Amid DJ Music And Beating Drums, A Muslim Family’s
Home Is Bulldozed In Ujjain
Ashraf
Mansoori stands on the remains of his home in Ujjain. | Special arrangement.
-----
Zafar Aafaq
23-07-2023
On July 19, officials of the Municipal Corporation of
Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh pasted an eviction notice on the gate of Ashraf
Hussain Mansoori’s three-storey home.
The notice, dated July 18, declared that Mansoori’s
home was a “dangerous building”. Municipal laws state that in such cases,
occupants should be given a month’s time to comply with the notice or file
objections.
But within an hour, bulldozers arrived outside
Mansoori’s home, he said. Officials also brought along drummers and a vehicle
loaded with a DJ-style music system. A crowd watched on as earthmovers tore
down most parts of Mansoori’s home to the pounding of loud drums and shrill
music.
“I have lived in this house forever,” Mansoori told
Scroll over the phone. “It was built by my grandfather before I was born.” The
house had all its legal permissions in place and the family had documents to
prove this, he said.
Two days before the demolition, Mansoori’s two sons,
one of them a minor and the other 18-year-old Adnan Mansoori, and another
underage boy had been accused of spitting on a Hindu religious procession as it
passed by the house. Devotees of Baba Mahakal were carrying a palanquin through
parts of Ujjain to the Mahakal temple at Chatri Chowk.
As the procession passed through a street in a Muslim
locality, someone shot a clip of the three youngsters watching from the
terrace.
Soon after the procession was over, a video surfaced
online showing one of the boys drinking water from a plastic bottle. However,
the video was accompanied by the claim that they had allegedly spat at the
procession.
Hindutva supporters responded quickly, protesting
outside the KharaKua police station. A complaint was filed by a man named Sawan
Lot, along with his friends Yogesh Bagmar and Ajay Khatri, according to The Quint.
That evening, the three youngsters were detained by
the police. The police registered a case under four sections of the Indian
Penal Code including 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage
religious feelings), 295 (disturbing religious assembly), 153A (promoting
enmity between different groups) and 505 (statements conducting to public
mischief).
The next day, the three youngsters were presented
before a judge. Adnan Mansoori was sent to the Bhairavgarh Central Jail. His
brother was sent to a juvenile home, as was the other minor.
The notice pasted on Mansoori’s gate on the morning of
July 19 was addressed to his late mother, Shahjahan Bi. It asks the owner to
remove the structure else the house would be demolished by the municipal authorities.
In recent years, fans of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister
Shivraj Singh Chauhan have begun to refer to him by the adulatory nickname
“Bulldozer Mama” reflecting the enthusiasm of authorities in the state for
using heavy machinery to demolish the premises of some people accused of
committing crimes. Since Indian law has no provision to allow such demolitions,
the authorities usually claim that these properties were built without
requisite permissions.
Many of the properties demolished in this fashion in
Madhya Pradesh and in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh – whose chief minister,
Adityanath, is referred to as “Bulldozer Baba” – were owned by Muslims.
In the notice pasted on Mansoori’s gate, however, the
Hindi words “awaidhnirman” or “illegal construction” have been crossed out by
pen and replaced with “khatarnaakbhavan” or “dangerous building”. Mansoori
showed Scroll a copy of the notice.
Since officials could not establish that his house was
illegal, Mansoori said, they claimed that it was dilapidated and posed a safety
risk.
The notice says that the owner of the house had been
served a similar order a few days before asking him to demolish the house.
Since the order had not been complied with, the second notice had followed.
Speaking to journalists during the demolition, Akash
Bhuriya, Ujjain’s additional superintendent of police, said that the police had
informed the municipal corporation and revenue officials about the alleged
spitting incident, after which Mansoori’s home was demolished.
“The action of demolition of illegal encroachments is
being taken against those who a few days ago attempted to disturb the religious
harmony,” Bhuriya told journalists in an impromptu briefing that can be viewed
on the internet.
However, Sachin Sharma, Superintendent of Police
Ujjain, told Scroll that the alleged incidents related to the procession and
the demolition of Mansoori’s home were not connected.
“These things happen on a regular basis,” said Sharma.
“Constructions that are beyond the municipality regulations, beyond the bylaws
and procedures are removed.”
He claimed that on the same day, the municipality had
served notices to other people too and undertaken more demolitions. “But the
attention of the media went to just one place,” Sharma said. “Three to four
more encroachments were removed.”
Farhan Gauri, a local activist who is assisting
Mansoori’s family, said that the use of drums and loudspeakers was “rubbing
salt into the wounds” of the family.
He asked how an alleged act of spitting on a
procession could prompt such a disproportionate response that resulted in an
entire family being punished.
“If their house was dangerous, then why did the
municipality wait so long?” said Gauri. “I want to ask why the demolition was
done only after this incident at the procession.”
At a press conference on Thursday, Khaliqur Rahman,
the Shehar Qazi or leader of the local Muslim community, said that the
allegations that the boys had spat on the procession were baseless. “They file
these petty cases and ruin the lives of innocent boys,” he added.
He added that the administration had not followed due
process before demolishing the house. The officials acted hastily and under the
pressure of Hindutva groups, he said, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party
government in Madhya Pradesh was targeting Muslims.
Rahman demanded an investigation against municipal
officials for demolishing the house and also sought compensation for Mansoori’s
family.
Meanwhile, a group of lawyers on July 20 wrote a
letter to the Ujjain Bar Association demanding that no lawyer should represent
the three boys in court.
“Since Baba Mahakal and his ride are a matter of faith
for the people of Ujjain and the world, an attempt was made by antisocial
elements to provoke religious sentiments,” the letter said. “The said incident
has also hurt the sentiments of advocates, and hence no one from the bar should
appear for them.”

Saudi Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Condemns Burning Of

Recent public desecrations

23/July/2023
SANA'A July 23. 2023 (Saba)-The Ministry of Foreign
Affairs condemned the Danish authorities' granting a permit to an extremist to
burn a copy of the Holy Qur'an in front of the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen, in
an unacceptable crime of racist incitement.
In a statement, a copy of which was received by the
Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the Danish
government responsible for this crime, which is in no way linked to freedom of
opinion, expression and belief that Western countries repeat on a daily basis.
The statement clarified that this irresponsible act is
a provocative incitement to more than two billion Muslims in various continents
of the world.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Arab and
Islamic countries and countries that love peaceful coexistence to take concrete
and effective steps to express their rejection of such foolish behavior by
imposing an economic boycott on Swedish and Danish products and industries.

Hezbollah Leader Says Muslim Countries Must Cut
Diplomatic, Economic Relations with Sweden over Qur'an Desecration
Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah
------
2023-July-23
TEHRAN (FNA)- The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah
resistance movement called on Muslim countries to sever their relations with
Sweden in reaction to the desecration of the Holy Qur'an in the Scandinavian
country.
Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah's Saturday remarks came after
on Friday, he called on all Muslim countries to expel the Swedish ambassadors
from their capitals in reaction to a second instance of the desecration of
Muslims' holy book in Sweden, presstv reported.
Nasrallah said the positions that are being adopted by
Arab and Muslim countries on this sacrilegious act "must lead to severance
of [their] diplomatic and economic relations" with the Swedish government.
Adding to his Saturday comments, the Hezbollah leader
said the Muslim world should not be duped by the Swedish and Danish governments
sufficing to mere apologies over the sacrilegious acts.
Nasrallah was referring to two instances of the
desecration of the Holy Qur'an in Sweden and the repetition of the sacrilegious
act in Denmark, which prompted Iran to summon the Danish ambassador to Tehran
in vehement protest at the insulting act.
"We must not be deceived by the Swedish and
Danish [governments'] apologies, [because] they are not enough and these
governments must prevent such abusive behavior," the Hezbollah leader
said.
He also hailed the Iraqi government for reacting to
the insulting act by expelling the Swedish ambassador from Baghdad and
withdrawing its own envoy from Stockholm.
Nasrallah also warned the Swedish government against
allowing the repetition of such sacrilegious acts on its soil, saying, "If
the Swedish government remains on this path, it will be considered a country
fighting Islam and Muslims".
The Hezbollah leader urged the Swedish government to
pay due attention to the remarks made by Leader of the Islamic Revolution
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, especially to that part in which the Leader
described Stockholm as a "government that has taken battle array against
Islam" by authorizing desecration of Muslims' holy book.
Nasrallah also warned that if it is confirmed that the
Israeli spy agency, Mossad, is behind the desecration of the Qur'an, it would
mean that such sacrilegious acts would continue and would be followed by strong
popular and official reactions from the Muslim world.
Earlier in July, Iran's Intelligence Ministry said the
Iraqi national who burnt a copy of the Holy Qur'an in Stockholm was affiliated
with the Israeli Mossad spy agency and engaged in espionage activities against
resistance groups.
The ministry said in its statement that Salwan Momika
was born in Iraq in 1986 and was hired by Mossad in 2019, stressing that his
notoriety and criminal records in his home country were “accepted and welcomed
by Zionists” at the time.
After being recruited by the Israeli spy agency, the
Iraqi man “played a major role in spying on the resistance movement and
advancing the project of Iraq's disintegration”, the Intelligence Ministry
added.
The ministry underlined that the desecration of the
Holy Qur’an by Momika was part of an Israeli project to detract the world's
public attention away from the regime’s atrocities against Palestinians in the
occupied West Bank, especially in the city of Jenin.

positive interaction with the world and good relations in an atmosphere of

Nigerian Award-Winning Singer Speaks Amidst Backlash

Nigerian award-winning

By Rachel Okporu Fadoju
23 July 2023
Nigerian award-winning singer, David Adeleke,
popularly known as Davido, has broken his silence amidst backlash over the
controversial new music video many termed ‘disrespect’ to Islam.
The video, as seen by this publication, showed some
people dressed in white clothes praying the way the Muslims do before launching
into dancing as they recited some Quranic verses and prayed.
Similarly, Ahmed Bashir, ex-aide to Muhammadu Buhari,
also found the video offensive as he criticized Davido for promoting the
entertainment content.
According to Ahmad, the video is disrespectful to
Islam, and many Muslims will find it offensive.
However, the ‘OBO’ crooner, who seemed unbothered
about the outrage online, took to his Twitter page to further promote the
video.
In the series of tweets, Davido made reference to his
recent album, saying he was unavailable and he didn’t want to fight with
anyone.

Mamata wins at musical chairs; is IB being shorn of
Muslim cops?
Anita Katyal
Jul 23, 2023
There is an interesting observation by the protagonist
in Amor Towles’ novel, A Gentleman in Moscow, on seating arrangements for a
formal dinner or meeting. “Seating is everything,” he said and cited past
examples on how a wrong move had changed the course of history. Congress
leaders clearly understood the importance of seating as they vied with each
other to sit next to party leader Sonia Gandhi at the recent Opposition meet in
Bengaluru. Since she is not seen regularly at political events these days,
Sonia Gandhi’s participation in the Bengaluru summit created quite a stir. The
event witnessed a proverbial game of musical chairs as Congress leaders awaited
their turn to grab the chair next to the former party chief. At one point, two
party leaders did succeed in their mission. But before they could make
themselves comfortable, they were evicted by an upset Rahul Gandhi who asked
them to ensure the meeting went off without a hitch. He then requested West
Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to take the seat next to Sonia Gandhi.
The two chatted amiably as they are known to share warm relations. Joining in
the conversation, Rahul Gandhi enquired about Mamata Banerjee’s ligament injury
and told her about his experience as he, too, had suffered a similar injury
during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The Trinamul chief was also given a prominent
seat at the joint press conference after the meeting. For sure, seating is
critical.
And while on the subject of seating, here’s another
titbit from the Bengaluru summit. It was obvious during the two days that the
Congress leadership was going all out to keep Karnataka deputy chief minister
D.K. Shivakumar in good humour and seating played a key role in this. For
instance, at the media briefing held before the meeting, Congress leaders K.C.
Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh specially asked Shivakumar to sit with them while
they addressed the press. Before the meeting started, Mr Shivakumar was spotted
welcoming all Opposition leaders and posing for photographs with them. Congress
president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi as well other invitees,
including Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Bihar chief minister Nitish
Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav spent a lot of time chatting with
Shivakumar. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, who was the chief host, was
virtually invisible as he was kept busy with the arrangements for the meeting.

Egypt nixed Travis Scott's concert despite his
'respects Allah' plea
By Web Desk
July 23, 2023
On July 28, Travis Scott's concert was set to perform
at the Giza Pyramids, Egypt. In 15 minutes, the concert was sold-out. But the
authorities cancelled the show on his previous 'satanic practices' in the
concert, despite the rapper's plea that "he respects Allah and goes church
regularly."
Talking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the Egyptian Syndicate of
Musical Professions spox Mohamed Abdullah confirmed the permit fees was
returned to the organizers.
The allegations of the problematic activities of the
rapper stemmed from his 2021's Travis Scott Astroworld Festival where he
allegedly flaunted Satanism symbols, including inverted crosses, circles, and
the all-seeing eye, "reinforce the representation of symbols and shapes at
this concert," a research report in Daengku: Journal of Humanities and

Mall walking: Saudi Arabia’s latest fitness trend
DHAI AL-MUTAIRI
July 22, 2023
RIYADH: An increasingly familiar sight in Saudi
Arabia’s malls is people stretching their legs and strolling past shoppers.
Mall walking, or ‘mallercise,’ is a safe — and free —
option for people who want to be physically active and would rather not pay a
hefty fee to join a gym. It is especially attractive when the hot weather makes
outdoor pursuits too uncomfortable. Indeed, mall walking has become prevalent
among Saudi residents, a way to keep an eye out for sales while burning
calories.
Walking is widely held to be one of the most
beneficial forms of basic exercise, and step-counting is a great motivational
tactic for achieving fitness goals. So for many men and women, an hour of
walking at the mall is a two-for-one.

“Eye-opener”: How Ayatollah Khamenei wants us to deal
with anti-Islam events
By Mona Hojat
July 22, 2023
TEHRAN - Muslims around the world are horrified at the
revolting Islamophobic events taking place in Europe over the past few weeks.
This is not the first time the holy Quran has got desecrated but the blatant
support of Western governments for the provocative acts has led to further
outcry in the Islamic world.
At a time when Muslims are subject to being carried
away by nerve-wracking and overwhelming emotions, they should try not to take
on a position that will help the enemies of Islam reach their wicked goals.
To be able to see the situation for what it really is
and navigate through our emotions, we will take a look at the remarks that
Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Revolution, has made throughout the
years while addressing anti-Islam events.

Kabul denies Daesh fighters making inroads into
Afghanistan, warns Iran against raising ‘false alarms’
PARWIZ KAROKHAIL
July 22, 2023
KABUL: Afghanistan’s foreign ministry on Saturday
denied Iranian allegations about the transfer of Daesh fighters to the
landlocked country from Iraq, Syria and Libya, warning Tehran against raising
“false alarms” with regard to Afghanistan.
The statement came a day after the Iranian foreign
minister, Amir Hossein Abdollahian, said the shifting of Daesh leaders and
fighters of Daesh, or the so-called Islamic State (IS), had become one of the
main challenges of the interim Afghan government. He raised concerns that any
instability in Afghanistan would directly affect the border region between the
two countries.
Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a spokesman for the Afghan foreign
ministry, rejected the Iranian foreign minister’s allegation and said
Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities had meticulously fought against Daesh both
during and after the end of Afghanistan’s “occupation” by the United States-led
forces.

By Philip Andrew
23-07-2023
Demonstrations have taken place in the streets of
Botswana's capital, Gaborone, against legislation to make same-sex relations
legal.
Mostly religious groups marched across the city to
voice their opposition to a bill aiming to comply with a 2019 court ruling in
favour of LGBTQ rights.
Botswana's High Court in 2019 ruled in favour of
campaigners seeking to strike down jail sentences for same-sex relationships,
declaring the punishment to be unconstitutional.

Senior South African says US cluster bomb decision
will affect Africa
By Philip Andrew
23-07-2023
A senior figure in South Africa's national assembly
has condemned the decision by the United States to send cluster bombs to
Ukraine.
It follows confirmation by the White House that
controversial cluster munitions provided by the United States to Ukraine have
been deployed on the battlefield against Russian forces.
"I think the use of weapons, such as the United
States is prepared to use, irrespective of objections to those who have
oversight over them, is wrong. It's not appropriate," he said.

Coalition partners apprehend election delays
Syed Irfan Raza
July 23, 2023
ISLAMABAD / KARACHI: Two key allies in the ruling
coalition have apprehensions that the upcoming general elections may be
delayed, it emerged on Saturday.
The PPP is worried that disagreements over the digital
census and delimitation might delay polls, while JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur
Rehman isn’t convinced that polls will be held in time, even if the PDM-led
coalition hands over the reins of power to a caretaker set-up, as it is
supposed to.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, PPP leader
Faisal Karim Kundi said his party believed that timely elections were the only
solution to come out of current political and economic mess.
The issue of the census has become contentious after
federal ministers categorically said elections — slated to be held in either
October or November—.won’t take place based on the digital census held earlier

Openg today expressed disappointment with the Education Ministry for the delay
in releasing funds to replace dilapidated school blocks with new ones in the
state.
“The ministry only talks. That is why I am quite hot
at them,” he said during his speech at the closing of a youth camp for students

He said the state government will build new blocks and
a multipurpose hall for SMK Gedong, estimated to cost the state government RM15

Greece facing longest heatwave on record while record
highs hit US
Jul 22, 2023
ATHENS: Greece was Saturday facing its hottest July
weekend in 50 years, with temperatures forecast to soar above 40 Celsius (104
Fahrenheit), while a record-breaking heatwave stretching across the southern
United States was expected to expand in the coming days.
Tens of millions of people in the northern hemisphere
have been suffering through intense heat this summer as the world appears
headed for its hottest July on record.
As temperature records tumble, experts have pointed
the finger at climate change driven by the burning of fossil fuels, saying
global warming is playing a key role in destructive weather.
Already 11 days into its heatwave, Greece's national
weather institute warned reprieve was still days away, setting this up to be
the longest hot spell the country has ever seen.

Record heat swamps US emergency rooms
Jul 23, 2023
Heat-related illnesses have spiked as the US bakes in
a record-hot summer, forcing some hospitals to call in more staff to treat a
surge in patients.
The proportion of emergency-room visits linked to heat
skyrocketed in Texas and surrounding states starting in June, according to
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, with some weeks surpassing
levels seen last year. Rates soared in other parts of the country, including
the Southwest, in late June and July.
Doctors in Arizona and Texas said it’s the worst
summer yet, with a higher number of patients coming in and some needing
treatment for severe conditions like heat stroke, when high body temperatures
can damage vital organs and sometimes lead todeath. Temperatures have set
monthly and all-time records around the country in the past month, spiking well
above 38°C in many places. There’s little chance of relief soon: Most of the US
has a high chance of warmer-than-normal temperatures through August 3,
according to the Climate Prediction Center.
