been repeatedly identified as a conspirator for HAMAS, a designated Foreign
Terrorist Organization (FTO). In 2008, the FBI suspended relations with CAIR
due to its relationship as a co-conspirator with HAMAS, as identified in U.S.
v. the Holy Land Foundation. Over the past 20 years, several local and national
leaders of CAIR and its parent organization, Islamic Association for Palestine,
were imprisoned on terrorism-related charges (see: Muthana Al-Hanooti, Sami
Al-Arian, Abdurahman Alamoudi, Randall Todd Royer, Bassem Khafagi, and Rabih
Kaddad).
On
Tuesday, CAIR National posted a clipped screen recording of a “pro-Israel” X
Space (formerly Twitter Space) attended by Phoenix journalist Sean Campbell and
over 200 others in which an unverified and unidentified user approved to speak,
“George,” suggested that a shooter would have to be far away and not inside the
event. That individual was immediately reprimanded by another speaker and
removed from the online event.

‘Is
That Orwellian Or Kafkaesque Enough For You?’ The Guardian Removes Bin Laden’s
‘Letter To America’
By
David Cromwe
November
25, 2023
The
Guardian has long promoted itself as a valiant publisher of news and analysis
that holds the powerful to account. It is a thing of wonder that the Guardian
appends the following comment beneath news pieces:
A
new, significant example occurred just last week. On 15 November, the paper
removed Osama bin Laden’s ‘Letter to America’ which it had hosted on its
website for almost 21 years. What was suddenly so problematic about the letter
that it had to be abruptly removed by the Guardian after being on its website
for so long (an archived version can be seen here)?
The
deleted text was an English translation of bin Laden’s letter, first published
on a Saudi website linked to al-Qaeda, in November 2002, over one year after
the 9/11 attacks on the United States. The Guardian website published a full translation
on its website on 24 November 2002. The letter, addressed to the American
people, contains a detailed list of grievances against the US shared by many in
the Muslim world, explaining what motivated the 9/11 attacks.

China,
US exchange accusations over US vessel in South China Sea
Nov
26, 2023
BEIJING/SHANGHAI:
China and the United States exchanged accusations at the weekend over the
disputed South China Sea, after China's military said it had driven away a US
warship that the US Navy said was on a routine freedom of navigation operation.
According to a post on the official WeChat social media account of the Chinese
People's Liberation Army Southern Theatre Command on Saturday, the Chinese
military deployed its naval and air forces to "track, monitor and warn
away" the US destroyer.
The
US Navy said on Sunday that the Hopper had "asserted navigational rights
in the South China Sea near the Paracel Islands, consistent with international
law".
China
claims almost the entire South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion
of annual ship-borne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines,
Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The Permanent Court of Arbitration in
2016 said China's claims had no legal basis.

Pyongyang

Un-Islamic
marriage: Maneka asks court to punish Imran, Bushra
Ali
Hamza
November
26, 2023
ISLAMABAD -
Khawar Maneka, former husband of Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi,
Saturday challenged the former prime minister’s un-Islamic marriage with his
ex-wife in the district and sessions court.
The
development came only a day after petitioner Muhammad Hanif withdrew a similar
petition challenging the nikkah of the PTI chief due to technical reasons.
Maneka, who recently hit out at his former wife in a TV interview, termed the
PTI chief nikkah as fraudulent, saying the marriage was solemnised during the
iddat period (the time a woman goes into isolation after her husband dies or
divorces her). “That above said nikkah and marriage ceremony was neither legal
nor Islamic as it was solemnised without observing iddat period,” according to
the petition. In his petition, Maneka reiterated the allegations that he made
in the interview, accusing PTI chief Imran of ruining his entire life,
“stigmatised the complainant and his family just to achieve his unethical and
immoral objects through intrusion in complainant’s peaceful marital life..”
“In
light of above, it is humbly prayed that respondents No.1 [Imran Khan] and 2
[Bushra Bibi] be summoned and punished strictly in accordance with law in the
interest of justice,” the petitioner prayed to the court. Maneka also recorded
his statement before the civil judge and a hearing of the case has fixed been
for November 28 Mufti Saeed, Aun Chaudhry, and Muhammad Latif have been
nominated as witnesses in the petition.
In
the tell-all interview earlier this week, Maneka claimed that he holds Imran
Khan responsible for breaking up his ‘happy home’. Starting with the tale of
how his ex-wife and the former prime minister met, Maneka said they were
introduced by Bushra Bibi’s sister Maryam Wattoo.

Pakistan
court-martials retired officers for backing Imran
Nov
26, 2023
ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Army has court-martialed and sentenced two retired officers, Major
Adil Farooq Raja and Capt Haider Mehdi, to 14 and 12 years imprisonment for
“sedition” and “espionage”. Both former officers, known for their YouTube
campaigns in support of detained former PM Imran Khan, are unlikely to serve
the sentence as they reside outside of Pakistan, with Raja based in England and
Mehdi in Canada.
The
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media arm, issued a
statement on Saturday, saying the convictions and sentences were handed down
“under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952 for the charges of inciting sedition among
army personnel from discharge of duties and violation of the provisions of
Official Secrets Act, 1923 related to espionage and acts prejudicial to the
safety and interest of the state”.
The
sentences are believed to be linked to the events of May 9, during the arrest
of Imran Khan, which led to widespread violence and attacks on key military
installations. In June, both Raja and Mehdi were charged with inciting violence
during the May protests by the ex-PM’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

Iran
is facing condemnation from human rights groups as it executed a 17-year-old
named Hamidreza Azari for murder in the town of Sabzevar. The incident
reignited concerns about the country's practice of hanging individuals for
crimes committed during their minority.
The
execution took place on Friday (Nov 24) in a prison located in Sabzevar, Razavi
Khorasan province, according to statements from Norway-based Hengaw and Iran
Human Rights (IHR) groups.
Hengaw
and IHR, citing official documents, revealed that Azari was 16 years old at the
time of the crime and 17 when executed. Both groups said that Iran's action
violated the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which defines a child as

The
Turkestan Islamic Party's New Outreach Program: Translation and Overview
by
Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi
Nov
21, 2023
By
now, reports about the plight of Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region of western
China (East Turkestan) have become widespread on an international level. For
example, many mainstream media outlets in the West have run stories on Uyghurs
and reported on various forms of oppression they have faced at the hands of
China's government. In other words, the Uyghur cause has become much more
prominent on an international level, and this remains true even if much of the
global media focus right now is on Gaza or the response of Muslim countries
towards China on this issue has fallen far short of what one might expect of
'Muslim solidarity.'
The
group called the Turkestan Islamic Party, whose existence as a fighting force
is most visible in Syria where a branch was set up largely by Uyghur refugees
who had been residing in Turkey and then 'migrated' to Syria, provides China an
opportunity to frame its policies in Xinjiang as part of a fight against
terrorism and jihadism.

Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned against the potential of Iran supplying

Tehran from the international community to deter such a transfer.
“It

India
is falling behind other countries of the region in education and health.
Economist Jean Dreze has written a foreword to a forthcoming book by Swati
Narayan, “Unequal: Why India lags behind its neighbours.” Dreze notes that
Bangladesh has long overtaken India in life expectancy, fertility, child
mortality, sanitation, school participation and gender equality.
Initially
this was seen as a quirk, but the gap kept growing, proving deeply embarrassing
for India. This was attributed to special characteristics of Bangladesh such as
outstanding NGOs and strong public health interventions. Its per capita income
was also comparable with India’s.

China:
Mosques Shuttered, Razed, Altered In Muslim Areas, Says HRW
By
Eurasia Review
November
26, 2023
The
Chinese government is significantly reducing the number of mosques in Ningxia
and Gansu provinces under its “mosque consolidation” policy, in violation of
the right to freedom of religion, Human Rights Watch said.
Chinese
authorities have decommissioned, closed down, demolished, and converted mosques
for secular use as part of the government’s efforts to restrict the practice of
Islam. The authorities have removed Islamic architectural features, such as
domes and minarets, from many other mosques.
“The
Chinese government is not ‘consolidating’ mosques as it claims, but closing
many down in violation of religious freedom,” said Maya Wang, acting China
director at Human Rights Watch. “The Chinese government’s closure, destruction,
and repurposing of mosques is part of a systematic effort to curb the practice
of Islam in China.”

UN Using Afghanistan’s Seat to Pressure Kabul
By

Suhail
Shaheen, the head of the Islamic Emirate's Qatar-based Political Office, said
the UN acted without neutrality in determining the seat of Afghanistan.
In
an interview with RTA, Shaheen said that the UN uses Afghanistan’s seat in the
organization as pressure on the Islamic Emirate, urging the organization to
handover the seat to the current Afghan government.
“This
[UN] is a big organization and they always talk about law and legality and
human rights and they claim to be neutral, but they are not neutral in this
position,” he noted.

Afghanistan,
Pakistan: Ongoing protest activity likely to continue near Chaman-Spin Boldak
border crossing through at least early December /update 1
25
NOV 2023
Activists
will likely continue staging their ongoing series of sporadic protests near the
Chaman-Spin Boldak border crossing connecting Afghanistan and Pakistan through
at least early December. In recent days, thousands of activists have staged
various demonstrations, including sit-ins and road blockades, to denounce the
Pakistani government's decision to limit cross-border travel to those with a
valid passport and visa. As of Nov. 25, thousands of activists are continuing
an indefinite sit-in protest along a major thoroughfare connecting Chaman and
Quetta; the protest activity has resulted in renewed bilateral travel and
shipping service disruptions. Protest organizers have previously threatened to
continue to stage sit-in demonstrations until Pakistani authorities satisfy
their demand to rescind the decision. Similar demonstrations could occur in
Chaman and potentially spread to other areas. Potential gathering sites include
police stations, government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares.
Well-attended gatherings will probably draw thousands of participants.
Authorities
will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence near the impacted
border crossing. Officials could impose enhanced security restrictions,
including temporary border closures and/or public movement restrictions,
depending on protest developments. Isolated security incidents, including
small-scale bomb attacks, cannot be ruled out. Further transport disruptions
are likely. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Localized
business disruptions, including shipping delays, are possible if the civil
unrest persists.

Word | Afghan Refugees: A Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds in Pakistan as World
Looks the Other Way
By:
Arun Anand
NOVEMBER
26, 2023
While
the global media is abuzz with the images of an unfolding humanitarian crisis
in Gaza during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, another such crisis of a much
greater proportion is unfolding in Pakistan. But so far, the world hasn’t taken
notice the way it should have. Even the Islamic countries have decided to
ignore the threat of survival faced by no less than 1.7 million Afghan refugees
in Pakistan. An Islamic state is now targeting millions of Afghan Muslims and
there isn’t much noise about it except from the ruling Taliban in Afghanistan.
On
October 3, 2023, Pakistan’s interim Interior Minister, Sarfaraz Bugti, issued a
stern warning to the ‘illegal’ residents while urging them to pack their stuff
and leave Pakistan voluntarily by November 1, 2023. The military dictated that
the interim administration directly asked the undocumented residents,
particularly Afghans, “to willingly return to their” country, failing which
they will be deported by the law enforcement agencies. Though Islamabad has
asserted that its actions were not aimed at a particular community, however, it
is a given that this is directed at Afghans only, who have been demonised by
the state functionaries and political actors for all Pakistan ills.
This
was an unambiguous ultimatum to unleash a crackdown towards forcing mass return
of Afghans from the country unlike the past when various governments would
occasionally raise the issue. The immediate carte blanche offered by the
Pakistani establishment to justify this horrendous threat is the security of
the state, as it accused refugees of being involved “in funding, facilitating
terrorists and other illegal activities” and thereby threatening the security
and stability of the state. However, it is an open secret how the Pakistani
military-controlled establishment as well as its Army controlled civilian
governments has over the years made Afghan refugees scapegoats and used them as
casus belli to Pakistan’s deteriorating economic and security situation. The
establishment has successfully exploited this deflection strategy to escape
from accountability for its failures.
