Muslim-Christian clashes kill 5 in west Cairo

08, MAY 2011

CAIRO: Christians and Muslims fought in the streets of western Cairo on Saturday in violence triggered by word of a mixed romance, Egypt’s official news agency reported. At least five people were killed.

The clashes marked an escalation in tension between Egypt’s Muslims and its Coptic Christian minority that has coincided with uncertainty surrounding the country’s path after President Hosni Mubarak’s ouster in February.

Ultraconservative Muslims have renewed protests in recent days accusing the church of abducting the wife of a Coptic priest who the protesters believe converted to Islam. Copts answered back by holding their own rally Friday outside the Orthodox Church to protest what they said was the “targeting of the church.” The news agency said the violence Saturday broke out in the Imbaba neighborhood after word spread that a Christian woman had married a Muslim and was being held in a church against her will.

Hundreds of Muslims converged on the church to demand the woman be released, witnesses said. Copts stood outside the church protecting it. The witnesses said gunfire was exchanged in the melee, including from people shooting from rooftops.

Islamists threw firebombs, and some homes were burned near the church, they said. Crowds chanted, “With our souls and our blood we defend you, Islam.” Besides the dead, 54 people were injured, the news agency reported, quoting government medical official Abdel-Halim el-Behiri.

Egyptian, TV reported that the military and police were trying to break up the standoff. Witnesses said they used tear gas and fired into the air.

Mixed relationships are taboo in Egypt, where the Muslim majority and sizable Christian minority are both largely conservative. Such relationships are often the source of deadly clashes between the faiths.

If a Christian woman marries a Muslim, she is expelled from the church. A Muslim woman is not allowed to marry a Christian man, according to state law.

Because divorce is banned under the Coptic Church, unless under stringent conditions, many women resort to conversion as a way to get out of a marriage.

The case of Camilla Shehata, the wife of a Coptic priest, captivated attention last summer and has again become a source of tension.

Ultraconservative Muslims have held protests and appeared on talk shows demanding the return of Shehata to Islam.

They accused the police of collaborating with the church by handing Shehata over to church authorities to reconvert her.

On Saturday, Shehata appeared on a Christian TV station broadcast from outside of Egypt in a teleconference with her husband to say she was still a Christian and had never converted.

She said the protests were an attack on the church. “Let the protesters leave the Church alone and turn their attention to Egypt’s future.” The woman’s whereabouts is unknown.

Ultraconservative Muslims have gained prominence in Egypt, becoming more assertive in trying to spread their version of an Islamic way of life.

America is the Centre of Terrorism; Let the world Unite against its gangsterism: Maulana Habib ur Rahman Ludhianavi

By: New Age Islam News Bureau

08, MAY 2011

According to reports in the Urdu Press, National President of Majlise e Ahrare-e-Islami, Hind and Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Punjab, Maulana Habib ur Rahman Ludhianavi in his speech before the Friday sermon addressed the Muslims and said: “It is America which has been interfering in the Muslim countries’ national politics and has been killing and terrorizing  hundreds of thousands of people there. It is America which is the real terrorist although the western media have been engaged in false propaganda.” He said the countries and organizations which have been on its side can never tell the truth except the one who are not afraid of anyone except the God.

Talking to the local media after the Friday prayers, the Maulana Ludhianavi said, no one can be said to be a terrorist without proof. Replying to a question he said, if America has indeed killed Osama, why does it not bring out the photos or videos of his killing before the world. He said, in every religion and country, the deceased is given a rightful religious burial but America has shown its meanness in this respect also. He said, Islam and Muslims condemn every kind of terror acts. Islam and Sharia’h forbid killing of women, children, weak and religious leaders and scholars.

The Maulana went on to say: America and Israel are themselves in the background of terror acts like World Trade Centre and other sites and places of the world and are defaming a peace loving religion like Islam. America repeatedly talks of war against terrorism and itself kills hundreds of thousands of innocent people in places like Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. It has already killed 12 lakh people in its war against terrorism.” He said: “It talks of fighting terrorism on one hand and on the other supports a country like Pakistan. America says it is with our country India and supports Pakistan on Kashmir.”

Maulana Ludhianawi said “The world should not cooperate with Uncle Sam. It should rather stand against it and raise their voice against its gangsteriism.  Gangsters are never a friend of anybody and they will keep looting one country after another. He said how sad it is that a beautiful country like Iraq and poor people of Afghan were forced into terrorism. He asked Indian media not to be on the side of the Western media and to raise their voice against barbarism. On this occasion Mohammad Rafe Quasmi, Mohammad Mustaqueem Ehrari, Sarfraz and other respectable persons were present.

Five dead, 54 wounded in Egyptian sectarian clashes

May 8, 2011

CAIRO: Five people were killed and more than 54 were wounded in a sectarian clash in Egypt on Saturday over a Christian woman who had allegedly converted to Islam, health officials said.

The strife represents another challenge to Egypt’s military rulers who are trying to restore law and order after President Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down in a popular uprising in February.

Details of how the confrontation began were sketchy. But witnesses said some 500 conservative Islamists known as salafists gathered at the Saint Mina Church in the Cairo suburb of Imbaba demanding to take custody of a woman they said had converted to Islam.

A shouting match ensued between church guards and neighbors and the Islamists. The verbal clash soon developed into a full fledged confrontation where the two sides exchanged gun fire, firebombs and stones.

“I just left one young man dead inside the church,” one Christian witness told journalists at the scene.

Authorities deployed large numbers of soldiers and police, backed by armored vehicles, to the area. The army fired shots in the air and used tear gas to separate both sides, witnesses said.

The governor of Giza province told journalists at least one person died and 23 were wounded in the clashes.

But the director of the health department in Giza province, Abdel-Halim Al-Behairi put the death toll at 5 and 54 wounded. He told Egypt’s state news agency MENA that three of the wounded were in serious condition.

Interfaith relationships often cause tension in Egypt, where Christians make up about 10 percent of its 80 million people.

Christians complain about unfair treatment, including rules they say make it easier to build a mosque than a church.

Last year Egypt saw more than its usual share of sectarian strife, and a rights groups has said such clashes have been on the rise. Muslims and Christians had been brought together during the protests that ousted Mubarak.

May 7, 2011

BAGHDAD: Gunmen killed at least six people and wounded ten others on Saturday in an attack on a goldsmiths’ market in the Iraqi city of Baquba, the provincial military command center said.

The attackers robbed the shops before fleeing, the official said.

Baquba is the capital of Diyala, a troubled province where Al-Qaeda and other Sunni Muslim insurgents still battle Iraqi security forces.

WASHINGTON: The trove of material seized in the raid on Osama bin Laden's hideout demonstrates how important it was to track down the Al-Qaeda chief, CIA Director Leon Panetta said Saturday.

"The material found in the compound only further confirms how important it was to go after Bin Laden," Panetta said. "Since 9/11, this is what the American people expected of us. In this critical operation, we delivered."

US releases seized Osama bin Laden videos

08 ,MAY 2011

WASHINGTON: US officials on Saturday released extraordinary videos of Osama bin Laden seized in the daring raid that killed Al-Qaeda chief, saying the material shows he was a hands-on leader who took pains to shape his public image.

The tracking of bin Laden and the May 1 raid, in which more than 20 US Navy SEALs swooped on his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan and shot him dead, represented an intelligence coup on a historic scale, a senior US intelligence official said.

The Al-Qaeda leader “was far from a figurehead, he was an active player,” the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters at the Pentagon.

The seized material includes digital, audio and video files, printed items, computer equipment, recording devices and handwritten documents.

“As a result of the raid, we have acquired the single largest collection of senior terrorist materials ever,” the official said.

“This is the greatest intelligence success perhaps of a generation,” the official said.

Five videos were made public, including an extraordinary one in which the Al-Qaeda chief is seen holding a remote and sitting with a blanket over him, watching images of himself on television in a spare-looking room.

Foreign channels’ live coverage from Abbottabad barred

08, MAY 2011

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has barred all major foreign television channels from making live broadcasts from Abbottabad five days after US commandos killed Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden there, reflecting the government’s unease over the coverage of perceived failures of its agencies.

The Pemra issued a restraining order in a statement released by the government’s Press Information Department on Saturday evening, accusing nine channels, the BBC and CNN included, of violating section 30 of the Pemra Act.

The move, which is likely to come under criticism on grounds of curbing press freedom, comes amid continuing interest at home and abroad in the May 2 operation by US navy commandos that killed the world’s most wanted man in Abbottabad.

The statement added that Pemra had stopped “foreign satellite TV channels from illegal uplinking of signals and live covering (of) news from Abbottabad”. The agency named the channels as Fox News, NBC News, CNN, CNS, IBN, BBC, Al-Jazeera, Voice of America (VOA) and Sky News.

Syrian tanks storm flashpoint city: Activists

May 7, 2011,

DAMASCUS: Syrian tanks stormed the flashpoint city of Banias on Saturday, rights activists said, as President Bashar al-Assad ignored growing world outrage to press a violent crackdown on anti-regime protesters.

Heavy gunfire was heard in Banias's south, a seaside sector of the city where most of the protesters live, while navy boats patrolled offshore, the activists said, reached by telephone from Nicosia.

An Internet-based Syrian opposition group, meanwhile, proposed Saturday that embattled Assad offer to hold elections in six months in order to bring to an end the crisis that has engulfed his country for more than seven weeks.

The military assault on Banias, in northwestern Syria on the Mediterranean coast, came after security forces shot dead 26 protesters Friday during a huge "Day of Defiance" against the regime, according to a toll by rights groups.

Gaddafi troops hit Misrata fuel tanks

08, MAY 2011

TRIPOLI ? Libyan government forces bombed large fuel storage tanks in the contested western city of Misrata, destroying the tanks and sparking a huge fire, rebels said Saturday.

The bombardment came as artillery rounds fired by forces loyal to Libya's Muammar Gaddafi fell in Tunisia in an escalation of fighting near the border between Libyan soldiers and anti-Gaddafi rebels. Misrata is the last remaining city in the west under rebel control. The port city has been under siege for more than two months and has witnessed some of the war's fiercest fighting between loyalists and rebels.

Rebels gave varying accounts of the Misrata bombardment but said the overnight attack, which hit fuel used for export as well as domestic consumption, came as a blow to their ability to withstand the siege.

Obama's Pakistan trip now uncertain

08, MAY 2011

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's promised trip to Pakistan this year, once seen as a reward for a key ally in the fight against terrorism, is now a looming headache for the White House as it tries to determine whether the government in Islamabad was complicit in allowing Osama bin Laden to live for years within the country's borders.

Obama told Pakistani officials in the fall that he planned to travel there in 2011, in part to soothe concerns that the president was favoring Pakistan's neighbor and archrival, India, by visiting there first. White House spokesmen questioned this week by The Associated Press refused to say whether Obama still planned to go.

In the hours after bin Laden's killing by a U.S. special forces team in Pakistan, John Brennan, Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, left the topic open.

"I'm not going to address the president's schedule," he said. "I think there's a commitment that the president has made that he is intending to visit Pakistan. A lot depends on availability, scheduling."

Yemen youth protest leaders want Gulf plan withdrawn
